Essay writing is a vital activity for your child, and it is introduced in school from a very young age. When your child is asked to write an essay on themselves, they spend time looking inward, and they are compelled to think about the ideas they want to write. This helps them streamline their thoughts and arrange them in short and simple sentences when they get down to expressing those thoughts on paper. Thus, it helps improve their grammar and writing skills. Here, we will talk about the tips on writing an excellent essay on ‘Myself’ and how your child can get better at articulating their thoughts and opinions when writing it.

Writing an essay can be confusing, especially for young children since they don’t know where to begin. These step-by-step guidelines with help your child write an essay about themselves.

  • Firstly, let them weave the points/ideas they want to write about.
  • The second step is to note down the ideas to form an outline to cover all the points while writing the essay.
  • They can form short and simple sentences from the outline in the third step.
  • Encourage your child not to get too deep describing any idea. This will help them when adhering to the required word count.

  • Your child can mention their name, age, school, parents, siblings, grandparents, pets, favourite activity, favourite flowers, favourite foods, the people who have influenced them the most in their lives, etc.

Let us guide your child to write a few lines on the ‘Myself’ essay for class 2. These lines will give them an idea of how to write a simple essay on themselves.

  • My name is Aadit Roy, and I am 7 years old.
  • I live in Kolkata.

  • My father’s name is Mr Aditya Roy, and my mother’s name is Mrs Tina Roy.

  • We have a lovely furry family member whose name is Lucky.
  • I love playing with Lucky and my sister, toy cars and aeroplanes.
  • My favourite colour is blue.

Here’s a small passage that will help your little one write a composition on ‘Myself’. The short essay below is in simple and short sentences and will be easy for your child to follow.

I am Aadit Roy. I live in Kolkata. I am 7 years old. I study at XYZ School. I live with my parents, grandparents, elder sister, and our furry family member, Lucky. My best time of the day is when I play with Lucky and my sister after school. I also like the picnics we have every month. I like to run on green grass under the open sky. My favourite colour is blue. My favourite plant is the sunflower plants in our garden. I love the way the flowers turn towards the sun. I like the club sandwich that my mother makes. I also like the tangy tomato soup with breadsticks. I like to see different shapes of white clouds floating in the blue sky.

While short paragraphs are great at teaching kids to organise and articulate their thoughts in fewer words, long essays give them the creative freedom to express their thoughts in greater detail, drawing more emotion from each word. Here is an example of a long essay derived from the above short paragraph:

My name is Aadit Roy. I am a seven-year-old boy. I live in Kolkata with my parents, grandparents, elder sister, and our furry friend, Lucky. I love my family. I wake up every morning with sloppy kisses from Lucky. My mother helps me get ready for school. Then my father drops my sister and me to our schools. I study at ABC School. My best friend’s name is Vidhant. After school, I play with my elder sister and Lucky on our lawn. Sometimes, my mother takes us to the park. My father takes all of us for a picnic once every month. I love to play in the green grassy fields under open blue skies.

My favourite colour is also blue, and my favourite festival is Holi. In the evenings, I study for one hour. I love to accompany my parents to feed the strays in our locality in the evenings. When I grow up, I will have a big land to keep many helpless animals and take care of them. I love them. Before dinner, I watch cartoons. My favourite cartoon is Tom and Jerry. I don’t like to watch too much television. I like to draw and paint. I enjoy filling pictures with bright colours. I also help my mother. I feel I should help her because she works so hard the whole day.

My favourite food is the mushroom soup my mother makes. I don’t like to eat non-vegetarian food because I don’t like to hurt animals. I love to play with toy cars and aeroplanes. I have a wooden cart with colourful wheels. We put our favourite toys and foods in it. Then we pull it around the house and have mini picnics in the corner of our lawn. I visit the temple every month with my parents and sister. I pray to God to be with everyone who needs Him. I pray to Him to arrange food for all helpless animals and help poor people.

Writing an essay will help your child improve their writing skills, and it will also enhance their vocabulary. Usually, everyone tends to look at others and overlook themselves. When your little ones write about themselves, they learn to look inward, and this step is very important for self-awareness. At the same time, the activity of writing will also develop your child’s fine motor skills.

