  • Using the LLM as a stepping stone to PhD study: How I came to PhD

llm with phd

By Luke Graham

My name is Luke Graham and I am coming towards the end of my second year of my PhD in the Law School at Lancaster University. I knew I wanted to do a PhD when I started getting really stuck into and enjoying my undergraduate dissertation a few years ago. I made this known to my dissertation supervisor Dr Amanda Cahill-Ripley and she really encouraged and guided me in the process of considering, and applying for, postgraduate study. After 3 years as an undergraduate I couldn’t afford to self-fund a PhD, and at the time the Government hadn’t yet extended the postgraduate loans to cover the cost of doing a PhD. So instead, I took advantage of the masters loan and studied a Masters degree to strengthen my chances of securing PhD funding from a Research Council.

Like my undergraduate degree, I studied for my Masters in the Law School. This was an incredible year for me. I was lucky enough to receive a number of opportunities to get involved with research projects and co-organise a conference alongside studying which gave me a firm footing. I applied for PhD funding to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) with the support and guidance of the Law School’s ESRC liaison, Dr Gary Potter. That’s the thing about the Law School, you can really build positive relationships with the staff and they genuinely do want to help students succeed. I found out in the March of my Masters year that I had been awarded funding and I know that this was partly due to the support I received from staff in the Law School.

The Masters year really allowed me to focus my studies and I was able to do much of my work with my PhD in mind. This meant that I was able to hit the ground running when I started my PhD. Even so, the transition between the two was not what I had expected. For the first time I had no short-term concrete deadlines and I’d say it took me a term to adjust into a PhD mindset. One piece of advice I’d give to anybody starting a PhD who will be based in Lancaster is to make use of your office space. I’ve made my office my own and I’m productive there. For me, it’s so important to have a clear divide between my PhD work and my personal life. I do my best not to do any PhD work outside of my office.

I view my PhD as training for my future career. Whether I end up as an academic or not, I know that the opportunities which I’ve been fortunate to experience alongside researching and writing have equipped me with, and bolstered skills, that employers are looking for. Plus, I’ll be a Dr! As a PhD student I’ve been fortunate enough to teach undergraduate students and to act as a writing tutor in the LAWs Clinic. These were new challenges and ones which I have really enjoyed and I have also secured a teaching qualification. I’ve also accessed training in relation to my PhD, with one of the benefits of being here at Lancaster being the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Research Training Programme.

I have been the representative for postgraduate research students in the Law School, sitting on the postgraduate committee. This has really allowed me to see how much work goes on behind the scenes to make the learning experience in the Law School as positive as possible for all students. As part of this role, I organised a writing retreat for the PhD students and the Law School funded this. The School regularly supports PhD student initiatives, for example the postgraduate conference that took place earlier this year (LINK).

Having studied for my undergraduate, Master’s and PhD at Lancaster, I have been here for 6 years now (almost all my adult life). I often say to people who ask me how I am not bored of being here yet, that taking on new challenges is the key to staying in any place for such a long time. Outside of studying, I’ve been fortunate enough to captain two different university sports teams, I’ve worked in Grizedale College as an Assistant Dean, I have undertaken research for staff in the Law School, and I even spent 15-months working in the student nightclub! The one thing all these experiences share is that I was working as part of great teams, and to me that’s incredibly important. So that would be my second piece of advice, find a sport or a society, find likeminded people, find something you love to do, and make sure it is separate to your studies. There's so much on offer at Lancaster it would be a real shame not to.

Ph.D. Program

The ph.d. in law degree.

The Ph.D. in Law degree program is designed to prepare J.D. graduates for careers as legal scholars and teachers through a doctoral program aimed at the production of a substantial body of academic research and writing under the close supervision of a three-member faculty dissertation committee. Unlike programs designed for students who wish to learn about law from the disciplinary perspectives of the social sciences or the humanities, the Ph.D. in Law is directed at students who wish to pursue advanced studies in law from the perspective of the law. This program offers emerging scholars an opportunity to contribute to the development of law as an academic field, and it provides an alternate pathway into law teaching alongside existing routes such as fellowships, advanced degrees in cognate fields, legal practice, and clerkships.

Because our entering Ph.D. students will have already completed their J.D. degrees, the anticipated course of study toward the Ph.D. in Law degree is three academic years and two summers in residence. In their first two semesters, Ph.D. students will enroll in courses designed to help them acquire the background and research skills needed to complete a dissertation in their field of interest and to prepare them for qualifying examinations that test the depth and breadth of the literacies and skills they have acquired. During their second year, students will prepare a dissertation prospectus and begin work on a dissertation. The dissertation may take the form of either three law review articles or a book-length manuscript and will make up a portfolio of writing that will be essential for success in the job market. Ph.D. students will also gain experience in the classroom, and receive the full support of Yale Law School’s Law Teaching Program , which has had remarkable success in placing graduates in tenure-track positions at leading law schools.

