How To Make a Company Profile Presentation with Examples and Templates

Imagine a presenter who can resonate with their target audience so effectively that they inspire the required trust and confidence to get new relationships started. That’s the primary goal of a successful company profile presentation.

As Nancy Duarte has said in her book Resonate , “Presenting ideas can either evoke puzzled stares or frenzied enthusiasm, which is determined by how well the message is delivered and how well it resonates with the audience.” Precisely because we know how vital this is to any business, we’re revising how to write a productive company profile in this article.

We’ve included company profile examples in this article to learn from others on how to best present your company. In this article, we’re strictly referring to company profile presentations.

What is a company profile?

As we’ve described before in our company profile templates category, a company profile is a resource organizations can use for creating presentations that describe the essential aspects of a company.

Company profile uses

A company profile is meant to assist in presenting a company to an audience. With that understanding, it can help with topics ranging from sales to internal company presentations, for example:

Introducing the company to its new employees

If we understand this resource as a polished portfolio or dossier, it’s easier to conceive how it can back up almost any pitch for diverse collaborations. The tool is suitable for showing a company’s philosophy, intentions, and plans to an audience.

Acquiring new investors

Promote your brand with it, or use the resource to persuade investors during fundraising for your company. You can also rely on it to present your company to prospects by crafting a professional company presentation.

Marketing presentations

Another aspect to consider is that company profiles are great for media presentations, back up any sponsorship opportunities, and get new collaborators to pitch in with our global company vision and plans.

How to create a company profile presentation: step-by-step instructions

Putting a company profile presentation together helps to focus on each slide at a time. Focus on the meaningful content of your company profile and use slides to complement your message.

Here is a run-down of each slide, one by one, to help put your company profile together. Alternatively, you can create your company profile presentation deck using SlideModel’s AI Presentation Maker tool and prepare your presentation for final PowerPoint edits.

Step 1 – Company Profile Cover Page

Your first slide can include your company logo , a title that typically reads “Company Profile”, and a sub-title. A quick one-liner description can be entered here or a meaningful short text with a motto or phrase.

Tips for presenting a company profile presentation

Step 2 – Mission & Vision

In general, you’re seeking to include the vision and mission slides in these first part of a company presentation. The classic piece of advice here is to state a company’s mission to give out what you’re looking to achieve. If you have doubts on what to include in a mission and vision slide, learn here how to prepare a successful vision statement .

Very much tied to the above, start by seeking a compelling introductory section for a company presentation.

Defining a Company's Vision and Mission in Company Profile presentation

Step 3 – What we do

Next, introduce your services or products in a medium-sized slide text. Nancy Duarte again guides us with valuable wisdom on this aspect as she recalls how “communicating only the detailed specifications or functional overviews of a product isn’t enough.” Look for an emotional rapport in your product introduction as much as possible. Ideally, you’ll address consumers’ or your audience’s pain points in a way that compels them to hear more.

On this last note about your audience, go deeply into their ways of thought, desires, interests, and needs to determine the problems and challenges they’re facing. Clearly defining what your proposed solution of value will be throughout your company pitch is a great way to present your company profile.

Far from overdoing it, focus on your main business areas to present your top three to six. Use images or icons for visual support. Include a supporting text on a service description, and the benefits of these for your target audience.

Step 4 – About the Company

And enter your company description in the next slide. This is usually presented with the header “About Us.” If your growth is at the point where it makes an impact once the story is told, include it. The same applies to any awards or key certifications you may have in your name. If you’ve made it to the news or media in great light, or if there’s any vital history that can be an impressive point for your company’s reputation, it may be worth adding those here.

An About Page for a Company Profile presentation

If you don’t want to start from scratch, you can use the About Us slide templates for PowerPoint.

In a nutshell, use all of your relevant bragging rights as you see fit. Stress any significant milestones your company could have achieved by the time you present. And narrow down your niche and any location-specific expertise you may have working to your advantage.

Step 5 – Present the Team

Follow with your team slide through a Meet the Team slide design. Show a few images of your leading talent. As usual with a team slide, consider the most common recommendations on who to highlight and what to include. You’re looking for the most reputable milestones of your team members’ careers as a highlight of their background to make a shining difference. If a particular person or group makes a stellar difference by being an experienced part of your team, include the following slide with just those party’s credentials and best references.

Showcasing the team in Company Profile presentation

Step 6 – Company major milestones

Then move to portray the company’s significant milestones in a timeline visually . The idea is to make your roadmap visually clear in your corporate presentation or company profiles. For that, title each part of the process, give it a brief description, and extend timeline indications onto a separate slide, if you prefer.

Timeline illustration of a company's milestones

Step 7 – Relevant Data

If you need to add PowerPoint chart templates , the next few slides would be a proper section to include these into the corporate presentations. Give descriptions of the data you’re presenting. Include a mix between pie charts, line and bar graphs, and other formats as you move along.

Company Profile Presentation Data Charts Slide

Our Company Profile PowerPoint template , for example, includes a world map that allows users to pinpoint company locations around the globe. The idea is to make the company’s global reach a lot more visible, which will help enhance your company overview slides.

All of the above coincides with a total of 15 slides we put together as part of this company PowerPoint-friendly material. Edit its background, move data around, and customize it as you see fit.

From here on, we suggest adding positive reviews via Client Testimonials or feedback left on review sites. For this purpose, you can reuse one of our editable client testimonial slides for PowerPoint & Google Slides. You can even add a client portfolio if you already have a great, solid base. Any good words about you from relevant parties will reinforce your credibility as the final touch and your conclusion slide.

Why use company profile templates?

Using PowerPoint presentation templates for company profiles is the first step toward a professional job. The primary justification for this choice is how much easier it is to edit, add, remove, or re-write a slide compared to other formats. Depending on how often you’ll need to customize this resource to pitch an audience, making quick changes can be easy and convenient.

Also, consider how quickly a company is going to face alterations in terms of products, finances, milestones, and diverse goals. Adding or removing a slide is very easy!

While we’re touching upon edits, keep your texts short and relevant descriptions. Avoid long blocks of content or jam-packed illustrations, even using graphs, tables, or others. As with any slide for any purpose, keep your presentation as lean as possible.

Alternatively, you can access our free company profile template to create an excellent company presentation.

Recommendations on company profiles

Speaking of purpose, define what the company profile is set out to achieve. An investment plan or trade portfolio can be a part of why a company profile is needed. Align objectives in this sense with the overall content.

If it isn’t evident, add the company logo to the company profile presentation. If you’re using pictures, make sure they’re of the highest quality, as this speaks professionalism. Some logo maker tools offer preset presentation sizes which makes the process easier.

As for contact details, seek to include email, phone, corporate address, and even a website mention. Adding these details is a way to let potential clients quickly learn more about your company. Social media accounts are also a must in terms of outreach and potential customers checking the company’s trajectory. To make it convenient and for a streamlined access to your contact information, add a digital business card with relevant contact details including website link and social media handles.

Company profiles might not be the best place to include financial reports or any corporate problems you’re dealing. On the contrary, they’re intended to draw people to your business and make them fall in love with a brand, its mission, and its vision.

That’s why it’s so important to seek to appeal to your audience’s emotions. How you can call upon an emotional connection with what you’re presenting is a great guiding principle as you build your next company profile presentation material, script, setting, and performance. Every aspect counts! Control what happens rather than leaving it to chance.

Examples of successful company profiles

Study cases for eco-friendly companies.

From a two-page company profile for a food waste management solution company to an 88-page document of the exact nature of one of Australia’s Equity Trustee companies, we’re detailing various company profile examples for a clearer idea of what these can include.

MAEKO made a clear statement in just a couple of slides, clearly defining its mission & vision, its niche, the offered solution for a world-class problem, and displaying its products’ end purpose.

The annual report from Equity Holdings Ltd. instead presents data in a consolidated way that both shareholders and potential business partners can quickly appreciate. Though lengthy, the main goal behind this approach is to provide complete insights into each aspect of the trust’s management, profits & losses.

We hope this has helped, and, of course, let us know if you’d like to see more or different. We’re here to help you excel every step of the way. Also, check out our step-by-step guide on how to make a PowerPoint Presentation .

10 Slides you should have in your company profile

Featured image for “10 Slides you should have in your company profile”

Creating a business presentation from scratch is never an easy task – you always have to consider and start from the type of presentation you’d need, the goals you want to achieve through it, your audience’s profile, needs and expectations, and the context of the presentation (how and where it’s going to be delivered and how much time will you have).

But when you have a guideline of how to figure out these elements and what you should include in your business presentation, then it all starts to make sense. That’s why we decided to put together several guides and how-tos on the most common business presentations out there. We started our series with the slides you should have in your pitch deck , followed by what to add in your sales deck and now in this article, we want to cover another very common type of presentation: the company profile.

