Studies from Princeton professor Uri Hasson show that certain movies can actually synchronize the brains of the audience. The article reports that viewers “tend to blink at the same time ,” and that, “Even their brain activity is, to a remarkable degree, synchronized.”

As professional “presentation people,” especially ones who love cinematic presentations, Duarte is always looking for ways to help presenters increase audience engagement and measure the success of their presentations—and this research may help presenters become better at both.

Duarte’s methodology is rooted in time-honored visual storytelling principles captured from both cinema and literature. We know that these techniques work, but research like Hasson’s is beginning to show us exactly how.

You’ve probably experienced the subtle effects of this cinematic synchronicity while watching a great movie, but what about during a great presentation?

Not all movies, it turns out, have the same mind-melding power. Structured movies that use a lot of cinematic devices—cuts, and camera angles, and carefully composed shots designed to control viewers’ attention—do it to a greater extent than movies of unstructured reality.

So, how can this information help you craft a more successful presentation? Most presentations are rooted firmly in reality, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t create a cinematic experience for your audience.

Visual storytelling techniques are intended to help you clarify and control how your audience receives your idea. Just like careful camera work and composition help filmmakers impact their audience, beautiful and thoughtfully designed slides help you achieve the same purpose. Of course you don’t need to treat every presentation like a feature film, but you can use cinematic devices to help you make your talk more impactful, and even more synchronous.

Brains in Sync

We can see examples of this synchronicity in presentations like Steve Jobs’ 2007 launch of the iPhone . Yes, the audience often laughed and clapped in unison , but applause and laughter tend to be fairly cued and controlled behaviors. However, when Jobs revealed the iPhone’s scrolling feature, the audience let out an audible gasp. This sudden, involuntary reaction is similar to the subconscious synchronicity we see in Hasson’s brain scans. Using techniques like shocking statistics, evocative visuals, and memorable dramatization , Jobs’ presentation was able to keep the audience engaged and synchronized.

We can also see this synchronicity in Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech during the 1963 March on Washington. King’s speech famously used poetic repetition, pacing, and visual metaphors to engage and electrify his audience. The speech was almost musical, using cadence to create suspense and synchronicity.

These techniques work both ways. As the article states, “If you want people to think alike and be in synch, you could use this tool. If you want people to think differently, you could also use it.” Think about the goal of your presentation. If you’re hoping to have everyone leave the room with a single idea or value, you may want to invest time in making your presentation environment as cinematic as possible. But if you need your audience to leave the presentation thinking critically, you may want to employ the “unstructured reality” approach.

In addition to understanding and encouraging audience engagement, this research may help us learn to measure the success of a presentation, a task that can be difficult or altogether impossible.

Social media provides analytical data in the form of views, likes, and tweets, but it doesn’t apply to every presentation, and still may not accurately depict its success. For unpublicized presentations without an explicit call to action, it can be nearly impossible to gauge how well they’re received. Quantitative data—like applause, audience testimonials, and even water cooler conversation—feels great in the moment, but it can be inaccurate and unwieldy to capture.

In the information age, quantitative data is king. And unfortunately, in the presentation world, hard data is hard to come by. Hasson’s research gets us a little closer to understanding the power behind stories and presentations. Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky joked, “’Soon they’ll do test screenings with people in MRIs.’ The audience laughed, but it didn’t seem like he was joking, at least not entirely.”

Who knows, it may be time for Duarte to invest in an MRI machine. For a good presentation, we’ll try just about anything.

You’ve got a great idea for a short film, but how do you approach potential funders or backers? We’ll look at how to create a film pitch presentation, designed to impress.

Using a Template

Using a pre-made template can help when creating a pitch. It takes some of the hassle out of designing, meaning you don't have to start from scratch. 

It's important that you use a template that you can adapt and modify to suit. The  Clean PowerPoint Template  by SteelSlides, on  Graphic River , is a great example of something that is incredibly flexible. It comes with a number of themes and different slide types, so it's easy to include, say, your financial projections, all whilst maintaining the same visual style.

Asking what the pitch is for may seem like a silly question, but you won’t always be pitching for funds. You could be trying to recruit staff or crew, or you may be trying to convince a venue to host a screening … . There are many possibilities.

You’ll need to tailor your pitch to your end goal, but it can help to have one template that you just adjust each time, rather than starting over.

Who is the Pitch For?

You might think asking who the pitch is for is the same as asking what the pitch is for, but the questions provide different information. Considering who you will be approaching takes into account your use of language. If you’re asking for money from business owners, then they’re most likely going to want to see facts and figures with your pitch. They’ll want to know why it’s worth their while to invest in your project. This sort of pitch would need you to put aside your personal excitement about the idea and look at it dispassionately. Ask yourself tough questions and have comprehensive answers, backed up with solid research; you can bet you’ll be asked for the details when you want people to part with their cash.

If you are pitching for cast or crew rather than money, you’d probably want to get your contributors to emotionally buy into your film and get excited about it. In this instance, think about the characters in your film. Even a documentary will have a "character"—if not a person, then a town or a way of life, for example. A problem I’ve often encountered is that we expect everyone to be as taken with our ideas as we are, but remember, your audience is coming to the project cold. You need to kick-start that enthusiasm, light a fire under them, and get your audience as stoked up about your story as you are.

How Will You Pitch?

If you can, it’s always better to pitch in person. There’s really no substitute for being there to answer questions and put your personality across in the pitch. 

Presenting in person is not always possible though, so structure your pitch for someone who is coming to your presentation without you there to explain each piece. Think about whether your presentation says everything you need it to. Does it give all the information required in a succinct way?

You might want to include a short summary slide at the end to reaffirm the points you’ve made through your presentation.

Who Are You?

It seems obvious, but it’s easy to get caught up in pitching your idea only to forget to include information about you. Opinions vary about where to put your information; many film makers suggest it’s your first slide. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong place, as long as you include all the relevant information.

Based on my personal experience, I like to include a small "about us" section at the end. Hit them with the (hopefully great) idea, explain how you’ll achieve it, and then show why you are the one qualified to do it. It’s wise to include your business name and logo, and some contact information, on each slide just in case a slide ends up separated from the whole.

Who is Your Intended Audience?

Considering your audience has overlap with some of the previous points but at this stage, think about the audience for your final, finished project. You’ll have worked this out while you were planning the project, but it needs to be clear in your pitch that you know who your audience is—who this will appeal to.

Know your demographic: Does it have national appeal or local? Is it suitable for kids? Is there a gap in the market for your project or is your market oversaturated? Even if the market is busy, your project is not necessarily a bad idea. But you'll need to be able to justify why not if asked.

We're talking about the financial kind of breakdown, not emotional. Have costs (even estimated costs) for everything. Saying you need a particular amount just isn’t enough. You’ll be expected to justify every cost and to have done your research when it comes to getting quotes. Some organisations (like local councils) require three different quotes for work.

