Their idea is the Vortex, a bladeless wind turbine that looks like a giant rolled joint shooting into the sky. The Vortex has the same goals as conventional wind turbines: To turn breezes into kinetic energy that can be used as electricity. A more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly way to produce energy.

Rain Power: Harvesting Energy from the Sky

Trying to find alternative sources of energy has proven to be an extraordinary feat, allowing us to use everything from the sun to the motion of the ocean. But there is still one plentiful source of renewable energy which has so far remained pretty much untapped: rain. Getting energy from falling water droplets might seem like an obvious ‘why didn’t I think of that’ idea, but so far no-one has really exploited this plentiful (albeit somewhat unreliable) energy source. Now a team from CEA/Leti-Minatec has created a system that is capable of recovering kinetic energy from the impact of falling raindrops.

To capture the raindrops’ mechanical energy, the scientists used a PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) polymer, a piezoelectric material that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. When a raindrop impacts the 25-micrometer-thick PVDF, the polymer starts to vibrate. Electrodes embedded in the PVDF are used to recover the electrical charges generated by the vibrations.

Superconductivity is a phenomenon of exactly zero electrical resistance and rejection of magnetic fields occurring in certain materials when cooled below a critical temperature.

Superconductor-based products are extremely environmentally friendly compared to their conventional counterparts. They generate no greenhouse gases and are cooled by non-flammable liquid nitrogen (nitrogen comprises 80% of our atmosphere) as opposed to conventional oil coolants that are both flammable and toxic.

They are also typically at least 50% smaller and lighter than equivalent conventional units which translate into economic incentives. These benefits have given rise to the ongoing development of many new applications in the following sectors:

Superconductivity Application in Power System

If we have a conductor with no loss, we can make more efficient and reliable electrical infrastructure. Superconductor, which is zero resistance, is one of the promising solutions to make innovation on electric grids.

Superconductors enable lots of applications to support our aging and heavily loaded electric power infrastructure – for example, in generators, transformers, high tension underground cables, synchronous condensers and fault current limiters.

Slotless Ac Induction Motor

The present invention is a rotating induction motor that can provide higher peak torque than a conventional design, which achieves the shortcomings of the prior art by in regard to iron saturation by a slotless design; removing the iron slot provides more space for the conductor. The motor comprises a stator and a concentric rotor, separated from the stator by an air gap. The rotor has rotor bars and rotor windings. The stator is slot-less and comprises surface mounted conductors separated from each other by suitable insulation. An advantage of this design is that the motor does not exhibit typical behavior at high currents; there is no saturation effect

Magenn Air Rotor System (Mars)

The Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) is the next generation of wind turbines with cost and performance advantages over existing systems. MARS is a lighter-than-air tethered wind turbine that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to the wind, generating electrical energy. This electrical energy is transferred down the tether for consumption, or to a set of batteries or the power grid. Helium sustains the Magenn Air Rotor System, which ascends to an altitude as selected by the operator for the best winds. Its rotation also generates the “Magnus” effect. This aerodynamic phenomenon provides additional lift, keeps the MARS device stabilized, positions MARS within a very controlled and restricted location, and finally, causes MARS to pull up overhead to maximize altitude rather than drift downwind on its tether. It’s become mandatory rather than option to go for the renewable source of energy today in the whole world. For the same requirements we need advance options for future, hence MARS proves its excellence to use for better future.

“Smart Grids provide output and energy efficiency, and make it easier to exploit renewable energy sources. They can also help towards removing the need to expand existing grid capacity – something which would be unavoidable if Smart Grids hadn’t entered the stage”, says SINTEF’s Gerd Kjølle, who will be heading the CINELDI center.

Major demands are placed on the electricity grid when we cook our meals on induction hobs and charge up our electric cars at the same time. But Smart Grids enable us, for example, to give the grid operator permission to disconnect consumption linked to water heating, thus avoiding the need to expand grid capacity.

