The union of two people is often a joyous occasion that celebrates love, families coming together, and visions of a prosperous future. Whether it involves walking down the aisle, breaking glass, standing beneath a mandap, jumping over a broom, or performing a tea ceremony, a wedding is a memorable event that marks a new beginning into the rest of your life. 

However, joy cannot be found in a ceremony that is based on crushing someone’s civil liberties. For some women, the idea of marriage does not inspire the image of white dresses and champagne toasts, it rather incites fear of decisions made upon their lives and their bodies that they have no liberty to argue against. 

Marriage practices and traditions that were designed decades, even centuries ago, that infringe upon women’s basic human rights are still being performed today. These practices limit women’s freedoms and create a significant hurdle on the track towards achieving gender equality. 

While there is always space to recognize and respect tradition, and to protect Indigenous cultures from being diluted by globalization, there should be no such space when these traditions are used to disempower women and girls. 

Although there have been moves towards ending these harmful practices, more needs to be done to make sure that girls do not have their futures decided for them by the threat of marriage and the cultural practices it may come with, and that women are provided the freedoms they deserve, whether or not they decide to marry. 

Here are some existing marriage customs that are harmful to the rights of women and girls. 

1. Bride Kidnapping

Abducting a woman with the intention to force them into marriage is a practice that continues in some regions around the world. It exists in East and Central Asia, as well as in some parts of Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa. Bride kidnapping infringes upon a woman's will to decide on her own future.

A country that is known globally for this practice is Kyrgyzstan , where the practice sees a woman abducted by a man’s friends in public and taken to his home, where she is convinced to marry him by his family members. The tradition, called “ala kachuu”, has been illegal since 1994 , however it is still practiced to this day. Looking at the tradition today, Kyrgyz women interviewed by the Conversation believe it to be a thing of the past, and partake in staging the kidnapping, to uphold tradition. However not all the ongoing abductions are staged, and as recently as 2018, two women lost their lives after opposing marriage following the abduction practice.

Marriage abduction also perpetuates gender-based violence, where in some cases, women and girls are raped in an attempt to coerce them to marry. This is reportedly not the norm in Kyrgyzstan , but in places like South Africa and Indonesia , the tradition sometimes involves violent action, and no space for negotiation. 

Both Indonesia and South Africa have been aiming to abolish the tradition, however it is still ongoing. Other nations where bride kidnapping exists include Italy, Kenya, Rwanda, and parts of Latin America. 

2. Child Marriage

There is no shortage of information out there on the harm that child marriage can cause to young girls and the society around them. It robs them of their childhood, denies them of a future chosen by them, limits their access to education, potentially exposes them to gender-based violence, and continues to fuel the fire of gender inequality. 

Some of the main reasons for child marriage include marrying out of poverty or to ensure financial security, severe regional gender inequality, and fulfilling social or ethnic norms. While the highest rates of child marriage can be found in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia , this practice is undertaken on almost every continent and in many regions globally. It is illegal in much of the world, but marriages still continue amid legal loopholes, for example in the UK , and issues in terms of actually policing laws.

3. Dowry Payments

Dowries are ingrained in some cultures and societies, and not all of them are harmful to women . A dowry in most cultures, such as those in sub-Saharan Africa, is a symbol of unity, and respect for the family that it is being paid to. They are not always financial payments, and are also not always seen as paying a price for marrying a woman in certain cultures. They can include symbolic contributions to the family as a sign of gratitude for their acceptance.

However, it is not a straightforward custom, and dowry payments in some communities have resulted in women facing harm. In India, where a dowry of money or other goods is paid by parents to the groom’s family to ensure their daughter has financial security in her marriage, dowries have resulted in gender-based violence, and even death. In 2019, dowries resulted in the deaths of over 3,500 women in the country , and the courts see thousands of dowry-related harassment or gender-based violence cases every year. 

According to CNN , dowry-related woman abuse in the country is often caused by dissatisfaction over the amount of dowry received, as it has become more of a condition of marriage, rather than a gift. Women are known to commit suicide, driven by the pressure of not being able to keep up with dowry payments, or they face violence within their marriage, or are murdered for the same reason. 

