Dublin City University

Dublin City University is a young university, situated on an 85 acre campus three miles north of the River Liffey in the city centre and just a 15-minute drive from Dublin airport. With the city just a 10-minute bus drive away, students of DCU have the best of both worlds; the social and cultural benefits of city life, but with the security and vibrancy of a university campus built very much for today. Dublin City University was initially set up to fulfil the national requirement for a highly-trained workforce with skills in the areas of business, science and electronics, computer technology, communications and languages and as an agent for change in its local community. The first students came through the door in 1980 and the university is now recognised nationally and internationally as a centre of academic excellence. It was awarded university status in 1989 and was considered at the time to be an 'unconventional' university. It broke with the traditional mould and introduced a number of ideas, which had enormous impact on the Irish education system. DCU was the first university in Ireland to introduce work placement (INTRA) as part of its degree programmes. The aim is for students to put their academic skills into practice in the work environment. Its degree programmes were also the first to be interdisciplinary, with, for example science students taking business courses, business students taking languages and language students taking computing. Many DCU students study at universities in Spain, France, Germany and Austria as part of their degree programmes under Erasmus exchange agreements. DCU has developed its own research specialisms, creating a number of national centres of excellence that collaborate with other universities and industry internationally. These research centres have transcended traditional boundaries and have been extended to include combinations of academic disciplines such as biotechnology, electronic engineering, physics and chemistry. The design of the campus and the bright modern architecture make DCU a vibrant and attractive place to study. The campus is laid out to encourage community interaction with the John & Aileen O'Reilly Library at the East end and the restaurant and Helix Arts Centre at the West end. It is a place where young people can live, learn and develop in a dynamic but intimate environment. One of the objectives of the university is the strengthening of the campus as a vibrant social and learning environment and the pursuit of a holistic approach to student development. DCU prides also itself on the range of its facilities, both academic and recreational.

Herilalao Study in Ireland Leave a comment

Ireland has one of the world’s oldest higher education systems and has been a center of learning in Europe since as far as 500 AD. With this many centuries of experience in dispensing education and training, you’ll certainly get access to world-class PhD resources at its universities. Moreover, being part of the European Higher Education Area, Ireland follows the Bologna process, offering PhDs as third-cycle degree-programs. Here’s our overview of how a PhD in Ireland works: structure, requirements, duration, funding and more.

Table of Contents

Benefits of doing a PhD in Ireland

The decision to do a PhD stem from considering several factors: your field of study and research, the university you plan to do your research at, and your goals. Ireland has a number of universities with an excellent reputation, nationally and internationally. Here are some of the benefits you’ll gain if you choose to do your PhD in Ireland.

You don’t necessarily need a master to do a PhD in Ireland

Unlike in many countries, where it’s mandatory for a PhD candidate to hold a master’s degree, in Ireland, you may directly jump from a bachelor’s degree to a PhD. The possibility to do your PhD depends on the program the student is applying for and their academic goals. So, make sure to check with your university whether a master is part of the requirements for doctoral studies in your institution.

You can conduct research in a subject you are passionate about

Because a PhD can be challenging in so many ways, in order to have the required resilience to pursue it, you should make sure to choose the right topic for your research project. Start by choosing a subject you are really enthusiastic about, that you are eager to deepen your knowledge about. The idea is to give yourself this extra motivation to carry on your research and achieve your goals.

You are allowed to contact a supervisor of interest

This means getting to know beforehand a potential supervisor to find out if they share your interest in your research topic. It is also a great way to find out if you can work well with this person. Since you’ll have to interact a lot with this person for the duration of your PhD, this proactive approach can only be beneficial.

You have access to several scholarships and funding programs

We will elaborate a bit more on this subject later in this guide. But know just that it is rare to not have any funding option for a PhD research in Ireland. There are programs both for European and non-European students. They are either from the government of Ireland, the Irish Research Council and even the universities themselves.

You benefit from a 2-year visa extension after you graduate

At the completion of your studies in Ireland, you have a 24-month stay back option you can take advantage of. This is one of the reasons why Ireland is a popular study destination in Europe. Students can apply for an extension of their visa for 2 more years in order to seek employment in Ireland.

How long is a PhD course in Ireland?

The typical duration of a full-time PhD in Ireland is 3 to 4 years. A part-time PhD, on the other hand, will take 5 to 6 years to complete. The academic year in the country is the same as in the UK, with 2 semesters a year: from September to December, then from January to April. In case the students don’t complete the requirements for their degree within these timelines, they can apply for a permission to continue their research.

Supervision and support during the PhD

During your PhD, your host university will assign you at least one supervisor. This supervisor is an active academic whose main responsibilities are to manage and oversee your research and studies. In some case, there might be a co-supervisor who supports the primary supervisor.

