Can You Change Your Common App Essay After Submitting?

The essay is a vital part of your college application. It’s not only a place to showcase your writing skills, but also demonstrate your personality — the qualities you can’t reveal through your grades and test scores.

If you make a mistake or realize your essay isn’t quite what you want it to be, it’s nerve-wracking. What can you do? Is it possible to change it after you click submit?

You can make any number of changes to your Common App essay — and any other component of your application — once you’ve submitted it. However, these changes will not be reflected in applications that have already been submitted; they will only appear in future submissions. (The Common App likens your submission to dropping it in a mailbox.)

If you want to make changes to an essay you’ve already submitted to an institution, you will need to contact that school’s admissions office to see if it’s possible. We only recommend doing this if there’s a major error with your essay, as it won’t reflect well on your proofreading skills to try to slightly modify your essay after submission.

When Should You Change Your Essay?

The best course of action is to ensure that your essay is polished and written to the best of your abilities before you submit it to any college. However, there are some circumstances under which you should make changes.

If you made a mistake, for example, you should try to fix it for future applications. (That doesn’t mean you should call up an admissions office over a misplaced comma — we’re talking major errors.) You also might want to change your essay if you plan to cover a similar topic for a specific school supplement. Or, if you got deferred, you may want to try to improve your essay for the regular admission cycle.

Tips for Changing Your Common App Essay

1. save the older version somewhere else..

Before you do anything, save your current version elsewhere, such as in a Google doc. You don’t want to make changes and not be able to access your previous version, should you decide you preferred the old one more.

2. Reflect on flaws in the older version and target them in your revisions.

When revising your essay, focus on what was missing in the old version. You don’t want to go crazy with the revisions — more than likely, there were some strong pieces in your previous draft. Instead, just focus on what really needs improvement, and focus on this when editing.

In some cases, you may actually want to start from scratch, especially if you feel that your essay topic didn’t properly capture your personality. It is okay to start over, but make sure it’s something you 100% want to do before proceeding.

3. Make sure the changed essay complements the rest of your application and supplements.

Your application is a cohesive representation of you. The pieces should go together to present a clear picture of you as a student and a person. When you make edits, ensure that the essay still complements the rest of your application. Avoid having it overlap with other pieces, such as your school-specific supplements. At the same time, you should ensure that you’re addressing every part of your background and personality that you want the adcom to see.

4. Double- and triple-check before submitting.

This, of course, is something you should do before you hit send in the first place. Read your essay over several times. Read it aloud, too, because this can help you spot errors you may miss reading it silently. Get another set of eyes on it if you can.

We get it. You pressed submit on your personal statement and now you’re wondering: Did spellcheck miss something? What if I wrote a really bad essay and got rejected early and YIKES now I want to change it? And, if so, what do I do next?

But there is good news, too. You can do better next time.  

While you can’t edit your personal statement after submitting it to a college, you can edit it between submitting applications . So if you pressed submit there is something you can do to avoid that sinking feeling in your stomach next time. 

This is our checklist for making sure that the personal statement you submit is truly your best work. Save it, follow it, and avoid that sinking feeling:

Write a fantastic college essay ( btw we can help with that ).

Use a spelling and grammar check software like Grammarly to check your essay for spelling errors, grammar errors, confusing wording, and repeated words or punction marks.

Ask a parent or teacher to review your essay for spelling, grammar, and formatting issues — because sometimes tech misses something.

Save your final essay as a PDF. While the Common App accepts multiple file formats, PDF is our preferred format. 

But What if the Problem Isn’t Spelling? 

If the problem isn’t a spelling error and you’re nervous that your essay simply wasn’t good enough, first we need you to take a deep breath. We’re used to hearing from students soon after they’ve pressed submit that their essay was terrible and the world is ending and they’ll never get into college. That’s normal human anxiety talking, and we understand.

If you still believe your essay has serious flaws after you take a sec to relax and reflect, it’s time to bring in help . And not the same help you used last time because, clearly, that hasn’t worked out for you. 

