Chemistry PhD Program

The University of Pennsylvania is an internationally renowned research institution that attracts the best students from the United States and around the globe. The Graduate Program is designed for students who wish to earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry while undertaking cutting edge research. The program provides students with the necessary theoretical background and hands-on training to become independent and highly successful scientists.  Graduate students achieve mastery of advanced chemistry topics through courses in different subdisciplines. Broad exposure to current research also occurs via four weekly departmental seminar programs and many interdisciplinary, university-wide lecture series.

Currently, faculty, students, and postdoctoral associates in Chemistry work in the fields of bioinorganic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, chemical biology, biophysical chemistry, bioinformatics, materials science, laser chemistry, health related chemistry, structural and dynamical studies of biological systems, X-ray scattering/diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, applications of computing and computer graphics, as well as investigations of chemical communication and hormone-receptor interactions. Many research groups combine different techniques to explore frontier areas, such as nanomaterials applied to biology, photoactive biomolecules, and single-molecule imaging. Novel synthetic procedures are under constant development for targets ranging from super-emissive nanoparticles to highly specialized drug molecules and giant dendrimers, which are being explored, for example, as drug-delivery systems. The Research Facilities in the Department of Chemistry provide a strong technology base to enable the highest level of innovation. Graduate students are a driving, integral force at Penn Chemistry.

An advanced degree represents demonstrated scholarship as well as intellectual independence and stands as a symbol of continuing development. The Graduate Program in Chemistry will provide a platform from which one may build expertise and continue a life-long process of inquiry and growth. It is not the intention of this program to provide detailed training in every aspect of chemistry or its applications. Rather, it is our goal to provide the fundamentals for a much-expanded personal development, provide the environment where intellectually active people may thrive, and provide the facilities to conduct research to learn new chemistry. The faculty provides a number of aids in this process of preparation including graduate courses, seminars, examinations, and considerable personal assistance and advice. Although the emphasis of graduate education is on student initiative, all programs have several mileposts to assist both the faculty and students.

fully funded phd programs in chemistry 2023

PhD Degree Requirements

  • Successful completion of 18 hours of graded research relevant coursework (typically six courses) and the  CHEM 7010-7031  professional development courses with course grades of B- or better.
  • Total course credit accumulation of at least 72 hours (that may include hours of research but must include at least 24 graded course hours) with at least a B cumulative average.
  • Successful completion of the Candidacy Examination.
  • Presentation of research in the third year poster session.
  • Completion of a written dissertation that describes the research and presents results suitable for publication in the scientific literature. The dissertation must be approved by a Doctoral Examining Committee comprised of the student’s Advisory Committee and one or more faculty members from outside the Chemistry Department.
  • Successful oral presentation of the dissertation work in a seminar to faculty and students.
  • Successful oral defense of the dissertation to the Doctoral Examining Committee

It is expected that these requirements will be satisfied before the end of the student’s fifth year in residence. Extensions to this five-year rule may be granted with approval of the research advisor and the Graduate Studies Committee.

Failure to satisfy these requirements will preclude readmission to the Chemistry Department Doctoral Program. In such cases the student may be eligible for the M.S. degree.

Financial Support for PhD Students

All students admitted to the Ph. D. program in Chemistry are offered a financial package providing full remission of tuition and fees, a single-person health insurance premium, and salary (for 2024-25 the salary support is  $32,500 ). Salary support is typically provided for first-year students in the form a Teaching Assistantship (TA), for working up to 20 hours a week as a TA, and through a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) for students in years two through five. (Although TA positions are available to PhD students in years 2-5, the majority are supported from research grants or fellowships). This award package will be renewed for five years, contingent on satisfactory academic performance, successful fulfillment of assigned duties as a teaching or research assistant, and compliance with all applicable University, School, and departmental policies.

Professor Wender discusses chemistry with his graduate students.

Doctoral study in chemistry at Stanford University prepares students for research and teaching careers with diverse emphases in basic, life, medical, physical, energy, materials, and environmental sciences.

The Department of Chemistry offers opportunities for graduate study spanning contemporary subfields, including theoretical, organic, inorganic, physical, biophysical and biomedical chemistry and more. Much of the research defies easy classification along traditional divisions; cross-disciplinary collaborations with Stanford's many vibrant research departments and institutes is among factors distinguishing this world-class graduate program.

The Department of Chemistry is committed to providing academic advising in support of graduate student scholarly and professional development.  This advising relationship entails collaborative and sustained engagement with mutual respect by both the adviser and advisee.

  • The adviser is expected to meet at least monthly with the graduate student to discuss on-going research.
  • There should be a yearly independent development plan (IDP) meeting between the graduate student and adviser. Topics include research progress, expectations for completion of PhD, areas for both the student and adviser to improve in their joint research effort.
  • A research adviser should provide timely feedback on manuscripts and thesis chapters.
  • Graduate students are active contributors to the advising relationship, proactively seeking academic and professional guidance and taking responsibility for informing themselves of policies and degree requirements for their graduate program.
  • If there is a significant issue concerning the graduate student’s progress in research, the adviser must communicate this to the student and to the Graduate Studies Committee in writing.  This feedback should include the issues, what needs to be done to overcome these issues and by when.

Academic advising by Stanford faculty is a critical component of all graduate students' education and additional resources can be found in the  Policies and Best Practices for Advising Relationships at Stanford  and the  Guidelines for Faculty-Student Advising at Stanford .