While India has banned the tradition, not enough has yet been done to protect women and their families from the pressures of the dowry system. 

Millions of girls around the world experience female genital mutilation (FGM) as a prerequisite to marriage or as a means to control a woman’s sexuality before marriage. This is an infringement on a woman’s right to her bodily autonomy, and as it is often performed on school-aged girls, also stops them from being able to access education and deprives them of their childhood, as well as causing both short- and long-term health consequences.  

Often FGM is interlinked with child marriage , as the custom is practiced while girls are still young so that they can be viewed to society as suitable to marry. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in some communities where women are financially dependent on men, FGM is a requirement ahead of marriage and is practiced to better the chances of inheritance and financial stability. 

Today the practice is ongoing all over the world , and occurs legally and illegally in some African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and Southern American countries. It is also present in western countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US, the UK, and parts of Europe among immigrant or diaspora populations that have continued the tradition.

At the mandap, a progression of custom is performed in a steady progression. Before long, the ministers begin performing puja (love). According to the bearings, the couple takes their wedding pledges. The lady of the hour and prepare tied by a white material called lagangantho before they take rounds of the blessed fire seven times.

Nepali Marriage Rituals, Customs, and System

After the girl has been identified, then the wedding plan begins.

Generally, wedding in Nepal has three parts. They are:

• Pre-marriage ceremony
• Marriage ceremony
• Post marriage ceremony

1. Pre-marriage ceremony

In this ceremony, the groom with his family (Especially Father and Mother) goes to the bride’s family and asked for their daughter’s hand. In this occasion, they talk about their son and daughter respectively related to their educations, occupations, and habits.

It was the time when if the family agreed, then the marriage was confirmed. But nowadays, after the family approval, the groom and the bride meet each other and have some talks and understanding about them. After both of them agreed, the next step begins. This is called Shubhasahit in Nepal. That means to decide the auspicious date or fixing the date.

1.1. Shubhasahit

In ShubhaSahit, Groom and bride family arrange a priest and meet at the bridge house to decide the kurachhinne (engagement day) and marriage day. The priest looks both the kundalini of groom and bride, checks their gotras, compares the matching and looks for any ancestral lineages. After matching the kundalini, the priest decides the engagement day and the wedding day.

1.2 Kura chine din (Engagement day)

In engagement day, groom with his family and the relatives visit the bride house with a gun (special gifts usually given in marriage ceremony from the groom family to bride family). The bride family accepts the Sagun as the approval of the marriage and welcome the groom family. On this event, the groom and bride offer a ring to each other. Then, the tikatalo program begins where both the family members put tikas and congratulate them.

2. Marriage ceremony

On this wedding day, the bride’s family perform some puja honoring and worshipping the ancestors. This is also meant for making all the planets peace so that the wedding will be peaceful and blissful. (Note: this event is also performed before the wedding day).

Then, the janti will get ready. It is also called barati where the friends, relatives and the close one of groom gathered and do some cheerful noise followed by the musical bands. The groom with a traditional dress is carted through a well-decorated car or horse-drawn carriage and proceed to the bride house.

When the groom with jantis dancing with the musical band all along the way reaches the bride house, they are welcomed by the bride’s family. After that, a series of religious and cultural rituals take place the whole day.

2.1. Swayambhar

This is the event when the bride with water in omkhara circles the groom thrice letting the water flow. The priest chants mantra where the groom and bride offer floral garlands and rings to each other.

2.2 VivahMandap

This is one of the special functions of the wedding where most of the rituals are performed according to Hindu. VivahMandap is the well-decorated canopy where a sacred fire is lit in the middle. The priest chants mantras in Sanskrit and the couple as per directions take their wedding vows.

Then, after groom puts sindur (a red vermilion powder) on the bride’s forehead, the lagangatho ceremony takes place where the couple is tied with a white cloth before they take seven round of the sacred fire. Sindur is the symbol of married women in Nepal. Here, Groom also ties a gold necklace called tilhari. Then, it is followed by the Kanyadan ceremony.

