How Rema Became Afrobeats’ New Superhero

By Charles Holmes

Charles Holmes

what is the biography of rema

Rema grew up in a family of six in Benin City, the capital of Nigeria’s Edo state. “It’s an ancient city,” he says. “It’s still deep in culture, very deep, traditional.” At its founding centuries ago, he says, “Nigeria was not a country, but we had a kingdom. We had a movement.”

He returned to Benin City a changed man, drawing on the secular influences he’d absorbed during his year in Ghana:  “When I took that break I saw life — like, real life.” The day after his “Gucci Gang” freestyle, he received a call from D’Prince, who invited him to Lagos, Nigeria, and offered him a record deal. Rema moved there the next day. “I was like, ‘This is my only chance,’” he says. “I had to prove myself.  At that time, I had no Afrobeats songs — strictly hip-hop, strictly trap. D’Prince started pitching some Afrobeats to me, and I started vibing.”

Even as his career keeps growing — his biggest hit, the bubbly, melodic “Dumebi,” has more than 20 million streams on Spotify — Rema is still adjusting to his newfound fame and wealth. “I still do my best to try and stay away from people,” Rema says. “I can’t just walk in and say hi to everybody. It’s not because I’m proud. It’s because I’m shy. I have a lot inside me, but sometimes I can’t actually speak.”

Who Is Rema? Exploring The Young Musician’s Biography And Rise To Fame

Ogechukwu Nwabugo

Rema (Real Name: Divine Ikubor, born 1 May 2000) is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and rapper who gained international fame with his song “Iron Man”.

Rema has proven that it’s possible to bring the good life which most people only get to live in their forties to one’s teens. The young artist is currently dominating the music scene and driving the conversation, hitting millions of streams, and reinvigorating Afrobeats with his music. He is currently cruising through the industry, both locally and internationally and there is seemingly nothing to hold back since then. But how did he get to where he is today? We’ll be taking an in-depth look into the artist’s success story, as well as everybody and everything that contributed to making him what he is today.

Summary Of Rema’s Biography and Profile

Full name: Divine Ikubor Nickname: Rema Date of birth: 1st May 2000 Zodiac sign: Taurus Nationality: Nigerian Ethnicity: African Religion: Christianity Occupation: Singer/Rapper/Songwriter Net Worth: $1 Million

Rema Was Born And Raised In Benin

Famously called the future of Afrobeat, the singer who burst onto the scene in 2018 was born on 1 May 2000. Although very little is known about his background, we know he hails from Benin kingdom of Edo state, Nigeria. It was there he completed his primary and secondary school for his first school leaving certificate and WAEC respectively.

Rema didn’t have it all as a child but he definitely didn’t rise from the rags. His dad was a judge and supported his family substantially. As a child, he occupied himself with performing in church and street programs, little did he know that not before long that he’ll be performing on the biggest stages in the country and beyond. However, things changed for the lad when his dad and brother died just a few years before he hit the big stage. His mom and sister became his solace besides music.

He Chose Music Over School

As Rema dealt with the death of his dad and brother he focused on building his musical career. On this note, he isn’t known to be a graduate of any Nigerian university and hasn’t been associated with education since he finished his secondary school education. He once revealed on his Instagram page in a post that he later deleted that he was supposed to be in school but he chose music. This had his fans consoling him that school could be achieved at any age. Well, indeed, it’s never too late to start school. Besides, Rema is still very young and has plenty of time to get back to school.

His First Music Breakthrough Came In 2018

View this post on Instagram A post shared by REMA (@heisrema)

Rema spent more than three years making low-budget music productions but nobody cared about his work. This continued until 2018 when he first caught the attention of Jonzing world record boss, D’Prince who happens to be big in the Nigeria music industry. This was when he did an explosive freestyle of D’Prince’s Gucci Gang, and the social media post went viral. D’Prince flew Rema into Lagos and in 2019 he was offered a life-changing record deal with Mavin Records. Mavin Records had popular acts such as Korede Bello , Dija , Dr. Sid, Poe, Jonny Drille, D’Prince, and Tiwa Savage (who would later leave the label)

In 2019, Rema Released A Hit That Placed Him On The Spotlight

When it became obvious that young Rema was here to stay was after the release of his single “Iron man”. The song after breaking the local scenes back in 2019 went international as well, it appeared in the USA’s 2019 summer Playlist, and from this point, it was just uphill for the young star.

