It’s not always easy—but it is possible.

The secret is to leverage any professional-like experience (such as community or volunteer services) you've gained, plus your skills and academic accomplishments. Since you're likely applying for entry-level jobs , most recruiters won't expect a huge professional background but will look for a good set of skills and strengths .

In this article, we'll cover how to write a high school student resume, and provide practical tips and examples of what to write in each section. Plus, you'll get two templates that you can easily adapt to make your own.

Why is a high school resume important?

A well-crafted high school resume can set the stage for your future career experiences. Even if you have no formal work experience, recruiters still want to see your skills, education, and potential certifications laid out on paper.

Writing a resume also helps you organize your achievements, identify your strengths, and lessons you learned from past experiences, such as extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and AP courses.

Though your resume might be short—which is normal for a high schooler—a thoughtful and tailored presentation can make your application stand out. How to write a high school student resume in 6 steps

Resumes are all about presenting your qualifications strategically and authentically to grab the recruiter's attention and land an interview . Here's how to write one as a high school student:

1. Start with your contact information

Needles to say, your resume should have your contact information so the recruiter can identify it and contact you to schedule an interview. It's the first section of the resume and should be placed at the top of the page.

Follow this structure:

2. Write a resume summary or objective

A resume summary is a short statement that highlights your top skills, qualifications, and aspirations for a specific job in two to three sentences. This section is placed right below your contact information.

Though it's optional, a resume summary helps showcase who you are—especially if you don't have much work experience and would benefit from highlighting skills and positive traits. It should be brief and to the point.

Similarly, the objective statement also has two to three sentences in which you highlight your qualifications and directly state your interest in that position and why. Though it's considered outdated, an objective statement is still welcomed by some recruiters if it is well-crafted.

“Driven high school student with a passion for software development and a proven track record in coding and robotics competitions. Skilled in HTML, Java, and C with certifications in data analysis and project management.”

“Ambitious high school student with strong communication skills and proven leadership skills in extracurricular activities. Skilled in advanced Excel, Figma, and fluent Spanish.”

High school student resume objective example:

“Detail-oriented high school student with a passion for design and proven experience creating visual content for social media platforms. Seeking opportunities to leverage design skills in a dynamic internship setting.”

3. List your education

This section should be the first thing the hiring manager sees after the summary because “it shows them what you’re looking for—an internship , a part-time job , or a full-time job—after graduation,” says career coach and speaker Anne Ryan .

Here, you should add your current or completed academic background. Ryan also says that if you are dual-enrolled in a college program (especially ones where you may receive an associate degree as well as your high school diploma), you might want to add that in this section as well.

Adding your high school GPA can also be a good move. It'll help you stand out if your score is high—3.5 or above for high school students—and show hiring managers you did well in classes, showing commitment and effort.

Below high school, you could add some other extra classes you’ve taken that are relevant to the application, “but you may want to put AP classes and awards further down the page to direct more attention to your experience section,” Ryan says.

4. List your relevant experiences

Next section is the experience section . As a high school student, it's likely that you had few professional experiences in life, but there are multiple activities that can count as experience in this context. For example:

  • Extracurricular activities
  • Community service
  • Personal projects
  • Volunteer work
  • Programs or applications you manage
  • Academic clubs you’ve been part of
  • Part-time jobs
  • Internships

You don't need to include all of that in your resume. Instead, pick the experiences that are relevant for the job. For instance, if you're applying for a sales position, an experience in volunteer work where you've dealt with the public is more relevant than being the organizer of a book club.

The idea is to show hiring managers how you could fit a position based on what you did and achieved in all these experiences. These experiences should be listed in two to four bullet points , always highlighting key actions and potential accomplishments.

5. Create a skills section

The skills section demonstrates what abilities you have that makes you qualified for the job. You can add both hard skills (technical knowledge and the certifications you have to perform that job) and soft skills (the way you behave and interact with others when working).

Think about tasks or projects you've done in the past that required some of the skills you'll also use in the job you're applying for. For instance, organizing a charity event requires planning, teamwork, and leadership, which are valuable skills in any professional context.

Use keywords to match the job description

If you're applying for a job online , you'll come across descriptions that list tasks, skills, and essential information about the company, and keywords that appear repeatedly are likely important to recruiters.

Incorporating relevant keywords into your resume not only demonstrates alignment with the job but also helps applicant tracking systems (ATSs)—which recruiters use to filter candidates—select your resume.

However, don’t stuff your resume with keywords that don't make sense. Instead, pick out the ones that match your own experiences, certifications, and skills, and naturally add them in sections where it makes sense. For internships and entry-level jobs, you're not expected to meet every requirement, so be honest and strategic when selecting relevant keywords.

Use action verbs and quantifiers

As the name implies, action verbs are verbs that express an action that can be mental or physical. Basically, they describe and express something that you did or are currently doing. In resume writing, action verbs are a powerful way to express your involvement in an activity or project.

