Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours." – Alan Bennett, The History Boys

books and education quotes

It may be controversial to say, especially as an English teacher, but I write in my books. I’ve had students gasp at this comment, but it’s the way I read. I underline parts of the book that I like. I underline if I like the way the words sound, or as a silent “Yes!” or as a way to commit those literary quotes to my memory. This may all be a bit meta. Quoting author John Green, ”Maybe our favorite quotations say more about us than about the stories and people we’re quoting.” If you’re also inspired by the words of others, read on to find some quotes from books that speak to you.

books and education quotes

I have often argued that I would not let any teacher into a school unless – as a minimum – they had read, carefully and well, the three great books on education: Plato’s Republic, Rousseau’s Émile and Dewey’s Democracy and Education. There would be no instrumental purpose in this, but the struggle to understand these books and the thinking involved in understanding them would change teachers and ultimately teaching.

These are the three great books because each is sociologically whole. They each present a description and arguments for an education for a particular and better society. You do not have to agree with these authors. Plato’s tripartite education for a just society ruled over by philosopher kings; Rousseau’s education through nature to establish the social contract and Dewey’s relevant, problem-solving democratic education for a democratic society can all be criticised. That is not the point. The point is to understand these great works. They constitute the intellectual background to any informed discussion of education.

What of more modern works? I used to recommend the “blistering indictment” of the flight from traditional liberal education that is Melanie Phillips’s All Must Have Prizes, to be read alongside Tom Bentley’s Learning Beyond the Classroom: Education for a Changing World, which is a defence of a wider view of learning for the “learning age”. These two books defined the debate in the 1990s between traditional education by authoritative teachers and its rejection in favour of a new learning in partnership with students.

Much time and money is spent on teacher training and continuing professional development and much of it is wasted. A cheaper and better way of giving student teachers and in-service teachers an understanding of education would be to get them to read the 50 great works on education.

The books I have identified, with the help of members of the Institute of Ideas’ Education Forum, teachers and colleagues at several universities, constitute an attempt at an education “canon”.

What are “out” of my list are textbooks and guides to classroom practice. What are also “out” are novels and plays. But there are some great literary works that should be read by every teacher: Charles Dicken’s Hard Times – for Gradgrind’s now much-needed celebration of facts; D. H. Lawrence’s The Rainbow – for Ursula Brangwen’s struggle against her early child-centred idealism in the reality of St Philips School; and Alan Bennett’s The History Boys – for Hector’s role as the subversive teacher committed to knowledge.

I hope I have produced a list of books, displayed here in alphabetical order, that are held to be important by today’s teachers. I make no apology for including the book I wrote with Kathryn Ecclestone, The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education because it is an influential critical work that has produced considerable controversy. If you disagree with this, or any other of my choices, please add your alternative “canonical” books on education.

School book challenges continue despite new Florida rules

  • Jeffrey S. Solochek Times staff

The big story: In recent weeks, Florida officials have taken steps to dampen school book challenges, adopting laws and rules aimed at cutting the number of titles removed from shelves.

The efforts didn’t change the underlying laws that prompted some school districts to pull materials while reviewing content. And they don’t seem to be stopping the flow of community complaints.

The Hillsborough County School Board will hear two on Monday. Hernando County’s board will take up 24 a week later. Author Sonya Sones hopes to convince the Hernando district to leave her book “The Opposite of Innocent” available for teens who might benefit from it. Read more here .

A free book each month for preschoolers, thanks to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

books and education quotes

Waylon Piechowiak was laughing and running around a play area inside the Early Learning Coalition of Marion County building on Thursday. His mother, Elizabeth Ekleberry, an employee at the center, smiled as she watched her son.

Ekleberry said she loves to read. She reads a book to Waylon and his 10-year-old brother every night before the kids go to bed.

For the next three years, Waylon will receive a book a month for free, thanks to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library .

About 50 people gathered Thursday morning at the coalition offices for a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the new partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Among those in attendance was Ocala Mayor Ben Marciano.

Waylon was the first child from Marion County to sign up for the program, officials said.

