Humanities & Social Sciences

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

With a long and rich history of Philosophy discipline in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences, it offers an exciting bunch of undergraduate and postgraduate courses focusing on a broad range of interests from core philosophical approaches to contemporary and interdisciplinary aspects. Such a blend provides comprehensive dimensions to students’ overall academic and social development.

While postgraduate courses focus on the in-depth research on ancient, classical, and contemporary debates and issues in philosophical scenarios; the undergraduate courses (lectures/ tutorials) deal with a broader framework to enhance and inculcate the conceptual clarity and critical thinking among the students. The philosophical engagement allows them to revisit the arguments, phenomena, language, science at meta-level inquiries.

Philosophy Faculty

Philosophy courses.

This course will introduce students to advanced topics in Philosophy as decided by the instructor.

The central objective of this course is to make the student aware of the philosophical implications of the aesthetic attitude and the practice of art in the human world. A philosophical understanding of the place of the aesthetic in our worldview is expected to enhance our self-understanding through an appreciation of our cultural humanity.

The course begins by registering the increased presence of technology in contemporary art. We shall keep the experiences of both classical Greece and Classical India alive where art and technology were not clearly separated in the manner familiar to us. By positioning us between these two experiences - classical and contemporary we shall critically examine the complex relationship between art, science and technology which characterizes modernity. The course uses both materials from philosophical aesthetics, philosophy of science and technology. It also discusses the philosophical writings on specific areas like architecture, photography, cinema and digital art.

This course offers a critical introduction to the essential thought, values and practices in/of Buddhist traditions across time and place. Literature on Buddhism and Buddhist literature brings out the historical, philosophical and political synthesis of Buddhism in ever new cultural contexts. Interrogating and contextualizing engagements of Buddhism‘s classical roots in modernity will be a key concerns in this course.

1) To learn to interpret a philosophical text by placing it in its relevant contexts- intellectual, socio-historical. 2) To reconstruct and critically examine the claims made by the text. 3) To relate the text to contemporary issues and texts in Philosophy.

What makes philosophical thinking radically critical? Investigation of the nature of knowledge about the world and justification of knowledge claims. Metaphysical understanding of the Absolute and Mind-Body relation. The nature of ethical and aesthetic beliefs and attitudes as part of understanding the nature of values. The discussion of the above issues will be influenced by three philosophical orientational perspectives: Anglo-American Analytic, Continental Phenomenological and Classical Indian.

An understanding of the philosophical question of Knowledge and Rational Belief by taking into consideration the possibility of Scepticism, and then attempting a critical comprehension of the Character of Epistemology by bringing into discussion contemporary developments such as Social Epistemology, Virtue Epistemology and Feminist Epistemology.

To provide the student with knowledge about the classical and contemporary philosophers who have directly or indirectly contributed towards constructing the intellectual edifice of fascism. This course will provide the student with the philosophical tools to critically engage with the structures of domination and emerging forms of resistance.

In this course, students are introduced to fundamentals of informal logic and verbal analysis, material and formal fallacies of reasoning often found ordinary discourse, deductive and Inductive reasoning, validity and soundness, formal rules and principles of the deductive system of Aristotelian logic, traditional square of opposition; propositional calculus; first order predicate calculus; the modern square of opposition and the problem of existential import; identity and definite descriptions; methods for formulating natural language arguments in symbolic forms and techniques for checking their validity; various meta-logical theorems and their proofs.

· Identify the philosophical grounds of concepts and approaches in the study of cognition and intelligent behavior. · Demonstrate epistemological challenges involved in evaluating whether machines can have thought and other mental phenomena. · Discuss notions related to computation, representation and meaning to bring out nuances in philosophical arguments about the nature and scope of artificial intelligence. · Explain issues related to the moral status of AI and designing learning machines with ethical sensitivity. · Write analytical essays that flesh out philosophical ideas underlying current debates in AI

The course is a critical study of the problem of the self taken to be a substance by some and denied to have any substantial reality by others. Focus will be given on examining the worldview from which stems the idea of a continuing self, as a subject of consciousness and agent of action. Questions about whether it is material or immaterial, real or nominal object will centre the ontological investigation into the nature of the self. Special consideration will be given to the issue of self-awareness and self-reference, and its relation to the linguistic phenomenon of the first-person pronoun 'I'.

