Hi. Ordered my wife's PhD Thesis to be bound, all 336 pages, last week. It's arrived! We are so pleased with the quality and service. Thank you. Stephen, Lynn and Mabel the dog. One happy house.

Thank you very much for the binding. I have received the thesis and it is very well done.

Kind regards, Kevin

I binded my dissertation in 2021, and I am totally satisfied with the result! It is beautifully binded and very proud of the book!

What fantastic service, and what a great finished product. Iain was brilliant in ironing out a few glitches (caused by me tbh). I can't praise him or the service provided highly enough. If you want your thesis bound professionally you've found the right place.

Just received my bound dissertation from Helix. I had to write this brief message to say thank you so much, it is absolutely stunning. The service, quality, and simplicity of the process is amazing. I cannot recommend your company enough, I will definitely be using you for future binding projects. Many thanks, Dave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Print Services

  • Print Services Frequently Asked Questions
  • Newcastle University
  • University Library
  • External Pages

What is a proof?

A proof is a 'one off' print of your artwork which gives you the opportunity to check a copy for colour correctness, set up, punctuation, borders, etc. We highly recommend you check a proof especially if you send your artwork in a non pdf format as conversion may alter aspects of your artwork

What is artwork?

This is your design ready for print.

What are CMYK and RGB?

These are the colours that make up your image, screens and websites use RGB (red, green, blue) and most digital printers use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black toner or ink). We recommend you design and save your artwork in CMYK for digital print as RGB will need to be converted.

What is 'bleed' and do I need it?

Bleed is an extra 3mm of image or background colour that extends beyond the trim area of your final print. This area is trimmed from the final piece to create a borderless image. Bleed is needed to make sure no important text or images are cut into when the print is cut to size. We recommend that any important text or imagery is kept at least 5mm away from the bleed edge to avoid being cut into.

Image resolution

Images should be a minimum 300dpi and 150dpi for large banners.

Which file format?

Our preferred file format for digital printing is PDF and any file type you send will be converted to PDF format.

Microsoft Office is not really suitable for printing things such as flyers, leaflets, booklets, posters, etc as the dpi is too low and can give a washed out look to your job, it is better to use Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or even Photoshop. If the only software available is Microsoft office then Microsoft Publisher is recommended as Power Point is designed for on screen presentations not printing. Microsoft Word is fine for theses, forms, questionnaires, etc.

We can accept Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Abode Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, JPEG and TIFF.

Images within artwork

Please ensure that images within artwork are at least 300dpi and CMYK. Most website images are under 100dpi and unsuitable for printing.

Which size should I design at?

Please set up to the exact size that you wish your job to print, if there is colour to the edge please ensure 3mm bleed is added.

How do I pay for my job?

If you are internal to the University, you can use a cost centre number by sending through an “Internal Purchase Requisition”. This must be signed by the account holder and must contain a job name or reference to allows us to match payment to printing. If you are using our online system, please choose “PO number” at the payment section and type your cost centre number for reference and continue to send your IPR.

External customers and students can pay by card or cash over the Print Services reception desk. You may also pay by card over the phone by contacting Print Services on +44 (0) 191 208 5144. You will need your order number for refence. If using our online system, please choose "Pay at Store".

Can you deliver?

We can deliver to all local university sites, NHS buildings and can arrange postage to anywhere in the world.

What are your turnaround times?

We aim to print black and white jobs within 2 days and colour within 3 days. If there is any finishing such as binding, laminating, etc we usually require an extra day. Please note turnaround times are after you have signed off your proof for printing.

Theses held at newcastle university:.

You can search for a thesis held by Newcastle University at:

  • LibrarySearch and
  • theses.ncl.ac.uk .

Theses submitted to other UK institutions:

You can search for theses submitted to other UK institutions using:

  • The British Library's EThOS service .

Theses submitted to overseas institutions:

You can search for theses submitted to overseas institutions using:

  • The ProQuest Dissertations & Theses database, available via Library Search .

For further guidance and information:

Guidance on finding and submitting dissertations and theses using these and other methods is also available at the LibGuide web page:

  • Theses and Dissertations Libguide .

Searching for a thesis using Library Search

This is much like searching for books and other items. You can search for the name of the author and / or the title of the thesis - LibrarySearch will return theses in the search results.

Searching for theses either by thesis type or by subject is not as straightforward.

Firstly, select Advanced Search. From here, change the first search field from Any to Publisher. After that, enter M.D. or Ph.D into the Contains field, depending on whether you are searching for a medical doctoral thesis or a non-medical doctoral thesis. Finally, change Material Type from All Items to Theses.

To search for theses by subject, you can combine the above with an Any Field keyword search.

An image showing the Advanced Search function on Library Search website, searching for the word "chemistry"

The search above would find all the PhD theses published by the School of Chemistry, or with the word 'chemistry' anywhere else in the record. You could be more specific and change the Any Field to Title. This would only return PhD theses with 'chemistry' in the title, and not necessarily all PhD theses on the subject of chemistry.

