1st grade homework

I have one template per month and then change the date and wording each week!

Behind the weekly newsletter I send home different homework pages based on all sorts of factors. I like having options!!!! I made at least one page for each topic I teach throughout the year. Also, I have never been a fan of longgggg homework. I find that it is too overwhelming and I think students just need *quick* reinforcing practice each night so that played a big role in the way I set up my homework. You can see a little more about the homework pages below.

1st grade homework

Again, I like having options and I know most teachers do too! Based on the skills I’m teaching that week, a student’s ability level, parent involvement, I will send home what I believe to be a reasonable HW packet for the week. You can do the same for your students!

1st grade homework

^^ Again, it’s all up to YOU!^^

Maybe you don’t send home homework because in your community it doesn’t get sent back. Well, these quick check-ins can easily be made into morning work that only takes minutes to complete while students practice their skills.

If you think this type of first grade homework might be for you or you want to try and switch it up this year, go ahead and take a closer look at some of the pages in my unit by clicking the unit below and downloading the preview!

Gov. Kim Reynolds signs law to raise Iowa students' lagging literacy. The classroom impact:

A DEL — Gov. Kim Reynolds sat cross-legged, surrounded by first graders, on the floor of a classroom in Adel Elementary School, watching as the students practiced their vowel sounds.

Reynolds had just come from signing a new law aimed at improving how early literacy classes are taught in Iowa. In the classroom, she saw some of those teaching techniques in action.

First grade teacher Erin Koelker showed students letter combinations such as "igh," "ay" and "ore" and had kids call out the sounds the letters make. The students also used handheld whiteboards to write down all the sounds that each vowel can make.

In the lead-up to the 2020 election, all eyes are on Iowa. Get updates of all things Iowa politics delivered to your inbox.

Offered a whiteboard of her own, Reynolds declined.

"I'll just watch," she said.

Reynolds is hoping to see more lessons like this in elementary schools around Iowa in the coming years as House File 2618 is implemented. The law has new testing requirements intended to help aspiring Iowa teachers improve their literacy instruction and requires schools to provide personalized plans to elementary school students who are not reading at grade level.

"What was your favorite part?" Reynolds asked the students after the lesson as reporters, state lawmakers and members of the governor's staff looked on from the packed classroom.

"The giant cameras!" one boy said.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Reynolds praised the students.

"They knew the answers. They were engaged," she said. "So I think that’s part of it, too, keeping those kids focused on what they’re doing. And I was pretty impressed at how they raised their hands. They knew what they were doing. I was watching them write on the boards and almost every one of them that I could see had the right thing written down. So it was great."

Teaching based in the 'science of reading' aims to improve Iowa's literacy rates

Reynolds signed the bill Tuesday afternoon at the Adel DeSoto Minburn Community School District Administration Center.

The legislation is a pared-back version of a proposal Reynolds called for in her Condition of the State address in January, where she pointed out Iowa's reading rates.

"Reading proficiency by the third grade is a critical marker that, if not met, can put a child’s future at risk," Reynolds said. "Students who struggle to read are four times more likely to drop out of high school, which dramatically increases their chances of being arrested, using illegal drugs and really having poor health. In short, the stakes couldn’t be higher."

Iowa's test scores from the 2022-23 school year show just 66% of third graders in the state are proficient in English Language Arts, including literacy. Those numbers are far lower for students with disabilities and English language learners, each at 25%.

"Every child deserves to receive instruction and supports that empower them to be proficient readers by the end of third grade," Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow said. "This work, investing in the science of reading with teachers and families all across Iowa, truly changes lives."

The law requires students in Iowa's teacher-preparation programs to take the " Foundations of Reading " assessment developed by Massachusetts. The results would be reported to the Iowa Department of Education.

The curriculum is used by 13 states, according to  the assessment company website , which describes the assessment as "aligned with scientifically based reading research for early childhood education, elementary education, middle childhood education and special education teacher licensure candidates."

Unlike Reynolds' original proposal, the law does not require that students in the teacher prep programs pass the test or that it be used as a criteria for graduation. Reynolds said it will still provide valuable data.

"We do want our prep schools giving our teachers the tools they need to be successful. So this will start that process," she said. "They’ll test and it will be the aggregate and that will give them some idea if the methods that they’re using are working."