We hope the above write-up will help your child compose a beautiful composition on themselves. With the tips given in this article, your child can learn how to observe themselves and improve imagination and self-expression through creative writing.

Throughout the world, there are many different types of people who have different personalities. A person’s personality is what makes them different from each other and makes them unique from the crowd. That’s why it is important to be able to define the characters as one’s own.

A Look at My Personality

As a student, I am very simple and do my best to attend every class in my school. There is a group of friends I am close to, but Sanika is the best and truest friend I have. As a student, I am involved in all the extracurricular activities of the school and I do well in all of them. I am a very good academic performer as well as a very good athlete. When it came to my homework and class work, I never left anything incomplete, and I preferred to finish them before going to sleep.

It is a habit of mine to read the newspaper every day. The majority of my time was spent lying down in the park with a book in hand. I am also a very attentive student in class most of the time as well. Aside from that, I am also very organized when it comes to my work. As well as being a responsible individual, I am also someone who has a sense of sympathy for others. When friends or classmates need help, I am also there to help them.

I live in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. I have a joint family and I live with my grandparents, uncle, aunt, and cousins. Among my only brother and two sisters, I am the youngest. All of us go to the same school. My father is a Teacher and my mother is a businesswoman. Both of them are passionate about their occupations.

I am fortunate to have a broad-minded and open-minded family. My family always encourages me to do my very best in all areas of my life. They teach me moral values and help in making important decisions. As we celebrate each festival together with my family, I have a great time spending with them.

How to Write an Essay on Myself with Examples

People often have trouble describing themselves and avoid it whenever they can, but it’s a good way to know more about themselves and develop further. Thus, here I’m writing an essay on myself for you to read about my strengths and weaknesses. Students can get a chance to explore themselves by writing about themselves. If you are unsure about beginning your write-up, you can take some help from the following example essay about me.

Essay on My Self for Class 12 | Myself Essay | My Self Essay Example

I’m Akshi Agrawal, and my name means eyes. I study in class 12th at St. Gregorios School. I was born and raised in Delhi. I live in a nuclear family and feel so blessed to have such a supportive and loving family.  Everyone loves spending some quality time with their family, and so do I. General conversations with family members can improve one’s speaking and listening skills to a great extent. I’m a good listener and advisor too.

I have always had an ardent love for dance. I hold mastery in a classical dance form i.e. Bharatanatyam. My passion for dance encourages me to learn and perform different dance forms. Usually, my leisure time is consumed by writing articles, poetries, and much more. Or else, exploring new words, so as to enhance my vocabulary.

Besides, I love listening to music to relax my mind. I have a keen interest in DIYs and art and craft as well. Being a nature lover, I’m very fond of enjoying its beauty in other material worldly things.

While talking about nature the word ‘rain’ pops up first of all in my mind. I adore rain, as it brings a sigh of relief and soothes my soul. But, of course, one of the main reasons for which I love rain is petrichor. Generally, I want things more clean and perfect than usual.

My Ambitions in Life

Nowadays, the only thing ruling my mind is to strive for a lifestyle I have always dreamt of. It has been my goal to be well-positioned in life and to do so, lately, I have been planning to opt for a professional course as my career. Though several other options are there at the back of my mind, eventually, I’ll go for the one which suits my capability, so as to provide the best of myself.

There are several things, that I’m eager to learn, including, learning new languages (it has many cognitive benefits), calligraphy, playing the guitar, and a lot more. But, first and foremost, I’m looking ahead to grab an opportunity to be a part of social activism, women empowerment, etc.

Tell me about yourself (How to Answer in Job Interview)

My strengths.

For me, the key to success is a combination of consistency and smart work. I believe setting goals is so pivotal to succeeding in life. A ship without radar drifts and ultimately sinks, like how, without aim, we would not know in which direction to move on.

I believe our lives are shaped by various experiences we encounter, whether good or bad. That’s why life’s perceptions are contingent on experiences. I have been believing in the ‘law of attraction’ for quite some time now. In layman’s language, it can be defined as one’s thoughts dictating one’s reality. Figuratively it means, that thoughts attract corresponding situations and circumstances in one’s life.

