Holiday homework activities for kindergarten.

Holiday Homework Activities For Kindergarten - Kindergarten is a whirlwind of exploration and advancement. Little minds are absorbing info like sponges, their interest driving them to learn more about the world around them. Worksheets for kindergarten can be an important tool in this journey, offering a structured way to practice vital skills while keeping things enjoyable and engaging.

The key is finding worksheets such as Holiday Homework Activities For Kindergarten beyond rote memorization and use a kindergartener's natural love for play. Here's a look at some essential skill areas where worksheets can be a powerful knowing aid, along with specific worksheet ideas to trigger your kid's interest

Developing a solid structure in literacy through letter acknowledgment and phonics.

  • Matching Mayhem: This classic worksheet features uppercase and lowercase letters for kids to match. Spice things up by including a visual aspect. Possibly the uppercase letters are hiding behind lively young puppies, while the lowercase letters are perched on vibrant ladybugs!
  • Coloring Consonants: Phonics come alive with coloring activities. Designate a various color to each consonant sound (b = blue, p = purple, etc) Children can then color in pictures based on the consonant noise they hear at the beginning of the word (e.g., a blue banana, a purple pig).
  • I Spy ... Sounds!: Take a timeless video game and provide it a phonics twist! Produce a worksheet with pictures of different things. Kids then search for and circle the pictures that start with a specific sound (e.g., "I spy something round and red that begins with the/ b/ sound ... an apple!").

2. Unlocking the Secrets of Numeracy (Quantification & Early Mathematics)

  • Dot-to-Dot Fun: Dot-to-dot worksheets provide an exciting method for kids to practice counting. By linking numbered dots, kids discover a surprise image and improve their counting abilities while doing so.
  • Roll & Race!: Incorporate dice into the learning process with a roll-and-color activity. The worksheet features a basic racetrack with numbered squares.
  • Kids chance, then color in the corresponding square on the track. The very first one to reach the finish line wins!
  • Count and Sort: Enhance your child's math skills by combining counting and shape recognition with a fun sorting activity. Our worksheet includes numerous shapes in various quantities. Your child will count each shape and then arrange them into designated locations, promoting both numeracy and spatial awareness.

3. Broadening Their Horizons (Science & Social Studies) using Holiday Homework Activities For Kindergarten

  • Nature Scavenger Hunt: Turn a worksheet into a real-life experience with a nature scavenger hunt. The worksheet lists different natural objects kids can discover outdoors (leaves, pinecones, and so on). They mark off each product they find, cultivating a gratitude for the environment.
  • Matching Manners: Introduce social-emotional knowing principles with a manners-matching activity. The worksheet shows pictures of various situations (sharing toys, stating please and thank you) alongside pictures of appropriate reactions. Kids can match the circumstances to the appropriate manners.
  • Encourage children to delve into their identities with a worksheet focusing on themselves. The worksheet permits children to develop a self-portrait, color in things they like, and tape-record their and age through writing or dictation.

22 Winter-Themed Activities for the Kindergarten Classroom

' src=

When it’s time to come back from winter break or Christmas break – it’s time to hit the ground running in kindergarten. There is explosive growth that happens from now until the spring in both reading and math.

Let’s capitalize on that learning-growth spurt and plan some great winter kindergarten activities .

holiday homework activities for kindergarten

Here are winter-themed math, science, and literacy-based activities, along with some art projects, crafts, and a set of free worksheets that I have found.

I hope they can be helpful to you as you make your January and February lesson plans.

Math activities

Here are two math resources that help you pick up where you left off in December and grow your learners.

Winter bump

free Wintertime adding bump game for kindergarten with 2 dice

Grab this free winter-themed math addition game for kindergarten. Your kinders will play “bump” using dice and linking cubes (or another manipulative) and work on adding numbers.

You’ll love that this game includes multiple levels so it’s already differentiated for you.

Frozen composing teens

Practice composing numbers 11-19 with this fun, Frozen-themed game . Students play on a printable game board, moving characters like Sven and Olaf after they make numbers using groups of tens and ones.