Remember to include a timeline, and again, be realistic. Do you have a particular date you’re aiming for, and is there a reason for that? Your film release might be tying in to a local event or specific date. Tagging your film onto an existing event can have added value because there may already be a crowd of people, and therefore a potential audience.

Promises, Promises

Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Keep expectations realistic or they'll come back to bite you in the end. There will always be things that you wish you could do, or that you try your very best to do, but they just don’t fit into your schedule or budget for whatever reason. This is to be anticipated, but certainly shouldn’t be happening frequently.

The Presentation

If you’re creating a film pitch, I think it’s safe to assume you’re a creative, media-savvy person. Treat the creation of the visual elements of your pitch as seriously as you would the content.

You’re a master of the moving image, so add some video to show what you can do. Keep the clips short and relevant.

Keep your bullet points direct and talk around them. Later, the bullet points should serve as reminders of what your pitch contained, rather than reading like minutes of a meeting. Include images where appropriate to break up any text, and inject humour into your pitch if it’s appropriate to do so. People do business with people; if you’re likeable and easy to work with, you’ll be a more pleasing prospect to a potential backer.

Be Prepared

The importance of being prepared cannot be overstated: do not rely on someone else’s technology or system. I recently did a talk where I needed to use a PowerPoint presentation and was told to bring it on a memory stick. I try to be prepared for any eventuality, so I also took along my laptop and an HDMI cable. When I got to the venue, I discovered that their version of PowerPoint didn’t support my newer presentation. A quick switch to my laptop for output and all was well. Without the backup, I’d have really struggled.

It’s nerve-wracking enough doing a presentation; worrying about the set-up is an added layer of complication you could do without. Bring a backup method of presenting (where possible) and you’ll cover all your bases.

Tell a Story

Telling a story is good advice for shaping the content, but I think it’s important to also tell that story visually. The story is not just about your plot or documentary subject; your whole presentation should have a narrative. Think about how you’ll get into your pitch: Will you introduce yourself or will you wow them with your film skills in the guise of a clip? How will you end? Tailing off and waiting for your audience to realise it’s over is a little awkward, so think in advance how you’ll get out of your pitch. Is there a call to action? Do you take your potential backers through the emotional wringer and leave them bereft at the end?

Give Every Page Equal Importance

No page or part of your presentation should be filler. Give each section due care and attention. If the information is redundant, scrap it or replace it with something else. Even your "about you" section should leap out and grab your listeners' attention. 

Keep things simple but effective. It’s easy to go a bit crazy with effects, whizzes, and bangs; the whole thing can become a mess and fall flat. Use your talents subtly, enough to impress but not so much that you look as if you’re trying too hard!

Consistency

Using a template is great for consistency. You can still inject some variety into each slide, but the running theme and elements will be complementary. Stick to the same fonts and styles throughout. Try and edit your footage or photographs consistently too; if you can stick to a similar colour and tone for everything, it’ll help pull your whole pitch together into a sustainable and interesting whole.

Good Luck, and Remember …

Don’t give up if you don’t get backing; it isn’t a failure. If you’re not successful, ask for feedback and use that to improve and hone your pitch for next time. Sometimes, it’s just not the right time and learning to take that on the chin is part of the whole process.

If you’re successful (congratulations!), follow up on your pitch and get that deal in writing with contracts as soon as possible. Keep in touch with key people to make sure their interest doesn’t wane, but balance your contact so as not to be a pest.

The book is a comprehensive guide to how to the craft and lifestyle of indie filmmaking, taking the reader from script through production, and on into the festival and distribution world.

In this exclusive excerpt, Dan follows up a chapter on how to put together a business plan with an emphasis that in this day and age, indie filmmakers can and should also start their projects with some sort of visual presentation.

Regardless of whether you’re Kickstarting your little 10-minute short, or pitching yourself to direct a $100 million studio film.  

Remember: It’s a Visual Medium 

Beyond the traditional text-heavy business plan , increasingly people are expecting you to make some kind of visual presentation.

This can vary wildly, but might include storyboards, pre-vis animation, a lookbook, a mood board, a mood reel, a short film, trailer, a Kickstarter-style fundraising video or some combination of all of them. 

On most of my films, I usually do a handful of storyboards early in the process.

Now, I’m not talking about the simple stick-figure storyboards a director might do to prepare for a particular scene or effects sequence. Rather, I mean full-color, full-page boards prepared by a real artist that are more illustrative of the tone, mood or style of various scenes in the movie.

Luckily, my old college roommate, Matt Fuller , is a professional commercial storyboard artist in LA,  and for the price of a good meal I can usually get him to help me out on these.

I know my French director pal Frédéric Forestier has his childhood friend do the same.

One variation I’ve seen is at Pixar where they’ll do maybe a 20-panel grid just showing the color palette of the film as it progresses through different moods and tones. It’s a simple, but elegant technique that anyone can do with a 64-crayon box of Crayolas.

Either way, these are good visual elements to include in your business plan, website or other presentation material. 

If you aren’t artistically minded at all, or if you simply have no friends, then what can you do?

Find other films that have the kind of style or technique you want to go for in your film. Get screen grabs of your favorite scenes, preferably wide shots that don’t really show any recognizable faces.

What you don’t want is a big close up of Harrison Ford in Blade Runner as a visual reference for your micro-budget sci-film. All your investors will wonder why you’ve cast your cousin Larry, and why you don’t have Harrison Ford in your movie.

If you’re good with Photoshop , blur out faces, or crop around them. It’s fine if these are recognizable films (you are telling people, after all, that it’s Blade Runner meets Kindergarten Cop   — you may as well show stills from those).

Likewise, use any photography you can get your hands on — from perfume ads to car commercials.

Better yet, head out to some possible locations, set your DSLR in “still” mode and shoot some actual photographs. Strung together, laid out nicely, these can turn a boring text-heavy business plan into a sleek and sexy “lookbook!”

Even if you’re not actually doing a crowdfunding campaign, per se, I think most investors these days expect to see some kind of video presentation.

This could be a short film upon which the feature will be based (I did this with my film Open House ). It could be the scrawny director with bad posture leaning into the camera and begging for money. It could be a splashy mood reel with quick clips from other films, or it could be some combination.

Hey, if it’s good enough for Spike Lee and Zach Braff, it should be good enough for you!

Whatever you do, please don’t call it a “sizzle reel.” Unless you’re pitching a TV show. Then call it a sizzle reel to your heart’s delight, because that’s what they’re called in TV. But film? Not so much.

Keep in mind that for crowdfunding videos, you really don’t have to worry as much about copyright or music issues like you would with your movie itself, or even a trailer.

