Working hours are usually advertised as being 35 to 40 hours per week. In reality you'll work longer hours as required, in order to complete projects and reach publication deadlines and targets. Highly experienced and knowledgeable academic researchers may work freelance, completing numerous short-term contracts. Some employers allow staff to request a period of sabbatical leave, normally lasting three to 12 months. This is typically unpaid, but working freelance or writing a book can develop long-term career prospects.

  • High-quality research is crucial to higher education institutions, as it ensures funding. You will be under pressure to publish research and show you are an integral part of the department's success.
  • The working environment will vary depending on your specialist area, especially while completing fieldwork. It could involve working in noisy, dirty and potentially dangerous environments, and will involve some travel around the UK and potentially overseas. Qualifications

To have a successful, long-term career as an academic researcher, you'll need to gain a degree relevant to your area of interest, followed by further qualifications and experience. It's a highly competitive field to enter, so strong evidence of the necessary skills and experience is crucial.

This usually involves completing a Masters course followed by a PhD. As part of your PhD you'll be expected to write a thesis of between 60,000 and 90,000 words, outlining your research plan.

It's relatively common for graduates with a four year undergraduate Masters qualification, such as MMath or MSci, to progress straight onto a PhD. The fourth year usually comprises a substantial research project, accounting for 60% to 100% of the course, which can evidence research, analytical and other relevant skills.

Some academic researchers enter the role following a successful career in industry, after gaining significant experience and completing relevant professional qualifications. This is likely to occur in more vocational areas, and so the lack of a PhD need not be a barrier to success. However research intensive universities may still prefer to recruit applicants offering higher level research qualifications.

As the usual route into a successful career as an academic researcher is via a relevant PhD, you need to focus on gaining research experience that will help you to achieve this as a next step. Funded summer research internships for undergraduates are available at universities around the UK and involve working alongside PhD students and experienced researchers.

Research internships are often open to students from any institution, with successful applicants often having achieved exceptional results in their pre-university qualifications and first year undergraduate assessments. These opportunities may be based in research institutes, universities or a combination of the two, and are an ideal opportunity to demonstrate your potential to a future supervisor and develop your network.

Similarly, industry-based summer internships in a research and development environment can also provide excellent experience and insights. Some academic researchers enter the role with significant industry experience, rather than a PhD, so you should explore all relevant options and apply accordingly.

Other routes in include starting in positions working on research projects for other people in positions such as research assistant or research fellow. This allows you to gain relevant experience in the field and get paid while you do.

Professional development

As an academic researcher in a university, you'll have access to a range of training courses to enhance your effectiveness in the role such as IT, report writing, using data and statistics, media training, effective leadership, research techniques, administration and funding application training. These may be delivered as stand-alone courses or as part of a coordinated training programme aimed at PhD students or early career researchers. You may also have access to mentoring schemes and shadowing opportunities.

As an academic researcher, you are responsible for your own professional development and are expected to identify areas of need to focus on.

Some universities will require you to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE). You can undertake a PGCHE through part-time study on your own campus, or you may need to attend elsewhere. Some UK universities offer a blended-learning option. The cost of the course is almost always covered by your own university if taught by your institution. If your university doesn’t offer their own PGCHE, there are usually agreements that cover the cost of doing the course elsewhere.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The School of Information at UC Berkeley and its Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity welcomes applications for a 2 year, full‐time, Research Director at the Associate or Full Research Scientist level, with an expected start date of Summer or Fall 2024 in the area of Cybersecurity. This Research Director will oversee the research agenda for, help further build, and be an ambassador for the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC), and will conduct research on issues connected to the policy, business, economics, governance or usability of cybersecurity.

The Research Director will pursue their own research program and will set the intellectual agenda and future direction of CLTC. The Research Director will also supervise the academic personnel within the existing programs (including but not limited to AI and Security, Structural Internet Vulnerability, and Public Interest and Cybersecurity). This role includes mentoring of postdoctoral scholars, setting direction for partnering with outside collaborators, and pursuing extramural funding. The Research Director will represent and promote CLTC research externally, including outreach to external organizations and funders, the research and practice community at large, which will require occasional domestic travel. The Research Director will work in partnership with an Executive Director and a small administrative staff who are responsible for day-to-day operations.

