Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for applicants from least developed countries and vulnerable states, as classified by the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), in the Commonwealth, for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) provides the UK government scholarship scheme led by international development objectives. It operates within the framework of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) and offers a vivid demonstration of the UK’s enduring commitment to the Commonwealth. By attracting individuals with outstanding talent and identifiable potential from all backgrounds and supporting them to become leaders and innovators on returning to their home countries, the CSC’s work combines sustainable development with the UK national interest and provides opportunities for international partnerships and collaboration.

Purpose: Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) , Commonwealth PhD scholarships contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by supporting research that will have a developmental impact. They also enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increase institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international applicants and encouraging links and collaboration, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Intended beneficiaries: Commonwealth PhD scholarships are for high-quality graduates who have the potential to undertake world-class research of a developmental nature and to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries.

These scholarships are offered under the six  CSC Development themes .

Applications for Commonwealth PhD scholarships for the 202 5 /2 6 academic year are now open . The deadline for submitting an application is 16:00 hours BST (15:00 GMT) on 1 5 October 202 4 . The s cholarships are for study in the UK beginning in September/October 2 02 5 .

Applicants are advised to complete and submit applications as early as possible, as the online application system will be very busy in the days leading up to the application deadline.

As well as applying to the CSC, applicants must apply to a nominator.

There are three types of nominator invited to participate in the PhD scholarship programme:

  • National nominating agencies  – this is the main route of application.

Participating n ominators put forward an agreed number of candidates to the CSC for consideration . The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships.

Each nominator oversees its own selection process and may have additional eligibility criteria. Applicants must check with the nominator for their specific advice and rules for applying, and their own eligibility criteria.

Nominators may set their own closing dates for applications. They will nominate candidates to the CSC in December 2024.

Selections are made from the pool of nominations. Candidates are asked to note that a nomination is no guarantee of selection.

Applicants can expect to hear the outcome of their applications by July 2025. We will contact all applicants by email and they should ensure all folders of their email accounts are monitored, including junk mail and spam folders. A scholarship offer may be withdrawn if a candidate is emailed but does not respond within a specified time.

Applications must include supporting documentation to be eligible.

The references and supporting statements must be uploaded to the application system by the deadline for applications and we are unable to accept references and supporting statements any other way or after this date.

Applicants must upload the following documents with the application:

  • Proof that they are a citizen or have refugee status in an eligible Commonwealth country: a copy of a valid passport (or national ID card) showing a photograph, date of birth, and country of citizenship.
  • Full transcripts detailing all higher education qualifications, including to-date transcripts for any courses currently being studied, with certified translations if not in English. Where any transcripts are missing or do not include all pages, the application will be considered ineligible.

Applications will be considered ineligible if any of the required documentation is not included by the closing date.

The CSC will not accept supporting documentation submitted outside the online application system.

When completing the references, referees should be asked to comment as fully as possible on the applicant, keeping in mind the following points for inclusion, as appropriate:

  • How long, and in what capacity, the referee has known the applicant.
  • The referee’s views on the applicant’s suitability for the proposed Scholarship and the need for the particular subject of study in the UK.

Selection Process and criteria

Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria:

For further details, see the Commonwealth Scholarships selection criteria .

Applicants should note the criteria carefully and link their answers in the application form to each point listed.

Scholarships are tenable at any approved UK university or higher education institution with which the CSC has a part-funding agreement for a specific programme of research for 36 months of full-time study only. For the full list, see here: cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk/uk-universities

Scholarships are to obtain one degree; funding will not be extended to enable candidates to complete a qualification in addition to or higher than that for which the selection was made.

Scholarships are made in respect of full-time study only and no other course of study may be undertaken at the same time.

The CS C does not support four-year PhDs.

The CSC does not provide new direct financial or promotional support for the fossil fuel energy sector overseas, defined as the extraction, production, transportation, refining and marketing of crude oil, natural gas or thermal coal, as well as any fossil-fuel fired power plants.

Applicants must make clear in the application which qualification they are applying for. This will enable the CSC to consider the application in the correct category. Applications which do not make this clear may be considered ineligible.

Applicants are advised to list three universities and supervisors that they think are the most appropriate for their study, in order of preference, and to explain their reasons. This is important because the CSC will not change the university or supervisor (or the order of preference) of a provisionally selected candidate after the point of selection, unless exceptional information becomes available that could not have been foreseen at the time of application.

