Every year, Global Family Day is celebrated on January 1. As we begin the new year on a fresh note, it is important to understand how all of us are connected through love and humanity.

In 1997, the United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. In 1999, the members of the United Nations received a formal invitation to dedicate the first day of the year to developing strategies to bring peace to the world. Since then, Global Family Day has been celebrated every year on the same date.

Significance:

Global Family Day is also known as World Peace Day as it speaks of the importance of bringing harmony and unity in diversity. One of the best ways to celebrate Global Family Day is by making people aware of the wars and conflicts and how we can come together to bring peace and happiness. We can also organise an informative webinar with our immediate community and urge people to come together and celebrate peace and hope.

Global Family Day: History, significance and celebrations; all you need to know

In a world that stands divided by more than just physical borders, there arises a need to stand united. As human beings, we have an innate need and desire to forge friendships based on commonality and a deep desire to feel needed. Unconsciously or subconsciously, we are always looking to feel a sense of belonging. Often, this leads to the formation of groups or clans and results in discrimination based on religion, caste, culture and ideologies. However, before our sense of individuality, we need to stand united not just as a family, with our loved ones, but also with others on a global scale. This is precisely what Global Family Day celebrates. This landmark day is celebrated annually, to remind the people of the United States of America and the rest of the world that we have a responsibility to be respectful and honor our promises to our global families. This landmark celebration takes place on 1st January every year to go beyond narrowmindedness and strife, to develop and foster a sense of understanding and kinship among people of the world. So, one of the questions in your mind might be regarding the background or history of Global Family Day. If it is so, you’re in luck as we are going to brief you on that.

History Of Global Family Day

The concept of Global Family Day emerged from two books which will forever be etched in the memory of mankind. The first is a children’s story, ‘One Day in Peace, January 1, 2000’ which was authored by Steve Diamond and Alan Silverstein. In a capsule, the story envisions a world filled with global peace, harmony, and unity. It speaks about how people choose one particular day, January 1, to put away all differences and celebrate their sense of brotherhood. The book discourages war and the differences which people create to stand apart from others. The other book entitled, ‘Tree Island: A Novel for the New Millennium’ by the American activist and novelist, Linda Grover speaks of how January 1 becomes a momentous occasion for people to join hands together and come together as a global family. The idea of Global Family Day is a relatively new one as it emerged only in the 21st century. However, its meaning and significance are vast and know no bounds in terms of time and reach. You might be wondering how such a day is relevant to you, your family and your children. Well, there are tons of reasons why Global Family Day needs to be celebrated.

What is International Family Day?

Closely tied to Globally Family Day is International Family Day. Both occasions share common ideals and concepts but are separated in terms of their origin. International Family Day can be traced back to the 1990s and was born out of a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994 as a day to remember the importance of families and societies in the world. The initiative focuses on different aspects of family life and its impact on society. It is celebrated on a worldwide scale on 15th May in many ways. Some set up workshops, while others arrange for seminars and campaigns to spread awareness of the importance of family in our lives.

Significance And Importance of Celebrating Global Family Day

  • Bridging Differences- One of the key fundamentals of celebrating Global Family Day is to bridge differences and embrace unity in diversity. The day serves as a reason to celebrate togetherness and experience the idea of shared humanity. Celebrating this day at home will help teach our little ones to overcome petty differences which they encounter and will continue to encounter throughout their school and professional lives. Promoting an atmosphere of love and tolerance is the cornerstone of Global Family Day.
  • Encourages an exchange of culture- Celebrating a day of peace in the world allows all people, belonging to different backgrounds to learn and imbibe new traditions and cultures. It provides a steady platform to widen our horizons of thinking so the coming generations will not fall prey to the narrowmindedness of the past. While it is important to remember one’s roots and the past one comes from, it is equally important to learn from past mistakes and rectify them before they occur again in the future.
  • Strengthens Family Bonds- This day serves as a perfect excuse for us as parents to set aside time for our young ones. Bonding between mother and child or father and child requires nothing but time and effort. This day provides the best possible reason to work on being a family and celebrating the togetherness of your near and dear ones. Perhaps a meaningful dinner, just like Thanksgiving, but with the idea of being thankful for each other and world peace. A fun way of captivating and engaging little ones on this day is by engaging them in International Family Day crafts like paintings, poster-making and simple drawings. As parents and guardians, we can also reinforce the idea of that momentous day by reciting International Family Day quotes to make the occasion even more meaningful.
  • Raising awareness regarding global concerns- The best way to arrive at peaceful resolutions is by presenting a problem in a conducive and healthy environment. Discussions and programmes on certain global concerns can be addressed to spread awareness. Such programmes can be held in schools and other educational institutions to teach children about world problems and how they can be resolved through peaceful methods.

Global Family Day 2023: History, significance and celebrations; all you need to know

Observed every year on 1 January, Global Family Day is celebrated to start the new year with a message of peace and unity among people. As people around the world have welcomed the year 2023 with great fervour, it also comes with the hope that Global Family Day will establish the idea of global unity and harmony. It is pertinent to note that the day is observed on the same day as New Year so that families can come together and celebrate the occasion with their loved ones. Overall, the event promotes the idea that ‘Earth is a Global Family’. As we enter a new year and look forward to more happiness and prosperity for all, let’s know in detail about the global event.