After all, you’re not commercially exploiting your pitch video itself. In fact, you may not even show it publicly at all (if, for example, it lives entirely on your Kickstarter page, or as a password protected Vimeo).

So that gives you much freer rein to snag clips from other movies, YouTube clips, stock footage or Grammy-winning songs for which you’d normally pay through the nose or avoid completely.

But don’t fall in love with these videos — if you don’t have all those rights, you won’t be able to put them on your DVD extras if and when you finish your film.

Meanwhile, if any of those rights holders do complain or get upset while you’re in mid-campaign, it’s easy enough to recut your video without the offending material or with the appropriate credit.

What does .vtt stand for? I have no idea. But basically it’s a TextEdit file with the suffix .vtt instead of .txt. There’s a bunch of websites that will show you examples.  Essentially you put it together the same way indie filmmakers have been doing subtitles for years for festival, foreign distribution and DVD purposes.  

My pal, director Matthew Harrison , figured out the nuts and bolts: You write down your subtitles in Text, then import into an Excel spreadsheet.

Then duplicate your Final Cut Pro (FCP) video sequence, add marks every time you want a new subtitle to start, and then export the subclips as a Text file (you can probably do something similar in Premiere or Avid, too).

Presto! You have a handy dandy list of start and stop points that you then copy/paste into Excel next to each subtitle line.

Export the whole thing to Word, clean up the paragraph or tab marks, and export back to TextEdit.

To do a .vtt file specifically, there’s one more trick where you have to convert frame numbers to milliseconds (hint: multiply by 33!), but otherwise, Matt’s technique is useable for almost any subtitle software.

After all, your pitch deck is a visual supplement to your screenplay or script. This is your chance to share your vision of why your film should get made.

First, Let’s Look at the Original Stranger Things Pitch Deck “Montauk”

If you follow @lafilmschool on Instagram and Facebook, you may have seen our video on the Stranger Things pitch deck. If you’re curious, go back and watch the video to see what three elements made that original pitch deck such a success. We’ll dive deeper into what makes a film pitch deck successful here in a moment, but let’s examine the original pitch deck from Netflix’s Stranger Things .

The Duffer brothers built their franchise empire off a charming, supernatural-inspired show concept they originally called “Montauk.” Their pitch neatly laid out the show’s vision across a 20+ page pitch deck to attract networks and eventually secured a home with Netflix.

The title page of the pitch deck shows an eerie grey-washed photograph of an abandoned bike on the side of a desolate road. “Montauk” is clearly displayed in red block letters above the photo. The only other text on the title page is… “An Epic Tale of sci-fi horror.”

Imagery is used throughout the deck to convey what type of vibe the series is aiming to achieve. 

The Duffer Brothers leveraged colors, textures, and even imagery from supernatural ’80s cult classics, building a strong vision for investors right off the bat.

2. Write a Clear and Engaging Synopsis

Your readers should feel hooked right from the introduction page. This sets the tone for the rest of the pitch deck and includes a strong final sentence that sums up what’s to come:

How To Pitch A Movie Idea: Everything You Need To Know

So you have an idea for a new film — that’s great! But it’s important to know how to pitch your movie idea . Do your research, develop a compelling creative pitch, and know the essential “dos” and “don’ts” of selling your idea. Here are some tips from top Hollywood producers in the industry on creating, pitching, and selling a movie idea.

1. Create a Pitch

A pitch is a concise presentation of a film idea, typically made by a screenwriter or director to a producer , executive, or financial sponsor. T he elevator pitch is a short description of your film, usually encapsulated in 90 seconds to two minutes. The 20-minute pitch , also known as the “story” pitch, an in-depth description of the film. Here are six tips for creating a fantastically compelling pitch for your movie idea:

  • Find a void in the marketplace:  Take advantage of proven concepts in the market, and then put a different spin on it, such as adding a different cultural view. By doing this, you’re catering to a “void” in the market but not forcing decision-makers to take a leap of faith on a concept that has never been done before. For inspiration, read about the successful Bravo show “ Jersey Belle .”
  • Appeal to the biggest demographic:  The bigger the target audience, the better. Remember — buyers want a payout. The more appealing to all consumers, the better.
  • Partner with someone with experience: Try to partner with someone in the industry who not only has a proven track record, but also shares your vision, process, and goals. The film “ Girls Trip  ” had a monumental opening weekend, making $30.4 million — and this was the result of a remarkable partnership.
  • The Logline : This  sums up the whole film  in one sentence. 
  • Treatment :  120 pages of script is totally reliant on one single page outlining the film. 
  • Script: Have a polished draft that excites readers.
  • Know your buyer’s genre and style:  Research the producers or companies you want to sell to, and know what genres and styles they have historically made deals for. You wouldn’t pitch a rom-com to a film company known for gritty action films.
  • Extend your successful idea into a franchise:  Think of a few examples of the potential longevity of your brand. For example, the film concept for “Jersey Belle” was turned into a book, “ The Southern Education of a Jersey Girl .” Now, that book is being turned into a series! If you’re  pitching a pilot for a TV show , you have other factors to consider, too.

2. Prepare to Sell Your Pitch — and Yourself

It’s important to not only prepare your concept but also your professional reputation. To make a good first impression and protect your work, make sure you consider the following: 

  • Make a list of producers you want to pitch to :  Investigate what genres of films they’ve produced in the past. 
  • A short synopsis of the script
  • A direct overview of your qualifications and experience as a writer
  • Your phone number
  • Your address
  • Your email address
  • Protect yoursel f:  Register your concept through Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) or get it copyrighted.
  • Contact everyone on your list: Consider mailing hard copies that include a self-addressed stamped envelope so producers can easily respond to you.

3. Pitch Your Idea

Now that you’ve learned the basics, let’s break down each step of the pitch process to ensure you are prepared to give a professional, compelling pitch . For example, the home-invasion drama “ Breaking In ” that was released in 2018 is has a noteworthy pitch that lead to inimitable success .

  • Watch professional pitches:  Watching pitches of existing films is a great way to get a feel of the process. Here’s David Russo with his pitch, “The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle.”

Here’s another great pitch from Mat Whitecross for “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,” which really gets the point across in a concise yet engaging way. 

In Jac Schaweffer’s pitch for her film “TiMER,” you can see the importance of an immediate hook in the first sentence of your pitch.

  • Waiting to be seen/drinking water (1-5 minutes)
  • Hellos and small talk (1-5 minutes)
  • The screenplay pitch (1-20 minutes)
  • Q&As (5-20 minutes)
  • Wrap up (1-2 minutes)
  • Be inviting and establish rapport.
  • Start the pitch by establishing the genre of your film idea.
  • Pitch as quickly and energetically as possible to allows your passion to shine through.
  • Be sure to include a hook , the audience, the most important beats of the film, and the budget (optional).
  • Ask if they have any questions.
  • Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Any mention of politics or religion (unrelated to the plot of the film)
  • Overrunning your time
  • Trying to “oversell” or argue with the buyer’s perspective
  • Being defensive
  • Not answering questions
  • Taking rejection personally 
  • Comparing your screenplay to existing movies

  • Follow up politely:  Don’t be afraid to follow up in a week or so after a meeting. Be sure to thank them for taking their time.