There is also a Research Study Panel (RSP) whose role is to monitor your progress, provide advice and support the student-supervisor relationship. You will be assigned a RSP within the first trimester upon your registration. Moreover, you’ll have to meet them at least twice in the first year and once a year the following years.

Assessment and examination

Upon their registration, full-time PhD students initially enroll into a Masters of Philosophy (MPhil). They must then complete an assessment in their first year to upgrade to a PhD.

In the following years, students conduct research and produce a written thesis of up to 100,000 words in length. This dissertation must include details such as the context, description, methodology and result of the research, and will be assessed during an oral examination (viva voce).

Moreover, before they submit their thesis, students need the approval of their primary supervisor. Furthermore, the oral defense of the dissertation is assessed by an examination committee including an internal and an external examiner.

Applying for a PhD in Ireland

As already mentioned earlier, a master is not mandatory for your admission in a PhD program in Ireland. Also, application for a PhD program in the country is pretty straightforward. You’ll get admission as long as you comply to the requirements set by your university of choice.

Read our guide on the requirements to study at Irish universities .

A proof of an excellent command of the English language is also mandatory, with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5. Along with this, you have to provide your latest academic transcripts (master or bachelor’s degree), as some programs may be more competitive than others.

Moreover, as in most PhD application, you need to provide a research proposal. It should include details about the research you wish to conduct, how you will do it and why it should be approved. This research proposal should be approved by a panel of expert before you can start your PhD program.

Like for the master’s degree in Ireland , it can happen that your university asks you to apply via the Postgraduate Application Centre ( PAC ). It’s an online registration portal for postgraduate studies for most Irish universities, which guides you throughout all the application process. The advantage of the PAC platform is that you can make multiple application, with a €50 fee.

PhD fees in Ireland for international students

The cost of a PhD in Ireland starts at €9,000 a year for international students. But some programs may cost as high as €30,000 per year. And business studies and medicine are the most expensive ones. Moreover, it’s quite rare for a PhD to not come with some form of scholarship, grant or bursary. Many universities provide monetary support, that are available for both local and international students.

PhD scholarships in Ireland for international students

Here are some options of funding for your PhD studies in the Emerald Isle.

It’s a system that joins research students with a partner enterprise for their postgraduate degree. The student’s research topic should then be directly related to the partner organization which can be a company, a governmental body or a charity. And by the end of the degree, students will gain both research and professional skills.

To benefit from this scholarship, applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree. The program is open both to domestic and foreign students, and it includes the same benefits as for the Irish Government postgraduate scholarship.

Scholarships from Irish universities

Can I work while doing a PhD in Ireland?

The answer is yes! You can definitely get a job to earn an extra-income while doing your PhD, without the need of a work permit. However, if you’re a non-European citizen, you’ll need a valid Irish Resident Permit (IRP) as well as the Stamp 2, which allow you to work a maximum of 20 hours a week during the academic year. And like for any student job in Ireland , you can work up to 40 hours a week during holidays.

You can check our guide on the subject to find out all the other requirements to work during your studies. Moreover, you can also get an employment contract with your host university. This is the case for students who enroll in a structured PhD with job placement or engagement with a research enterprise partner included. Check with your university to find out more on the subject.

Inside DCU: An Insider's Perspective

  • I chose DCU due to its curriculum and research that professors were doing. Also I liked the academic structure of DCU ,
  • DCU Campus is really good with a really beautiful library for studying, Also the people in DCU are really helpful and supportive which generally doesn't happen anywhere else
  • Nothing for now to dislike about the university since each and every thing is well organised and everything is kept in mind when it comes to academics or anything else.

Overall experience is very good, Good faculty, Good University, Helping people

Yes, I got DCU scholarship of 2000Euros

  • The main purpose for choosing this university was the course they where offering and the course structure. The subjects I wanted to study in my masters where available so I decided to go with this university as they have one of the best alumni network in Ireland and the best job opportunity university in the world. ,
  • The course structure and the faculty and the campus location and the campus facilities which make you visit the campus multiple times if you don't have lectures also then also you can visit the different campus and have a quality time.,
  • There are not such dislike only the main would be that if the masters would have been of 1.5 years or 2 years it would have been great. As 1 years of masters is little hectic and it gives you less time for modules and as the masters project requires a lot of time so it becomes hectic some time to complete all the 8 modules along with the masters project .

The experience is very much nice as I enjoyed my time in the university with the academics as well as the other activities and chilling in the campus and different function by the university . The playground areas movie nights which will make you feel like a home in the university itself.