On the other hand, quantifiers are anything you can measure within your tasks and results that demonstrate the impact of your work, the scope it had, and the frequency of the activities. Together, action verbs and quantifiers are a great way to demonstrate your qualities and skills as a professional.

  • Worked for four months as a barista, serving more than 100 clients per evening
  • Participated in my school's green committee team and organized 10 activities during the school year
  • Developed and organized a book donation campaign for my local library and received 150+ donations

Choose a simple format for your resume

When it comes to formatting, keep your resume as simple as possible. A simple format makes your resume much easier to read and easily scannable for ATS. By simple formatting, we mean standard fonts, such as Arial or Times New Roman, and regular size, like 11 or 12.

Be consistent and stick to the chosen format throughout the entire resume. Avoid overly complex designs with colors, images, or fancy fonts that can hinder readability and ATS compatibility.

As former Google VP of People Operations Lazlo Bock said on LinkedIn, “unless you're applying for a job such as a designer or an artist, your focus should be on making your resume clean and legible.”

Finally, save your resume in Word and PDF and send in the format asked by the recruiter in the job listing. Although the standard is PDF, because it can't be edited and keeps the integrity of the file, some companies prefer Word.

Proofread, proofread, proofread

Always double check your resume to ensure there are no grammatical errors or typos. Instead of immediately sending it to a recruiter, review it a couple of minutes after writing and/or ask for a friend or family member to proofread it for you.

It’s that time of year. Leaves are falling. It’s time to pick out pumpkins. And oh yeah, your high schooler might be experiencing some anxiety about what comes after graduation. How can parents help ease that uncertainty?

Well, if your student is one of the thousands who has taken an aptitude assessment known as the ASVAB, this might be the perfect opportunity to use those results to spark a great conversation about what comes next.

What is the ASVAB?

The ASVAB is one part of the ASVAB Career Exploration Program. It provides key insights into your teen’s interests and abilities that can help your teen find the career path that’s right for them. While the program has historically only been offered in-person, the Post-Test Interpretation (PTI ) is now offered virtually so participants can access their results from anywhere. That’s good news for parents looking to help guide their high schooler toward postsecondary success.

What Does an ASVAB Score Show?

All PTI participants (whether in-person or virtual) receive an ASVAB score explanation, complete an interest inventory, discover potentially satisfying career fields , and explore all the ways to gain career field entry. Plus, they gain access to planning tools they can use to map out their post-secondary plans.

Unlike standardized tests that primarily measure math and language, the ASVAB CEP includes sections that assess electronics, science, and mechanical comprehension. It offers more options that might appeal to teens in their post-high school life, including military service, careers, and college. That’s why you’ll want to be sure your student knows how to get the most out of this tool.

How to Access ASVAB Results

“This year, we are holding virtual workshops for those who took the test last year but aren’t in school this year,” says ASVAB CEP Director Shannon Salyer. “We pride ourselves on the personal service we provide by walking through the test results and interest inventory to help identify a career blueprint that dovetails with teens’ skills and preferences.”

Parents can submit a request to schedule an in-person or virtual PTI for their school. Alternatively, parents and students can access a step-by-step walkthrough to complete the PTI workshop together on your own using the unique access code on the students’ results sheet to login at the ASVAB CEP website. Parents of students who have not taken the ASVAB can use access code: PARENT to create an account and view (and use) everything available in the Career Exploration Program.

In addition, the site has a host of other free resources that can help any student with their career planning, whether they are considering a two or four-year school, work-based learning, or the military.

When parents and teens have meaningful conversations about the options that may be a good fit, it can alleviate a lot of the stress surrounding “what’s next.” The ASVAB CEP results reveal aptitudes and allow students to filter potential careers, with accompanying educational materials offering guidance for parents to help their child find a track and build a plan.

“The workshop is so important to unlocking personalized career planning resources,” Salyer says, adding that for many it’s an ongoing process where teens and their families can revisit the tool as their experiences change and they gather more information. “As you evaluate the parts of a job you like, you can fine-tune your options to hone in on the aspects you prefer.”

How to Use the Information

“The interpretation is a really helpful tool to know what the scores mean. It’s not just showing an aptitude for a given path. It helps kids determine what types of jobs might be appealing and how that intertwines with their interests,” says Jason Downey, a guidance counselor at Beachwood High School in Ohio. “In other words, a high math score doesn’t just tell you you’re good at math. It will also break down potential opportunities for military, civilian, or college life that make the most sense.”

Downey recommends the ASVAB CEP to all his students, even if they are not interested in the military. For example, he says trades are making a strong comeback, and the great news is there is a high demand for workers to start in paid internships or apprenticeships. “I routinely see kids get job offers for great pay in programs like welding and other hands-on skills even before they finish their training.”

The ability to revisit the resources for two years is particularly useful, Downey says. In fact, he’s had students who started a career or college who eventually enlist, either because they found college wasn’t for them, or they realized that training for the careers in which they were interested was more affordable through the military.

