Descriptive Essay: Christmas Traditions in My Family

Despite how the modern message may have been diluted down the years, each Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus with traditions drawn from Christianity as well as other ones personal to our own family. Each family I know follows many of the same traditions as we do, however each put their own spin on it and make it their own. My Christmas is special because of these very traditions which we have formed as a family.

The 1st of December is my favorite day in the year because it marks the beginning of my Christmas. On the 1st of December my family and I go to the shops and buy a special new tree decoration. My parents have been collecting Christmas decorations for years and nothing matches on purpose. Christmas spirit is everywhere on the 1st of December, the shops play festive music and are usually decorated down to the last detail. It is this date for me that marks the beginning of the season.

We all put the tree up together the weekend after. We play Christmas music in the background, wear the Santa hats we dug out of the loft and have a drink. After the tree is up, the excessive amount of food has been brought, then the family all come down for the big day. We live all over now so the traditions have had to be adapted slightly. Christmas is the time when we all make the effort to come down at the same time. We go on the 24th of December and play family games all day. We have a buffet dinner which we call an ‘itsy bitsy’ then make our way to midnight mass at the local church.

On Christmas day we wake up early, around 8 a.m. and have breakfast together. We don’t open our presents as soon as we get up as we all agree that we love the anticipation. When we do get round to opening our gifts, after dinner has been put on and the vegetables have been peeled, one of us hands each present out, one at a time.

After presents we all help to get the dinner dished up and the table laid. For dinner we have a turkey with all of the trimmings, we say grace before dinner and then pull our crackers. We have a competition to see who can keep their hat on for the whole day.

After dinner comes the washing up, which we all help with. Then we enjoy family games which we either got that day or we dig out the old classics. The games are my favorite part of the day. It is something which everyone gets involved in and has a great laugh over.

Our family traditions at Christmas have been adapted since people have moved away however, we always make the effort to be together and play games together. Our traditions are much the same as any family; we eat, we give gifts and be merry.

Christmas is a well-known Christian holiday set in December, celebrated the world over and famed for its decorations and Santa Clause. Christmas was brought back to limelight around 800 A.D. when the emperor Charlemagne received the crown on Christmas day. During the 17th century, the Puritans had Christmas banned because it was associated with drunkenness and different other misbehavior.

It was made a proper holiday around 1660 but was still quite disreputable. Around the early 1900s, the Oxford movement of the Anglican Communion church started and this led to the revival of Christmas.

Presents are placed under the Christmas tree in wrapped gift boxes and are not to be opened until Christmas day. The church is also decorated for the special event. Thorough cleaning of the churches is also done to usher in Christmas. Songs and skits to be performed on Christmas day.

People usually spend a lot on Christmas and so saving money for these plans should be the earliest preparation among all these. Families also plan to travel to stay together during this celebration period. Traditionally turkey is the common meal across the world in this day. Cards are also written to friends and family to wish them a happy holiday and to show love.

Christmas carols are played on radios and televisions to mark the day. Most families start by going to church where performances and songs are done. Then later, they join their families to exchange gifts and celebrate with food and music. Happiness during Christmas is like no other.

The holiday season is supposed to be "the most wonderful time of the year." And for plenty of families, it is exactly that—kids gleefully opening presents as adults catch up with family members they haven't seen in years. It can be a time of embracing traditions, new and old alike.

Here, 10 families from the country open up about how they celebrate this special time of year. They share everything from hunkering down with little ones to new traditions to try with older kids. We are very fortunate to have our extended family living close to us. Ever since I was a little girl, my family would host a large Christmas Eve party for family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who didn't have someone to celebrate with. All were welcome. Now that I am older with a family of my own, we like to continue this on and we host on Christmas Eve with an open invitation to all.

What is Your Favorite Christmas Tradition?

Our favorite Christmas tradition is hosting a give-back event called Santa Photos for a Cause, benefiting Make-A-Wish and kids battling a critical illness. This year will be our fourth year hosting the event. Each year it has grown in awareness and money raised—even during COVID-19! We put on an event where Santa comes and families can take their photo with him for free. We accept donations, but they are not required. It's been a wonderful way for us to keep everything in perspective during a season that can become all about indulgence and gifts. It also allows us to teach our kids and others about the importance of giving to those in need, especially during the Christmas season! We were so impacted by being able to serve others that we've since started an organization called World Share, where we make it easy for people to serve and make an impact in their own communities throughout the year.

