The science of chemistry is the study of matter’s characteristics and behaviour. It is a natural science that studies the components that comprise matter, as well as the compounds made up of atoms, molecules, and ions: their composition, structure, qualities, and behaviour, as well as the changes they go through while reacting with other things.

Q1: What are Atoms?

The proton, neutron, and electron make up an atom, which is the smallest recognised division of a chemical element. The central nucleus, which consists of protons and neutrons, holds 99% of the atom’s mass. Negatively charged electrons whirl about the nucleus in a variety of orbital shells.

  • Because the number of protons in an atom equals the number of electrons, atoms have no overall charge.

Q2: What do you understand about the Periodic Table?

The Periodic Table is how researchers have arranged the 100+ elements that constitute all matter. Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist, proposed it in 1869.

Mendeleev arranged the elements in order of the mass of their electrons, unlike prior attempts to organise the elements by characteristics. He also left empty spaces for items that had yet to be identified. As a result, he was able to forecast what those yet-to-be-discovered elements will be like.

The elements are arranged in the Periodic Table in two ways:

Q10: What are metallic/interstitial hydrides? How do they differ from molecular hydrides?

A hydride is a binary chemical that contains an element and a hydrogen atom.

Metallic hydrides are also known as interstitial hydrides. Metallic/interstitial hydrides are compounds in which transition metals and hydrogen are bonded together. They are the source of many d-Block and f-Block elements. Heat and electricity conductors, these hydrides are.

Molecular hydrides are hydrides that have additional electronegative atoms linked to the H-atom. The electrical conductivity of metallic hydrides is strong, while that of molecular hydrides is low. Metallic hydrides are solid, whereas molecular hydrides are gaseous.

Interstitial or metallic hydrides are formed when hydrogen and transition metals bind, as opposed to molecular hydrides, which contain bonding between an electronegative atom and hydrogen.

Q11: What are the sources of dissolved oxygen in water?

The sources of dissolved oxygen in water are photosynthesis, natural aeration, and mechanical aeration. The bulk of oxygen in a pond comes from microscopic algae. Through a process known as photosynthesis, these organisms produce oxygen and release it into the pond water.

Q13: What is the Ozone Layer?

The ozone layer is a vast shield that surrounds the Earth and extends 50 kilometres above the planet’s surface. Ozone is a unique oxygen molecule with the formula O 3 . It can be up to 20 kilometres thick, with the majority of the gas located in the stratosphere.

Our protection from UVB rays is provided by ozone gases. The Sun emits this harmful radiation, which is exceedingly deadly.

The ozone hole, which spans between 21 and 24 million square kilometres and is mostly over Antarctica, is between 21 and 24 million square kilometres in size. Ozone reacts with CFCs, which are pollutants used in refrigeration, causing enormous breaches in this protection layer.

(a) Elements with partially filled d orbitals are known as transition elements (also known as transition metals). The IUPAC defines transition elements as those that have a partially filled d subshell or those that can form stable cations with an incompletely filled d orbital. The electrical configuration of the transition element is (n-1)d 5 ns 1 or (n-1)d 10 ns 1 .

These elements have varying oxidation states because their valence electrons are in two different sets of orbitals, (n-1)d and ns. Both energy levels can be used to build bonds since the energy difference between them is so minimal. As a result, the oxidation states of transition elements vary.

  • The d-subshell of Mn(Z-25) has the most unpaired electrons, thus it has a high oxidation state(+7).
  • Scandium (Sc) is the sole element in these series that has a +3 oxidation state.

(b) Lanthanide contraction is the constant decrease in atomic and ionic radii (with the same charge) with rising atomic numbers as we progress from lanthanum to lutetium. Mischmetal is a lanthanide metal alloy that comprises 95% lanthanide metal and 5% Fe, along with traces of S, C, Ca, and Al. In Mg-based alloys, it’s used to create bullets, shells, and lighter flint.

What is chemistry?

Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the properties, composition, and structure of elements and compounds , how they can change, and the energy that is released or absorbed when they change.

