Landscape Architecture Foundation evaluates performance of eight ECT projects

  • May 29, 2020

Home   »   News & Insights   »   Landscape Architecture Foundation evaluates performance of eight ECT projects

Through performance evaluation of our built projects, our team seeks to understand the quality of design and restoration and to improve our use of technology. Post-occupancy evaluations measure the effectiveness of the landscape solutions and its connection to the health of related ecosystems, people, and economies. The quantified results enhance our ability to realize environmental, social, and economic sustainability for our clients.

The  LAF Case Study Investigation program  is an innovative collaboration between landscape architects and academic researchers. To date the program has evaluated the performance of more than 150 built landscape architecture projects throughout the world. Each year LAF publishes additional case studies on the Landscape Performance Series  website .

ECT is pleased to have contributed to the following 8 projects, demonstrating the quantifiable environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Case studies are widely used in most professions, including medicine, law, engineering, business, planning, and architecture. This practice is becoming increasingly common in landscape architecture as well. The primmy body of knowledge in landscape architecture is contained in the written and visual documentation—that is, stories—of projects, be it well-known ones such as New York's Central Park, or more modest projects such as a small neighborhood park. Together, these cases provide the primary form of education, innovation, and testing for the profession. They also serve as the collective record of the advancement and development of new knowledge in landscape architecture. This article summarizes a research project commissioned by the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) in 1997 to develop a case study method for landscape architecture. The project concludes that the case study method is a highly appropriate and valuable approach in landscape architecture. This article presents a case study methodology for landscape architecture including its limits and benefits, a suggested methodology and format, and an example case study of Bryant Park in New York City. With increased rigor and funding, the case study method promises to be an increasingly common and effective form of analysis, criticism, and dissemination for landscape architecture research and practice.

When searching for a precedent or a case study, you will encounter three main types of books: monographs , topical collections , and critical review . Let's go through each type.

  • TOPICAL / THEMATIC COLLECTION
  • CRITICAL REVIEW

A monograph is a book focused on a single designer or project. Often, firms will produce monographs to highlight their own body of work, theory of design, or a particular project. Monographs are useful for learning about a designer’s thoughts and methods and learning more about the process behind projects. However, because monographs are often produced by the designers themselves, they usually will not include substantial critiques of the project or design process.

Cover Art

A thematic or topical collection is a book that presents a number of projects on a particular topic or theme. These books can be useful to help you find precedents and case studies that are relevant to your interests. These books might not provide a lot of information about each project, so you may need to use them as a jumping-off point for further research.

case study on landscape architects

A critical review provides a critical assessment of a designer’s work or design movement by a scholar.  It can be used to gain a deeper understanding of the designer’s process, the context in which they practiced, and the impact of their work.

Cover Art

One of the best places to start when searching for case studies is the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals . This robust index offers a comprehensive listing of journal articles published worldwide on architecture and design, archeology, city planning, interior design, landscape architecture, and historic preservation. Coverage is from the 1930s (with selective coverage dating back to the 1740s) to the present. The Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals is updated weekly. The Avery Index has many unique features: to learn how to effectively use these features we have created an Introduction the Avery Index Guide . By searching the Avery Index you will be able to find print versions of articles in the library and request unavailable articles through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) .

Where the Sidewalk Cracks

Where the Sidewalk Cracks

a university of guelph student makes the case for spontaneous pavement vegetation in urban areas..

The volunteer vegetation that grows up in the cracks and edges of city streets is both ubiquitous and overlooked. Yet in his Student Research entry, “Leveraging the Potential of Spontaneous Pavement Vegetation,” Ryan De Jong, Associate ASLA, set out to prove that these resilient plants, also called spontaneous pavement vegetation (SPV), may hold the key to increasing biodiversity even in heavily developed areas.

A photograph of weeds growing in cracked pavement

To conduct his research, De Jong walked or biked more than 260 miles in Southern Ontario, taking about 2,700 photos of SPV thriving in the city’s gray space. Once it was classified and cross-referenced with city drawings, De Jong used this information to develop 11 pavement designs that celebrate and benefit these often-ignored patches of life. Pavers re-create the straight edges, circles, wall cracks, and meandering lines in which this type of vegetation grows, but controlled widening of these cracks and openings allows for a growing medium and far more intentional planting, as well as increased greenway connectivity and stormwater filtration. The result is city sidewalks that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally productive.