4. Sell Your Idea

So you’ve made your film pitch, and now it’s time to talk numbers. Here are some things to keep in mind when  selling a script in Hollywood . 

  • Know the scope of your budget:  Not only does the film need to be original and sellable, but it needs to have a realistic budget for its genre and the company you’re selling to.
  • Get the rights to anything based on a real event or person:  You don’t want to lose a deal because you didn’t clear the rights of any part of your concept. If it’s going to be mentioned in the pitch, the rights should be obtained  prior to the pitch.
  • Try a pitching service:   Sending your idea through a pitching service is a great way to workshop a pitch pre-sale and put you on a trajectory to talk numbers immediately.
  • Hire an agent or manager:  You’re assumed to be much more marketable if you’re represented. Hiring an agent or manager gives you the right connections and a leg up on the selling front.
  • Become a salesperson:  Once you’re talking numbers, it’s no longer about your story and how great it is. Put on your negotiation hat and be prepared to ask for what you’re worth.
  • Hire an entertainment lawyer:  A legal representative can review any and all contracts before signing a deal. This way, you’re protected if something happens and the other side falls through.
  • Keep your day job: The production of a film takes years, with setbacks and road bumps. Often, you won’t see a payout for three years or more after you sell a film idea. Here is some more information on how much you could make selling your script or idea .

There are  many other steps  you can take to make sure you are informed, prepared, and able to navigate the selling process.

5. Follow Up With Producers 

Too many sales can fall through without a simple follow-up. This reminds the producers that you’re not only still interested in working with them, but you’re also professionally invested in their work. You can follow up with producers by:

  • Sending an email 
  • Calling their professional phone
  • Dropping a postcard in the mail

 Some things to keep in mind when following up include: 

  • Time-frame:  You’ll want to follow up approximately four weeks after your initial inquiry. 
  • Be professional:  You want to be kind and friendly but not pushy. Keep in mind your tone in your follow-up message. 
  • Be prepared to receive no response at all:  Many producers don’t have time to respond to every query. Don’t lose hope just because you don’t get a response right away.

A movie pitch is one of the most important pieces of writing a screenwriter has to master in order to sell a screenplay and build a successful career. It can also be one of the hardest to get right. Don’t let its size fool you. Even if a movie pitch (or TV pitch) is only one page long it can be the key to selling your idea to an executive, producer or screenplay reader .

But often, condensing all their ideas into one page can leave writers tearing their hair out. So what are the key ways into writing a successful movie pitch? We take a look at the 10 important steps to writing a movie pitch, with some significant steps for TV pitches too. Plus we’ll provide some pitch examples to show how it’s done.

So what exactly is a movie pitch? Well, it’s typically a document that seeks to sell your idea, either before or after you’ve written the actual screenplay, to an executive, producer, company or studio. This kind of written pitch is also known as a ‘one pager’.

It’s essentially a summary of:

  • Your controlling idea , its plot and themes
  • The main characters
  • Your intention for the project
  • The creative and market vision for the project, including its genre and potential audience.

The movie pitch can take a number of different forms. It might be a short and sweet pitch in no more than a few sentences. Or it might be a verbal pitch, taking the form of a long interview with an executive for example. The elevator pitch meanwhile is designed for the screenwriter to get across their idea in the briefest of windows.

We’ll primarily be focusing on the kind of movie or TV pitch that takes the form of a ‘one pager’. This is primarily how many writers will be asked to format and send out their pitches, so we think it’s the most useful. However, the below tips are also equally applicable to other forms of pitches, albeit with adjustments made for context, delivery and length.

So why is the movie pitch or TV pitch so important in the arsenal of skills that a screenwriter must have? Well, the pitch is an opportunity for your movie idea or TV show idea to shine through. It’s an essential introduction to you, your writing, your story idea and how you wish to practice and express your craft.

And this is why it’s a document that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Don’t just jot down the essentials of your idea into a word document and think that this is enough. No, a pitch must be a carefully constructed piece of writing.

Moreover, producers, executives or screenplay readers will read hundreds of pitches (sometimes in a very short amount of time). So it’s vital that your pitch is articulate, deliberate and effective. Otherwise, no matter how strong the core of the idea, your pitch won’t leap out, it will be left behind.

Your movie pitch/ TV pitch must grab the reader’s attention and leave them in no uncertain terms as to the next steps that need to be made. It needs to be the beginning of a conversation but disguised in the confidence of a statement. In this, it can be a vital step for a screenwriter to make, whether they’re pitching to producers, a production company, a studio or an agent .

A pitch is the first impression and we all know how important a first impression can be. Whilst in real life first impressions can be wrong and quick, in the film and TV industry, there is rarely the time to do anything else than make a crucial first impression of your idea.

Movie Pitch

So let’s look at the 10 key steps to a great movie pitch. Whilst this is largely intended to for writing a pitch document, its sentiments can be similarly applied to an elevator pitch , 20 minute pitch, pitch meeting or any similar presentation of your TV or film idea.

We’ll delve into the key points for a great movie pitch first, then highlighting some extras that apply particularly and specifically to a TV pitch.

First and foremost, you’ll need to nail your logline. This is the front and centre way in which you convey your movie idea. It will need to be pithy, capture the main narrative engine of your story, demonstrate the protagonist and lure the reader in.

It’s important to note that this isn’t a tagline. It’s not an advertisement, it’s an introduction. It may be brief but it can pack a punch and acts as the headline grabber of your movie pitch.

As you move away from your logline and into your synopsis , you’ll need to give a sense of what the big cinematic moments will be throughout. Think of this like a trailer, which is a compilation and condensing of the story.

As you begin to describe your plot, don’t get lost in the mechanics of the story too much. Keep as much space as you can for the key elements and the key moments that will make your film stand out. These will include:

  • Main characters
  • Setting and context
  • The protagonist’s journey and the changes they undergo
  • Where the story starts and where it might go to and end up
  • The film’s key conflicts

Moreover, what are the big set-pieces, story beats and story hooks? These are the elements of your idea that are going to need to stand out to the reader. Lean on imagery and create a picture in the reader’s mind. This is a sure way to light their own imagination and get them excited about your movie idea.

Movie Pitch Big Moments

Whilst you’re focusing on only conveying the essential, important parts of your story and creating a comprehensive overview of the plot, remember to keep it as brief as you can. This will typically be only a one page document after all.

