Therefore, a true Muslim speaks the truth and does right. He believes that he will be held answerable for his deeds in the next world. A true Muslim says his prayers five times a day. He tries to share the sorrows and sufferings of his relatives, friends and neighbors.

The life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is a model for him. Islam is a practical and universal religion. Like all ages, its rules and conducts can be practiced in the present also. He believes that Islam is a perfect religion. It offers a solution to all his problems. Islam lays stress on the just distribution of wealth in society.

A system of Zakat has been set up by Islam. It reduces poverty. A true Muslim pays Zakat to the poor once a year A true Muslim believes that the Holy Quran is the last message of Allah. There can be no change in it up to the day of judgment. It was revealed by Allah to Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). It is full of knowledge and wisdom.

It shows the path of peace and salvation. A true Muslim recites it daily with care and love. Hajj is a duty binding on every Muslim who has enough money to perform it.

A true Muslim surrenders himself to Allah and promises to obey Him whole-heartedly. He is always ready to shed his blood for the sake of Islam. He respects the faith of other people. He is clean in his thoughts and words. He always prays to Allah to show him the right path.

Who is A Muslim?

He, who believes in Islam as his religion is called a Muslim. He is one who has a firm belief in ALLAH and his Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). He believes in Angles, on the day of resurrection and the Holy Quran. All the followers of Islam are called Muslims. Being a Muslim is a great blessing of Allah but there is little difference between a Muslim and a true Muslim.

Who is A True Muslim

He who believes in the five pillars of Islam is a Muslim. But a true Muslim is one who follows the teachings of Islam in a true sense. He surrenders himself completely in obedience to Allah. He lives life according to the Sunnah of the Rasool (PBUH) and the commandment s of the Holy Qur’an.

He knows that the joys and sorrows of this world are temporary He never does things that Islam forbids. He spends his life according to the teachings of the Quran. He knows if he does anything wrong. He will be held answerable.

Characteristics of a True Muslim

A true muslim has a firm belief in allah and his last prophet (pbuh).

A true Muslim firmly believes in Allah and Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). It is his belief that Allah has created everything in this universe. Allah is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. He created the whole world. Nothing is possible without his permission.

He knows that Allah is watching over his deeds. He always bows his head to Allah. It is his faith that Allah is the creator of everything. That is why he does good deeds and avoids evils . He follows the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

A True Muslim is Clean and Pure:

A true Muslim never defiles himself. He is a clean and pure human being. If he considers himself unclean, the first thing to do is to clean himself.

The cleanliness is half the faith. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH)

The Rasool of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized a lot on cleanliness, A person cannot be faithful if he does not pay attention to personal cleanliness. A true Muslim knows that he cannot worship until he has cleansed himself. But there are some exemptions under certain circumstances .

A True Muslim Leads a Simple Life:

A true Muslim leads a simple life. The “simple way of life” is the hallmark of Islam and the essential component of the believer of Islam. Human nature has abominable attributes like malice and envy. That is why mutual enmity and hatred arise. In such a situation, a person keeps an eye on others’ property and wants to get all this either.

But a good Muslim never desires such things. He earns his livelihood by honest means. He believes that God will never starve him. He does not beg for things. He does not bow down his self-respect. The followers of Islam live like a family. They give zakat to poor people so they can live a good life.

A True Muslim Never Harms Others:

A Muslim does not harm anyone. He takes care of his family, relatives and neighbors.

All the social teachings of the Quran revolve around this basic principle that every Muslim be careful in his every word and deed. His movements did not cause any physical, mental, emotional, or financial harm to anyone.

But this does not mean that it is permissible to cause harm by any means other than the hand and the tongue. Obviously, the real purpose is to prevent all kinds of harm. But since most of the suffering comes from the hands and the tongue, they are specifically mentioned.

Do good to others, definitely, Allah loves those who do good to others.

He Does not Take Revenge upon Anyone:

A true Muslim never takes revenge. He always takes the initiative to forgive others. He does not kill people as he knows it is forbidden in Islam. He always loves everyone.

A true Muslim is one with whom people are satisfied in their blood and wealth Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH)

He Never Indulges in Ambiguities:

It is undoubtedly wrong for a Muslim to suffer from evils and sins. But to accuse someone of sins and evils is far worse. One of the evils that are spreading like a plague in our society is slander and false accusation . False accusations such as theft, bribery , immorality , betrayal , and murder have ruined the peace of our domestic, business, and office life.

But a good Muslim never indulges in ambiguities . He does not comment before a complete search or knowledge. He always thinks before talking. He always speaks with authenticity. He knows that his one wrong word can harm the whole life of a person. He himself always speaks the truth.