Smart Transformer for Smart Grid

Smart transformers are transformers which integrates a general transformer’s features with monitoring software and communication technology among others. Power transformers are one of the most important and complex component of the electricity generation and transmission process. An owner of a power transformer has to face certain challenges such as high maintenance cost for extending the life of a transformer among others.  Failure of a power transformer can lead to dire consequences such as revenue loss, life loss and legal consequences among others.Such challenges have led to the advent of smart transformers. These new-age transformers are designed to allow the maintenance of the power load independently. They can regulate the voltage constantly, while maintaining contact with the smart grid infrastructure, and deliver the optimal amount of power as and when required. They are programmed to allow remote monitoring and can act on any power fluctuations instantly. Provision for remote monitoring of critical components of the transformer, through in-built sensors, increases the reliability of continuous power distribution and reduces chances of transformer failure. Faults can be recognized remotely on a real-time basis and actions can be taken faster. The smart transformers are also more environment-friendly as they reduce energy consumption and thus reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses. They are also equipped to protect electrical equipment by safeguarding them from voltage fluctuations leading to increasing the longevity of that equipment.

A new bendable lithium-ion battery that can flex and twist could power wearable devices and one day is used to develop a flexible smartphone, according to Panasonic, which is developing the new battery.Although it’s still in the early stages of development, the battery already has been tested to withstand twists, bends and other deformations while maintaining its ability to hold a charge, according to Panasonic.

Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENG)

The TENGs rely on the triboelectric effect, by which certain materials become electrically charged when rubbed against another type of material. When the materials are in contact, electrons flow from one to the other, but when the materials are separated, the one receiving electrons will hold a charge.

If these two materials are then connected by a circuit, a small current will flow to equalize the charges. By continuously repeating the process, an alternating electrical current can be produced to generate power.

The widespread use of metal-catalysed batteries also raises many concerns, primarily related to safety, toxic metal pollution and the availability of costly, limited, irreplaceable or rare metal resources.

Enzymatic fuel cells (EFCs) are emerging electrobiochemical devices that directly convert chemical energy from a variety of fuels into electricity using low-cost biocatalyst enzymes. Inspired by living cells that can utilize complex organic compounds, for example, starch and glycogen) as stored energy sources, sugar-powered EFCs represent the next generation of biodegradable, highly safe biobatteries. Compared with microbial fuel cells, EFCs usually generate much higher power density in terms of mW cm−2. This feature highlights their great potential for powering a variety of portable electronic devices in the near future

Floating Power stations

Power generation and marine technology are successfully integrated in floating power plants. Floating, barge mounted power plants are constructed cost effectively and rapidly in well controlled industrial settings. They can easily be relocated and are therefore an ideal solution for power production on an interim basis as they can be connected to the grid to alleviate local power shortages where and when needed. Floating power plants can also provide a rapid answer to increased power demand in advance of coming land based power plants. Advantages of a floating power plant is that it Provides fast supply of electricity to areas with limited infrastructure. It is a mobile asset, possible to relocate or trade. It does not require a large site and is independent of soil quality.

Low smoke cables

A low smoke cable has a LSZH sheath. LSZH stands for Low Smoke Zero Halogen and refers to the compound making up the sheath of a cable. In the event of a fire, this type of sheath will emit very low levels of smoke, and non-toxic levels of poisonous halogen gases (typically under 0.5% HCl emission).After the King’s Cross fire in London in 1987 it became mandatory to use this type of sheathing on all London Underground cables since the majority of fatalaties occurred through gas and smoke inhalation rather than directly from the fire itself. This type of sheathing is mainly recommended for use in highly populated enclosed public areas.Other equivalent terms for this type of sheathing are LSHF (Low Smoke Halogen Free), LS0H (Low Smoke Zero Halogen), 0HLS (Zero Halogen Low Smoke). Written-Pole Technology

Written-Pole Technology allows the magnetic pole pattern on the magnet layer to be changed to a desired pattern while the machine is rotating and therefore breaks the relationship between rotor speed and output frequency. Written-Pole motor employs one of three modes of operation based on the rotational speed of the machine namely start mode, written pole mode & run mode. Written Pole motors use similar construction techniques found in conventional motors. A continuous layer of ferrite magnets on the surface of the rotor, along with a high-density exciter winding contained within the stator winding. The basic platform consists of conventional steel shaft inserted into a lamination stack containing a high resistance rotor cage.