Searching for a thesis using theses.ncl.ac.uk

theses.ncl.ac.uk is Newcastle University's digital repository for M.D. and PhD. level theses. Only theses submitted to Newcastle University appear in this repository - theses from other universities are not included.

If you search 'PhD' in the search box at the top of the theses homepage, you can see all the PhD theses produced by Newcastle University that are available electronically. You can then add a filter to search for a word contained in the title.

In the example below, theses with the word 'communication' in the title will be returned in your results. Make sure to toggle the Equals search function to Contains.

An image showing the search of theses.ncl.ac.uk for the word "PhD", with a filter for the word "communication" having been applied to the results.

To search theses by School:

Return to the theses.ncl.ac.uk homepage.

First, click on Newcastle University.

An image highlighting the location of the 'Newcastle University' community on theses.ncl.ac.uk

Then click on the faculty you would like to search.

An image highlighting the list of faculties on theses.ncl.ac.uk

Following this, click on the department, institute, or school you'd like to search.

An image highlighting the list of departments found under the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering on theses.ncl.ac.uk

Once you've done this, you'll be able to see the theses that have been produced by a particular school.

Title: Developing novel enzymes for the laundry industry
Authors:
Issue Date: 2011
Publisher: Newcastle University
Abstract: Grass stains containing chlorophyll are the most difficult stains to remove from cotton fabrics in laundry processes. The grass cell walls are highly complex networks of polysaccharides interlocking with each other, which makes it recalcitrant to enzyme degradation. In nature, glycoside hydrolases that target plant cell walls often contain noncatalytic carbohydrate binding modules (CBMs), which promote enzymes access to insoluble substrates and thus potentiate catalysis. This project aims to use xylan-specific CBMs to target enzymes in washing powder onto grass stains to improve the removal of these stains. The binding capacity of CBMs to grass stains arrayed on nitrocellulose was initially assessed using immunological methodologies that focused on the detection of the His6 tag of the CBMs. The data showed that CBM15 and CBM2b1,2 bound to grass weakly, in the presence of Marvel. When the surfactant Sodium Lauryl Ethoxy Sulphate (SLES) was added, both CBMs showed strong binding to grass stains arrayed on the membranes in the presence of Marvel. Different methods to detect the two CBMs binding to grass stains displayed on cotton were explored in the absence of Marvel. The most appropriate method was direct labelling of CBM2b and CBM15 using fluorescent dye (Alexa 488) followed by confocal and fluorescent microscopy. The confocal data showed that both CBMs bound to grass stains and cotton, in the absence of SLES. The confocal data also showed that SLES strongly increased CBM2b1,2 targeting to grass stains. To quantify the CBM adsorption to grasses and cotton, standard fluorescence microscopy was used to provide a quick and efficient image formation system. Statistical analysis showed that neither CBMs significantly bound to grass stains, in the absence of SLES. There was significant increased targeting of both CBMs to grass stains in the presence of SLES. They both showed significant binding to non-stained cotton, either with or without SLES. CBM2b1,2 and CBM15 were fused to the xylanases C. japonicus Xyn10A and N. patriciarum Xyn11A respectively; the CBM-enzymes were purified and assessed in detergent assays. Statistical analysis showed that CBM2b1,2-Xyn10A efficiently released grass stains the most and showed a significant difference to the control with no enzymes, in surfactant formulation containing a high percentage of SLES (high SLES blend). Xyn10A, Xyn11A, CBM15- Xyn10A, CBM15-Xyn11A and CBM2b1,2-Xyn11A were not significantly different to the control, but they showed higher averages of the amount of grass dye released than the control, in high SLES blend. This thesis also reports the biochemical properties and crystal structure of vCBM60, a homolog of CBM60 in C. japonicus, which uniquely displays broad ligand specificity, targeting xylans, galactans and cellulose. The crystal structure of vCBM60 displays a β- sandwich with the ligand binding site comprising a broad cleft formed by the loops connecting the two β-sheets. Ligand recognition at site 1 is, exclusively, through hydrophobic interactions, while binding at site 2 is conferred by polar interactions between a protein-bound calcium and the O2 and O3 of the sugar. The observation that ligand recognition at site 2 requires only a β-linked sugar that contains equatorial hydroxyls at C2 and C3, explains the broad ligand specificity displayed by vCBM60. Another CBM from family 35 in C. thermocellum has been studied in this project. Site directed mutagenesis of ten residues around its binding site were carried out. The binding of wild type and mutants of CtCBM35 to galactomannan was determined by Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC). The data showed that all ten mutants abolished binding to galactomannan. Within a wider context for the CBM35 family, where the ligand binding sites of galactose-specific CtCBM35 and uronate-specific CBM35s are similar structures, but display divergent ligand specificity, the signature residues in their ligand binding sites are compared and discussed in this study.