The role includes acting as the Principal Investigator for a robust research program that must include scholarship on topics in one or more of: cybersecurity capacity-building and resilience, security and privacy needs of at-risk populations. Additional areas of research can include but are not limited to cybersecurity and privacy including practices and technologies for preventing unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, inspection, recording, or destruction of information, as well as applications to areas ranging from local government and community organizations to finance, healthcare and cyber-physical systems.

The position will include research collaboration with other Berkeley research centers and external partners; with CLTC faculty and research affiliates; and participation in the intellectual community at the School of Information, on the Berkeley campus and beyond.

This position is a year-round, senior research position. While engaging with graduate and undergraduate students is an important aspect of this role, it does not have teaching responsibilities.

About CLTC: The Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC) is a premier research and collaboration hub dedicated to building secure digital futures. It was founded in 2015 to build bridges between academic research communities, corporations, government policy makers/regulators, and civil society, and to envision solutions that enable the potential of digital technologies to advance and protect institutions, societies, and individuals. CLTC built and launched the world’s first public-interest cybersecurity clinic.

This is a hybrid role with 3 days/week on campus, and job duties may include occasional evening events.

DESCRIPTION

The UC San Diego Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) advances scientific discovery to improve health - bringing discoveries from the lab to the bedside. ACTRI was established to provide education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area. It encompasses four hospital systems, two universities and four biomedical research organizations. It receives partial funding from a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the NIH, National Center for Advancing Translational Science.

Under general supervision of the finance manager, the incumbent provides financial management, administration, and reporting for the ACTRI and clinical research administration (e.g. Office of Coverage Analysis Administration, Office of Clinical Trials Administration, Office of IRB Administration, etc.) The incumbent resolves variances, identifies problems, formulates and makes recommendations in accordance with departmental, university, and agency regulations. Act as liaison with the Controller's office, Vice Chancellor Health Sciences Business Finance team, General Accounting, and other central departments for the acquisition and administration of research and operational funding. Provides sound fiscal advice, assists and guides faculty and department support staff. Works closely with the Principal Investigators (PIs)/ Department Managers in reviewing and monitoring the fiscal status of funding sources including and making recommendations and offering solutions to resolve fiscal matters. Prepares regular reports and proposal accurately.

Uses professional concepts. Applies organizational policies and procedures to resolve various issues. Works on problems of limited to moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of multiple factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Contacts are primarily internal to the department, but may also be external.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Six years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.

Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.

Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize, and perform basic financial analysis assignments.

Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.

Demonstrated ability using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.

Demonstrated interpersonal skills at all levels within the unit; excellent service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.

Ability to adapt to changing priorities.

Ability to function as a member of a team.

Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $61,800 - $108,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.60 - $51.72

