“Frida Kahlo, The Immersive Biography” has officially opened to the public with an in-depth look at the life and experiences of the aforementioned artist. The 90-minute installation was co-created by the Frida Kahlo Corporation and Layers of Reality, a renowned digital arts center in Spain, and utilizes seven different transformational spaces to really explore the Mexican artist’s life, works and why she continues to inspire people to this day.

As you explore the installation, you’ll find that it has no actual works of Kahlo throughout it. Instead, you’ll find different aspects of the artist brought to life. There are several walls throughout the exhibition that detail the many facets of Kahlo, in English and in Spanish, which will have you learning more about her life than you knew before. The exhibition aims to be fun as well as educational for its guests.

Along the way, you’ll find installations that chronicle different parts of Kahlo’s life, including a bus accident that altered the course of Kahlo’s life forever. Another installation explores the aftermath of that accident, highlighting the various health issues that Kahlo endured as a result.

Kids can also get a kick out of the room “La Rosita,” a room based on where Kahlo would teach art classes to kids and teens. In this room, you can color in a picture and have it displayed on a big screen for your fellow visitors to see. Nearby, there is also a mirrored little wing that puts you right in the middle of art styles inspired by Kahlo’s work.

One of the marquee installations is the 30-minute original presentation that highlights historical photos of Kahlo during pivotal moments in her life. The images and graphics come to life across the entire room, including on the floor.

One of the highlights of this experience is a virtual reality station. Once you put on your headset, you are whisked into a new immersive journey that takes you through Kahlo’s bedroom, where she spent a lot of her time, as well as through some of her inspiration for her art. The exhibit also has a cashless giftshop to shop through and several photo opportunities, including a photo booth that puts you in a Kahlo-inspired piece of art.

See Inside the Powerful New Immersive Frida Kahlo Show in Brooklyn That Attempts to Depict What the Artist Could Not

The show offers a deep dive into the life and work of the legendary Mexican artist.

Installation view of

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who undeniably has already garnered a cult-like following of loyal fans and admirers over the past several decades, is the latest artist to get the so-called “immersive” treatment in New York.

Notwithstanding the fact that some observers feel as if we are nearing the saturation point with these splashy—and typically pricey—events, this one is a thoughtful, yet fun, and often very trippy deep dive into the artist’s rich life that also had more than its fair share of struggles.

Unlike other wander-through immersive installations that rely heavily on music and slide projections, this exhibition, staged at a sprawling warehouse in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn, uses a wide variety of show platforms to tell Kahlo’s story. After passing through elaborately lit ofrendas (offerings), flowers, and hanging vines, visitors are greeted with wall texts, written in both English and Spanish, that go deep into the artist’s life. They cover everything from her childhood (including the horrific injuries she sustained in a bus accident that resulted in lifelong consequences) to her development as an artist, wife, and mother, including her often tortured marriage to artist and muralist Diego Rivera, whose career often overshadowed her achievements during their lifetimes.

One holographic, multi-dimensional video installation, The Accident , depicts the impact of the bus collision by showing slow-motion abstracted fragments colliding and shattering. Frida herself, who often painted self portraits to tell stories about her life, said she could never depict it because she was unable to reduce it to one image. Noting that she was left with her spinal column broken in three points, a fractured clavicle, broken ribs and other major injuries, the work asks: “How many images are necessary to reflect pain?” according to the wall text accompanying the work.

In all, there are seven different interactive rooms complete with 360-projects, virtual reality experiences, historical photographs, installations, and more. In total, the journey takes about 90 minutes and is appropriate for children and adults alike. One particular VR installation puts the viewer in the famous bed, where Kahlo recovered from her injuries and includes a trippy ride through landscapes that echo her Surrealist paintings and iconic imagery.

Brooklyn is the fifth city to host the show following other stops in the U.S. and Europe. The exhibition will continue on to venues in Latin America next year.

The show gives guests “the opportunity to look beyond the surface of her world-famous artwork and get to know the woman who overcame hardship, created beauty from pain, broke boundaries, and continues to inspire today,” according to a statement from organizers Primo Entertainment and Loud and Live.

Frida Kahlo – The Immersive Biography

The Immersive Biography is a journey through the life story of Frida Kahlo, one of the world’s most iconic artists. Accompanied by a unique collection of photographs capturing known and unknown moments from the artist’s life, using the technique of video mapping, it creates a memorable experience for visitors by transporting them into Frida’s world.