Those who harm Muslim men and women by accusing them of no crime. Surely they bear the burden of great slander and open sin. Al- Quran سورہ احزاب:58

The Holy Prophet (S. A. W) describes a true Muslim in these words;

” A true Muslim is one who does not defame or abuse others; but he becomes a refuge for mankind, their lives and their properties”

To be a good Muslim is true, a great blessing of Allah. The follower of Islam is called Muslim. A true Muslim has a belief in Allah and his last prophet Muhammad ( peace be upon him). He believes that Allah is the light of heaven and earth. It is his faith that Allah is the Creator of everything in the World and is the lord of the Day of judgment. He believes that Allah is aware of his doings and actions. He morally bad or wrong behaviour avoid because he knows that he will be held answerable for his deeds.Those who trust Allah never lose hope and does not do anything wrong. It is his belief that Allah is alone. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (S. A. W) describes the true Muslim in his sermon as;

” Blessed is he who earns his living through lawful ways and he whose inward status is good, outward is decent; spends his surplus wealth in charity; abstains from excessive talking; people remain safe of ( any ) evil from him; he treats others with justice. Surely whoever believes in Allah fears Him, and whoever fears Allah guards himself against the evil of this world.”

A true Muslim leads a simple and wants to live a pure life. He wears simple clothes. He strictly follows the commandments of Allah as mentioned in the Holy Quran;

”Purify your garments and shun uncleanness.”

He earns his livelihood through honest means and is contented with it. He controls his desires. He does not beg for worldly things. He does not bring down his self-respect. He invests his life according to the teachings of Islam. He devotes his life to help others in time of need and adversity. The Holy Quran highlights it as;

” Do good to others, definitely, Allah loves those who do good to others.”

He always bows his head before in all the matters of his life. He condemns evil ways of aggression.

” Help one another in good and righteous works, and do not help one another in sin and hostility.”

He recites the Holy Quran and feels great joy. He gives alms to the poor. He is good at heart. He is not afraid of anything except Allah and does not what is right. He offers prayers regularly, keeps fast, gives Zakat and performs Hajj. He believes in the Day of judgment and the life hereafter. A true Muslim has regard for his neighbour and relatives. He never does anything that goes against their matters. He respects their rights. He shares their joys and sorrows. He is interested in their welfare and happiness. He does his best to help them whenever he can. He is always prepared to sacrifice his own interests for the sake of his neighbour and relatives. The Holy Quran mentions it as;

”Give to the near relative his due, and also to the needy and to the traveller.

He is well-behaved. He is graceful in everything that he does. He tries to be sweet to others. He has a smile on his face while dealing with others. Holy Propet Muhammad (S. A. W) says;

”It is an act of charity to meet your fellow with a cheerful face.”

A true Muslim seeks knowledge and acts upon it. He leads a life of diligence, discipline and deep study. knowledge is obligatory in Islam. A true Muslim learns from the lap of his mother to his grave. He is always broadminded. He ponders over the secrets of nature. He studies diligently to understand the true spirit of Islam. Allama Iqbal expressed this in these words;

” I have given the best part of my life to careful study of Islam, its law and policy, its culture, its history and its literature”. (Muhammad Iqbal)

He educates his children well and develops them into good citizens. He tries to create a healthy atmosphere in his family. he solves his problems in a very intelligent manner. He is clean and pure in thought and deeds. There is no difference between his action and preaching. He is fearless and courageous. The life of a Muslim reflects the true spirit of Islam. A true Muslim is neither a miser nor a spendthrift. He maintains the balance between these two extremes. He is thankful to Allah in prosperity. He shows patience in adversity. He knows that the joys and sorrows of this world are temporary. He knows that the purpose of his life is to please Allah. A true Muslim takes great care of the rights of his fellow beings. He does not deceive others. He always speaks gently and politely. He is sincere, true and kind at heart. He wins to the hearts of others by his good dealings. He always fulfils his promise. He is an optimist by nature and never worries himself over trifles.

He often prays to His lord,

”Oh Allah, bless us in this worldly life as well as save us from the hellfire in the hereafter (Ameen)

He is a man of rare qualities of head and heart. He is a symbol of integrity and honesty. Even his worst enemies admit that he is a man of principles. He is reliable, loveable and sociable. He guides and direct his fellow beings to do the right. Consideration for others is the main aim of his life. In short, he provides himself to be what a true Muslim should be. Another quality of such a person is that he is humble, free from any sort of pride and arrogance. The Holy Prophet (S. A. W) says;

” The best amongst you is the one whose manners are the best”

He walks humbly, talks humbly, and behaves humbly hence humbleness is a part of his life. In short, a true Muslimpossesses all the positive and constructive qualities. He is beneficial and useful to his family, society and humanity. The Holy Quran highlights true Muslims in these words;

”You are the best of people evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong” ‘

The Definition of a True Muslim

With many Muslim scholars declaring other Muslims as non-Muslims in this day and age, it can be difficult to ascertain as to who is a true Muslim. Firstly, we should turn to the Holy Qur’an and see the Words of Allah. Allah the Almighty states about the Arab bedouins:

قَالَتِ الْأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا قُلْ لَمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَٰكِنْ قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْإِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ وَإِنْ تُطِيعُوا اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَا يَلِتْكُمْ مِنْ أَعْمَالِكُمْ شَيْئًا إِنَّ اللَه غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِاللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَرْتَابُوا وَجَاهَدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنْفُسِهِمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الصَّادِقُونَ

The Arabs of the desert say, ‘We believe.’ Say, “You have not believed yet; but rather say, ‘We have accepted Islam,’ for the true belief has not yet entered into your hearts.” But if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not detract anything from your deeds Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful. The believers are only those who truly believe in Allah and His Messenger, and then doubt not, but strive with their possessions and their persons in the cause of Allah. It is they who are truthful. [i]

The Arabs of the desert would say they believe but, they were not yet true believers. For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad (sa) was told to say that you are Muslims but faith has not yet entered into your hearts. This shows that anyone who believes in Islam, is entitled to call themselves Muslims. The Qur’an does not allow anyone to declare another person a disbeliever if he recites the kalima (declaration of faith).

Then the question arises – what was the definition given by the Prophet Muhammad (sa)? When we turn to the ahadith (narrations of the Holy Prophet (sa)), we see that there are three main definitions of a Muslim.

The Prophet Muhammad (sa) stated:

اكْتُبُوا لِي مَنْ تَلَفَّظَ بِالإِسْلاَمِ مِنَ النَّاسِ

‘List the names of those people who have announced that they are Muslims’ [ii]

This was said by the Prophet Muhammad (sa) when the population of Muslims was needed for a census in Madinah. At that time this was the only criteria. Anyone who declared that they were Muslims, were counted as Muslims in the eyes of the founder of Islam.

The second definition mentioned some of the practices of Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad (sa) stated:

مَنْ صَلَّى صَلاَتَنَا، وَاسْتَقْبَلَ قِبْلَتَنَا، وَأَكَلَ ذَبِيحَتَنَا، فَذَلِكَ الْمُسْلِمُ الَّذِي لَهُ ذِمَّةُ اللَّهِ وَذِمَّةُ رَسُولِهِ، فَلاَ تُخْفِرُوا اللهَ فِي ذِمَّتِهِ

‘Whoever prays like us and faces our Qibla and eats our slaughtered animals is a Muslim and is under Allah’s and His Apostle’s protection. So do not betray Allah by betraying those who are in His protection.’ [iii]

In this hadith , the Prophet Muhammad (sa) has given a warning to the Muslims. He knew that in the future some extremist Muslims would persecute other Muslims over their differences. He warned such extremists that by persecuting such innocent Muslims, they would be betraying Allah.

In the third hadith , the Prophet Muhammad (sa) stated:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي ظِبْيَانَ، عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، وَهَذَا، حَدِيثُ ابْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَ بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي سَرِيَّةٍ فَصَبَّحْنَا الْحُرَقَاتِ مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ فَأَدْرَكْتُ رَجُلاً فَقَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ ‏.‏ فَطَعَنْتُهُ فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏”‏ أَقَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ وَقَتَلْتَهُ “‏‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّمَا قَالَهَا خَوْفًا مِنَ السِّلاَحِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ أَفَلاَ شَقَقْتَ عَنْ قَلْبِهِ حَتَّى تَعْلَمَ أَقَالَهَا أَمْ لاَ ‏“‏ ‏.‏ فَمَازَالَ يُكَرِّرُهَا عَلَىَّ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْلَمْتُ يَوْمَئِذٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ وَأَنَا وَاللهِ لاَ أَقْتُلُ مُسْلِمًا حَتَّى يَقْتُلَهُ ذُو الْبُطَيْنِ ‏.‏ يَعْنِي أُسَامَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ أَلَمْ يَقُلِ اللهُ ‏ } ‏وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّى لاَ تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ كُلُّهُ لِلهِ‏{‏ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ قَدْ قَاتَلْنَا حَتَّى لاَ تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَأَنْتَ وَأَصْحَابُكَ تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تُقَاتِلُوا حَتَّى تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ

It is narrated on the authority of Usama b. Zaid that ‘the Messenger of Allah (sa) sent us on an expedition. We raided Huraqat of Juhaina in the morning. I caught hold of a man and he said:“There is no god but Allah”, I attacked him with a spear. It once occurred to me and I talked about it to the Apostle (sa). The Messenger of Allah (sa) said: ‘Did he profess “There is no god but Allah,” and even then you killed him?’ I said: ‘Messenger of Allah, he made a profession of it out of the fear of the weapon.’ He observed: ‘Did you tear his heart in order to find out whether it had professed or not?’ And he went on repeating it to me till I wished I had embraced Islam that day. Sa’d said: ‘By Allah, I would never kill any Muslim so long as a person with a heavy belly, i.e., Usama, would not kill.’ Upon this a person remarked: ‘Did Allah not say: And fight them until there is no more mischief and religion is wholly for Allah?’ Sa’d said: ‘We fought so that there should be no mischief, but you and your companions wish to fight so that there should be mischief.’ [iv]

The definitions given today by some Muslims are completely opposite to the words of the Prophet Muhammad (sa). Ahmadi Muslims believe all those who recite the kalima to be Muslims. Anything else spread in the media is either out of context or propaganda.