Global Family Day 2023: History

The idea was coined in November 1997 after people were inspired by a book titled ‘One Day In Peace – January 1, 2000,’ which was released by the United Nations. It was the same time when the United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. Following this in 1999, UN members also received an invitation to formally celebrate the first day of the year as ‘Global Family Day’.

Acting upon the same, an annual event was organised in 2001 and it did make a global impact. Linda Grover, a peace activist, played a key role in promoting the day on a global scale.

Global Family Day 2023: Significance

Also called World Peace Day, Global Family Day is celebrated to unite people from all corners of life. While it aims to promote the concept of harmony and unity, it also emphasises the idea of a ‘global village’ where everyone is the same, regardless of their colour, background, or place of origin. Observed on the first day of the year, Global Family Day sees people resolving to work toward the betterment of all, for harmony and peace, and further to unite everyone in society.

Global Family Day 2023: Celebrations

While the event is majorly celebrated in the United States, Global Family Day is observed by organising events in line with the occasion. Some local groups also plan events to bring families together and spread the message of unity and harmony.

Global Family Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the unity and diversity of families worldwide offers a unique opportunity to strengthen family bonds and embrace our shared humanity.

In a world where the pace of life often leaves little room for quality family time, this day serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of family in our lives.

So, let’s explore the essence of Global Family Day, its history, significance, and, most importantly, fun and creative ways to celebrate it with your family.

When Is Global Family Day celebrated?

Global Family Day is celebrated annually on January 1st, a date that resonates with new beginnings and collective hope. So, what is Global Family Day? Each year, this special day is often marked by a specific “Global Family Day theme” that highlights various aspects of family and community values.

It’s a time when people are already in the spirit of celebration, making it the perfect opportunity to extend the joy of the holiday season into the new year with a focus on family values and togetherness .

What is the history of Global Family Day?

So, let’s start by exploring the history of Global Family Day. The roots of Global Family Day can be traced back to the year 2000.

It originated from the United Nations’ Millennium celebration, “One Day of Peace and Sharing.” The idea was to start the new millennium with a day dedicated to peace and shared values.

The day gained official recognition in the United States when the U.S. Congress issued a resolution in 2001, making the first day of every year henceforth Global Family Day.

The initiative was a step toward encouraging global community awareness and families to share and care for each other and the world.

Why is Global Family Day celebrated?

Global Family Day transcends beyond mere celebration; it’s a day that underscores the importance of family units as the foundational building blocks of societies.

It’s a day to promote peace, share love, and strengthen the bonds that tie families together. In a broader sense, it encourages us to view the global population as one large family, promoting ideals of peace, empathy, and unity among all people.

Turn your kitchen into a global culinary stage. Assign each family member a country and have them prepare a dish from that nation. This activity is not only fun but educational, as it encourages learning about different cultures and cuisines , promoting a sense of global family.

3. Family tree project

Dedicate this day to creating or updating your family tree. Involve older family members to share stories and information about their ancestors. This activity strengthens family ties and provides a sense of belonging and history. It can be one of the fantastic Global Family Day activities.

4. Community service

As a family, participate in a community service project. Whether volunteering at a local shelter, organizing a neighborhood clean-up, or helping at a senior center, giving back to the community can be a rewarding way to celebrate the essence of Global Family Day.

You can also prepare a Global Family Day speech as a way to inspire others in your community. Share your thoughts on the importance of family , community, and global unity.

5. Family Olympics

Organize a series of fun, competitive games for your family. This could include traditional sports, board games, or creative challenges. The focus should be on teamwork, laughter, and creating joyful memories.

Host a cultural exchange evening with another family or a group of families. Each family can share something unique from their cultural background – be it food, music, dance, or stories. This activity celebrates diversity and cultivates a sense of global community.

Watch this TED Talk where Simone Buijzen, an expert in cross-cultural communication, emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting cultural differences to enhance effective communication and collaboration:

7. Family reflection and resolution session

Gather as a family and reflect on the past year. Share individual achievements, challenges, and learnings. Then, as a family, set goals or resolutions for the new year. This activity not only strengthens communication but also reinforces support and unity within the family.

How is Global Family Day celebrated around the world?

In many communities, Global Family Day is also a day of civic engagement. Families participate in community service, environmental conservation activities, or peace-promoting events.

Schools and educational institutions often organize programs and activities that encourage children to think about the concept of a global family and the importance of peace and understanding across cultures.

The International Day of Families is celebrated in different ways across the globe. In some communities, public officials arrange for discussions and discourses on the various challenges faced by families in said communities. Some countries plan their activities and events organised based on the particular theme set by the United Nations. Individuals also choose to celebrate this day by spending time with their family . While this day is considered important by governments across the globe, the day is not a public holiday.

International Family Day celebrations

World Family Day in India is also celebrated in a big way with various organisations and companies also joining in on the celebrations. Here, the objectives of observing this occasion are to celebrate the bonds in a family and to raise awareness regarding the issues families face. Companies organise events for their employees and their families. This allows family members of the employees to understand the company culture and form bonds with other people in the company. Events include games, music shows, and dance performances.