He supported that massive hit with the release of his first EP that same year, and songs like “Dumebi” and “Corny” were on it. In fact, anybody who is a fan of Nigerian music knows how big these songs are. The EP went on to be number 1 on apple music, Nigeria with all the songs in the top 10 chart in 6 days on apple music.

The same year, he released several other EPs including “Rema Freestyle” (2019), and “Bad Commando” (2019). He also dropped many single hits that became club staples including “Rewind,” “Lady,” and “Trap Out The Submarine.” In 2020, he released his EP; “Rema Remix” which came with many single hits such as;

  • “Dumebi Remix” (featuring Becky G)
  • “Beamer” (Bad Boys)
  • “Rainbo”
  • “Fame”
  • “Ginger Me”
  • “Alien”
  • “Woman”

His Popular Songs Include;

  • “Iron Man”
  • “Beamer”  (made FIFA 21 and won him a spot for a special performance on Ist of October 2020 as part of the FIFA 21 world Premiere)
  • “Dumebi
  • “Lady”
  • “Corny”
  • “American love”
  • “Bad Commando”
  • “Bounce”

Does Rema Have A Twin?

Rema has managed to keep his immediate family away from the press. His mom and his sister are the only members of his family that the media has gotten wind of at this time. As stated earlier, he lost his dad who was a judge, and his elder brother in quick succession back in 2017. There was a very brief scandal late last year when he accused the PDP of having a hand in his father’s death through a social media post but since no legal actions followed, it just fizzled out within a short period of time.

Circling back to the issue of whether he has a twin, we know for a fact that he has a sister but she isn’t his twin, she is in fact two years older than the young star. Her name is Ani Ikubor and she is an undergraduate at the University of Benin. The media started following her after she wished her kid bro a happy birthday, and enumerated how blessed their family was to have him.

what is the biography of rema

Talks of him having a twin sister only started flying around after a picture of a young lady identified as Remitta that looked exactly like Rema had circulated on the internet. Sadly, her real name or social media handle wasn’t made available to the public, maybe for security reasons. The two supposed “identical twins” later met up, took a couple of pictures, cleared the air on their different origins, and hopefully remained friends up till this day. Apart from that incident, there is no evidence or indication that Rema has a twin.

Rema really lives the message of his hit song 'Calm Down'

NPR's A Martinez talks to Nigerian sensation Rema about the global success of his song "Calm Down," and the rise of the music genre Afrobeats.

A MARTÍNEZ, HOST:

Something very cool is happening on the pop charts these days. There's been an influx of African artists blending the music of Nigeria and Ghana with Western R&B, hip-hop and jazz. It's called Afrobeats.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "PERU")

FIREBOY DML: (Singing) I just flew in from Miami. Peru para. Peru para.

MARTÍNEZ: This is Fireboy DML. His song "Peru" went to No. 2 in the U.K. when Ed Sheeran added his vocals to a remix.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "LOVE NWANTITI")

CKAY: (Singing in non-English language).

MARTÍNEZ: This one's by CKay. He's blending English and the Nigerian language Igbo on his song "Love Nwantiti." It was a hit in the U.K., the U.S. and Canada. There are so many other Afrobeats artists, too, but right now the biggest one in the U.S. is Rema.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "CALM DOWN")

REMA: (Singing) Another banger. Baby, calm down, calm down. Girl, this your body e put in my heart for lockdown, for lockdown, oh lockdown. Girl, you sweet like Fanta.

MARTÍNEZ: This is Rema's song "Calm Down." It's been a massive hit. It's the No. 5 song in the U.S. right now. And when I asked Rema about the rise of Afrobeats, I learned that he really lives the message of "Calm Down" because he is a very calm guy.

REMA: It's beyond the sound. It's a movement as well, and it's a movement of the youths.

MARTÍNEZ: He spoke in that low, quiet voice throughout our entire interview. Rema released "Calm Down" more than a year ago, but it didn't blow up in the States until pop singer Selena Gomez joined him for a remixed version.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "CALM DOWN (REMIX)")

SELENA GOMEZ: (Singing) Baby, show me you can calm down, calm down. Dance with me, and take the lead now, lead now.