Ph.D. students receive a full-tuition waiver, a health award for health insurance coverage, and a stipend to cover their year-round living expenses, as well as support for participation in national and international conferences.

Applications for admission to the Ph.D. in Law program are available starting on August 15. The deadline for submission of all materials is December 15. Applicants to the Ph.D. in Law program must complete a J.D. degree at a U.S. law school before they matriculate and begin the Ph.D. program. Any questions about the program may be directed to Gordon Silverstein, Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, at [email protected] .

Working in the us after an ll.m..

Working in the US after an LL.M.

Finding work in the US post-LL.M. can be a challenge. In the cases where LL.M.s have been successful, how has it worked?

International students who want to work in the US after completing an LL.M. face an uphill battle.

Positions are competitive, there are visa hurdles to overcome, and then there’s the fact that an LL.M. doesn’t qualify you to practice law in the US, even if you have served as a lawyer in your home country.

As associate director of career development at Pepperdine University School of Law Aparna Gupta says, “it’s very hard for international students to compete with JD graduates for entry-level associate positions”.

llm with phd

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t positions available in the US that are both open to, and interesting for, LL.M. graduates.

Gupta says she has generally seen international LL.M. graduates who stay to work in the US move into one of two types of roles: as lateral associates within law firms, or as compliance officers.

“We have seen lawyers who have significant experience in their home countries or home jurisdictions,” she says, “who come here, get an LL.M. degree and then have an area of expertise in international law, or a language capacity the firm is seeking, and so we see [them] become a lateral associate at a law firm.”

“The other position we’ve been seeing are compliance officers,” says Gupta. These are “folks that have international expertise on laws and regulations. These are non-lawyer jobs but they require a great deal of knowledge about the law. Many of our international graduates can contribute that to international corporations here in the US.”

Where to find post-LL.M. roles in the US

So how do international LL.M. graduates secure these coveted roles?

Caroline T. Springer, Esq., executive director of graduate career & professional development at Georgetown University Law Center says law school careers fairs are a great place to start. “Law firms come to those fairs and hire students into those positions,” she says.

International LL.M. students have also had success making arrangements before commencing study, says Springer.

“A lot of times students are coming to a program in the US already having set up an arrangement with a firm,” she says, “because the company they work for in their home country has helped them make those arrangements with the firm here in the US.”

Springer recommends making the most of your law school’s alumni network, as well as any relevant internship opportunities.

Georgetown University Law Center’s location in Washington D.C. offers its students access to a number of international organizations, with which it has ongoing internship relationships.

“Some of our students are able to work at the World Bank, the IMF [International Monetary Fund], or the IFC [International Finance Corporation],” says Springer. “These are short-term consultancy roles, so they don’t typically convert into full-time positions.”

For one Georgetown Law graduate, though, it did.

An LL.M. graduate who secured a full-time role at the World Bank

Nikolaos Doukellis, originally from Greece, graduated from Georgetown University Law Center with an LL.M. in International Legal Studies in 2016.

“It had long been my interest to study and then work for some time in the US,” says Doukellis, “and thankfully that came to be. But I knew that it wouldn’t be very easy.”

During his studies at Georgetown Law, Doukellis was introduced to some alumni who worked at the World Bank in Washington D.C.

“I managed to leverage an internship opportunity there that Georgetown helped me identify, turning that internship into a permanent job,” he says.

llm with phd

Doukellis’ previous experience working with corruption back in Greece set him in good stead for his role at the World Bank where he ended up staying for two-and-a-half years, working in “the department that handles allegations of fraud and corruption with World Bank-funded programs”.

He recently moved into a new role in the US, this time in the private sector, as a senior associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers. “In this capacity I continue to work on cases of foreign corruption involving clients worldwide,” he says.

US visa opportunities for LL.M. graduates

For international LL.M. students wanting to stay and work in the US post-study, they will need to move off their student visa and on to a working visa .

LL.M. graduates are eligible to apply for the Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (commonly called the OPT) , which allows them to stay in the US for one year and take on internships or short-term roles relevant to their just-completed studies.

Those wishing to stay longer can move on to the H1B visa. However, places are competitive as the number of visas permitted each year is capped and applicants must first seek financial sponsorship from their employer.

“We have a number of students who apply for the OPT,” says Springer. “Then, if they find a position here and they’re working with an employer who is willing to sponsor them for the H1B, then they go ahead and submit that application.”

LL.M. graduate Doukellis says this is where working at the World Bank made life much easier.