The CSC will make the final decision on institution of study, and reserves the right to overrule any preferences indicated by the candidate. The CSC will consider the suitability of the course and its value for money when deciding on any overrule.

Applicants must take the necessary steps to apply for admission to their preferred universities in advance of their scholarship application. Many courses have strict admission deadlines and candidates should check admission requirements carefully when applying. If an applicant is selected for a scholarship and has not applied and been accepted for a course, it may not be possible to proceed with the scholarship.

Applicants must provide a supporting statement for a named supervisor from at least one of the UK universities to which they are applying. Details of what the supporting statement should include are outlined in the supporting documentation section. Applicants are strongly advised to provide a supporting statement from a supervisor at the first choice university. If not, the CSC reserves the right to select for placement at another university for which a statement is provided.

Each scholarship provides:

  • Approved airfare from the Scholar’s home country to the UK and return at the end of the award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before the award is confirmed).
  • Approved tuition fees: full fees are covered by agreement between the CSC and the UK university, and Scholars are not liable to pay for any part of the tuition fee.

If a Scholar shares that they have a disability, a full assessment of their needs and eligibility for additional financial support will be offered by the CSC.

The CSC’s family allowances are intended to be only a contribution towards the cost of maintaining a Scholar’s family in the UK. The true costs are likely to be considerably higher, and Scholars must be able to supplement these allowances to support any family members who accompany them to the UK.

For more information, see the current Handbook for Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows .

Please note that the conditions outlined in the Handbook are subject to change.

A Commonwealth Scholarship covers fees, approved fares, and personal maintenance. Other scholarships, awards, or bursaries that cover the same costs may not be held concurrently.

For the CSC to administer the application effectively and efficiently after submission, it will be necessary to create a record in the applicant’s name. If they apply for an award to the CSC, their details will be kept on file. Basic anonymised demographic data for all applicants will be kept for analytical research. The CSC is committed to protecting personal information and to being transparent about the information we are collecting about applicants and what we do with it. To find out more, see our privacy notice .

Applicant’s personal information will be used to conduct necessary due diligence checks to CSC’s satisfaction, before CSC proceeds with any type of formal agreement or contractual relationship. In most cases, the due diligence checks will be straightforward, however further information may be requested, so we ask for full co-operation to speed up the process.

If an applicant does not agree to personal data being used for the purpose of conducting due diligence, unfortunately CSC will not be able to proceed further with the application process.

If an application is successful, the CSC will notify the applicant that they have been provisionally selected (selected for an award subject to the CSC agreeing terms of admission to the university) at which point they will be a provisional scholarship candidate.

The CSC does not require any applicants to take an IELTS (English language) test.

The CSC will not be able to offer a scholarship if it would contravene the terms and conditions of another scholarship previously held.

When terms of admission to the university have been agreed, the CSC will provide a Notification of Award (formal offer of a scholarship).

When all conditions of the Notification of Award have been met, the CSC will provide a formal Confirmation of Award.

Candidates will be required to submit a Health and Disability Form  before the Confirmation of Award can be issued.

Candidates will be required to sign an undertaking to return to their home country as soon as possible after the end of the award.

Candidates are expected to start the award on the date stated in the Notification of Award.

If a candidate requires a Student visa to come to the UK to study, they must meet all relevant immigration requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration. They should check the GOV.UK website for updated information.

All UK immigration regulations are set by UK Visas and Immigration and are subject to change. The CSC has no control over these regulations.

Candidates will be selected for an award based on the plan of study outlined on the application form, which is not expected to change significantly during the award. Any such changes must be agreed by the CSC.

Throughout their award, Scholars are expected to reside in the UK, and must seek approval from the CSC in advance of any overseas travel.

Scholars must not undertake paid employment during the award without approval from the CSC in advance.

Collaboration is a feature of doctoral research. The CSC expects that participants in collaborative projects will develop a collaborative agreement to clarify the contributions and rights of each partner. The CSC will not get involved in negotiating an exploitation agreement but will need to be assured that an arrangement acceptable to all parties exists. Arrangements should be made to identify, protect, and value any arising intellectual property and to secure a suitable return to the institution and the investigators through exploitation. The CSC considers the intellectual property ownership to lie initially with the student; however, many universities have their own locally applicable policy. In many cases, it is in the best interest of a student for ownership to be vested with the university, which will have greater negotiating powers and will be likely to be able to seek the best returns in any exploitation agreement. Award holders are expected to notify the CSC when CSC-funded intellectual property is exploited.