This is primarily a course in applied ethics. It will focus primarily on questions like: What is the meaning of right action? Can ethical assertions be true or false? Is morality relative to society? Or can we say that acts have universal moral content? The course discussions will help to demonstrate that morality is not always self-evident and that rational morality must come in place of taboo based moralities.

This course addresses various philosophical questions that arise from the recent developments in evolutionary biology, genetics, immunology, sociobiology, molecular biology and synthetic biology. How do these developments affect our ideas about life, evolution and the place of man in relation to other living beings. What is the nature of explanation in biological sciences? Does the idea of immunity demand rethinking on the nature of our embodied self? What can biological sciences tell us about healing, pain and death?

To introduce students to key concepts on which definitions of philosophy are constructed, such as “concept”, “idea”, “opinion”, “argument”, representation”, “reason”, “knowledge”, “judgement”, “critique”; to discuss different traditions and critiques of philosophical thinking;

The objective of the course to respond to the cinematic image with the conceptual resources of philosophy. This is not a course in film appreciation. We shall learn to speak and write about what we see. We shall discuss some of the seminal philosophical works on Cinema.

What defines the Indian tradition? Is there a singular Indian tradition or is there a plurality of Indian traditions in the public sphere today? How do these find representation in the modern and textual frameworks? Is modernity antithetical to tradition? The aim of this course is to take up these varied questions along with their nuances to understand and re-negotiate Indian intellectual traditions. In this course, the examination of sources, structure, texts and exemplars from Indian intellectual tradition provide a theoretical framework for the discussion of contemporary political and social issues. Economic development, social justice, religion and the nation, communalism and secularism, caste, class and gender equality are themes to be addressed. The political misuse of tradition in programs of reform and revival both in the past and in modern times will be highlighted to underline the need for rethinking Indian Philosophy and intellectual tradition in an academically rigorous manner. This course will also take into cognisance the intellectual history of the ancient past as it comes through the Vedic thought and its contestations.

What kind of understanding of the past does history provide? Is it speculative or analytical? What constitutes historical evidence and how does it confine historical understanding? Questions of objectivity are the central focus of this course: that of historians themselves— constructionist and objectivist— as they debate methodological issues and disagreements about the aim of their discipline, and that of philosophers whose interest in history springs from their attention on history‘s objectivist ideals and "the objectivity crisis" in history providing a philosophical rationale for reframing the two oppositions that dominate debates about the status of historical knowledge.

This course concentrates on philosophical attempts to understand the concepts of reference, meaning, truth, the nature and presuppositions of communicative exchange. These are intensely debated topics in contemporary philosophy of language and the course aims a critical study of some of the classical papers around the above topics in the field that would enable the student to understand the nuances of the debates and engage with them .

To familiarize students with the precise problems posed by Literature to philosophy, and vice-versa. To study the philosophical nature of the grounding concepts of literature—such as textuality, narrativity, fictionality, and intransitivity. To grasp the singular demand placed by these concepts and problems, and by literary discourse in general, on philosophical conceptualization of being, truth, knowledge, value, creation, temporality, space, language and the human condition. To examine the relation of literary discourse to that of politics, morality, myth, history, and science.

An appreciation of how the fundamental mental concepts are essentially amenable to philosophical sense over and above their usual psychological understanding and analysis. To explain why our mental conceptual scheme does not easily admit of their reduction to physical conceptual scheme. To reflect on whether mentally endowed human person differ, ontologically, from the rest of nature.

Students who complete this course will learn to engage with philosophical questions concerning the foundations of science, as well as the nature of scientific practice.