I have read a book called ‘The Secret’ which is based on this philosophy only. There’s a quote in this book, ” Your power is in your thoughts, so stay awake”. In other words, “remember to remember”, which caught my eye and inspired me to extract the positives out of every situation, and let the negatives drain out. Being observant, even minor things out there, have my attention.

In my opinion, a person should be decisive, as once, I got a great piece of advice from one of my elders, that, there should be no space for regrets. Quite often, our decisions turn out unfavourable. But, crying over spilt milk is of no use; rather, we must chin up and positively keep stepping forward.

My Weaknesses

I dislike people who constantly criticise others. Since, the fact cannot be denied that there’s a thin line difference between, being opinionated and being a critic. I get so engrossed in the work that I ignore my health and the physical needs of a human body.

Conclusion: Essay on Myself

Clearly, our lives are shaped by various experiences we have encountered, whether good or bad, which play a significant role in altering the outlook we have towards our lives.

Self-confidence, a positive attitude, and gratitude are the tools which help me to overcome obstacles and lead a happy life. I’m so grateful for everything that life has served me to date.

Last but not least, everyone is unique and gifted in some way. Hence, Embrace the essence of who you are. “Who you’re authentically is alright.”

In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

body_landscape.jpg

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

If you're wondering how to come up with options for your editor to consider, check out our guide to brainstorming topics for your college essay .

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

  • Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
  • Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
  • Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
  • Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

  • Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
  • Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
  • Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
  • Tell you what to say and how to say it
  • Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
  • Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

  • An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
  • An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
  • An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

body_ideas.jpg

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

body_detective-2.jpg

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

  • If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
  • If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
  • If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

body_spill-1.jpg

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. ( Yale University )

Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. ( Vanderbilt University )

body_thumbsup-3.jpg

Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

body_goats.jpg

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

  • Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
  • Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
  • Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

  • Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
  • How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
  • Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
  • Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

  • Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
  • Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
  • Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
  • Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
  • What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

body_monalisa.jpg

  • You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
  • A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
  • A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
  • A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
  • All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
  • Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
  • If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
  • Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

Ivy League Prep is passionate about helping students craft outstanding college admissions profiles . In this article, we discuss our approach to an important section of the college application: the personal essay.

Your child’s personal essay is the ideal opportunity to take all the grades, scores, honors, activities, and other elements of their application and weave them together into a cohesive narrative.

The personal essay will show the admissions officer who your child is, how they think, and what they are passionate about. This brief snippet of prose should be the centerpiece of your child’s admissions profile, and all the other parts of the application should point toward it. Your child must effectively communicate their unique narrative through the personal essay.

However strong your child’s application is, they should strive to write a captivating personal essay that, if nothing else, takes a great application and makes it even better.

The Purpose of the Personal Essay

The personal essay is a 650-word written component of the Common Application that offers several diverse prompts. The short length of the essay and the narrow scope of each prompt means that the essay must provide a focused glimpse into who your child is and why they will be valuable to the college.

Most of the essays submitted to top colleges are average and don’t attract much attention. If your child’s essay doesn’t quickly grab the admissions officer’s attention, they might only spend a few minutes reading it.

So, what must your child’s personal essay communicate to the admissions officer to be interesting, effective, and memorable?

Quality Writing

Your child’s essay needs to show that their writing meets a satisfactory standard of quality and maturity. The essay should prove that your child has a firm grasp of English grammar, diction, writing style, form, and logic.

Effective Narrative

Admissions officers are looking for prose that effectively communicates your child’s narrative. If your child’s essay is banal and uninteresting, an admissions officer reading it will likely be bored. Your child’s essay needs to showcase their personality and unique perspective .

Conciseness

The online Common Application essay allows for no more than 650 words. While this may seem like too small a space for everything your child wants to communicate, it isn’t. Admissions officers have piles of applications to go through, so they consider brevity a virtue. Make sure you write concisely .

Narrow Focus

Being concise is not the same thing as having focus. It’s possible to write a short but scatterbrained essay or one that is longer but focused. The key is for your child to keep the essay both concise and focused. To do so, your child should focus on a single experience and use it to communicate their overall narrative.

