  • Aligning personal values with the organization: The applicant references a shared commitment to patient-centered care, thereby showing personal alignment with the facility's values, which can be crucial in healthcare roles.
  • Demonstrating impact: Citing specific outcomes, like the introduction of a feedback system and the resolution of volunteer grievances, provides concrete evidence of the candidate's ability to enact meaningful changes within an organization.

Designing your nurse extern cover letter: what is the best format

Let's start with the basics, your nurse extern cover letter should include your:

  • Introduction
  • Body paragraph
  • Closing statement
  • Signature (that's not a must)

Next, we'll move to the spacing of your nurse extern cover letter, and yes, it should be single-spaced ( automatically formatted for you in our cover letter templates ).

Don't go for a old-school font (e.g. Arial or Times New Roman), but instead, pick an ATS-favorite like Chivo, Volkhov, or Raleway, to stand out.

Our cover letter builder is also set up for you with the standard one-inch margin, all around the text.

Finally, ensure your nurse extern resume and cover letter are in the same font and are submitted in PDF (to keep the formatting in place).

P.S. The Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't be assessing your [job] cover letter, it's solely for the recruiters' eyes.

The top sections on a nurse extern cover letter

  • Header: This section includes the nurse extern's contact information, the date, and the employer's contact details, ensuring that the recruiter knows who is applying and how to respond, setting a professional tone.
  • Greeting: A personalized greeting to the hiring manager by name shows attention to detail and that the nurse extern has taken the time to research the facility and demonstrates a genuine interest in being part of the team.
  • Introduction: This section should clearly state the position the nurse extern is applying for, briefly mention how they learned about the job opening, and express a strong interest in the position tied to a passion for the nursing profession.
  • Body: In this section, the nurse extern should articulate their relevant clinical experiences, skills, and any nursing-related coursework, highlighting how these elements make them a fitting candidate intimately familiar with the healthcare environment.
  • Closing: The closing should reiterate the applicant’s enthusiasm for the opportunity, invite the recruiter to review the enclosed resume, and include a statement about looking forward to discussing the externship in an interview, showing both courtesy and eagerness to engage further.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Eagerness to learn: Shows a strong commitment to expanding clinical knowledge and skills through hands-on experience.
  • Strong communication skills: Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and healthcare team members to provide quality care.
  • Compassion and empathy: Exhibits a genuine care for patients' well-being and the capacity to provide emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Team collaboration: Willing to work cooperatively with other healthcare professionals and contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Adaptability and resilience: Ability to handle high-pressure situations, adapt to various patient care settings, and bounce back from challenging experiences.

The nurse extern cover letter salutation: how to address hiring managers

After covering the format of your nurse extern cover letter, let's look at the salutation.

Back in the day, the cordial "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam", might have worked out fine.

But, nowadays, your cover letter should approach hiring managers on a more personal basis.

So, what to do about your cover letter salutation ?

If you've messaged the recruiters and are on a first name basis or a more formal one, use the hiring manager's name in the greeting (e.g. "Dear Sophie," "Dear Ms. Givens", or "Dear Mr. Everett,").

Always aim to make the effort to find out the name of the hiring manager, who'd be assessing your application. Search on LinkedIn, double-check the advert on the corporate website, or message the brand on social media to find out more about the role.

If you can't find the hiring manager's name (and still want to sound professional), use "Dear HR Team,", "Dear Hiring Manager,", or the likes.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Department] Team,
  • Dear [Hospital or Clinic Name] Recruiter,
  • Esteemed Colleagues,
  • Dear Nurse [Last Name],
  • Dear [Mr./Ms./Dr.] [Last Name],

Using your nurse extern cover letter intro to show your dedication

We know just how difficult it is to start writing your nurse extern cover letter introduction .

There are so many great qualities you have as a professional, which one should you choose?

How about writing up to two sentences about your passion and commitment to the work you do or are set to do?

Try to describe exactly what you enjoy about the potential role.

A positive attitude from the get-go will help you stand out as a motivated nurse extern professional.

Storytelling in the middle (or body) of your nurse extern cover letter

You've got your whole resume sorted, detailing your achievements and skills. What else can you write in your nurse extern cover letter ?

For starters, take the time to re-assess the job requirements and re-discover the most crucial skills and requirements (or keywords).

After making a list of these important keywords, look back on your experience to select just one of your past accomplishments.

Choose the achievement that is the most noteworthy, relevant to the role, and matches the required skills.

Use the next between three and six paragraphs to narrate how:

  • you've grown your skill set, thanks to your achievement;
  • you'd use the know-how you've gained in your new role;
  • your accomplishment could help your potential employers grow.

Remember that recruiters don't need a retelling of your whole resume, but want to find out what makes you, you.

A sincere and original way to end your nurse extern cover letter

When writing their nurse extern cover letter, candidates tend to use one of these phrases, "Sincerely yours" or "I look forward to hearing from you".

Both statements show good manners, but your cover letter should end in a more actionable manner .

