We strive to provide positive and engaging work experiences so you can excel and have a fulfilling career.
Health and Insurance Coverage
Our staff is our most important asset. Providing you with the healthcare and insurance benefits you need is key. Through Be Well@Westat, we provide eligible employees a range of packages that help them meet their unique needs.
Health Care
A healthy you is a productive you, so we provide a range of providers and options within those choices so that you can find a health plan that works best for you, including HMOs, traditional health plans, and high-deductible plans. Do you have a preferred provider? Are you looking for flexibility in options? Westat has a range of health care selections for you.
Dental Care
Not all companies offer dental care plans, but we do. We recognize that dental health is tied to physical health and well-being, so we provide you with health care plans with dental care, as well as individual dental plans, so that you have the leverage to get the care you want.
Vision Care
Our health care plans provide discounted vision services, but we also provide other vision care programs where you can expand your options to more providers, including private practices and other retailers. Some of our options expand to online retailers so you can focus on the exact frames or eye care options for that discerning look.
Health Savings and Spending Accounts
Get pre-tax savings by opting in for health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts, depending on the health care plan you choose. These options are great ways to build up health care expense reserves as well as meet those expenses throughout the year or over time.
Other Insurance
Accident Insurance
Accidents happen and by their very nature are unexpected and may cause significant expense if there is a serious injury. To help, we provide accident insurance plans that help cover out-of-pocket medical expenses as well as non-medical expenses that help cover travel costs to see doctors as you recover.
Critical Illness Insurance
A catastrophic illness, like cancer or a stroke, can be a significant financial burden. It’s something you don’t plan for, but you can plan to handle…just in case. Westat offers a plan to help you with medical expenses for unexpected critical illnesses.
Disability Insurance
We offer basic long-term disability at no cost; that’s right, at no cost to you. This insurance can provide you the peace of mind against the unforeseen, like a disability, illness, injury, or the birth of a child leaves you unable to work. Westat also offers employees the option to elect short-term disability insurance.
Life Insurance
We’ve got you covered. Westat offers basic life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment coverage at no cost to you…again, at no cost to you. You can opt to add supplemental life insurance to fit your needs. In case of your spouse’s or domestic partner’s unexpected death, this benefit can be helpful to those left behind.
Legal and ID Theft Insurance
With so much of our personal information available on the web, we’re vulnerable to scams and ID theft. Our staff can choose individual or family coverage to help work through these unforeseen and costly issues that could drain us emotionally and financially.
Pet Insurance
Our pets are important members of our families, and we want to keep them safe and healthy, too. We offer insurance for cats and dogs through ASPCA© Pet Health Insurance to help offset the cost of keeping all family members, including these 4-legged ones, healthy.
Leave Programs for Salaried Staff
Vacation Leave
Taking time off to recharge your batteries is important to your personal health as well as maintaining the quality of your work. You’ll accrue vacation hours every pay period based on your grade and years of service.
If you’re sick, we want you to take time off to get well. And sick leave provides income protection when you or your family member is ill, disabled, or receiving medical care.
Family and Medical Leave
Life happens. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protects your job so that you can focus on important family needs like taking leave to care for a new baby, adopting a child, taking care of yourself or a family member with a serious health condition, qualifying exigencies related to the foreign deployment of a military member, or taking care of a servicemember with a serious injury or illness.
Parental Leave
We recognize the importance of early bonding with children. Westat offers parental leave so you can be home at those crucial early days of your family’s new arrival and not worry about losing ground at work. This benefit applies to fostering and adopting children, too.
Retirement Plan
Building your financial security.
We are proud employee owners of our company. We recognize that our individual efforts and commitment make a difference in the overall success of the company, fueling the continued high value of our work to clients and society. Each year since 1977, through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), eligible employee participants are allocated stock. Every day you work at Westat, you’re recognized for your commitment with this unique deferred compensation program.
Our defined contribution 401(k) provides you with tax-deferred, retirement-oriented benefits. Westat matches employee contributions up to 5%. With a 401(k), you can make pre-tax and/or Roth contributions and build that safety net, a cushion for your future.
Career Development
We are committed to providing an environment where you can fully develop throughout your career and pursue the work that interests you. The range of work is invigorating. Whether it’s contributing to research to ensure the safety of the blood supply, supporting clinical trials to eradicate chronic and infectious diseases, or supporting educators to improve student success, you can do it at Westat.