Science is regarded as the most significant cogntive enterprise of the modern society. In view of this, the course addresses the question what sets science apart from other epistemic activities. Further It concentrates on debates on the nature of scientific methods, logical reconstruction of scientific explanation, the relation between theories and laws on the one hand, and empirical evidence on the other, the nature of the justification and the notion of truth involved in scientific knowledge, and the societal influence on scientific practice.

To explore the relationship between Philosophy and Social Sciences 2) To understand the significance of Social Sciences for the social existence of man 3) To take a critical standpoint on the logic of Social Sciences. 4) To explore the link between the Natural and Social Sciences.

Students taking this course will critically engage with key texts in political philosophy from a variety of philosophical traditions. The aim will be to engage with these texts as part of a living tradition of thinking about politics, and to mine them for insights about the contemporary world. Specific topics and texts may vary from semester to semester.

· To introduce students to politics from the combined perspectives of political philosophy, political theory, and the history of ideas. · To familiarize students with different conceptions of politics through an understanding of the contexts in which they emerged. · To encourage an understanding of the role of political thought, concepts, and critiques in the practice of politics

The course will begin by exploring the worldview implicit in the Vedas, the Upanisads, and the orthodox systems and then move on to the rejection of this entire sytem in Buddhism and Materialism. Emphasis will be led on the diversity of systems and healthy dialogue between antagonistic schools of thought. Discussions will focus on the nature of consciousness in relation to cognition of reality, theories of reality in terms of realism and anti-realism; the nature of self and no-self theory, theories of perceptual knowledge, theories of error; theories of causation and other relations, and key concepts of moral and aesthetic thought. Wherever appropriate, problems will be discussed in comparison with parallel discussions in western philosophy

To engage the student with some of the central issues of metaphysics discussed both in classical and contemporary philosophy in both Anglo-American, Continental and Indian traditions. To make the student proficient in dealing with metaphysical questions and make them realize the centrality of metaphysics in philosophy.

The course will introduce students to selected topics in Philosophy as decided by the instructor.

As closely aligned areas in philosophy– social philosophy with the role of individual in society and political philosophy with the role of government- this course bridges divides between social theory, political philosophy, and the history of social and political thought as also between empirical and normative analysis through perspectives from metaphysics, epistemology and axiology. A range of socio-political thinkers, theories and concepts will be taught. It will provide a broad survey of fundamental social and political questions in current contexts discussing philosophical issues central to political thought and radical critiques of current political theories.

To introduce students to some of the major works of a single author and to discussions elicited by these works. The course will train students to gain a thorough understanding of the trajectory of the given author, the intellectual context of their writing, and to be conversant with debates and questions surrounding their work. The author could be a novelist, poet, philosopher, or literary theorist.

A PhD is not the same as a Doctorate. They, on the other hand, confuse people. The difference between PhD and Doctorate is tabulated below.

Pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) offers numerous advantages for students interested in a specific field.

  • It allows them to explore their subject in-depth and expand their knowledge.
  • PhD students have the freedom to dedicate ample time to their research projects without feeling rushed or pressured for immediate results.
  • One of the main motivations for pursuing a PhD is to enhance employment prospects, as it opens up career opportunities that may not be accessible with just a bachelor's or master's degree. These opportunities often require specialized research skills and extensive experience.
  • Furthermore, a PhD is often a prerequisite for those aspiring to work in academia as lecturers or university researchers.
  • If you have a genuine passion for research, a PhD can be a highly rewarding pursuit, providing a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment. However, it's important to have a clear vision of your post-PhD plans.
  • If you seek a new challenge that fosters personal growth, a PhD offers a unique and highly committed educational experience with significant rewards.

