This outrageously funny esports comedy follows Vivian "V" Lee (Paris Berelc), a competitive gamer whose impressive skills have landed her a college scholarship and a place on the Betas, Barrett University's male-dominated team. But when the Betas' captain Dustin (Taylor Zakhar Perez) tells V she'll never be a starting player, it's game on. Joined by her best friend Sloane (Hari Nef), and under the guidance of her coach Parker (Ruby Rose), V forms a fierce all-girl team to band together with one common goal: level up to the nationals...and take down the Betas!

What's the Story?
In 1UP, V ( Paris Berelc ) and Sloane (Hari Nef) are best friends who are teammates on their college's esports team, the Betas. While V is attending Barrett College on an esports scholarship, she and Sloane are perpetual benchwarmers due to Dustin, the team captain, being an obnoxious jock who doesn't think women can compete with the men in esports. Tired of Dustin's attitude, V and Sloane quit the Betas and decide to start their own team: The 8-Bits. Their coach, Parker ( Ruby Rose ), a video game history professor at the school, must find a way to make this team of quirky misfits work together. When V learns that the school is planning on keeping only one esports team for next year, she must find a way to take the 8-Bits all the way to the national championships, even as Dustin and the other Betas are determined to stop them by any means necessary.
Is It Any Good?
You can't break stereotypes and clichés while also heavily relying on stereotypes and clichés. And yet, 1Up tries to do just that. It champions diversity and inclusion in an arena (esports) that has had its share of controversy concerning the overall culture, even as countless individuals have found a sense of belonging and community in that culture in ways they may not experience in the off-screen world. The movie does its best to address and confront these aspects to gaming culture, but it's also trying to be a kind of coming-of-age college comedy with bawdy language, dorm room 'shroom trips, and awkward first dates.
It doesn't work, mostly because it's trying to break the mold while remaining firmly entrenched in the mold of the "scrappy misfit" sports movie. Besides those stereotyped jocks, there are also the clichés of the "nice guy," the middle-aged administrator trying to remain relevant to "the kids" by using the parlance of today (in this instance, "cancel" and "my pronouns are..."), and the blissed-out roommate fond of yoga and hallucinogens, among other beyond exhausted character types. Also, 15 minutes into the movie, you can easily guess who the team of scrappy misfits will play in the movie's climactic scene and how that will turn out for them. Ultimately, as a movie that's trying to be a comedy, in spite of any good intentions, it's not all that funny.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how gaming and esports are represented in 1Up . Did it accurately portray gaming culture? Why, or why not?
How is this movie a version of the "scrappy underdog" movie? What are some of the clichéd storylines and characters?
Why is it important to have greater diversity in movies? How does this movie show the ways in which gaming can be inclusive to all?

In 1973, Leni Riefenstahl was in a bit of a pickle. Nearly thirty years removed from the suicide of the Fuhrer in his eagles nest bunker, she was still primarily identified as the last living remnant of the propaganda arm of the third Reich, her artistic output, all her filmography, dotted with the permanent asterisk of context for how her contributions to the field of editing and filming motion and montage was in service to a genocidal fascist regime of losers who wanted to purify the earth for an imagined imperium.
Though, unlike her contemporaries, she skirted judgement at Nuremberg for her complicity and guilt in transforming the minds of the German people toward a paranoid hateful frenzy, she was…

Calling “1Up” the worst movie of the year is an understatement. It’s more than the worst movie of the year, it’s one of the worst movie’s ever made. This probably doesn’t come as a surprise to most people but I didn’t expect it to be this bad .

1Up is an Amazon Prime underdog competition comedy about a group of ladies who form an all-women's university eSports team. Can this plucky bunch of stereotypes beat the sexist goons on the top-rated team? Have you seen a movie before?
The premise of an all-girls team fighting against sexism is fine... but when I saw BuzzFeed as a producer, my eyes rolled. I figured I knew exactly what kind of back-patting preaching this movie was going to loll in.
And I was wrong. This flick trades in stereotypes you just know the website has written a hundred and five listicles against. Sure, the trans woman is given heart but the fat girl? ALL the fat jokes. The loopy crazy girl?…