The Iowa Department of Education has been training teachers in a science of reading-based course called Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling, or LETRS. The goal is to train more than 6,000 teachers and 600 administrators, Reynolds said.

Science of reading uses research from the fields of education, linguistics, psychology and neuroscience to explain how people learn to read, according to the Iowa Department of Education. This research is used to help students learn to read and write.

The practice also influences teacher preparation programs and professional learning, and instructional materials schools choose.

ADM schools see reading scores improve after implementing new curriculum

Techniques grounded in the science of reading have helped the Adel DeSoto Minburn Community School improve its reading scores, said Travis Wilkins, executive director of Teaching and Learning and Communication.

In 2018-19, about 58% of ADM third grade students were proficient in English language arts. By the 2022-23 school year, the number rose to 81%. Among fourth grade students in 2018-19, 74% were proficient in English language arts, compared with almost 91% who were proficient last school year.

Wilkins said the district's preliminary results for 2023-24 show 90% of all students are now proficient. He praised the district's "phenomenal" teachers, who he said were able to get results once they had the tools to teach the new techniques.

"Our teachers have taken this on at all levels," he said. "We’ve asked our high school teachers to engage in this, not just our lowest grade levels, and the results speak for themselves."

New law requires personalized reading plans for students who aren't reading proficiently

The law requires schools to notify parents and guardians of children in kindergarten through sixth grade if their student is not reading proficiently at grade level.

The notice to parents must inform them that they can request that their student be held back at the current grade level if they are not reading proficiently. If parents ask for their child to repeat a grade, the school must honor the request.

Any students from kindergarten through sixth grade who are not reading at grade level will be given a personalized plan until their reading improves.

Samantha Hernandez contributed reporting.

US House passes controversial bill that expands definition of anti-Semitism

Rights groups warn that the definition could further chill freedom of speech as protests continue on college campuses.

Students and pro-Palestinian supporters occupy a plaza at the City College of New York campus

The United States House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed a bill that would expand the federal definition of anti-Semitism, despite opposition from civil liberties groups.

The bill passed the House on Wednesday by a margin of 320 to 91, and it is largely seen as a reaction to the ongoing antiwar protests unfolding on US university campuses. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.

The take: university protests spread across the us, at least 200 arrested at may day clashes in turkey, university gaza protests rage on with columbia arrests and violence at ucla.

If the bill were to become law, it would codify a definition of anti-Semitism created by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

That is a federal anti-discrimination law that bars discrimination based on shared ancestry, ethnic characteristics or national origin. Adding IHRA’s definition to the law would allow the federal Department of Education to restrict funding and other resources to campuses perceived as tolerating anti-Semitism.

But critics warn IHRA’s definition could be used to stifle campus protests against Israel’s war in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of 34,568 Palestinians so far.

What is the definition?

IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism is “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities”.

According to the IHRA, that definition also encompasses the “targeting of the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity”.

The group also includes certain examples in its definition to illustrate anti-Semitism. Saying, for instance, that “the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor” would be deemed anti-Semitic under its terms. The definition also bars any comparison between “contemporary Israeli policy” and “that of the Nazis”.

However, IHRA does specify that “criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as anti-Semitic”.

Bipartisan criticism

Rights groups, however, have raised concerns the definition nevertheless conflates criticism of the state of Israel and Zionism with anti-Semitism.

In a letter sent to lawmakers on Friday, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) urged House members to vote against the legislation, saying federal law already prohibits anti-Semitic discrimination and harassment.

The bill is “therefore not needed to protect against anti-Semitic discrimination”, the letter said.

“Instead, it would likely chill free speech of students on college campuses by incorrectly equating criticism of the Israeli government with anti-Semitism.”

Those fears were echoed within the House of Representatives itself. During a hearing on Tuesday, Representative Jerry Nadler, a Democrat, said the scope of the definition was too broad.

“By encompassing purely political speech about Israel into Title VI’s ambit, the bill sweeps too broadly,” he said.

Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican, also criticised the bill in a post on the social media platform X, noting that it only referred to the IHRA definition, without providing the exact language or stating clearly which parts would be enshrined into law.

“To find the legally adopted definition of anti-Semitism, one must go to [the IHRA website],” he wrote.