First one to the snow-capped village wins!

If you have a class that loves Frozen movies, you may just want to use this entire Frozen unit for the month of January.

Winter estimation

Winter estimation activity for kindergarten - cotton balls on polar bear outline

As students are learning larger numbers in the second semester, capitalize on seeing such numbers with this simple estimation activity .

All you need are fingerprints and cotton balls! So fun and perfect for winter.

I think it’d be a great tie in to using ten frames to predict how many and record their findings.

If you want to differentiate – just use the polar bear template laminated and use marshmallows to estimate. [Use mini-marshmallows for students who can count up to 100, regular-sized marshmallows for students working with numbers to 30, and jumbo marshmallows for students who can count to 20.]

Science activities

Let’s dig into science with simple, standards-based activities.

Expanding snowman

Ziploc bag full of snow with hand-drawn snowman face

When the snow hits your area (or grab a bag of ice at Sonic or ice cubes and grind them in a blender) then you’re ready to make an expanding snowman .

You can easily make this as a class, or the supplies are cheap enough for everyone to do the activity. Use brand-name freezer storage bags for best results.

Students watch Alka-seltzer interact with snow and you can observe and discuss what changes take place.

Did you know you could make this?

Penguin toy on top of white slime mountain

I think this super-strong snow slime recipe would make for the coolest writing springboard…

Let each kinder have a turn to create a scene – snap a photo and print it out for them to use as a book front cover or writing prompt illustration.

Go from science to writing in one awesome afternoon.

Here is a great alternative snow slime recipe that doesn’t require hard-to-find ingredients.

Igloo STEM challenge

Igloo made from mini-marshmallows on styrofoam plate

Students plan and design how to make an igloo in small groups using simple supplies. Then they test out their plan by using the simple materials.

Grab some marshmallows, frosting, and use the empty frosting container – this could be fun!

Turn this into an individual STEM challenge by substituting mini marshmallows and a condiment cup or styrofoam cup as a base.

How do penguins stay dry experiment

Water droplets form on a crayon-resist colored penguin

Explore how penguin feathers help them to stay dry in the Antarctic waters.

I like this idea since it is really simple and uses materials that are easy to produce in the classroom. Each student can do this activity.

Another good activity that explores how arctic animals (including some penguins) stay warm is to make a blubber mitt . We did this every year as a whole group experience.

An alternative idea is to crease the paper down the middle and only color on one half of the penguin. That way students can see what would happen if the oily residue didn’t exist on the penguins feathers.

Literacy-based activities

Let’s connect reading skills to all things winter.

The Mitten easy reader

Open The Mitten emergent reader

This is a free printable emergent reader that comes in four different levels. You can make a set to keep in your classroom or make one for students to take home.

This is based on the popular book, The Mitten.

Here are a few more resources and activities you my like based on The Mitten for kindergarten:

  • 50-page free “The Mitten” unit
  • Retell “The Mitten” to ‘The Farmer in the Dell’
  • Symmetrical mitten art project

Sneezy the Snowman

5 Clever Sneezy the Snowman Activities for kindergarten

Enjoy exploring these 5 clever Sneezy the Snowman kindergarten activities – they are awesome!

This story is hot on most kindergarten teachers’ lists. It’s a cute read aloud and these activities make it super simple to extend the story.

January kindergarten read-alouds

holiday homework activities for kindergarten

Read books! January is a great time to fit in extra read-alouds.

Here is a list of great read-alouds for January to go along with the winter theme (and many of these resources on this list).

Art activities

These art activities turn out beautiful. Each project focuses on the creative process and each kinder’s creation turns out unique.

Winter mittens art – warm and cold colors

Warm and cold colors mitten art project

These tissue paper mittens turn out beautiful. The warm and cold color contrast turns makes these stand out as a beautiful display.