Mechanical Engineer

At BNL, the Energy & Photon Sciences (EPS) Directorate is working to solve grand challenges that will create solutions and security for the nation’s energy system. Advances in basic science are the underpinning of transformational discoveries that rely on Brookhaven’s data-driven research, cutting-edge synchrotron science, and leadership in energy science through real-time study of applicable energy materials in working conditions. As part of the capabilities and science focus of the EPS, the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is a state-of-the-art medium energy 3 GeV (3-billion-electron-volt) electron storage ring. The facility offers scientific and industrial researchers an array of instruments (beamlines) using x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light to enable discoveries in clean and affordable energy, high-temperature superconductivity, molecular electronics, and more.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Physical Science and Research Operations Division (PSROD) of the NSLS-II currently has a full-time opportunity for a Beamline Mechanical Engineer. The selected candidate will lead and manage engineering and development of assigned engineering tasks through modeling, analysis, creating specifications, arranging fabrication, and procurement with participation in assembly, tests, installation, and commissioning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Close interactions with beamlines scientific and technical staff to design and build synchrotron beamlines, their components, and associated scientific instrumentation to support research projects and the respective endstations.   • The core responsibilities include detailed specification, design, analysis, arranging fabrication/ procurement, testing, installation, and commissioning of x-ray beamlines components and endstations instrumentation.  • Prepare engineering calculations, inspection/reports, and QA documents.  • Provide technical guidance and supervision to project designers and technicians. • Assist Project Management teams in developing project plans, presentations, budget estimates, and work schedules. • Provide technical input in internal and external design reviews.  • Develop bid documents, evaluate bid proposals, and make contract award recommendations. • Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline and at least 3 years of related experience. • Substantial knowledge in mechanical design of complex instrumentation, analysis (including FEA), materials, and advanced manufacturing processes. • Working-level knowledge and experience with 3D CAD modeling software  • Manual dexterity and experience with hands-on work for both assembly and disassembly of delicate equipment. • Ability to interpret and work from procedures, drawings, user manuals, and verbal instructions. • Ability to develop complete, accurate, and detailed work packages, specifications, drawings, and other engineering documents. Experience with ordering and tracking materials as well as developing BOMs. • Effective interpersonal, oral, and communication skills. The ability to work effectively with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) • Some travel may be required

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• A master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline and 7+ years of experience • Good understanding of standard production techniques and approaches including machining tolerances, welding and brazing practices, EDM (electrical discharge machining), laser and waterjet cutting. • Working knowledge and experience in thermal, and structural analysis using ANSYS and 3D modeling with Inventor.  • Working knowledge of (high/ultra-high) vacuum, cryogenic, and precision motion equipment.  • Experience with troubleshooting and maintenance of complex technical equipment. • Experience working at a synchrotron facility.

DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $23.8B, and another $10.5B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The Program Management Office (PMO) within BEDC provides technical support to the project delivery teams. This includes the following sections and groups: Project Controls, Schedule Controls, Permitting Support, Cost Estimating, Business Solutions, Data Analytics, and management of the Enterprise Program Management Information System (ePMIS). The PMO uses people, processes, and tools to mitigate issues that may impact a project. BEDC seeks to hire a Computer Associate (Software) 3 for the Program Management Office (PMO) located in the Lefrak Office in Queens, NY. Under direction of the PMO Business Solutions Manager, and with some latitude for independent initiative and judgement, the selected candidate will serve as a Business Analyst for the Bureau of Water & Sewer Operations (BWSO). The selected candidate will need to be skilled in application development to support best in class management of BWSO’s capital program, primarily the Lead Service Line Replacement Program. The Business Analyst will manage data captured on the huge variety of elements in project delivery to support Project Teams and all levels of Management. The Business Analyst will also maintain and develop tools within existing DEP-used technology, such as eBuilder and SQL, to capture, manipulate, or output engineering project management data. Typical tasks will include: - Address system users support requests - Interface with technology providers personnel to address problems - Support ongoing maintenance of reporting and data solutions - Analyze business requirements into technical requirements for reporting/visualizations, data models, and databases. - Review technical specifications derived from technical requirements - Participate in the design, performance, and code review process - Oversee development and maintenance of the department's data repository and ensure successful data gathering and validating the accuracy of the data prior to publication of reports - Develop IT-based solutions consisting of contextual, conceptual, and logical architectures using standards-based, rigorous methodologies and best practices. **** Only those applicants with permanent Civil Service status as a Computer Associate (Software) are eligible to apply to this JVN. 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in computer science or a related computer field and one year of satisfactory full-time computer software experience in computer systems development and analysis, applications programming, database administration, maintenance and support, systems programming, data communications, mainframe development, mobile development, web development and design; or 2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of satisfactory full-time computer software experience as described in "1" above; or 3. Education and or/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. College education may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience in "2" above on the basis that 60 semester credits from an accredited college is equated to one year of experience. In addition, 24 semester credits from an accredited college or graduate school in computer science or a related field, or a certificate of at least 625 hours in computer programming from an accredited technical school (post high school), may be substituted for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least one year of satisfactory full-time experience as described in "1" above.