PhD programmes are highly competitive, and many students apply. Because a PhD qualification is a highly valued qualification that is not offered by many colleges, students compete fiercely for admission. Colleges use an entrance exam as a screening process to ensure fairness in the decision-making process. The following are some of the most popular PhD entrance exams:

  • CSIR-UGC NET
  • IISc PhD Entrance Exam
  • JNU Entrance Examination
  • BHU – Research Entrance Test
  • NIPER PhD Entrance Exam
  • AIIMS PhD Entrance Exam

The eligibility criteria for the aforementioned entrance exams vary because they are entirely dependent on the conduction body. As each college or subject has its own governing body, the format of the entrance exams varies depending on the specialization. Some general guidelines for PhD entrance examinations are listed below:

  • There will be logical, reasoning, and knowledge-based questions on the exam. The test will be conducted both online and offline
  • The papers will be objective, and if there are any subjective questions, they will be asked to assess argument and reasoning skills
  • A university's/conduction body's syllabus, mode of examination, and question pattern may change.

PhD admissions are mostly chosen through entrance exams. There are a few universities, however, where admission is also based on merit. A candidate must be eligible for the course in order to apply for PhD admissions. PhD admission requires a Master's degree or an MPhil with an aggregate of at least 55% from any recognised university in the country or a foreign university. Candidates with an MTech or ME degree are also eligible to apply.

To be able to apply for PhD admission 2024, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria.

PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) Eligibility Criteria

Candidates are only eligible to pursue a PhD if they have completed a master's degree in a related course/field/stream to which they are interested in getting a PhD. Some colleges seek candidates to have completed an MPhil before enrolling in a PhD course.

Other than that, many colleges state that candidates who have passed the UGC NET are eligible for PhD programmes offered by them. Candidates wishing to pursue a PhD in Engineering must have a valid GATE score.

Some of the basic eligibility for PhD admission are mentioned below:

  • Students must have a done Master’s degree (MSc/MTech/MPhil/MA/MBA) in a relevant subject, in order to study a PhD Course

In case the candidate belongs to a reserved category (SC/ST/OBC), he/ she will be offered relaxation in minimum marks of either 5% or 10%, depending on the category
  • University/college mandated PhD entrance examination needs to be cleared by the candidate to ensure a seat for pursuing a PhD
  • In some university/colleges candidates that have work experience in the field of research are preferred highly and are given more preference

Admission to Central universities is available. JRF-GATE, the IISC PhD Entrance Exam, the VMOU PhD, the IPU PhD, and the IGNOU PhD are additional PhD entrance exams. A few universities also have entrance exams specifically designed for PhD courses. Applicants may also sit for entrance examinations like the GATE, NET, and CSIR NET to be considered for PhD admissions in India.

To apply for PhD or research course, applicants must complete the following steps:

Step 1: Go to the official website of the college or university, review all of the information about the PhD course it offers, and select the field of study you want to pursue.

Step 2: Candidates must keep a look out for any admission updates or visit the university's official website to complete their application for admission to the course of their choice.

Step 3: Candidates must then complete and submit their PhD application forms in accordance with the educational institution's timeline. Applicants must also submit all required paperwork and the application fee on time in order to be considered for PhD admission.

Step 4: Some colleges and universities may require a research proposal in addition to the application form. The application is submitted to the educational institution's research unit, which reviews it along with the research proposal.

Step 5: Following the review of the PhD application, the majority of colleges and universities shortlist the names of candidates who must appear for the entrance exam and other admissions processes that are held to select applicants for admission to the PhD course they offer.

Step 6: Candidates are assigned supervisors or guides for their PhD research after being admitted to PhD course based on their performance in the admission rounds.

The steps that candidates must take when pursuing a PhD course in order to be awarded a PhD degree are as follows:

  • When candidates are accepted into PhD programmes at educational institutions, they must submit a research proposal as well as a research topic.
  • Then, candidates are assigned a research supervisor or guide.
  • Following this, the Research Programme Coordinator/Guide/Supervisor informs candidates about the Course Work, evaluation methodology, and teaching schedule.
  • Most educational institutions require aspirants to submit six-month progress reports for their research projects.
  • Furthermore, as a Research Student, you must give at least two seminar presentations during your tenure as a Research Scholar and submit a Certificate in the prescribed format to the Research Unit.
  • Before submitting their PhD thesis, PhD students must first publish at least one research paper in a peer-reviewed/refereed journal and then submit a Certificate in the prescribed format to the Research Unit.
  • Before aspirants submit their thesis, their supervisor or guide will host a Pre-submission Seminar. This seminar will be open to everyone. As part of this seminar, candidates will submit a report with suggestions for improvement, and the supervisor will ensure that all of these suggestions are incorporated into their final thesis.
  • Candidates must then incorporate all of the changes and provide a summary of their thesis to their supervisor or guide at least 45 days before submitting the thesis.
  • Finally, candidates must submit their thesis in both hard and soft copy. This thesis will be reviewed by external experts. If an expert suggests any changes to the research paper submitted by the candidate, he or she must resubmit a modified thesis.
  • Then, a viva-voce is held, in which candidates can openly defend their thesis and present their points of view to a panel of experts.
  • Candidates who complete all of these steps to perfection will only receive a PhD degree.

Doctor of Hindu Studies | Philosophy in Hindu studies

Program Description

The Doctoral Program in Hindu Studies builds upon a solid foundation in Hinduism, advancing students into the realm of contemporary application and practice. When a student articulates the relevance of Hindu thought and practice to the specific challenges faced by the Hindu community and by contemporary humanity and is empowered to create innovative approaches centered on Hindu thought to address them, this constitutes mastery.

This enables students to move beyond the conceptual limitations of Orientalist and Indological scholarship which frames Hinduism as a relic of the past, and engage creatively with our shared, globally integrated future with confidence and clarity. Students must take 20 courses across five areas: Research Methods, Core Hindu Studies, Intersectional Studies, Specialization, and Doctoral Studies. Please see Structure of Program for a detailed description of the distribution of courses.

Program Learning Outcomes

Through the Doctoral Program in Hindu Studies, students will be able to:

  • Research, articulate and address critical issues faced by the Hindu community.
  • Develop models of stewardship of Hinduism and Hindu institutions.
  • Analyze the impacts of Western interventions on Hindu society.
  • Create effective approaches towards advancing epistemic justice.
  • Propose interdisciplinary approaches towards resolving challenges facing humanity.

Doctoral Study

The professional doctorate will culminate in a Doctoral Study, an original scholarly paper that examines a real-world problem that relates to a specific applied area of Hindu Studies and offers a practical solution. The goal of the Doctoral Study is to demonstrate students’ command of the programs’ learning outcomes through the design, execution, and presentation of original research. The program will prepare students for the Doctoral Study through coursework in research methods, writing, and a doctoral study seminar. The phases of preparation and assessment for the Doctoral Study are as follows:

  • Qualifying Exam (Written): At the end of the first year (for full time students) or the equivalent coursework (for part time students), students will complete a take-home qualifying exam. Students must receive a passing score on this exam in order to qualify for further study in the program. Students will receive detailed instructions and preparation for the exam from their Advisors.
  • Doctoral Study Seminar: Development of doctoral study proposals for oral presentation. Students are required to take this seminar before proposing their doctoral study.
  • Proposal (Oral): A formal proposal of the research question, design, and plan, including methodology. Students will present in front of their committee for 20 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session.
  • Research, Analysis, and Writing: Collecting data, analyzing, and writing up findings. Doctoral study papers are typically between 25,000-50,000 words. Students will receive guidance from their doctoral advisor and committee members during this period.
  • Doctoral Defense (Oral): Students present their research findings to their committee. Successful defense is a requirement to graduate from the program and for granting of the degree.

Language Requirement

Doctoral students may complete their language requirement in one of two ways:

  • Successfully complete HUA’s Certificate Program in Sanskrit Proficiency or an equivalent Certificate Program offered by HUA.
  • Successfully complete of at least four courses that actively engage the department’s Sanskrit Glossary, followed by passing an in-house exam (with at least a C grade)

Students must complete the language requirement prior to their Doctoral Defense. Students who have advanced degrees in Sanskrit or show that they have passed an exam of equivalent or higher level (e.g., the Sanskrit Proficiency Test (SPT)), can apply for exemption from this exam. For students whose particular doctoral work requires a higher skill level in Sanskrit or any other language, the program recommends that they study and demonstrate the appropriate level of fluency; this will be discussed and determined with their advisors, with guidance and support at a program level.