Our Career Progression Framework program helps you outline your professional growth goals with career advancement opportunities that align to your skills and interests. We provide you the flexibility to navigate your career, whether you are just starting out, in mid-career, or focused on executive roles. Additionally, the project will involve collecting site-specific parameters in the field for testing, which will inform simulations in the California Landfill Methane Inventory Model (CALMIM). The successful candidate will join a research team, headed by Dr. Ramin Yazdani, to conduct on-site methane oxidation measurement and other field parameters at three selected Californian sites across different seasons, as part of a two-year research endeavor sponsored by the California Air Resources Board. This scholar may also contribute to other research projects related to landfill emissions measurements.
Field data and methane oxidation data will be collected on three distinct cover types at three landfill sites over one year, focusing on areas under gas vacuum and uncontrolled sections. Analyses will compare emission estimates from the model using default and site-specific input parameters, quantitatively assess emissions across varying cover types and materials, and propose model enhancements for better alignment with field conditions. The project will also gather and scrutinize landfill gas well data, monitor barometric pressure changes, measure the gas pressure gradient at the interface of waste and cover soil, and document emissions measurements to assess the effectiveness of automated gas collection systems in reducing emissions.
The appointed individual will be primarily responsible for setting up equipment, such as flux chambers, collecting soil and gas samples for on-site and laboratory analyses, recording field measurements, and maintaining field instruments. They will transport equipment to sites, design and execute laboratory and field experiments aligned with the project's objectives, calibrate gas analyzers and monitoring sensors, and compile research data. They will process and interpret this data and are expected to produce project reports, technical publications, and presentations.
Qualifications: Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field, and should not exceed three years of post-degree research experience. The individual must have the capability to independently carry out air emission measurements and modeling. They should also have a robust background in waste management technologies, including anaerobic digestion, aerobic composting, as well as expertise in data processing and statistical analysis.
Additional essential qualifications include outstanding oral and written English communication skills, a collaborative attitude, a track record of high-quality peer-reviewed scientific publications, and the ability to meet deadlines and work autonomously with excellence. The candidate must exhibit strong time management and record-keeping abilities, and must have or be able to obtain a valid U.S. driver's license.
Preference will be given to applicants with hands-on experience with instrumentation for measuring gas emissions using either static or dynamic flux chambers, proficiency in MATLAB and LabVIEW software, and experience in emission modeling.
Hiring Process: Application reviews will commence immediately and will remain ongoing until the position is secured. Initial interviews will be conducted via videoconference.
Compensation: We provide a competitive wage plus extensive benefits, such as health insurance, retirement plans, paid vacation and sick days, and supportive career development in scientific research. Selected candidates will be expected to disseminate their research findings at scientific conferences and in professional circles.
The University of California, Davis is a proactive affirmative action and equal opportunity institution dedicated to fostering an environment that upholds equality of opportunity and values diversity.
How to Apply: Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, samples of pertinent publications, and the names and contact details for three references via email.
Contact: Dr. Ramin Yazdani, [email protected] Air Quality Research Center University of California, Davis 1 Shields Ave. Davis, CA 95616
Start Date: The position will start on June 1, 2024, or thereafter.
Length of Appointment: The term may last up to 2 years, contingent upon performance and funding.

Fact Sheet on FTC’s Proposed Final Noncompete Rule
- Competition
- Office of Policy Planning
- Bureau of Competition
The following outline provides a high-level overview of the FTC’s proposed final rule :
- Specifically, the final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition—and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act—for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers after the effective date.
- Fewer than 1% of workers are estimated to be senior executives under the final rule.
- Specifically, the final rule defines the term “senior executive” to refer to workers earning more than $151,164 annually who are in a “policy-making position.”
- Reduced health care costs: $74-$194 billion in reduced spending on physician services over the next decade.
- New business formation: 2.7% increase in the rate of new firm formation, resulting in over 8,500 additional new businesses created each year.
- This reflects an estimated increase of about 3,000 to 5,000 new patents in the first year noncompetes are banned, rising to about 30,000-53,000 in the tenth year.
- This represents an estimated increase of 11-19% annually over a ten-year period.
- The average worker’s earnings will rise an estimated extra $524 per year.

3. feelings about the 2024 race for president, table of contents.
