Frequently Asked Questions about Creative Writing

Creative Writing courses give students a chance to explore their creative potential, to think imaginatively about language, and to practice the many elements of the craft involved in making fiction and poetry. Most CW classes are limited to fifteen students, allowing for individual instruction and small group workshops in class. English majors and English Honours students may find they learn a new perspective on literature when they choose a CW course. That said, all people, whether beginning, emerging, or accomplished writers, can improve their ability to think and write creatively with practice.

Yes. As long as students meet the prerequisite and portfolio requirements, they may apply for any CW course. We encourage students from all faculties to consider CW as an elective. Writers from outside the University of Winnipeg are also encouraged to apply; occasionally, prerequisites may be waived for people with strong portfolios.

The 4-Year BA in Creative Writing is designed to provide a comprehensive, coherent program of study that encompasses both the reading and the writing of literature. It gives students the opportunity to concentrate on their fiction, creative non-fiction, or poetry, in a serious, sustained way; to develop the skills and discipline needed to carry a project through to completion; and to receive regular feedback, both from the instructors and from other writers in the program. The Creative Writing program also gives students the opportunity to prepare for further study in the field (for example, to put together a portfolio for application to a Creative MA program). It's also good preparation for careers in writing, editing, publishing, and other areas in the literary arts. Students who follow the program will earn a 4-Year BA in English with a specialization in Creative Writing marked on their transcript. Several graduates of our program are currently pursuing graduate programs in English or Creative Writing. The careers of our graduates include include magazine ediror; journal publisher; book publisher’s marketing assistant; radio host; stage performer; theatre manager; art curator; multi-media artist; bookstore event staff; technical writer; journalist; and cultural centre director. Many are published poets, novelists, and award-winning authors in a variety of genres.

Yes! The University of Winnipeg publishes juice, a journal of creative writing by and for UW students. Creative Writing students are encouraged to participate in juice by attending the launch (usually held in October), reading the journal, and of course by submitting their poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, or drama for publication. Each year there will also be opportunities to apply to work on the juice editorial team or to volunteer in assisting the team with publicity, event organization, proof-reading, and other tasks. Copies of juice are sold on campus at the Info Booth and the Beyond Words bookstore.

Much of the time, yes. The University of Winnipeg hosts the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence program, which brings a professional writer into the university each year for a period of time. The writer has an office on campus and is available for consultation to students and writers in the community. The Writer-in-Residence will read and discuss your manuscripts, provide advice about the writing profession, and will usually give a public reading and lecture during the course of his or her tenure. See the Writer-in-Residence link on the sidebar of the English department website, for more information.

There is no special application process for this program. Interested students should consult the Calendar and then a Creative Writing instructor for information and advice, to make sure they are meeting the degree requirements. All University of Winnipeg students declare a degree program when they are admitted. All students are later asked to declare a major before registering for their 36th credit hour of course work (before their sixth course). At that time you can declare your major (English) and the stream (Creative Writing). If you follow the program guidelines, you will earn a BA in English with a specialization in Creative Writing.

For some courses (ENGL 2002/3: The Creative Process and ENGL 2101/3: Introduction to Creative Writing) there is no special application process. Any students who have taken the prerequisite (6 credit hours of first-year English, including 1001 or 1000) may register for those courses if there is room in them. Other Creative Writing courses require the instructor's permission. Students requesting permission should submit a portfolio and a portfolio checklist to the instructor. If you don’t know who the instructor is, consult the English department office. See "About Portfolios" on this website, for submission guidelines. To ensure that instructors can read the portfolios before registration begins, we suggest submitting them in May. But instructors will consider portfolios at any time before the course begins, if space is available, or becomes available.

The following courses fulfill the requirement:

  • 3119.3 Canadian Children’s Literatures and Cultures
  • 3708.3/6 Canadian Literature and Culture
  • 3709.3/6 Topics in Canadian Literature and Culture
  • 3717.3/6 Indigenous Literatures and Cultures
  • 3719.3 Literature of Manitoba
  • 3723.3/6 Topics in Indigenous Texts and Cultures
  • 4710.3/6 Canadian Literature and Culture
  • 4717.3/6 Indigenous Literatures and Cultures

Note: Credit in the following former courses (no longer offered) may also be used to fulfill the requirement: 3710, 3713, 3714, 3716, 3731.