The CSC will consider a request to extend a Scholar’s leave to remain in the UK after their award only if they wish to move from Master’s to PhD study. Strict conditions will apply.

The CSC cannot provide a letter of support or permission for Scholars to remain in or return to the UK after the award to enable them to work or undertake postdoctoral study.

The following are not eligible to apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship or Fellowship; an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee of the Government of the United Kingdom; or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities or the British Council; or a Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioner, former Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioner or a relative of a Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioner. Former employees of the organisations listed above are eligible to apply three years after ceasing their employment with them.

In line with the UK Bribery Act 2010, any applicant convicted of bribery will be banned from reapplying for a Commonwealth Scholarship or Fellowship for a period of up to five years.

Applicants are expected to adhere to the CSC’s Code of Conduct for award holders and the Disciplinary Policy and Procedure .

An award may be terminated at any time for reasons of unsatisfactory conduct, progress, or attendance, or if registration is suspended or terminated by the university for any reason.

The CSC is committed to administering and managing its scholarships and fellowships in a fair and transparent manner. For more information, see the CSC Anti-Fraud Policy and Procedure at and the FCDO guidance on reporting fraud .

The CSC is committed proactively to safeguard and promote the welfare of our beneficiaries, and to protect its staff, Commissioners, beneficiaries and all those with whom the CSC comes into contact. The CSC requires staff, members of the Commission, applicants for and recipients of CSC awards and suppliers to act consistently with its requirements for safeguarding. Applicants should note the  CSC Safeguarding Policy which sets out the obligation for staff, members of the Commission, applicants for and recipients of CSC awards and suppliers to act consistently with its requirements for safeguarding.  Any safeguarding concerns should be reported to the Commission at:   [email protected]

All conditions of award are subject to UK local law and practices and are subject to change by the CSC.

Financial Assistance for Indian Students

For Indian students, pursuing a PhD in the UK can be tough financially because of the high tuition fees and living costs. But there are lots of ways to get help. Indian students can apply for various financial aid options, including scholarships that cover tuition, living expenses, and other study-related costs. These scholarships can be partial or full and are often based on merit. Students can also get grants from both the British and Indian governments, as well as from trusts and specific university programs. Getting this financial support is really important because it lets students focus on their studies and research without worrying about money.

Tuition Fees and Living Expenses

The cost of pursuing a PhD in the UK typically involves two major financial components: tuition fees and living expenses. Tuition fees for international students, including those from India, can vary widely across different universities and fields of study. These fees generally fall into the range of £15,000 to £30,000 per year, depending on the institution and program. On top of tuition, living expenses—which include accommodation, groceries, transportation, and miscellaneous costs—amount to an average of £1,000 to £1,500 per month. Scholarships intended for Indian students often target these financial aspects, with many covering the entirety of tuition fees and providing an additional amount to offset living costs.

Monthly Stipend

To help manage the cost of living while studying in the UK, some scholarships provide a monthly stipend to Indian doctoral students. This stipend is designed to assist with everyday expenses such as food, housing, academic materials, and transportation. Depending on the scholarship, the monthly stipend can vary but usually falls between £1,000 and £1,500. This financial support plays a crucial role in ensuring that students can maintain a reasonable standard of living, allowing them to concentrate on their academic and research endeavors without having to seek employment.

Health Insurance Coverage

Healthcare in the UK can be costly, and therefore, health insurance is an incredibly important consideration for Indian students. Fortunately, many PhD scholarships offer health insurance coverage as part of their financial assistance package. This coverage generally includes the National Health Service (NHS) surcharge, which grants students access to the UK’s healthcare system in the same capacity as a UK resident. This inclusion safeguards students from incurring additional medical expenses and provides peace of mind regarding health and wellbeing throughout their doctoral journey.

Indian Government Schemes

The Indian government has initiated several schemes to support students who wish to pursue their higher education overseas, including the UK. Schemes such as the National Overseas Scholarship provide financial support to students belonging to certain socio-economic backgrounds for tuition fees, living expenses, and travel. There are also region-specific scholarships and grants available through state governments and other Indian organizations designed to boost international academic exchange. Students should explore these options as they could significantly subsidize the cost of PhD programs abroad, aligning with the government’s vision of promoting global academic excellence among Indian scholars.

We have been issued hundreds of scholarships for Indian students who use our application services. SI-UK’s close relationship with UK universities, combined with our online resources, means all deserving applicants can find the right scholarship to benefit their future.

Types of International Scholarship

- university-specific scholarships.