“Working for the World Bank, because it’s an international organization, requires a special type of visa that’s issued by the bank itself,” he says. “So getting a role in an international organization like the World Bank doesn’t require the sponsoring you would need to work in the private sector.”

That part of working in the US has only caught up with Doukellis in his new role. He is currently in the process of obtaining visa sponsorship from PwC.

What if you want to practice law in the US?

Most international applicants to US LL.M. programs don’t set out with the aim of practicing law in the US after graduation.

“ The JD program sets you up to practice in the US,” says Springer. “The LL.M. doesn’t set you up to have a career of practicing law in the US.”

“We tell students if they want to have a career practicing law in the US, they should look at the JD.”

For those international LL.M. graduates who change their minds, and decide they would like to be able to practice law in the US, there are a few states where this is possible.

“It’s different state to state,” says Gupta at Pepperdine University School of Law. “You really have to see in which state you would like to practice, and follow the rules of that state. So, for example, states like California and New York, they do allow it.”

Usually applicants have to study for and pass the particular state’s bar and also provide transcripts from their law school in their home country.

Go home, gain experience, then make your way back to the US

For LL.M. graduates wanting to stay in the US to work, Gupta says it might work out better for them to go home after completing their LL.M. and work for a couple of years before coming back.

“Some of our best students have the most luck going abroad and using their language ability, gaining experience at the law firm, learning the firm’s values and the culture, and then finding positions at the same firm back in the US,” she says.

“Once they’ve spent a year or two, or even five years, at, say, a large law firm that has an office in Germany,” for example, says Gupta, “then they’re able to come and join the office here in New York or California, depending on where they take and pass the bar.” Of course, for some roles, passing the bar may not be required.

Gupta says she knows a current German LL.M. student, due to graduate this spring, who has set her sights on this long game.

“This student landed three different internships at some of the top law firms here in the US that have offices in Germany,” says Gupta, “with the understanding that once she is selected to be a lawyer there, contingent on her doing great work for that firm, she would potentially have the opportunity to become an associate at the law firm’s office in New York.”

“Once you get your foot in the door [at a firm], it’s much easier to come back to the states and practice here,” says Gupta.

Harvard Law School and University of Cambridge J.D./LL.M. Joint Degree Program

The Harvard Law School and  University of Cambridge  J.D./LL.M. Joint Degree Program enables Harvard J.D. candidates to earn a Cambridge LL.M. and a Harvard J.D. in a total of 3.5 years.

Students selected for the program spend their 3L year in Cambridge and are eligible to receive the Cambridge LL.M. at the end of the year upon successfully completing all LL.M. degree requirements. Students also simultaneously receive a semester’s credit toward their HLS J.D. This means that with one additional semester back at Harvard after their Cambridge study (i.e., a total of 3.5 academic years), they will have earned both a Harvard J.D. and a Cambridge LL.M. The HLS students are the only LL.M. students at Cambridge who are not required to have a J.D. or equivalent degree prior to enrollment.

Roadmap:  Lorea Mendiguren, Cambridge LL.M. ’23, J.D. ’24

Through her courses at HLS, the HLS-University of Cambridge JD/LL.M. Joint Degree Program, and her work experience, Lorea examined several areas of international and comparative law, including dispute resolution and international trade, emerging with a focus on data protection and privacy.

The University of Cambridge is renowned for the distinguished members of its faculty, many of whom are noted experts in their particular fields. Cambridge is also home to a number of research centers, such as the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, which offer lecture series and other activities to augment studies.

Many HLS students who read for their Cambridge LL.M. appreciate the different approach to learning law and value the opportunity to conduct independent research around their particular areas of interest. The program can provide especially helpful training for those thinking about pursuing more in-depth academic work. The HLS-Cambridge J.D./LL.M. Joint Degree Program also benefits students interested in learning about British or European law with an eye to practicing in Europe or for a transatlantic firm.

Up to six Harvard 2Ls are selected annually to spend their 3L year reading for the LL.M. degree in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The admissions process begins with an application through HLS in January of the candidate’s 2L year and ends with a decision by Cambridge in early spring for matriculation at Cambridge the following fall.

A Q+A with David Macauley ‘21

A q+a with tor krever ’12, timeline considerations.

Harvard University awards degrees three times annually — in March, May, and November. All Harvard University schools are required to follow this calendar. Students who are scheduled to complete their final HLS semester in the fall can expect to receive their degrees in March. The only degree ceremony is in May, and March degree recipients are welcome to attend the ceremony in the May following the completion of their degrees.

J.D./LL.M. alumni have reported that the extra time has, in many cases, been beneficial to their careers. Students have used that time to study for the bar, undertake a clerkship, engage in a fellowship or research, or travel. Several students utilized the additional time to study and sit for the California bar in addition to the New York bar; another completed a clerkship with the South African Constitutional Court.