Many families are delighted to learn about a number of options that allow kids to pursue college or a career path without incurring debt. ROTC, for example, is offered on many college campuses as a paid college education with a guaranteed post-college career.

Maybe you are in high school and don’t feel that college is right you, or perhaps you never graduated from high school and are looking to break out of your current situation. Or you may be a young adult who feels stuck and needs a way to reset your life. Of course, you may also be one of the thousands who have planned from the start to make the Armed Forces your permanent occupation.

Whatever your reason for joining the military, the Armed Forces offers significant benefits. In addition to providing educational assistance , the military can also be a launching point for more lucrative and fulfilling jobs than what you may be used to as a civilian.

Whether you are enlisting to begin a career in the military or hoping use your experience to find one outside the Armed Forces, you will first need to qualify by passing the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, commonly known as the ASVAB test.

What is the ASVAB?

The ASVAB is a military aptitude test that serves to both assess the abilities of recruits and place them in the jobs most suitable to those abilities. It’s a requirement if you want to enlist in the Armed Forces, and recruiters will use your scores to predict where you may best fit in the military.

The test is administered in three different forms, with essentially two different versions, both of which are composed solely of multiple-choice questions.

The CAT-ASVAB is a computer-based test administered at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and used for enlistment purposes only. The CAT stands for Computer Adaptive Test: an automated test administration system that displays questions, scores and records answers, and allows for flexible start times and self-paced responses. You are allowed to complete the CAT-ASVAB at your own pace: when you complete a test in the battery, you can immediately move on to the next section without waiting for everyone else to move on. However, once you complete a question, you cannot go back and change your answer.

The CAT-ASVAB gives you 153 minutes to complete 145 questions among 10 subtests. Because it is computer-based, you can take it at your own pace within the time allotted, and you are permitted to leave once you have completed the test. (Note: If you are specifically looking to join the Navy, you will take the Coding Speed test in addition to the other 10 subtests.)

MET-site ASVAB

The MET-site ASVAB is given at a Mobile Examination Site to those who have been referred by their recruiters. Unlike the CAT-ASVAB, it is a Paper & Pencil (or P&P) test, so you can change your answers at any time within each subtest. However, you will not be permitted to leave until the entire allowed time has elapsed. How many questions are on the ASVAB? In just 134 minutes, you will be given 200 questions to answer. You will have only about 40 seconds per question on this version of the ASVAB, as opposed to 63 seconds per question on the CAT-ASVAB.

Student ASVAB

The Student ASVAB is identical to the MET-site ASVAB, but it has a different purpose. Rather than serving as a qualifying test, it is used primarily to help high school and college students explore different career paths. However, you will still receive a military qualification score, so you can use your test results if you decide to enlist. Recently, some recruiters have been able to administer a computer version of the Student ASVAB at their offices.

Computerized Adaptive Testing means that if the correct answer is chosen, the next question will be harder. If the answer given is incorrect, the next question will be easier. After each item is administered, information is collected and evaluated, and the item best suited for your estimated ability level is selected to be administered next. With the P&P ASVAB, everyone receives the same questions, so it can seem easier or harder than the CAT-ASVAB depending on your level of ability.

If you are running out of time on the CAT-ASVAB, it is best to skip questions you aren’t sure of or can’t get to, as there’s a penalty for guessing. With the P&P test, there is no such penalty, so you want to make sure you answer every question—even if that means filling in random guesses.

What material does the ASVAB cover?

The two versions of the ASVAB essentially cover the same material, although there are a few differences. While there are 10 subtests on the CAT-ASVAB, the other forms of the test have eight ASVAB sections.

SUBTEST 1: General Science

This section is designed to test topics from courses taught in most high schools: life science, earth and space science, and physical science. You will see questions covering botany, zoology, anatomy, physiology, and ecology, as well as items dealing with force and motion mechanics, energy, fluids, atomic structure, and chemistry.

SUBTEST 2: Arithmetic Reasoning

The Arithmetic Reasoning subtest helps to both characterize your mathematics comprehension and assess logical thinking. It measures your ability to solve basic arithmetic problems encountered in everyday life. This section is loaded with word problems, so if you’re like the many students who dislike such problems, you should seek out an ASVAB tutor to help with your preparation.

SUBTEST 3: Word Knowledge

No surprises here—this section tests your knowledge of words. Some questions simply check your vocabulary by asking what words mean, while others provide the context of a sentence. Both versions of the ASVAB give you 30 seconds or less to complete each question.

In a style similar to the SAT and ACT, this section presents passages to read and then asks questions to check your comprehension of the material. Basically, it’s seeing how much you can recall and apply from high school math. This section covers topics up through Geometry and Algebra 2 courses, but it also includes some probability and statistics material.

SUBTEST 6: Electronics Information

Electronics Information tests your understanding of electrical current, circuits, devices, and systems. This is an area most applicants are not familiar with, so prior preparation is critical.