The Fifth Caliph and current worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (aba) stated:

‘The Ahmadiyya Community, according to the instructions of Allah and His Messenger (sa) believes everyone who recites the kalima is a Muslim. For someone to be a Muslim, it is enough for him to simply declare:

لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّااللهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ الله ‎

And this is exactly what is proven from the ahadith’ [v]

Speaking about the fact that some non-Ahmadi clerics have deemed Ahmadi Muslims to be non-Muslim, His Holiness (aba) said:

‘The Holy Prophet (sa) taught that no one has the right to call any person who utters the kalima to be a non-Muslim. The truth is that no human being or power has the right to deny what is in the heart of another person.’ [vi]

Despite having been labelled by most of the Muslim world as non-Muslims, Ahmadi Muslims do not seek out the approval or attestation of others; rather Ahmadi Muslims are content so long as they fulfill the criteria establish by God and His Messenger (sa), as His Holiness (aba) states:

‘As far as the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is concerned, neither have we ever asked a foreign power to grant us the status of ‘Muslims’ before the law and the constitution, nor have we ever begged any Pakistani government for this. We do not require a certificate from any assembly or government in order to be called Muslims. We call ourselves Muslims. We call ourselves Muslims because we are Muslims. Allah the Exalted and His Messenger (sa) have declared us to be Muslims. We pronounce the kalima [declaration of faith]: [ there is none worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad (sa) is His messenger ]. We believe in every pillar of Islam and article of faith. We have faith in the Holy Qur’an and believe the Holy Prophet (sa) to be Khatam-un-Nabiyeen [Seal of the Prophets] as Allah the Exalted has stated in the Holy Qur’an and as I have just recited. We have firm conviction that the Holy Prophet (sa) is Khatam-un-Nabiyeen .’ [vii]

12 Principles That Make a True Muslim

Muslims believe that Surat Al-Israa’ was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Makkah after his Night Journey from Makkah to Jerusalem.

In this surah, Allah mentions some basic commitments of a true Muslim. Without fulfilling these commitments, no individual or group can succeed.

Muslims have to live by these values and should invite humanity to these principles.

These principles are not limited to one race, tribe, or group; they are universal in their scope and application. These are also called the hikmah or the teachings of wisdom.

If followed properly, they are capable of increasing the goodness and wisdom of all people. These principles are as follows:

1 – To Worship Allah Alone

Thy Lord hath decreed, that ye worship none save Him. ( 17:23 )

That is How Allah Wants Us to Care

This means to recognize Allah as the ultimate reality and to recognize Allah as the Lord, to worship Him with all sincerity and to submit to Him in every aspect of life. A Muslim’s life is nothing but total commitment to Allah.

We are not only monotheists but we are also theocentric people. Allah is the center of our life and He is our total and ultimate concern.

2- To Be Respectful and Kind to Parents

And (that ye show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not “Fie” unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word. And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: My Lord! Have mercy on them both as they did care for me when I was little. ( 23-24 )

This is to acknowledge the compassion and kindness of parents , to be grateful to them, and to do one’s utmost to reciprocate that love and compassion.

Filial piety and devotion is the second most important commitment of Muslims. Respect and kindness to parents is not just a social duty for us; it is our religious duty and obligation.

3 – To Be Good to Relatives, to the Poor, and to Travelers

Give the kinsman his due, and the needy, and the wayfarer. ( 26 )

This is to remember that we are interconnected in this world. Our responsibilities are not only towards ourselves and our immediate families, but also to other relatives and to the society at large.

We are all in need of each other and we are all fellow travelers in this path of life. We must see what we can do for others.

Muslims must live a socially responsible life. Social responsibility begins with the family and other relatives and it includes all those who are in need.

4 – To Be Careful with Money and Not Waste Resources

And squander not (thy wealth) in wantonness. Lo! the squanderers were ever brothers of the devils, and the devil was ever an ingrate to his Lord … And let not thy hand be chained (like a niggard’s) to thy neck nor open it with a complete opening, lest thou become blameworthy and destitute. Lo! thy Lord enlargeth the provision for whom He will, and straiteneth (it for whom He will). Lo, He was ever Knower, Seer of His slaves. ( 17:26-7 , 29-30 )

9 Truths to Live by and Find Happiness

One should be neither too tight with one’s money nor too loose with it.