How are chemistry and biology related?

Chemistry is the study of substances—that is, elements and compounds —while biology is the study of living things. However, these two branches of science meet in the discipline of biochemistry , which studies the substances in living things and how they change within an organism.

Every substance, whether naturally occurring or artificially produced, consists of one or more of the hundred-odd species of atoms that have been identified as elements. Although these atoms, in turn, are composed of more elementary particles, they are the basic building blocks of chemical substances; there is no quantity of oxygen , mercury , or gold , for example, smaller than an atom of that substance. Chemistry, therefore, is concerned not with the subatomic domain but with the properties of atoms and the laws governing their combinations and how the knowledge of these properties can be used to achieve specific purposes.

The great challenge in chemistry is the development of a coherent explanation of the complex behaviour of materials, why they appear as they do, what gives them their enduring properties, and how interactions among different substances can bring about the formation of new substances and the destruction of old ones. From the earliest attempts to understand the material world in rational terms, chemists have struggled to develop theories of matter that satisfactorily explain both permanence and change. The ordered assembly of indestructible atoms into small and large molecules , or extended networks of intermingled atoms, is generally accepted as the basis of permanence, while the reorganization of atoms or molecules into different arrangements lies behind theories of change. Thus chemistry involves the study of the atomic composition and structural architecture of substances, as well as the varied interactions among substances that can lead to sudden, often violent reactions.

Chemistry also is concerned with the utilization of natural substances and the creation of artificial ones. Cooking , fermentation , glass making, and metallurgy are all chemical processes that date from the beginnings of civilization. Today, vinyl, Teflon, liquid crystals, semiconductors , and superconductors represent the fruits of chemical technology. The 20th century saw dramatic advances in the comprehension of the marvelous and complex chemistry of living organisms, and a molecular interpretation of health and disease holds great promise. Modern chemistry, aided by increasingly sophisticated instruments, studies materials as small as single atoms and as large and complex as DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which contains millions of atoms. New substances can even be designed to bear desired characteristics and then synthesized. The rate at which chemical knowledge continues to accumulate is remarkable. Over time more than 8,000,000 different chemical substances, both natural and artificial, have been characterized and produced. The number was less than 500,000 as recently as 1965.

Intimately interconnected with the intellectual challenges of chemistry are those associated with industry. In the mid-19th century the German chemist Justus von Liebig commented that the wealth of a nation could be gauged by the amount of sulfuric acid it produced. This acid, essential to many manufacturing processes, remains today the leading chemical product of industrialized countries. As Liebig recognized, a country that produces large amounts of sulfuric acid is one with a strong chemical industry and a strong economy as a whole. The production, distribution, and utilization of a wide range of chemical products is common to all highly developed nations. In fact, one can say that the “iron age” of civilization is being replaced by a “polymer age,” for in some countries the total volume of polymers now produced exceeds that of iron .

It is known to everyone that hard work brings success. Ensure to read the chemistry textbooks recommended by The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).

This will help you to take a look at most of the questions you will see on the day of WAEC Chemistry examination.

Let me clearly state that questions are not imported from heaven but from those textbooks recommended by WAEC.

2. Read WAEC Chemistry Past Questions

WAEC usually picks questions from the previous years to form fresh questions. Studying WAEC Chemistry past questions would give you an idea of how WAEC Chemistry questions are set.

3. Start Preparing for WAEC 2023 :

Stop wasting your time. Now that you have gotten textbooks and past questions, the next thing is to begin your reading. Early reading and practice is good for you; you will pass well on WAEC 2023 Chemistry

4. Solve and try to understand every example and exercise you see in textbooks

It is very unfortunate that Secondary school students are fond of skipping exercises and even examples while studying textbooks.

They loved notebooks so much that they could ask, “can I read my Chemistry notebook and pass WAEC 2023?”. Don’t be scared of attempting exercises; they are there to help you. Face it and overcome it!

5.  Practise Regularly

Don’t get discouraged when certain topics are annoying, keep on practicing until you master everything. Never give up and never say never. Keep pushing….