My immediate family makeup is just me and my partner of 10 years, Rebecca, and our cat, Penny. Now that my younger sisters have families of their own, Christmas has been pushed around a little bit. Meaning that, instead of Christmas Eve on Dec. 24 and Christmas on Dec. 25, we all get together the night of Dec. 25 and that becomes our Christmas Eve.

There are now eight adults, and three littles (with one more arriving any day!), and we still all sit together on our Christmas Eve and read "‘Twas the Night Before Christmas" together. Then we celebrate Christmas Day on Dec. 26!

As an adult, my wife and I have created our own Christmas traditions! We are both very family-oriented and want to make sure that we are able to gift our families with what we would like to. That being said, we don’t celebrate our own Christmas in December, because our focus is on the rest of our families. Instead, we celebrate in January (although sometimes it has been in February!) when the Christmas chaos slows down, and we can adequately focus on one another.

We treat January as our “Christmas month,” and that means we put up our tree and our decorations, and we make a Christmas movie box. Our movie box has a handful of wrapped Christmas movies, as well as wrapped candy for each of us. Each Friday night leading up to our Christmas, we pull out a wrapped movie and a wrapped candy for each, pop some popcorn, and enjoy some quiet time just the two of us.

On our Christmas Eve, we gift each other with new Christmas jammies and one of us is in charge of special Christmas Eve snacks for our last Christmas movie. (The other is in charge of breakfast for Christmas morning!) Christmas Eve afternoon, we finish wrapping whatever gifts need to go under the tree, and then stuffing stockings (which also include gifts for the cat)!

On our Christmas day, we open gifts after we have our special Christmas breakfast, then we spend the day watching Christmas movies and playing board games. We spend the evening making a special Christmas dinner together and dancing in the kitchen.

My family instilled a love of traditions from a very young age, especially when it came to Christmas. On Christmas Eve, each of us kids would get to open a gift of our own, and then we would open a Disney movie. Then we would sit down as an entire family and watch the movie together. It was the only time of the year that my parents would sit and watch a movie with us kids.

After the movie, we would read "‘Twas the Night Before Christmas" before going to bed. At first, my parents read it to us, but as we got older and were able to read, we would pass the book around and each of us would read a page out loud. The book was the one thing we were still able to do even when the three of us got older and got to the point where we had other commitments on Christmas Eve. We would just read it with all of us on speakerphone instead!

As a teacher, I have my own Christmas tradition each year with my students! Each year, we have a Polar Express party just before our Christmas break. This means I stay late the night before and decorate the room with a train and balloon “lights,” and place Christmas presents around the tree beside our “fireplace."

The following day, they each get a Santa hat and “board the train” (they get “tickets” just before they walk in the door), and then we spend our entire day playing Christmas games (jingle bell toss, Santa cup knockdown, Christmas obstacle course, etc.), making hot chocolate and a graham cracker train snack, and then we read "The Polar Express" and watch the movie before we sit “on the train” and indulge in our Christmas snacks and hot chocolate.

I also wrap 18 different pairs of Christmas socks individually, handing them each a package at Circle Time, and I read "‘Twas the Night Before Christmas" to them. Each time I turn the page, they pass their package to the friend next to them, and the packages circulate around the group. They have no idea what’s in them!

When the book is done, they get to open the package that they are holding, and they put on their new socks to wear for the rest of the day. When they go home at the end of the day, they get a bell on a string with a tag that reads, “The bell still rings for all those who truly believe.”

Christmas has started looking a little different for us since starting a family! We celebrate Christmas Eve at home with just us, and on Christmas morning we also have just our little family.

After unwrapping gifts, we travel to see my family for the rest of Christmas Day, eating a big meal there and spending time having fun as a big group.

Our favorite Christmas tradition is the Santa Sack tradition! As someone with a background in nonprofits, I wanted our boys to start learning about the importance of giving back to others, and we started this tradition last year when our oldest was two and a half.

The concept behind the Santa Sack is so easy! Your kids choose toys that they no longer play with or want to fill a special sack, which Santa takes with him on Christmas Eve to give to other children around the world who might not get as many toys this year. It sparks a lot of important conversations around different families both around the world and in our own community.

My partner and I are staying together for the kids, so it makes things a bit awkward. We usually stay home and invite both sets of grandparents over, as well as my husband's sister and her family. We usually start the day opening gifts with just us and the kids and my mother, then a little later the others arrive and we have a Christmas dinner together.

We have many traditions. We always cut our own Christmas tree and decorate it as a family. We go all out on decorating inside our home. My most special decorations are a set of figurines that belonged to my great-grandmother. There are special books we read every year, too. My favorite is one from my own childhood called "The Hedgehogs' Christmas Tree." We usually attend Mass on Christmas Eve.

