If you want to be smart, hang out with smart people. That’s why TED is a great site. Watch videos by some of the innovative people on the planet. Many videos have a transcript, a handy tool for ESL students who want to improve their listening skills.

Who doesn’t like free books? And free audio books? Download both at the Gutenberg Project. There are 33,000 titles plus links to another 10,000 titles.

There are lots of online dictionaries. This one is an enormous reference library at your fingertips. The Britannica Video Library has an awesome collection of short videos on subjects ranging from history to travel.

Improve Your Writing Skills: 8 Writing Strategies for ESL Students

You’re asked to write an English essay, and you’re in panic mode. You find yourself second-guessing every sentence you write; before you know it, it’s time to submit the essay.

Have you ever experienced this? After reading this article, we hope you aren’t in such a situation.

As someone who isn’t a native English speaker, we understand how unnerving essays, dissertations, research papers , and other assignments might be.

In this article, we outline eight useful writing strategies to help ESL students like you improve their writing.

8 Writing Strategies for ESL Students to Write Better

For ESL students, it can be difficult to find the right words or phrases to articulate or follow grammar and sentence formation rules while writing essays. Here are eight writing strategies to improve your writing skills.

Read multiple times

Reading books, novels, articles, biographies, or any other reading material helps enhance your vocabulary, familiarize yourself with metaphors, idioms, or even sentence structure, and guides you into constructing complex phrases.

Read everything in English that you can find -- form the words, and narrate them out slowly and coherently.

Pick out words from the text that you are not familiar with and write them down. You can continue finding the meaning of these words online or in dictionaries for better understanding.

You can also underline or highlight phrases or sentences that are confusing so that later you can ask your professors about what they meant.

In short: the more you read in English, the better you’ll be able to understand and write in English.

Use sentence frames

Your professor gives you a writing assignment, but it can be intimidating to write without any help. Use sentence frames to make the writing task more manageable. A sentence frame is a pre-written sentence with spaces in it for you to fill in the remaining words to complete it.

Using sentence frames can help in figuring out the correct structure and the flow of the English language, and can help you in easing the pressure of not trying to come up with your own sentences.

If you are unsure about what word to use, you can write the word down in your native language and continue with the rest of the sentences that you can fill in without any difficulties. After you finish, you can come back to the words that you don't know and try to find alternatives to make sense of the sentence given.

Work towards writing in the language you already know while also gaining the experience of using proper grammar and practicing writing in sentence frames until you are confident and comfortable in writing similar sentences independently.

You can find sentence frame structures for multiple writing tasks such as compare and contrast, persuasive, narrative , sequence, and many other forms of writing.

Organize your thoughts graphically

Graphic organizers are a very beneficial writing strategy for ESL students to help them learn how to read and write better in English. Using this method can help you learn how to organize your thoughts, points, or even sentences systematically with the use of different kinds of graphics.

These organizers can be used for every stage of the writing process -- from brainstorming, pre-writing, and drafting to revision.

Graphic organizing writing tools such as Word Clusters or Topic Wheels can be handy for brainstorming your thoughts and finding purposeful meanings every time you get stuck on a word or phrase.

Here’s what the word clustering method looks like.

You can also use Story Maps if you need guidance to learn how to write a story on your own.

Use templates instead of blank sheets of paper to note down points, and answers, and fill in sentences. You can use these templates to model your writing method and use it as a reference.

Use the Four Square Writing Method

The Four Square Writing Method is a tried and tested writing and organizing strategy that teaches students better structure and helps them write cohesively. Through this strategy, you can also learn how to properly organize a paragraph.

In this method, a blank square is divided into four quadrants. In the center, you make a smaller square and write your topic sentence. Fill in your opening statements and support in the first quadrant, and write down any important points and supporting facts that relate to the topic sentence in the other two quadrants. Leave the 4th quadrant for writing your closing statements.

This visual method will help you focus on writing, provide details and enhance your vocabulary. This will also help you conceptualize, understand and structure a piece of writing without difficulties.