According to officials at the center, those interested in the program can enroll their child or children at  ImaginationLibrary.com/USA/Affiliate/FLMarionCo . Once a child is enrolled, the first books will be sent to the child's residence within 12 weeks. Each month, the child will receive a free book until their 5th birthday.

Coalition CEO Carrie Theall said in a press release that the community's response has been positive. "Over a thousand children were registered in less than a week. This shows us the level of interest parents have to increase the pre-literacy skills of their children.”

Ekleberry wished the program was available for her older son. She said once she learned the program was coming to the community, she quickly signed up Waylon.

"I was waiting for the moment," she said.

Information on the Dolly Parton library and Early Learning Coalition

According to its website , Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has been in existence since 1995, and by 2003, had mailed 1 million books to children. In 2022, the site states, 2 million books were mailed each month globally. The program has reached Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, according to the website.

The goal of the Early Learning Coalition of Marion County is to "meet the early care and education needs of children and families in Marion County," according to a press release announcing Thursday's event.

Coalition officials said "they implement the Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK), School Readiness, and Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) programs on behalf of the Florida Department of Education Division of Early Learning."

Additional information about the coalition can be obtained by calling (352) 369-2315 or visiting  ELC-Marion.org .

Factbox-Key Quotes From Trump's Criminal Hush Money Trial

Factbox-Key Quotes From Trump's Criminal Hush Money Trial

By Luc Cohen and Jack Queen

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Opening statements kicked off on Monday in the criminal hush money trial of Donald Trump and the first prosecution witness, the former publisher of the National Enquirer, took the stand. Trump has pleaded not guilty to falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment made by Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.

Here are some key quotes from the proceedings:

-"This case is about a conspiracy and a cover-up, an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of a presidential election, and then the steps that Donald Trump took to conceal that illegal election fraud,” prosecutor Matthew Colangelo told the jury during his opening statement.

-“No politician wants bad press, but the evidence at trial will show that this was not spin or communications strategy. This was a planned, coordinated, long-running conspiracy to influence the 2016 election, to help Donald Trump get elected through illegal expenditures to silence people who had something bad to say about his behavior,” Colangelo said. “It was election fraud, pure and simple.”

“The defendant disguised his reimbursements to Michael Cohen through 11 falsified invoices, 12 falsified ledger entries, and 11 falsified checks,” Colangelo said.

Colangelo also described an alleged scheme to “catch and kill” Playboy model Karen McDougal’s story of a months-long affair she says she had with Trump, which is not a formal part of the indictment.

“The evidence will show that the defendant desperately did not want this info about Karen McDougal to become public because he was worried about its impact on the election,” Colangelo said.

Trump has denied the affair.

-Trump lawyer Todd Blanche countered that Trump, whom he referred to as President Trump, is innocent.

"President Trump did not commit any crimes. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office should never have brought this case,” Trump lawyer Todd Blanche told the jury during his opening statement.

-"There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election. It’s called democracy. They put something sinister on this idea, as if it’s a crime,” Blanche said.

-Blanche said that despite Trump’s celebrity and stature as a former president, he is also a husband and father.

“He is in some ways larger than life, but he’s also here in this courtroom doing what any of us would do: defending himself,” Blanche said.

"President Trump fought back like he always does and like he’s entitled to do to protect his family, his reputation and his brand - and that is not a crime,” Blanche told the jury.

-Blanche asserted that Stormy Daniels is lying about the former president for financial gain.

“She saw her chance to make a lot of money, and it worked,” Blanche said, referring to the hush money payout.

He also said Cohen was not trustworthy.

-"He has a goal - an obsession - with getting Trump,” Blanche said of Cohen, adding that he had lied under oath during previous testimony in other cases. “I submit to you that he cannot be trusted.”

-David Pecker, the former publisher of the National Enquirer and the first prosecution witness to take the stand said he had the final say over publishing decisions.

"Yes. I had the final say on the celebrity side of the magazine industry, at least on the tabloid side. We used checkbook journalism and we paid for stories," he said.