Several universities in the UK offer scholarship opportunities to Indian students from different fields of study and backgrounds. Universities often fund these scholarships and may require applicants to meet certain criteria, such as academic excellence, financial need, or specific demographic factors.

The University of Bristol offers the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship, which is awarded to international students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement. Similarly, The University of Oxford awards the Reach Oxford Scholarship to students from low-income countries who would not otherwise be able to afford to study at Oxford.

Government-funded scholarships

One of the major reasons why thousands of Indian students aspire to study in the UK is the UK government-funded scholarships. PhD Study in the UK for Indian Students: Things You Must Know

The UK has long been a hotspot for international study and is the fourth most popular destination in the world for Indian students! According to the most recent data from the OECD , over 18,640 postgraduate Indian students were enrolled at a UK university in 2019.

With the relationship between the UK and Indian higher education systems going from strength to strength this number can only be expected to rise. This year, for example, the governments of the two countries announced a landmark agreement to automatically recognise each other’s qualifications. This means it will be easier for Indian students to apply for PhDs at UK universities and to seek work post-graduation!

In this post, we’ll cover everything you need to know if you’re thinking about PhD study in UK, including universities, applications, funding and more.

You can also browse PhD projects in the UK with our course finder.

UK universities

The UK is home to some of the world’s oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions including world-renowned universities of Oxford and Cambridge , founded in 1096 and 1231 respectively.

In total, prospective PhD students can choose from over 150 universities across the country. Most receive funding from the UK government, apart from a small number of private universities, often specialising in certain subjects such as Law or Business.

UK universities are fond of forming alliances. Perhaps the most well-known is the Russell Group , an association of the UK’s top 24 research institutions. It is true that Russell Group universities award the majority of doctorates, so you could certainly do worse than to begin your PhD search here. However, there are plenty of excellent universities that don’t belong to this (or any) alliance – so make sure to keep an open mind!

PhD study in the UK

PhD study in the UK is fairly similar to in most other countries. Under the guidance of an expert supervisor, you’ll work towards an extended dissertation that will make an original contribution to your field. Your PhD will usually take 3-4 years (or 6-8 years if studied part-time).

Most PhD students in the UK are initially registered for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) before being ‘ upgraded ’ to the status of full PhD candidate. Somewhat confusingly, the MPhil is also available as a standalone degree – but this doesn’t bear much resemblance to the first stage of a PhD. You’ll usually spend the MPhil stage of your PhD writing an upgrade report, which will flesh out your research topic and your objectives going forward, before undergoing your upgrade viva.

Most PhDs in the UK are pure research degrees, meaning your main task will be to research and write your thesis according to your own timetable. Don’t think this means you’ll spend all your time locked away amongst precarious towers of books, however! Life as a PhD student also involves many other activities such as undergraduate teaching and presenting at conferences.

Applying for a PhD in the UK

How to apply for a PhD in the UK depends on the type of programme you choose.

If you’re applying for a PhD in Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences , you’ll usually design your own project. This means you’ll set out your objectives in a research proposal which you’ll submit to the university. You’ll also need to find an academic with expertise in your field who is willing to supervise the project.

Most STEM PhDs are advertised projects. This means that the university has already identified a research question and is seeking the right candidate to answer it. You won’t need to write a research proposal in this case – you simply apply for the advertised position as you would a job.

The minimum entry requirement for a PhD in the UK will usually be a Bachelors degree at grade 2:1 or equivalent (which is an Indian CGPA of approximately 7.7). However, some programmes may require a Masters degree – and even if postgraduate study isn’t a requirement, it can often be an advantage.

Due to the recent agreement between the UK and Indian governments, you won’t have to jump through any extra hoops to have your degree(s) recognised in the UK!

PhD fees and funding in the UK for Indian students

A PhD in the UK will generally cost between £15,000 and £20,000 per year for international students. Luckily, there are lots of funding options available to help you cover the costs.

Many advertised projects have funding attached. This often takes the form of full studentships from the UK Research and Innovation Council (UKRI), which cover tuition fees and living costs.

Indian students are eligible to apply for UKRI funding, but it’s important to note that studentships will only cover tuition fees at the domestic rate (which is around £4,000-5,000 per year). This means you’ll have to cover the remainder of your tuition costs via other means.

Full studentships are also very competitive and it’s common for students (especially in Arts and Humanities subjects) to self-fund their PhD.

