Karnataka witnesses three types of climate. The state has dynamic and erratic weather that changes from place to place within its territory. Due to its varying geographic and physio-graphic conditions, Karnataka experiences climatic variations that range from arid to semi-arid in the plateau region, sub-humid to humid tropical in the Western Ghats and humid tropical monsoon in the coastal plains.

More than 75 per cent of the entire geographical area of Karnataka, including interior Karnataka, witnesses arid or semi-arid climate. Karnataka has about 15 per cent of the total semi-arid or 3 percent of the total arid areas marked in India.

Meteorological regions of Karnataka

Due to the climatic difference, Karnataka is divided into three meteorological regions:

• Coastal Karnataka: This region stretches over Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada. The entire coastal belt and the adjoining areas have tropical monsoons. The area receives heavy rainfall. The average annual rainfall in Coastal Karnataka is about 3456 mm, much more than the rainfall received in the other parts of the state.
• North Interior Karnataka: This region extends over Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bijapur, Bidar, Bellary, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Gulbarga, Koppal and Raichur. This area is an arid zone. North Interior Karnataka receives the least amount of rainfall in the state, and the average annual rainfall is just 731 mm.
• South Interior Karnataka: This region spreads over the districts of Bangalore Rural, Bangalore Urban, Chitradurga, Chamrajnagar, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Kolar, Mysore, Shimoga and Tumkur. This zone experiences a semi-arid type of climate. South Interior Karnataka receives an annual average of 1286 mm rainfall.

Seasons in Karnataka

Karnataka experiences the following four seasons in a year:

• Summer: The summer season starts from March and extends till May. April and May are the hottest months in Karnataka. During these two months the weather turns very dry and uncomfortable in the state.
• Monsoon: The monsoon season begins in June and lasts until September. During June humidity and temperature soars in the state. It is also the month when the southwest monsoon winds bring rainfall to the southern part of the state. From July to September, the heat reduces to an extent due to the rainfall, but the humidity stays high. The district of Udupi receives the highest average rainfall, while the districts of Chitradurga, Bijapur and Koppal receive the lowest average rainfall.
• Post-Monsoon: The post-monsoon season begins in October and continues until December. This period brings about a pleasant change in the weather. The state receives a few spells of rain associated with the north-eastern monsoon, which affects the south-eastern parts of Karnataka. The humidity reduces considerably during this period of the year.
• Winter: The winter season extends from January to February. These are the coldest months in most parts of Karnataka and the temperature dips low. The weather remains pleasant as the humidity reduces considerably.

Temperature in Karnataka

Karnataka experiences the lowest temperature during the month of January, and then the temperature gradually increases. The temperature begins to soar rapidly during the month of March. The southern parts of the state generally experience the highest temperature during the month of April while in the coastal plains the temperature reaches its maximum during the month of May. Post monsoon, during the months of October and November the temperature decreases in the state and comes down further during the month of December.

The average high temperature during summer is 34 degrees Celsius across the state. The average day temperature is 29 degrees Celsius in the monsoon season. During winter, temperatures range from 32 degrees Celsius to below 20 degrees Celsius.

Till date, the highest temperature recorded in Karnataka was 45.6 °C (114 °F) at Raichur on 23 rd May 1928. The lowest temperature recorded was 2.8 °C (37 °F) C at Bidar on 16 th December 1918.

BENGALURU, India (AP) — Bhavani Mani Muthuvel and her family of nine have around five 20-liter (5-gallon) buckets worth of water for the week for cooking, cleaning and household chores.

“From taking showers to using toilets and washing clothes, we are taking turns to do everything,” she said. It’s the only water they can afford.

A resident of Ambedkar Nagar, a low-income settlement in the shadows of the lavish headquarters of multiple global software companies in Bengaluru’s Whitefield neighborhood, Muthuvel is normally reliant on piped water, sourced from groundwater. But it’s drying up. She said it’s the worst water crisis she has experienced in her 40 years in the neighborhood.

City and state government authorities are trying to get the situation under control with emergency measures such as nationalizing water tankers and putting a cap on water costs. But water experts and many residents fear the worst is still to come in April and May when the summer sun is at its strongest.