Keep sentences simple and short

A sign of good writing is crisp, short, and easy-to-understand sentences. Some people use complex words because they think they sound more academic, but that is far from the truth.

Using complicated, formal words and unnecessarily long sentences will only make your readers get confused and bored with your writing. They will probably lose track of what you’re trying to convey. So instead, cut short your sentences, use terms related to your topic, include transition words correctly, and keep the language simple.

When editing your work, look out for long sentences and try to divide them into two separate sentences. This will allow you to break down what you want to say in manageable chunks of words.

As an ESL student, you might not be confident about using English words, and this might make you stick to one particular sentence structure, but try to vary your sentence length based on the purpose of what you want to say.

Practice writing

Practice makes you perfect, and what better way to enhance your English writing skills than just writing whatever you want on a blank piece of paper?

Every time you take notes, try to understand a novel, write an email, or even a text message, practice it in writing first to improve your English writing skills. Allot a period in your daily schedule to sit and write.

You can also practice by writing a paragraph about the day that you have had, some exciting experiences, your fears, goals, likes, dislikes, or literally anything else to increase your speed and dexterity of writing in English.

Use online tools

If you want to be clear and make it easy for your readers to understand what you want to convey in English, it is very important to know the grammatical rules because using the wrong verb tense or writing a sentence in the wrong order will make your readers confused.

That's why you can find multiple websites and online tools that can help you write better in a different language, such as:

Grammarly (one of the sleekest tools for checking grammar);

Keep a journal

This creates an opportunity to write as much as you want in English and, if needed, words in your native language to understand the meaning behind the English words you’ve used.

When you are and feel skilled enough to read, write and speak fluent English, you can go back to your journals and re-read your notes. This will show you the progress you’ve made and can help you feel more confident.

It is okay to make mistakes in your journals because as you keep practicing how to write, you will only get better and faster and gain momentum and fluency in your English language skills. So, go ahead, and challenge yourself.

New jobs are added frequently so consider subscribing again, even if you have in the past.

Out of all the ESL teaching job websites, ESL Cafe stands a cut above the rest. Not in terms of usability, although it’s a lot better since a recent site overhaul, but just in terms of sheer numbers of jobs. They are divided up into China, Korea, and international ones and this should certainly be your first stop when starting a job search.

Along with ESL Cafe, TEFL.com is a go-to resource for job seekers. It’s been around for years and certainly has a good base of schools that advertise there. It’s less focused on China and Korea than ESL Cafe and can be a good place to find jobs off the beaten track like Puerto Rico, Sweden , or Finland .

I generally don’t recommend recruiters to find ESL teaching jobs with only one exception, Teach Away. They are super-s0lid, totally above board and filter out all the crappy jobs that you don’t want anyway. If you’re a certified teacher in your home country, Teach Away should also be able to land a solid job in a public school or international school.

The Jet Program

One of the most interesting options for ESL teaching jobs in Japan is the Jet Program. Basically, it places native English speakers in public schools throughout Japan, with the focus on it being a language and cultural exchange. The pay is quite good too but it’s very competitive to get this job. It’s one of the only ways to get teaching English in Okinawa jobs .

EF English First

English First is one of the biggest employers when it comes to ESL teaching around the world. They are currently hiring for China, Indonesia and Russa and one of the best things about this company is that it’s often possible to advance into management or transfer.

This is another big company that has branches in various countries around the world. Hess has locations in South Korea, Vietnam , China, Singapore and Taiwan . Currently, Taiwan has the most available jobs.

Korean university jobs are some of the most coveted ones in the ESL teaching world. Who doesn’t like 5 months of paid vacation and lucrative overtime opportunities, right? Your first stop for all the information you need to know about how to get this job and what to do once you have it is My Life! Teaching in a Korean University, run by a vet of 10 years teaching in Korean unis.

Waygook.org

If you’re teaching in South Korea, or are considering heading there, head over to Waygook. The forums are filled with helpful people ready to answer just about any question you might have. And, if you’re teaching in a public school and need some lesson planning resources? They’re very well-known for that as well.