2.3. Kanyadan

In this ceremony, Bride’s family especially father wash the bride’s and groom’s feet with water with a copper bowl. This is also called godhadhuwa ceremony. This is the signification of giving a daughter. At this stage, the groom’s father assures to take care of his daughter and promise to love her as her daughter.

3. Post marriage ceremony

This ceremony is also called Anmaaune or Bidai ceremony after the bride’s offer wedding party. This is a farewell full of emotion and feeling of love.

The groom’s side then returns to home with Jantis dancing with the musical band. At the entrance of the groom’s house, they are welcomed by the groom’s family. Generally, the sister of the groom do some Aarti( aarati means a fire from camphor or oil revolving around with hands) and puts Tika on their forehead. This is generally done to keep away all the evil spirits.

After that, the bride takes steps upon the mold of rice over the burning lamp which is arranged in a line while entering the house. This is the significance of entering the Goddess Laxmi in the home.

Then, all the family members welcome the new bride and introduction program starts. The whole night is celebrated with parties, dance, singing, and other fun related activities. Then, the groom and bride come home and rest in their room because it is the time to leave them alone.

After a couple of days, the new couple has to return to the bride’s house which we called DulhanFarkauney to express harmony, love, and gratitude to the newly established relation. There is also Samdhibhetkaryakam.

In this way, Marriage is conducted with a positive message, love, respect, and gratitude.

But another society, a Newari community, some of the ritual is different than above described.

How to Write About Marriage? Learn How to Write the Personal Essay

I TEACH ONLINE MEMOIR CLASSES and work as a memoir coach and memoir editor, and in those roles I get a lot of requests for teaching how to write the personal essay. The essay is my favorite medium and most of the essays I have written and published take on simple, domestic issues stemming from marriage and family. The key to writing from home is to stay small. You are most likely to succeed in delivering a feeling to the reader if you attempt to do so without telling us what that feeling is. Navigating this space of showing, not telling, is critical to the success of a good, domestic essay.

What do I mean by that? Just this: Let the reader do some of the work. Let them do the math. Let them read it and gather together the details without you having to say something like: Hey, look at how someone loves me . Just show us. How? Here’s an example.

Read this essay and leave in the comments what you notice about what does and does not get said, and what you feel at the end.

I HAVE THREE FREEZERS. There, I admit it. I do. A born and raised New Yorker, maybe I have nothing more or less than a shtetl mentality, some genetic holdover from a time when there was never plenty. But probably not, since the closest I’ve come to Anatevka was fourth row center seats for “Fiddler on the Roof” when I was twelve.

And so it remains one of the greater mysteries of my marriage – to my husband, that is – that I buy chickens and freeze them, make stock and freeze it, make pesto and freeze it, and that every once in a while in the blur that I am as I whirl between the three freezers, I put something into one of them that, well, simply doesn’t belong.

It’s good he doesn’t take it personally, though that is probably because I have assured him that this started long before our marriage, and that I once located a sumptuous pair of alligator loafers in the fridge after thinking for months that I had lost them. They were in a brown paper bag, exactly the size of a pizza slice, so it seems obvious to me what my mind did when I got home from the shoe repair. Into the fridge, I thought, and that, as they say, was that. So glad was I when I found them that there were no recriminations. Plus, at the time I lived alone, so I had no one with whom the share the joy of finding them. Cold, though they were, I merely slipped them on and instantly regained my sense of balance.

These days, I have an audience, as well as several mouths to feed. Along with providing food for the adults in my home, I also cook for our dog. He has allergies. Seven years we’ve been at it. The cost of this is 14 sweet potatoes and 14 chicken thighs each week, and so an enormous canvas bag of sweet potatoes sits on top of the chest freezer in the garage (did I forget to mention that of the three freezers, one is the chest variety?) It’s the kind of bag that ship riggers use. Strong handled and sturdy, we need it for when the price is low – a recent 99 cents/pound, for instance – and we buy in bulk. It’s hard to lose.