Fire Retardant Tapes

Fire Retardant tapes function as a fire barrier to meet more demanding fire propagation and fire survival requirements. These tapes are based on a finely woven glass substrate, which has intrinsic fire retardant properties, and the surface coating also gives weave stability. All of these tapes are free from halogens and sulphur.The high tensile strengths give the additional benefit of excellent binding properties. There is a semi-conducting version available to complement the rest of the insulative range. It act as a barrier between the flame and the combustible core/insulation within the cable. Retains the integrity of the cable during and after exposure to fire. Extends the fire-survival time of the cable and its functions.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is an electrochemical conversion device that produces electricity directly from oxidizing a fuel. Fuel cells are characterized by their electrolyte material; the SOFC has a solid oxide or ceramic, electrolyte. Advantages of this class of fuel cells include high efficiency, long-term stability, fuel flexibility, low emissions, and relatively low cost. The largest disadvantage is the high operating temperature which results in longer start-up times and mechanical and chemical compatibility issues.

 Infrared Thermography

Infrared thermography is equipment or method, which detects infrared energy emitted from object, converts it to temperature, and displays image of temperature distribution. To be accurate, the equipment and the method should be called differently, the equipment to be called as infrared thermograph and the method to be called as infrared thermography. Recently, however, more and more public literatures show tendency not to pay attention to such appellative. We call our equipment as infrared thermography considering such generalization of the terminology.Characteristics of Infrared Thermography equipments are :It captures as a temperature distribution on a surface,and it can display as a visible information,Temperature can be measured from a distance without contacting an object,Temperature can be measured in real time.

The concept of transmitting power without using wires i.e., transmitting power as microwaves from one place to another is in order to reduce the transmission and distribution losses. This concept is known as Microwave Power transmission (MPT).Wireless Power Transmission system would completely eliminates the existing high-tension power transmission line cables, towers sub stations between the generating station and consumers and facilitates the interconnection of electrical generation plants on a  global scale. It has more freedom of choice of both receiver and transmitters. The Capital Cost for practical implementation of WPT seems to be very high and the other disadvantage of the concept is interference of microwave with present communication systems. Common beliefs fear the effect of microwave radiation. SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) generally refers to industrial control systems (ICS): computer systems that monitor and control industrial processes including those of manufacturing, production, power generation, fabrication, and refining, and may run in continuous, batch, repetitive, or discrete modes.Infrastructure processes may be public or private, and include water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, oil and gas pipelines, electrical power transmission and distribution, wind farms, civil defense siren systems, and large communication systems.Facility processes occur both in public facilities and private ones, including buildings, airports, ships, and space stations. PPTC circuit protection devices are made from a conductive polymer blend of specially formulated plastics and conductive particles. At normal temperature, the conductive particles form low-resistance chains in the polymer.However, if the temperature rises above the device's switching temperature, the crystallites in the polymer melt and become amorphous. The increase in volume during melting of the crystalline phase causes separation of the conductive particles and results in a non-linear increase in the resistance of the device. The heating can take place due to an increase in ambient or cell temperature, or it can be generated by resistive heating as in the case of an overcurrent condition. It can also be a combination of the two as in the case of a faulty charge. Ceramic Servomotors

The Piezoelectric effect in piezoceramics converts electrical field to mechanical strain. Under special electrical excitation drive and ceramic geometry of Nanomotion motors, longitudinal extension and transverse bending oscillation modes are excited at close frequency proximity. The simultaneous excitation of the longitudinal extension mode and the transverse bending mode creates a small elliptical trajectory of the ceramic edge, thus achieving the dual mode standing wave motor patented by Nanomotion.By coupling the ceramic edge to a precision stage, a resultant driving force is exerted on the stage, causing stage movement. The periodic nature of the driving force at frequencies much higher than the mechanical resonance of the stage allows continuous smooth motion for unlimited travel, while maintaining high resolution and positioning accuracy typical of piezoelectric devices. Piezoelectric materials produce an electric current if they are placed under mechanical stress. The process of Piezoelectric is reversible, and these materials change their shape slightly. Examples of these materials are quartz, aluminium nitride, and barium titanate. Piezoelectricity is an exciting field of nanotechnology. These materials are called smart materials.

Polyfuses are not fused but Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient Thermistors. These thermistors have a resistance that increases with temperature. Poly fuses are usually packaged in axial, radial, surface mount, washer form, or chip. They are available in voltage ratings of 30-250 volts and current ratings of 20mA to 100 A.

HVDC Transmission using Voltage Source Converters

Rapid advancements in power electronic devices with turn off capability like IGBT, the insulated gate bipolar transistors and GTO, the gate turn off transistors make the VSC (Voltage Source Converters) getting more attractive HVDC, i.e., High Voltage Direct Current Transmission. The VSC-based HVDC installations have several advantages: independent control of active and reactive power, dynamic voltage support, etc.