The theme explored in the experience is the difficult life of Frida Kahlo, marked by prolonged illness and great passions. Frida Kahlo was able to turn her immobility into opportunities and her suffering into works of art full of energy.  The stories of her passion for art, Mexico and her tormented love for Diego Rivera, her life partner, are told through an introductory area, a 30-minute immersive experience and a virtual reality zone.

The exhibition is therefore a unique opportunity to understand the story of a great artist through the most innovative technologies. Bin Jelmood House (Lower Gallery Room)

Frida Kahlo, The Immersive Biography opens in Brooklyn

“Frida Kahlo, The Immersive Biography” has arrived in Brooklyn. A co-creation between the Frida Kahlo Corporation and Layers of Reality, a Spanish digital arts center, the immersive biographical exhibition spans seven different transformational spaces and includes an award-winning VR experience enabling the visitor to enter the life and work of the Mexican artist who, in the 21st century, continues to inspire and be more relevant than ever.

The exhibit, also dubbed “Frida Kahlo, The Life of an Icon," showcases how the artist’s aesthetic continues to be influential to everything from fashion to feminism to inclusivity. Over the years her look has inspired designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Dolce & Gabbana and Ricardo Tisci at Givenchy. Her bold unibrow challenged beauty standards not only of her time but which are slow to be dismantled even today, and her pride in her Mexican roots she literally wore on her sleeve. She donned the traditional Tehuana dress whether to schmooze with the Rockefellers and Henry Ford in New York or to exhibit her art with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp in Paris. Flamboyant, charming and intensely patriotic, the look was completed with a high chignon accentuated with a garland of flowers and dangling earrings. Contemporary examples of Kahlo’s signature full skirts, and embroidered blouses created by the Oaxacan matriarchal society from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec are on display in the exhibit.

Frida Kahlo Immersive Biography

Fashion icon Frida Kahlo continues to influence and inspire

Kahlo’s colorful layers and vibrant textiles served not only as vehicles of creative self-expression but also to conceal the serious injuries from the 20 bone fractures, many to the spine, that she incurred in a tram accident when she was eighteen years old and which caused her extreme pain for the remainder of her life. The jewelry, flowers, and bold lip she wore were designed to draw the gaze upwards, towards her face. Underneath her clothes she wore back braces, shoes with a built up sole and in her later years a prosthetic leg. But as her body deteriorated her artistic output soared, even though she often had to create from the confines of her bed.

Showcasing a combination of digital art, historical photographs, projections, and installations, the exhibit allows the visitor to walk, or in some cases turn in circles, to catch the ever changing imagery bouncing off the walls. The emblems from Kahlo's creative world are most affectingly communicated through a VR experience exclusive to those who purchase VIP tickets which transports the guest on an exhilarating trip along the dirt main street of a Mexican town lined with technicolor classic cars while flowers spin and watermelon slices whizz by your nose, and hummingbirds flutter among tropical flora and fauna, and the magnolia, pear cactus flower and other assorted elements of Kahlo’s beloved garden dance with skulls and fruit.

An immersive Frida Kahlo exhibit is opening in Brooklyn next month

"Frida Kahlo, The Life of an Icon" will take over the Immersive Pavilion near Dumbo.

Anna Rahmanan

Soon, you’ll get to see the work of Frida Kahlo as never before.

”Frida Kahlo, The Life of an Icon” is a new experience co-created by the Frida Kahlo Corporation and Spanish digital arts center Layers of Reality set to debut at the Immersive Pavilion in Brooklyn this October.

According to an official press release, the 90-minute walk-through show will utilize “seven different transformational spaces, enabling one to enter the life and work of the Mexican artist who, in the 21st century, continues to inspire and be more relevant than ever.”

RECOMMENDED: An immersive Claude Monet experience is coming to NYC this fall

Those spaces include “infinite symbology, a reactive sensory installation; areas featuring 360º projections and the use of a virtual reality system that will quite literally transport you inside Kahlo’s most famous works.

Prior to its New York debut, the exhibit toured Europe and was also mounted in other American cities, including Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque. It is scheduled to proceed to cities in Canada and some Latin American countries.