Extravagance is not right, but also one should not become stingy and miserly. A true Muslim is committed to the balanced life style. Money should be earned in halal (lawful) ways and it should be spent in the right manner.

This principle can be applied to all resources that Allah has given us. Wise and conscientious use of resources is a very important commitment of Muslims.

5 – To Take Good Care of Children

Slay not your children, fearing a fall to poverty, We shall provide for them and for you. Lo! the slaying of them is great sin. ( 17:31 )

As we recognize the rights of the parents, we should also recognize the rights of children . Our children are our future. We must see that we raise healthy, intelligent and morally responsible children.

Our commitment should be to raise them in safe and healthy environment. We must protect their life as well as their spirit and mind, their morals and manners.

6 – To Steer Clear of Adultery and Illicit Relations

And come not near unto fornication. Lo! it is an abomination and an evil way. ( 17:32 )

Sexual perversions bring the greatest harm to individuals and societies. Observing the proper rules in this matter lead to health, happiness, and a good, moral society. Muslims are committed to pure, clean, and socially responsible lifestyle.

Islam teaches that one should not come even close to adultery or fornication. This means proper dress codes for males and females, proper behavior in mixed societies, and proper control on social relations and entertainment.

7 – To Respect Every Life and Not to Kill Anyone Unless in the Pursuit of Justice

And slay not the life which Allah hath forbidden except for a just cause. ( 17:33 )

The Path to the Light: Increase Your Faith

This means that one should recognize the sanctity of all life and should not do anything that may jeopardize life. One should avoid aggression and violence, because these things lead to murder. Every Muslim must be committed to peaceful ways.

Conflicts should be resolved by dialogue and negotiations, not by killings and murders. However, justice must be maintained, because just punishment brings safety and protects life.

8 – To Take Care of the Orphans

Come not nigh to the orphan’s property except to improve it, until he attains the age of full strength. ( 17:34 )

Orphans and all those who are vulnerable must be taken care of. We must recognize their rights and protect them from all harm. A Muslim must be deeply committed to the care of the young, poor, infirm, and handicapped.

Kindness and compassion is the basic commitment of a Muslim. It includes everyone and includes the animals.

9 – To Fulfill Promises and Commitments

And keep the covenant. Lo! of the covenant it will be asked. ( 17:34 )

Promises and contracts are an important part of human life and human civilization. When promises are not kept, people lose trust in each other and the whole society becomes weak. Muslims must be true to their words.

Our commitment must be to speak the truth and to be honest and when we make a pledge we must do our best to fulfill our pledges.

10 – To Be Honest in Business Dealings

Give full measure when ye measure, and weigh with a balance that is straight: that is the most fitting and the most advantageous in the end. ( 17:35 )

Honest business brings progress, success, and blessings. All business, whether commercial, social, or political must be done with a sense of justice and fairness.

A true Muslim is committed to fair dealing in every thing and with every one. Dealing with a Muslim means dealing with full confidence. A Muslim businessman should be the most truthful businessman. A Muslim worker should be the most honest worker. So a Muslim in any profession should bring honor to that profession.

11 – To Act upon Knowledge and Not Follow hearsay or act on half-truths

follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge. Lo! the hearing and the sight and the heart—of each of these it will be asked. ( 17:36 )

Information agencies, the media, have a great responsibility. A lot of injustice is done when misinformation is given or information is misused.

Muslims should be truthful in information. They should promote truthful and honest reporting about everyone, including their enemies. A report coming from a Muslim source should be the most trustworthy report.

In a similar way, Muslims should be extremely careful with their actions and reactions. They should not react against everyone without proper evidence.

12 – To Be Humble and Have No Arrogance

And walk not on the earth exultant. Lo! thou canst not rend the earth, nor canst thou stretch to the height of the mountains. ( 17:37 )

Moderation and balance is the best thing in the behavior as well as in attitude toward others. A true Muslim is a dignified person, but he or she is humble. And a Muslim is not boastful, arrogant, or vainglorious.

A true Muslim thanks Allah for all His gifts. For everything, the ultimate praise is for Allah and the real glory belongs to Allah.

These are the basic commitments of Muslims as individuals and as people.

These are the principles of wisdom and the universal values of Islam. Following them brings justice, peace, and happiness in this world and they will indeed bring success and salvation in the Hereafter.

Let us all try to make these our real commitments.

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

المسلم من سلم الناس من لسانه ويده والمؤمن من أمنه الناس على دمائهم وأموالهم

This Hadith has been recorded in various Hadith collections with variations in the wording. Imam Tirmidhi, Imam Nasai, Imam Ahmad (rahimahumullah) and others have recorded the version in question on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). Imam Tirmidhi has declared the Hadith authentic.

Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have also recorded the first part of this Hadith.

Introductory Essay

Before taking this course, my knowledge of Islam had primarily been informed by the mainstream media. Unfortunately for the probable thousands of Americans who shared this in common with me, there are so many misconceived notions of Islam depicted by these media outlets that may never be rectified unless an active search for truth is realized. Much of what the younger generations have seen in their lifetimes regarding Islam has been shrouded by dialogues of terrorism, war, and fear. It is a very instinctually human phenomenon to form an opinion and stick to it for pride or vanity’s sake. These opinions once formed are rarely able to be transformed, unless genuine open-mindedness and empathy are present. But fortunately for me, I came into Harvard almost entirely set on concentrating in the Comparative Study of Religion. Coming from a tremendously devout Catholic family, I had attended parochial school my whole life. Though I fell in love with my Catholic faith from a young age, I knew that reserving my religious studies to Catholic theology alone was detrimental not only to my conception of Catholicism, but to my conception of religion as a whole. Taking a class on Islam was a top priority on my list as I was aware of my own ignorance of both the religion and the culture. But people are not stringently bound by their ignorance that perpetuates destructive stereotypes. Misconceptions and misunderstandings can be easily cured with knowledge. And that is something I learned this semester.

In his book Infidel of Love, Professor Asani says: “It is one of the great ironies of our times that peoples from different religious, cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds are in closer contact with each other than ever before, yet this closeness has not resulted in better understanding and appreciation for difference. Rather, our world is marked with greater misunderstandings and misconceptions, resulting in ever-escalating levels of tensions between cultures and nations.” (page 1) These tensions that arise between cultures hardly exist on account of reasons other than ignorance. Nobody could ever come to truly know or appreciate another person, community, or culture without truly understanding that person, community, or culture. Learning about Islam therefore becomes an undertaking that requires the study of the historic, social, and political contexts that envelop the religion, before diving into the study of the modern-day conflicts existing within and surrounding some Muslim nations. Throughout this class, not only did we look at these political and historical contexts, but we also, more uniquely, examined Islam through the lenses of art, literature, poetry, and music. Peering into our subject through these aesthetic lenses provided an experience unlike any other approach to learning I’ve yet encountered. I hope the viewer will catch a glimpse of this from my blog posts.

In this blog, I present my own personal interpretations of and responses to Islamic art, literature, poetry, architecture, music, and culture. Each entry presents a reflection of the corresponding lecture material or weekly readings beginning with Week Two’s “Constructions of Islam” and ending with Week Twelve’s reading of Persepolis and Sultana’s Dream. As I mention in some of my blog posts, my spiritual life was fairly established before taking this class; but with each coming week and its accompanying lectures, my eyes were opened to so many new possibilities of approaching faith and life as a whole. Though I came to this class with a limited knowledge of Islam and, moreover, a mistaken belief that the religion along with all it promoted had no place alongside my own convictions, I am now ending the semester, delighted to have been proven wrong. My deepest hope is that someone stumbling upon this assortment of “mystical meditations and other miscellaneous musings” might recognize the collective revelations that have allowed me modest glimpses into enlightenment over these past 13 weeks, and even better, might also be inspired to think differently themselves.

In my first blog post, “Constructions of Islam,” I focus on the distinction between the terms “Muslim” and “muslim.” This was perhaps one of my favorite units in the semester because it set the stage so perfectly for all of the other misconceptions I was subconsciously harboring that would be broken throughout the rest of the course. I think that the aforementioned villainization of Muslims that has been presented in the media post 9/11 has created a false notion that at the core of Islam, exists a claim to salvation that precludes any non-Muslim from God’s mercy. But, something I learned in week two, primarily through Professor Asani’s second chapter of Infidel of Love, is that True Islam values all human life and recognizes the fact that fundamental human rights are not only universal, but that belief in this is a principal tenet of the religion. Contrary to the misconception, True Islam emphasizes that inherent dignity of humanity is derived from the same creator and therefore, rejects any possibility of ethnic, racial, or religious supremacy. As a recently declared concentrator in the study of comparative religion, I find this pluralistic message all the more critical for the development and fostering of understanding. I am a firm believer that we should not be content with the end-goal of tolerance. Tolerance implies a certain degree of complacency towards a subject, when what we should be striving for is appreciation for difference, and an eagerness to learn more about viewpoints countering our own.