We started this series with the structure for a pitch deck, followed by a sales presentation and now a company profile.

What is a company profile and when & where to use it?

Company profiles are presentations made to be used in introduction emails, to introduce your company before getting to specifics. You won’t need to actually present it, so make it explicit and easy to understand.

Compared to a live presentation, where your focus is on the audience, in a company profile it is ok to talk about you. The reader’s purpose is to get to know you.

A company profile is essential, from a startup to any major company

It is what most of your future partners and clients will see for the first time. What impression do you want to make?

It happens for a lot of companies to get so involved in making the company profile that they forget for who is actually made. Putting in all the information about you will make it boring for the reader and at the same time won’t leave any mystery about you.

As the Business Dictionary would define it:

A company profile is a concise description which, among other items of information, includes  firm’s history, number and quality of its human, financial, and physical resources, organizational and management structure, past, current and anticipated performance, and its reputation, and the standing of its goods or services.

But let’s not get wrapped around a definition and see how we can make a unique profile. Even if it’s your company profile, we recommend you to focus on how your company helps your customers.

It can also take many forms, some companies have it in a word document, others in a brochure, or as a presentation. We will talk about the 10 elements any company profile should have:

1. Mission statement/vision

This is the moment where you tell customers what drives you to do what you do. Continue with your mission and what are the values the brand stands for. Without knowing all the details about your products, they judge you by your values and your vision.

What does your company aspire to achieve?

You probably know the mission’s company, as it is part of your brand identity. With it, or with some additional information, also cover here details as who are your primary customers and where are your operations active.

2. Brief history of the company

A very simple way to tell your history is with a timeline slide. This way you can put all the steps that got you to the present in a visual way that is easy to understand. For the important one you can always add a short paragraph.

Keep in mind that you should include both ups and downs from your company. Show your readers that you have been through difficult moments, but you overcame them.

company background presentation

3. Overview of the solution

Spark some curiosity. Before getting into more details about each product/service you have, do an overview of the solution you are offering. Talk about what problem your solution tackles and how it does that.

You can also walk the reader through the process of creating this solution, what were your drivers and aspirations. This slide is meant to paint the big picture of your work.

company background presentation

4. Development & Growth

Hit me some numbers. Use real facts and data to show the difference between where you started, where you are now and where the company is going. Based on the internal data make a connection with external factors. They will be of much more interest for the reader, and at the same time will be explained by your work.

Tell stories of how much effort all the company did to grow. It’s up to you if you want to share struggles your company faced or specific actions of improving.

company background presentation

5. Detailed Products & Services

If your company has only a few products/services you can present them individually. Each product/service needs to be described from a technical point of view ( specific characteristics ) and from a customer point of view ( how can it be used/ for what it is used ).

In case there are too many products/services and it will take a lot of space to write about all, put them in categories. Under each category make a list of the products that it includes and add a general description.

It would be very helpful for your potential client and also for you if you add pricing and offers for the products/services. This will save time and you will continue discussion with those who are interested even after seeing the pricing.

company background presentation

6. Industry recognition/position

Let your reader know what your position is in the market. Include details about market size, your contribution to the market and what is the course of the industry. Don’t forget to differentiate yourself from other players in the market.

Even better, if you have received any recognitions or awards don’t be shy to mention them. Your readers will trust your company more if they see you have been acknowledged by specialized institutions.

company background presentation

7. Client portfolio & Testimonials

Show your potential partner/customer with whom you have already worked. Having testimonials form the biggest clients will bring value to your brand. Try to get a quote from a well known person in that organization or from an authoritative one.

Real feedback will strengthen your image without being too promotional. And is more credible as it comes from an external source.

company background presentation

8. Case studies

A very good way to showcase your work is with a case study. This means that you take a client that you worked with and start explaining how you worked together, what were the challenges, how you handled them, what was your approach and what were the results.

This is the process from the first talk until the end of the collaboration. Focus on the relevant aspects that showcase your solution and your communication during the collaboration. It is also helpful to have feedback from the client here.

company background presentation

9. Team & Departments

Who are the people behind the company?

In a startup it may be easier to present every member of the team, their background and area of expertise and it is also more important. A strong team sends a clear message, that you are ready for business.

For a bigger company having only the ones in leadership won’t be as meaningful. They must appear in the company profile together with the departments of the company. You want to transmit the image of a united company where every employee has its contribution.

company background presentation

10. Call to Action & Contact

A must have in your company profile is a simple push toward the next step. If the reader doesn’t know exactly what to do when they finish going through the document give them a few ideas, like:

“For more information contact us”, “Let’s schedule a call to talk more”.

In the end put the contact info where you can be found, address, email, telephone number. You can also have more contact persons for different situations. This will make it easier for the reader and will shorten the contacting process.

company background presentation

Company profiles can get very formal and have a lot of pages, the difference is that you can make it more interactive. Use creativity and put yourself in the customer shoes to see what they would be interested to see. May it be in a word document form or a presentation format do the best to personalize it and add your colors to it (metaphorically and literally).

Company Profile-How to Write a Company Background

Almost all Malaysian companies, incorporated or not, have at least a company profile.

A company profile introduces your business and creates a positive impression on prospective buyers or stakeholders. It often includes information on its ownership and management, mission statement, future goals, products and services, and other relevant details.

However, this article will focus on the company background, one of the most prominent elements in a company profile.

What is a Company Background?

A company background is a powerful tool to help build an inspiring narrative around your business.

Additionally, it gives readers a glimpse into the enterprise’s history and the people involved in establishing it. Understanding the company’s history helps consumers feel more confident in the brand and fosters loyalty.

Although it’s one of the shortest parts of a company profile, how you tell this story will positively impact your brand’s public image and engagement!

Importance of Company Background

Company background is a valuable asset that provides several benefits to a business, including:

  • Adding Authenticity to the Company’s Message

Consumers often view businesses as impersonal entities solely focused on sales and profit.

However, behind every enterprise, there is a story detailing how it was established from scratch to its present stature. When customers research a company’s background, they can get an insider’s look at how it was founded and developed.

Therefore, it provides a greater sense of connection with the goals and people behind the company, augmenting the brand’s authenticity.

  • Develop a Company Culture

From its roots to the relationships it builds, a company culture is a powerful tool in conveying an organisation’s essence. It reflects the core values and virtues upon which it was founded.

Certainly, fostering a positive company culture means preserving history while inspiring growth.

Company culture can be particularly influential when engaging with other businesses by demonstrating one’s principles and practices through their actions.

  • Build Trust with Customers

For any business to thrive, trust is an essential element between the company and its customers. Branding and marketing are fundamental tools for building confidence.

Your company’s background offers insights into its journey in the industry.

This reputable history, in turn, can provide credibility among potential customers, building trust and familiarity with your brand.

The company background is an integral part of your company’s profile.

Hence, it should be concise, informative, and interesting enough to keep your readers’ attention. Here is a brief list of a company background’s elements:

  • Company’s Purpose

The reason behind the start of your company is a crucial part of establishing a mission statement and values. Besides, it helps establish an initial perception among audiences about your business.

  • Overview of Founders

Providing a profile of the founders can give your company a human face. Moreover, you can include the timeline of the foundation of your company in the overview.

  • Founding Values and Vision

Establishing founding values for your company helps you define what makes your company unique and distinctive. Besides, it offers insight into your company culture, which will help improve your employer branding .

  • Key Events or Milestones

Include key events and milestones of your company in the company background.

As such, you can demonstrate how those events and milestones have affected the current establishment of the company. Moreover, they can be the testaments to your company’s legitimacy.

  • Contributions and Achievements

Remember to include your accolades, media coverage, and proofs of community engagements to your company background. This is due to the positive image and reputation you can derive from all these achievements and contributions.

Gather critical details and ideas so you can easily craft an engaging, comprehensive company background. Having the initial groundwork done allows for a streamlined creative process!

Tips on Writing a Company Background

Now that we have reviewed the basics, here are some tips we gathered to write a compelling company background.

  • Identify Themes

Uncovering a core theme is the foundation of creating a convincing company background.

Therefore, you should review your draft and identify patterns or commonalities to help define your business’ image . For instance, if perseverance stands out as an essential thread running throughout, ensure this idea comes across clearly in all communication about your firm.

Google’s commitment to ‘innovation’, for example, has been integral in establishing itself as one of the most significant search engines worldwide.

  • Determining a Tone

Time to set the tone for your company background?

You must consider how this information will be used and ensure it resonates with your target audience . Your chosen voice should align with that of the brand.