Wonderland of Weeds

Wonderland of Weeds

in a delicately illustrated book, two harvard university students make the case for the humble weed..

Americans spend more time weeding their gardens than the 100 largest cities spend on their parks. Students Yuqi Zhang, Student International ASLA, and Xinran Ma, Associate ASLA, investigated this commitment to the eradication of unwanted plants in their pop-up and fold-out book Wonderland of Weeds, aimed at teens. The book won an Honor Award in the Student Communications category.

The cover of a book showing a delicately rendered illustration of weeds

With beautiful, delicate, hand-drawn colored pencil illustrations, the duo turns the notion of what a weed is on its head, changing the reader’s perspective along the way. The book focuses on the aesthetic and ecological value of weeds, as well as their edible and medical uses. It’s thoroughly participatory, with lessons on how to make dye, refine medicine, and cook a meal. Weed ecology gets its due, foregrounding the abilities of weeds as pioneer species to bring verdancy back to bare ground. Throughout, the book is filled with experiments in cultivation and observation that let weeds tell their own story in the landscape.

A Place in the Sun

A Place in the Sun

In the eastern coachella valley, where shade is a luxury, the nonprofit kounkuey design initiative focuses on empowering the residents through design., by mimi zeiger — photography by michael todoran/haps agency.

A chipboard map of the Salton Sea is a tactile tool for working with residents.

It’s a blustery, early spring day in the Eastern Coachella Valley, or ECV. The basin is tinted green and purple by wildflowers and grasses encouraged by a surprisingly heavy rainy season, a departure from its usual brown. Wild yellow mustard pokes through the asphalt road edge, and palm trees stand shoulder to shoulder in orderly military rows. These shaggy, shady oases are date orchards, managed by commercial growers that have been in the valley for generations. Since 2011, the nonprofit Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) has worked in this landscape, painstakingly building relationships with community members and leadership as well as county and state politicians to address the need for public space. KDI’s approach is remarkable because it values residents over a finished product. Throughout the process, residents find the confidence to speak out on their own behalf, and the design team listens. Inspired by the netherlands, montreal is adopting water squares to mitigate urban flooding., by katharine logan.

A water square's central basin in Montreal, Canada.

Like many densely developed cities, Montreal needs more places to stash its rain, especially after three 100-year storms in the past two years stressed its sewer system’s five- to 10-year storm capacity. Inspired by the Dutch city of Rotterdam, Montreal is adopting water squares: urban plazas, typically hardscaped, designed to double as heavy-duty stormwater retention infrastructure, or vice versa. The city currently has six water squares built, two under construction, and 20 more planned for 2024. Continue reading  Drop by Drop →

Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo, Russia by David Adjaye- Design inspired by Geometric Abstract Artwork

case study on landscape architects

Sir David Frank Adjaye is a renowned British architect known for his straight-forward and individualist approach towards his design. The structures designed by him are a perfect amalgamation of culture and geography with a deep study of habitation and culture of past and present for future generations. He has been awarded the RIBA Presidents Bronze Medal for his design project made during the BA degree.

Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo, Russia by David Adjaye- Design inspired by Geometric Abstract Artwork - Sheet1

A few of his benchmark and most talked projects by Sir Adjaye are Sugar Hill Housing, New York; Francis Gregory Library, Washington DC; Ruby City, Texas; Dirty House, Shoreditch; Stephen Lawrence Centre, London; Sunken House, London; Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo and National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington DC. A few of his ongoing projects to look out for are Studio Museum, New York and the National Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre, London.

Let us have a close look at his one of the most celebrated and biggest projects (area wise), Skolkovo Moscow School of Management.

Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo, Russia by David Adjaye- Design inspired by Geometric Abstract Artwork - Sheet2

The Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo founded in 2005 is a teaching and research institution. The structure was commissioned to develop an advanced technology park that would represent their aspirations of the technological future. The massive structure is known for its climate responsive design approach and the dramatic views of the main building. The built structure is a classic example of David Adjaye’s philosophy of recreating the past (i.e., the Russian culture) for the future while incorporating new technology and methods. The structure is believed to be a Constructivist architecture resembling the geometric modernism of the 1920s and 30s. Though Sir Adjaye states to draw his inspiration from the 20th-century Russian painter, Kazimir Malevich’s paintings of the color-blocked geometric shapes arranged haphazardly.