Indians are brought up with a strong connection with their families no matter which section of society they belong to. In fact, many Indians still live in the joint family setup based on patrilinear lines. There is a large need for awareness of the various problems faced by families in Indian society for which this day could prove to be a great opportunity. There are many ways in which you can celebrate International Day of Families.

  • This is a great day to spend time with your family. You can set up activities for your family, such as board games, singing competitions and more. Make this day about bonding with your family.
  • You can ask various family members to talk about any issues they might be facing. Ensure that the conversation takes place in a safe space and let everyone know that they will not be reprimanded for speaking their mind.
  • Use this opportunity to establish any support channels the family might need; for example, a child may be feeling quite pressured due to his piling schoolwork and may require more support from the family. Let the family come together and create solutions as a family.

Conversations between family members

  • You can use this day as a great excuse to create memories. Plan a photo shoot with family members. You can get as creative as you’d like to with props or even have it at a location that means something to your family.
  • You can also celebrate this day with people who are part of your society and daily life by organising a street party with other families in your neighbourhood. This is a great way to connect with your community.
  • Use this day as an opportunity to teach your family about community service. You can sign up with community outreach programs and help other impoverished families on this day.
  • If you are away from your family, then reach out to your friends who might be in a similar situation. It is important that you create a community for yourself that will support you and share your joys. Do not underestimate the power of creating your own family whose bonds are based on trust and love.

Families are one of the most important aspects of any society. It is here that children are taught how to interact and integrate with other members of society. Elders are supported by their families as well. It is important to take the time to nurture familial bonds and address issues faced by families. If a family unit is happy and healthy, the individual members of such a family are sure to become healthy and contributing members of society.

Global Family Day 2023: History, Significance, Theme And All That You Need To Know

The purpose of the event is to emphasize the binding force of humanity despite the religious, cultural, and linguistic differences among people worldwide..

Global Family Day 1st January 2023 History Significance Theme Global Family Day 2023: History, Significance, Theme And All That You Need To Know

New Delhi:  Global Family Day is celebrated annually on January 1 to kick start the year positively and promote peace, love, and unity among people. The event, which was observed on January 1, 2000, aims to strengthen familial ties. The purpose of the event is to emphasize the binding force of humanity despite the religious, cultural, and linguistic differences among people worldwide.

Global Family Day 2023: History

A book titled "One Day In Peace - January 1, 2000," published by the United Nations, served as the inspiration for the concept, which was first proposed in November 1997. The narrative envisions a perfect society where everyone agrees to cooperate in order to build a peaceful and happy planet Earth.

In addition, the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World was being started at the same time by the UN General Assembly. Following this, UN members were also given the opportunity to officially observe January 1 as "Global Family Day" in 1999.

Acting on this, a yearly event was planned in 2001 and it had a significant global influence. Peace campaigner Linda Grover was instrumental in popularising the day on a global basis.

This day also coincides with the World Day of Peace which was established in 1967 and is celebrated annually by the Catholic Church.

Global Family Day 2023: Significance

Global Family Day, which is observed in January, is a time to honour families everywhere and the support and love they have to offer.

On Global Family Day, we pay tribute to the families that have taken us into their homes, provided for us when we were in need, and supported us through good times and bad. We also honour how strong family ties are and how they can get over any difficulty.

The event as a whole promotes the notion that 'Earth is a Global Family', regardless of colour, creed and race. While most of the festivities are held in the United States, Global Family Day is marked by planning events that fit the event. Additionally, some neighbourhoods organize events to unite families and promote peace and harmony.

In 1999, all U.N. member states were invited to formally dedicate the first day of that year to developing strategies for peacebuilding. Recognizing the positive impact, the U.N. declared Global Family Day an annual event in 2001.

International Family Day: ‘Listen First’ Helps Families Worldwide

speech on global family day

The International Day of Families is observed by the United Nations (UN) each year on May 15th to spread awareness about the benefits of family systems and the social and economic processes affecting families.

The family is one of the most powerful institutions affecting children's overall development and well-being. It can either protect young people from or put them at a higher risk of substance use and other risky behaviors. "Effective drug use prevention strategies should therefore focus on the healthy and safe development of children and youth to realize their potential. One powerful way of doing so is strengthening parenting skills and the conditions that support healthy, happy families," explains Ms. Giovanna Campello, Chief UNODC Prevention, Treatment & Rehabilitation Section.

To that end, 'Listen First' is a UNODC initiative, based on science, investing in materials to aid children and youth’s well-being, their families, and their communities. It emphasizes that listening to children and youth is the first step to helping them grow healthy and safe and encourages other positive behaviors that parents and caregivers can do to help their children’s healthy development.

Research proves that warm, caring, and involved parenting are some of the most important factors protecting especially young children and early adolescents from initiating substance use. On the other hand, children growing up in a marginalized and deprived community with little or no family support, and children subjected to family neglect and abuse, are especially at risk.

The Science of Family Activities

When parents are positively involved in their children’s lives, for example helping them with their homework, staying informed about their lives and friendships, and maintaining an open communication, young people are more well-adjusted, perform better in school and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors including violence, risky sexual behavior and substance use.