We start on Christmas Eve, either hosting family members at our house or at my sister's house down the street from us. Then we go to church (or watch it online) and spend the rest of the day at home together playing with toys and video chatting with out-of-town family members.

My favorite Christmas tradition is how we spend a weekend together every year in the beginning of December. We start out by going shopping for new Christmas tree ornaments that represent something special to each of us from that year. After that, we go home and spend the day putting up our decorations. The next day, we bake a bunch of different cookies and when it gets dark outside, we drive through neighborhoods looking at all of the Christmas lights.

We usually travel to Australia every second Christmas to visit with family, but since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been no travel overseas.

The one thing that always bothered me was that once the Christmas morning unwrapping was done, you were left with a bit of a present hangover, lots of garbage, underappreciated toys, and the dread of having to wait another whole year to do it again. I’m always inspired by the giving I see during this season and am especially impressed when I see parents actively engaging their children in the act of giving.

My family has our own tradition rooted in giving back. Several years ago, we decided that our kids get enough “stuff” and that Santa has been very generous to them over the years. It seemed excessive to be then exchanging presents with grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. We knew we could do better than that. We wondered how our big, extended family could celebrate the holidays together by giving to those outside of our family. My sister rallied us all and set up a new plan. Every December, my sister collects our funds, purchases gift cards, and then gathers all of her nieces and nephews to have them write out cards for our friends living with homelessness. We all then hit the streets to share our gift cards and enjoy some friendly interactions and holiday greetings with these lovely community members. The lessons in this act of giving are endless. Our kids appreciate what they have, and learn the valuable lesson around giving—that it is so much better than receiving. It also provides them with positive interactions with people living with homelessness.

When I was a small child, Christmas Eve was spent at my grandparents' dairy farm in Western Pennsylvania. My mom was one of 10, and by the time I was born, all of her siblings had married and had children. I had 10 aunts, 10 uncles, and over 50 cousins, second cousins, first cousins once removed, and so on. Add into that mix neighbors, friends, friends of friends, and believe me, the old farmhouse was packed. There was food, and laughter, and a visit from real live Santa Clause. Today, that was a lot of tradition to live up to. I don't think my husband and I knew 50 people when we first got married and moved far away from both of our families. On Christmas, we invite friends over for posole, tamales, and several cups of cheer. One family, in particular, has joined us for more than fifteen years. They are our adopted family, and we rarely celebrate any occasion without them.

On Christmas Day, my childrens' habit has become a tradition. My kids (yes, now in college) eat cookies for breakfast, then stay in pajamas all day—even eating Christmas dinner in their pj's! We spend the day relaxing together. Regardless of our employment, my husband and I make sure we have Christmas day off from work so our family can have the whole day together.

I knew that I wanted to create a holiday tradition that would rival my childhood memories. The first year we were married, we visited a glassblowing artist, and I bought my first hand-blown glass Christmas bauble. I continued buying one glass bauble every year, usually from a vacation spot or someplace significant we'd been to that year.

When my two children were born, I began buying one bauble for me and one for each of them. My oldest is twenty years old, and I now have enough handblown glass to fill a seven-foot tree. When my children move to their own homes, they will have their own collection of glass Christmas balls, as well as memories of all the years we spent visiting family and friends and picking glass baubles. Our traditions don't stop there. Being a family of four, without any relatives within 300 miles, I tried very hard to give my kids traditions they could remember and, if they like, carry on. I mentioned I was from Western PA, and we Pennsylvanians love our cookies. Every year I make a triple batch of my mother's fabulous gingerbread cookie dough. That's enough to make cookies and a gingerbread house. Everyone also picks a cookie for me to make. My children and husband decorate the gingerbread house and cookies while I make the other cookies they picked for that year. My husband is originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, a land rich with its own holiday traditions. For Christmas eve, I make a stew called posole. It's a mixture of pork shoulder, hominy, and red chile pods; it is delicious!

History Behind Christmas

Christmas is celebrated every year on 25th December. However, the precise date of the birth of Jesus is unclear. December 25th was 1st celebrated as the date of birth of Jesus by Sextus Julius Africanus in 221. Later on, it became a universally accepted date. One explanation is that 25th December is the Christianizing of the dies solis invicti nati or day of the birth of the unconquered sun”. It is also a popular Roman holiday. Thus, the 25th of December became a widely accepted day as the birth of Jesus. The festival was widely celebrated starting from the 9th Century. By the end of the 18th Century, the practice of giving presents became established. Later on, the practice of singing carols such as ‘Deck the Halls’, “Here We Come A-Wassailing”, the central role of Santa Claus, and sending cards became popular.