The PhD programme in Chemistry aims to train highly qualified professional subjects, able to organize and manage research activities in Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, as well as in other sectors in which chemistry plays a significant  role. Attention will be devoted to the multidisciplinary aspects of the research and to its integration with related disciplines (e.g., Physics, Biochemistry, Engineering), in order to stimulate creative thinking and originality. The educational objectives of the PhD programme also include the achievement of skills relating to the organization and management of the research, the presentation and discussion of the results, the writing of reports and scientific publications, the study of issues related to intellectual property and technology transfer . The PhD programme is divided into two curricula that share the general training objectives listed above but differ in  the final purposes of the research activities.

The main activity of the PhD student in Chemistry is the research activity, conducted in University laboratories or in Research Institutions in agreement with the University of Bologna, and consisting of laboratory activity with access to instrumentations of various levels of complexity. The experimental research activities involve the use of advanced scientific instrumentation, including large equipments centrally managed by the Departments and may require access to instruments operated by national and international agencies (e.g., synchrotron, high-performance computing processors, etc.). In parallel to the experimental research activities, the PhD students will also undertake documentation and bibliographic searches using the material available in the libraries of the Departments or accessed online through the computer facilities and/or the University Library System. The training activities take place at different levels and are organized according to content (basic courses and advanced courses on a multiple choice basis, courses chosen between those offered in University degree courses or second-level University masters). In addition, PhD students are required to attend at seminars and workshops, as well as to national and international schools and conferences.

The research training activities of the PhD students are organized at different levels according to their content. In the PhD Programme both basic teachings and courses dealing with specific topics related to the various research fields are organized. In the three-year PhD period the student must acquire at least 13 CFUs, preferably attending the courses offered by the doctoral programme. In addition, the student can choose teachings offered by other PhD Schools, by other degree courses or by second-level masters within the university. All courses have some kind of final assessment. PhD students are expected to attend seminars and workshops, as well as other activities "self-managed" by the students (e.g., workshops for the presentation of the research activities, journal clubs, etc.). Finally, the PhD students must attend at least one school and one conference, either national or international.

The PhD in Chemistry provides the internationalization of the curriculum operating at different levels. Each student is required to carry out research abroad for a period of at least 6 months. Participation to international schools and conferences is also mandatory, as well as attendance at seminars organized by the Departments proposing the PhD programme and often held by researchers from research institutions and universities abroad. Students can also join international research projects and scientific initiatives involving the research groups in which they are working. The PhD program is advertised to attract foreign students and allows developing PhD thesis in cosupervision with foreign research institutions. There are currently around 10 foreign students enrolled in the PhD programme, most of them are financially supported by international mobility programs (e.g., Erasmus Mundus Action 1, Marie Curie or China Scholarship Council). At the moment many co-tutelle  agreements are active.

The products and the expected results of the research activity of PhD students are those recognized by the international scientific community. In particular, at least two products related to participation in national and international conferences or schools (e.g., posters, oral presentations, publication of reports, etc.) are expected during the three-year PhD period for each student. The achievement of this goal will be assessed during the periodical evaluations of the PhD students’ activity. It is also expected that during the PhD period, and in any case within one year after the conclusion of the doctorate, each student has produced - as author or co-author - at least two publications (or possibly patents) related to the research activity.

PhD Stipend Extensions for Students Impacted by the COVID Pandemic

Boston University believes it is crucial to ensure that current PhD students who have had their progress impeded by the pandemic are able to complete their degrees. While individual PhD programs and the schools/colleges in which they are housed are the primary source of academic and financial support for PhD students, in rare circumstances, programs and schools/colleges may not have adequate resources to support all students whose progress has been hindered by the pandemic. For this reason, the Office of the Provost has established a fund to support PhD stipend extensions necessitated by this circumstance. Learn more about this funding opportunity and how to apply .

Please note that this program will end after the 2023-2024 academic year, concluding in early spring 2024 for logistical and operational purposes.

An M.Sc. or MS in Chemistry can lead to careers in research, teaching, academia, and many other industries.

“Full funding” is a financial aid package for full-time students that includes full tuition remission as well as an annual stipend or salary during the entire program, which for Master’s degrees is usually 1-2 years. Funding usually comes with the expectation that students will teach or complete research in their field of study. Not all universities fully fund their master’s students, which is why researching the financial aid offerings of many different programs, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad, is essential.

The  ProFellow Database  for graduate and doctoral study also spotlights external funding opportunities for graduate school, including dissertation research, fieldwork, language study, and summer work experiences.

Funding Your Ph.D. Education

At the I School, all our Ph.D. students receive funding packages with a minimum of six years of financial support through a combination of fellowships, research positions, and academic student employment. Details of individual funding packages may vary; in order to take full advantage of offered funding, students need to remain in good academic standing and advance to doctoral candidacy in normative time to degree, and may need to meet other funding conditions of specific fellowships or positions.

In the first year, I School Ph.D. students receive fellowship support to cover all tuition and fees, including Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition and the Student Health Insurance Fee, and a stipend for living expenses. For the academic year 2023–2024, the minimum first-year I School Ph.D. student 12-month stipend is $40,000.

After the first year, Ph.D. students are typically funded through graduate student academic appointments or research positions for up to four years (eight semesters). In addition to an hourly wage, students receive fee remission that offsets a portion or all of their tuition and fees. For more information, see Graduate Student Academic Appointments and Fee Remission .

Some students continue their research positions during the summer. The I School also offers limited summer grant opportunities for Ph.D. students who have no other summer funding sources secured.

After Ph.D. students pass their qualifying exam and advance to doctoral candidacy, the Berkeley Doctoral Completion Fellowship (DCF) provides eligible students with one year (two semesters) of tuition remission and a stipend for living expenses. Students are expected to make every effort to meet DCF eligibility conditions in order to take advantage of this funding opportunity.

The University also awards through competition a limited number of merit- and need-based fellowships each year. See University Fellowships for further details.