Quality family time builds stronger, more connected families. Doing family activities together, such as sports, cooking, and playing games or music, helps families bond and build trust. In addition, it improves communication and creates more self-confident children.

Studies have linked having family dinners together to increased resiliency in children, higher academic achievement, improved mental and physical health, and reduced risk of substance abuse and eating disorders.

'Listen First' provides families and those working with families with science-based information presented in a fun, engaging way.

Teachers, health workers, and other professionals working in the field of prevention who are interested in using the materials are encouraged to get in touch .

Global Family Day

Global Family   Day

Each year, Global Family Day comes with opportunities to celebrate the importance of the family unit as a building block for a better tomorrow.

Most people wish for world peace and many people are working toward making the planet a better place. And one of the most important ways that less violence and more peace can be experienced in the world may be related to building and strengthening families.

The connection between world peace, communities and families is what Global Family Day is all about!

History of Global Family Day

Global Family Day evolved through the efforts toward world peace near the end of the 20th century. In 1997, the United Nations General Assembly began making plans for launching the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World.

One of the important efforts toward this end was the launch of a book sponsored by Linda Grover, called “One Day in Peace – January 1, 2000”. The launch of the decade of peace, as well as the book, revolved around the idea that some day, in the future, there could be a time when there is no more war on the planet.

As the idea for the decade of peace continued to develop, all of the United Nations member states were invited to formally dedicate January 1 of 2000 to making efforts toward building peace on the planet. Because the day was so successful and gained so much traction, the United Nations decided to make it an annual event beginning in 2001, when it was called Global Family Day.

Families who are healthy in physical, emotional and economic ways are the foundations of communities that live at peace. And the theory is that peaceful communities lead to peaceful countries which should ultimately lead to making the world a better place.

How to Celebrate Global Family Day

Have fun and enjoy celebrating Global Family Day by participating in some activities together. Try out some of these ideas:

Spend Time with Family

One of the most important factors involved with Global Family Day is the idea that the efforts made toward peace in the world are directly related to the support of the family. Families who are healthy will spend time together, offer strength and support to each member, and create stability which can transfer to communities around the world.

One way a family can build strength is simply by committing to eating dinner together each day. Good communication through family meetings, as well as working together toward common goals, are ways that family members can strengthen bonds and promote peace.

Some specific activities that can be pursued in honor of Global Family Day might be to plant a family garden, go camping in the backyard, cook some meals together or take a hike. No matter what you do together, be sure to take note of these stories that can be turned into important memories for the family to bond over!

Watch Some Films About Peace and Family

Movies can certainly be entertaining, but that’s not all! Families can often grow with movies that offer access to deep topics as watching them together can prompt discussions between family members about how to make the world a better place.

Consider watching one of these movies about efforts toward peace on Global Family Day:

  • Selma (2014). A biographical chronicle about the important actions of Martin Luther King, Jr’s campaign toward equality in voting rights, particularly the 1965 protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
  • Gandhi (1982). A period biographical film, this one is based on the life of peacemaker Mahatma Gandhi and the efforts toward the independence of India from British rule.
  • Loving (2016). This true biographical story is about a family who were victims of racism in the 1960s when they were arrested for interracial marriage.
  • The Incredibles (2004). Though this film isn’t exactly one that is based on reality, it’s still an example of what can happen when families use their talents and gifts, working together to stop evil and make the world a better place.

Make an Effort Toward Peace

Although establishing peace in the entire world might feel a bit like a far reach, one real way to go about making peace in the world is for individuals and families to live together at peace on a local level. Consider some of these ideas for working toward building peace in honor of Global Family Day:

  • Personally commit to nonviolence . Global Family Day takes place on the first day of the year, which means it is a good time to renew or make new commitments toward living in peace and speaking out against violence.
  • Volunteer for a charity that promotes peace. Individuals and families can work together toward making the world a better place by volunteering for organizations that build community, reduce violence, and promote safety.
  • Speak out against discrimination and prejudice. When unjust situations occur, don’t be afraid to speak out and stand up for those who are being discriminated against, excluded or bullied.
  • Start a conversation about peace. Don’t forget that your sphere of influence is all around you, in the people you already know. Consider using Global Family Day as an opportunity to kindly start talking with friends, coworkers and family members about ways to promote peace.

Create Family Goals

Instead of just making individual New Year’s resolutions, consider using this opportunity to make resolutions as a family. Global Family Day is a perfect time for family members to have a meeting and brainstorming session to consider the goals they want to make and intentions they want to set for the upcoming year that could result in making the world a more peaceful place.

Consider using this day as an opportunity for making plans to volunteer for a charity together or to serve in the community as a family. Create or review various family values and rules, and have everyone recommit to caring for and loving each other in a more effective way.

World Family Day

Why World Family Day is Celebrated ?

To remind and recognize the importance of a family, general assembly of United Nations proposed to celebrate international/world family day on every 15 of May, this decision was taken in 1993 and from 1994 to onwards, this day is celebrated all over the world. Every year the general secretary United Nations suggests a specific motto in the relevance of that day. For example, this year 2015, the phrase set was “Men in charge? Gender equality and children’s rights in contemporary families”, so all the meetings, conferences and programs held on 15 May 2015 covered the discussions on the mentioned phrase. This motto was about the male dominance in a family, male and female equality and protection of children rights in a family relationship.