Individuality

Admissions officers want to see a unique individual. Your child’s classes, grades, test scores, and activities will likely be common among college applicants. Therefore, your child needs to focus on their unique narrative, showing why they are exceptional . This means that your child must demonstrate authenticity, maturity, a unique perspective, and specialized knowledge or skills.

The personal essay is one more place to show the admissions officer that your child will add value to the campus. Your child should use the essay to show how their unique perspective, skills, and passions will inspire other students and enhance the college’s learning experience.

Top schools want applicants who are mature enough not only to handle the rigors of a challenging academic environment but also to take full advantage of those opportunities. The personal essay is one of the ways an admissions officer will gauge your child’s maturity level.

Passion and Ability

Admissions officers are looking for students with a high level of passion and ability. Passionate students tend to lead and inspire others, and highly skilled students tend to contribute to the success of the college’s programs. Your child’s application will likely already reflect their passions and interests, but the personal essay is an opportunity to breathe life into the facts included in the application.

In the personal essay, your child can use their unique experiences to show why they are so passionate and focused. Clearly, it is a significant part of the college application.

My name is Nayana. I am from Silicon City of India, Bengaluru. I study at Bengaluru International School. I study in Class 3. I go to school by the school bus. I have a best friend, and her name is Netra. She lives near my house. I have a lot of friends who stay nearby. There are 6 people in our home. I stay with my mother, father, sister, grandmother and grandfather. My grandparents tell us many folk stories and help us learn valuable lessons of life. My sister and I love listening to these stories, and we discuss them in our free time.

I love gardening and help my mother in watering the plants. We have grown rose plants, jasmine flowers, Tulasi plants and many medicinal herbs. I also enjoy painting, and my sister and I usually sit on our balcony and engage in painting. I love sweets, and my grandmother and my mother prepare delicious sweets during the festivals at home. My father fosters reading habits and has bought us a lot of books. He also motivates us to pursue cultural activities like singing and dancing.

How we introduce ourselves to others is the foremost impression we create on them. Who we are, what we like to do in our leisure time, what makes us different from the crowd, what values we hold on to, etc. are the things we need to introspect and write in the “About Myself” section.

Myself essay for class 1

Myself essay for class 1 3 Models

Myself essay for class 1, this type of essay is one of the most important essays that we should train a young child on.

Because of the young age of the student in class 1, writing an essay about himself will be a rather difficult step.

Therefore, we must help the young child and teach him what self-expression means. We must teach him how to start writing my self essay. What is the first sentence he should write in myself essay. We must encourage the child to say what is inside him in simple sentences, and not remain silent among his colleagues.

This is what we will teach children in our featured essay for today.

Myself essay for class 1

In order to teach the young child  to write myself essay for class 1 in the nursery school or in the primary stage, We must start by teaching the young child the basics of essay writing.

These basics should start with teaching him self-confidence and expressing what is going on inside him without fear of those around him, or fear of the reaction of his classmates. Because the child’s fear causes him to categorically refuse to write.

Steps to write an essay about myself

In order to write an essay about yourself, you must start by introducing your name. In the next step, you must state your age and where you live. Then you talk about the number and gender of your siblings, and remember your rank among family members. Then you talk about the father and mention his job and place of work, and you talk about the mother and mention her job and place of work.

You could talk about the school, mention the class in which you attend, and express how you feel about the school. Talk about the subjects you prefer. Talk about your close friends and the kind of games you play together, both at school and outside. Mention your favorite food and where you like to eat fast food. Finally, you can talk about the hobbies and sports that you spend your free time in.

Difficulties a child faces when writing an essay

First: Fear of bullying colleagues on the way he writes the article, and for this the teacher must alert everyone to the need to respect others and not laugh and ridicule when they express themselves.

Second: The child’s inability to write correctly because he does not know the alphabet, in which case the teacher must teach him the letters and teach him how to write words and sentences.

Third: The child’s inability to write coherent sentences with a clear meaning, and for this the teacher must help him to memorize sound sentences in order to use them when needed.

Fourth: The child’s confusion about the first sentence with which the essay will begin, and for this the teacher must tell him that he must introduce his name at the beginning so that he does not feel confused and anxious and does not write.