But conceptually as well you don’t want to bog the reader down in the plot’s every little detail. Make conveying the key story beats your priority. And if this is something you find difficult then this is one of the benefits of writing a movie pitch. It will force you to boil your story down to its core elements, allowing you to see what is most important.

Whilst you shouldn’t lose sight of the details either, as these will make up the script eventually, calcifying what’s most important to your script in terms of getting across the story is vital.

Your pitch is where you’re introducing the producers, executives or screenplay readers to your characters. And in doing so, you want to create a familiarity with them as quickly as possible. Make it so that your characters already feel familiar to the reader midway through the synopsis .

This reflects the way that the audience will experience the film itself. You want to engage the reader in the protagonist ‘s character arc as quickly as you can, within the outline of the first act. Then you want to set up as many effective supporting characters as you can too, in addition to the antagonist .

One shortcut to familiarity is to make it clear, whilst still staying succinct, what makes your characters stand out.

  • If each character has a sentence or adjective that you can ascribe to, what would it be?
  • Remember that the reader is going to be taking in a lot of information in a short amount of time.
  • And so shortcuts are a great way to make sure they maintain engagement across the pitch.

This is also achieved by setting out a clear structure to the character arc, visible within the pitch. Demonstrate where your character starts, where they go and where they end up.

Where did your movie idea come from? Give a little bit of background to why you want to tell this story.

  • Is there anything that connects your story to that of your movie idea?
  • Is there anything that gives you specific insight into the themes, characters or narrative?
  • Why are you drawn to tell the story in the specific way you have outlined?
  • What are your interests as a writer in general?

However, there is no need to go into too much detail or get too personal. In the end, this pitch isn’t about you, it’s about your story. Whilst it is conveying you as a writer, you want your film idea to mostly do this for you. Hide within the pitch, rather than being quite so explicit and overt about presenting yourself.

As well as demonstrating your plot and key characters, you must give a tangible sense of what your script is actually about at its core.

  • What are the themes that audiences will take away from this film?
  • What is this film about and what in this idea distinguishes it from other films?

You need to do this in as efficient a way as possible. If someone were to ask you what the film is about, what would you say?

This is where the discipline of constructing an elevator pitch comes in handy. There needs to be a top-line summary of what your script is about, away from the plot, away from the characters, away from the genre or stylistic flourishes.

Try and move away from the comfort of writing elegant and lengthy sentences describing your thematic aspirations. Instead, imagine yourself in a pitch meeting. Get to the meat of what you are seeking to say with your film in an as simple and easily digestible a way as possible. Be practical and make the reader immediately comprehend why and how your film is saying something distinctive.

Get Out Tone

You’ve established the what and why of your film idea. Now you need to establish the how. This is essential to understanding the feel of your movie as well as its potential marketability.

How is your film going to come across? What is the genre lens through which you wish to tell your story? And moreover, why is this your chosen lens?

Genre is essential to understanding how your film will fit in within the industry landscape. It gives an idea of the potential audience as well as potential production practicalities. This might be essential for producers reading your pitch, for example, helping them understand where they could potentially market your film and how to get the best out of its potential.

It’s crucial to convey tone too, as this is the way in which your film will be received.

  • And you needn’t do this by explicitly stating what the tone and genre are within the movie pitch itself.
  • Although a sentence highlighting the style you intend for your story is always helpful and clarifying.
  • But moreover, you should interrogate as much as possible how you can convey these elements within the synopsis itself.
  • What about the way your story is told intrinsically reveals the tone and genre? For example, is it fulfilling certain expected genre expectations?

You need to see your synopsis through this lens. And doing so will further strengthen your concept and its execution.

References to other movies/ TV shows can be very helpful in picturing your movie. But they have to be more than just hollow or stylistic references. They have to actually reveal something about your story and how you want it to be seen.

Saying that your film is X meets Y or like a combination of X and Y, can be a great way of summarising the inherent appeal and potential of your project. However, don’t do this only to make your film sound sexy and exciting, combining two great films to make another potential great film. Two plus two does not equal four in this case.

The best time to make references, particularly if combining them together, is to show how your movie idea is filling a gap. Here, you demonstrate that there is a precedent for the kind of film you’re seeking to tell but that there is nothing exactly quite like it. It’s only in the combination of other examples that you can express the idiosyncrasy of your movie idea.

Reading-a-Movie-Pitch

Who is reading your pitch? Whoever it is is likely to be busy and reading many other pitches that day or week. So with this in mind, you need to try as hard as you can to create objectivity and clearly and succinctly convey your ideas to the intended audience without getting too bogged down in expressing every angle of your vision.

This is another time when it can be helpful to envision yourself in a pitch meeting with a specific audience or individual. It’s not particularly helpful to see a blank void at the other end of your movie pitch. Instead, think about how your pitch will be received.

Try and put yourself in the shoes of the person reading your document. This will only leave you wanting to make the pitch easy to read and understand as well as making it as exciting as you can.

Don’t tailor your pitch or try and second guess what the reader will want. But by balancing efficiency and effectiveness with distinction and idiosyncrasy you will make your pitch easy and engaging to read, creating a strong impression overall.

The purpose of a movie pitch above everything else is to leave the reader wanting to read the screenplay you have just pitched, whether you’ve already written it or not. And part of doing this is leaving them wanting more.

You want to leave the reader with a sense of unfinished business. Prepare them for a rich and engaging story and leave them with the sense that they haven’t quite gotten the full bite out of this meal that they potentially could.

However, be careful not to mistake being elusive and tantalising with vague. You must convey your story clearly and distinctly, giving a strong picture of how your film will look, feel and what exactly it will consist of for the duration of its runtime.

Some key ways to achieve this balance of leaving them wanting more and not being too elusive is to ask questions. Again, you want to do this confidently and not give the impression you don’t know the answers to these questions and that you need help.

But by asking questions, you ignite the search for an answer in the reader. A search that can only be answered by the execution, realisation and delivery of your screenplay.

Many of the same rules apply to writing a TV pitch as they do a movie pitch. However, there are some key differences and important elements to consider.

Differing from movies, TV series need a justification for their form. They need a solid reason for unfolding over a longer period of time, something inherent in the concept. And you need to make what this is clear in your pitch.

  • What is the question at the heart of your series which will never quite be answered (until the conclusion) and consequently drive the series?
  • What is the push and pull of the series, the thing that the characters want and will continually struggle to get?

The reader needs to get a sense of what will make this series run and run. Even if it’s a limited series pitch, the idea needs to feel that it has depth and scope. How much potential is there in the story world? And what will this story world center around throughout the series?