Go Overseas

If you’re looking for specific information about teaching in a certain country, Go Overseas should be one of your first stops. They have this general information but also a ton of informative articles about certain jobs to consider, salaries, tips for living and more.

If you’re looking for all things teaching ESL in Japan, including jobs in an Eikaiwa , apartments, studying Japanese, forums, etc., then Gaijin Pot should be your first stop. It’s far and away the best site for English teachers in Japan.

If you’re looking for a forum to get all your questions answered about teaching English in Taiwan, Forumosa should be your first stop. It’s a very active site with lots of people willing to answer any and all questions bout teaching ESL in Taiwan.

International TEFL Academy

I don’t love to recommend websites that sell TEFL courses with one exception, International TEFL Academy. They have a ton of great information about various countries to consider teaching in, particularly the Middle East. There isn’t a ton of information about this but this website is one of the best.

Transitions Abroad

A nice source for general information about teaching ESL in a certain county is Transitions Abroad. Plus, they have jobs, detailed country guides, and specific information like how to travel around a certain place.

Best Websites for ESL Students

Using english.

If I’m going to recommend a single, general resource to my students for practicing their English skills, it’s Using English. This website is designed for ESL students specifically and has idioms, English grammar, quizzes, vocabulary and all the other things in abundance.

ESL Games World

One of the best sources for all things kids practicing English online is ESL Games World. There are a ton of interactive and engaging ESL games for kids here along with lots of things teachers can use like PowerPoint and printable games.

Business English Pod

If you have students who are serious about business English, then you’ll definitely want to recommend Business English Pod to them. It’s a paid site but there is also a lot of free resources to check out. Teachers can use it too when teaching business English! It’s my go-to source for this kind of class.

Learn English Kids

The British Council certainly does some great work when it comes to websites for English learners. Learn English Kids has a ton of resources that are interactive and fun. I always like to recommend it to parents and kids who want to get some extra practice for English when not in my class!

Learn English

This is the adult version from the British Council of their kids’ site. It has a ton of excellent resources for learning English and you could literally spend a lifetime cruising around this site, learning new things! This is also the source for all things technical ESL teaching, including examples of discourse .

Fortunately, there’s no shortage of ESL resources online. But how do you know what works?

In this post, I’ve collected 12 helpful websites for both teachers and students alike, to capture the attention of struggling students and—at the same time—challenge your top students.

From lesson plans to worksheets, there’s a resource here for everyone to make teaching and learning English much easier!

Ellii is one of the most comprehensive ESL teaching resources available. While it does require membership (the cheapest currently being $12 per month), many ESL teachers find this site incredibly helpful.

Membership to the site allows you full access to their lesson plan library, which has more than 500 ready-made lesson plans and more than 2,000 ready-to-print images and flashcards.

The site also takes current events and creates diverse lesson plans . The topics are very current and the lessons are sure to get your students talking !

The site also has a breakdown of lessons by topic, such as business in English, role plays, writing in English, holidays , grammar stories and more.

FluentU is a language learning program with a curated library of authentic English videos, that your students can watch with interactive dual-language subtitles. They can review what they’ve learned using multimedia flashcards and personalized quizzes, helping them to retain new vocabulary.

As their teacher, you are able to assign them specific videos and flashcards, and you are also easily able to keep track of their progress and activity.

You can also browse the FluentU blogs for English teachers and learners to gather tons of lesson ideas. You will find additional blogs focused on standardized English tests and business English for the more developed learner.

Best for: Beginner and intermediate learners

ESLprintables.com is a great website for teachers who have also already made a lot of their own curriculum. It’s a resource with hundreds of thousands of ready-made worksheets, PowerPoint presentations and online exercises. The caveat here is that you must submit contributions before you can download them.

Worksheet downloads are conveniently organized by grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing worksheets. In addition, they offer cinema, television, games and song worksheets.

The site also has a forum for teachers, where ESL instructors can ask questions, get advice and share ideas.