Brands like Julie’s Biscuits, for example, opt for a friendly, conversational style due to their playful nature.

  • Design a Compelling Company Background

These days, visual appeal is paramount to communicating your narrative effectively.

Hence, incorporate imagery and videos – or even a graphic timeline of events – for an engaging read to captivate your audience! Your timeline can do a better job of conveying your company’s key events and milestones than mere words.

25+ Business Background Images, Templates and Design Tips

There’s a time and place for a blank white background in your business communications. But if you’re trying to create an eye-catching presentation or even just a fun background for your Zoom meetings, at some point, you’ll need a supply of business background images.

If today’s that day, you’ve come to the right place!

Keep reading for a roundup of business background images you can quickly and easily apply to a whole host of content — from business cards to LinkedIn backgrounds, PowerPoints and more.

Click to jump ahead:

Business card background images, business linkedin background images, zoom business background images, powerpoint business background images, business presentation background images, professional business background images, business photo background images, design tips for business backgrounds.

Business cards might be small, but their impact can be major. A cool business card background can help you stand out in the minds of new connections.

Since most business cards contain very little content, the image can really be the star of the show, like in the following examples:

Real estate business background image

Real estate business background image

This image would be ideal for a business card for professionals in real estate, retail, architecture or construction. Be sure to think about the content you’ll place on the card.

In the case of the business card below, the designer chose to place the smallest type that appears on the image on a shaded box, which helps it pop against the darker parts of the photo.

Just so you know, some of our templates are free to use and some require a small monthly fee.  Sign up  is always free, as is access to Venngage’s online drag-and-drop editor.

Corporate business background image

Corporate business background image

Consider this business card background image if you’re working in a corporate environment (or want to be). If your firm is in the finance, real estate or legal industries, this image would be especially appropriate.

Create drama by cutting off part of the image, as this business card does, or use the full image, depending on your content.

Illustrated business background

Illustrated business background image

An illustrated business card background image like this one can play many roles. Basically, any type of urban professional could use this background and make it their own.

In the business card example below, it works beautifully for a real estate agent. But again, an illustration like this is very versatile and hints at a creative personality!

Photography business background

Photography business background image

Make a statement with a moody photograph. This type of business background would work for anyone in the environmental space or creatives, like photographers and artists.

Try turning the traditional business card on its head by creating one that’s vertical instead of horizontal, as the card below. This is a particularly good idea for people, like photographers, who need to emphasize that they have a unique perspective.

Return to Table of Contents

Adding a background image to your personal or company LinkedIn page gives you another way to showcase your personality and brand to your network.

As with other platforms, LinkedIn offers image recommendations , namely that banner background images should be 1,584 by 396 pixels. That means you need an image that’ll look good at a highly horizontal crop. You should also take into account what your profile picture looks like and how it will lay over the top of the background image.

Minimal LinkedIn banner

Minimal LinkedIn business background

If you want to strike a serene vibe and showcase your minimalist sensibilities, use this LinkedIn business background image as your banner on the platform.

The designer below used the image, along with his name in red, to make it stick in viewers’ minds.

LinkedIn banner template - business background example

Office desk LinkedIn banner

Office desk LinkedIn business background

An image like this can let potential employers know you’re accustomed to working in an office and are eager to pitch in and see how you can help.

When using an image that doesn’t really have any dead spaces, as in the banner below, think about where you’ll place your name and any other copy. And, of course, don’t forget about where your profile photo will overlay the image.

Office desk LinkedIn banner - business background example

Research LinkedIn banner

Research LinkedIn business background

This banner image for LinkedIn is a little more abstract, but evokes synergy, research and critical thinking. The different wires branching out could symbolize connection, or even, a system.

This would be a good pick if you’re in the research, marketing or design fields… or all of the above, like in the example below:

Educator LinkedIn Banner

If you’re looking for something simple yet eye-catching, try this zig zag illustration in vibrant colors. The lines here suggest someone who thinks in a non-linear manner — perfect for showcasing the unique points of view you bring to the table.

Whether you’re in education (like the example below), in a creative field or in a more laid-back business field, this versatile LinkedIn background would do the trick.

company background presentation

When thinking about a business background image for your Zoom meetings, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. First off, an aspect ratio of 16:9 is best for these images. And like with LinkedIn, you’ll want to think about the other thing people on the call will see: you.

Where will you sit within the frame? You’ll be centered, most likely, depending on how your camera is set up, so consider this when choosing your image. (Here are a few more tips for a great Zoom setup.)

Let’s look at some examples:

Cozy Zoom background

Cozy business background

With more and more people working from home even after the pandemic , you may not want people to see into your actual space. So, why not give Zoom meeting attendants the illusion you live and work in a cozy space like this one?

This image comes from the following presentation template, but you could easily customize it to work as a Zoom background.

Cozy presentation images - business background example

Modern kitchen Zoom background

Modern kitchen business background

Don’t want to show folks a fake living room? What about a fake kitchen? If you’re anything like me, the last thing you want people to see is your real-life messy kitchen, so think about an image like this as your Zoom virtual background.

Again, I found this option in a presentation template — it contains a few other images that could work as your Zoom background too.

Modern real estate presentation - business background example

Nature Zoom background

Nature business background

Go artistic (and botanical) with your Zoom meeting background and try an image like this one. Maybe mix up a piña colada with an umbrella if you really want to create a tropical vibe (but only after 5 p.m., right?).

Inspired by the following green-forward presentation, this Zoom background is an easy, soothing option:

Nature presentation - business background example

Office Zoom background

Office business background

You can also keep things corporate with a background image like this one. The benefit of using an image like this, as opposed to showing your actual office, is that you can control what people see… rather than leaving that up to the whims of your co-workers.

I found this beautiful loft-like office image in the following presentation. The image on the first slide would be a good choice, too.

Office presentation - business background example

By default (unless you installed special templates), PowerPoint’s slide sizes are 4:3 (standard) and 16:9 (widescreen). So, the first thing you need to decide is what size to use for your presentation.

Standard slides are closer to square, while widescreen slides are much more horizontal. But the following images will work for just about any PowerPoint size you go with, depending on the content for each slide:

Corporation PowerPoint background

Corporation business background

Choose an image like this for your PowerPoint if you want to give your company an edgy, urban vibe. As you can see in the presentation below, this background can serve as the only big image in a presentation, or it can work as a series of city-based photos.

By dialing the opacity down on the image and underlaying a gray background, the designer of this presentation achieved a cooler, monochromatic look. Bonus: the image distracts less from the content this way.

Corporation PowerPoint presentation - business background example

(Want to know more about how to make stock images play well with your content? Here are our 10 best tips for incorporating stock photos into your designs .)

Finance PowerPoint background

Finance PowerPoint background

Keep it corporate with this PowerPoint background image that looks toward the sky (and skyscrapers). Use it on its own as the only image in a presentation. Or, further curate the vibe by adding simple aesthetic images to the rest of the slides, as the presentation below does.

To achieve the softer tone of the main image, the designer reduced the opacity and added an orange-colored background in this instance.

Finance PowerPoint presentation - business background example

Team-themed PowerPoint background

Team-themed business background

Emphasize the team-focused nature of your company with this all-hands-on-deck business background image for your next PowerPoint presentation. Keep the theme going by adding additional images of people’s hands or groups, as this presentation does.

Again, the designer here added a gray background behind the image and reduced the opacity to create a grayed out effect.

Team-themed PowerPoint presentation - business background example

Creative PowerPoint background

Creative business background

You may think you’ll have a captive audience with a PowerPoint presentation, but this isn’t always the case. And in any event, it’s still important to create a beautiful, eye-catching design. If your PowerPoint presentation slides are more vertical than horizontal, consider this image as the first slide.

As you can see in the report below, it can work well with more understated images on other slides.

Creative report - business background example

As we’ve seen, business presentation backgrounds don’t come in just one form. Nor do you have to stick with one style. The perfect business presentation background image will depend on your goals and content, which is why it’s useful to have many to choose from.

Here are a few more of my favorite options:

Minimalist presentation background

Minimalist presentation business background

This business presentation background image has a clear minimalist vibe — perfect for giving your presentation an understated but authoritative air.

See the slides below if you’re not convinced!

Minimalist presentation - business background example

Bold power presentation background

Bold power business background

Alternatively, you could also take a maximalist approach. Try using a high-energy image that will (ideally) leave your audience charged up.

You can see this image in use in the presentation below, but it could work for any other business presentation that needs to have a similar, energetic vibe.

Bold presentation - business background example

Light wood presentation background

Light wood business background

Sometimes you want a business presentation background to feel more like, well, a background element. When that’s the case, consider something like this image. The gray woodgrain floor provides some texture and visual interest, without overpowering the content.