HLS students tend to report that the LL.M., and the attendant realignment of their employment, is either an asset or not a factor in obtaining employment. Many employers appreciate the student’s extra academic training as well as the fact that they have gained an additional summer’s worth of work experience. They have not reported encountering any problems in lining up employment even though they completed their work at HLS in December rather than in May. Students who were placed within the same cohort as their original class report a steeper, though rewarding, learning curve.

Students who are considering how the HLS-Cambridge J.D./LL.M. Joint Degree Program might fit in with a job search can contact either an  OCS Adviser  or  OPIA Adviser .

The Maurer School of Law has provided resources and support to help me improve my English language skills. I would highly recommend the school to anyone looking to pursue a graduate degree in law. The professors are knowledgeable and humble, the library resources are exceptional, and the city of Bloomington is beautiful! Ibrahim Alhujaili

The LLM Pathway

Successful applicants are admitted first to the LLM Pathway program, a year-long program similar to conditional admission. In the Pathway, students will learn about the US legal system and master legal English while earning 12 English for law credits and four credits toward the LLM degree. Much like conditional admission, upon satisfactory completion* of the Pathway year, students then continue to the LLM degree program, where they will select courses to complete the remaining 20 credit hours needed to earn the degree. Two-year LLM students also have the option to specialize in one of six areas of the law .

Admission requirements

  • First degree in law (graduate degree in law or extensive practice experience may suffice in some cases)
  • TOEFL iBT 74+ or IELTS 6+
  • Completed application
  • Transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement
  • Résumé

Estimated tuition†

  • 12-credit Pathway program: $23,340
  • 24-credit LLM degree program: $46,680
  • Approximate total for two-year LLM with English for law: $70,020. Generous scholarships of up to $27,000 are available to successful applicants in the second year of the two-year LLM with English for law program.

Curriculum overview

*Satisfactory completion of the Pathway year is determined by maintaining a 3.0 GPA throughout the two semesters, obtaining the recommendation of the Pathway instructors, and making significant improvement on the TOEFL test, required at the end of the second semester.

†As of spring 2021.

LLM Program

The Queen's Master of Laws (LLM) degree is a nine- to twelve-month program that deepens students’ legal knowledge and research skills with a view to further studies at the doctoral level or careers in research, policy work or legal practice.

Candidates should have obtained high standing in an undergraduate or first law degree (LLB, JD or equivalent). In exceptional circumstances we will accept candidates whose previous degree(s) are not in law but in cognate fields.

Students have considerable freedom to design a course of study that meets their needs and aspirations.

Students interested in legal theory and legal philosophy should consider pursuing an  LLM with a Specialization in Political and Legal Thought.

All LLM students are required to take two graduate seminars,  Legal Research Methods & Perspectives;  and Advanced Legal Research , and complete a research project under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. Students have a choice as to the length of the research project and the number of other courses they take:

  • Thesis option:  two mandatory graduate seminars plus one additional course and a master's thesis not to exceed 35,000 words in length, exclusive of footnotes, endnotes, bibliography, appendices, tabulated data, tables of cases, and tables of contents, that must be defended orally before an examination committee.
  • Mini-Thesis option:  two mandatory graduate seminars plus three additional courses and a substantial graduate research project (or "mini-dissertation") of 13,000-18,000 words.
  • Course-Paper option:  two mandatory graduate seminars plus five additional courses and a graduate paper of 9,000-10,000 words.

While the Law School offers some dedicated graduate-level courses, most graduate courses are offered in conjunction with JD courses (though methods of assessment differ for graduate students in these classes).  Admission on a part-time basis is limited. Degree requirements for part-time students vary slightly from those for full-time students.

LLM students in the  International Law Program in England  may complete three courses at the Castle before arriving at Queen’s, allowing them to start – and finish – their studies three months earlier.

More information

The  School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs  offers a full list of learning outcomes on their website.

Practicing in Canada

Please note that obtaining an LLM or PhD in Canada does not qualify students who do not have an LLB or JD from a Canadian university to practice law in Canada. International students who are interested in practising law in Canada should contact the  National Committee on Accreditation .

Potential Applicants

If you are a potential applicant please see our Graduate Admissions Process for information and a link to the application portal.

Applicants do not contact potential supervisors prior to applying for admission.  Normally, supervisors are assigned when we admit applicants to our Program. Our application form allows applicants to suggest potential supervisors.  If there is someone you are interested in working with, please add that professor’s name to the application form. On the Research Interests webpage , you can find potential faculty supervisors under the various research areas. Availability of supervisors depends on current supervision numbers and if sabbaticals or leaves occur.