Here’s how to make it:

  • Cut warm colors of tissue paper and glue it onto a mitten outline . Cover it completely and past the edges.
  • Cover it with Modge Podge to make it shiny and everything lay flat.
  • While it’s drying, paint a background piece of paper by dabbing on blue and white paint – mixing the colors with a sponge.
  • Add white snowflakes (maybe stickers, stamps, confetti or die cuts) on the blue background.
  • Cut out the dry mitten.
  • When everything is dry, glue (or hot-glue) a clothespin on to hang the mitten in front.

Pull-off polar bear paint project

Polar bear imprint left behind with paint around

Oh my goodness. I love this pull-off painting project with winter colors ! Although – you could totally do it with any shape if you didn’t want to do a polar bear…

Use a combination of strong fingerpaint paper, tempera paints in blue and white, and an artic animal cut from a piece of newsprint paper.

The process is rather simple, a little messy and the final product turns out awesome.

Oil pastel and watercolor snowflakes

Kindergartner painting with watercolors around a snowflake

We did this and I loved it! {okay, my students loved it too}

Investigate how the shapes of snowflakes are unique (using your favorite books and videos) and then create a snowflake masterpiece .

Students will draw a snowflake using a pattern, outline it with white or gray oil pastels. Then by painting a background in shades of blue and purple watercolors, the final product is just as unique as each snowflake!

Snow crafts

Here are some snow-related crafts that are just right for the kindergarten classroom.

Snowman craft

holiday homework activities for kindergarten

Cut some simple shapes to make this snowman craft . The perspective of the snowman looking up to the sky is what makes this uber-cute.

You’ll need construction paper, scissors and crayons or markers to make this one happen.

Planning for a sub this month? Stash this project away for them to work on with your class.

Snowman directed drawing

Row of kid-drawn snowmen

This turns out so sweet! A snowman directed drawing art activity with step by step directions so everyone can do it

Sponge-painted snowflakes

Blue snowflake with glitter cutout

Cut a large, simple snowflake shape from blue construction paper to make these sponge-painted snowflakes .

Make splotches of blue and white paint and then dab to begin blending the colors together. Finish off with some glitter. Beautiful!

Other winter resources

Here are a few more worthwhile-mentions of winter-themed resources I didn’t want you to leave without seeing.

Paper plate snowman

Kid behind paper plate snowman cutout

Snap a quick cute photo with this easy paper plate snowman craft . You can also skip the popsicle stick and print an enlarged photo of your students face in the hole.

This would make a great display piece to accompany a writing prompt of “if I were a snowman.”

Winter worksheets

holiday homework activities for kindergarten

Oh man, you know that I loathe worksheets , right? But, I also know that a time comes when you need to pull one out or find one you like and want to use it in your centers as a rinse-off overhead .

So, if you need some worksheets to stash in your substitute folder for January – this printable worksheet set is just right for kindergarten standards.

Let’s wrap it up

There you have it – winter activities for a kindergarten classroom that are fun and hands-on.

I hope these can help you save time as you plan your lessons.

The problems represent a number of themes from the holiday season: snowmen, reindeer, decorations, holiday snacks, jingle bells and sleigh rides, bells, mistletoe, garland, bows, ornaments, poinsettias, toy workshops and even football!

Please find below a brief description of each of the free downloads .

Holiday & Christmas Math Problems for Grades K–2

Kindergarten: Addition and subtraction within ten is the subject using snowmen, reindeer, gingerbread men and bells.

Grade 1: Counting on and the relationship between addition and subtraction within 100 including comparing numbers are used to solve problems about a sleigh ride, decorating the tree with ornaments and jingle bells. A great opportunity to sing the song!

Grade 2: Of course we are starting to get into bigger numbers here and using more than one operation in a problem. Arrays using addition set a foundation for multiplication concepts. Students can discuss Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker , gingerbread cookies and a holiday train ride.