Also, from time to time certain "Topics" courses in the English department may focus on Canadian and/or Indigenous topics that may make them eligible to fulfill this requirement. Consult an English department advisor to be sure.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree offered through the Department of Business and Administration is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in business, in the private, public or non-profit sectors. We nurture socially conscience business leaders and entrepreneurs that are capable of adapting to the ever-changing needs of the modern business world.

The Business and Administration program develops critical thinking, analytic and decision-making abilities, oral and written communication skills, and the self-confidence to effectively apply these skills. Some courses in the program are taught using the case method, a simulation of real business situations from the perspective of the actual decision-maker. Computer-based simulations, experiential exercises, guest speakers, and field trips are also used to connect course material to the business world.  A new co-op work study program allows students to add career real work experience to their UW Degree.

Bachelor of Business Administration (4 years):-

The four-year BBA prepares students for managerial work and also for further study in business administration such as an MBA or other graduate degree program.  In the four-year program, you can (and many students do) elect to take a 'general stream' degree, which allows maximum flexibility for course selection. Other students elect to narrow their studies into their choice of five Areas of Concentration:

  • International Business
  • Co-operative Enterprises
  • Human Resource Management & Organisational Behaviour

It is not unusual for students to pursue two Concentrations simultaneously (e.g., Marketing and International Business) in our four-year program.

Creative writing and internationality

As the new assistant professor for the University of Winnipeg’s (U of W) English department, Dr. Sandy Pool has ideas for incorporating her international experience into the creative writing stream.

“I have been working and travelling internationally for the past five years,” Pool says.

Pool began by working in the United States, mainly in Buffalo and Florida, before moving to the United Kingdom. There, she taught in the most prestigious creative writing program in Britain at the University of East Anglia.

In addition to her teaching experience, Pool wrote two books of poetry  Undark: An Oratorio and Exploding Into Night , which was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Awards in 2010.

Pool hopes that, by 2022, her newest written project will be released. It’s a series of personal essays written about her mother.

“They’re focused on the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters, and also queerness,” she says.

“My mother was sick for my entire life, so it’s really about thinking about illness and sickness and how that might affect your relationship with your mother.”

Alongside her excitement with her creative projects, Pool is enthusiastic about what she might bring to the U of W’s creative writing program.

Specifically, Pool hopes to incorporate internationality into the program. Her goal is to get more Canadian writers operating in creative spaces that extend beyond our local sector.

“I think my international experience allows me to link international writers and Canadian writers together, so I’m super excited about that,” she says. “It would be really fun to see what comes out of those new collaborations.”

What is something you’ve learned from your students? “To stay current, and I think my students keep me current.”

What was your worst grade in university? “Oh! Uh, F.”

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? “I’m so anxious about the climate emergency, I really am, especially with the forest fires. I feel like my superpower would be ... being able to improve the environment dramatically.”

What do you think creative writing has the ability to do to effect change?

“I’m one of those writers and professors who deeply, deeply believes that creative writing can save your life. It has certainly saved mine thousands of times over.”

  • Art & Design
  • Computer Science
  • Engineering
  • Environmental Science
  • Liberal Arts & Social Sciences
  • Mathematics

Below is a list of best universities in Canada ranked based on their research performance in Creative Writing. A graph of 246K citations received by 19.8K academic papers made by 48 universities in Canada was used to calculate publications' ratings, which then were adjusted for release dates and added to final scores.

We don't distinguish between undergraduate and graduate programs nor do we adjust for current majors offered. You can find information about granted degrees on a university page but always double-check with the university website.

Please note that our approach to subject rankings is based on scientific outputs and heavily biased on art-related topics towards institutions with computer science research profiles.

There is no doubt that in today’s competitive business environment, strong writing skills are essential to an individual’s career success. Ultimately, the ability to communicate clearly and concisely reflects well - not only on the writer - but on the organization they represent. This experiential course is designed to build and enhance your ability to write effectively and proficiently. By learning and working with techniques that lead to powerful writing, you will be well positioned to contribute to the success of your organization and your career.