The exciting piece of news follows an announcement regarding a Broadway-bound show about the star dubbed Frida, The Musical , which is scheduled to premiere in the Theater District in 2024.

Born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, the now-iconic painter rose to fame through her many portraits and self-portraits inspired by Mexican artifacts and nature—it was only a matter of time until Kahlo would receive both the Broadway treatment and her very own immersive experience. Here’s to hoping both projects will do her justice.

”Frida Kahlo, The Life of an Icon”  will open  at 261 Water Street on October 27. Tickets for the much-anticipated event will go on sale right here this upcoming Friday at 10am EST.

A Fresh Look at Frida Kahlo

frida kahlo nyc the immersive biography

MEXICO CITY — Tote bags, city walls, carnival costumes, dolls. We see her everywhere, the black hair tightly pulled back, flowers framing the face, the eyebrows with a light bridge of hair between them, the firm look, the red lips with a delicate mustache on top.

But as widely recognizable as Frida Kahlo’s face is, I wonder how much younger generations really know her —how she felt about art, politics, love, or how her legacy might resonate in contemporary Mexico. A recent documentary renders a vivid and welcome reintroduction to her inner world.

Yes, there have been biopics, documentaries, a 500-page biography. But it had been a while since her life had been given a big platform, pop treatment—the well-known Salma Hayek film came out in 2002. Frida , by the Peruvian director Carla Gutiérrez, is a production of Amazon Studios, and widely accessible in terms of distribution and aesthetics.

The documentary’s ace in the hole is that the birth-to-grave narrative is told by the painter herself. It’s an ingenious way to carve out a person from a pile of merch. There are no known recordings of Kahlo’s voice, but actress Fernanda Echevarría del Rivero conjures up her words from diary entries and letters.

And what words she had! Funny, critical, biting, vulnerable. A great writer as well as a painter.

We make our way through her cheeky, gender-bender childhood; the accident that caused the injuries with which she dealt her entire life; her life-long love affair with socialism and Mexicanness, a combination enlivened by the Mexican Revolution; her trajectory in art and politics, in Mexico and in the U.S.; her relationships, the main one being with muralist Diego Rivera. While we listen to her, we see a lot of photos (her father was a photographer so there are many great domestic visuals) interlaced with animations of her paintings. At times the pattern feels repetitive, but it’s worth sticking with.

She emerges as a woman who saw power structures with suspicion and irreverence and had an aversion to orthodoxies.

La gran caca —“the big shit”—is an expression she used often. “Everyone here thinks Diego is la gran caca ,” she says of the U.S., where the couple spent a few years in the 1930s when Rivera was commissioned to paint murals in Detroit and New York. “It irritates me that the most important thing in Gringolandia is to have ambition, to become ‘someone,’ and frankly I don’t have the slightest ambition to be someone, I despise their pride, and being la gran caca doesn’t interest me at all.” About the French surrealists, such as André Breton, who admired her paintings, she said, “They sit in the cafe for hours warming their precious asses. They talk endlessly about ‘culture,’ ‘art’ and ‘revolution.’ They poison the air with theories that will never come true. It’s a decadent manifestation of bourgeois art.”

But judging from the Kahlo we see in the film, it seems she would likely have had fun seeing herself as the pop figure she now is. She turned out to be la gran caca .

At a moment when Mexico has elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and headlines justly reflect the significance of that, it also seems appropriate that one of the country’s most iconic figures gets another, more intimate treatment.

Frida Kahlo is more than a legend at Dallas Museum of Art's exhibition

The exhibition is on view through nov. 17, by kimberly richard • published august 24, 2024 • updated on august 24, 2024 at 10:30 am.

Since her death in 1954, Frida Kahlo has become a cultural icon. Frida: Beyond the Myth , on view at the Dallas Museum of Art through November 17, explores her life and her humanity through her own works as well as the art created by the people who knew her best.

Organized by the Dallas Museum of Art, the exhibition is co-curated by Dr. Agustin Arteaga, the museum’s Eugene McDermott Director, and Sue Canterbury, the museum’s Pauline Gill Sullivan Curator of American Art.

“Sue and I worked together, trying to create a narrative that will walk through from her very, very early days as a young girl, four years old, and having pictures from the most important photographers of the 20 th century that depict her at very private, intimate moments and also her works and create that way to learn about her life as she was thinking and reflecting on the things that happened to her,” Arteaga said.