Many people honour the birth of Jesus by decorating a Christmas tree, decking it out in lights, and exchanging gifts with loved ones. Around this time, a lot of people begin to plan their New Year's parties.

Christmas serves as a reminder of the value of sharing and giving with friends and family. It is believed that the festival of Christmas and birth of Jesus marks the beginning of wonderful things in the world. It is often a time to reflect on nature and the reason for our existence. Despite being a Christian holiday, Christmas is one of those occasions that is celebrated by people of all faiths and religions worldwide. The heart of this celebration is what brings people together so strongly.

Christmas is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be the Messiah. The origins of the Christmas holiday can be traced back to the mid-fourth century in Asia Minor, now known as Turkey. Christians congregated to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of Christ during the celebration, and it was customary to consume bread and wine during this time. Christians began to celebrate the festival of Christmas by lighting candles and singing carols by candlelight throughout Europe. Christmas is now observed by people of many faiths in a variety of locations around the world. Many people remember the birth of Jesus by decorating a joyous Christmas tree, dressing it out in lights, and exchanging gifts with friends and family.

The festival of Christmas serves as a reminder of the value of sharing and giving with friends and family. Christmas demonstrates the value of pleasure and joy. It is also a chance for us to make amends for past behaviours that we aren't proud of. It is often a time to reflect on nature and the reason for our existence. Christmas celebrations are often followed by New Year’s celebrations. Students get a week long winter break which they spend with their family and friends. But, Christmas has its roots in the old Roman Empire, where it was first celebrated a few decades after Jesus' birth. Saturnalia, a Pagan festival, served as the inspiration for Christmas. The goal of this celebration was to mark the end of winter and the return of the sun. Christians began celebrating Christmas on the final day of Saturnalia in the fourth century. The goal was to encourage the pagans to view this time as positive. As a result, many pagans turned to Christianity on the promise that they may continue to celebrate their traditions.

My Christmas Holiday

Christmas is a time for gifting and sharing, but for me, the main focus is on having fun. I really enjoy myself at this time of year. Family is important to me, therefore I try to spend as much time with them as I can. The highlight of the holiday season is food, including candies, tamales, doughnuts, pastries, cake, rice, beans, and the gifts that we all get. Family, close friends, and holiday gatherings are some of the things that I enjoy the most.

On Christmas Eve, I get up early and get ready to clean the house. My relatives then begin to visit once the house is clean. We discuss old stories that have occurred in our lives over the course of the year during the time I spend with my family. Tamales are a significant Christmas tradition; it's a long process to make tamales, so it's the greatest time for my mother and aunts to catch up.

We assemble in the living room to open our presents at midnight. Afterwards, I tidy up the mess left by all the gifts. My friends visit the next day to wish Merry Christmas. We usually do secret Santa so no one has to buy presents for everyone, instead everyone gets one friend for whom they have to buy a gift. This year, I got a heart shaped pendant from my friend along with socks that had Santa and his reindeer printed on it. We all clicked many pictures wearing red and white Christmas sweaters and scarves. We usually end our day watching Christmas movies till late at night and eating the leftovers from dinner.

Christmas is celebrated on December 25 and is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. December 25—Christmas Day—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

How Did Christmas Start?

The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before the arrival of the man called Jesus , early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight.

In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrated Yule from December 21, the winter solstice, through January. In recognition of the return of the sun, fathers and sons would bring home large logs, which they would set on fire. The people would feast until the log burned out, which could take as many as 12 days. The Norse believed that each spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf that would be born during the coming year.

The end of December was a perfect time for celebration in most areas of Europe. At that time of year, most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter. For many, it was the only time of year when they had a supply of fresh meat. In addition, most wine and beer made during the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking.

In Germany, people honored the pagan god Oden during the mid-winter holiday. Germans were terrified of Oden, as they believed he made nocturnal flights through the sky to observe his people, and then decide who would prosper or perish. Because of his presence, many people chose to stay inside.

Saturnalia and Christmas

In Rome, where winters were not as harsh as those in the far north, Saturnalia—a holiday in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture—was celebrated. Beginning in the week leading up to the winter solstice and continuing for a full month, Saturnalia was a hedonistic time, when food and drink were plentiful and the normal Roman social order was turned upside down. For a month, enslaved people were given temporary freedom and treated as equals. Business and schools were closed so that everyone could participate in the holiday's festivities.