I have often used LanternFish for young ESL learners, but it’s also a valuable site for teenage and adult learners. With hundreds of worksheets and lesson plans, it’s a helpful resource with lots of great ideas to better engage your students.

LanternFish offers flashcards, ESL exercises specifically for adults, a writer’s workshop and fun worksheet activities like word searches and crosswords for your students.

The site has a large listing of creative writing prompts, which can be really fun for more advanced students.

Building vocabulary through flashcards and exercises is one of this site’s major strengths. They have a collection of games and vocabulary exercises on a variety of themes from beginner to intermediate students.

BusyTeacher.org is one of the best sites on the web for ESL teachers. It has thousands of worksheets and activities available immediately for free download. No signing up, no membership and no fees (though you can purchase their entire library for about $100).

One especially helpful offering is their 360 free “ warmers and fillers ” which include warm-up activities and ice-breakers to get your students engaged quickly from the start of your lesson.

One of their warmers is the “How Was Your Weekend” activity. The idea here is to give the students the identity of a famous person on a slip of paper (or let them think of their own). In pairs, the students ask questions and try to guess one another’s identity based on what they did over the weekend.

The site also offers great advice for ESL teachers, interesting creative writing prompts and much more.

Best for: Grades K-12

Colorín Colorado is an exceptional website offering a wide array of material for students, teachers and families. The material available from the site is great for grades K-12, and is especially geared toward native Spanish-speaking ELLs.

This website also contains a very informative educators’ page discussing all things ELL, beneficial for new to veteran English teachers.

You can dive into this website and find a variety of ESL resources for teachers covering multiple aspects of language skills your students need to grow. It offers videos, research-based articles, newsletters, books, toolkits and many more essentials that will benefit you and your students.

Colorín Colorado has won several awards and is a must for English learners and their teachers.

Best for: Preschool to 2nd or 3rd grade

Reading Is Fundamental is an exceptional ELL website focusing on reading. RIF is part of a literacy movement in which literacy for all children is paramount. Their focus and aim is for every child to enjoy, benefit and implement reading into their everyday lives.

You and your students can benefit from RIF’s interactive resources, whether you implement the material into your lesson plan or use the website directly as a classroom activity.

The Litracy Central page contains printable exercises and reading activity calendars your class can follow.

Using English (UE) offers relevant information that will benefit you and your students of all ages. UE is an easy-to-navigate site with several categories for teachers and students alike.

It offers tests , quizzes, forums , English references, articles , tools and extensive material you can utilize.

This website boasts over 800 free downloadable and printable lesson plans and worksheets ranging from dialogue exercises to tests.

This online listening lab is the perfect resource for listening exercises.

The audio listening exercises are organized by level of difficulty (easy, medium, difficult) and are listed by topic. Topic examples include “Clothing Styles,” “Car Rental,” “Breakfast Recipes” and “Friday Night Mishaps.”

Each lesson includes a short audio clip (usually less than two minutes), a quiz, vocabulary activities, post-listening exercises and online investigations, which ask the student to research the topic further online.

The site also has 20-minute ESL vocabulary lessons and longer videos that feature more in-depth interviews and conversations, perfect for your more advanced students.

Best for: Preschool and kindergarten students

Starfall is another great ELL website with interactive language aspects that will keep your students enthused while offering up new material for your lesson plans. This site is perfect for preschool through kindergarten students.

It focuses on interactive lessons, pronunciation activities, numbers, vocabulary and pictures. Coupling fun activities with academic material is the cornerstone of effective ESL education, and Starfall accomplishes just that.

The site has excellent ELL resources for educators as well as parents . There is a strong emphasis on reading and your students can really get their fill of exceptional material from this site with the step-by-step process and sing-along material .

Best for: Beginner learners

Read Today offers excellent resources for students, educators and families of ELLs.

The Play and Learn page contains an excellent array of exercises—including writing, spelling, counting and puzzles.

Students can practice their expertise in shapes, uppercase, lowercase, word matching, spelling and so much more in interactive activities.