This course combines interactive, hands-on classroom sessions with online content. You will learn key strategies for writing effective business correspondence and for recognizing the most appropriate delivery channel, whether it be email, internal memo, letter or report. Emphasis will be placed on plain language, powerful sentence and paragraph structure and the correct use of grammar and important writing mechanics. All of these concepts will be applied to writing effective business documents with an emphasis on the most current business style.

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Use the three phases of The Writing Process (planning, writing and revising) when developing written documents;
  • Identify and address the needs of specific audiences;
  • Write clear and concise messages using plain language, correct grammar and punctuation;
  • Format documents to enhance readability and present a professional message;
  • Recognize how business communication in North America compares and contrasts with business communication in other parts of the world.

What we’re about

Calling all writers! All levels of experience welcome. All I'm looking for is people who share a passion for creative writing. Come together and talk about how you get your ideas, your creative process, maybe bring a sample of what you are working on so we can encourage and inspire our creative juices. Also a place for creatives in general.

As a writer and musician, I'm always eager to meet others who share the same passions. The plan would be to meet at bars, coffee shops, and other places, and have a round table discussion to share ideas. Possibly themes/topics of the week, or just going with the flow and whatever people want to bring to the table! :) This group is LGBTQ+ positive, and welcome to all.

Author Spotlight – Tiffany Prochera

 Tiffany Prochera Headshot

Where Did Your Writing Journey Begin?

Gosh, I have been writing as long as I can remember – poems, songs, stories. There was one Christmas as a child where I regaled family and friends with an illustrated story about how Santa Claus and the elves would be affected by the then-impending Free Trade Agreement.

What Do You Like To Do When You’re Not Writing?

Music is my soul, so I’m often practicing, composing, or recording. I also have fun hosting a weekly radio show, and I have developed a love of the early morning walk in nature.

Are There Any Rituals You Must Perform Before You Can Start Writing?

Not really. I suppose I might have a cup of coffee with me but even that’s not a rule. I just sit and do, whether it’s on the couch, on the patio, or in a coffee shop!

What Has Influenced You Most As A Writer?

I think the desire to inspire and teach is the biggest driver for me. I’m not really concerned with self-expressions or whether people understand me as a individual, but if I can help people understand the world or themselves in some way (hopefully while making them laugh in the process), I’m a happy camper! I can’t say I have any role models, per se, but, come on. Who wouldn’t want to write the next Harry Potter series? 🙂

Do You Have Any Advice For Other Writers?

Just spend time writing. Don’t worry about what actually comes out of you or judge it as good or bad. You can sort things out later on. Try not to censor yourself and just write!

At the University of Wyoming, we consider prose a full-time commitment. In fact, we are one of the few universities you will find anywhere that devotes its fully funded MFA program entirely to prose. We teach a wide range of courses in fiction, nonfiction, and hybrid forms. We offer award-winning faculty who write novels and story collections, public dialogues and philosophical meditations. We prepare our graduates to release books with prominent commercial and small-press publishers, and to bring their prose passions to writing for scientific communities, for public radio, for political campaigns. We recognize that prose writers need, most of all, time to hone their purpose and cultivate their craft. Accordingly, we provide each student with free tuition, career-enhancing (but never schedule-filling) teaching opportunities, and a generous living stipend. Our flexible degree requirements allow students to tailor their pursuits to their personal interests and career goals, and encourage many students to pursue simultaneous joint degrees in a variety of fields: from American Indian Studies, to English Literature, to Gender and Women's studies, to Environmental and Natural Resources, to Geology.

Our incomparable location beside the Medicine Bow National Forest and the Snowy Mountains allows ample space for focused work, and endless potential to expand one's artistic range through exploration of the stunning wilderness, through structured engagements with nearby writing programs and residency programs, and through informal excursions to Denver. Our students take advantage of summer stipends and numerous travel scholarships to position themselves all around the world, on a wide array of research projects. Our ongoing collaborations with prominent literary agents, with Essay Press, and with the renowned Wyoming Public Radio station provide prose writers with constructive models, with useful contacts, and with practical know-how when it comes to taking your prose public.