Summer Homework for Kindergarten

I wanted to provide my students with an engaging and simple way that they could keep up their skills while still enjoying their summer vacation. So, I created a personal workbook of fun summer-themed math and literacy printables for each of my kiddos. But these summer printables don’t actually have to go in a folder at all. They can be printed off as needed and used in June for those of us still in school, or in summer school, or just certain pages can be sent home, etc.

Today I want to give you some of my favorite activities from this summer homework resource for FREE , but be sure to grab the whole Kindergarten Summer Homework pack which includes 91 pages of low-prep, engaging activities for your students!

Check out a couple of the activities included in this freebie Kindergarten Summer Homework sampler pack:

Ice Cream Number Bonds

Students will love strengthening their addition skills while building number bonds to 10 in this Ice Cream Number Bonds printable . There is a number line included for students to refer to, if needed.

After the kids have filled in the missing numbers to complete the equations, they can color the ice cream scoops. We like to make them look like our favorite flavors of ice cream. So simple and so fun!

Students will love strengthening their addition skills while forming number bonds to 10 in this Ice Cream Number Bonds printable.

Word Family Popsicles

Combine word family practice and color recognition skills with this Word Family Popsicles printable activity .

Students begin by reading the words on the popsicles. Then they use the color key to determine which color to make their popsicles based on the short vowel sounds. Coloring is always a hit with my kids so I just knew they would be all in on this word family activity.

Combine word family practice and color recognition skills with this Word Family Popsicles printable activity.

Here’s to a fun, happy summer, where the only slide we see is a water slide!

15 Holiday Reading Activities for Kids

15 holiday reading activities for elementary & kindergarten students (with holiday worksheets pdf formatted - no-prep).

(Or very little prep is the goal anyway) Since we mamas and teachers are so very busy during the holidays, we need some great ideas to keep our young readers moving forward to become excellent readers, even when on break. So, be sure to grab these holiday reading activities that can be helpful at home to spur on your child to read.

Some of them include things you are already doing (and didn't know you were!), and some of them can be very targeted to the skills that your beginner needs to improve in.

You can target sight words, phonics, comprehension, fluency, and more while reading at home with your child.

And, when all else fails, break out a good book and just simply READ ALOUD to your kiddo. It will do wonders for their skills in reading!

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. You can learn more about that here .

  • 1. Sight word activity bundles

I'll start with one of the "bundles" that I sell here on My Three Readers! You can grab this set of printables that target Fry's first 100 sight words and work on them through the holidays.

So far included in the bundle are activities for Fall and Winter (holidays), but I'll also be updating with new holidays as the year progresses.

  • 2. Head to the Library

When was the last time you took a leisurely trip to your local library? You can check online (below) to see where yours is, and enjoy all the books and activities that are offered.

Lots of libraries even have classes, and seasonal festivities to get kids stirred up to read. Check yours out!

  • 3. Listen to Audiobooks

Another option to borrow at your library, you can download or stream audiobooks to get reading in.

You might think that listening to books read aloud is not as good as reading itself, but there are benefits to hearing a great storyteller. Kids who hear books read aloud to them read better in the long run, with better fluency and confidence.

You can also use Audible as an option for audiobooks (you get a free audiobook every month with it, and a free trial to start). You can also check out my review of Audible here to look more into it.

  • 3. Get family members to read aloud.

Everyone in the family can get involved! Grab grandparents, aunts and uncles to read aloud during the holidays.

It's well-known that pets and animals are calming for kids and people. You can have your child read aloud to the dog and your dog will be a captive audience.

And don't forget the benefit of an older sibling. Ask an older brother or sister to read aloud to the younger, and then take turns. There are so many benefits to this. It encourages bonding between the kids, patience for the older, encouragement for the younger, and it even takes a little off your plate.

  • 4. Download reading apps on your child's tablet.

If your kiddo has a tablet or device that she uses regularly, take the extra step to download educational apps so that learning can take place while having fun, too.

You can check out my reviews on both ABCmouse for the younger ones learning to read, and also Adventure Academy for the older kids. Both cover reading, math, science and more!