In the example below, the designer adjusted the hue of the wood image to match the teal elements by adding a background of that color and reducing the opacity a smidge.

Light wood presentation - business background example

Not quite what you’re after? Here are over 15 more presentation background examples that are sure to engage your audience.

Professional business background images can run the gamut from simple artwork to complex, high-contrast photos. The right one depends on your needs in the moment, so it’s a good idea to have a supply of them on hand for different purposes.

Here are some more options to suit a variety of needs:

Abstract colorful background

Abstract colorful business background

The low-poly art style used in this image could work for a variety of business communication needs, including a presentation (as seen below). But it could easily slot into a social media template or even a business card, too.

Digital marketing presentation - business background example

New York background

New York business background

Especially for firms actually based in the city, New York is a popular option for photography-based business background images because it’s so iconic. Whether you’re adding it to your business card, as seen below, or a presentation, few cities are as immediately recognizable.

As you can see in this example, the designer added a reddish background and dropped the opacity on the image to achieve a cohesive look and feel with the front of the card.

New York business card - business background example

Geometric photography background

Geometric photography business background

While this image appears in a business card below, it would work for just about any professional business need. The urban vibe it gives off can skew more corporate or more indie, depending on the elements surrounding it, which makes it incredibly versatile.

Versatility is important, as one key to making a lot of visual content is using similar (or the same) assets over and over again in new ways. For example, you could repurpose any of these versatile flyer background images , too.

Geometric photography business card - business background example

Business photo backgrounds for your presentations, LinkedIn pages or Zoom calls can be just about anything!

You can go literal and have a picture of yourself or the front of your business. Or, you can get a little “thinky” and abstract with things.

Here are some examples:

Strategy business background

Strategy business background

How can you get abstract? Creating a presentation to go over a new strategy you’ve come up with? Use an image like this one, as chess is the ultimate game of strategy.

While the presentation below has nothing to do with chess in a literal sense, using the photo immediately calls strategy to mind.

Strategy presentation - business background example

Technology business background

Technology business background

If your presentation is about a specific product or technology, it can be helpful to showcase what you’re talking about. For example, using an image of a person wearing a VR headset is a natural pairing for a presentation about tech trends, like the one below. But this image would also be perfect for a company in the VR space.

You know the drill: the designer tinted this image pink to match the rest of the presentation with the help of a background and opacity drop.

Technology trends presentation - business background example

Desktop business background

Desktop business background

Some business photo backgrounds create fun design opportunities, like this one. Super-impose whatever you want on the computer screen, as in the presentation below. You could showcase a series of icons, an image of your new store, a computer program… the sky’s the limit!

Desktop marketing presentation - business background example

Of course, if you want something truly unique, you might have to make your own background. Don’t worry, it’s easier than it seems. Check out these free background generators .

There you have it! Hopefully, at this point, you’ve found the right business background for your needs or at least some inspiration.

If you’re getting ready to dive into your project, here are a few quick business background design tips to keep in mind:

  • Set the right tone: an overly whimsical background image is probably not the right note to strike in your annual corporate presentation. But by the same token, it’s perfectly appropriate to use images with lighthearted themes for certain needs. So be sure the vibe created by the background image matches what you’re going for.
  • Think about your content: depending on what’s in your background image, you might end up with spaces on the image that are darker or lighter or where there’s little if any visual content. Use these as opportunities for displaying content. If you find you have to move elements around too much in order to make them legible, then that’s probably not the right image for you.
  • Don’t always take things literally: getting a bit abstract can be an excellent way to create a subtle connection between your background image and your content. Say, you’re putting together a monthly presentation during December and you want to use a wintry theme. Instead of an image with snow, consider one that’s an icy blue instead.
  • Consider your platform: keep in mind, some of the business background images we talked about today have specific technical needs. For example, as I mentioned earlier, Zoom, recommends users upload images for virtual backgrounds at an aspect ratio of 16:9 , which is 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. But for an annual report that’s going to be printed on an office printer, you’ll need images that fit better into a letter or A4-sized presentation.

Showcase your professionalism with these business background images

There are so many options for business backgrounds. Hopefully, you found a few you love in this post.

Stavropol, South Russia: In Search of Gorbachev’s Roots

The origins of a soviet leader revered as a visionary reformer in the west, but reviled as a weak American puppet in his native land

This article is taken from the July 2021 issue of The Critic. To get the full magazine why not subscribe? Right now we’re offering five issue for just £10 .

P eople of my generation — Westerners at least — who grew up at the tail-end of the Cold War can still get a bit starry-eyed about Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, the former Soviet premier who celebrated his ninetieth birthday in March this year. Leader from 1985 to 1991, he seemed to end the Cold War overnight, showed us “communism with a human face” and appeared at pains to sign away the nuclear weapons we had spent our childhoods cowering from.

A leader popular enough to get a nickname, to us he was “Gorby”, the man in the black trilby, the approachable Soviet premier that Margaret Thatcher could “do business with”. He was the communist who made Reagan revise his estimates of the USSR as “an Evil Empire” and consign the phrase to “another time, another era.”

company background presentation

Yet in Russia itself, away from metropolitan liberal circles, pro-Gorby declarations are usually met with pity or contempt. In his own country, he is remembered as the windbag with port wine stains — “Misha the Marked” — the apparatchik who harangued them with interminable speeches in a Wurzel-like Southern burr and let them down where it really mattered. He left the economy in ruins, the shops empty, the queues for household goods a daily torment.

With his perestroika (a radical restructuring of Soviet life) and glasnost (openness) he managed to break up an empire, shaking the USSR so hard it came to pieces in his hands. “A traitor”, you hear, “a weak, soft leader”, “naïve”, a “bad politician” and — the worst crime of all — “He was working for the Americans”.

Objections that he worked not for but with the Americans and had to do so to save the Soviet economy, are usually dismissed. For many, Gorbachev did the unforgivable. “What can one make,” muttered one Russian acquaintance, “of a man who inherits a family of nations and then just gives it all away?”

Yet as with so many of my generation, Gorby-loyalty is in my DNA. Those of us who have spent our adult lives travelling or living in Eastern Europe largely owe them to Gorbachev and his reforms, his demolishing of the Iron Curtain. At any rate, when I was offered the chance to visit his birthplace in South Russia earlier this year, I grabbed it at once. There were few world-figures whose origins interested me more.

Cupolas and idealism

G orbachev’s birthplace, Privolnoe, can be found about 90 miles north of Stavropol, the Southern city he was later to make, as Regional General Secretary, almost literally his own. It’s a village of about 3,000 people surrounded by, as he put it, “steppe, steppe and more steppe”, endless flat green prairie.

Alongside the motorway heading to it are numerous roadside cemeteries and thickets of trees all painted, in the Russian way, fetlock-high in whitewash, a precaution against insects and heat. The sun beats down from a vast sky and the floating clouds are a procession of wonderful shapes. Some look like work-brigades, some faintly like sputniks, others like combine harvesters. Here the weather can change instantly: Brits will feel at home. Privolnoe today is a well-manicured collection of one-storey brick or wooden houses complete with iris-blue shutters. It is surrounded by playing fields for the village’s kids, and springy-looking meadows with wildflowers.

Unlike many Russian villages it has an infrastructure — for which read a bar and a decent supermarket — and everywhere there are stabs at a kind of (naïve) idealism. By the side of the road an enormous figure of a goose sits by a fairy-tale well, with the slogan “Protect Beauty” next to it. There’s a children’s playground called “The Ant Hill” with a mocked-up dragon and robots, and an Eternal Flame at the end of an avenue.

Nearby is one of the city’s war memorials. As different from ours as can be imagined, it shows the faces, absurdly young, of four of the city’s fallen, with “They Could Have Lived” accusing you beside them. Right behind are the cupolas of the village’s Orthodox Church — funded, it seems, heavily by Gorbachev — and the village’s “House of Culture” for knees-ups and fun. Though populated, like most Russian villages, either by children or the elderly (those of working age have left for the city) it’s a place whose pride in itself is clear.

Childhood of terrors

I t was Gorbachev’s house I wanted to find, and the first person I asked pointed me to it. It can be found by turning left down a side-road, then left again by the school — a dull grey building with happy transfers of aeroplanes and tanks stuck to the window, at which Gorbachev himself studied way back when. There’s little fanfare surrounding the Gorbachev home: simply a grey brick building behind fences with a metal roof and those trademark blue shutters which seem to define the village. It looks closed-up and unvisited, except by foreign film crews and Gorb-anoraks such as myself.