Write about:

  • how you see yourself growing in the role/organization;
  • the benefits you would bring about (you'd impress even more with tangible metrics);
  • the next steps in the process (provide your availability for interviews).

What to write on your nurse extern cover letter, when you have zero experience

The best advice for candidates, writing their nurse extern cover letters with no experience , is this - be honest.

If you have no past professional roles in your portfolio, focus recruiters' attention on your strengths - like your unique, transferrable skill set (gained as a result of your whole life), backed up by one key achievement.

Or, maybe you dream big and have huge motivation to join the company. Use your nurse extern cover letter to describe your career ambition - that one that keeps you up at night, dreaming about your future.

Finally, always ensure you've answered why employers should hire precisely you and how your skills would benefit their organization.

Key takeaways

Turning your nurse extern cover letter into a success is all about staying authentic to yourself and relevant to the job:

  • Be creative with your nurse extern cover letter introduction by stating something you enjoy about the company (that is genuine) or about your skill set (to get the recruiters' interested);
  • Use single spacing and have a one-inch margin wrapping all around the content of your nurse extern cover letter;
  • Select just one past achievement from your career or life to tell a story of how you've obtained job-crucial skills and how they'd be beneficial to the role;
  • The finishing paragraph of your nurse extern cover letter doesn't necessarily have to be a signature but could be a promise of what you plan to achieve in the role;
  • Instead of focusing on your lack of experience, spotlight your transferable skills, one relevant achievement, and career dreams.

What Matters Most: Your Nursing Student for Externship Skills & Work Experience

Your resume skills and work experience

You know the ins and outs of medical procedures from your education, but what skills do you include on your resume ?

Think back to what you’ve learned in classes. You’re probably an expert in recording vital signs and running essential tests.

Now combine that with what the organization emphasizes in the nursing job ad . For instance, if the position requires working with elderly patients experiencing cognitive decline, then your knowledge in caring for patients with Alzheimer’s or dementia would be great to include.

To help further, here are some of the top nursing student for externship skills in today’s medical field.

9 top nursing student for externship skills

  • Direct Patient Care
  • Recording Vital Signs
  • Emergency Response
  • IV Administration
  • Surgical Assistance
  • Vaccine Administration
  • AdvancedMD EHR
  • PointClickCare

Sample nursing student for externship work experience bullet points

Before a medical practice puts you in a patient-facing setting, they want to verify you’ve applied your best skills effectively.

Quantifying your impact here will help. Think about things in numbers, like how many times you’ve successfully administered IVs.

Be mindful of the fact that the medical industry is fast-paced. Your examples should be concise to help medical hiring managers quickly identify your skills. One sentence on how you’ve recorded vital signs with 99 percent accuracy will go a long way.

Here are a few samples:

  • Used AdvancedMD EHR to track over 1,400 simulated patient records with 98% accuracy.
  • Successfully administered 535 flu vaccines to university students using top sterilization and safety protocols.
  • Recorded behavioral data from patients with Alzheimer’s in PointClickCare to help physicians provide 50% more efficient and accurate solutions.
  • Ran ECG systems during cardiovascular exams to help doctors diagnose heart conditions 80% more accurately.

Top 5 Tips for Your Nursing Student for Externship Resume

  • You’ll need to record patient data efficiently and accurately in the medical field. Submitting a resume free of grammatical or data errors starts things off on the right foot by showing you have the necessary skills.
  • Organizing your resume is crucial in the medical field, where data can be the difference in finding the right solutions. Medical hiring managers will look for applicants with clear headers for nursing education and previous work experience, bullet points, and easily readable 12 to 14 point font.
  • Since you don’t have much medical experience yet, an objective statement can provide a well-rounded overview of your top skills if you customize it. For example, you can explain how your nursing education and maintaining a 3.9 GPA in cardiology classes have equipped you to provide effective patient care.
  • You’ll want to list your most recent experiences first like you see our example resumes , which will be the most relevant to your current medical skills and knowledge in aspects like direct patient care and emergency response. It’ll also help employers look back to see how you’ve grown as you’ve gained more medical knowledge.
  • You know that data makes a huge difference in medical care. It’s also very impactful on resumes. You should include numerical examples, like how you implemented a new emergency response system to provide care 38 percent more efficiently.

Use a combination of experiences gained from education and applicable examples from any other work experience. For instance, if you received a perfect score on your exam monitoring major/minor trauma logs, that would be great to include.

One page is the best length for nursing student for externship resumes. Try to include as much relevant information to the position as possible. For instance, if you’ll be working in surgical assistance, your experience organizing surgical tools in the classroom or clinical setting with 99 percent accuracy is an ideal example to include.

A nursing cover letter is an excellent idea to provide more depth about your skills and interest in the field. Your cover letter can explain why you’re passionate about medical care or want to work in the specific nursing specialty you’re studying in school.