A TV series needs to have a drive, something to continually push it forward. This is the engine, the dramatic question at the heart of the concept. For example…

  • In Breaking Bad , Walter White’s unquenchable quest for power (initially masquerading as a quest for money) drives the series.
  • In Succession , the Roy children continually seek their father’s approval, in one way or another. It’s something they’ll never get, such is Logan Roy’s character and so, therefore, the series could potentially go on forever.

Similarly, in your TV pitch, you need to demonstrate how the characters can and will carry the series. Show that your characters have a depth and three-dimensionality that only a series can explore. There must be visible layers to potentially unwrap.

  • What are the characters’ motivations, aims, flaws?
  • And is the quest to potentially resolve these enough to carry a series?
  • How will the character arc develop and change throughout the series? Is there potential for a mighty rise and fall?
  • Is there reward in seeing how the character deals with peaks and troughs? How strong or weak is the character?

This primarily applies to the protagonist . But it can be stretched out to the supporting characters too, particularly in relation to their dynamic with the protagonist .

For example, in The Sopranos , it’s clear from the outset that the dynamic between the different family members in relation to Tony has a lot of potential to explore.

  • Carmella is the mob boss wife struggling to deal with her relation to Tony’s work, as well as struggling with Tony’s explosive personality, infidelities and lifestyle.
  • Meadow, Tony’s daughter, is both the apple of Tony’s eye but also doesn’t shy away from questioning the truth of his work.
  • Anthony, Tony’s son, irks Tony both in the way that he seems to mirror his younger self but in the way he is errant and unfocused.

These dynamics reach peaks and troughs throughout the series. But they’re always there rumbling on in the background as supporting narratives. And they of course compliment the primary series character arc, focused around Tony’s never-ending struggle for mental contentment and his attempt to control the crime family he’s in charge of.

Whilst the setting and story world is important in movies, it’s much more crucial to a TV series concept. It’s another element of the idea that will convey how much depth and reach the series could have.

  • How much is there for a potential series to mine in the world?
  • How three-dimensional and fleshed out is the world?
  • And is this enough to drive many series, or enough to stand at the forefront of a limited series?

For example, in a limited series (also known as mini-series), the context and story world might be so rich that it serves as one of the series’ main themes. And you’ll notice that a lot of limited series are based on true stories for this reason.

  • Take Band of Brothers , The People v. O.J. Simpson or John Adams for example.
  • These are all series that take have the historical context at the forefront of the series’ themes. They have to, such is the weight of this context.
  • So in your TV pitch, make this clear. Justify and argue for why your context is important and what it has to say about universal, timeless themes.

For continuing series, take Game of Thrones as the perfect example…

  • The richness and scope of the story world is such that not only was there enough for eight seasons, with a very large ensemble of characters, but there is enough for spinoffs, fan theories and endless lore based around just the world.

So in your TV pitch, no matter how large the scope of your story world, lean into its richness as much as possible. Demonstrate why it is unique and distinctive and give a hint of how much there is to explore.

You don’t have to go into great detail at this point or in a short pitch, but you need to convey the ability of your story to carry future series. This is a key part of how to sell your series to those within the industry – conveying how much there is a vision for the series beyond its first.

It goes without saying that industry investment in your idea is more likely if you demonstrate there will be a greater return on their investment. And multiple series is what a lot of studios, production companies or producers will be looking for as there are longer term gains to be had.

Don’t do this section by halves, however, no matter how brief it may be. You might only be writing a sentence or two about the potential for series 2 or 3. But it’s important to do the work outside these two sentences, making sure there is a weight there to be filtered through.

  • You don’t want to give some vague sense of how the series could develop, based around some hazy idea of the plot line.
  • Instead, you want to succinctly sum up how the series’ main tenets will develop from series to series.

How will the stakes escalate? How will the protagonist ‘s journey intensify?

Break down your series development into concrete steps and show why you will need more than one series to truly, fully explore the depth of your characters, world and themes.

So what does a movie pitch and TV pitch look like? Well, there’s no need to be strictly prescriptive here. But your pitch should be broadly made up of the following simple steps.

The themes/writer’s statement section will be where you might include how you came to write this idea, why you want to tell it, your aspirations for the project and a little about its intended tone, style and audience. If you’ve managed to keep your synopsis short enough, you’ll have this luxury.

The TV pitch will follow much the same formula, with a few differences.

Series Outline /Future Series:

In the series outline /future series section, you will outline the overall vision for the series and how it might develop after the first season. This is where you might highlight the series engine and the themes or intention of the series overall. Again, this is a luxury that you can afford yourself by achieving a succinct synopsis .

A movie pitch is a document that seeks to sell your idea, either before or after you’ve written the actual screenplay, to an executive, producer, company or studio. This kind of written pitch is also known as a ‘one pager’.

A film pitch deck is the must-have overview of your film or movie, and how you plan on making it. No need to be reading your script for this, since it is a short presentation document that is used to showcase a film or video project to investors, distributors, agents, and other creatives who might be interested in your project.

The deck typically represents a recap of the project, information about the filmmakers, the storyline, the production company, the proposed budget or financial projections, and other key details, all visually displayed – similar to a look book. 

What Is The Purpose Of a Film Pitch Deck?

As you probably already know, the purpose of this type of pitch deck is to show potential investors and partners why they should fund your project.

You ideally want to convey an overview of the film project, its financial requirements, and prospect its potential return on investment financing.

This will also help them get to know more about what you’re trying to accomplish with their money, so they’re more likely to aim to support it and do the film financing, making it easier for you to feature films.

Shortly, it is a presentation that entrepreneurs make to gain funding for the project by convincing sponsors that the project is a good investment, presenting them with everything they need to know to accomplish that.

A film pitch deck template can be a helpful tool for filmmakers who are looking to raise money for their projects. It can provide a structure for the presentation and help ensure that all of the important information is included.

Moviemakers can get templates for film pitch decks from several different sources.

There are many different types of film pitch decks, but most follow a similar outline.

However, a deck can always be modified to meet the unique requirements of each project.

These decks can be created using various software programs or online models.

Some popular options include online template databases, such as Canva, and software programs like PowerPoint.

You can find tons of templates on sites like Canva, Slidesgo and Google Slides, but none of them will be in line of the brand you represent. What will happen is you’ll need to spend hours adjusting these templates to fit your brand guidelines. There’s a better way. My clients have used my written template to craft a stellar pitch in half the time and designed decks that secured their investments.

Also, you need to able to narrate your deck efficiently, just like Steve did. 2018 psychological thriller “Don’t Go” received funding only a few weeks following the creation of its feature pitch. To aid in obtaining finance for the project, the director and producer recruited a graphic designer to create this pitch deck. The designer discusses creating the pitch deck and some of the ideas that went into it in the mentioned link. This deck features excellent cinematic images that give you an accurate feel of the movie. It serves as a good illustration of the kinds of details pitch decks frequently include.