When I tell a cashier at the local shop why I’m there, her lip curls: “Oh, so you respect him in England, do you?” In a BBC news extract from 2016, villagers were more balanced. “Of course, Mikhail did a lot for our village, a lot,” one local says, “but as for the USSR, we’re upset about that.” Another echoes him, “Germany’s united now, but our country fell apart. That’s a mistake by our leaders. They could have saved it.”

Privolnoe has endured worse. The village, founded in 1861, has been through as much as any southern Russian village, but 1931, when Gorbachev was born, was one of the low points. Stavropol Krai , Privolnoe’s region, is heavily agricultural, packed with sunflowers and wheat. This made it vulnerable to Stalin’s collectivisation campaign, as he wrenched private land away from reluctant local farmers, to herd them into kolkhozes — collective farms — or send the richer of them to the Gulag.

For those who didn’t comply, a worse fate awaited, and this spelt terror for places like Privolnoe. A terrible famine was inflicted on the South — most notoriously in the Ukraine but here and in Kazakhstan as well — as an already chaotically disrupted workforce saw the grain quotas demanded of them soar, starving the locals to death.

Family memories

I t became a capital crime to steal even an ear of corn, and between 1932 and 1933, two of Gorbachev’s uncles and one of his aunts were to die of starvation. Gorbachev’s earliest childhood memory was of his grandfather boiling up frogs in a desperate attempt to feed his family. He remembered, he said, their white stomachs floating in the bubbling water, though couldn’t remember if he’d choked one down or not.

Such memories are far from uncommon in this region: many families went through the same. Nor was it unique that both Gorbachev’s grandfathers — farmers the pair of them — should be imprisoned under Stalin. One of them, the communist Pantelei, whose zeal didn’t save him from arrest quotas in 1937, was tortured so badly he returned, Gorbachev said, a permanently altered man. The other, Andrei — a pronounced anti-Red — worked so hard in the Gulag he came back from Siberia with four medals for it, thereafter swallowing his politics and getting on with the job.

The terror of Gorbachev’s early childhood gave way to others as the Germans roared into his village in 1941

As his biographer, William Taubman, pointed out, Gorbachev’s life as a child was already ideologically riven. Andrei’s house was stuffed with religious icons, Pantelei’s with portraits of Stalin and Lenin. The grandfather who believed in Christianity was hard as nails, while Pantelei, the Party Man, was warm and kind, and despite his rural background seemed almost an intellectual. Gorbachev seemed to live out these contradictions all his life.

The terror of Gorbachev’s early childhood gave way to others as the Germans roared into his village in 1941. Their four-month occupation left the place in tatters, the community divided, the women reduced to dragging ploughs themselves in a desperate attempt at a harvest. For a period, Gorbachev lived on a single cup of uncooked grain a day.

Later, as men up to the age of 50 were conscripted and the working age dropped to 12, he began to slog regularly as an employee of the Machine Tractor-Station. In 1949, just turned 18, he received “The Order of the Red Banner of Labour”. Along with his candidate membership of the Party, it ushered him into Moscow University, to study law. It was goodbye to the village.

Unstoppable rise

I t is difficult to think of greater contrasts to Privolnoe than Moscow, but Gorbachev never worked as the lawyer he trained to become there. When he emerged with a degree five years later, it was to a different world.

Gorbachev had in 1953 married his Raisa, a philosophy student, but something even more momentous happened that same year. A few months earlier, Stalin had died and the country was changing fast. In Stavropol region — Gorbachev went back there to start his working life — there was a shattering backlog of cases, as prisoners flung into Gulags for poor harvests in the thirties now had their charges re-evaluated and their sentences overturned.

company background presentation

To a newly-wed, one can see why the backbreaking tonnage of legal paperwork might not have appealed. Instead, Komsomol, the Soviet youth organisation (a kind of boy-scouts/girl-guides with political teeth) had vacancies, many of their senior members leaping to fill posts at the newly-created KGB. Within a few years, Gorby had been made Komsomol First Secretary for the region. His unstoppable rise had begun.

By now, he and Raisa were living in Stavropol. A fort-town in the North Caucasus, it was established in 1777 and is now Russia’s “greenist city”. Today Stavropol is stuffed with shopping centres, wine bars, street cafes and a population of 400,000. Back when Gorbachev arrived, it barely scraped a quarter of that, the town almost a big village.

Raisa Gorbacheva, she of the natty dress-sense and catty relationship with US First Lady Nancy Reagan, spoke about the “sea of mud” she had to cross to get to the Teachers’ Institute, the lack of central heating and running water (she and Gorbachev had to fetch theirs from a public fountain).

Not that life started very beautifully for the Gorbachevs in Stavropol. They lived in a single room with (in Raisa’s words) “a bed, a table, two chairs and two huge boxes full of books”. Raisa cooked each night on a paraffin burner in the communal corridor. The house, 49 Kazansky Street, a solid-looking affair, can still be found quite easily, up a slope and a sandy road, though there’s no plaque at all to its previous occupants (in fact Stavropol region, in terms of memorials, seems to have washed its hands of the Gorbachevs altogether).

As Gorbachev worked his way up through Komsomol and then the Party, their circumstances improved, with better properties on Morozov and Dzherzhinski streets. These names (still in place) are bitterly ironic — one referring to a young snitch (Pavel Morozov) who shopped his parents for unorthodoxy, the other to Felix Dzerzhinski, creator of the Soviet secret police. A Russia, in other words, Gorbachev did so much to try and free his people from.

Perestroika , he always said, had started for him in Stavropol. Made General Secretary for the entire region in 1970 — the Stavropol party boss — he brought in numerous reforms to agricultural work, introducing incentives and restructuring the farming system. Colleagues from the time have mixed memories. Some of them speak of his geniality, his openness and energy, the fact he drank so little. Yet historian William Taubman reports others describing him as “vain and easily offended”, “two-faced” in his habit of saying “different things to different people”, and “with a craving for power that led him to fawn on those who would give it to him.”

Such things though were endemic to the USSR and arguably came with the job, and the Gorbachev we know in the West was summed up by another colleague: “He was a great guy: inspiring, loved to joke and laugh, didn’t get drunk, a good, progressive thinker.”

Powerful allies

O nly one criticism was to dog him throughout his career: his failure to thank the people who helped him. Later, in the Kremlin, it bled loyalty away from those who might have been his rescuers.

But nothing helped Gorbachev more in his ambitions than Stavropol itself. At the bicentenary of the city in 1977 (part of his luck), a key visitor from Moscow was Mikhail Suslov — Chief Ideologue of the Party and creepy grey eminence of the Brezhnev years. Gorbachev, ever the genial host, schmoozed him and made an ally. He was boosted too by Stavropol’s geography, and those sanatoria in the Caucasian mountains. Not only Suslov but prime minister Kosygin and KGB head Yuri Andropov had diabetes and kidney problems. When they visited the South for treatment, Gorbachev was on hand to wine and dine them, gaining three patrons in the process.

In November 1978, after some stunning agricultural successes, he received the call to join the Central Committee in Moscow. He and Raisa packed their bags and left Stavropol forever — back to Moscow and the centre of power. Just seven years and three dead General Secretaries later, Gorbachev, aged 54, would be leading the whole empire.

His father Sergei, who from Privolnoe witnessed so many of his son’s successes, wasn’t alive to see these ones, having died in 1976 (his grave is easily locatable in Privolnoe’s tranquil cemetery). But his words from an earlier letter give some sense of what Gorbachev’s family might have felt:

“We congratulate you on your new job. There is no limit to your mother’s and father’s joy and pride. We wish you good health and great strength for your work for your country’s well-being.”

Heartening words, from a father to a son. But whether you nod respectfully at that final phrase or scream with laughter will very much depend, it seems, on a single thing: which side of the Iron Curtain you grew up on. Perhaps the last word, though, should go to Gorbachev himself. Asked by film-maker Werner Herzog in 2019 what his epitaph should be, he had a ready answer: “Mi staralis … We tried.”