Here are a few examples of other funding opportunities available for Indian PhD students in the UK:

  • The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation offers scholarships worth up to $100,000 (INR 78 Lakhs) for Indian students doing PhDs abroad.
  • Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are provided by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). They include a tuition fee waiver and a monthly living stipend of £1,113 as well as other benefits.
  • The Charles Wallace India Trust provides various grants for Indian doctoral students in the UK.

Travelling to the UK

All Indian students need a visa to study a PhD in the UK. Applications are made through the new Student Route (previously Tier 4) system. It costs £348 (0.3 Lakh) to apply for a visa from within India, or £475 (0.4 Lakh) if you apply when already in the UK.

There are no longer any coronavirus restrictions for people entering the UK from abroad.

Post-study work visas

The UK is keen to encourage talented international students to stay in the UK post-graduation. The Graduate Route Visa allows PhD students to stay in the UK for three years after finishing their programme. You don’t need to be employed to stay in the UK on the Graduate Route and there are no restrictions on the kind of work you can do.

All Indian qualifications are automatically recognised in the UK, which should also make it easier for you to seek employment.

UK Government immigration update

The new immigration update from the UK Goverment has no effect on the duration of the Graduate Route visa yet. Students currently applying for the visa will continue to get two or three years depending on their qualification. We will keep updating this page with the most up-to-date information on Graduate Route visas.

Students chose the UK as a top destination for studying abroad because of its academic quality and because the British doctorate is recognized and respected worldwide.

Moreover, the British government supports international students by offering a three-year post-study visa and expanding studentships to Indian students undertaking PhDs.

Other prominent features that make studying PhD in the UK a great choice are as follows:

Acclaimed Research Body

The UK academic institutions carry out around 6% of the world’s research and produce nearly 8% of global scientific journals and publications. Besides, the central government bodies assure and maintain the quality of research, with strict reviews and details of which are published online.

Good Exposure

Students will be able to capitalize on the dynamic research base of the universities to build a wide array of academic knowledge and research skills. Furthermore, they will benefit from the strong ties between universities and the industrial sphere.

Secure Financial support

Most universities, private organizations, governmental institutions, and other relevant authorities offer grants and scholarships to Indian students. Each one will have different criteria and benefits. For instance, some might cover specific tuition fees or housing allowances, while others might offer full fee coverage.

A PhD is the highest educational degree pursued in any field by students. Most common PhD courses in the UK are undertaken in Computer Science, Medicine, Engineering, Law, and Sociology.

The PhD programs in the UK often take three to four years for a student to go full-time, while part-time programs are five to six years long. The type of program selected defines the duration of the doctorate as well as the university or institution that is opted for doctorate study.

As such, the best PhD universities in the UK with their annual fee are:

University of Oxford GBP28,650
University of Cambridge GBP33,972
King College London GBP26,640
University College London GBP25,730
Imperial College London GBP26,500

While qualifying criteria differs amongst universities, the given basic eligibility criteria are followed by the majority of the UK institutions:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree with first or upper-second-class honors as well as a master’s degree with a minimum grade of 60% and higher.
  • IELTS certificate with a minimum score of 7 overall or TOEFL with a test score of 90 and a PTE with a 60 score.
  • Research proposal clearly outlines the student’s research interest, motivations, and objectives.
  • Must clear the virtual interview round via Skype or phone for specific research degrees at certain universities.
  • Submit a statement of purpose or personal statement describing their academic and professional pursuits alongside key reasons for pursuing the PhD program.

Pursuing PhD courses in the UK demands sincere commitment and strong perseverance, but the returns are highly beneficial. Although securing opportunities in the academic sector is the go-to route for many students post-PhD, nowadays, several career prospects exist outside the education sector.

More interestingly, a significant number of PhD graduates are working in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, and life science sectors. Some are also looking to work in the R&D fields of the commercial sector, undertaking research for industrial organizations.

All scholarships cover your tuition fees either fully or partially. These are the most common types of scholarships based on funding:

  • Full tuition scholarships: These scholarships cover your tuition fees entirely across the duration of your programme, whether it’s an undergraduate degree, a master’s, or a doctorate. Some of these scholarships may include additional allowances like a monthly stipend, health insurance, and airfare.
  • Partial scholarships: These scholarships cover your tuition fee to an extent—it may be a fixed amount or a percentage of the total cost. Some of these scholarships may include a monthly allowance for your living expenses in addition to partially covering the tuition fee.
  • Renewable scholarships: Usually awarded based on merit when you apply to a university, these scholarships renew annually. You are required to maintain your grades at the required level of performance during each academic year to be eligible for renewal.
  • One-time grants: These are awarded once as funding for a specific academic year or programme. You might look for grants if you are applying for a doctorate or a research fellowship.