Purpose of Celebration

The main purpose to celebrate this day is to raise awareness of individual rights in a family, creation of friendly environment among the parents and children, and to recognize the importance of a prosperous family relationship.

It is the need to time to develop awareness of a complete family, because there are many children, boys and girls who are the victims of broken family relationships and as a result they have involved in unlawful activities and destroying their lives in doing criminal activities. People need to understand that separation and anger is not the solution of problem, patience, love, care and discussion is the solution of problem.

Global Family Day, also known as World Peace Day is celebrated annually on January 1 to start the year positively and promote peace, love, and unity among people. Observed on the first day of the year, Global Family Day sees people resolving to work toward the betterment of all, for harmony and peace, and further to unite everyone in society.

The day will have even more meaning in 2024 as it serves as a reminder of the value of unity and connection in a world where reality is constantly changing

Hyderabad: Global Family Day, also called World Peace Day, is observed every year on January 1 to kick off the year in a positive manner and to encourage love, peace, and harmony among all people. On the first day of the year, people around the world celebrate Global Family Day, making resolutions to improve the lives of others, promote harmony and peace, and further bring people together.

The day will have even more meaning in 2024 as it serves as a reminder of the value of unity and connection in a world where reality is constantly changing. 'Global Family' is the concept which is promoted by Global Family Day. In the end, we are connected to each other. There is no gene specific to race and our genetic makeup is essentially the same.

History: The idea was first put forth in November 1997 and inspired by a book called "One Day In Peace "on January 1, 2000, which was published by the United Nations. The narrative envisions a perfect society in which everyone chooses to cooperate in order to establish a successful and peaceful planet Earth. At the same time, the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World was officially established by the UN General Assembly.

According to the book "One Day in Peace," UN members were also invited to formally observe January 1 as "Global Family Day" in 1999. Global Family Day was first observed on January 1, 2000, but in reality, the United Nations declared in 2001 that it would be celebrated on that day, and the celebrations have been going on ever since.

Significance of the day in Today's World: Even more significance is attached to Global Family Day in an era of widening social and political divisions. Despite advances in technology that have connected us all over the world, social isolation and individualistic lifestyles are on the rise. On Global Family Day, we are reminded of the critical role families play in reducing feelings of isolation, promoting a sense of belonging, and offering emotional support. It promotes fostering these relationships in order to improve individual well-being and foster more effective communication.

Reaffirm the importance of family: The day has come to represent the rich diversity of families from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and family structures over the years. It encourages diversity and honors the special bonds that, despite their differences, keep families together. Recognize the unwavering support, love, and sense of community that families offer.

Addressing Global Challenges: Global concerns including economic inequality, political unrest, and climate change are urgent. On Global Family Day, we encourage collaboration and togetherness in addressing these issues. It highlights the value of group effort and shared accountability, serving as a timely reminder that, as members of one big family, we must cooperate to create a sustainable and just future.

Celebrate Unity and Diversity: The day's primary goals are to spread the ideas of harmony and unity and to highlight the notion of a "global village" in which all people are the same regardless of their race, origin, or background by emphasizing the virtues of acceptance and love.

Encourages exchange of culture: Observing a Global Day of Peace enables individuals from all backgrounds to acquire knowledge about and absorb new customs and civilizations.

Celebrations: Although this day is primarily celebrated in in the United States, events are held to commemorate Global Family Day in other countries too. The best way to observe Global Family Day is to spend time with your family. Families gather to make dinner together and partake in other activities that promote peace and closeness to the family on this day.

Appreciate All Parents Throughout the World

Since the 1980s, the important role of the family has increasingly come to the attention of the international community. The General Assembly adopted a number of resolutions and proclaimed the International Year of the Family and the International Day of Families.

Emphasizing the critical role of parents in the rearing of children, the Global Day of Parents recognizes that the family has the primary responsibility for the nurturing and protection of children. For the full and harmonious development of their personality, children should grow up in a family environment and in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding.

Designated by the General Assembly in 2012, Global Day of Parents provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents for their "selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship."

Families, parents and caregivers play a central role in child well-being and development. They offer identity, love, care, provision and protection to children and adolescents as well as economic security and stability. In keeping with the spirit of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, family and parenting support is increasingly recognized as an important part of national social policies and social investment packages aimed at reducing poverty, decreasing inequality and promoting positive parental and child well-being.

During the 1980's, the United Nations began focusing attention on the issues related to the family. In 1983, based on the recommendations of the Economic and Social Council, the Commission for Social Development in its resolution on the Role of the family in the development process ( 1983/23 ) requested the Secretary-General to enhance awareness among decision makers and the public of the problems and needs of the family, as well as of effective ways of meeting those needs.

In its resolution 44/82 of 9 December 1989, The General Assembly proclaimed 1994 as the International Year of the Family ; and in resolution 47/237 of 1993, the General Assembly decided that 15 May of every year to be observed as the International Day of Families .