The flag and coat of arms of Stavropol Territory were adopted in 15/05/1997 by the Local Parliament ( Krajevaja Duma ): Law on flag and Law of Coat of Arms. Michael Simakov , 13 Jan 1999

The law gives strange measures for the cross: 5,5+4,1+5,5:7,5+4,5+13. That doesn’t mean that the arms of the cross has different widths, as 4,1/15,1 ≅ 4,5/(25/3); the actual calculated value must have been 4,077 or similar, later rounded to 4,1… Of course a much better way to put it would be 73+54+73:90+54+156, being the overall flag dimensions of 200:300. This though involves a rounding and may mean that these dimensions cannot be resolved to a set of “nice” numbers — which in turn may mean that these measures were taken from a real, historical flag, hand made and thus geometrically “imperfect”. Finally, note that the flag - to - coat of arms ratios of arms given (6/16:5/25) also do not match the coat of arms, as the flag is 2:3 and the coat of arms approx. 9:10. Note also that 6/16ths (0,375) is more than 4,1/15,1ths (≅0,272) and thus the legal prescription stating that «the edges of which [of the coat of arms] shall not extend beyond the limits of the white field of the crossing» is incompatible with the (equally legal) ratios… António Martins , 22 Jan 2000

According to the law , this flag seems to come in two flavours: with full color coat of arms or monochrome. Of course we all would like to know the differences in legal and actual usage of these two different flag depictions, if any. António Martins , 22 Jan 2000

Law Of Stavropol Territory On The Flag Of Stavropol Territory (adopted by the State Council of S.T. 15.05.97) Article 1. The flag of Stavropol Territory is a symbol of Stavropol Territory, a member with full rights, and an indivisible part, of the Russian Federation. Article 2. The flag of Stavropol Territory is a rectangular bunting, gold in color, on which is depicted a white rectangular cross. The ratio of the breadth of the flag to its length is 2:3. The following proportions of the sides of the cross to the dimensions of the flag are used: vertically 5.5:4.1:5.5; horizontally 7.5:4.5:13. In the center of the cross is found a colored or monochrome (all in gold) depiction of the coat of arms of Stavropol Territory, the edges of which shall not extend beyond the limits of the white field of the crossing. The ratio of the breadth of the flag to the height of the coat of arms is 16:6. The ratio of the length of the flag to the width of the coat of arms is 25:5.

This coat of arms it is unusual in that the bottom partition shows an outline map of territory, complete with a cross marking the spot of the capital, and a longitude line showing 45°. Weird… António Martins , 22 Jan 2000

Is it my eyes but it is quite red at www.lenta.ru/vybory/2002%20Mar%2024/stavropol/ ? Dov Gutterman , 12 Oct 2002

Your eyes are OK, that image is a little wrong. Victor Lomantsov , 12 Oct 2002

It was either a mistake or there’s something we dont know regarding the way this flag is rendered in the real world — for what’s worth, I never saw this flag in the cloth before, only reconstructed images based on the law text. António Martins , 18 Nov 2002

Not only the background is oddly colored but also the coat of arms shows a coloration different from what is usually shown , the map being golden instead of void (blue), the upper division is light blue, not medium blue (a fundamental difference for Russian speakers), and the hillock depicted thereon is grey with a white stairway, instead of brown with a green one. The Ultimate Mother’s Day Playlist

By Rob Sheffield

Rob Sheffield

The annals of music folklore are full of unforgettable moms. There’s tough mothers, saintly mothers, evil mothers, motorcycle mamas, mothers of invention. Some stars love to do emotional tributes to their mamas, from Tupac to Taylor, from Dolly to Drake. Others celebrate the fearsome bad-ass maternal figures — whether it’s  LL Cool J ’s mama telling him to knock you out, or Rosalita’s mama chasing  Bruce Springsteen  off the porch with a broom. So here’s a few of our favorite mom songs, from pop, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and country.

Queen, ‘Tie Your Mother Down’

Don’t do that!

Drake, ‘Look What You’ve Done’

Host/singer Drake (R) with his mother Sandi Graham pose on the red carpet at the 2011 Juno Awards at the Air Canada Centre on March 27, 2011 in Toronto, Canada. (Photo by George Pimentel/WireImage)

Of all the many women in Aubrey Graham’s songs, none has a place in his heart like his mother Sandi. “Look What You Done” is a highlight from Take Care , where Drake thanks the women of his family: his aunt, his grandmother, but especially his mother. He recalls her health struggles and their arguments, but he promises her, “After all the things that we’ve been through, I got you.”

Dolly Parton, ‘Coat of Many Colors’

LOS ANGELES - 1978: Country singer Dolly Parton poses for a portrait session in 1978 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry Langdon/Getty Images)

One of Dolly’s most beloved songs—a down-home ballad about growing up in a poor family with a mama who taught her what love is all about, sewing her a coat from a box of rags. Dolly has given the world so many different mother figures, but they’re not all saints—as in “Travelin’ Man,” on the same Coat of Many Colors album, where her mama steals her guy.

2Pac, ‘Dear Mama’

company background presentation

So many rap classics about the heroic moms who held it down, from Snoop Dogg’s “I Love My Momma” to Biggie’s “Juicy” to Nas’ “Dance.” But Tupac did the most famous of them all with “Dear Mama,” paying tribute to the Black Panther revolutionary Afeni Shakur. As Pac says, “Ain’t a woman alive that could take my mama’s place.”

Victoria Monet, ‘On My Mama’

Victoria Monét On My Mama Music Video

“When they say, ‘She get it from her mama’? I’m-a say, ‘You fucking right.” Any questions? Respect due to Victoria Monet’s mama and the fierce daughter she raised.

The Beatles, ‘Let It Be’

BEATLES 1966 Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison at Top Of The Pops

Paul McCartney sends out a prayer to his real-life Mother Mary, a Liverpool nurse who passed away when he was just a boy of 14. But in times of trouble, he still hears Mary McCartney’s voice, speaking words of wisdom. “Let It Be” has been a light in the darkness for listeners ever since.

The Beatles, ‘Julia’

UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1966: The Beatles, English music group Pop (1962-1970). Standing : Paul MacCartney and John Lennon (1940-1980). Seat : Ringo Starr and George Harrison (1943-2000). August 1966. (Photo by Roger Viollet Collection/Getty Images)

John Lennon, like Paul, lost his mother at a young age, and like Paul, he wrote a tribute that taught the world to say her name. “Julia” is a tender White Album love song, from a free-spirited son to his equally free-spirited mother. No rock band ever mythologized their mothers like The Beatles—even Ringo gave his Mum an entire album of her favorite songs in Sentimental Journey .

Taylor Swift, ‘The Best Day’

company background presentation

Taylor has spent her whole life singing the praises of Andrea Swift, but never more beautifully than in “The Best Day.” It’s a tearjerker for sure, telling their whole mother/daughter story. Every time Taylor performs live, one of the fan-fave moments is right before the show when Andrea walks to her seat and gets her own ovation.

Ghostface Killah & Mary J. Blige, ‘All That I Got Is You’

company background presentation

The Wu-Tang Clan’s Iron Man gives it up to the iron woman who raised him, saying, “This is dedicated to all the families that went through the struggle.” He gets real about how his mother (“my earth”) and grandmother kept the family together in the bleakest poverty, even the times when “mommy wasn’t strong enough.” It’s one of the rawest, most poignant rapper’s-mama tributes, with Mary J. Blige adding her heavenly soul vocals. Ghostface updated it in “Momma” on Fishscale , except with a lot more money, promising “I’ll Dior you out.”

The Shirelles, ‘Mama Said’

UNITED STATES - JANUARY 01: USA Photo of SHIRELLES, Beverley Lee, Doris Kenner-Jackson, Shirley Alston and Addie 'Micki' Harris (Photo by Gilles Petard/Redferns)

So much good advice to be learned from the wise moms of Sixties girl-group pop. In Motown, Diana Ross and the Supremes took their troubles to “Mother Dear”; over in Chicago, Jan Bradley sang “Mama Didn’t Lie.” But the sentimental faves have to be The Shirelles, who get through tough times by remembering, “Mama said there’ll be days like this.”

Merle Haggard, ‘Mama Tried’

LOS ANGELES - SEPTEMBER 1966: Country musician Merle Haggard (L) and his band "Merle Haggard & the Strangers" pose for a September 1966 portrait in Los Angeles, California. Guitarist Roy Nichols is seated on the right. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

Hag’s ultimate outlaw tale, sung from behind the bars of a jail cell. He grew up the rebel child of the family, while his saintly mama cried over him. Turning 21 in prison, doing life without parole, Merle recalls how she struggled to raise him right. But as he sings, “That leaves only me to blame, ‘cause mama tried.”

Kacey Musgraves, ‘Mother’

company background presentation

A short interlude on Golden Hour , only 1:18 long, but straight from the heart, as Kacey sings about living too far away from her mother, missing her over the miles from Tennessee to Texas. She revealed that she wrote it after getting a text from her mom while tripping on acid. Now that’s relatable.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, ‘Simple Man’

UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 01: Photo of Leon WILKESON and Ed KING and Gary ROSSINGTON and Billy POWELL and LYNYRD SKYNYRD and Ronnie VAN ZANT and Allen COLLINS; L-R: Leon Wilkeson, Billy Powell, Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Bob Burns, Allen Collins, Ed King - posed, group shot (Photo by Gems/Redferns)

Can you imagine how tough Ronnie Van Zant’s mama must have been? Now there’s a hard-ass Southern matriarch for you – she probably shot down a lot of free birds in her day. But Marion Van Zant gave Ronnie this advice: “Baby, be a simple kind of man/Be something you love and understand.” And he spent his life doing her proud. Of all the classic-rock mom tributes, “Simple Man” is the one that never fails to get those lighters lifted high and bring a tear to a biker’s eye.