“Not only is the definition listed there, but one also finds specific examples of anti-Semitic speech. Are those examples made part of the law as well?”

Concerns on campus

The IHRA adopted its current definition of anti-Semitism in 2016, and its framing has been embraced by the US State Department under President Joe Biden and his two predecessors.

The vote on Wednesday comes as renewed protests have swept across college campuses in opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza. April has seen the spread of encampments on university lawns, as students call for university leaders to divest from Israel and for government officials to call for a ceasefire.

The Biden administration and other top Washington officials have pledged steadfast support for Israel, despite mounting humanitarian concerns over its military campaign.

US lawmakers also have upped the pressure on university administrators to quash the protests, which they have portrayed as inherently anti-Semitic.

Protest leaders across the country, however, have rejected that characterisation. Instead, they accuse administrators and local officials of conflating support for Palestinians with anti-Semitism.

They also have said their rights are being trampled by administrators who seek to appease lawmakers, prompting at times violent police crackdowns on the encampments.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that several House committees would be tasked with a probe into alleged campus anti-Semitism. But critics fear the investigation could ultimately threaten to withhold federal research grants and other government support from the universities where the protests are occurring.

Michigan’s Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is a state-funded pre-K program that serves at risk four-year-old children across the state. Utilizing longitudinal data from 1,394 children in a mid-sized urban school district, we conducted regression analyses and piecewise linear growth models to examine the growth trajectory of GSRP children and non-GSRP children at each grade level from kindergarten to third grade in both reading and math. The results of regression analyses showed that, after accounting for other variables, participation in GSRP was statistically significantly associated with higher scores on Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) measures at various time points, ranging from 0.22–0.46 standard deviations ( SD ) in math and 0.31–0.49 SD in reading. The results of piecewise linear growth models illustrated that GSRP children had a statistically significantly faster monthly growth rate than non-GSRP children during the kindergarten year. However, the growth rates were not significantly different during the first, second, and third grade.

It is important to note that these five cohorts of students were affected by COVID-19 to vary degrees. The 2017–18 and 2018–19 cohorts were not impacted by COVID-19. However, due to COVID-19, the Spring MAP tested was not conducted during the 2019–2020 school year when the 2019–20 cohort was in third grade, the 2020–21 cohort was in second grade, and the 2021–21 cohort was in first grade.

It would be more ideal to have Fall, Winter, and Spring achievement data for each grade, but these six measures are the only data available for us to use.

We lack information about the specific schools attended by students within the school district, rendering a three-level model with repeated measures nested within students nested within schools unfeasible. Additionally, the elementary schools within the district are few in number.

Gov. Reynolds signs bill to bolster childhood literacy

ADEL, Iowa (Gray Television Iowa Capitol Bureau) - Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new law Tuesday meant to boost literacy rates for Iowa children. It requires schools teach a specific reading method, called the Science of Reading , and develop individual plans for students not at grade level.

Last year, more than 30% of Iowa’s third and 11th graders weren’t reading at their grade level. Travis Wilkins with the Adel DeSoto Minburn Community School District said, “As an educator and in this profession, I think it’s important we recognize and name the fact that we are not meeting our mission.”

But ADM Schools found success. Three years ago it had one in four students not meeting reading standards. Then, it implemented a literacy strategy called the science of reading. “Our third grade through 11th grade scores now show 90% of our students are proficient in reading and writing,” Wilkins said.

Now, the Science of Reading is the law in Iowa. Tuesday Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill mandating schools implement the strategy and must provide personalized instruction for students who fall behind. “And for those who continue to struggle, the bill also ensures parents are informed of their right to request that their child be retained to repeat a grade level if that’s necessary,” Reynolds said.

DOCUMENT: HF 2618

Reynolds says the stakes of literacy are high. “Reading proficiency by the third grade is a critical marker that if not met can put a child’s future at risk. Students who struggle to read are four times more likely to drop out of high school, which dramatically increases their chances of being arrested, using illegal drugs and really having poor health,” Reynolds said.

After signing the bill, Reynolds stopped by a first grade class to see the science of reading in action. “I am really pumped up and excited about the potential that this is going to have on our young people so what a great model for us to scale,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds says 6000 educators will be trained on the Science of Reading.