You know, throughout the vast majority of the film I really considered being sympathetic and giving this a light 2, but I realized that I couldn’t allow myself to rate it any higher than a 1/10 because:
- BuzzFeed - Parallels to GamerGate - Ruby Rose - Lying about video games pandering exclusively to men up until recently - Dissing Lara Croft - Cringe dialogue - References to dabbing - References to internet “cancelling” - Referencing Fortnite - Referencing Captain Marvel - “Movies based on video games suck lol” - Utilizing just about every sports movie cliché in the book - Depicting almost every guy as obnoxious, misogynistic, or thirsty (but maybe that’s actually a pretty accurate depiction of College,…

'1UP' Trailer Shows Paris Berelc Leading an All-Girls Esports Team Primed and Ready to Win [Exclusive]
It's win or game over in Kyle Newman's new film.
Collider is excited to unveil an exclusive trailer for Kyle Newman 's new film for Prime Video 1UP , a tale of one girl's journey to form an all-girls Esports team and take down the sexist boys group that cast her out. The trailer sees Paris Berelc ( Hubie Halloween ) round up a group of girls that are ready to game and finds a coach in the form of her professor ( Ruby Rose ) to train them ahead of the big matchup that will decide not just the fate of their team, but their fate in the school. The film is set to release exclusively on Prime Video on July 15.
The footage properly introduces Vivian Lee (Berelc), aka V, a varsity Esports player who breathes gaming. It's all she does day and night with hopes of carrying her team, The Betas, to success. Unfortunately for her, The Betas suck. Despite being a nationally ranked player on her team, her male teammates don't see her for her skills but only allow her on the team because she's a girl. They are the epitome of "git gud scrub" obnoxious male gamers. Team leader Dustin ( Taylor Zakhar Perez ) is particularly degrading and won't take fault for his mistakes, all pushing V to, understandably, quit the team in disgust even if it means putting her scholarship in danger. She has only one course of action to keep it - form a new varsity team. With funding only available for one team, her path runs straight through The Betas.
The rest of the trailer is essentially a training montage as part of V, her friend, and their new female teammates' revenge arc. At first, things don't go well with The Betas trouncing them, but no good revenge arc starts without the heroes at their lowest. This ragtag group finds their savior in their professor who gives them a new name, The 8-Bits, and all the old-school gaming training they need to succeed. Her methods are unconventional, ranging from live-action role-playing to creating a "realistic" Beta dummy to focus their anger on, but it's enough to prepare them for nationals, and for The Betas.

Alongside Berelc, Rose, and Zakhar Perez, 1UP also features Hari Nef ( Assassination Nation ), Nicholas Coombe ( The Wilds ), D.J. Mausner ( Insecure ), Madison Baines ( Transplant ), Lolita Milena , Kevin Farley ( The Waterboy ), and Stephen Joffe ( Alias Grace ). Originally, Rose's role as the team's coach and generally cool, all-inclusive gaming professor Parker was held by The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page , but the actor ultimately stepped away from the production.
Newman directs and also has a part in the film with Julia Yorks ( The Adventures of Puss in Boots ) on board to write. 1UP marks Newman's first feature behind the camera since his 2015 action comedy Barely Lethal . Newman is also known for working alongside major music artists, directing two videos for Lana Del Ray as well as for Taylor Swift 's "Style." The film is a collaboration between Lionsgate and BuzzFeed Studios.
1UP releases on Prime Video on July 15, 2022. Check out the exclusive trailer, a quote from Newman about the film, and a new still and poster below.
I am beyond thrilled to share the trailer for my new film 1UP. (To my knowledge) It’s the first scripted comedy set in the very current world of eSports. My mission was to craft a film that does justice to modern gaming, as well as one that speaks to all generations of gamers. From Pong to League of Legends , Super Mario to Cuphead… the film is brimming with references and Easter eggs to arcade and console classics. It’s a pop culture bonanza! Gaming is truly for everyone — but certain stigmas still permeate game culture. 1UP offers a very real commentary, in a heightened and comedic way, on those divides. And while 1UP is a gender comedy at heart, it’s also a sports film. As a filmmaker, it was a real challenge to invigorate life into watching people watch screens. But we developed a lively and kinetic visual vernacular which, I hope, pulls viewers in and showcases this exciting sport. Everyone is also playing a new game in 1UP ( Knights of the Elder Orb ) and at times the story takes us into that game which provides for some truly memorable scenes. The film boasts over 1100 VFX shots and nearly 4 minutes of animation (in a multitude of styles). It was a beast of a film to shoot in just 25 days on a tiny budget, to say the least. It was pure joy to work with this gifted cast (anchored by Paris Berelc, Ruby Rose, Hari Nef and Taylor Zakhar Perez) and the forward-thinking Richard Reid at Buzzfeed Studios. I really believe we’ve crafted a story that gamers can be proud of — I know we are.
Ruby Rose & Hari Nef & Paris Berelc in eSports Comedy '1UP' Trailer
by Alex Billington June 22, 2022 Source: YouTube
"You never go full chicken, Lilly!" Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for an eSports comedy titled 1UP , the latest from filmmaker Kyle Newman (of Fanboys and Barely Lethal previously). The film is about a gamer who quits her college sports team due to sexism from all the men, and decides to start her own team to compete in the league and beat the men. This borrows the classic 90s sports comedy movie structure where a frustrated but talented player breaks off and creates an underdog team as they fight to take down their former teammates - except that this is set in the eSports world where racism & sexism is still rampant. Paris Berelc stars as "V", for Vivian, and is joined by Ruby Rose , Hari Nef , Madison Baines , Lolita Milena , D.J. Mausner , Taylor Zakhar Perez , & Naomi Kyle . It does look like direct-to-video quality, but might still be funny enough to enjoy. What's the game they're playing in the big competition? Have fun.
Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Kyle Newman's 1UP movie, direct from Lionsgate's YouTube :