Lifetime experience in 1 year

  • One of the best in Ireland. Comes in the top 5 universities Considered the best for business School. ,
  • Extra curricular activities Diversity and Inclusivity Big campus and sports facilities Student support services Location and student accommodation Faculty is diverse with good academic experience. They are friendly and very cooperative and supportive.
  • Learning materials for all the course modules can be updated as per the modern standards. The materials are still based on conventional studies which might be a drawback especially when pursuing a degree like Masters. Faculty should be hired on the basis of experience but also on their communication skills. Few of the faculty members, coming from different countries sometimes lack in their communication skills.

Overall experience is good. If you have the will and enthusiasm to participate in different activities along with your studies, then it can be a very good learning experience.

Student friendly university

  • I liked the curriculum of the program initially and the fact that those were the industry requirements. ,
  • Friendly university, student centric, lots of opportunities. DCU had a lot of clubs and societies and opportunities for students. As compared to traditional Universities, they are open to ideas. It's best to stay on campus when here
  • Course wasn't that great. Overall the university was good but the MSc in Digital Marketing course wasn't up to the level and the expectations. Moreover there are no placements or internships by the university

In terms of facilities, infrastructure and overall university experience DCU is an amazing option. However, the MSc in Digital Marketing course still needs some work in terms of structuring it, finding stable faculty and standardizing the course. For most of the masters programs they don't have a placement

  • My course program International Relations had the best faculty with years of experience in the field, the course work was structured flexibly and there were many options to choose from in the field of electives. ,
  • Very accommodating of student needs. The teachers in my course were always available to help and solve queries. The coursework was very comprehensive and the teachers were well-qualified to teach their respective subjects.
  • There is nothing specific since I had a very positive experience at the University. It is not to say there are aspects that are not desirable however I have not experienced so not the best person to answer.

It was really a good experience and I must for IR, I truly recommend Dublin City University.

My University Dublin City University offered me a partial scholarship of 2000 Euro on the full application fee. No separate application is needed, it is offered to all candidates on merit.

Dublin City University: A Review

  • I chose the course and the university with consideration to Brexit and the ample of opportunities that lies ahead in this career. ,
  • The University is comprised of 3 different campus sites each 20-30 minutes of walking distance from one another within the beautiful city. The university administration and the faculty are all very supportive and goes out of their ways to ensure the foreign students feel comfortable with the place as well as the teaching methods.
  • The vast exposure one receives and ample of opportunities to join and participate multiple clubs and societies allows for enthralling experience that makes it very difficulty to dislike the university.

The University takes pride in hosting well versed faculty and allowing students to conduct their own research in academics and practical world to upskill and nurture oneself for real-life scenarios. The faculty, and staff continues to support you long after the course completion so you can be sure you are in good hands even when abroad.

Sick leave

All staff are eligible for sick leave with pay, calculated on a pro-rata basis. This includes seven days of uncertified sick leave in any rolling four-year period.

Additional sick leave must be certified or deducted from your annual leave entitlement for the current or succeeding year – subject to approval from the head of school or unit. Alternatively, it may be deducted from your salary.

Staff with three or more consecutive days’ absence must be certified by a medical practitioner. They may be eligible to:

Get full pay less social welfare illness benefit for certified sick leave up to 92 days pro rata, in line with their contract duration

Half pay after that for another 91 days pro rata, in line with their contract duration. This is subject to a maximum of 183 days’ paid sick leave in a rolling four-year period.

You may be eligible for pro rata sick leave. Check your contract for more information.

You are entitled to five days’ sick pay a year. Your employer pays sick pay at 70% of your normal pay, up to a maximum of €110 a day. You must be employed for at least 13 weeks to qualify for statutory sick pay.

Yes, all DCU full-time and part-time fixed staff must join the pension scheme by law.

The income continuance scheme gives you a replacement income of up to 75% of your annual salary if you become ill and are unable to work, and your sick pay has reduced to half pay or stopped completely.

The plan provides a lump sum of typically twice your annual salary if you die. You will get a once-off lump sum if you are diagnosed with one of the specified illnesses listed in the policy document. You receive an extra 10% of your salary if you claim from the plan for over two years.

The plan costs 1.9% of your salary.

Once you have cancelled, you will need to sign a medical declaration or provide medical information if you wish to rejoin the plan. A change in medical history in the interim may affect your ability to rejoin the plan.

DCU buys annual commuter tickets on behalf of employees.  The cost is recuperated through payroll over a 12-month period or over the remainder of your contract, if your contract is less than 12 months.

This means you do not pay PRSI, USCI or pension-related deductions, resulting in significant savings on travel expenses.

For more information, visit the travel pass scheme webpage .

DCU buys new bicycles, including accessories, on behalf of employees. The cost is recuperated through payroll over a 12-month period or over the remainder of your contract, if your contract is less than 12 months.