Types of scholarships based on awarding body

Different entities award scholarships to deserving students based on varying eligibility criteria. These are the main types of scholarships based on which entity is sponsoring them.

  • Government scholarships: These scholarships are awarded by the government of your home country or the country of your preferred university and cover your tuition fee for a certain time period. Most commonly, these scholarships last three, six, or nine months.
  • University-funded scholarships: Awarded by the university you are applying for, these scholarships are often specific to a particular programme or have multiple eligibility criteria like academic merit and financial need.
  • Private or external scholarships: These are awarded by third-party entities like non-governmental organisations, corporations, cultural or ethnic groups, sports organisations, individual donors, and more, often for a cause these entities care about.

Types of scholarships based on eligibility criteria

When you apply for any scholarship, universities will usually evaluate your academic performance first but depending on the awarding body or type of funding, the eligibility criteria may differ. Here’s a breakdown of scholarships based on different eligibility criteria.

  • Merit-based scholarships: These scholarships are awarded for talent, either academic or extracurricular. You may be eligible for a merit-based scholarship if you have excellent grades or show exceptional potential in fields like research, fine arts, or sports.
  • Need-based scholarships: These scholarships prioritise students with economic disadvantages. To qualify, you may need to show proof of economic hardship alongside excellent academic or extracurricular performance.
  • Programme-specific scholarship: Unique to a specific programme or course, these scholarships are often automatically awarded to students with outstanding academic performance as you apply for the course.
  • Location-specific scholarships: These scholarships are reserved for students from specific regions or countries—you may need to apply with your academic records if your location is eligible.
  • Subject-specific scholarships: Usually sponsored by the university or a third party attached to the university, these scholarships are awarded to students who excel in a particular subject.

The scholarship you are applying for may have several eligibility criteria depending on the type of funding and the awarding body. It’s best to be thorough when going through the scholarship listing so you can learn whether you are eligible for it and look for more scholarship opportunities if you are not eligible to apply for one.

With that in mind, let’s explore fully funded scholarships in the UK that you may be eligible to apply for.

How to Apply for Scholarships to Study Abroad

The process to apply for a scholarship can be lengthy and, at times, confusing—and that’s why a breakdown of the process can help you figure out your next steps. Before we look at the process, let’s go through a list of the most common requirements—or eligibility criteria—you would need to meet when applying for a scholarship.

Application requirements vary with each scholarship depending on the nature of the funding and awarding body, so it’s best to refer to the awarding body to access a comprehensive list of application criteria for the scholarship they offer. That said, we have listed down a few application requirements common to many scholarships awarded to international students.

Let’s have a look:

  • Academic merit: Your academic performance is evaluated by every scholarship offering entity, so your grades/GPA need to be excellent to be selected as a scholarship recipient.
  • Age limit: Some scholarships are reserved for professionals and some are reserved for students, so the awarding body may include an age limit that a qualifying candidate would need to meet.
  • Demonstrated financial need: You may need to show proof of financial need specifically for need-based scholarships.
  • Extracurricular activities: If you are applying for a merit-based scholarship in research, fine arts, or sports, your performance in the relevant area is extremely important. Even if you are applying for a scholarship based on academic merit, extracurricular activities can demonstrate your passion and versatility, helping your application stand out.
  • Field of study: Some scholarships are offered on a programme-specific or subject-specific basis, so if you are planning to follow the indicated field of study in a scholarship, you would be eligible to apply.
  • Language proficiency: Your proficiency in English needs to be demonstrated, so you may be required to add your scores from Language Proficiency Tests you have taken.
  • Nationality: Some scholarships are location-based, so your nationality would be a deciding factor in whether or not you are eligible to apply for some scholarships.
  • Work experience: Most postgraduate scholarships and research grants would require you to have work experience relevant to the field of study you are applying for.

These are the requirements common to most, but specific requirements may vary. For example, a fine arts scholarship would need you to showcase your creative work, and a scholarship awarded by a non-profit organisation would look for your interest in the cause they are working towards. All of this information on eligibility criteria and more would be available to you online as you research, which would be your very first step in the process of applying for a scholarship. Let’s learn more in the next section.