Beyoncé, ‘Ring Off’

NEW ORLEANS, LA - JANUARY 31: Beyonce and Tina Knowles pose backstage at the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show Press Conference at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on January 31, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage)

Beyoncé pledges her love to Tina Knowles, in one of her most personal songs, in the aftermath of her parents’ divorce. She tells her mother, “Always know you got a daughter who’s proud you took the high road,” and adds, “You a killer, you so sexy!” It ends with words from Tina herself: “If you’re going through it, just know it’s called ‘going through it’—you’re not gonna get stuck there. You’re not gonna die, you’re gonna survive.”

Lucy Dacus, ‘My Mother and I’

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - MARCH 06: Singer/songwriter Lucy Dacus performs at the Ryman Auditorium on March 06, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images)

Dacus wrote this for Mother’s Day in 2019, but she isn’t going for hearts and flowers, as you can tell from the opening lines: “My mother hates her body / We share the same outline / She swears that she loves mine.” It’s for both her mothers—the one who raised her and the biological one she just met at 19. An astoundingly powerful song about growing up, guilt, and inheritance, with the kicker: “All she has given/All I have taken / All is forgiven / All is forsaken.”

Danzig, ‘Mother’

Danzig, performing on stage, Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles, CA, United States, 15th February 1995. (Photo by Niels van Iperen/Getty Images)

Glenn Danzig, the musclebound Misfits belter from hell, warns the mothers of the world not to let their children listen to evil music like this. He isn’t wrong.

Jay-Z, ‘December 4’

NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 29: Jay-Z poses with his mother, Gloria Carter during an evening of "Making The Ordinary Extraordinary" hosted by The Shawn Carter Foundation at Pier 54 on September 29, 2011 in New York City. (Photo by Jamie McCarthy/WireImage)

Has any artist ever created so many classic songs about his mother? Shawn Carter might hold the record, from “Blueprint (Momma Loves Me)” to “Smile,” where he stands by Gloria Carter as she comes out. But the Black Album jam “December 4″ is where they co-narrate the whole story of their hard-knock life together. Gloria recalls that he was “the only one who didn’t give me any pain when I gave birth to him.” Jay admits he made up for that later.

Carole King, ‘Where You Lead’

UNITED STATES - FEBRUARY 13: LAUREL CANYON Photo of Carole KING, posed, outside her home on Appian Way (Photo by Jim McCrary/Redferns)

Carole King wrote a classic ode to mom/daughter bonding—without even realizing she’d done it. When she sang “Where You Lead” on Tapestry , she considered it an adult love song. But years later, when it became the Gilmore Girls theme, King finally realized this is what the song was always meant to be. She asked Toni Stern to rework the lyrics, and sang it as a duet with her daughter Louise Goffin.

The Stratford 4, ‘Telephone’

company background presentation

A psychedelic shoegaze guitar tale about a rock & roll mom who’s partied harder than you ever will. Alone late at night, weary from too much dancing and decadence every night, he calls his mother for advice. She tells him, “When I was 22/I was a lot like you,” and orders him to go play some more  Dylan  and  Stones  albums. Coolest rock & roll mom in any song, ever.

Diana Ross and the Supremes, ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’

American vocal group The Supremes, New York City, February 25th 1966. Left to right: Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross.

The Supremes scored a Number One hit with this Motown mama-said classic. When these lonely girls feel like they can’t go on, all they have to do is remember what mama taught them: “You can’t hurry love / No, you just have to wait / Just trust, give it time/No matter how long it takes.” Listen to the woman—she knows what she’s talking about. Diana Ross gives one of her finest vocals, while James Jamerson lays down the mother of all basslines.

LL Cool J, ‘Mama Said Knock You Out’

company background presentation

You know, LL was totally right about the whole “don’t call it a comeback” thing. He’d just had one of his biggest and best hits in 1989, “I’m That Type of Guy.” But somehow the criticism spurred him to prove to Ma Dukes that her boy was indeed the future of the funk, in this old-school rap banger. LL’s mama Ondrea Smith makes a cameo in the video, calling him by his given name “Todd.”

Alicia Keys, ‘Superwoman’

company background presentation

Alicia sends this anthem out to superwomen everywhere, especially the moms, singing, “This is for all the mothers fighting for better days to come.”

Joni Mitchell, ‘Let The Wind Carry Me’

A portrait of Joni Mitchell being interviewed in 1972 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. (Photo by Gijsbert Hanekroot/Redferns)

A Seventies meditation on changing gender roles, as Joni Mitchell looks at her own troubled relationship with her mother, re-evaluating her rebellious teen years in light of her adult perspective. A highlight of her most underrated masterpiece, For The Roses .

Funkadelic, ‘Cosmic Slop’

UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 01: (AUSTRALIA OUT) Photo of FUNKADELIC; Posed group portrait of Funkadelic (Photo by GAB Archive/Redferns)

A young man moans over grimy Hendrix-gone-uptown guitars about being haunted by his mama’s deal with the forces of evil: To feed her kids, she sold herself as a dancer to the devil. (Take that,  Ozzy !) He hears her voice calling in his drugged-out head – “Would you like to dance with me?/I’m doing the cosmic slop” – as the guitars voice her soul.

OutKast, ‘Ms. Jackson’

company background presentation

Of all the songs for the baby-mamas’ mamas, this OutKast classic has to be the saddest and most honest. Andre 3000 sings, “Never meant to make your daughter cry.”

Japanese Breakfast, ‘Psychopomp’

AUSTIN, TX - MARCH 17: Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast performs onstage at Secretly Group & Friends music showcase during the 2016 SXSW Music, Film + Interactive Festival on March 17, 2016 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Amy E. Price/Getty Images for SXSW)

A poignant moment on Japanese Breakfast’s breakthrough album. Michelle Zauner devotes Psychopomp to mourning her mother Chongmi, a woman she portrays so beautifully in her memoir Crying in H Mart . It’s a synth-and-guitar setting for a voicemail from her mother consoling her, by saying “gwenchanta,” or “it’s all right” in Korean.

The Beach Boys, ‘Mama Says’

LOS ANGELES - MAY 1: The Beach Boys (L-R Carl Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine) Pose for a portrait session on May 1, 1987 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry Langdon/Getty Images)

Brian Wilson leads his bros through a brief a cappella tribute to maternal wisdom: “Eat a lot, sleep a lot, brush ’em like crazy/Run a lot, do a lot, never be lazy.” It’s the finale to their classic Wild Honey , ending on a note of family harmony.

2Chainz featuring YG and Offset, ‘Proud’

company background presentation

Three rap legends remind everyone they’re in the game just to make their mamas proud. 2Chainz remembers how they used to trap together out of the same house: “Me and mama got busted at the same time/Went to court and told the judge the same damn lies.” As he said, “We starved together, struggled together, hustled together, smiled together.”

Jan Bradley, ‘Mama Didn’t Lie’

UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 01: Photo of Jan BRADLEY; Posed studio portrait of Jan Bradley (Photo by Gilles Petard/Redferns)

A Chicago soul classic from Jan Bradley. Her mama didn’t raise no fool, teaching her the ways of the world: men are trash, don’t believe a word they say, stay in school. “She said, ‘Girl, stay in your class / You got a whole lot of growing and a-learning to do / So girl, don’t you go so fast.” Jan Bradley’s mama didn’t lie, and neither did Jan.

Madonna, ‘Promise To Try’

American musician Madonna performs in concert, New York, New York, circa 1989. (Photo by Larry Busacca/WireImage)

Madonna at her most autobiographical. “Promise To Try” was never a hit, or even a single, but it’s the intimate piano ballad at the heart of her classic confessional Like a Prayer . Madonna Louise Ciccone remembers the mother who shared her name, telling herself, “Never forget her eyes/Keep them alive inside.” She dedicated the album “to my mother, who taught me to pray.”

The Spinners, ‘Sadie’

UNITED STATES - APRIL 15: AMERICAN BANDSTAND - "Show Coverage" 1974 The Spinners (Photo by ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images)

If your mama has a taste for old-school Philly soul—and who doesn’t?—“Sadie” is the one. The Spinners never sounded sweeter, with everyone on the team putting their hearts into it—the genius producer Thom Bell, the house band MFSB, lead singer Phillipe Wynne hailing “the premier of ladies.”

