However, the Sinhalese managed to maintain an independent kingdom around Kandy. The Portuguese were later removed forcibly by the Dutch. In 1796, it was named Ceylon by the British. Ceylon became an independent state in 1948 and was governed by the United National Party (UNP). In the 1956 elections, the Sinhalese nationalist Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) defeated the UNP. I’m from Sri Lanka. My homeland is Sri Lanka. Because it is a pearl found in the Indian Ocean, it is known as “the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” Sri Lanka is an Asian country. Sri Lanka is divided into nine provinces and 25 districts. Sinhala is our national language.

Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is the capital city of Sri Lanka. The national flag of Sri Lanka is known as the lion flag.

Tea, rubber, and coconut are the three main crops grown here.

• The national tree of Sri Lanka is the Ironwood tree (Naa tree).
• The national flower of Sri Lanka is the blue water lilly (Nil Manel).
• The national bird of Sri Lanka is the Ceylon jungle fowl (Wali Kukula).

Sri Lanka has extensive mountain ranges and gardens. Piduruthalagala is the highest peak. Mahaweli is the longest river. Bambarakanda is the tallest waterfall. Botanical gardens in Sri Lanka include Peradeniya, Hagalla, and Dalada Maaligaava is a temple of the tooth in Kandy.

Foreigners who like wild life visit the sanctuaries like Wilpatthu, Yala, Kumana, Wasgomuwa, Udawalawe and Sinharaja World Heritage Nature Reserve. Wilpatthu is famous for elephants and leopards. Muslims all over Sri Lanka fast during the month of Ramadan and celebrate Eid-al-Fitr festival at the end of it.

Water is very important for all human beings, animals and plants. Chemicals and other harmful substances pollute water. Humans pollute water in many ways. Insecticides, weedicides and fertilizers used in large quantities in farming are some examples of ways of polluting water. We should control ways of water pollution. We can do this by helping to keep our sources of water clean. In agriculture we should not overuse chemicals. Another way of preventing water pollution is to build cleaning treatment plants in factories. If we stop throwing waste into lakes, rivers and seas they will be clean and beautiful forever.

5. Is India a good place to live in?

But the check also showed that people don't have a truly good perception about India in the matters of raising children in the country or the status of women also.

In the list of stylish countries to raise children, India stands at 59th position. A disciplinarian nation like Singapore is ranked 22, and indeed countries facing internal strife analogous to Kenya and Egypt are placed above India in the list of stylish countries to raise children.

6. Why did the British give freedom to India?

World War II had a profound effect on the social powers because it completely destroyed their husbandry. Hitler destroyed the husbandry of Britain and France to such an extent that they were no longer suitable to financially maintain their military forces, and were hence unfit to contain the burgeoning freedom movements in their colonies. It's worth noting that Britain was in such bad shape that it entered about one-fourth of the total aid given under the Marshall Plan. 

Anyhow, Gandhi or any other leader, Britain would have left India in 1947 purely for financial reasons, due to its wholly collapsed economy. After WWII, Britain left not only India but nearly all its other goods, including Jordan in 1946, Palestine in 1947, Sri Lanka in 1948, Myanmar in 1948, Egypt in 1952 and Malaysia in 1957. 

For the same reason, France also had to grant independence to Laos in 1949 and Cambodia in 1953, and had to leave Vietnam in 1954; the Netherlands also left the ultimate of its colonies called Dutch East Indies, mainly Indonesia in 1949. Had there been no Hitler and no World War II, it most presumably would have taken another 30 or farther times for India and some of the other colonies to achieve independence.