REMA: I've done a lot of remixes that has never come out. But this one, when I heard it, I was like, yeah, this is it. I feel like it's going to touch the world differently.

MARTÍNEZ: And it definitely has. The hashtag #RemaCalmDown has more than 117 million views on TikTok. The remix has been streamed more than 900 million times on Spotify. Tomorrow, Rema is playing the iconic Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, and he says "Calm Down" even shows up in some unlikely places.

REMA: I've been in shows where people have it tattooed on their body...

MARTÍNEZ: Oh, really? Wow.

REMA: ...Just as a reminder, when life gets pressure, and they just look at the tattoo, and it just reminds them to calm down, not take things too deep.

MARTÍNEZ: Rema's real name is Divine Ikubor. He got his start in music at 17 years old after an Instagram video of him rapping to D'Prince's "Gucci Gang" went viral.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

REMA: (Rapping) And I thank God every day because he hold my hand. Oh, yeah. Gucci gang. Gucci gang. Gucci gang. And I come into the party with a bullet, man. Ninety people looking at me. They're like, who the man?

MARTÍNEZ: For Rema, signing his first record deal meant helping his family. Both his father and his older brother died, and Rema felt a responsibility to provide for the family that remained.

REMA: I didn't get in the game on some happy-to-be-here [expletive]. I'm meant to be here. I was chosen for it.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "DUMEBI")

REMA: (Singing in non-English language).

MARTÍNEZ: His first hit "Dumebi" put him on the map in Nigeria. "Calm Down" has now made him a worldwide sensation. Rema believes the success of fellow Afrobeats artists will only continue to grow.

REMA: We're just asking for the world's attention, you know, 'cause we have much to give.

Rema brings the heat

By Maybelle Morgan

Rema

Fans have Christopher Nolan to thank for much of Rema’s new music. “I took a lot of inspo from Oppenheimer ,” Rema says, wincing, his hair at the mercy of two stylists in an east London studio. “For years, I’ve been looking from the point of view of the bomb maker and not from the bomb itself. Now I’m tapping into the fire, the madness, the rage. And I know that since I came into the industry, I’ve sparked something, right?”

To say Rema has sparked something would be an understatement. “Calm Down”, his hit with Selena Gomez, felt like it was on repeat on dance floors all summer; this year it helped the 23-year-old Nigerian become the first African artist to hit a billion streams for a song on Spotify. (The video also earned Rema and Gomez the first-ever Afrobeats awards at the VMAs.) In July, Rema was also announced as the first African artist to become a year-long ambassador for Nike and Air Jordan, which “hits different,” he says “because Jordan’s number is 23, so signing a Jordan deal at 23 slaps.” In September, the 22-track deluxe version of his debut album Rave & Roses Ultra became the most streamed African record of all time.

“I haven’t taken any breaks. I haven’t had my foot off the pedal and I’ve been going for years, back to back,” says Rema. (His real name is Divine Ikubor.) He puts his huge year down to his work ethic, but also to faith. He tugs back the neck of his suit, gesturing. “I have a cross on my chest, I have two crosses on the side of my neck,” he says. “I believe in a higher power. I believe that I’m anointed with so much inspiration from God. There are no interviews that I’ve done where I haven’t spoken about the goodness of God and his grace in my life. It’s undeniable.”

Also undeniable: his preternatural ability to craft monstrous hits. Tracks like “Soundgasm”, “Charm” and “Iron Man” (the latter made Barack Obama’s summer 2019 playlist) show the range of Rema’s sprawling influences. His eclectic brand of Afrobeats is infused with trap, electronica , dancehall and jazz. Then there are the lyrics. Rema is an inimitable storyteller, whether crafting metaphors about love and sex (“you the reggae to my blues, baby / You be my booze, baby,” he sings on “Mara”) or condemning political oppression (“Gunshot no let me meditate… People they die / Police sef they go deny the case,” he says on “Peace Of Mind”). Nobody sounds quite like him, either. In one breath, Rema will morph his oddly satisfying nasal falsetto into gamaka trills, a signature Bollywood inflection. “I was criticised so many times. And I kept doing it, doing it, doing it – and now it’s just the norm.”