Kanye West, ‘Hey Mama’

LOS ANGELES - FEBRUARY 10: Producer and rapper Kanye West and his mother Donda West attend the Kanye West and Creative Artist Agency Foundation launch of the Kanye West Foundation for music education in the schools, February 10, 2005 at the CAA offices in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by Frank Micelotta/Getty Images).

Kanye pays tribute to Donda West, a few years before her tragic death, with an emotional powerhouse from the jam-packed back-half of Late Registration , when he was still touching the sky. And there’s a sample of “Sadie.”

Sleater-Kinney, ‘Little Babies’

Portrait of Sleater-Kinney (L-R) Carrie Brownstein, Janet Weiss, Corin Tucker, backstage at The Fillmore in San Francisco, California, USA on 23rd September 2002. (Photo by Anthony Pidgeon/Redferns)

A catchy, hilarious, but tough-talking guitar rager about moms and daughters, with all of their conflicts. The punk rock goddesses in Sleater-Kinney make “Little Babies” one of the highlights of their classic Dig Me Out , with Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein trading off lines in a good-cop/bad-cop maternal dialogue, until they explode into the irresistibly rowdy chorus. Best rock-mom line: “Are you hungry? Did you eat before the show?”

B.B. King, ‘Nobody Loves Me But My Mother’

UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 01: Photo of BB KING (Photo by Fin Costello/Redferns)

B.B. King sings the blues, with the immortal line, “Nobody loves me but my mother, and she could be jiving too.”

Kate Bush, ‘Mother Stands For Comfort’

You know how sometimes you decide to drop in on your mom for a little surprise visit? Because you’ve just committed a murder and you need a place to hide, and you know she’ll take you in no matter what? Kate Bush makes this one of her most beautifully disturbing odes to motherly devotion.

Bruce Springsteen, ‘Rosalita’

American musician Bruce Springsteen plays at the Trenton War Memorial, Trenton, New Jersey, November 1974. (Photo by Allan Tannenbaum/Getty Images)

“I know your mama, she don’t like me/’Cause I play in a rock & roll band.” Rosie’s ma is a real hard-ass, but she’s a lot cooler than Sherry’s. To this day, Mama Rosalita is probably still shaking her damn head at that skinny guy from the swamps of Jersey.

Bruce Springsteen, ‘The Wish’

NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 15: Bruce Springsteen takes his final "Springsteen on Broadway" curtain call at Walter Kerr Theatre on December 15, 2018 in New York City. (Photo by Taylor Hill/Getty Images)

Another Bruce classic, but a very different story: “The Wish” is a tribute to his real-life mother Adele, and an emotional highlight of his Springsteen on Broadway show. He pulls up in a hot rod and tells mom, “We’ll find us a little rock & roll bar and baby, we’ll go out and dance.” They always loved that. “My mother and her two sisters were dancing machines,” he recalls in the Broadway introduction. “When she comes in the door, we make sure there’s music on. She wants to dance.”

The Shangri-Las, ‘Bull Dog’

The Shangri-Las, L-R Mary Ann Ganser, Betty Weiss, Marge Ganser and Mary Weiss, pose for a studio group portrait in 1964 in the United States. (Photo by Gilles Petard/Redferns)

Four tough-as-leather beehived girls from the mean streets of Queens – including a set of twins – they had the most epic battles with their moms, fighting over greaser boys in hits like “Leader of the Pack.” This time, though, it’s their boyfriend’s mother. “I’m in love with the prettiest boy in the U.S.A./But his momma bought a dog just to keep little me away!” Ma  tries to scare off those lust-crazed Shangri-Las, but it doesn’t work, because no bulldog is as fearsome as a Shangri-La in raging-pheromone mode. If you doubt punk rock women were kicking ass in the Sixties, start here.

The Backstreet Boys, ‘The Perfect Fan’

American vocalists Nick Carter, Brian Littrel, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, and AJ McLean, of the group the Backstreet Boys, pose for photographs, New York, New York, circa 1998. (Photo by Larry Busacca/WireImage)

The boy-band tradition is full of maternal devotion, going back to how New Edition and the New Kids both dedicated their debut albums to their moms. Brian, Howie, Kevin, Nick, and A.J. sum it up with their thank-you to “The Perfect Fan.”

ABBA, ‘Hey Hey Helen’

Abba 1975 (Photo by Chris Walter/WireImage)

Abba give some love to the Seventies divorced moms—not a demographic that got much attention on pop radio at the time. But Abba were a lot more candid chronicling the 1970s feminist revolution than supposedly edgier bands. Anni-Frid and Agnetha ask, “Is it worth the pain to see the children cry? Does it hurt when they ask for Daddy?” But they cheer on Helen as she rebuilds her life, to become “a woman of today.” Question: How did Abba’s best mom song get left out of both Mamma Mia movies?

Junior, ‘Mama Used To Say’

company background presentation

A great one-shot from the Eighties, with Junior Giscombe rising out of the London R&B scene. “Mama Used To Say” was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, with its zippy electro-soul beat and Junior testifying in the voice of a young Stevie Wonder, as he quotes his mother’s advice: “Live your life!”

Patti Smith, ‘Mother Rose’

Patti Smith during Patti Smith in Concert in Dublin - July 29, 2004 at Vicar Street in Dublin, Ireland. (Photo by Tom O'Donnell/WireImage)

Nobody tells family stories like Patti Smith—she wrote the all-time greatest baby-sister song (“Kimberly”), while also chronicling her father, her husband, her kids. But “Mother Rose” is a mystic tribute to her South Jersey mom: “She felt our tears, heard our sighs/And turned to gold before our eyes.”

Neil Young, ‘Cinnamon Girl’

BIG SUR, CA - SEPTEMBER 13-14: Neil Young plays his guitar during The Big Sur Folk Festival on September 13-14, 1969 at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. (Photo by Robert Altman/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

“Mom, send me money now”: How many footloose hippies have sent a letter like that back home since 1969? But only Neil Young was honest enough to admit it in a song.

Ernie K-Doe, ‘Mother-in-Law’

UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1970: Photo of Ernie K-Doe Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

And then there’s this less sentimental blast of New Orleans funk, where Ernie K-Doe compares his wife’s meddling mother to Satan. Allen Toussaint provides the ice-coldest nine-note piano solo in history.

The Intruders, ‘I’ll Always Love My Mama’

American soul band The Intruders perform at the 1973 Watts Summer Festival concert, held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California, 19th August 1973. Held annually, the Watts Summer Festival commemorates the anniversary of the Watts riots. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

Another Philly soul classic from Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the Intruders’ most famous hit is a family affair, proclaiming, “She’s my favorite girl!” From their album Save the Children , which also had their heart-tugging version of Paul Simon’s “Mother and Child Reunion.”

BTS, ‘Mama’

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - DECEMBER 26: Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, RM, V and J-Hope of BTS attend the 2016 SAF Gayo Daejeon at COEX on December 26, 2016 in Seoul, South Korea. (Photo by The Chosunilbo JNS/Imazins via Getty Images)

J-Hope sings of his gratitude to “Mama,” in a gospel-style standout from the BTS album Wings . It starts out in 2006, when he’s a child learning to dance with her help; it follows her support and encouragement over the years, as she teaches Hobi that failure is the mother of success.

The Five Stairsteps, ‘O-o-h Child’

UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1970: Photo of Five Stairsteps Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

Few vintage soul sounds can soothe a troubled mind like Aloha Burke’s voice as she sings the opening lines of this dusty Chicago groove: “Ooooh child, things are gonna get easier / Ooooh child, things’ll get brighter.”

Al Wilson, ‘Queen of the Ghetto’

Soul Singer Al Wilson poses for a Rocky Road Records publicity still circa 1974. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

The late, great R&B singer is best remembered today for his Number One hit, “Show and Tell,” one of the Seventies’ suavest love jams. But Wilson got grittier in his ode to a matriarch who did what she had to do to put food on the table – and he’s nothing but proud.

Johnny Paycheck, ‘I’m The Only Hell (My Mama Ever Raised)’

Promotional studio portrait of American country singer and songwriter Johnny Paycheck (Don Lytle) (1938 - 2003), 1977. (Photo by Archive Photos/Getty Images)

A classic of outlaw country, the twanged-up honky-tonk tale of a bad, bad man who’s done some evil deeds—but he’s always got a soft spot for Mama. (And ONLY for Mama.) Johnny Paycheck, the ornery hombre who sang “Take This Job and Shove It,” makes the whole bar sing along: “She tried to turn me on to Jesus/But I turned to the devil’s ways/And I turned out to be the only hell my mama ever raised!”