Application Process to Apply for Scholarships

Although the process to apply for a scholarship is similar to the university application process, you need to have a university or a field of study in mind first when you start looking for scholarships to fund your studies. If you already have an idea of what and where you are planning to study, this process breakdown can point you in the right direction. If you don’t have an idea yet, don’t worry, you can always speak to one of our counsellors free of charge to help you get started.

  • Research: Start looking for scholarships offered in the country of your preferred university or preferred programme—checking online would give you a list of relevant scholarships to start with. Make sure to visit the scholarship listing hosted by the awarding body and see if it looks like a good match for your needs.  Additionally, look into online communities on social media networks and forums focusing on scholarships for international students—there’s a high chance you might hear from students who’ve gone through the same scholarship research process and found a match.
  • Identify the scholarships you’d like to apply for: Once you’ve noted the list of scholarships you’d like to apply for, you have to narrow down your list. Check the full list of eligibility criteria to see if you qualify, and get an opinion from an experienced student or an advisor. You can also talk to an expert at SI-UK to get advice on choosing the scholarships you’d like to apply for.
  • Organise your documents: Start putting together the documents you need to send along with your scholarship application. They may be your academic transcripts (professionally translated to English if needed), research proposals, CV, or documents indicating financial need. The documents required are unique to each scholarship, so keep an eye out for anything you are asked to fill in the application form.
  • Write the scholarship essay (if applicable): Most scholarship applications require you to write an essay detailing why you are the best candidate for this scholarship, similar to statements of purpose you would write for your university application. Make sure to customise your essay to each scholarship you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a scholarship awarded by a non-profit organisation, you can talk about your work towards a similar cause.
  • Submit your application on time: Timely submission is mandatory because your application may not be accepted if you don’t meet the deadline. Start your research, documentation, and essay with enough breathing room so you don’t have to rush at the time of submission.
  • Follow up: Scholarship applications take time to be evaluated, so keep your eyes on updates from the awarding body and reach out to them when you want to follow up.

Applying for a scholarship comes with a lot of work, but if you tackle it step-by-step and fulfil all the requirements, there’s a high chance you’ll be studying at a university abroad, all—or most—expenses paid.

Experts at SI-UK can help you identify scholarships that you qualify for and guide you through the application process, from compiling your documents to fine-tuning your scholarship essay. Reach out to get started!

5 scholarships for female Indian students to study in Australia

study in australia

With over 40 universities — many of them great — and a famed lifestyle with an emphasis on “life,” everyone wants to study in Australia.  Ten Australian universities ranked in the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings 2022 , every one of Australia’s universities ranked “world-class ” in at least one area of research by Excellence in Research Australia (ERA), up to four years of post-study work visa for international students — these features draw many to the Land Down Under every year.

Leaving home isn’t easy, though. It’s not just the homesickness international students deal with — but the financial burdens that come with pursuing higher education ( charged in Australian dollars, no less). From course fees to rent and living expenses, it can get really expensive — but don’t think an Australian education is out of reach.

The good news is Australian universities provide international students with several scholarships to help them fund their studies. This includes scholarships specifically for female Indian students interested in studying in Australia.

Each scholarship differs depending on the eligibility and criteria. Some scholarships cover just tuition fees, while others cover tuition, living, and travelling expenses.

Scholarships for female Indians to study in Australia:

Shah rukh khan la trobe university phd scholarship .

“I love this country — especially the people, who are all very warm and welcoming. My colleagues, supervisor, and friends are very supportive and caring,” shares the first recipient of the Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship , Gopika Kottantharayil Bhasi .

Bhasi was selected for the scholarship in 2020. Due to the pandemic, however, she only began her research at the beginning of this year.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan collaborated with the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IIFM) and La Trobe University to launch this scholarship for Indian citizens. This four-year research scholarship is offered only to aspiring female Indian researchers eager to create a meaningful impact in the world.

Recipients of the scholarship will be entitled to many benefits, including:

  • a four-year La Trobe University full free research scholarship in Melbourne, Australia
  • a La Trobe Graduate Research Scholarship for three and a half years with a value of 32,500 Australian dollars per annum to support living costs
  • visa length Overseas Student Health Cover with Medibank for a single person
  • visa application costs for a single person
  • a A$3,000 allowance to cover travel costs from India to Melbourne and opportunities to work with award-winning researchers, in world-class research facilities, and access to La Trobe’s suite of professional development programmes.

Besides being a permanent female resident of India, candidates must have also completed a Master of Research degree within the last 10 years.