Rema harnessed this early negativity around his sound to coin his own sub-genre, Afro Rave, which now has its own league of fans, AKA “Ravers”. “Afro Rave has the energy that Afrobeats is missing,” Rema says. “Some artists that even came before me are now more flexible with melody, intonation and weird speech manner, because it’s more widely accepted when someone has already done it.”

Rema was born in Benin City, Nigeria, and started out playing in churches, writing raps and performing covers of songs in school at a young age. When he was eight, he lost his father, a politician, in mysterious circumstances; just seven years later, his oldest brother passed away, sinking the family into dire financial difficulties. Rema’s motivations for making music changed. He began taking part in competitions, as well as performing in bars and at political rallies, in efforts to help his mother pay the bills. In 2018, he was discovered and offered a record deal by Nigerian artist D’Prince, after an Instagram video of him freestyling over D’Prince’s “Gucci Gang” went viral. He moved to Lagos soon afterwards, and has been on the move ever since. This year alone, he has played close to 20 European countries and more than 10 US states. “I’ve paid my dues,” he says. “I’m willing to go that length, you know, because I have people to feed.”

It wasn’t always this way. Rema remembers just two or three years ago, having flown all the way from Nigeria for an Afrobeats showcase in New York, being rushed off the stage by the promoter after only four minutes, despite having been promised an hour-long set. Understandably gutted, he didn’t let it break his resolve. “I thought to myself, I’m gonna come back,” he says. He appeared at the very same 6,000-capacity venue again this year, selling it out. “When it’s your time, it’s your time. Don’t look down on nobody.”

Any such slights have since been dwarfed by the size of Rema’s achievements. In November, he closed out the year by performing at London’s O2 arena, his biggest show to date. He is working on an as-yet-unnamed fourth EP, which he says is “more cinematic” and “raw” than his previous work, with inspiration taken from both Nolan’s films and anime series Bleach and Death Note .

And he is planning more collaborations, having worked with Selena Gomez and AJ Tracey and seen the impact of harnessing international artists’ star power to expand the reach of Afro Rave to new audiences. “Lana Del Rey is someone I really want to work with,” says Rema. “Me and Travis Scott, it’s in the works, and me and Don Toliver are coming up with something.” (He also has his sights set on Bad Bunny and Rosalía , he tells me.)

Of course, going from being kicked off stage to headlining the 20,000-capacity O2 arena in such a short space of time has left its mark. “I’ve had years of crazy insomnia, where I barely sleep and my mind is racing,” he says. “I understand why a lot of OGs slowly zone out and delete their social media.” He’s grateful to be close with his family and friends, “who help give that balance”. They are also the ones who make sure he actually pauses every so often to smell the flowers. “Sometimes, people have to remind me about the things that I’ve done,” says Rema. “Like, ‘You’ve been No 1 on the radio for six months.’ That’s when I’m like, Wow.” Even now, his priority is being a provider for his loved ones and caring for his family. “Love is a huge part of my life.”

But there’s also the expansion of his musical agenda: Afro Rave, the movement. “I feel like I’m chosen,” he says. “It’s the energy that I want to teach, it’s the sound that I want to unlock in people’s ears.” That’s why he can’t slow down; it’s why he’s happy to be signing sportswear deals while thrashing out a fourth album, before the last one has even settled down. “There’s still so much to do.”

And the stretch goal, the overarching dream at the end of it all? Rema’s lips curl into a smile.

“That everyone around me is going to be super, super rich.”

During his school years, Rema became renowned for his captivating trap-rap freestyle performances, entertaining his classmates and showcasing his exceptional talent. Rema’s dedication to his craft and ability to connect with his audience personally set him apart as an artist with tremendous potential.

Unfortunately, Rema’s pursuit of a degree in Creative Arts at the University of Lagos was met with unforeseen challenges. The education system in Nigeria was plagued by prolonged strikes, causing significant disruptions to academic schedules and creating an environment of uncertainty.

Faced with the frustrating and prolonged strikes, Rema had to make a difficult decision. Rema Biography: Early life

Divine Ikubor, popularly called Rema, was born on 1st May 2000 to a Christian family living in Benin City, Edo State where he also grew up. He attended both primary and secondary schools in Benin City, obtaining both his First School Leaving Certificate and his West African Senior School Certificate.

rema was born in Benin City

Rema lost his dad and elder brother when he was 10 years old, as revealed in a chat with The Native Mag . He was subsequently brought up by his mother only.