The crisis was a long time coming, said Shashank Palur, a Bengaluru-based hydrologist with the think tank Water, Environment, Land and Livelihood Labs.

“Bengaluru is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and the infrastructure for fresh water supply is not able to keep up with a growing population,” he said.

Groundwater, relied on by over a third of the city’s 13 million residents, is fast running out. City authorities say 6,900 of the 13,900 borewells drilled in the city have run dry despite some being drilled to depths of 1,500 feet. Those reliant on groundwater, like Muthuvel, now have to depend on water tankers that pump from nearby villages.

Palur said El Nino , a natural phenomenon that affects weather patterns worldwide, along with the city receiving less rainfall in recent years mean “recharge of groundwater levels did not happen as expected.” A new piped water supply from the Cauvery River about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the city has also not been completed, adding to the crisis, he said.

Another concern is that paved surfaces cover nearly 90% of the city, preventing rainwater from seeping down and being stored in the ground, said T.V. Ramachandra, research scientist at the Centre for Ecological Sciences at Bengaluru-based Indian Institute of Science. The city lost nearly 70% of its green cover in the last 50 years, he said.

Ramachandra compared the city’s water shortage to the “day zero” water crisis in Cape Town, South Africa, 2018, when that city came dangerously close to turning off most taps because of a drought.

The Indian government estimated in 2018 that over 40% of Bengaluru residents won’t have access to drinking water by the end of the decade. Only those that receive piped water from rivers outside Bengaluru are still getting regular supply.

“Right now, everyone is drilling borewells in buffer zones of lakes. That is not the solution,” Ramachandra said.

He said the city should instead focus on replenishing the over 200 lakes spread across the city, stop new construction on lake areas, encourage rainwater harvesting and increase green cover across the city.

“Only if we do this will we solve the city’s water problem,” he said.

Palur added that identifying other sources and using them smartly, for example by reusing treated wastewater in the city “so that the demand for fresh water reduces,” could also help.

Until then, some residents are taking serious measures. S. Prasad, who lives with his wife and two children in a housing society made up of 230 apartments, said they have begun water rationing.

“Since last week we’ve closed the water supply to houses for eight hours every day, starting at 10 a.m. Residents have to either store water in containers or do everything they need to in the allotted time. We are also planning on installing water meters soon,” he said.

Prasad said their housing society, like many others in Bengaluru, is willing to pay high costs for water, but even then it’s hard to find suppliers.

“This water shortage is not only impacting our work but also our daily life,” Prasad said. “If it becomes even more dire, we’ll have no choice but to leave Bengaluru temporarily.”

A Gentleman in Moscow review: Utterly irresistible, the most gloriously entertaining show of the year finds Ewan McGregor in towering form

A gentleman in moscow review: a towering achievement in television, showtime's eight-episode adaptation of amor towles bestselling novel is one of the best shows of the year so far. it's available on prime video..

In Showtime’s A Gentleman in Moscow, Ewan McGregor plays Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, a charming aristocrat who is sentenced to life for the crime of being born into nobility. He is stripped of his titles, and summarily shipped off to spend the rest of his days at the grand Hotel Metropol in the middle of Moscow. The year is 1921; the Bolsheviks have just staged a successful revolution against the Tsarist regime, making people like Alexander enemies of the state. While other noblemen are lined up against a wall and shot, Alexander is allowed to live because of a cruel twist of fate: he once wrote a poem that was appropriated by the Communists. It’s like Bhagat Singh inadvertently inspiring the RSS with “Khayalon Ki Bijli.”

And so, as a 20-something who hasn’t worked a day in his life — “It is not the business of a gentleman to have an occupation,” he scoffs at the tribunal during his sentencing hearing — Alexander is stuffed into cramped servant’s quarters in the attic of the hotel, with the assurance that meals would be provided to him by the state on the condition that he doesn’t leave the Metropol’s premises. It’s a tough deal, but even though he never explicitly mentions it, it seems obvious that Alexander is grateful for not having been sent to a gulag instead. Based on the acclaimed 2016 novel by Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow is about as perfect as prestige TV dramas can get — a bittersweet, life-affirming tale of triumph in the face of insurmountable odds.