This pitch deck does a fantastic job of describing the show’s visual environment and its essential components. It gives us a glimpse into the characters, explains the plot of the show, and is just beautiful to look at! Since the show is animated, it seems sensible that the pitch deck is visually heavy. Live-action pitches should completely engulf the reader in a visual experience. Pitch decks should not have a lot of text. Let the graphics take the lead in a pitch deck!

How to Pitch Your Film: A Step-By-Step Breakdown

The road to getting a film off the ground is never straight and narrow, especially if you’re starting at the bottom. What if you could pitch your film in exactly the right way to exactly the right people?

At the SXSW 2017 , a group of producers, financiers, and distributors sat down on the Pitch, Package, Produce panel to explain the process of successfully pitching your film with those goals in mind. (For more, here are some  pointers on the psychology of pitching .)

"Don’t say you have the next  Jurassic Park , a mega hit, or the next  Insidious , which came out of nowhere, and can’t be replicated. You want to be realistic."

From industry veterans Tiffany Boyle (Ramo Law PC), Jessica Freeborn (Pretty____Ideas), Stefan Nowicki ( Sundial Pictures ), and Tyler MacIntyre ( Tragedy Girls ), here's a breakdown of the most important steps in the pitch process. 

Step 1: Research

Whether you are looking to pitch to a producer, distributor, or financier, the first step is always finding out who is the best fit. That means researching who is in the business of aligning themselves with films that are similar to your own.

"What do I look for from a pitch? Honestly, it’s not about what I like personally," said Freeborn. "It’s whether or not it fits with our mandate. For example, don’t pitch a horror film to Focus Features—they do awards-worthy films. The first part is knowing who you are pitching and what they are looking for."

According to the panelists, you should certainly tweak your presentation to fit who you are pitching to—but do so within reason. "Don’t think about forcing yourself to do a project just because [a company] might be interested in it," said MacIntyre. "Think about it as having passion projects ready to get made, and who might make it. I do horror movies between $2-5 million, for example. There was a while where I was pitching, and people would ask, 'Do you have any haunted house movies?' It was because The Conjuring just came out. I didn’t mind. I find ways to explain projects I’m passionate about in terms of recent successes."

Step 2: Pitch meeting

Networking , cold emailing, pitch fests , and events...whatever you have to do, start doing it. If you have an agent , manager, or lawyer , financiers and distributors should talk to these reps. If you don’t, get creative.

"Networking is the best place to start," said Boyle. "Producer networking events, in particular. There are platforms like Stage 32 that have pitch events where you can be heard by industry, or IFP Film Week, or Women in Film. There are lots of places you can look into."

"Definitely don’t include your script in the cold email."

What about cold emails and unsolicited requests? "I respond to emails all the time, because we’re a growing company," said Freeborn. "But many others don’t. If you’re going to do a cold email, be sure to include a short bio, a sense of the project or content you’re focused on, as well as if anyone is attached. Definitely don’t include your script in the cold email, but do mention that you can send it over if they’re interested in reading more."

Step 3: Comp films

Comp films are films that are comparable to yours in terms of marketing and success. But don't make the common mistake of comparing your film to another film creatively—unless you are pitching to a producer, you want to pull comps from a business standpoint.

"Someone you pitch to may like your project, but they still need to sell it up the ladder [in the company]," said Freeborn. "Start by making 10 comparable films. Don’t say you have the next Jurassic Park , a mega hit, or the next Insidious , which came out of nowhere, and can’t be replicated. You want to be realistic, if not conservative, because you don’t want to sound cocky or delusional. We use comps to find how much money to give you, so pick relatively recent films that you think your film could emulate in terms of success."

Step 4: Find a champion

If you had a champion and some buzz, you’d be that much more likely to get a pitch meeting. But what if you have nothing?

According to the panelists, you can try to get an actor or director on board who can bring some credibility to the project. Otherwise, film festival programmers who champion your work are your best bet.

"Nobody want to be the first in the project," said Boyle. "Everyone wants to get on a train that’s moving. Most actors will get in with money. If you haven’t done anything before, you may have to put in significant money. Or maybe try getting an actor on as a producer, if she or he can get excited about the project. Otherwise, look for [programmers at] Sundance and SXSW."

Step 5: Proof of concept

How useful is it to have a short that shows off your feature idea? It depends if you can pull it off the short film with your current resources.

"A proof of concept can be amazing, like Whiplash ," said McIntyre. "But if it didn’t come out exactly the right way, it can backfire. Alternately, sometimes you can use a short to post online, and if have a lot of hits, you show that there is interest in the idea."

Step 6: Over-prepare your pitch materials

According to the panelists, these are the materials you should prepare for your pitch, whether you incorporate them into the presentation or not:

  • Copy of the Script/IP content
  • Show Bible or Deck (For TV, this includes character, episode, and season breakdown.)
  • Lookbook (Creates the tone and feel. If it’s a drama for example, the lookbook can help explain if it’s a gritty drama or an eerie drama. Here’s where you can include creative comps.)
  • Bios of Producer & Other Key Crew
  • Financing already in place
  • Cast, if attached
  • Director, if attached
  • Contact Info

Step 6: Be personable during the pitch

Whether you’re giving your pitch in person, on the phone, or even over email, you can ruin your own by not being personable. You may be nervous, but try to be friendly!

"You want to be fun, friendly, charming," said Freeborn. "You want people to want to work with you. Life is short—if we don’t want to work with you, we won’t."

Nowicki added, "When in doubt, just show your enthusiasm and you passion."

Step 7: Follow up politely

According to panelists, a small company may take three to four weeks to read your script and materials (assuming they’ve asked to see them). A bigger company may take up to six months. Regardless, always stay polite, as a pass on this project may not mean you won’t get a greenlight on something else in the future.

"After that initial period, [following up on] a bi-weekly basis is okay," said Boyle. "If you don’t want to pester the person, ask them to let you know when to check in next. By all means, keep me filled in on your career or next project. If you need an answer, just politely say, 'We’d love an answer by such and such a date, as we have a few offers.'"

Finally, remember that very few pitches are picked up by distributors and financiers. Know that rejection is part of the process. Keep at it! When one door closes, another opens .

Celebrate Your Silly Comedy Shorts With Show&Tell's 10th Anniversary

We chat with show&tell co-founder sethward about their backyard comedy spectacular..

Looking for the hippest place in town to premier your comedy short film, pilot, sketch, etcetera, etcetera? Well, oh boy, do we have a place for you in a special magical backyard.

The festival in question vaguely mentioned in that last sentence you just read is called Show&Tell: Screening Spectacular. Started by comic actors Sethward and Kyle Helf, Show&Tell is a comedy filmmakers haven to premier their comedy projects to a community of other comedy filmmakers and fans alike. The spirit of Show&Tell—a monthly outing—is extremely filmmaker friendly, encouraging artists to showcase their silliest, weirdest stuff. It's always a great time, and, considering it's celebrating it's 10th B-day today, extremely successful.