During those early years of development, Rema had always had a passion for the stage. His Christian upbringing meant that the first place he explored his talent was at the church. Before becoming widely known, Divine Ikubor usually performed gospel songs at Christian gatherings, thrilling people in his locality to his superb sounds and voice.

In 2017 at the age of 17, Rema was alleged to have bought his mother a Lexus SUV, which cost 3.4 million naira. Rumour went round that Rema was a Yahoo boy before making it in music.

Rema is also a skilful piano player and had created his own live band back home in Benin City and would sometimes do the cover of other artists’ songs. It was during one of such performances that D’Prince found him. He then had to move from Benin to Lagos, a whole new experience for him. Rema said he was received kindly, telling Okay Africa:

“The love and support, which includes the people that come out to support me in shows, club gigs, etc. The people here who support my sound, stream and buy my music. The love I get in the streets, people cheering my name and appreciating my presence. It’s amazing.”

Rema Biography: Discovery and signing for Jonzing World

Charles Enebeli, who later signed Rema to his record label, Jonzing World, claimed to have been immediately captivated by the youngster. At the time, Ikubor was 18 and had jumped on D’Prince’s Gucci Gang Challenge on Instagram. This was how the D’Prince got to know about him.

According to D’Prince,  “when I first heard Rema’s work I knew this was an artist I wanted the entire world to listen to. His artistry and talent are so far beyond his years. By collaborating with Mavin Global, Jonzing World will be able to discover and develop not just Rema but many more exceptional talents like him. This is only the beginning.”

In 2018, the artist reached an agreement with Jonzing World record label and was officially signed. It was officially announced by Mavin Global in 2019. In May 2019, Don Jazzy revealed in a Loose Talk podcast that D’Prince had to travel to Benin City to meet with Rema’s mother.

Speaking about his signing, Ikubor himself says:

“It still feels like a dream. It is such a blessing for me to be chosen for something great, and given a platform as big as Mavin Global and team as supportive as Jonzing World to enable me [to] achieve my career objectives in music. I am super excited about what the future holds.”

Rema Biography: Music career

Despite having been a singer all his life while living in Edo State, Rema’s music career officially kicked off after he joined Jonzing World Records in 2018. The record label is the first imprint label of  Mavin Records, run by Don Jazzy whose real name is Micheal Collins Ajereh.

According to D’Prince, his mission was to discover young talented artistes like Divine Ikubor and to bring them into the limelight. Rema was the first artiste that was signed under the Mavin Global subsidiary, Jonzing World. D’Prince, by the way, is a biological brother of Don Jazzy.

At the time, Rema tells the Guardian: “ It still feels like a dream. It is such a blessing for me to be chosen for something great, and given a platform as big as Mavin Global and team as supportive as Jonzing World to enable me to achieve my career objectives in music. I am super excited about what the future holds .”

True to the words of D’Prince words, Rema wasted no time in dropping his first official single, Iron Man.

In March 2019, Rema’s debut single, Iron Man, hit the music world with a loud bang. The young singer released the track under the Mavin/Jonzing umbrella as Don Jazzy later revealed when he announced the song on his page.

Besides the exposure that Don Jazzy and Mavin’s fame would generate for the song, Iron Man did well by itself. Although he was not widely known before his track dropped, music enthusiasts were able to vibe to the song almost instantly.

Experts and critics tried to place his style and stated that it has elements of Afrobeats and Indiana sounds. The fame of the song and its reach became more pronounced after a former president of the United States, Barack Obama, included Rema’s Iron Man in his summer playlist in August 2019. The youngster featured on the respected playlist among music greats like Beyonce, Rihanna, Frank Sinatra, John Legend and many more.

On the back of the success of his first hit track, Rema did not slow down.

Rema released Dumebi in April 2019. While Iron Man may claim to be more internationally popular, Dumebi clearly outdid it on the local scene. It was Rema’s second single and it swept the audience off their feet. The song quickly drew comparisons between the young singer and a younger version of Ayodeji Balogun, known popularly as Wizkid .