Sample of myself essay for class 1

My name is Ali Shaker. I am 6 years old and I live in India specifically in Bombay. I have 4 brothers and sisters, and I am the youngest person in my entire family. I like to play football with my brothers and run races.

My father is a high school teacher, and he goes to school every day. On his way to school he takes me with him to drive me to my school on his way. My mom works as a nurse in the hospital that treats burns. I don’t like to go to my mom’s when she is at work, because the sight of burns is scary and I can’t bear to see patients in pain.

I am inclass 1 of primary school, and I hope to be a pediatrician when I grow up. I love the school, I respect the teachers and I respect my colleagues.

My favorite food is curry rice that my mom makes. I like to buy candy in front of the school, but my mom warns me that candy is exposed and prone to flies.

On the weekends we all go out for a walk, buy ice cream, and sit in the park near our house. As for hobbies, I like to ride a bike and play soccer in front of the house. And in winter I like to drink a hot drink and watch TV with my family.

Conclusion of myself essay for class 1

At the end of my self essay for class 1, everyone should know that it is necessary for a child to express himself in the way he likes. This self-expression makes him stronger in his personality than those who do not express themselves.

A child who expresses himself knows who he is and knows his preferences and dislikes. As for a child who does not express himself, he is a child who lacks self-confidence and does not know what he likes or dislikes.

That is why kindergarten and primary children must be encouraged and taught to express themselves by writing a short essay topic, or a paragraph about myself, or even a long essay about myself. He can describe himself or write sentences about myself .

Preparing for an in-class essay

my self essay class prep

This is a bit of a lengthy one so strap yourselves in.

We have focused a lot of our time looking at how to prepare for exams and how to study or write notes, but we haven’t really had a look at how to prepare for something like an in-class essay. These are a little different because they’re not exactly a full-blown exam but are still a legit assessment that you need to know how to study for.

Everyone has a slightly different approach to this: Do you memorise the whole essay beforehand or do you just know themes and quotes and construct the essay on the day?

Personal opinion: I always liked going in with a pre-prepared essay, but one that was able to change and mould depending on the question. The thing is you need to be prepared at least 3 weeks in advance if you’re going to pick this option and I’ll explain why in a second.

That being said, we’re going to use this article to dive into how you would go about preparing for an in-class essay, no matter which method you use.

1. Start 3 weeks before

Being organised for these assessments is your key to doing well, so it’s important to start collecting your themes, quotes and ideas at least 3 weeks before so that you have enough time to formulate a structured response, have your teacher read over your drafts and give you feedback as well as practise. The essay you write 3 weeks out is not going to be the same essay you write in your assessment - and this is what we want.

This is probably considered the hardest step because it involves actually formulating a thesis and writing the bulk of your essay. But how do you actually do this?

Well, it comes down to personal preference and the way you like to write. Some people like to follow the PEEL structure of essay writing where you break your paragraphs down in order to include:

  • Point or topic sentence
  • Explanation
  • Link sentence

I find this a really good foundation to write your essays because it makes sure you have a solid and succinct overall structure. But it doesn’t stop there. You need to repeat these steps a couple of times per paragraph to get some good quality essay writing. We’ve written a whole post on how to use this essay structure, so check that out here if you’re still a little unsure.

Now that you’ve got the basic structure of your essay down, how do you push the essay up into the band 6 range?

I’ve asked our resident English content creators here at Atomi and here are the 3 things they recommend doing to ensure your essay reaches those higher bands:

a) Start off with a strong introduction

It’s super important that your intro has a very clear thesis and that the points you are planning to address in your essay are clearly outlined from the very beginning. This will prove to the marker that you have a clear understanding of your essay as a whole and that you are completely aware of the points you have to address in order to back up your thesis. You then have to make sure that the body of your essay clearly links to every point made in the introduction. If you follow a good structure, it will be easy to make sure that your paragraphs are doing this, which brings me to my next point...

b) Focus on your sentence structure to ensure you are analysing your evidence properly

But how do you do this?

We recommend the technique - verb - effect method. The reason we use this sentence structure is because it allows you to analyse how the composer has chosen specific techniques in order to teach the audience something.