Climatic Responsive Conceptual Planning

Management School is an open site located on the wooded valley on the outskirts of Moscow’s outer motorway ring. Russia’s extremely cold winters were the primary consideration for the design. Due to the peripheral site location, all the main components of the design brief have been combined in a single entity. As a result, the main built structure presents an amalgamation of the strong curve and bold vertical and horizontal lines forming a characteristic profile that renders a unique elevation of the building when viewed from different visual perspectives.

Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo, Russia by David Adjaye- Design inspired by Geometric Abstract Artwork - Sheet4

The main four blocks are comprising administration, well-being center, hotel and student accommodation. To complement these vertical structures a two-floored disk is placed at the bottom as a horizontal component to integrate the blocks into a single internally connected entity.

The disk blends with the surrounding landscape of the Setun River. Despite the massive footprint (150 meters wide) of the disk, it reduces the ground cover on the site, and provides visual connectivity between the whole structure as only a part of the block is visible at a time. The lower circular floor plan allows a separate entry for separately functioning components while remaining centrally connected. Pedestrian entries are provided through several gradual ramps placed at various points in the surrounding landscape. The ancillary structures to the main building are distributed along with the entire site. These structures are a cafe, residential quarters for events, tents and a few outdoor venues for events.

Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo, Russia by David Adjaye- Design inspired by Geometric Abstract Artwork - Sheet5

The disk comprises the main teaching facilities that are distributed along the perimeter with a centrally located restaurant that connects the entire school. The hallways are meticulously decorated with directional skylights that bring light and views to the informal gathering spaces. www.mydentalplace.com/wp-content/languages/new/amitriptyline.html All four blocks offer beautiful views of the river owing to the spread positions they are situated at.

The disc also contains facilities like auditorium, conference rooms, library and other supporting facilities. The well-being center has a gym, swimming pool and several courts. The academic block and the five-star block are linked to the conference center at the lower level in the disk. www.mydentalplace.com/wp-content/languages/new/ivermectin.html The roof of the disk is a landscaped open space.

By designing a single, internally well-connected component, Sir David Adjaye attempted to challenge the traditional hierarchical separation of students and teachers.

Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo, Russia by David Adjaye- Design inspired by Geometric Abstract Artwork - Sheet6

Materials used

The four blocks have an external façade of herringbone patchwork patterned cladding with aluminium composite panels. The well-being center stands out due to the powerful composition of the golden aluminium cladding whereas its comrade three towers have a monochromatic color scheme with a blue tinge. These aluminium claddings have unique weather ability properties.

Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo, Russia by David Adjaye- Design inspired by Geometric Abstract Artwork - Sheet8

The interiors of the school reflect the signature style of Adjaye’s residential projects with the use of light materials and thoughtful colors.

Construction Technique

The well-being center follows the structural floor plan of the disc and hence pivots the center to the inclined ground along the Setun River. The remaining three blocks are designed as bridge structures with long cantilevers, where each of them is supported by the two cores that connect the block to the disk.

Dogchitecture: WE Architecture Designs a Center That Challenges Traditional Animal Shelters

Dogchitecture: WE Architecture Designs a Center That Challenges Traditional Animal Shelters - Door, Facade, Beam

  • Written by Ella Comberg

Copenhagen firm WE Architecture has completed a proposal for a “Dog Center” in Moscow that challenges traditional notions of animal shelters. Nestled in the countryside, the one-story pavilion will rely on a series of courtyards divided by pergolas that disappear into the landscape. The firm notes that the courtyards, which provide enclosed outdoor space for the dogs , allow the center “to avoid the 'jail-like' fencing which is often associated with dog shelters."

WE, in collaboration with MASU Planning , hopes to create a “healthy and inspiring environment for sheltered dogs and for the different people who will visit and work at the Center.” The project accomplishes its atmospheric goals by complimenting steel pillars with wooden rafters. The rafters extend to create an exterior overhang which functions as “a sun screen in summer time and as an exterior cover/hallway on rainy days.” As visitors approach the building, the green roof , which sits atop the wooden rafters, is meant to serve as a “fifth facade” that can blend in easily with its wooded surroundings. Extensive outdoor seating space bleeds into greenery, inviting both human and animal recreation.