The main talent behind the fest is Sethward—an extremely funny, talented filmmaker most widely known for his absurdist animal auditions on America's Got Talent (very much worth your time if you aren't familiar). He was kind enough to chat with us about the history of Show&Tell, as well as comedy and filmmaker-forward ethos.

So what is Show&Tell, Huh?

"Show&Tell [Screening Spectacular] started in 2014 where [Kyle Helf] were discussing this concept of showing your art and your films to people, but not having a place that we felt like it was open for us to put up whatever. There were a couple of screenings in LA at that time that were incredibly popular for indie filmmakers and creatives. We do comedy shorts, so that's a very specific type of filmmaker.

As comedy filmmakers, we make sketches, short films, commercials—we make every kind of video. We sometimes screen specs, things that never get picked up. It's a very wide range of media, but then also very small because the genre is consistently comedy.

It was hard to find a screening option for straight comedy filmmaking. There was Channel 101, but that was very specifically pilots. I didn't always want to make a five minute pilot. There were other screenings [that would always ask], "what's a sketches?" There wasn't really good place to screen sketches. Film festivals don't want you to put up your internet videos. There wasn't really a place that we felt like we could gather people and show [comedy videos] in that community and fellowship—what are you up to? What are we up to? Kyle and I missed that from college.

We had essentially taken a show that was on the TV channel that the school was in charge of called TV 32. It was like a broadcast-cable thing. We picked up, there's a show called the Ram Gum Show, and we were playing with that concept. When we finished an episode that we really liked there was no input. There's no congratulations, there's no constructive criticism. There was nothing.

So when we were at school we started having these release parties and we would try to gather a lot of people. By the time it was our senior year, we'd pack out the auditorium and we would screen all of our sketches. It was a huge to-do, and it was so fun, and we were like, how do we do that in the real world? It's low stakes because it's just your friends, it's your crew. We want to have these little premier parties for your smaller projects. And some of them are bigger projects you've spent years working on, but you have nowhere to release.

So we started doing Show&Tell and it felt there was a larger community of people. There's something more that we can celebrate from finishing a project and sharing it. Now for the past 10 years we've been gathering together. You've finished that project that you said it was going to be so hard to finish and you did it. I can't believe you finished it. It's amazing. And I love it. It's one of my favorite things to do every month."

How to Submit to Show&Tell

"Literally anyone can submit. We have a form on our website where it's just a simple Google Doc where you send in an unlisted link. We had to set up a parameter for Show&Tell that's what are you up to now? What have you just finished recently? And it is comedy. So our three rules are that you have to be there to present your video.

So we don't screen anything that has the creators living in another country or another town, and it's got to be comedy and it can't be published yet. So it's this environment that I just finished this, I'm about to release it into the world. What are your thoughts? What do you guys think? And it gives you the opportunity to maybe analyze the audience response, change a few things, or leave it the same or add some things. It's an amazing place for people to get input afterwards. We hang out and talk about each other's stuff, what we've been going on.

The curation process has gotten much more difficult over the years because of more people knowing about it. And friends, I mean, when we were in the backyard in the beginning it was like, I'm begging people, please don't put it online yet. Put it on Show&Tell first.

At this point, we're having to be a bit more selective in what we put in."

"I'm a big deadline guy, so if I don't have a hard deadline, then I don't do nothing—not finishing it. Show&Tell was this hard deadline that I better have something to show these people in my backyard in a few days. It forced me to make a video every single month, at least. Some of those Show&Tells—when it was so new and we were excited—I was putting up three to four videos every month.

It's gotten to the point where I haven't made any larger projects. I've never made a feature film, and I kind of blame it on Show&Tell a little bit because by the time I finish a project for Show&Tell, I have to start making a new project for the next month since it's every single month. I don't have this larger arc accomplished.

But I'm figuring that. We play a lot of different stuff. So I could technically cut up every scene of this feature in parts of an episodic journey and play it once a month."

The Art of Collaboration in Absurdist Costuming

"I get into trouble with a lot of my work where I'm covered in slime, or I'm in a costume that's currently trying to kill me, and then I'm in the middle of filming and being like, oh yeah, I need to direct this so that it's what I want, or I need to make sure that the DP is getting the right shots, but I can't move.

Literally yesterday, I'm filming a video that we're going to put up a Show&Tell, but I'm covered in snot, right? I'm a snot genie, and I couldn't move because it was so slippery that if I were to walk over to Nate, who's shooting the film, I would've covered his camera in slime. Secondly, I would've put him in danger by getting slime over the place. So I couldn't really see the monitor. I have to trust.

I call it editor brain where I have been editing for days or I'm stuck on a computer, I'm writing emails and stuff, and then I get out and I have to perform. And you really do have to readjust. You need to center yourself because you get too technical. And so I trust the people that I work with. I try to get people to work with that I trust to help co-direct.

So every project I've ever done is a community effort. There's not at any point in my life where somebody will give a note on set and I'll be like, "excuse you. Stay in your lane. I'm the director here." I would never in a million years. I understand the concept of too many cooks in the kitchen, but I need it. I need more cooks for what I'm making and cooking. Sometimes I literally just need appendages. I'm in a worm costume or something. I literally can't touch stuff.

"Specifically, for filmmakers that do comedy, you can't get tied up. And by the way, I'm no person to give advice. I have no status as professional comedy filmmaker. But from my years of doing comedy filmmaking, the biggest lesson that I've ever learned is that you have to put the comedy first.

Specifically when I say comedy, I say the fun and the silliness. And if you can't have fun, at least force the silly because then you will then have fun. And because that's the only thing that matters in comedy, specifically comedy filmmaking, your film can look amazing. It can sound great. You can have an awesome set or a beautiful costume, whatever it is to help support the joke, that's fine. But truly it doesn't matter if it's not obvious to the viewer that you are having the funnest time making it, you're having the silliest moment with your friends.

In my opinion, that's the absolute only thing that matters when you're making a comedy video. That being said, make sure that it comes first. I've failed at this many times where I'm like, I want it to look this way, I want the aesthetic and it needs to be a genre bending, blah, blah, blah.

The point of it is that you're making and creating something with your friends and your community, and I think Show&Tell is a great way to prove that, because it doesn't cost money to submit. It doesn't cost money to come to it. It's very low stakes. We're in a backyard. It's an outdoor screening. The reason why we're getting together is to laugh at the moment that we remembered you having so much fun and getting to relive that vicariously through other people, and being able to relive that by watching that video in a community. That's the whole point of what we're doing,—to share that stupid moment that we have together.