SUBTEST 7: Auto & Shop Information

This particular section measures your aptitude for automotive maintenance and repair and wood and metal shop practices. If you have taken such an industrial arts course in high school or at a vocational-technical school, then you have a head start in these areas. For most people, significant time is required in order to become familiar with the material.

NOTE: On the CAT-ASVAB, this material is split into separate sections (7 and 8), one for automotive knowledge and one for wood and metal shop knowledge.

SUBTEST 8 (9 on the CAT-ASVAB): Mechanical Comprehension

The Mechanical Comprehension subtest assesses your knowledge of the principles of mechanical devices, structural support, and properties of materials. Much like the material in the previous two sections, this is an area many applicants are unfamiliar with. A mechanical engineering tutor can help fill in knowledge gaps.

SUBTEST 10 (on CAT-ASVAB only): Assembling Objects

This subtest is typically used to see if a person would be a good fit for mechanical, electronic, or similarly skilled jobs. Its purpose is to assess your ability to visualize three-dimensional objects that have been broken down into their component pieces. Using a drawing of a disassembled object and four pictures, you are to choose the picture that depicts what the object should look like when it is properly assembled.

What do my ASVAB scores mean and how are they used?

The score that matters most when you’re enlisting is the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. Your AFQT score is based upon the four subtests covering language arts and mathematics: Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge. Each branch of the military has its own minimum AFQT score required to enlist. Note that if you have a GED instead of a high school diploma, your required minimum score will be significantly higher. Here’s how to read ASVAB scores: your raw score is the converted into a percentile score, which tells you what percent of test-takers you scored better than. Here are the ASVAB requirements for each of the six branches of the U.S. military:

If you have met the minimum AFQT requirement, your ASVAB scores will be used to measure your academic achievement, assess your ability to learn through future training, and determine specific job qualifications. Your Academic Ability Composite score indicates your potential for further education based upon your capacity for verbal and mathematical activities. Composite scores from various subtests are used to create your Military Careers score, which helps recruits determine their chances of qualifying for various occupations within the Armed Forces. Keep in mind that you must meet the AFQT minimum before the recruiter will even consider the rest of your ASVAB scores. If you don’t score well enough on Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge, you won’t be able to enlist.

How do I take the ASVAB?

The first step is to contact a military recruiter . Once your recruiter determines that you are otherwise qualified, he or she will set up a time for you to take the ASVAB at the nearest MET site or at the closest MEPS.

You are allowed to retake the test if your AFTQ score is below the minimum, but you must wait 30 days after taking the ASVAB the first time. If you don’t clear the minimum the second time around, you can take it again in another 30 days. After that, however, you will have to wait six months to take it again. Scores remain on a potential enlistee’s record for two years.

If you surpass the minimum AFQT score and think you could have done better, you will need to appeal to your recruiter, as retakes are generally not permitted for the sole purpose of improving your ASVAB score. Some branches allow retesting if something unusual happens during the test, and the Navy permits retesting if there is evidence of improvement in education or language ability, or if the test-taker desires to qualify for a specific job. In such situations, though, your recruiter has the ultimate authority to determine if a retest should be allowed.

How can I prepare most effectively for the ASVAB?

Because of the wide range of subject matter on the ASVAB, every student should prep for the test to some degree. There is a host of good ASVAB test prep sources out there, both in print and online. One nice feature to look for is ready-made flash cards, which are sold either by themselves or as part of a prep book. Make sure you include prep sources that include ASVAB practice tests. Remember that no matter how much you work on being familiar with content, the most important element of your preparation will be working on those practice tests.

Since the AFQT score is the one that qualifies you to enlist in the military, you would certainly benefit from the guidance of an expert tutor who can get you ready for the Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge sections. Since the ASVAB is a fully multiple-choice test, strong test-taking skills are of utmost importance. How to Write a Resume That Stands Out

You finally found it! The perfect job for you. Now, all you have to do to get the process started is to submit your resume. The problem is that hundreds of your peers are probably thinking exactly the same thing. How do you stand out?

You finally found it! The perfect job for you. Now, all you have to do to get the process started is to submit your resume. The problem is that hundreds or even thousands of your peers are probably thinking exactly the same thing about exactly the same job. So how do you create a one-page document that will make you and your accomplishments stand out from the crowd?

Your resume is a key part of the job application process: it is the first document that an employer reviews to determine whether they will interview and eventually employ you. Remember that employers often have very limited time to perform this duty. Crafting a strong resume really matters!

Resumes communicate who you are and what you have accomplished. They may be the only document an employer sees to evaluate your record before making a decision to move forward with your application, or they may be used in conjunction with resources like LinkedIn or professional networking profiles and/or a cover letter. A resume that “stands out” in a positive way is one that has been written thoughtfully, clearly and concisely, effectively communicating your abilities and strengths in a very brief space.

Six basic tips will help you build an outstanding professional resume. Note that resumes may vary by professional field (e.g. engineering vs. non-engineering), by location or by other factors such as professional degree. These tips are designed around some of the most common sections and most useful points for resumes across different types.