My second blog post turns towards a more aesthetic side of Islam. In week six, we discussed mosque architecture and heard from two guest lecturers who spoke about the fluidity and multidimensional nature of Islamic art. In Ismail R. Al-Faruqi’s Misconceptions on the Nature of Islamic Art, he prefaces the text by noting that “the Western scholars of Islamic art…have failed in the supreme effort of understanding the spirit of that art, of discerning and analyzing its Islamicness…they sought to bend Islamic art to its categories.” (page 29) This recurring phenomenon of Western societies misappropriating cultures outside of their own is one of, if not the singular, leading cause of the culture clash that Professor Asani references in the first excerpt from Infidel of Love. Not only are misrepresentations of these cultures counterproductive to the quest for understanding, they are simply erroneous and lazy assessments in which these Western scholars attempt to fit every other culture and society into the confines of their own constructed conventions. What I found so beautiful and unique about Islamic art is that despite the wildly varied modes of interpretation and expression, all “derive their theological aesthetic from the same principle, namely, tawhid, the acknowledgement and assertion of God’s uncompromised unity and transcendence.” (Rendard, Seven Doors to Islam , page 128) The artistic liberty afforded by this principle combined with the lack of a rigid architectural template for masjids leads to endless creative possibilities. I chose to follow up Week Two’s blog with Week Six because I think the plurality message tied into the first blog also comes through in this visual project. The incorporation of three cultures into the Spanish mosque architecture is a prime example of the productive relationship that can exist between nations, and the beauty that arises as a result of their cooperative effort.

The blog inspired by Week Five deals with the importance of historical contexts and the role history plays in shaping a culture. The relationship between the father, the son, and the grandfather in Elie Wiesel’s quote is one that helped me understand the importance of the Ta’ziyeh much more clearly. So much of history relies on story-telling and the passing on of customs, but many people undervalue the importance of preserving tradition. And yet, tradition is what so often lies at the heart of religion and group identity as a whole. Without tradition and a rich history, meaning can be entirely dissolved from a culture. I have seen firsthand the essentiality of this preservation within my own faith. It’s easy to question the Truths within your religion when you realize that you only subscribe to it because of your parents, and their parents, and their parents’ parents. But once you realize the weight of tradition, you grow to appreciate the history behind your own roots, and suddenly, there is so much more meaning underlying your convictions.

Transitioning into the second half of the course, my fourth blog revolves around Week Nine’s subject of Islamic poetry. This type of faith expression and the difficulty discussed in lecture of confining a spiritual experience to fit within the parameters of language is one that I was easily able to relate to. Throughout my life, I have had innumerable encounters with areligious people that lack even the slightest trace of faith. Trying to verbalize your own faith experience is almost an impossible feat, and anyone who has been in a similar place could likely attest. When the Transcendent is so infinitely above the worldly realm that we exist in, it would be a futile task to limit an encounter with It to time or space. This poem grapples with my inner battle between constantly seeking social validation and ultimately realizing that “the one who made the stars, for my heart freely yearns.” This sense of security of self that I find within my own faith is something that people in my life who have never experienced this may never understand. My sense of self is secure because it rests in the opinion of my creator, and I have realized more and more throughout this course that I do not stand alone in this conviction. I am convinced that the bond which exists between people of faith is unlike any other interpersonal connection that human beings could share. Not only does it transcend language and time, it automatically places you on an elevated state of understanding.

This sense of unity among the community of believers is exactly why I chose to shift into Week Ten’s Conference of the Birds. In choosing seven birds and seven languages denoting “God,” I hoped to encompass this theme that, despite possessing impossible differences, no single religion holds a monopoly over salvation. Like the Buddhist parable of the blind men and the elephant, I believe all religions strive towards the same understanding of the Divine and arrive at different interpretations. These differences, far from excluding any one faith from attaining the “other-worldly,” unite believers on a common journey of enlightenment. The lessons from this search for truth illustrated in The Conference of the Birds was one of my biggest takeaways from this course. I think people do themselves such a disservice in believing that their way contains the only Gospel Truth. There are so many different routes linking this world to the next. If a believer genuinely perceives the Divine as infinite, how would this not be the case?

This multiplicity of paths to the Divine is what inspired Week Twelve’s imitation of Persepolis. Though dealing more with my own spiritual journey, the comic strip template allowed me to depict the variety of examples necessary to highlight this theme. In high school, my sophomore year theology teacher taught us about Divine Revelation and the different ways in which God unveils Himself to humanity. There are so many areas of my life in which I see proof of this divinity so plainly. I’ve spoken with non-believers who are frustrated by the fact that if God exists, why shouldn’t He come down or show Himself to us? I find it so hard to stop myself in those moments and scream, “He’s right there! He’s in you, He’s in me! He’s in everything! Don’t you see it?” But evidently, the answer is ‘no.’ If I truly believe in an infinite, omnipotent God, shouldn’t it make sense from this conception that a direct revelation would be too much for my finite mind to comprehend? This thought helps me to search for the beauty and good in everything around me and recognize it as having its roots in the Divine. Whether that be reflected through love, through kindness, through nature, or even through suffering, all of these help me to appreciate my faith and broaden my own conception of my creator on a much grander scale. This past semester has only reinforced this belief. I was challenged, enlightened, wounded, healed, distressed, and relieved all at once and I could not be more thankful for this period of tremendous growth. It is my sincere wish that readers of this blog might experience the joy and hope offered by faith at some point in their lives, or if they already have, to hold onto it for as long as they live. Life is hard and suffering does not discriminate, but with faith, our burden is made much lighter.