In 2012, the General Assembly proclaimed 1 June as the Global Day of Parents, to be observed annually in honour of parents throughout the world.

Support for parenting

Like no one else, parents and caregivers shape the experiences that build their children’s brains and set them on a path towards healthy development. Parenting is too big a job for parents and caregivers to do alone. They need support to give their children the best possible start in life.

Why do we mark International Days?

International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. We also mark other UN observances .

Global Family Day – January 1, 2023

  • 2 Other Celebrations on January 1
  • 3 How to Celebrate Global Family Day

Global Family Day is an annual celebration observed on January 1st of every year. People all over the world find no time to spend with their families. The reason varies from person to person due to their work, living atmosphere, and so on. This Day is celebrated as the global day of peace and sharing in the United States.  Spending time with family members has reasonably reduced in recent years. To change this scenario,  Global Family Day has been established. The Day aims in promoting peace and sharing. The purpose of this Day is to make all the families gather as one single society on the first day of every year to welcome the New Year .

“You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.” – Desmond Tutu

History of Global Family Day

The year at which Global Family Day was first celebrated is not exactly known. The origin of this Day is unclear. However, many people believe that this Day begins with the proclamation of the United Nations General Assembly’s first year of the millennium to start the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World in 1997. This resulted in the celebration of One Day in Peace and, consequently, Global Family Day. Hence this Day is also known as One Day of Peace and Sharing . Thus, the first day of the year has been made as a day for recognizing how peace is promoted both locally and globally. The UN General Assembly’s declaration made in 1997 started with the theme “One Day of Peace” which was then observed on the first day of every year.

Global Family Day

A formal invitation to all the United Nations member states was sent in 1999. It encourages them in participating and celebrating the first day of each year as a unique time in promoting peace and sharing . Irrespective of language, religion, country, race, or political affiliation, Global Family Day encourages all people to share their love with each other and spend this time in peace. Originally the Day was supported by Linda Grover’s efforts in the United States to promote the date. The efforts include a 1996 children’s book by Steve Diamond and Robert Alan Silverstein named One Day In Peace, January 1, 2000. The book was later translated into 22 languages. The United Nations General Assembly in 2001 established this Day as an annual event.

International Family Day Speech

Address by the MEC for Social Development Northern Cape , Mr. Alvin Botes , on the occasion of the International Day for Families , at Concordia , Namakwa

15 May 2013 Programme Director MEC for……. Members of the Media Distinguished Guests Ladies and Gentlemen Good Morning , Goeie More , It is a privilege for me to address you on the commemoration of the International Day for Families , which gives us a platform to acknowledge the important role played by Families in society. May 15 is celebrated as the International Day of the Family. This day highlights the importance of families. It aims at fostering equality, bringing a fuller sharing of domestic responsibilities and employment opportunities.   The family is the basic and natural unit of society, which plays a critical role of nurturing and caring for individual family members, from children, to youth, men, women, people living with disabilities and the older generation. Families bear the primary responsibility for the development, education and socialization of children. They provide material and non-material care and support to their members and are a backbone of intergenerational solidarity and social cohesion.   Celebrating the International Day for Families also brings into focus the importance of family solidarity wherein members of the family work together to sustain the unit through challenges, trials and tribulations. We all know is not easy living with one's family. With so many oddballs that make up a family, it is tough to find common ground. Yet, a family is the most refined of all human relationships. Mother, sister, brother, father, and you may make up a family. But what ties you all together is that invisible umbilical cord... the cord of love and sacrifice. It is cord that should never be cut as it is the cord that binds the family together. The theme for this year’s event is Advancing Social Integration and Intergenerational solidarity within families and the communities , which is precisely about advancing all generations in a family and keeping that cord uncut and solid so that we can feed from one another. Relationships between children and their parents, parents and grandparents, or children and their grandparents are called intergenerational relationships Intergenerational solidarity mostly relates to reciprocal care, support and exchange of material and non-material resources between family members, typically younger and older generations. The demographic transition, changes in family structures and living arrangements as well as migration often negatively impact intergenerational relations and solidarity. Intergenerational programs are defined as activities that increase cooperation, interaction or exchange between any two generations. These programs purposefully bring together people of different age groups in ongoing, mutually beneficial, planned activities, designed to achieve specified program goals. At the same time, Intergenerational programs provide a supportive environment conducive to supporting emotional, intellectual, and social growth and physical activity. The concept of intergenerational solidarity and programmes need to be emphasized within our province in order to promote social cohesion amongst families and communities. On the 27 March 2013, we launched the Intergenerational Pilot Project in this very district of Namakwa in Calvinia at the Sonskyn Service Centre. It is a project that brings the youth, adults and older persons together. Inter-generational programs are defined as activities that bring together individuals of different ages as partners to explore, study, and work towards a shared goal, which foster cooperation and promote interaction among generations including children, youth and older persons. These programs can be youth serving older persons, older persons serving youth, or youth and older adults serving together. Research was conducted by the youth of Calvinia West, after they had been trained by the National office, to determine the needs of older persons in the area. The findings highlighted the need for inter-generational programmes, as well as economic empowerment programmes. Ten beneficiaries, consisting of five older persons and youth each were identified and trained to implement a catering business, Sunshine Catering Sunshine Catering is now ready to start operating as a fully-fledged catering business. As a next step they will register on the service provider databases of the different Government Departments to access catering opportunities, as well as functions within the community. My appeal to the community of Concordia is for follow in the footsteps of Calvinia and see how a similar project can be initiated to enhance the relationship between all the generations of Concordia and surrounding areas. The Benefits of Inter-Generational programs for the community are:

  • Inspires Collaboration : as it can unite community members to take action on public policy issues that address human needs across the generations.
  • Expands Services : Intergenerational community service programs can expand the level of services to meet more needs and address more issues.
  • Maximises Financial Resources : When groups represent young and old, funders are more likely to respond positively because they can see broad-based community support. Intergenerational programs can save money and stretch scarce resources by sharing sites and/or resources.

The Youth will benefit in the following ways:

  • Enhances Social Skills : Interaction with older persons enhances communication skills, promotes self-esteem, develops problem-solving abilities, and fosters friendships across generations. Positive attitudes are developed regarding sense of purpose and community service.
  • Increases Stability : Youth gain positive role models with whom they can interact on a regular basis. Older persons as volunteers help to provide youth with consistency through mentoring and coaching.

Benefits for Older Persons are:

  • Enhances Socialisation : Older persons remain productive, useful, and contributing members of society. They increase interaction with youth and engage more with one another to prevent isolation in later years.
  • Stimulates Learning: Older persons learn new innovations and technologies from their younger counterparts.

GREEN PAPER ON FAMILIES The Green Paper for families has been developed and it is in the process of finalization. The aim of the Green Paper is to promote family life and strengthen families in South Africa through adopting a holistic approach to families as compared to other policies or legislation that are primarily focusing on individuals. It promotes the provision of integrated, coordinated and comprehensive social welfare services through collaborative partnership with government departments , NGO’s and civil society to address the diverse needs of families. The policy framework further advocates for the establishment of a coordinating, implementing and monitoring structure which will ensure that the best interest of the (3) groups  that is the  individual, the family and the community are achieved. Through the Green  Paper on Families, we also seek to achieve the following:

  • Reaffirm relevance of a family as a critical unit in society.
  • To maximise the participation and commitment of all sectors in strengthening family life.
  • To ensure balance between work and family life.
  • To ensure that families have access to services.
  • Strengthening families so that they can be able to take care of children.

It is against this background that the Provincial Family Services Forum was launched on the 6 March 2013.The overall functions of the forum is as follows:

  • Promote networking ,joint program planning, implementation and monitor activities
  • Ensure mainstreaming of family issues
  • Advocate for families through the dissemination of information and education
  • Support , monitor and evaluate  the implementation of the White Paper
  • Facilitate the establishment of structures at district level
  • Guide and direct process of ensuring that services reach the designated families.

The strengthening of families and communities to foster social cohesion in the Province will only be realized through the functional and successful intersectoral coordinating structure. Ladies and Gentleman One of the major challenges facing families is the problem of domestic violence , especially gender based violence. We need to address the violence within our families and be good role models for our children. Violence against women, many of whom are mothers, remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in our country. It has far-reaching consequences – endangering the lives of women and children and harming families and communities. Preventing family violence should be a key priority for all of us. One of the problems confronting families today is substance abuse. The increase and the abuse of methamphetamine tik (known as nyaope in townships) destroy the moral fibre of our society. Drug abuse is a major contributor to family and social disintegration. It is incumbent on government, with the collaboration of civil society, to do its utmost to shield families from this scourge. In this regard we will continue working closely with civil society and communities to implement the Northern Cape Anti Substance Abuse Strategy that was launched in June 2012 and encourage community members to participate in substance abuse forums. It is our priority to work together with you to prevent drug abuse and the harm that drugs cause to families and society in general.

So, today as we celebrate the International Day for Families we have to ask ourselves: what have we done to support families confronted by all these challenges? Government, in its review of the past nineteen years has addressed these questions and we are proud of what we have achieved by working in partnerships with civil society organisations, organised labour, the business sector, traditional leaders, and international agencies.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is timely that we celebrate the International Day for Families at a time when we will be observing the Child Protection Week in the last week of May . The Department of Social Development introduced Child Protection Week to raise awareness about the need for child protection as well as to mobilise all sectors of society to respond to social ills facing children. Since 1997 Child Protection Week has become an annual campaign of government to educate and mobilise communities to put children first.. Child abuse is one of the most serious social problems, if not the most serious one, in South Africa today, and the government is open to and supportive of any initiatives that will prevent harm to children.

Let me remind you that child abuse not only affects the individual child, it affects the whole community. Along with the physical and emotional costs to individual children, the social and economic costs to our community associated with child abuse and neglect, whilst not always immediately obvious, are enormous.

Many of you would be aware that the Department of Social Development has established the national Child Protection Register, which is used to record information about the abuse, neglect or exploitation of children. The information is used for planning and resources allocation purposes to prevent the abuse and deliberate neglect of children and protect children on provincial and municipal levels. I am appealing to all parents, teachers, social workers and everyone who has the interest of children at heart to make use of the register to report incidents of abuse.