Tip 1: How to Write an Education Section that Stands Out

The education section demonstrates that you have the academic qualifications for the position. The key questions you should ask yourself while writing this section is, “Have I clearly communicated the strongest and most relevant aspects of my educational experience?” The next question is, “Is this section organized in a way that is easily readable by the employer?”

The education section is important for all applicants but may be weighted differently depending on how long it has been since you graduated from a degree program. For instance, an employer may have a different level of interest in the educational history of a college senior, compared to someone who has been professionally working for several years after college. Understanding this fact may influence where you choose to place this section on your resume.

In general, you should include all of the higher education that you may have had, including undergraduate, graduate, or professional schooling.  You may also consider including online courses, certificates, and completed programs through companies like Coursera. Most people list their experiences in an order called reverse chronological, meaning that they list the most recent experience first, and work backwards down the page.

For each listed school, provide the full name of the school or online program, the years of your attendance, your major or majors, if applicable, as well as a minor if applicable. Include the type of degree received (e.g. a Bachelor of Arts or Master of Science) and the year of graduation. If you are graduating soon, include the month and year of graduation so employers know when you will be available to work. If you have studied abroad, include the institution, program of study, and any relevant coursework.

You may want to include which semesters you qualified for special academic recognition, if any.  Other special awards, scholarships, or competitive grants can also be listed in this section. If you have non-academic awards, such as for sports or community service, you may choose to create a separate section of your resume for honors and awards.

Tip 2: How to Make the Experience Section Stand Out

Along with education, your experience is one of the most important ways to show that you are qualified for a position. Use this section to clearly convey your strongest professional experiences, whether paid or unpaid. Be sure to give detailed aspects of your roles and responsibilities for each listed position. Emphasize any relationships or similarities between your past experiences and the job you want. You should also include the start and end dates of your involvement with each organization, and any key accomplishments from the role. Don’t forget to include where the company is located, including city and state/province, or even country if different from your home country.

Ask yourself: while involved with the company, did I win any awards, get any special recognition, make new discoveries, start a new program? If so, what happened and what were the results? Quantify your experiences when you can! As the expression goes, “Show don’t tell.” In other words, you can more effectively convey a point by giving concrete examples, rather than through vague descriptions. Consider the following examples.

Instead of:

Improved worker productivity significantly, leading to recognition from upper management.

(A resume reader may ask: What does ‘improved’ mean? What does recognition mean? How much have you improved it by?)

Improved quarter returns by 25%, exceeding projections and leading to the Top Manager Award, given to only one manager in the company per year.

When it comes to language, be honest about your job functions while thinking of professional ways to present your experiences.

Sometimes people fall into a trap of thinking that their job or internship experience won’t sound impressive enough to list. The job may have felt like “sitting at a desk, answering the phone.” True, but you may have been performing other responsibilities or developing useful job-related skills without realizing that you were!

When you were at a desk, were you at the FRONT desk? Were you the only person or the main person in this position? Were you overseeing anything while you were sitting there? Were you the sole person responsible for any tasks? Did you have to learn how to deal calmly and confidently with any customer issues? Did people occasionally ask you to take on additional responsibilities, even for a short time?

It is fair to say that a person sitting at a front desk, may have been MANAGING the front desk, or even managing the desk when the person’s boss was away. Time during which an individual is placed in charge of a business or an office, even if for a limited time, can convey responsibility to a prospective employer.

Look at your accomplishment bullet and ask yourself:

  • What did I do in the job?
  • Using what?
  • To what extent or impact?

Sometimes you may need to pare down your list in order to avoid making your resume too lengthy. Try to select the accomplishments based partly on how impressive they are and partly on how well they relate to the position you want. To describe your experience, always use more than one sentence or bullet. That said, word economy in your bulleted descriptions is also important. Try to keep each bulleted description or sentence to one or two lines at most. You can often rephrase a description, eliminating words while keeping the meaning. The more information you can present clearly and concisely within the short resume format, the more the employer will understand what you can do for them.

Remember that by providing relevant details in each statement of your experience, you will give the employer enough information to evaluate you and also provide them with ideas of what they might want to discuss with you in an interview.

Tip 3: How to Create a Leadership and Activities Section that Stands Out

For many people, especially students and recent graduates, a Leadership & Activities section can be a fantastic differentiator for your resume. If you have not been in the workforce for long, or if you have only worked summers and part-time, then you may not have much relevant content to add to your Experience section. A strong Leadership & Activities section can help you fill that gap while also telling an employer something about you as a person.

When creating the section, you should first consider what student organizations and activities you would want to include. Then, you should consider what you would want to write about each one. In general, this section is much like the Experience section, except that it is about what you have done in a personal, rather than professional, setting.

Of course, because student organizations and activities are personal, you should be careful about which ones you choose to list; they should be appropriate to a professional setting. For example, you should probably not choose to share that you were chosen “Top Drinker” of your college’s “Beer Keg of the Day” club. On the other hand, if you volunteered at a food bank, wrote for a school publication, or had a membership in an honor society, those accomplishments would be worth sharing.