Also around the time of the winter solstice, Romans observed Juvenalia, a feast honoring the children of Rome. In addition, members of the upper classes often celebrated the birthday of Mithra, the god of the unconquerable sun, on December 25. It was believed that Mithra, an infant god, was born of a rock. Is Christmas Really the Day Jesus Was Born?

In the early years of Christianity , Easter was the main holiday; the birth of Jesus was not celebrated. In the fourth century, church officials decided to institute the birth of Jesus as a holiday. Unfortunately, the Bible does not mention date for his birth (a fact Puritans later pointed out in order to deny the legitimacy of the celebration). Although some evidence suggests that his birth may have occurred in the spring (why would shepherds be herding in the middle of winter?), Pope Julius I chose December 25. It is commonly believed that the church chose this date in an effort to adopt and absorb the traditions of the pagan Saturnalia festival. First called the Feast of the Nativity, the custom spread to Egypt by 432 and to England by the end of the sixth century.

By holding Christmas at the same time as traditional winter solstice festivals, church leaders increased the chances that Christmas would be popularly embraced, but gave up the ability to dictate how it was celebrated. By the Middle Ages , Christianity had, for the most part, replaced pagan religion.

On Christmas, believers attended church, then celebrated raucously in a drunken, carnival-like atmosphere similar to today’s Mardi Gras . Each year, a beggar or student would be crowned the “lord of misrule” and eager celebrants played the part of his subjects. The poor would go to the houses of the rich and demand their best food and drink. If owners failed to comply, their visitors would most likely terrorize them with mischief. Christmas became the time of year when the upper classes could repay their real or imagined “debt” to society by entertaining less fortunate citizens.

When Christmas Was Cancelled

In the early 17th century, a wave of religious reform changed the way Christmas was celebrated in Europe. When Oliver Cromwell and his Puritan forces took over England in 1645, they vowed to rid England of decadence and, as part of their effort, cancelled Christmas. By popular demand, Charles II was restored to the throne and, with him, came the return of the popular holiday.

The pilgrims , English separatists that came to America in 1620, were even more orthodox in their Puritan beliefs than Cromwell. As a result, Christmas was not a holiday in early America. From 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was actually outlawed in Boston . Anyone exhibiting the Christmas spirit was fined five shillings. By contrast, in the Jamestown settlement, Captain John Smith reported that Christmas was enjoyed by all and passed without incident.

After the American Revolution , English customs fell out of favor, including Christmas. In fact, Christmas wasn’t declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870.

Washington Irving Reinvents Christmas in America

It wasn’t until the 19th century that Americans began to embrace Christmas. Americans re-invented Christmas, and changed it from a raucous carnival holiday into a family-centered day of peace and nostalgia. But what about the 1800s piqued American interest in the holiday?

The early 19th century was a period of class conflict and turmoil. During this time, unemployment was high and gang rioting by the disenchanted classes often occurred during the Christmas season. In 1828, the New York city council instituted the city’s first police force in response to a Christmas riot. This catalyzed certain members of the upper classes to begin to change the way Christmas was celebrated in America.

In 1819, best-selling author Washington Irving wrote The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, gent. , a series of stories about the celebration of Christmas in an English manor house. The sketches feature a squire who invited the peasants into his home for the holiday. In contrast to the problems faced in American society, the two groups mingled effortlessly. In Irving’s mind, Christmas should be a peaceful, warm-hearted holiday bringing groups together across lines of wealth or social status. Irving’s fictitious celebrants enjoyed “ancient customs,” including the crowning of a Lord of Misrule. Irving’s book, however, was not based on any holiday celebration he had attended—in fact, many historians say that Irving’s account actually “invented” tradition by implying that it described the true customs of the season.

'A Christmas Carol'

Also around this time, English author Charles Dickens created the classic holiday tale, A Christmas Carol . The story’s message-the importance of charity and good will towards all humankind-struck a powerful chord in the United States and England and showed members of Victorian society the benefits of celebrating the holiday.

The family was also becoming less disciplined and more sensitive to the emotional needs of children during the early 1800s. Christmas provided families with a day when they could lavish attention-and gifts-on their children without appearing to “spoil” them.

As Americans began to embrace Christmas as a perfect family holiday, old customs were unearthed. People looked toward recent immigrants and Catholic and Episcopalian churches to see how the day should be celebrated. In the next 100 years, Americans built a Christmas tradition all their own that included pieces of many other customs, including decorating trees, sending holiday cards and gift-giving.