Read Today also has workbooks you can purchase, which will help with learning new material in a fun way.

Best for: Grades 5-8

This ELL website was established by the National Institute of Environmental Health Services (NIH) in an effort to combine learning with informative information about health, ecology, the environment, science and other important issues.

NIH Kids’ Pages has a lot of material that is perfect for students from grades 5 to 8. It conveys relatable issues and information in a way that’s easy to understand.

NIH Kids’ Pages gives access to videos, key vocabulary , readings and many more interactive and enticing resources to help students learn.

The site also has a Lesson Plans & Activities page with an assortment of printable material perfect for any ELL classroom. The printable content covers booklets, fact sheets, interviews, flyers, lesson plans, presentations and a whole lot more.

The 10 Best Websites for English Teachers

As a high school English teacher, I’m always using outside websites and resources. After all, if it helps my students and gets them excited about English, then I’m happy to try it. These are my best websites for English teachers. I’d love to hear your picks in the comments section. We’ll update this as more ideas for best websites for English teachers roll in!

1. Teaching Tolerance

Teaching Tolerance is “a place where educators who care about diversity, equity and justice can find news, suggestions, conversation and support.” This is my go-to spot any time I want to make my teaching more socially aware. It is filled with well-crafted commentary about teaching social justice, resources for teachers, and inspiration to fight the good fight. See what I have written for them here .

2. Goodreads

With the slogan “Meet your next favorite book,” Goodreads is a bit of technological wonder for readers. Organize shelves of books you have read, and rate them for your friends to check out. Write reviews, share favorite quotes or my favorite: have the site generate recommendations for you based on things you have liked in the past. Great place to send kids in need of a good book.

3. Turnitin

So much more than just a place to catch cheaters, although it is very good at that. When students submit papers via Turnitin, those papers are tested against the internet as well as peer submissions past and present. Beyond that, it offers all sorts of revision tools to help improve student writing.

4. Purdue OWL

Whether your students need clarification on grammar, style or proper citations, this site can help. With printable and online practice and teacher resources, the OWL does an admirable job of fulfilling its goal of assisting students “in their development as writers—no matter what their skill level.”

5. UNC Writing Center

Handouts for virtually every writing issue your students could come across. Videos too! This site offers easily accessible lists for when a student struggles with a particular skill. Just pull up this page and click away.

6. NoRedInk

Let’s be honest: None of us really loves teaching grammar. In most classrooms, there are huge differences in what students have already mastered and what they still need to learn. Enter NoRedInk. Here students get individualized instruction and practice with very little time and effort from teachers. The site does all the hard work for you.

7. Kahoot

I just started using this one, and it is awesome. I guess that is why their slogan is “Making Learning Awesome.” Using Kahoot, it is simple to “create, play and share fun learning games for any subject, for all ages, for free!” You make up questions, or find a game that already exists, and students answer using their cellphones. With leaderboards and podium finishes, students are totally engaged in what used to be boring reviews.

8. Educreations

This may be my favorite site for teaching students how to write and revise. Using my iPad, I am able to narrate over and annotate a piece of sample writing, explaining the revision process. For better understanding of how this one works, check out one I use for teaching introductions here .

9. Blogger

“Publish your passions, your way.” I have used Blogger for years as the home of both my class and personal blogs. Easy to set up. Easy to post. It allows you to create a place where you can disseminate content to students, engage them in conversation outside of class hours and supplement classroom instruction.

10. CrashCourse

I admit I long for a bromance with John Green. Everything that guy writes is like kryptonite for a reluctant reader. Almost as good as his books are his CrashCourse videos. With remarkable animation to support witty and insightful overviews, his videos are a great asset in the classroom.

11. The Literacy Shed

This makes the list of best websites for English teachers for its collection of great visual content. Use it to find film, animation, photographs, and picture books that add to literary themes.

12. English Grammar Online

This website is focused on teaching English as a foreign language, but the free exercises, tests, vocab, and more could be useful in any classroom.