Most importantly, you should include student organizations and activities where you have made significant contributions or held leadership positions. Just as you did in the Experience section, you should think about what you did in the organization, any responsibilities you had, any skills you used, and any knowledge you gained. If you made improvements to the student organization or activity, definitely include concrete examples. Make sure to consider if any of your experiences with student organizations and activities could be related to the position you are applying for. Could any of the skills you have learned be useful in the job?

Because student organizations and activities can offer students leadership opportunities and experiences that are often limited to experienced professionals in companies, this section is your chance to show not only that you are qualified for the position but that you have even greater potential. Make the most of this opportunity to show the employer what you can do!

Tip 4: How to Highlight Your Skills

Another important component of what defines an attractive candidate in the modern economy is their skill set. Because employers want people who can quickly start being productive, they care about what skills a job prospect has, particularly in certain technical fields. In most cases, skills are incorporated into the Experience section, if you acquired skills as part of your internship or job, and in the Education section, if you obtained the skills through coursework, research, or projects. Sometimes people with additional skills, such as technical skills, foreign language, or certifications obtained outside of university, will place them into a separate section at the end of the resume. Whichever format you choose, you still need to emphasize the skills you have, so that an employer can easily see how you can help them.

You should ask yourself a few important questions. What skills do I have? What skills are my target employers looking for? Are my skills hard skills (i.e. technical, like computer programming) or soft skills, such as the ability to listen?

Make a list! Separate the skills into hard skills and soft skills. What skills are most in demand (on both lists) for the position you are interested in (One good way to decide this is to look at job listings for many similar positions and note how often a particular skill is listed.)? How can you highlight your proficiency in these skills?

Lead with your strongest skills and/or the ones that seem the most marketable. Let’s say you know the programming language Python. How well do you know it? How many years have you used it? Do you have any specialized knowledge and ability that may set you apart from a competing applicant? Do you have demonstrations of your work anywhere for a prospective employer to see?

Here’s an example of a skills entry that might be included into the Experience section:

Programming: 8 years of experience with Python and similar scripting languages, wrote MyFirstPythonProject software available on GitHub

Useful tip: Artists may have portfolios for their artistic work. Examples of appropriate work, such as for coding, may not be a bad idea to have available in addition to a resume!

Even if your field is not technical, you may still have important hard skills. Do you have experience with popular office software, such as Excel, PowerPoint, or Access? Do you know any foreign languages, even at a basic level? Think about not only what might be required in the day-to-day performance of the job, but what other skills could potentially be useful to the employer.

You will want to include all the relevant skills to demonstrate your qualifications, without including too much less-relevant information which could distract from your message. Think carefully about which skills you want to include, and which could be left out. Remember to choose your words economically to maximize content in a minimum of space. With a little effort, your skills details can transform your resume from a simple list of accomplishments to a document that gets an employer thinking about all the great ways you could contribute!

Tip 5: Formatting and Making the Resume Look Professional

Believe it or not, the appearance and organization of a resume can greatly affect the response. The first hurdle for any resume is to get the employer to read it. An attractively presented, concise resume is easy for a recruiter to pick up. On the other hand, if a resume is 5 pages, written in 6-point font, a prospective employer may not think that it is worth the time to find a magnifying glass and read it. In most cases, a resume should not exceed one page (sometimes two pages, mostly for more experienced candidates, or in scientific and technical fields where publication lists can be lengthy), which has a few key sections that are separated from one another or clearly delineated.

Here are some suggestions to make the format stand out positively:

  • Use 10-12-point font or larger. (10 point may even sometimes be too small, and the choice can depend on the chosen font.) Your audience should easily be able to read the size of the writing. Often prospective employers may not have perfect vision, so readability may create problems if the text is too small.
  • Use a clean, professional-looking font. Don’t use fonts that are overly artistic and hinder the ability for the reader to understand them. Some find fonts like Times New Roman most clearly readable; others find competing fonts better. The font is just an aspect of the writing; don’t let it overpower the words themselves.
  • Use respectable margins. Don’t try to deviate too much from 0.5 margins at either side. Also, don’t make the margins too large, beyond 0.75 or 1 unit on either side. Around 1 unit on the top and bottom should be acceptable.
  • Use adequate spacing.
  • Abbreviate months of employment.
  • Include proper contact information. Most people include full name, address, email address and at least one phone number at the top of the document.

Tip 6: Revision and Review 

One of the most important steps to writing a good resume is having others you trust look it over. A small spelling or grammar error on a resume could cause problems by making it seem like you lack attention to detail.

You can start with standard spelling and grammar checking programs. However, while these programs are very helpful, they are not enough by themselves. For example, the programs may not flag errors with homophones (e.g. hair and hare). They also have difficulty with uncommon, technical, or foreign words that may not be in their dictionaries. In addition, they are not looking for formatting inconsistencies or at the overall appearance of the resume. While computer programs can help with many issues, there is still no substitute for the human eye.