Five qualities of a true believer of Islam (a Muslim)

T he Quran mentions many qualities of a Muslim throughout the various chapters (surahs) of the Quran. In one such instance, the following verses of Surah Al-Anfal highlight five noteworthy qualities.

2. The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (this Quran) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (Alone); 3. Who perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and spend out of that We have provided them. 4. It is they who are the believers in truth. For them are grades of dignity with their Lord, and Forgiveness and a generous provision (Paradise). Quran ( Surah Al-Anfal , verses 2 – 4)

It’s clear from these verses that the qualities of a true Muslim mentioned in these verses are the following:

When Allah is mentioned, they feel the fear of Him in their hearts;
Their faith increases every time they hear and ponder over Quran’s verses;
They put their trust in Allah, i.e. have Tawakkul on Allah;
They (Muslim Believers) perform prayers regularly ;
They spend in charity in the path of Allah.

As a Muslim, one can take heed from these verses and assess the state of his or her heart . In his tafsir, Ibn Kathir notes one of the attributes of the hypocrites is that none of Allah’s remembrance enters their hearts upon performing what He has ordained. They neither believe in any of Allah’s Ayat nor trust (in Allah) nor pray if they are alone nor pay the Zakah due on their wealth.

The primary point is that the one of the signs of a true believer is that when Allah is mentioned, he of she feels His awe and fears Him in his or her heart, and thus implements His orders and abstains from His prohibitions. About such people, Sufyan Ath-Thawri narrated that As-Suddi commented, “A man might be thinking of committing injustice or a sin. But he abstains when he is told, `Have Taqwa of Allah’, and his heart becomes fearful.”

Finally, for such people Allah has promised ‘grades of dignity’ , i.e. special places in paradise. We know from various ahadith that paradise has many levels and the more deserving are granted better and higher grades in paradise. In a Hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad and the collectors of Sunan, Abu Atiyyah said that Ibn Abu Said said that the Messenger of Allah said,

“ Residents of Paradise see the residents of the highest grades just as you see the distant planet in the horizon of the sky. Verily, Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq and `Umar are among them (in the highest grades), and how excellent they are.”

He offers prayers regularly and recites Holy Quran with absolute love and dedication. He believes Quran is the ultimate guideline to solve all matters. He believes in the day of judgement and prepares for it. A true Muslim has regard for his neighbours and relatives. A true Muslim often prays from his Lord:

“Oh Allah, bless us in this worldly life as well save us from the hellfire in the Hereafter.”

He earns his livelihood through fair means and remains contented with it. He doesn’t bring down his self-respect. He devotes his life to help others in time of need and diversity. He gives alms without showing his noble act to others. He is sincere, true and kind at heart. He wins the hearts of others by his good dealings.

The Holy Quran highlights it as:

” Allah loves those who do good to others”.

A true Muslim does not take revenge upon anyone. He never kills or harms his fellow human beings as he knows that Islam does not allow it. Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) said:

“He who kills a person kills the whole human beings.”

A true Muslim is reliable, winsome and faithful. He guides and directs his fellow beings to do the right. He is modest, humble and free from any pride.

“The best amongst you is the one whose manners are the best.”

Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) has emphasized a lot on physical and mental cleanliness. A person cannot be a true Muslim if he doesn’t take care of his hygiene. A true Muslim knows that all his prayers will be accepted only if he is clean.

“The cleanliness is half the faith.”

A true Muslim seeks knowledge and acts upon it. He knows that knowledge is obligatory in Islam. A true Muslim learns from the lap of his mother to his grave. A true Muslim is thankful to Allah for prosperity and shows patience in adversity. He always fulfils his promises. Consideration for others is the main purpose of his life. In short, A true Muslim follows all the commandments of Allah as mentioned in the Holy Quran. He is always there to help his neighbours and friends.

He believes that he is aware of his deeds and actions. He knows that he will be held answerable for his deeds and actions. Therefore, he fears only God. He believes that God is present everywhere. He does not harm the other members of society. A true Muslim does not let his desires rule over him. He always bows his head before God and his Prophet (SAW) in all matters of life. He offers prayers regularly, keeps fast, gives Zakat, and performs Hajj. He believes in the Day of Judgement and the life hereafter. A good Muslim seeks knowledge and acts upon Judgement and the life hereafter. A good Muslim seeks knowledge and acts upon it. He is clean and pure in thoughts and deeds. He does his duty honestly. He does not tell a lie. He does not deceive others. He takes great care of the rights of his fellow beings. He is better than an angel if she is a true Muslim.