Indian student, Manya Gureja graduates from UCL EEE and wins Marconi Prize

9 September 2024

New EEE graduate, Manya Gureja shares her insights into studying for a BEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and tips for prospective international students at UCL.

Manya Gureja

Manya Gureja has just graduated from UCL EEE with a BEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. She is the 2024 winner of the Marconi Prize for best project in the areas of research covered by the Sensors, Systems and Circuits Group.

Manya Gureja's project, "Reputation Systems for Web3 & Decentralised Networks" , looked at ways to build trust in the next generation of the internet, known as Web 3.0. As the internet becomes more decentralised, with people sharing resources and services, it can be difficult to know who to trust. Her project used a special method to group users based on how they behave and perform, allowing for a more accurate and fair way to measure reliability. This new approach could make these systems more trustworthy compared to existing methods.

Manya recently spoke to us about her experiences on the course. Before moving to London, Manya was based in New Delhi, India.

Why did you choose a BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering?

Taking up physics and mathematics-heavy research projects in my final years of high school motivated me to pursue EEE. The course lies at the intersection of applied mathematics, physics and computer science, offering a strong foundation for a variety of careers. Opportunities for project-based learning, the flexibility to tailor my degree and explore subjects beyond my major made UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering an ideal choice.

What did you most enjoy about studying in the Electronic and Electrical Engineering department?

It has to be the plethora of learning opportunities! During my time at UCL, I collaborated on projects spanning from maze-navigating robots, spyware and PCBs (printed circuit boards) to COVID patient tracing applications. The flexibility to choose my modules in the later years enabled me to make my degree more math-centric and explore advanced topics like machine learning, stochastic calculus, option pricing and even the Black Scholes’ model! Having discovered what I am passionate about, I tried to maximise my learning by choosing a final year project that brought principles of Blockchain Systems, Web3 and Machine Learning together!

How are you finding living in London?

I like to say that London offers a place and pace for everyone. Be it cycling along the banks of the Thames, exploring Christmas markets on foot, savouring world-class cuisines or enjoying the vibrant nightlife – there is something in store for everybody. From a professional standpoint, access to opportunities like internships, office visits and networking events is unparalleled! I love how walkable and diverse London is, making it easy to explore new places and cultures.

What is UCL like as an international student?

Being surrounded by students from all corners of the world, who study subjects as diverse as History, Medicine and Engineering, leads to a lot of personal growth! While settling in may initially seem intimidating, it is easy to find like-minded people through freshers’ events, societies and halls of residence. Taylor Swift nights, pub quizzes and silent discos, which are common events at the student bars, are also a great way of maintaining a good work-life balance and making new friends.

What do you think about career opportunities, networking and any other support you have received at UCL?

When it comes to careers, UCL is what you make of it. There are innumerable development opportunities, catering to all degree types. There are CV workshops, mock interviews and work experience days, for those starting out in the corporate and industrial world. For the more entrepreneurial, there are frequent networking sessions, panels and talks with industrial leaders. For perspective, Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI) and Demis Hassabis (CEO of Google DeepMind), visited UCL to speak about their professional journey last year. UCL’s startup incubator, the Hatchery, offers courses on how to start a business and free resources to sustain and grow it. Societies play a crucial role in UCL’s careers ecosystem by partnering with companies and alumni to create exclusive opportunities and provide valuable industry insights.

You mentioned that you have done a couple of internships in the summer breaks while studying at UCL. Who were the internships with and what did you get out of them? How did what you learnt on the course help?

During my first-year spring break, I interned at several financial institutions in London. These were short, week-long internships which are targeted towards students who are keen on exploring finance. This experience led me to pursue an 8-week Markets-based summer internship in India. Having identified this as an area of interest, I pursued a Sales and Trading internship at BNP Paribas in summer 2023, and a Commodity Trading Analytics internship at BP in summer 2024. It is interesting to see the world from a different lens and learn about the complexities of financial instruments that enable organisations to protect and grow their capital! Aside from contributing to meaningful projects and learning skills on the job, speaking to employees about their roles and experiences is incredibly educational and insightful. Most topics that I have studied during my degree, ranging from signal processing concepts like Fourier Series to programming in Python, have contributed to my professional journey so far.

What will you be doing after graduation?

I wish to pursue a career that lies at the intersection of Finance, Math and Computer Science.

What advice would you give to others thinking of applying to the Electronic and Electrical Engineering department?

Be prepared for a challenging and demanding workload, but know that the effort is absolutely worth it. Embrace the journey, take time to enjoy the process and discover yourself along the way!