Start by printing a copy of your resume and looking for errors and inconsistencies yourself. Then, present copies to others along with a description of the job or educational opportunity that you are applying for. When presenting your resume to others, consider at least two kinds of people: a peer, and an experienced professional or teacher. Each may identify different issues with the resume.

Ask the reviewers to provide two types of notes: technical revisions and feedback on the writing, organization and effectiveness of the resume.

Once you get feedback, discuss it with them for a few minutes. Remember, don’t take constructive criticism personally! They are trying to help you, and their points of view may be similar to that of the employer. Your goal is to create a resume that most people will appreciate.

Once you obtain proper feedback, you can work on improving your resume. Try to incorporate your reviewers’ suggestions. Their ideas may even make you think of other ways to improve your resume! Most importantly, always remember that once you have made your revisions, review your resume again before you send it out!

The stronger your resume, the better your chance of getting an interview and landing a meaningful job. Just by following these simple tips, you will be well on your way to resume success, creating a clear, detailed, and concise document designed to impress employers. So, get writing and get yourself noticed!

Quick Resume Tips:

  • Use the position description to decide what to include.
  • Pick a standard and consistent format.
  • Describe your experiences with specificity and strong action verbs.
  • Record accomplishments and contributions, not just responsibilities.
  • Revise carefully!
  • Don’t include personal information about your age, religion, health or marital status.
  • Photos are generally not preferred for U.S. resumes.
  • Typically, you will not be expected to share past salary information on a resume.
  • Employers assume that “references will be available upon request,” so you don’t need to include them on your resume unless asked.
  • Employers may use keyword scanning on resumes, so know what words are relevant to the industry and position and ensure they appear in your resume.

Why do you need a strong résumé?

  • In most cases, your résumé will be part of every job, internship, or graduate school application you submit.
  • Your résumé—along with your cover letter—is what will determine whether you are invited for an interview.
  • Your résumé is one of the few parts of the job search process over which you have 100% control. The effort you put into your résumé also sends clues to potential employers about the level of effort you put into your work. If your résumé looks like it was put together quickly with little attention to detail, what message might you be sending? Make sure your résumé is excellent!

  • Content and formatting matter. If you have great content, but your reader can’t easily make sense of it or find it, you won’t get invited for an interview. How to Write a Strong Résumé

Start with a blank document or our ATS-friendly, editable template . We don’t recommend using templates from sites such as Pinterest or Canva as they become restrictive when you are trying to adjust formatting later. Then add each of the sections detailed below.

1. Contact Information

First, add your contact information at the top of the page

Your name should be large (e.g. 14 pt font or larger)

Your contact information should include your email address, phone number, city, and state (street address is not needed), and a personalized link to your LinkedIn profile.

2. Education

Next, as a current student, your education section should be listed at the top under your contact information.

Information that should be included: 

  • Institution name, city, and state
  • School or college, including study abroad institutions and graduate schools, where relevant
  • Date of graduation (month and year)
  • Major, if known
  • GPA, if above a 3.0 or if required by an employer

Other optional information:

  • Relevant coursework: You can share up to five classes that are relevant to the position to which you are applying. This is a great way to tailor your résumé to a specific position and to show content knowledge that may not be reflected in your major or elsewhere on your résumé.  
  • Academic honors or awards: e.g. Dean’s list (with dates) or other academic recognition can be included here
  • High school can be included through your second year of college if space permits unless there is a compelling reason to keep it there (e.g. for networking purposes). 

3. Experience

For most students, your experience section(s) will come after Education. An exception would be if the position description calls for key technical skills.

  • Keep in mind that your experience is not just your paid experience. It can include jobs, internships, research, volunteer work, leadership, or campus involvement. You can choose how you title your experience section(s). Some ideas include: Relevant Experience, Volunteer Experience, Leadership & Involvement. 
  • Since you want your most relevant experience closer to the top of your résumé, consider how you want to represent your various experiences. What experiences are most relevant in terms of skills gained and content learned to the positions to which you are now applying? 
  • Within each section, list your experiences in reverse chronological order by end date. 

How to write strong bullet statements for each experience:

Great bullet statements will describe your achievements rather than tasks.

Start each bullet with an action verb, then demonstrate the value you added to your work by stating what you did (Project), how you did it (Action), and why you did it (Result).

  • What was the project or task?
  • What actions did you take? (think specifically about your individual contributions)
  • What was the result or outcome of your contribution?

Cite numbers whenever possible to demonstrate the scope of your work (e.g. number of people supervised, number of children in classroom, size of event, budget you oversaw, etc.).

4. Additional Sections to Consider

Following are some additional sections you may include on your résumé:

Objective or Summary: For most students, this is unnecessary and simply takes up space. However, if you are looking to enter a field in which you have very limited experience, it can be helpful to include a short objective that articulates what you are seeking and can show that you are applying to a role with intent and purpose. 