Or so you might think.

Saturday was a cooking day for me, and so I am writing in real time here, reporting from the front. The last of the parsnips, all of the frozen vegetable scrapings, cilantro stems and other tidbits from the freezer went into the cauldron-sized stock pot. Back and forth from the freezers I went, finding tempting stashes of things to add.

“Oh look,” I said to the dog, “Chives!” The dog gave me the look he always gives me. It’s lovely to be adored no matter what you do.

My chives are now up in my kitchen garden, so clearly the frozen ones had to go into the soup. And in they went. And more things came to mind, and apparently I was wearing one of my many pair of glasses and carrying a mug of tea while I triangulated my way between my freezers. And then the washing machine sang its little song it sings when the load is done and the triangulation became a parallelogram and I added an upstairs trip.

The soup was creating that kind of happy haze it does when the aroma has taken over the house, and everything seemed right with the world. Out to the freezer I went again when I noticed the mega bag of potatoes was gone. Missing. Thinking it might help if I could see better, I patted myself down for my eyeglasses. Gone too. And what about that tea? Wasn’t I drinking something just moments ago?

Opening the stand freezer I was delighted to find the full bag of potatoes quietly cooling inside. Not that alarming, really. Many remarkable things have been unearthed there, including a portable phone and a book. It happens. And being a good wife, I called to my husband.

“Look, honey!” He came in from the kitchen, and that look on his face was the dividend check, the little extra I get from years of investing in this life.

The glasses? They were in the laundry hamper. Obviously. But it was my husband who found the tea mug, hours later, in that grand sweep I now realize he quietly does every day and last thing on most nights, simply putting everything back in its place so we can get on with our lives.

Most of my essays come from domestic moments. Before I set out to write from my idea of home, I read extensively. Specifically, when learning how to write about marriage, domesticity or cooking, I can credit the great Laurie Colwin, Russell Baker and Nora Ephron for some great provocation. I read and I learned how to write the personal essay.

Marion – I laughed out loud as I read this. In our house, we take turns finding what the other has lost as we wander through our home and our lives. I still recall the day that my cell phone rang just as I pulled into work. It was my love, speaking in that confused, amazed, indignant, frustrated tone that signals the loss of something crucial. In this case it was his glasses, his last pair. He couldn’t drive without them. He was late for work. He could no longer think clearly about where to look. “Would you like me to come home?” I asked. “Would you?” he said. And twenty minutes later there we were, retracing his steps. “Did you check the laundry closet?” I asked. “I wouldn’t have put them there!” he said. Which of course spoke volumes. I went in, opened the washing machine and there they were at the bottom of the drum, the lenses staring up at me. I didn’t crow or chortle or get too mad. By then I’d learned what we both know all too well, that it is only a matter of time before I’ve lost my keys, again, in my purse.

Now I was waiting to hear that at least one of those freezers had a stock of Creme de la Mer–just in case, or your favorite red lipstick–also just in case. That I would understand, or for storing cashmere crew necks, which I understand store best in freezing cold storage. Chickens? Chives? Lordy–the things I learn about you.

Marion, I’m guessing you can hear my laughing all the way from Portland, OR to the east coast! Such a funny story you’ve shared, and one which many of us can relate to in one way or another. I don’t have a chest freezer, and I only have one freezer other than the one with the fridge. But I do manage to lose things in that tall freezer residing in a garage that is really my husband’s workshop and not a garage at all. I’m wondering now if that’s where he’s lost all those books of blank checks he was looking for and perhaps it’s where I might find the springtime blouse I can’t find now that it’s spring. I’ll go look!

The cilantro stem, the dividend check (just beautiful – a ROI), something about the sturdy bag reminded me of my grandmother’s cool damp cellar. I had to read the essay twice to know why the last sentence struck me – the grand sweep, but it was your words “that I now realize” he does…I do the grand sweep of our night stands every morning. It is part of my morning rhythm after he leaves for work. And moreso, I pick up clues – an empty ice cream bowl tells me he stayed up later than me and will have a story to tell about an episode or a news piece, business cards tell me he’s mowing today, the gold PO Box key – he’ll be calling for it any minute. As I do the sweep each morning, I think of him and wonder if he knows how it happens. I suppose I’m waiting for that ROI!