It is highly encouraged that you work with your school coordinator to find a placement location as they have likely helped other students from your school find placements in the past.  Frequent placement locations include: - Cancer Center - CAARE Center (Child and Adolescent Abuse Resource and Evaluation Center) - Emergency Department - Occupational Therapy - Orthopedics Clinic - Pharmacy Operations - Physical Therapy - Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Services - Psychology - Radiology - Respiratory Therapy
  • STEP 2: Verify Affiliation Agreement
  • A student must be affiliated with an educational institution and collect credits/units for an externship. The course of study must be fully accredited and the school must be fully accredited as well. An affiliation agreement between UC Davis Health and the potential extern's school is required to protect the liability of UC Davis Health. Since an externship is traditionally unpaid experience that allows a student to obtain credit for their work at the hospital, the student's school must take legal responsibility for the student’s conduct during their externship at UC Davis Health. Please review the Affiliation Agreements Database   (PDF) for a list of active affiliation agreements and record your Affiliation Agreement number on the first page of your Externship Packet. If an affiliation agreement needs to be established, the department that has accepted the student as a prospective extern will manage the process to set up the agreement.  This process usually takes about 8 weeks.  Students who are attending a University of California school do not require an affiliation agreement (UC Berkeley, UCSF, etc.)
  • STEP 3: Complete Outside Clearance Form
  • Medical clearance is required for all students who want to extern at UC Davis Health. Medical clearance can be obtained by the student’s primary care physician or health care clinician (RN). Students without primary care physicians may have their vaccination information verified by the medical professional at their school’s hospital or clinic. Outside Clearance Form All sections of the Outside Clearance Form must be completed with dates for this form to be considered complete. You must submit your completed Externship Clearance Form with your Externship Packet.   HEP B: Hepatitis B is a series of vaccinations that could take up to six months to complete. If the student is not vaccinated prior to the expected start date, the placement department may choose to enter into an agreement by both parties signing the Hep B Vaccination Agreement .
  • STEP 4: Complete Mandatory Training
  • The following yearly training is required for students who want to extern at UC Davis Health to ensure departments remains in compliance with hospital requirements. Complete the training via the following links, then save your certificate of completion to submit with your completed packet: Privacy and Security Mandatory Annual Training Manual (MAT)
  • STEP 5: Submit Externship Packet
  • All pages of the packet must be filled out completely and legibly.  Note “n/a” where applicable, for example, if you do not have a middle name.  Please ensure that you attach these completed documents: Outside Clearance Form, Privacy and Security Certificate. Your packet cannot be processed by your placement department without all of the required documents. Submit the completed packet to your placement department. Please allow sufficient time (6-8 weeks lead time recommended) for your department to review and verify your information.
  • STEP 6: Pass UC Davis Health Background Check
  • The background check process is an essential part of ensuring hospital safety and compliance. Background check paperwork can take up to one month to process. Please make sure that the Background Check Authorization Form is completed, signed, and submitted with your Externship Packet.  Placement Department: Please forward the Background Check Authorization Form and the Externship Clearance Form to [email protected] once you have reviewed and approved the Packet.
  • STEP 7: Start your Externship!

Start date is set by your department and students are cleared for one year from start date.

UCSD Nurse Intern/Extern cover letter Help

Nursing Students Student Assist

Hello All -

I'm an ABSN student currently in the 4th semester (of 6) preparing to apply for a nursing student EXTERNSHIP for Summer semester. I will also be competing for competitive placement for INTERNSHIP/PRECEPTORSHIP in the Fall semester over which I have little control from what I am told...

My school has made it crystal clear that Critical Care placements are elusive, few and far between, rare, "highly unlikely" etc... However, the ONLY location we are eligible to apply for this summer ( UCSD , yay) does in fact offer ICU, ED, PCU placements. So, I plan to apply ANYWAY and hope for the best! My interest is in that specific order... but I am a little lost on what to write on a cover sheet and how to make myself stand out! I have a standard cover letter, stating my interest in their facility, and that I hope to put my education into real world practice, etc... but it just seems kinda boring and basic. Has anyone out there completed a UCSD externship, and if so what do you think made your application successful??

I do already have BLS, ACLS, and Mental Health First Aid certifications. I also have previous work experience as an Inpatient Case Manager, so I am well versed in providing patient education, discharge planning, etc. I'm not sure these skills are super transferable to ICU or ED so I'm a little stumped on how to sell myself properly to secure what I am confident is a VERY competitive unit placement.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND INFO --- Since the summer externships are both NOT REQUIRED & would also cost $1,200 in extra tuition ...if I do not get the placement I am seeking I do not plan on completing the externship at all. I know that might sound bad, but I am being picky since I am pretty broke and the time commitment would also be considerable (120 hrs in 10 weeks). A MedSurg internship/preceptorship is basically guaranteed for my final semester, so I don't want to pay extra tuition for more of the same if that makes any sense.

Thanks in advance for any and all input. :)

I am in your same position, just a few years later ? I was bummed to see that no one had replied back to you or has since created any more posts about UCSD’s externship program. Did you end up getting in, if you don’t mind me asking? Any tips for an applicant?