Let me quickly break down how to actually construct sentences using this method:

  • Technique - This one is pretty straight forward. You need to first identify the technique used by the composer, e.g. metaphor or symbolism.
  • Verb - This is where you clarify what the technique is actually doing for the audience. For example, does it highlight, contrast or undermine a certain idea or notion?
  • Effect - This is probably the most important part of the sentence where you explain the impact this technique has on the audience. Does this technique allow you to prove your topic sentence or thesis, and how? This is where you create a link back to the main idea you’re focusing on in that paragraph.

A few of these per paragraph and you’ll be on your way to a band 6 essay. We go through some example paragraphs using this method in our English: How to Write an Essay video series. Check out the Sentences and Logic videos 😊.

c) Make sure you have a diverse range of evidence and related texts

Don’t just stick to the same old techniques of metaphor or simile. You need to be able to analyse the texts at a higher level in order to push your essay into the high band 5/band 6 range. This means diving deeper into the text and trying to find other forms of evidence that make your essay stronger. The same goes for related texts. Try experimenting with a more diverse range of related texts, for example, a poem instead of a movie or novel. This will prove to the marker that you have a more in-depth understanding of the meaning of the texts and that you are able to establish meaning in various ways in order to prove the point you’re arguing in your essay.

You now have the first draft of your essay. It’s time to send this through to your teacher for them to read and provide you with some feedback.

2. Re-work it

The next step comes after your teacher has sent you back their feedback on your essay. This step is important because your teachers are going to be the ones marking your in-class assessment, so their feedback will give you insights into what they’re expecting. Take what they're saying seriously and re-work your essay to implement their feedback as much as you can.

The process of handing your work in for marking, getting feedback and then re-working it should happen multiple times, not just once. This is how you can get your essay close to perfect.

3. Memorise

Once you have your essay as close to perfect as you can, you should still be about a week out from the assessment. It’s now time to start memorising your essay. Some of you may be shocked that you’re memorising this far out, but the memorising that’s happening now is important for practise purposes. You want to be able to know your essay enough so that you can do some practise questions closed book.

When it comes to memorising, everyone has their own way that works for them. For me, walking around my room saying my essays out loud, paragraph by paragraph until I remembered the whole thing was the only thing that worked. Some people find it easier to write out their essay over and over, but the thing about this is that it takes a lot longer and isn’t as efficient.

For a guide on exactly how to memorise long responses, check this out !

4. Practise

So you now have your essay written and memorised. Well done! But here’s where a lot of people go wrong because they go into the assessment and just regurgitate their memorised essay without changing it. This is bad. Don’t do this.

This is the number 1 mistake you can make because your teachers and markers will pick up on this instantly because it will be obvious that you haven’t explicitly answered the question.

Practise questions will help overcome this. Get your hands on as many practise questions as possible and give them a go. Start off doing them not under exam conditions. Have your pre-prepared essay in front you and work on moulding your essay and specifically answering the question. Hand these into your teacher for feedback and work with the feedback on your next attempt.

Once you feel confident with this, the next step is to introduce exam conditions so that you can practise moulding your essay in a high pressured environment where you’re relying on your memory rather than a cheat sheet. I would even go to the extent of writing out multiple exam questions, folding them up and then picking them out of a hat when you go to practise so that you can test your ability to answer an unseen question - one that you haven’t had prior time to think about, because after all, that’s what the in-class assessment will be like. Doing this also allows you to test your timing to know whether you can write your essay in the given time slot.

5. The night before the assessment

The night before is finally here. You are now ready. You’ve got your essay, you’ve received feedback from your teacher, you’ve made the amendments, you’ve practised it under exam conditions.

So what now?

Here’s what I would recommend doing:

  • Re-read your essay and make sure you’ve got it fully memorised;
  • Write it out under exam conditions (whilst timing yourself) one more time;
  • Read through your essay one more time;
  • Sleep early.

The next morning, make sure you have a good breakfast and then if you’re keen write your essay out one more time (this one’s optional).

You’re now ready to sit an in-class essay assessment.

Good luck! 💪