Before you submit another application, you have the opportunity to rework, improve, or even totally overhaul your personal statement — but remember, decisions made out of panic or anxiety are rarely sound ones. Don’t start fiddling with your personal statement until you’ve had time to cool off and can address what you have to work with from a place of strategy and reason.

Since 2015/16, applicants can edit their Common Application essay as many times as they would like after submitting it (in previous years a maximum of three edits was allowed). Does this mean that you need to edit it for each separate College you’re applying to and create separate essays? With the amount of time and effort this will take against the benefit gained, our recommendation is that you just submit the one essay. If a particular college such as a highly orthodox religious one, a very conservative one or a very liberal arts one wants to focus on specific behaviors and activities, they are likely to ask for this in a supplementary essay anyway.  Ultimately it is your choice but whatever your decision, if you find you need to edit your essay after submission (e.g. you’ve just noticed one of your facts is slightly incorrect or the circumstances you talked about in your essay have substantially changed) you really have a limitless opportunity to edit. Before submitting your essay we really recommend editing it as much as you can to save post submission changes. Editing can be broken down into a number of key steps.

1. Spelling and grammar

It’s a cinch to use the spell checker on your word processing package but this may not pick up every single spelling. For example ‘their’ and ‘there’ are spelt correctly but have completely different meanings. Certain words although plural have a single verb which your grammar check may not pick up either e.g. ‘the news are good’ is incorrect and should be ’the news is good’. Therefore please read and re-read your essay for spelling and grammar and ask at least one other person to read it purely to check for this.

2. Punctuation

Are you sure you have full stops and capital letters in all the right places?

Have you used any commas where there should be full stops?

What about apostrophes being correct?

The advice is the same as for spelling and grammar; check, re-check and ask a second person.

3. Linkage and flow

In your essay do each of your paragraphs flow in chronological order and does each introductory sentence link back to the outcomes of the previous paragraph?

Is the main content of your paragraphs reflecting what you’ve introduced in your opening sentence? If you’ve added a sentence at the end of the paragraph as it was an extra idea you had, could the flow of your essay work better if you moved it to another paragraph or even into the introduction?   Your essay topic should tell a story from start to finish and not ebb and flow backwards and forwards.  It’s worth editing and then editing again until you’re happy with it.

4. Emphasis and impact

Has your introduction set the scene and focused on what your essay will be about? You then need each paragraph to relate back to this and show the impact that you’ve made. If you write about evidence and statistics, you need to be 100% certain of your facts. Have you checked them against a reliable well known source? In your conclusion always make sure you summarize and focus back to your main topic. It’s very easy to meander off on a tangent, so at the end of your first draft of your essay when you start editing it, have the prompt and the topic you’re writing about in front of you and review each sentence separately and check it relates back accordingly.

5. Word count

The 250 to 650 word count is mandatory and you won’t be able to submit your essay unless it is within this limit.

Always try to write more in your first draft and edit the words down to reach the word count.

You'll find it's easier to remove a few words when you’re editing than it is to start thinking of a new idea to increase the word count.

6. Choice of words

This is very important as it can help you personalize your essay and showcase how individual you are.

Try to avoid ‘get and got’ as they are passive verbs which don’t add any value to your sentence.

Instead ‘gain, believe, achieve, run and wish’ all express emotion or action and show how you feel.

7. Proofreading

There are two types of proofreading; spelling, grammar and punctuation checks and sense checks for facts, flow, accuracy and understanding.

You need to ask other people to proofread your essay and if possible ask different people to sense check to those proofing for spellings etc. You can ask family and friends and also your school teachers.

Editing your Common Application essay is fundamental to your application and is a necessary part of the process. It really doesn’t matter how many times you edit, it’s the final version that matters.

Editing and editing again will help you hone your final essay to be the best you’ve ever written.

Personal Statement - Change After Submission?