Program Context:

In the Doctoral Program in Hindu Studies, as students immerse themselves in critical inquiry, they will be able to evaluate the truth claims of the knowledge systems based in Hindu thought, rationally and systematically, in the light of contemporary advances in science, technology, the humanities and social sciences and other domains of knowledge. They will discover for themselves the complexity, validity, relevance, and contemporary value of Hindu thought. They will begin to reflect on the human condition, humanity’s history, and its future from the standpoint of Hindu cosmology.

They will critically examine the received knowledge on Hindu thought, culture and civilization, question established narratives with careful observation and evidence, in an atmosphere of academic excellence and freedom. They will explore the framework of ethics embodied in the idea of Dharma and its intersection with current trends in thought in one or more domains of philosophy, theology, religion, sciences, and the humanities. They will carefully interrogate the ideas of tradition, modernity, progress, evolution, spirituality, and self-discovery.

They will be able to articulate the Hindu worldview and cosmology with clarity and confidence, in written, oral and other media, and compare, contrast and critique different paradigms, methods and worldviews. They will begin to think from a Hindu context and promote innovative applications of Hindu thought towards addressing seemingly intractable contemporary challenges facing humanity, in a language and metaphor that is at once, timeless and transcendental, and contemporary and progressive.

The realms of Dharma and Moksha , Jnana and Yoga are the unique dimensions of Hindu thought. These dimensions take us beyond the domain of material success, wealth, status, influence, and power in the temporal world. They take us into a deeper dimension of human possibility i.e., the spiritual or the Adhyatmika realm. In each of us lies dormant a need and a desire for deeper engagement with the world, to converse and communicate, (Samvada), to contribute, to make a difference and be of service in a profound and meaningful way.

In each of us lies as yet unfulfilled the potential for leadership and global impact, sometimes even as yet unimagined. In every one of us without exception there lies the possibility of going within, exploring the realms of deeper levels of consciousness, and transforming our connection and relationship with the cosmos itself. Hindu thought carries within it the seeds of a greater possibility, of a deeper fulfillment and connection with the cosmos, a more profound self-expression, contribution, and service to humanity. The Doctoral Program in Hindu Studies is a quest, at once both intellectual and deeply spiritual, and a journey of both profound personal and social transformation.

A very flexible and informative learning experience WET allowed me an opportunity to further my education in a subject I would have had to go to university for. I appreciate the flexibility that WET has shown without sacrificing excellence…. WET has helped me feel comfortable researching, documenting and discussing any given topic.

I wasn’t able to leave my full time job to study so distance learning suited me best. I was able to set my own timetable and submit assessments around my own commitments. Had it not been for the flexible nature of the course I would not been able complete my studies!

Syllabus for the first section:

Numerical abilities: Grade 10 mathematics as per CBSE/ICSE/International school boards

Academic integrity and research ethics:  What is academic integrity and why is it required?

What is plagiarism (including self-plagiarism)? Citing, summarizing, paraphrasing and quoting others’ work. https://usingsources.fas.harvard.edu/

Responsible conduct of research: For any epidemiological/intervention based/ investigative/observational studies involving humans: http://www.who.int/ethics/research/en/

Statistics: Empirical methods in science, constructs and their operationalization into variables, continuous and discontinuous variables, scales, reliability and validity, frequencies, distributions, central tendencies:  Mean, median, mode; measures of dispersion; graphical representation of data;  correlation and covariance;  standard normal distribution; sampling error of the mean and standard error; hypothesis testing; Type I and Type II errors; t-tests; chi square test; ANOVA (all types, including post hoc tests and corrections); and regression (simple and multiple); non-parametric statistics; confidence intervals, power analysis, and effect size.