Although most families quickly bought into the idea that they were celebrating Christmas how it had been done for centuries, Americans had really re-invented a holiday to fill the cultural needs of a growing nation.

Who Invented Santa Claus?

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back to a monk named St. Nicholas who was born in Turkey around A. D. 280. St. Nicholas gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick, becoming known as the protector of children and sailors.

St. Nicholas first entered American popular culture in the late 18th century in New York, when Dutch families gathered to honor the anniversary of the death of “Sint Nikolaas” (Dutch for Saint Nicholas), or “Sinter Klaas” for short. “Santa Claus” draws his name from this abbreviation.

In 1822, Episcopal minister Clement Clarke Moore wrote a Christmas poem called “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas,” more popularly known today by it’s first line: “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas.” The poem depicted Santa Claus as a jolly man who flies from home to home on a sled driven by reindeer to deliver toys.

The iconic version of Santa Claus as a jolly man in red with a white beard and a sack of toys was immortalized in 1881, when political cartoonist Thomas Nast drew on Moore's poem to create the image of Old Saint Nick we know today.

Throughout Dickens’ allegorical novella, his aim is to passionately highlight how such a joyful season can create positive role models for Scrooge. The constant succession of images relating to joy around Christmas may well have been utilised to demonstrate how readers too can learn and improve from the inspirational characters during the novella.

Primarily, within stave 1 of the novella, Dickens utilises the characterisation of Fred as the embodiment of the Christmas spirit with all the positive virtues associated with Christmas. This is evidenced when Fred is described as coming in ‘all in a glow’ with ‘his face ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled.’ Here the use of the noun ‘glow’ connotes light and warmth which is strongly linked to hope and purity. This highlights the contrast between Fred and his uncle Scrooge, who was described as ‘hard and sharp as flint.’ Structurally, introducing Fred immediately after Scrooge focuses the reader’s attention on the clear variation between the two and all of the positive qualities that Scrooge lacks. Furthermore, Fred highlights the belief that Christmas is a time for unity within the social hierarchy although it ‘never puts a scrap of gold or silver’ in his pocket and he frowns upon his uncle, completely consumed in the greed for money. Dickens may have done this to foreshadow Scrooge’s transformation into a better man as a result of the inspirational role models around him during the novella. Alternatively, Dickens may have used Fred and Scrooge together to challenge the situation in Victorian Britain during the Industrial Revolution. Scrooge highlights all of the negative traits of upper class men during this time and Fred is a caring and benevolent character, who cares for people lower down on the social hierarchy.

Secondly, within the extract, Dickens utilises the characterisation of Fezziwig to suggest a clear contrast in the two employers. This is evidenced when Fezziwig ‘laughed all over himself, from his shoes to his organ of benevolence.’ The use of the abstract noun ‘benevolence’ suggests the joy and love Fezziwig has for Christmas time. Fezziwig’s kind, caring personality is another role model and catalyst for Scrooge’s transformation. Furthermore, Dickens presents Christmas as a joyful time through Fezziwig’s Christmas party. ‘Fuel was heaped upon the fire’ and the warehouse was transformed into a ‘snug, and warm’ ballroom filled with light. The use of the adjective ‘warm’ connotes kindness and comfort. The detail here in Fezziwig’s scene overwhelms the senses; his generosity is physical, emotional and palpable. As an employer he is the foil of Scrooge and presents all of the positive virtues that Scrooge lacks. Dickens may have done this to highlight a different side to capitalism. Alternatively, presenting Fezziwig as the embodiment of Christmas suggests the importance of Christmas and all of its positive qualities on everyone in society.

Thirdly, within the novella, Dickens utilises the Ghost of Christmas Present to personify Christmas itself. When the ghost appears it has set up an impressive feast of lights and food. This is evidenced when Scrooge’s room is filled with ‘the crisp leaves of holly, mistletoe and ivy reflected back the light, as if so many little mirrors had been scattered there, and such a mighty blaze went roaring up the chimney.’ The scene is hyperbolic and creates a clear contrast with the frugal state of Scrooge’s past Christmases. The use of the light imagery here provides a clear and undeniable tableau of the joyful Christmases Scrooge can afford but chooses to shun. Dickens may have done this to portray Christmas as a bright and familiar celebration which everyone should celebrate in harmony. A modern reader may feel hope that Scrooge will use his wealth to celebrate Christmas with all of the festivities that Christmas should include and celebrate it with the people that care for him, like his nephew Fred.