It was likely that people were reminded of the early days when the Starboy CEO thrilled fans with such songs as Love My Baby and Gidi Girl. However, Rema, while he confessed that the comparisons flattered him, wanted people to understand that he is quite different. In an interview with Okay Africa,  he says in response to this kind of inquiry:

“People are entitled to their opinions and respect to those who’ve been holding the game down before me. I believe that I’m unique, that’s why I’m winning globally. I believe that I’m called for something very spiritual, beyond the human imagination so I care less about these comparisons.”

Meanwhile, just this February 2020, Rema did a remix of Dumebi and featured Latin American singer Rebbeca Marie Gomez, known by the stage name Becky G.

While the concluding section of this article gives a full summary of the songs contained in each of the three EPs that Rema has released so far, it is important to talk about them.

Rema’ debut EP – Rema

On 22nd March 2019, Rema dropped his first Extended Play album popularly called EP. He titled it Rema, after himself, and it brought four tracks with it including Iron Man, Why, Dumebi and Corny.

It was in this Rema’s first body of work project that the music world came to understand his range. The songs fall into Afrobeats, trap and hip hop category, thus showing the teenager’s versatility.

Rema’ sophomore EP – Freestyle

Rema’s second EP titled Freestyle came just three months after the release of Rema. Like Rema, Freestyle also contains four songs including Boulevard, American Love, Spiderman and Trap Out the Submarine.

While the EP did not achieve the same level of commercial success as the first project, it still did well. And Rema, true to his style brought dynamic sound-shifting delivery to the beats.

Rema’ third EP – Bad Commando

In October 2019, Rema dropped his latest EP project titled Bad Commando. Masterfully blending Afrobeats and rap together, Rema gives listeners the Olamide/Wizkid, feels according to some experts. Bad Commando also follows the Rema’s tradition of four songs in each EP. Lady is one of the biggest songs on the Bad Commando project as well as the track named Bad Commando as well. The other two are Rewind and Spaceship Jocelyn.

  • His manager, D’Prince, had called upon him on his track Lavida.
  • One of his most traditional songs is Ogologoma when DJ Big N featured the youngster.
  • Rema featured Alpha P in December 2019, on his song Starboy.

  • Rema also featured in Pholo and Belinda with Starboy CEO, Ayodeji Balogun popularly called Wizkid.
  • Rema’s 2020 debut single Beamer (Bad Boys) features Jamaican Rvssian

Rema Biography: awards and recognitions

Currently, Divine Ikubor, whose stage name is Rema, has been active for a little over a year in the Nigerian music industry. He has released about 13 songs with many of them doing very well in the competitive music industry. While having not been around for long, the young singer has won two awards already and a nomination in another.

  • At The Headies award in October 2019, Rema won the Next Rated artiste award beating Zlatan who had been strong opposition. The win had raised some controversy as many had been vying for Zlatan to clinch the award. However, many social commentators tied Zlatan’s loss to his issue with fans of ex-BBNaija housemate Tacha, which we covered in this link .
  • Rema was also nominated for the Headies Viewer’s Choice award.
  • Later, on 12th January 2020, he received the SounCity MVP award for the Best New Artist. He had beaten fellow new sensations like JoeBoy and FireBoy DML in the process.

Rema’s music style

For a long time after Rema started singing and dropping hits after hits, music commentators struggled to find a proper description for him. It was difficult because the artiste was much more dynamic than is customary among musicians.

One could describe Rema as an Afropop singer and be not entirely right while someone may call him a rapper and not be too far from the truth. In his own words, Rema provides the answer to what category he fits into:

“I’m here to make good music, I’m here to give people my sound. When I make music I don’t think too much I just do whatever my spirit leads. I’m not a rapper or some type of lyrical O.G and I’m not here to compete in that area. I trap ’cause trap genre helps me convey my emotions in a different way and I’m more familiar in that area. There’s no actual box I belong to, I create different types of sounds. I’m led by my spirit to create.”

Also, his Christian upbringing always rears its head in his statements. Once, when he was asked what gives him inspiration, Rema says:

“My inspiration is spiritual, from God and led by the prophecy I’m called to fulfil. I didn’t plan to create an EP for any particular purpose. These songs were recorded at different times beginning from 2018. Every song has its purpose, combined it creates a force the universe will reckon with. But in every creation I tend to create sounds that are beyond the regular, taking the youths to a new level. Showing them a fresh vision, showing them a new world.”