Joined by her best friend Sloane (Hari Nef), and under the guidance of her coach (Ruby Rose), V and a fierce all-girl team band together for one common goal: level up to the nationals… and take down the Betas! 1UP is directed by American filmmaker / writer Kyle Newman , director of the films Fanboys and Barely Lethal previously, as well as "The Crazies" TV series and a few other short films. The screenplay is written by Julia Yorks. This hasn't premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Lionsgate will debut Newman's 1UP streaming on Prime Video starting July 15th, 2022 this summer. How does it look?

1up trailer gives first look at ruby rose’s new video game comedy.
The upcoming film 1Up explores sexism within the world of competitive gaming and finds Ruby Rose playing the coach of a college esports team.
The trailer for 1Up is offering a first look at Ruby Rose's latest film, which centers around the world of competitive gaming. Directed by Kyle Newman, whose previous work includes Fanboys and Barely Lethal , the upcoming comedy follows Vivian, an esports gamer who, after receiving a college scholarship to play for Barrett University, faces sexism within the school's male-dominated squad and ends up forming her own all-girls team to compete at nationals. In addition to Rose, who stars as Vivian's coach, Parker, the film features Hubie Halloween 's Paris Berelc , Taylor Zakhar Perez, and Hari Nef. 1Up , produced by Lionsgate and Buzzfeed Studios, is set to premiere on Amazon Prime on July 15, 2022.
The first trailer for 1Up was recently released by Lionsgate Movies and introduces audiences to Berelc's nationally-ranked player Vivian, as well as the dynamic between her and Dustin, the captain of Barrett's team. Now streaming on:
"Up" is a wonderful film, with characters who are as believable as any characters can be who spend much of their time floating above the rain forests of Venezuela. They have tempers, problems and obsessions. They are cute and goofy, but they aren't cute in the treacly way of little cartoon animals. They're cute in the human way of the animation master Hayao Miyazaki . Two of the three central characters are cranky old men, which is a wonder in this youth-obsessed era. "Up" doesn't think all heroes must be young or sweet, although the third important character is a nervy kid.
This is another masterwork from Pixar, which is leading the charge in modern animation. The movie was directed by Pete Docter , who also directed " Monsters, Inc. ," wrote " Toy Story " and was a co-writer on "WALL-E" before leaving to devote full time to this project. So Docter's one of the leading artists of this latest renaissance of animation.
The movie will be shown in 3-D in some theaters, about which I will say nothing, except to advise you to save the extra money and see it in 2-D. One of the film's qualities that is likely to be diminished by 3-D is its subtle and beautiful color palette. "Up," like " Finding Nemo ," "Toy Story," " Shrek " and " The Lion King ," uses colors in a way particularly suited to its content.
"Up" tells a story as tickling to the imagination as the magical animated films of my childhood, when I naively thought that because their colors were brighter, their character outlines more defined and their plots simpler, they were actually more realistic than regular films.
It begins with a romance as sweet and lovely as any I can recall in feature animation. Two children named Carl and Ellie meet and discover they share the same dream of someday being explorers. In newsreels, they see the exploits of a daring adventurer named Charles Muntz ( Christopher Plummer ), who uses his gigantic airship to explore a lost world on a plateau in Venezuela and then bring back the bones of fantastic creatures previously unknown to man. When his discoveries are accused of being faked, he flies off enraged to South America again, vowing to bring back living creatures to prove his claims.