Finally, in ‘A Christmas Carol’ Dickens reinforces the theme of Christmas spirit through the Cratchit family. Dickens utilises Bob Cratchit to symbolise the true spirit of Christmas and the importance of family. This is evidenced at the Cratchit’s dinner where nobody remarked that it was ‘a small pudding for a large family’. The adjective ‘small’ emphasises the Cratchit’s lack of luxury and yet their enthusiasm in the scene is palpable. This highlights that this ‘small’ pudding was seen as an indulgence to them which is something Scrooge takes for granted. Furthermore, the Cratchit’s ‘four roomed house’ is filled with an overwhelming sense of energy and excitement, which exists as an antithesis of Scrooge’s ‘old…dreary’ abode. This is evidenced as the youngest Cratchit children ‘danced about the table’ this suggests the sense of energy despite their lowly status in society on this festive day. Dickens may have done this to suggest the importance of Christmas to all members of society. Although the Cratchit family are less fortunate than Scrooge or Fred their Christmas is filled with the love they have for each other. A reader may feel delighted to see this family enjoying Christmas day, contented with what they own and hope that Scrooge will see this family as a role model for his transformation.

What Sentencing Could Look Like if Trump Is Found Guilty

For all the attention to and debate over the unfolding trial of Donald Trump in Manhattan, there has been surprisingly little of it paid to a key element: its possible outcome and, specifically, the prospect that a former and potentially future president could be sentenced to prison time.

The case — brought by Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, against Mr. Trump — represents the first time in our nation’s history that a former president is a defendant in a criminal trial. As such, it has generated lots of debate about the case’s legal strength and integrity, as well as its potential impact on Mr. Trump’s efforts to win back the White House.

A review of thousands of cases in New York that charged the same felony suggests something striking: If Mr. Trump is found guilty, incarceration is an actual possibility. It’s not certain, of course, but it is plausible.

Jury selection has begun, and it’s not too soon to talk about what the possibility of a sentence, including a prison sentence, would look like for Mr. Trump, for the election and for the country — including what would happen if he is re-elected.

The case focuses on alleged interference in the 2016 election, which consisted of a hush-money payment Michael Cohen, the former president’s fixer at the time, made in 2016 to a porn star, Stormy Daniels, who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump. Mr. Bragg is arguing that the cover-up cheated voters of the chance to fully assess Mr. Trump’s candidacy.

This may be the first criminal trial of a former president in American history, but if convicted, Mr. Trump’s fate is likely to be determined by the same core factors that guide the sentencing of every criminal defendant in New York State Court.

Comparable cases. The first factor is the base line against which judges measure all sentences: how other defendants have been treated for similar offenses. My research encompassed almost 10,000 cases of felony falsifying business records that have been prosecuted across the state of New York since 2015. Over a similar period, the Manhattan D.A. has charged over 400 of these cases . In roughly the first year of Mr. Bragg’s tenure, his team alone filed 166 felony counts for falsifying business records against 34 people or companies.

Contrary to claims that there will be no sentence of incarceration for falsifying business records, when a felony conviction involves serious misconduct, defendants can be sentenced to some prison time. My analysis of the most recent data indicates that approximately one in 10 cases in which the most serious charge at arraignment is falsifying business records in the first degree and in which the court ultimately imposes a sentence, results in a term of imprisonment.

To be clear, these cases generally differ from Mr. Trump’s case in one important respect: They typically involve additional charges besides just falsifying records. That clearly complicates what we might expect if Mr. Trump is convicted.

Nevertheless, there are many previous cases involving falsifying business records along with other charges where the conduct was less serious than is alleged against Mr. Trump and prison time was imposed. For instance, Richard Luthmann was accused of attempting to deceive voters — in his case, impersonating New York political figures on social media in an attempt to influence campaigns. He pleaded guilty to three counts of falsifying business records in the first degree (as well as to other charges). He received a sentence of incarceration on the felony falsification counts (although the sentence was not solely attributable to the plea).

A defendant in another case was accused of stealing in excess of $50,000 from her employer and, like in this case, falsifying one or more invoices as part of the scheme. She was indicted on a single grand larceny charge and ultimately pleaded guilty to one felony count of business record falsification for a false invoice of just under $10,000. She received 364 days in prison.

To be sure, for a typical first-time offender charged only with run-of-the-mill business record falsification, a prison sentence would be unlikely. On the other hand, Mr. Trump is being prosecuted for 34 counts of conduct that might have changed the course of American history.