While Rema is still a teenager and unmarried, he is rumoured to have a girlfriend in Port Harcourt. The Mavin Global’s superstar had met the girl while performing on stage at the Trace In The City campus tour in August 2019. He had at one time also brought the girl to perform with him on stage.

Sometime later, Rema allegedly tweets: “ I wish I could see her again #Uniport. ”

He met up with her again by the end of August 2019 at the Chop Life summer season charity festival in Port Harcourt, and says: “ I found my Uniport girl “.

There is no proof of the two actually hanging out together, however.

The youngster is also causing the hearts of many women to race just by existing. A young Nigerian woman had gone on Facebook to express her feeling for him, posting:

“I can’t hide my feelings anymore 4 this boy, who knows him please telling him someone is deeply in love with him. I don’t need anything from him, I just need [a] one-night stand (sex) with him. Ever since I listen to his songs haven’t been myself. I love you Rema.”

Does Rema has a twin sister?

In September 2019, rumours went around that Rema allegedly has a twin sister. However, the truth of the matter was that there was truly a female fan of the young rising singer that looked very much like him.

Although the name of the lady is not known, her photos went viral for the striking resemblance between her and Rema. In the end, Rema met with her and even jokingly called her his twin sister.

Rema Biography: net worth

There is no verifiable data regarding Rema’s net worth. Forbes has not released any list of Nigerian artistes’ net worth that includes Rema. This is not surprising as he is just starting out. However, many blogs and online magazines have been speculating wildly.

For example, one blog claims that Rema is worth around $500,000 while another claims that it is something around $20,000. While no concrete fact is available about Rema’s net worth, we know that he makes some cool money by just signing with Mavin Records.

On YouTube, Rema likely makes between $768 to $12.3K or ($9.2K to $147.4K yearly), according to the statistics website Social Blade that tracks social media usage and trends.

Also, in September 2019, Rema penned an endorsement deal with HP. Since HP is a top international technology company based abroad and operating in Nigeria, it is likely the deal worth millions of naira.

Final thoughts …

Divine Ikubor, who goes by the stage name Rema, has turned out to be a very talented singer. He displays a dynamic range of talent that has defied a definition by music experts. While Rema may be popular for his hit tracks, he also professes faith in God in most of his utterances.

With age on his side and the backing of such music gurus as Don Jazzy and D’Prince, Rema is likely turn out to be the next big thing in the Nigerian music space.

Rema started his singing career by singing in the Christ of Mercy church with Alpha P. where he was a part of a program called “Rap Nation” that taught kids how to rap for the congregation. When he was just 14 years old, he was given a phone by the members of the church on which he downloaded the beats to practice his singing and rapping. [7] The Guardian In February 2018, he went viral when he uploaded a video of himself on Instagram freestyling on the beat of afro-pop singer D’Prince’s track “Gucci Gang.” It caught the attention of D’Prince himself who brought him to Lagos and made him a part of the Mavin Records family.

After a year of training, he became the first artist signed by Jonzing World, the first imprint record label under Marvin Records. In 2019, his debut EP ‘Rema’ came out which was an instant hit in Nigeria. “Iron Man” was later chosen to be his debut single.

Alleged DJ Neptune for Releasing Old Track without Consent

Rema took to Twitter in 2021 to accuse DJ Neptune of releasing the song “For You,” which was released as a part of the 16-track record Greatness 2.0.

Don’t violate the codes, can’t drop my song without my notice, can’t even remember the last time we spoke big bro, I pleaded with my manager behind the scenes when y’all tagged me before it dropped, y’all still went ahead! c’mon nau!”

Neptune responded to this by sharing some screenshots of the conversation with Sean Okeke (Rema’s manager) about the consent for collaboration before a possibility for a music video. He, therefore, denied any wrongdoing and also said that it was the fault on the part of Rema’s team.

I would like to categorically state that I am not in any way upset with Rema as it is obvious that proper information was not passed across to him through his available channels, and as a respectable human being, I only felt it was just normal for me to follow due process in anything I do and that was the step taken.”

Finally, Rema’s manager issued an apology and Rema took to Twitter to tell that everything is fine between him and DJ Neptune.