Oh, I relate to misplacing items – sometimes not finding them for years. This morning I happily found, from a pile I’d pulled out behind my desk, a hard copy of your recommended memoir books, which I wanted as I research my first memoir essay (after working on book-length projects). It’s about my years as a homeschooling stay-at-home mum, my failings and asking forgiveness of my two beautiful children, now rewarded with their amazing love in hard times.

Here’s what I heard in your essay: You’re a born and raised New Yorker, genetically but distantly Jewish. You love to keep food frozen and at the ready in your three freezers, which include a chest freezer on which you keep a canvas bag of sweet potatoes for the dog.

On Saturday, while whirling around creating a cauldron-sized soup–with parsnips, vegetable scraps, cilantro stems, chives and other tidbits–and carrying a mug of tea, you had to attend to your clothes washing.

Once the soup was on, creating a happy haze of aroma through the house, you noticed the sweet potatoes were missing, as well as the glasses you’d been wearing and your tea. You found the sweet potatoes in a standing freezer. Showing this to your husband, he rewarded you with a look, a paycheck for all the years you’ve invested in his life. The glasses turned up in the laundry hamper but your tea mug wasn’t found for hours, and then by your husband.

What you did not say in the essay: Apart from your preamble about the art of memoir which should show rather than say, Hey Look at how someone loves me, you don’t actually say your husband loves you or that you love him and the home you’ve created. But these facts well up through the peace you describe at home, despite the chaos sometimes caused by misplacing items. There you have an audience of an adoring dog and a husband who not only shares your joy of finding things in unusual places but who balances your tendency to leave such things out of place with his quiet nightly routine.

When you lived alone, it took longer to regain your sense of balance after misplacing your loafers than these days when your husband quietly ‘sweeps’ through the house at night to find misplaced items.

How I feel after this review is grateful for the peace you feel and share when New York is in chaos with so many affected by coronavirus. However, this was not a clear feeling on my first read.

As an Australian, I often feel at a loss to fully translate others’ communicated lifestyles into exactly what is meant, as I did when I first read this essay. Using maps and looking up word definitions helps (eg. shtelt). For example, I love listening to your inspiring podcasts, yet I often feel I lose a lot of rich context, especially when interviewed authors are from your area and you have shared history, far from my western Sydney townhouse. I’ve not been to New York, though I’ve stayed with friends and family living in Minnesota and California. These days I travel in books and online as I learn to live with low-grade lymphoma that limits even local travel.

The requirement for those who bring or receive engagement gifts is that they haven’t married. These people are often the bride’s and groom’s relatives or friends.

On the engagement day, the fiancé’s family will bring their gift to the fiancée’s family. After that, the couple will pray in front of the fiancée’s family altar to ask for approval from the ancestors. After that, the fiancé can give his fiancée the engagement ring with cheers from both families. On this occasion, the bride and sometimes even the groom will wear ao dai , the traditional Vietnamese dress.

Wedding Reception (Dam Cuoi)

The date of the wedding, and also that of the engagement, is chosen carefully and usually decided by a Buddhist monk or a fortune teller. Before the wedding, the groom’s family will return to the bride’s home with betel and areca as a gift, officially asking to receive the bride. The bride’s family will confirm the wedding and other proceedings one last time.

On the wedding day, the groom’s family and some of their close friends will come and receive the bride at her house. After a formal tea and candle ceremony and some speeches, the couple will turn to their parents, receive their advice, and bow to them. The groom’s mother will give the bride jewelry for good fortune.

The wedding reception will occur at the groom’s house or a restaurant. Some weddings in the countryside often last for 2 to 3 days with many guests. Before the main ceremony, the couple will stand by the door, welcome the guests, and take pictures. As the couple walks onto the stage, the ceremony will start with the announcement of the host, followed by many cheers from guests.