Rather than mathematical derivations and formulations, questions will test applied aspects of these statistical concepts. You will be tested on

  • Your  ability to interpret graphical data
  • Spot data inconsistencies and errors on graphical representations
  • Understanding of errors than compromise reliability and validity of a study
  • How to operationalize constructs into variables

The second section will be grouped into five subsections out of which candidates will choose any three. Questions will be grouped according to the core domains in psychology: Biological, Developmental, Clinical, Social, Cognitive and Measurements and Methodologies. This section will follow the syllabus of the subject GRE test in psychology. Please use the following link to obtain the syllabus and sample questions.

https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/practice_book_psych.pd f. The following textbook might provide a good starting point for preparation:

Passer, M. W., & Smith, R. E. (2004). Psychology: The science of mind and behavior (2nd ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill.

There are also several commercially available study guides which can help you prepare for this part of the test regardless of your academic background.

The PhD program will include academic and research training as well as ethical and career development training. The first two years (one year, in case of M.Phil./ M.Tech. entrants) will be heavily tilted to coursework and professional development and career planning workshops. Students need a minimum of 24 coursework credits to advance to PhD candidacy in year 3.   To maintain good academic standing in order to receive your fellowship, all PhD students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 7.5 (i.e. A minimum grade of B- or above) for all coursework .

From third year onwards, gradually the research components will start to predominate, and years 4 and 5 will be more or less research centric. Three activities will be suggested for all PhD students through their tenure at the Department of Psychology at Ashoka University.

  • Psychology Journal Club: Every week a student will present a journal article. Attendance is mandatory for all PhD students. Senior students will present in the earlier part of the academic year for the newer entrants to learn from their peers
  • Graduate research seminar in Psychology: Every week two students will present their own research in front of the department. Attendance is mandatory for all PhD students and all faculty members are encouraged to attend the weekly GRS
  • Teaching assistantships: Each student will serve as graduate TAs in a course in consultation with the thesis advisor every semester starting from the beginning of second year. The particular arrangements will be worked out by the advisor and the department on a case by case basis.
  • Individual Development Plan(IDP): Every year, starting from the first year, students will submit an individual development plan to the PhD coordinator and the advisor by October 1 of every academic year. This will serve as a roadmap to the upcoming year for the student, and will be reviewed as part of their annual progress review. Further resources on how to think about an IDP is available online and some guidelines are provided below. The students will receive more guidance on this as they enroll in the program

Duration of the PhD program: For candidates with M.Phil or M. Tech, the duration of the PhD Fellowship is 4 years. For every other entrant, the duration of the PhD fellowship is 5 years. The PhD curriculum has been developed within this framework.

Major Milestones in the PhD program:

  • Qualifying exam at the end of year 2
  • Thesis proposal defense and advancing to candidacy year 3
  • Thesis defense at the end of year 5
  • If student/trainee is unable to clear the qualifying exam or the thesis proposal they will be asked to leave.

Elaborating the milestones briefly:

phd philosophy india

  • After the students have been selected for admission, they will actively correspond with the potential thesis advisors and finalize this by a process of mutual agreement. This should be completed as soon as possible but no later than July 1, 20xx for a September 20xx admission.
  • Familiarize yourself with the proposed project(s) you will be working on for the first two years of your PhD. One of these could potentially become your dissertation project.
  • Using the time between selection and enrollment, the prospective student is encouraged to think and formulate a plan for their tenure at Ashoka University. Sample but not exhaustive pointers to think about could be
  • What are your strengths? (academically, and non-academically) How will these strengths become complementary to your advisor’s expertise for the project(s) discussed?  How well do you fit in to the research group?
  • What are your weaknesses? (academically and non-academically). How can you improve yourself in these areas using the resources and the PhD experience at Ashoka University?
  • How well do you understand ethical issues for responsible conduct of research and academic integrity? If there are gaps, which areas do you need to address first?
  • What are your short term and long-term goals? How can the PhD Program at Ashoka University help you attain those?
  • What parallel skills can the program give you in addition to theoretical and technical expertise directly related to your PhD program?

All these will be essential in writing your Individual Development Plan (IDP) at the very beginning of year 1 and every subsequent years. This is a program requirement and cannot be waived for any student.