  • 5. When baking and cooking, have your child read aloud from a recipe or cookbook.

Plus, you'll have something yummy to eat afterward. You can cook from your own recipes, or you can grab a kid's cookbook to work from. Here are a few from Amazon you could use:

  • 6. Work on printable phonics activities and word families.

If you have a young reader, chances are that you need to either introduce or keep going over the basic rules of phonics and word building. Here are some great activities from the Playdough to Plato website that you can grab and use with very little prep:

  • 7. Do a "reader's theater" at the dinner table.

Pick a story that your family loves to read. Search online for a script to go along with that story, and then recreate it at home.

If you can't find a reader's theater script for a story, make up your own, or even just come up with one on the fly.

Bonus points if you find ways to dress up as the character and really get into it!

  • 8. If your family participates in the Advent, choose something your child can read aloud each night.

It can be a simple Scripture each night, or anything short and sweet that is significant to your family.

You can check out this printable Advent Calendar I created for any family - but actually perfect for beginning readers..

Our family has loved to read the "Jotham" series of a young boy in biblical times who goes on an adventure.

  • 9. Choose book box sets as a gift for your child.

Not only will these book box subscriptions be fun to receive at home for new reading material each month, but they are a GREAT idea for a gift! Click on the picture below to see what these book box subscriptions are all about, or you can check out this article about the 17 best kids book subscriptions .

  • 10. Head to the local bookstore that has a coffee shop and go on a "book date".

You don't even have to purchase a book (unless you have the budget to treat!). But you can browse around the shop, get an idea of what books your child likes, and what his interests are.

Keep a running list of the books that your child likes, and grab those books from the library next time you head that way.

And then sit down for a nice hot cup of cocoa at the adjoining café. Voila! A wonderful book "date" with your child.

  • 11. Have your child send cards to friends and/or family (and write in the cards).

If you are a family who sends out Christmas cards, or New Year's cards every year, get your child involved in signing the cards and writing a sweet note inside.

You can also teach your student how to send mail, and get your child to use their very best handwriting to address the envelopes.

  • 12. Have your child fill out the "To" and the "From" on the gift tags for presents.

A simple job, but what a help this could be! When you are busy filling out the tags for all the gifts before you head over to Grandma's house, set your child down at the table and practice filling out those gift tags.

And maybe treat with a cookie for a job well done. 🙂 Yum!

  • 13. Turn on the closed-caption option when you watch holiday movies and t.v.

When my husband and I first started having kids, sometimes we wanted to watch a show, but we wanted the room to be silent. So, we would turn the volume down waaay low, and turn on the closed captioning.

If you have never used it before, you think it might be annoying. But after a while, you don't even see it anymore!

And this is a great and super easy way to get kids to associate the printed word with what is being said on the screen. Just something to consider!

  • 14. When travelling, play the alphabet game.

Generally a lot of us like to travel when we get a break during the holidays. Sometimes it's to go visit family or friends, and sometimes it's just to go take a much-needed vacation.

So take advantage of that travel time! And - it doesn't always have to be on a digital device. It can be games that the family can have fun playing together.

One of the classics that our family plays is the alphabet game. Whoever sees and "A" on a sign ahead shouts "A!" and that "A" is taken. Now that person gets to move on to letter "B", but everyone else is still on "A". And sometimes when the kids were a little younger, we'd break it up into teams so that the little ones get some help going through the alphabet. Good times!

  • 15. Choose educational, reading-focused videos for your child's tablet or device.

Most likely, your child will be using a tablet or some device for entertainment over the holiday break. (Here is an article I wrote on which are the best tablets for kids - especially for reading!).

You can bookmark some educational videos on your child's tablet or phone to watch, and they'll be entertained without even knowing that they might be learning something too! Here is a fun one from ABCmouse that you can find straight from YouTube:

Go have a great time on your holiday! Whether it's Christmas winter break, spring break, or summer, if you are purposeful about it, you can definitely get some reading time in with a little bit of creativity.

Have fun reading!