Seriousness of the crime. Mr. Bragg alleges that Mr. Trump concealed critical information from voters (paying hush money to suppress an extramarital relationship) that could have harmed his campaign, particularly if it came to light after the revelation of another scandal — the “Access Hollywood” tape . If proved, that could be seen not just as unfortunate personal judgment but also, as Justice Juan Merchan has described it, an attempt “to unlawfully influence the 2016 presidential election.”

History and character. To date, Mr. Trump has been unrepentant about the events alleged in this case. There is every reason to believe that will not change even if he is convicted, and lack of remorse is a negative at sentencing. Justice Merchan’s evaluation of Mr. Trump’s history and character may also be informed by the other judgments against him, including Justice Arthur Engoron’s ruling that Mr. Trump engaged in repeated and persistent business fraud, a jury finding that he sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll and a related defamation verdict by a second jury.

Justice Merchan may also weigh the fact that Mr. Trump has been repeatedly held in contempt , warned , fined and gagged by state and federal judges. That includes for statements he made that exposed witnesses, individuals in the judicial system and their families to danger. More recently, Mr. Trump made personal attacks on Justice Merchan’s daughter, resulting in an extension of the gag order in the case. He now stands accused of violating it again by commenting on witnesses.

What this all suggests is that a term of imprisonment for Mr. Trump, while far from certain for a former president, is not off the table. If he receives a sentence of incarceration, perhaps the likeliest term is six months, although he could face up to four years, particularly if Mr. Trump chooses to testify, as he said he intends to do , and the judge believes he lied on the stand . Probation is also available, as are more flexible approaches like a sentence of spending every weekend in jail for a year.

We will probably know what the judge will do within 30 to 60 days of the end of the trial, which could run into mid-June. If there is a conviction, that would mean a late summer or early fall sentencing.

Justice Merchan would have to wrestle in the middle of an election year with the potential impact of sentencing a former president and current candidate.

If Mr. Trump is sentenced to a period of incarceration, the reaction of the American public will probably be as polarized as our divided electorate itself. Yet as some polls suggest — with the caveat that we should always be cautious of polls early in the race posing hypothetical questions — many key swing state voters said they would not vote for a felon.

If Mr. Trump is convicted and then loses the presidential election, he will probably be granted bail, pending an appeal, which will take about a year. That means if any appeals are unsuccessful, he will most likely have to serve any sentence starting sometime next year. He will be sequestered with his Secret Service protection; if it is less than a year, probably in Rikers Island. His protective detail will probably be his main company, since Mr. Trump will surely be isolated from other inmates for his safety.

If Mr. Trump wins the presidential election, he can’t pardon himself because it is a state case. He will be likely to order the Justice Department to challenge his sentence, and department opinions have concluded that a sitting president could not be imprisoned, since that would prevent the president from fulfilling the constitutional duties of the office. The courts have never had to address the question, but they could well agree with the Justice Department.

So if Mr. Trump is convicted and sentenced to a period of incarceration, its ultimate significance is probably this: When the American people go to the polls in November, they will be voting on whether Mr. Trump should be held accountable for his original election interference.

Man sentenced to 27 years in prison for murder of stepfather in Gilbert

GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — A man will spend more than two decades behind bars for the Christmas Day murder of his stepfather in Gilbert . The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office says Michael Trevlyn Kaser, 49, was sentenced to 27 years in prison for the shooting death of Michael Kinney .

On Christmas Day in 2022, Gilbert police received a call about a car that crashed into a home near Recker and Warner roads. When officers arrived, they found the windshield of the car was riddled with bullet holes. Authorities say Kinney was in the driver’s seat, seriously injured from two bullet wounds. He died about 30 minutes later.

According to police, Kinney and his stepson, Kaser, began arguing while on their way back home from a Christmas dinner. As they were pulling into the garage, Kaser got out of the vehicle and began shooting at Kinney through the windshield.

Michael Kaser, 49, is set to spend the next 27 years behind bars in the 2022 shooting death of...

Court documents state as officers detained Kaser, he said, “I killed my stepfather,” and “I should have killed him a long time ago.” Authorities state Kaser claimed he was “done” with Kinney, alleging his stepfather had abused him for years.

Police found video clips from the dash cam of the vehicle, which showed the shooting.

“This individual showed no remorse for his actions – he wasn’t worried about shooting his mother who was also in the vehicle, he didn’t provide aid to his stepfather but instead continually rejoiced about what he’d done,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a statement. “This disregard for life will not go unpunished. He will be in prison for a very long time.”

In March, Kaser pled guilty to one count of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He will serve 25 years for the first count and 2.75 years for the assault charge consecutively.