With the advancement in the field of technology, portable devices require more flexible batteries to power them. A paper battery is an ultra-thin energy storage and production device formed by combining carbon nanotubes with a traditional sheet of cellulose-based paper.

Temperature is one of the important parameters to tell the internal process, material, and even the desired output quality. Therefore, thermography is the temperature profiling of a surface or point. As the name suggests, infrared thermography is based on the Infrared(IR) technique. The principle underlying this technique is that every object emits a certain amount of IR energy and the intensity of this IR radiation is a function of temperature. In an electromagnetic spectrum, the IR region appears between 0.8 microns to 1000 micrometres.

Application of WLAN to Automatic Vehicles

Automated cars are the future means of transportation. The system connects a car with those in its vicinity using WLAN or wireless LAN to transfer data about the car's specifications, traffic conditions, lane shifting, and speed. The computer processes the information obtained from other cars. It uses parameters such as road rules obtained from the sensors placed along the road, the route map derived from the GPS database, and radar scanning to maintain optimum distance between other vehicles and obstructions.

Iontophoresis is a non-invasive technique to deliver medication through the skin to a specific area using a continuous and direct current. Anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic medications (dexamethasone and lidocaine) are the most common medications delivered using iontophoresis. Iontophoresis requires two electrodes, i.e., positive and negative charges. The placement of the electrodes is dependent on the polarity of the medication being delivered.

For example, dexamethasone has a negative polarity. Therefore, the electrode containing dexamethasone is placed over the affected body part and attached to the negative charge in the electrical circuit. Then the negative current repels the negative dexamethasone ions, driving them through the skin of the patient. Besides, lidocaine has a positively charged polarity so that the electrode would be connected to the positive charge in the electrical circuit.

The poke yoke's main objective is to achieve zero defects. It is just one of the many components of Shingo's Zero Quality Control (ZQC) system. ZQC is the goal to eliminate defective products. Poka-Yoke is a quality management theory explained by a Matsushita manufacturing engineer named Shigeo Shingo to restrict human errors from happening in the production line. Thus, Poka-Yoke translates to "avoiding careless errors".

Microcontroller based Missile Detection and Destroying

The microcontroller project is to design and build automated missile detection and destroying systems. The system is created to detect the target moving in varied directions. The destroying system runs automatically in the missile's direction and fires it upon fixing the target.

The system consists of a SONAR related object tracking system that continuously monitors the target. In detecting the target, it sends the location of the target to a Central Control System.

Plastic solar cells are not new; these plastic materials use nanotechnology and contain the first generation solar cells that can harness the sun's invisible infrared rays. The new plastic solar cell could allow up to 30% of the sun's radiant energy to be harnessed completely.

Lightning Protection using LFA (Lightning Frequency Arrester)

Lightning Protection using LFA is a simple, new, effective, and inexpensive method for lightning protection of medium voltage overhead distribution lines using long flashover arresters (LFA). It is designated as LFA-M that offers great technical and economical advantages.

Its modular long flashover arrester (LFA-M) is important because it can be applied for lightning protection of overhead distribution lines against induced overvoltage and direct lightning strokes. To preserve lines against direct lightning strokes, the arresters are attached between the poles and all phase conductors in parallel with the insulators.

The harmonics is the power quality in an ideal world that means how pure the voltage is and how pure the current waveform is in its sinusoidal form. It is very important to economic and industrial power system designs. If the current or voltage waveforms are distorted from its ideal form, it will be termed harmonic distortion. During the conversion from DC to AC, harmonics affect the power quality a lot.

Footstep power generation, a new way of power generation without any fuel and can be beneficial. Here piezoelectric crystal is used to generate electrical energy through a presser, and then it will be stored in the battery.

Automatic street lights need no manual operation for switching ON and OFF. Instead, when darkness rises to a certain value, automatically street light is switched ON, and when there is another source of light, i.e. day time, the street light gets OFF.

The sensitiveness of the street light can be adjusted. It uses 4 LEDs to indicate the bulb; with high power switching, one can connect Relay, i.e., electromagnetic switch at the output of pin 3 of IC 555.

When grouding a secondary current transformer eitheir in S1or S2 connected to a Relay protection should I respect the polarity of the analogic inputs of the relay (there is * showing the polarity of inputs so what happen if I ground * side in the PLC side of the power transformer(400kv) connected to protection Relay.