Alexander’s aristocratic background and general air of superiority don’t exactly make him an instantly appealing character, especially when he’s surrounded by members of the working class who’ve suddenly been elevated in the eyes of Mother Russia. But that’s where McGregor’s performance comes in. Broader complications of playing someone across several decades aside, McGregor instills in Alexander an unwavering dignity, a twinkling sincerity, and endless empathy for others. We do not learn about his aspirations, nor do we hear about the life that he had imagined for himself. That would be too cruel, and Alexander has already experienced unreasonable cruelty. A Gentleman in Moscow doesn’t let him wallow, although it allows him a bout of sadness when he needs it. Almost in an act of solidarity, the show incarcerates itself along with Alexander, barely leaving his side as he surrenders to the reality of his new life as a prisoner in the country he loves so dearly. In his entrapment, he finds emancipation.

To penetrate the protagonist’s mind with such clarity would be difficult for any show to accomplish, but it is especially admirable here, because Towles’ towering novel would make frequent detours into the inner landscape of its protagonist’s psyche. Creator Ben Vanstone and his team strike a fine balance between the cruel irony of Alexander’s predicament, and his ability to make the most of his surroundings — he lives in relative luxury, while the world outside witnesses upheaval. “It is the business of times to change, and of gentlemen to change with them,” he says in one scene, having embraced life’s eternal truth, that go on it must, come rain or new regime.

A natural charmer — Alexander is well-versed in virtually all matters under the sun, including gastronomy, literature, and, somewhat significantly, apples — he makes friends everywhere he goes. And before long, he begins to view the hotel’s staff — the receptionist Vasily, the head waiter Andre, the barman Audrius, the seamstress Marina, and the chef Emile — as his family. Over time, they become equals, a transformation that the show symbolically communicates in a scene where thousands of wine bottles in the hotel’s cellar have their labels removed by the newly empowered proletariat. In the eyes of an aesthete like Alexander, it is an act of vandalism akin to Tchaikovsky being performed on a Casio keyboard.

But it is only when he befriends an unsupervised little girl named Nina — a long term resident of the hotel like himself — that Alexander truly evolves as a person. And in episode three — every episode functions as a self-contained story in itself — Alexander enters into a romance with a silent film star named Anna Urbanova, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead . What begins as a brief fling turns into an epic love story, as Anna and Alexander’ re-encounter each other across several years. We never follow Ana outside the Metropol’s four walls, but like every supporting character in the show — a glowering ‘villain’ named Osip gets perhaps the most resounding arc — she emerges as a fully fleshed-out person by the time Alexander is ready to make more active choices, following a lifetime of passively adjusting to whatever googly was hurled at him.

A Gentleman in Moscow is unflinching in its affection for its hero, rarely making the mistake to suggest that he is in any way at peace. Alexander might have adapted to his surroundings, but crucially, he hasn’t become acclimatised to them. Artfully filmed flashbacks project him as a more complicated man than we’d been led to believe, and McGregor grabs every opportunity that he gets to milk his melancholia. The world, as Alexander learns quite literally, waits for no man. On the outside, Hitler’s forces make inroads across Europe ; some years later, they are defeated. A few decades into his imprisonment, Stalin dies. But Alexander’s existence revolves not around the whims of the universe or the petty politics of man, but around his found family, which, in episode four, grows in more magnificent ways than he could ever have imagined.

This is, ultimately, a story about repression — a repression of emotions, of culture, of expression. Alexander experiences tremendous injustices, but he channels whatever resentment that he might hold in his heart by opening it up to others. This might sound like high praise, but watching A Gentleman in Moscow isn’t unlike watching The Shawshank Redemption for the first time. It’s the kind of show that can, with a well-placed wail of a cello, or a perfectly timed close-up, sweep you off your feet with its unique blend of old world charm, soaring romance, and immersive thrills.