The exhibition is comprised of 60 works by Kahlo and her contemporaries, chronicling the events that shaped her life and art. Beginning with her early years, the exhibition showcases the influence of her father, a photographer. Her first self-portrait, a gift for her boyfriend Alejandro Gómez Arias, mimics the European Mannerist painters of the 16 th century.

“We see a Frida that we can recognize for her beautiful face, her beautiful features, but she is looking at the Old Masters at this moment in time,” Arteaga said.

This first self-portrait was painted after a devasting bus accident in 1925 that left her with life-altering injuries. Next to this self-portrait is her drawing of the accident as well as her portrait of Arias.

In 1928, Kahlo asked Diego Rivera to assess her paintings. A year later, Kahlo and Rivera were married. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to the United States where Rivera had several commissions. The couple spent time in San Francisco, Detroit and New York. Kahlo’s Tehuana dress attracted the attention of children in Detroit, and she adopted 1910 as her birth year because it coincided with the beginning of the Mexican Revolution.

New exhibition at Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum highlights ‘Hidden History'

“Here we’re going to see how Frida starts transforming herself and we’re going to see very important drawings that start telling us what she is looking at,” Arteaga said.

Following the destruction of Rivera’s controversial Rockefeller Center mural, Kahlo created My Dress Hangs There as a commentary on American’s economic and social hypocrisies.

“She is commenting on everything that is happening in New York,” Arteaga said. “You will see at the bottom; you have all her concerns about the social unrest that is happening because the big crash of the stock exchange.”

“Standing in for her is her Tehuana dress. My dress may be here, but my heart and mind is in Mexico,” Canterbury said.

Kahlo became pregnant several times, but Rivera did not want children. One painting reflects Kahlo’s grief after one of her abortions with her artist palette shaped like a heart.

“It’s almost like ‘These will be my children; my work will be my children.’ This was very disturbing for her,” Canterbury said. “She was particularly sad to lose this particular child.”

To recover from one of the abortions, Kahlo traveled from Detroit to Mexico. Lucienne Bloch, an apprentice of Rivera, took a wistful photo of Kahlo staring out of the train window.

Her relationship with Rivera was complicated, with both pursuing affairs.

“She was okay with him having affairs, but not with her sister,” Arteaga said. “Things didn’t end up well and they divorced for a year and remarried.”

Kahlo Muray portrait

Nickolas Muray, a Hungarian-born commercial photographer, created some of the most striking portraits of Kahlo. Muray and Kahlo met in 1931 and had an affair for a decade. Muray hoped to marry Kahlo, but he eventually realized Kahlo and Rivera would always be connected. His portraits reflect the love and respect between the artists.

“You will see some of his beautiful portraits of her and many of them are the iconic images of Frida Kahlo with ribbons and flowers in her hair,” Arteaga said.

The museum set up a selfie station with a similar white bench and floral background as one of Muray’s portraits.

Even as she enjoyed success, Kahlo’s health deteriorated. In Self-Portrait with Monkey , she includes one of her favorite pets, a monkey. She wears a determined expression on her face and a ribbon in her hair. However, her hair is loose, denoting a physical unraveling. It is a compelling portrait of pain.

“You can see how beautiful this is. You can see a Frida that is completely embellished and secure in herself and you see a little monkey that is also wearing a ribbon of the same color as hers and is looking at us in a frightened way,” Arteaga said.

Kahlo creates still life works as her health declines.

“Some of these works you see here, particularly her still lifes, were created while she was in bed,” Canterbury said. “She let aspects of the things stand in for her or for things that were happening in her life.”

Photographs by Florence Arquin and Lola Álvarez Bravo show the plaster corset she wore, and her leg amputated. Self-Portrait with Loose Hair , painted a year after an unsuccessful spinal surgery, marks the beginning of the end of her life.

“We don’t see that Frida that is beautified, all made-up. You see her hair loose, you see her with that expression that is sad or tired,” Arteaga said. “You see some of that resilience and hope is starting to drain out of her body.”

The exhibition concludes with Naturaleza Viva and a photograph of Kahlo completing the painting from her bed near the end of her life. This final painting features a sun and a moon representing a beginning and end as well as a white dove, perched and seemingly ready to take off into eternity.