- The state of the 2024 presidential race
- Other findings: Biden’s job approval ticks up, Trump’s election-related criminal charges
- About half of voters (49%) say they have given a lot of thought to the candidates who are running in the 2024 presidential election – nearly identical to the share saying this at a similar point four years ago (51%).
- But the share who say “it really matters who wins” in November is 5 percentage points lower than it was in April 2020.
- And most voters say that if it were up to them, they would replace at least one of the two likely nominees (Joe Biden and Donald Trump). About half say they’d replace both Biden and Trump on the ballot.
Attention to the candidates
Today, Trump and Biden supporters are about equally likely to say they’ve given a lot of thought to the presidential candidates. About half of Trump’s and Biden’s supporters say they have given a lot of thought to their options.
In April 2020, about half of voters said they had given “a lot” of thought to the candidates. But Biden’s supporters – fresh off the heels of a competitive primary – were more likely than Trump’s supporters to say they had thought a lot about the candidates (58% vs. 48%).
Does it matter who wins?
Today, 69% of voters say “it really matters who wins” the presidential election. Just 8% say it doesn’t really matter who wins, and roughly a third fall somewhere in between. However, the share of voters who say it really matters is 5 points lower than it was in April 2020, when 74% of voters said it really mattered. Both Trump and Biden supporters are lower on this measure today than four years ago.
What if voters could change the presidential ballot?
Though both Biden and Trump have received enough delegates in the 2024 presidential primaries to secure their respective party’s nominations for president , most voters say they would like to replace at least one of them on the ballot.
- 49% of voters say that, if they had the ability to decide the major party candidates for the 2024 presidential election, they would replace both Trump and Biden with different candidates.
- 16% say they would keep Biden but replace Trump with a different Republican.
- A similar share (18%) say they would keep Trump but replace Biden with a different Democrat.
- Another 15% of voters say they would keep the contest as is.
Demographic and political differences
There are demographic differences in desired changes to the ballot. To some extent, these are associated with voting preferences.
Biden supporters are much more likely than Trump supporters to say they’d replace both candidates if they could (62% of Biden’s supporters say this, compared with 35% of Trump’s). In contrast, Trump’s voters are much more likely than Biden’s to say they’d keep both(27% of Trump supporters vs. 4% of Biden supporters). Roughly similar shares (about a third each) of each candidate’s supporters say they would keep only their candidate and replace the other.
Younger voters are more likely than older voters to desire ballot changes. Roughly two-thirds of voters under 30 say they would replace both Biden and Trump on the 2024 ballot. This compares with a narrower majority of those ages 30 to 49 (54%) and smaller shares of those 50 to 64 (46%) and those 65 and older (40%).
The gap between younger and older voters is far wider among Biden’s backers:
- Nearly three-quarters of Biden supporters under 50 (73%) say they would replace both candidates. Among Biden supporters ages 50 and older, about half say they would replace both Biden and Trump (53%). In both age groups, most of those who do not want to replace both candidates say they would keep only Biden.
- Among Trump supporters, 38% of those under 50 would replace both, compared with 33% of those 50 and older. Older Trump supporters are roughly twice as likely as younger Trump supporters to say they’d keep both candidates on the ballot (32% vs. 18%). Older Trump backers are more likely than younger ones to say they’d keep Trump but replace Biden (41% vs. 33%).
Among each candidate’s supporters, those with a four-year college degree are more likely than those with less education to say they would replace both candidates if they could.
How important is it for the losing candidate to publicly acknowledge the winner?
Most voters continue to say it is at least somewhat important for the losing candidate to publicly acknowledge the winner as the legitimate president of the country.
Over the past eight years, a majority of voters – regardless of who they supported for president – have said it was at least somewhat important that the losing candidate in a presidential race acknowledge the winner.
But the degree to which Trump’s supporters have said this is important has shifted over the past eight years. As the 2016 presidential election neared, Trump’s supporters became less likely to say it was important for the losing candidate to concede than they were earlier in the fall: The share who said it was very important for the loser to acknowledge the winner as the legitimate president declined by 20 percentage points between October 2016 and the eve of the November 2016 election.
In the spring of 2020, as Trump ran for reelection, 66% said this was very important.
Today, 44% of Trump’s supporters say it is very important for the losing candidate to concede. This compares with 77% of Biden’s supporters.
While there have been shifts among Clinton and Biden supporters during the same period, these changes have been much more modest. Majorities have said it is very important for the losing candidate to acknowledge the winner.