Nothing is heard from him for years. Ellie and Carl ( Edward Asner ) grow up, have a courtship, marry, buy a ramshackle house and turn it into their dream home, are happy together and grow old. This process is silent, except for music (the elder Ellie doesn't even have a voice credit). It's shown by Docter in a lovely sequence, without dialogue, that deals with the life experience in a way that is almost never found in family animation. The lovebirds save their loose change in a gallon jug intended to finance their trip to the legendary Paradise Falls, but real life gets in the way: flat tires, home repairs, medical bills. Then they make a heartbreaking discovery. This interlude is poetic and touching.
The focus of the film is on Carl's life after Ellie. He becomes a recluse, holds out against the world, keeps his home as a memorial, talks to the absent Ellie. One day he decides to pack up and fly away -- literally. Having worked all his life as a balloon man, he has the equipment on hand to suspend the house from countless helium-filled balloons and fulfill his dream of seeking Paradise Falls. What he wasn't counting on was an inadvertent stowaway, Russell ( Jordan Nagai ), a dutiful Wilderness Explorer Scout, who looks Asian American.
What they find at Paradise Falls and what happens there I will not say. But I will describe Charles Muntz's gigantic airship that is hovering there. It's a triumph of design, and perhaps owes its inspiration, though not its appearance, to Miyazaki's "Castle in the Sky." The exterior is nothing special: a really big zeppelin. But the interior is one of those movie spaces you have the feeling you'll remember.
With vast inside spaces, the airship is outfitted like a great ocean liner from the golden age, with a stately dining room, long corridors, a display space rivaling the Natural History Museum and an attic spacious enough to harbor fighter planes. Muntz, who must be a centenarian by now, is hale, hearty and mean, his solitary life shared only by robotic dogs.
The adventures on the jungle plateau are satisfying in a Mummy/Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones sort of way. But they aren't the whole point of the film. This isn't a movie like " Monsters vs. Aliens ," which is mostly just frenetic action. There are stakes here, and personalities involved, and two old men battling for meaning in their lives. And a kid who, for once, isn't smarter than all the adults. And a loyal dog. And an animal sidekick. And always that house and those balloons.

1UP: Directed by Kyle Newman. With Paris Berelc, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Ruby Rose, Hari Nef. Follows a gamer who quits her college esports team due to sexism from her male counterparts.
Equal parts low budget gamer movie and low budget girl power movie and low budget Revenge of the Nerds, there’s a pretty ok movie at the heart of “1UP”, though you’ll need to look past some pretty offensive performative tropes that are right up in your face.

1/10. Unbelievably inept, boring and annoying. brettdeath 10 July 2022. Going into this film I did not expect much. The reason I has so little-expectations for the film was primarily due to the 1.9 IMDb score which, I must admit, I know is probably (at least slightly) review-bombed.
What you will—and won't—find in this movie. Crass talk and trash talk about sex, masturbation. Strong language throughout. "A--holes," "s--t," va. Parents need to know that 1UP is a 2022 comedy in which a team of college-age misfits form an all-female esports team to take on the sexist boys' team at the school.

Up. Balloons, house, dog, boy, man: "Up." "Up" is a wonderful film, with characters who are as believable as any characters can be who spend much of their time floating above the rain forests of Venezuela. They have tempers, problems and obsessions. They are cute and goofy, but they aren't cute in the treacly way of little cartoon animals.

Besides these wokeisms, the humour itself is incredibly low-brow with little opportunity to create an underdog story that deep-down "1UP" is and should be, if not wholly dragged down by the aforementioned fundamentals. It's a movie that does seem to understand aspects of gaming culture but alienates the audience you'd think it is trying to attract.