Phil Wiggins, Virtuoso of the Blues Harmonica, Dies at 69

First as half of the duo Cephas and Wiggins and later on his own, he was one of the best-known musicians playing the style known as the Piedmont blues.

Phil Wiggins, a harmonica player of such range that he could make his instrument sound like a clarinet one minute, an accordion the next and then an entire percussion section — all in the service of the complex melodies and steady rhythms of the style known as the Piedmont blues — died on May 7 at his home in Takoma Park, Md. He was 69.

His daughter Martha Wiggins said the cause was cancer.

For much of his career, Mr. Wiggins was best known as half of the duo Cephas and Wiggins, in which he performed and recorded with the guitarist and singer John Cephas. The two were considered one of the country’s top Piedmont blues acts, and they toured regularly at home and abroad for over 30 years, until Mr. Cephas’s death in 2009 .

The Piedmont blues is distinct from its Delta and Chicago cousins in its relaxed yet complicated melodies and its insistent rhythms. Its influences include gospel, Appalachian folk and early country music.

Mr. Cephas played his instrument with the sophisticated fingerpicking typical of Piedmont blues. Mr. Wiggins would wrap all manner of counterpoints around it, then burst out in a solo that could be aggressive or restrained, tight or relaxed.

“The harmonica works the same way as your voice,” he told Blues Blast magazine in 2021 . “You have an idea in your mind that you want to express, and it just comes out, the same way speaking happens. In a lot of ways, it still feels that intuitive to me, except that, for me, the harmonica works better than my voice!”

Phillip Theodore Wiggins was born on May 8, 1954, in Washington, the son of George Wiggins, a cartographer with the Interior Department, and Vicci (Carter) Wiggins, who managed the home. His father died when Phil was 7, and his mother later married Elliott Johnson, an Army officer.

Phil’s family had a well-stocked collection of records at home, which provided the first courses of his musical education. He had to buy his own instruments, he later said, and with a small income from a newspaper route, the only thing he could afford was a plastic harmonica.

While in high school he began hanging out with Black musicians in Washington, many of them newly arrived in the city from across the South. They would gather on weekends in homes and barber shops, playing a range of music that reflected the diverse origins of the Great Migration.

He became especially close to a partly blind street singer named Flora Molton, and through her he met a who’s who of accomplished East Coast blues musicians. While still in high school, he joined her onstage at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, then later joined a band led by another esteemed blues artist, the pianist and singer Big Chief Ellis.

Mr. Cephas, 24 years older than Mr. Wiggins, joined Mr. Ellis’s band in 1975, and two years later he and Mr. Wiggins set off on their own as Cephas and Wiggins.

Within a few years they had caught the attention of L+R, a German record label that specialized in jazz and blues. The label released their first two albums and, more important, brought them to Europe to tour blues festivals there.

The duo later traveled the world at the behest of the State Department and the Kennedy Center; they made one appearance at a folk festival in Moscow in 1988, before the fall of the Soviet Union. They recorded 12 albums and won 11 W.C. Handy Awards, considered the blues equivalent of the Grammy.

Mr. Wiggins’s marriage to Wendy Chick ended in divorce. Along with his daughter Martha, he is survived by his partner, Judy LaPrade; another daughter, Eliza Wiggins; four brothers, Skip, Charles, William and Elliott; a sister, Rabiyah Khaliq; and two grandsons.

Despite his reputation as a ferocious virtuoso, Mr. Wiggins offstage was humble and eager to share his craft. He taught blues workshops around the country and helped establish the blues program at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, W.Va., an organization that promotes traditional arts and crafts. He was a regular instructor at its summer workshops.

“Phil was a deep and thoughtful musician,” Emily Miller, the center’s artistic director, wrote on Facebook. “He wrote bold, essential songs and performed them alongside traditional gems that he polished to just the right gritty perfection.”

After Mr. Cephas died, Mr. Wiggins played with a number of other guitarists, as well as with his own string band, the Chesapeake Sheiks. In 2017, he received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

He continued to play harmonica, but he also sang, something he rarely did when working with Mr. Cephas.

“The main thing about singing is telling a story,” he told Country Blues magazine in 2014 . “When I do that, things work out for me.”