I recently completed my personal statement and most of my candidate kit and submitted it for review. I noticed I answered the essay prompts as two separate essays and not a singular essay. I didn't catch this error until after submitting. Should I be worried about this mistake? If so, is there a way I can edit my personal statement after submitting it? The website still let me submit my essays, so I didn't go over the character/word count. There is an option to review and withdraw next to my application file, but I don't know if the withdraw button will pull my entire application or not. Thanks in advance.

Do not use the Withdraw feature. It will withdraw your whole application for this admissions cycle (c/o '27) and you won't be able to reapply until next admissions cycle(c/o '28). You can check with your admissions counselor about your personal statement. I think I have seen someone else ask this question before and if I remember correctly you can't change your personal statement after submission. But you should check with your admissions counselor to make sure that is the case.  

Can I send different personal statements using the Common App to diff colleges? how?

<p>Once you submit the Common App to one school, you cannot change anything (except the college-specific materials in the beginning of the application). So, no, as far as I can tell, you can’t change your personal statements, 150 word descriptions, etc.</p>

<p>Hahaha oh wow, well I guess it’s worth it if you really want to submit different things to different places. My hat’s off to anyone who does this.</p>

<p>It isn’t difficult at all, and in many cases it makes sense to do it. In my case last year, one of the universities I was applying to did not offer the major I had specified on the common app - they had a different name for that area of study - so I felt I would have appeared uniformed and uninterested had I applied to a major they did not have. The Common App sub-forum is a great source of information on filling out the Common App.</p>

<p>@tocollege, i posted a nearly identical thread on the Common App subforum but only got 1 reply. it doesn’t get as much traffic as this larger Admissions forum.</p>

<p>but yeah, it does make a lot of sense to do it. for example, if i use a really major-specific personal statement on how i’m so determined to become successful in a particular profession for a school like cornell, it probably wouldn’t be as appreciated at a school like uchicago which really values coming in with an open mind freshman year and being willing to try new things.</p>

<p>You should just fill out separate hard copies of the CA and then mail them to the places if doing it online is that complicated.</p>

<p>NB: If you want to replicate Common Application, do that BEFORE you submit anything off it, even a supplement. Because once you do that, you can no longer delete the college and re-add it… That’s what happened to me - I submitted the supplements for Cornell and Harvard before I found out how to replicate the application and as a result, the same application went to Wash U (that’s where I submitted it initially), Cornell and Harvard. I freaked out and emailed Cornell and they let me send in a hard copy of CommonApp, and I’m still waiting for reply from Harvard.</p>

<p>As I read the instructions, all of the information on the second version of the Application can be edited.</p>

<p>It sounds like BeyondReality’s problem is that he first submitted the application to WashU, and then submitted supplements to Harvard and Cornell BEFORE he replicated the application itself. Probably because those supplements had already been submitted, the software did not allow him to move those schools to a new version of the application.</p>

<p>Finally, this is perfectly legit, as long as the information on both versions is truthful.</p>

<p>Creating a replicate copy of your application is simple. I recommend doing it if you want to tweak your information for each college. If you follow the directions in the early post it will take you less than one minute.</p>

<p>You can edit almost everything. You have to submit it to one university first though, dont be scared you wont be able to edit it.</p>

Reasons to Consider Updating Your Personal Statement

1) not getting enough interviews.  .

Perhaps you are running low on interview opportunities. As such, it is common to wonder what could be going wrong. One issue could be that you did not get the right help or enough help crafting your personal statement(s). It is very possible that your personal statement might be completely missing the mark. Additionally, it could be turning programs off from you as an applicant for reasons you did not realize before. 

2) Outdated or irrelevant information.

For example, some applicants leave an asterisk noting the arrival of test scores. Or, perhaps there were extenuating circumstances that you included in your original application which are no longer relevant to you anymore. 

3) New and important experiences. 

The application season takes many months. In September, when you may have applied, perhaps you didn’t have US Clinical Experience. But now you have a wonderful experience that would be very powerful and helpful for you to share. Of course, this is another great opportunity to keep fine-tuning your application throughout the season.