Skills/Interests: It is strongly encouraged to include a section on skills such as computer skills, languages, laboratory skills. For most students, this section will appear at the bottom of your résumé, but for students interested in science and technology, see specific tips in the next section. Personal interests such as hobbies can be included if space permits.

Career Field-Specific Résumé Tips

Creative fields.

  • When applying for a creative position, such as a graphic designer, web designer, or creative manager, it can be appropriate to have a creative résumé designed in a program like Adobe InDesign.
  • While a creative résumé can include graphics and colors, it should still look professional and be easy to read. 
  • It’s a good idea to have a traditional version of your résumé along with the creative one. Applicant Tracking Systems cannot always pull information from graphics or heavily designed résumés, so use a traditional résumé when applying for a position online and save your creative résumé to be emailed directly or to give to someone in-person.

  • When applying to positions in the federal government, it is appropriate to submit a federal résumé. Federal résumés are generally 2-5 pages in length and include more required information, including U.S. citizenship status, veteran status, the address and contact information for prior employers and supervisors, and specific USAJobs.gov job identification number.

  • List the number of hours worked during clinicals.

  • It is critical to keep your Nursing résumé to 1 page only.
  • Additionally, if you have worked with any data entry system such as EPIC, list it under the skills section.

What are the exceptions to the “one-page résumé” rule.

Undergraduate students should keep their résumé to one page, although there are some career fields for which a two-page résumé is acceptable (e.g. teaching and federal government). Longer résumé (up to two pages) are acceptable for graduate school applications as well. 

What is an applicant tracking system? How do I know if a company is using one?

Because companies receive so many résumés for each job, applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen résumés electronically are commonly used. Over 98.8% of Fortune 500 companies use ATS while 66% of large companies and 35% of small organizations rely on them ( Jobscan ). Given that so many companies use this technology, assume that your résumé will be screened by an ATS and create an ATS-friendly résumé.

The ATS will screen your résumé and cover letter for keywords that match the job description, so make sure to use keywords from the job description in your résumé and your cover letter.

What will make my résumé stand out to employers?

  • Putting keywords on your résumé that match the job description (as long as they make sense). 
  • Making sure your résumé is readable, neat, and free of typos and spelling or grammatical errors.
  • Dividing your experience into Relevant Experience and Additional Experience with Relevant coming first.
  • Using bullet points rather than blocks of text to describe your experiences. Start each bullet point with a strong action verb, and show the result or purpose of what you did in each bullet point.
  • Using numbers to quantify achievements when possible (e.g. served over 100 customers per day during a three-hour shift).
  • Having a well-rounded variety of experiences and activities.

Should I use a résumé template?

While it might be tempting to use a résumé template from sites such as Pinterest or Canva because it is predesigned, it is best to stay away from résumé templates and create a Word document from scratch. Résumé templates are often not compatible with ATS and could render your résumé unreadable by many employers. See our editable résumé template for ATS-friendly formatting. 

You should avoid using graphics and colors in your résumé unless you are applying for a creative position, such as a graphic designer, web designer, or creative manager. For these roles it may be appropriate to have a creative résumé designed in a program like Adobe InDesign, however you should still avoid using a template. Can ChatGPT write my résumé? How should I use it?

ChatGPT and other AI tools can be used to enhance your résumé, but should not be used to write one for you! AI should not replace your own creativity and perspective and the results generated are meant to provide suggestions rather than to be copied and pasted word-for-word. Think of these ChatGPT résumé prompts as a supplement to your own ideas and insights, not a replacement.

When using AI to help with your application documents, submit prompts that are specific to the role for which you are applying. This will help you create materials that are tailored to the position and demonstrate your relevant skills and experience.

Just like any other writing, edit and proofread anything generated by AI before submitting. Make sure the content flows well, the wording is typo- and error-free, and the metrics are accurate. You should be able to speak to every bullet point on your résumé if asked about it in an interview.

Should I include things I did in high school on my résumé?

Yes, you may include extracurricular activities, sports, jobs, internships, and volunteer roles on your résumé up through your second year in college or until you start replacing your high school involvement with activities you are involved in at Boston College. You may still keep work experiences from high school on your résumé if you have space and/or they are relevant to your future career interests.

What document format should I use when applying for jobs online?

Should I include my pronouns on my résumé?

What is a CV? How is it different from a résumé?

A curriculum vitae (CV) contains significantly more information and is more detailed than a standard résumé. Unlike the one-page rule for résumés, there is no page limit for a CV. The CV includes your career history as well as your education, awards, special honors, grants or scholarships, research or academic projects, and publications. You might also include professional references, coursework, fieldwork, descriptions of dissertations, and a personal profile that lists your relevant skills and attributes.

Is there a difference between an undergraduate CV versus a graduate CV?

There are no formatting differences between an undergraduate and graduate CV except that a graduate CV might be longer because graduate students typically have more experience.