Ladies and Gentlemen

With reference to the Balelapa Household Profiling report (2010), families in Namaqua are confronted with a number of challenges which impact negatively on their functionality. The challenges were identified as follows: substance abuse, child/youth headed households, HIV/Aids, poverty, high  unemployment rate due to lack of business opportunities, some children between 7-15yrs  do not attend school, limited access to health facilities and lack of skills due to poor educational background. Families also experience financial constraints as most of them solely depend on social grants to provide for their basic needs. Issues of crime and violence within families cannot also not be ignored as they are exacerbated by the socioeconomic status of families. All these identified social ills have profoundly affected the well being of family members and consequently placed an added burden on children. Some parents spend most of their time at work and thus cannot exercise their parental obligation. Discipline within families is also a challenge especially for parents who work long hours. The main focus of the Department of Social Development is to promote social cohesion amongst individuals, families and communities through the implementation of coordinated and integrated family preservation services by all stakeholders to address and eradicate these social ills from our communities , therefore building a caring society together and ensuring a better life for all.

We want to use this important occasion to re-emphasise the need for families and communities to support and protect people with disabilities. People with disabilities are members of families who are mostly neglected in terms of care and understanding. These family members sometimes are ostracised by their siblings such that they end up living in absolute poverty due to lack of socio-economic support.

Communities must promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. People with disabilities form part of families and communities and they have a right to be heard, to be understood and to evolve like everyone else. The marginalisation of people with disabilities limits their potential to contribute to society.

In conclusion, we call on all sectors of society to work with us in a quest to build strong families. These efforts must start with programmes to strengthen families by protecting vulnerable members of society such as children, women, people with disabilities and older persons.

Working together, we can do more to create a caring society. I thank you , dankie

In Glasgow, Scotland, people take part in a Fridays for Future demonstration for climate action, led by youth climate activists and organized on the sidelines of the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).

Protect future generations from global decisions made today

Ensuring that world leaders consider the impact their actions will have on the billions yet to be born this century, whilst addressing the inclusion of young people in important national and global decision-making, are central to the UN’s landmark  Summit of the Future .

In 2025, the Ministry for the Future, a powerful global organization advocating for the rights of the generations to come, convinces bankers and economists to introduce wide-ranging policies that finally reverse the effects of the devastating climate crisis and bring about a fairer, cleaner global economy.

If that sounds like science fiction, that’s because it is: this is the plot of Kim Stanley Robinson’s influential novel The Ministry for the Future , which imagines such a body being established as part of the 2015  Paris Agreement on climate change.

But maybe it’s not as outlandish as it might seem: this September, at UN Headquarters, the fate of future generations will take centre stage during the Summit of the Future , a landmark event at which world leaders will pledge to safeguard a better future for all.

Youth participants take part in International Youth Day at UN Headquarters.

As part of an overarching Pact for the Future, due to be adopted at the Summit, a  Declaration on Future Generations is expected to be gavelled through. Alongside commitments to end inequality, bring about quality education for all and ensure long-term planning, this Declaration proposes a novel addition to the UN, a Special Envoy for Future Generations, who would be tasked with advocating across the UN system for better long-term thinking, and sharing the findings of the  UN Futures Lab , the organization’s research arm.

But with so many people facing hardship right now, why is the UN considering setting up a new office to look after the interests of the 10 billion people who are yet to be born this century?

In fact, concern for future generations is enshrined in the UN Charter , the founding document of the Organization, written in 1945. Subsequently, a raft of international agreements has noted the importance of keeping in mind the needs of our descendants and, on top of that, almost 400 General Assembly resolutions have explicitly referenced future generations.

What’s more, the very concept of sustainable development is defined as meeting “the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” but UN Secretary-General António Guterres has argued that we “violate this principle daily”.

Young people need a seat at the table

Advancing a renewed focus on the future, Mr. Guterres has been careful to point out that this does not equate to a neglect of the needs of those alive today. Indeed, “upholding the rights and meeting the needs of those alive today is a precondition for securing a better future”, he  writes .

The UN chief has also  made it clear that young people – who are often told that they are the future, which implies that they will have to sort out the mess created by the leaders of today – “should not bear the burden of advocating for our descendants, but they are deserving of a separate and dedicated place at the table.”

Making sure that the youth of today have a greater say in decisions that affect them has been at the forefront of UN policies for more than a decade. Over nearly a decade, the UN Youth Envoy worked to coordinate the inclusion of youth voices at major international events and helps the entire UN system to work with and for young people.

Building on this legacy, in December 2023, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed the first-ever Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, who leads the newly established United Nations Youth Office and will be responsible for strengthening youth engagement in areas such as sustainable development, human rights, and peace and security

A day of youth action

Felipe Paullier, formerly the Director General of the National Youth Institute of Uruguay, is the first incumbent. He says that he is keen to make sure that the Summit of the Future advances many issues that are important to young people.

The voices of young people will bookend the Summit: a youth-led  Action Day in the iconic General Assembly Hall on Friday 20 September, will feature activists, celebrities, musical performances and dialogues involving Mr. Paullier and Mr. Guterres; on Monday 23 September, an interactive dialogue will take place in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, on how to enhance the global system for current and future generations.
