Vattam Movie Review: A shoddy hyperlink drama that runs around in circles

Director Kamalakannan's Vattam has a good-looking Sibi Sathyaraj in his most blitheful role, extensive drone shots of scenic Coimbatore, and a gorgeous car. These are probably the only few good things I will remember from this majorly disappointing piece of work. It doesn't take long for us to realise that this 'hyperlink thriller' has tracks that aren't actually related to each other and their point of convergence is so contrived that it leaves us furious and annoyed, instead of feeling amused.

Mano (Sibi) decides to get dead drunk on the eve of his ex-girlfriend's  (Athulya) wedding but gets thrown out of the wine shop. One might expect him to gatecrash the reception, considering he isn't a man of great values and on top of everything, he got cheated. But, he goes on to kidnap a random businessman named Gautham (Vamsi Krishna) he bumps into and eventually swaps Gautham's wife Parvathy (Andrea) as the hostage. Well, the randomness doesn't end there. Parvathy and Mano start arguing about true love, security in life, chauvinism, and feminism in the most inorganic, dramatic way possible. When I say 'drama' it is clearly not an exaggeration as Andrea switches to 'thooya tamizh' often to stress a point to her kidnapper! Oh, there is also a side-track involving a bunch of laid-off IT people, who are also in the mood for a kidnap. But their story barely develops as the maker himself chooses to focus only on the confused Parvathy-Mano conversation and the mundane flashback love story of Mano. Thinking again, the title Vattam feels largely like a self-mockery by the makers of the film, as the story leads nowhere and only goes around in 'circles'.

The film wouldn't have been such a tough watch if director Kamalakannan had decided to have fun with the limited story and write characters that don't take themselves seriously.  But what is in the offering is just the opposite. Almost all the characters firmly believe that they are crusaders of social justice, but all they do is succumb to the evil they are posing to fight against.

Why doesn't Andrea take a cleverer detour and escape even when she had the car under her control? How does Gautham's family remain asleep all the while during the kidnap episode? Why doesn't he try getting help from the police, especially when he knows the location of the kidnapper? If one had to complain about the loopholes in the plot, then it would potentially turn into a bigger rant session than the ones we see on screen. 

Sibiraj's Mano is a man who is keen on getting his closures. Be it a relationship or a simple conversation, he gets furious when he is left in the dark. But I guess, we the audience have more reasons to be enraged than Mano, as the whys and hows on our end clearly outweigh his struggles.

Vattam Movie Review: A taut thriller that keeps you engaged till the end

What stands out is that Vattam is hardly boring. This Sibi Sathyaraj-starrer that streams on Disney+Hotstar is worth watching.

Plot: An unhappy man decides to solve his problems after a breakup. Amid a kidnapping and a distressed couple, his situation worsens.

Review: As the title suggests, the film is about the circle of life. Vattam opens with a bunch of friends plotting to kidnap the only deaf and mute son of their boss, who fired them. In parallel, you get to know more about Mano (Sibi Sathyaraj), Parvathi (Andrea Jeremiah), and her husband Gautham (Vamsi Krishna). In the beginning, Vattam is a bit erratic. You don't understand why certain things happen the way it happens on the screen, but the curiosity of wanting to see where the plot was headed got the better of me! Once the film establishes the tone for its characters and a few others, it kicks off.

Mano isn't the kind of guy who doesn’t exactly worry or even think about the consequences of his deeds. But, that's not what it is. Vattam is a sincere effort at storytelling that makes the desired impact due to effective presentation. What adds value to the story of Vattam is Kamalakannan's clarity on the plot, and what he's trying to convey. Not a word, not a pause, not a glance, not a sigh feels out of place or unnecessary in the film. The dialogues stand out. It is a credit to the writing team that the screenplay allows for solid moments to spring out at the viewer. At some point, you find yourself thinking along with the characters. It's the second half that's meaty. That’s where Vattam scores.

The film depicts an interesting battle between luck and determination, chance and karma. Vattam comes from a team that knows how to narrate a story in almost two hours. At the end of the day, that matters a great deal. The film hits you like a punch in the gut because the director opts not to loosen the narrative threads until the final moment. The characters reel you into their story and you're invested enough in their life to desperately want to know what happens next. There are a few edge-of-the-seat moments that work quite well. The situational humour, where Sibi asks Andrea "Oo solriya Oo Oo solriya", is a hoot. The realistic feel of the film keeps you grounded.

Sibi Sathyaraj gets the laidback attitude right in many of the scenes, and it's evident he has had fun doing them. Andrea Jeremiah, on the other hand, delivers a credible performance—perhaps the most credible of the lot—when she plays the wife as a real person and not the cliche that we have come to see in most movies these days. Scenes involving Andrea and Sibi penetrate your consciousness, and this is easily one of Vattam's plus points.

Interesting shifts in perspectives occur throughout Vattam. The film undoubtedly compels you to think about patriarchy, redemption, conscience, reality and so on. Nothing is strained or contrived in the script. With subtle lighting, unobtrusive camera work that lets you sink into the story, and a pulsating background score, Vattam works because it’s not preachy.

Verdict: Vattam is not a great film by any standards, but it’s well intended and it goes about its job with sincerity, and sometimes, just sometimes, that’s enough.

முதல் பார்வை | வட்டம் - வசனத் தெறிப்புகளுடன் த்ரில் அனுபவம் தரும் ‘முயற்சி’

வர்க்க அரசியல், ஆணாதிக்கப் போக்கு என சமூக அக்கறைக் கருத்தாக்கங்களுடன் த்ரில் சினிமா அனுபவத்தைத் தர முற்பட்ட படம்தான் டிஸ்னி ப்ளஸ் ஹாட்ஸ்டாரில் வெளியாகியுள்ள ‘வட்டம்’.

4 பேர் கொண்ட அமெர்ச்சூர் கும்பல் ஒரு மாற்றுத் திறன் சிறுவனை கடத்திவிட்டு அவரது தந்தையிடம் பணம் கேட்டு மிரட்டுகிறது. இதற்கு அப்படியே மற்றொருபுறம், தன் மனைவியின் பிறந்தநாளைக் கொண்டாட ஆவலுடன் வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றுகொண்டிருக்கும் ஒருவர் துப்பாக்கி முனையில் மிரட்டப்படுகிறார். இந்த இரண்டு சம்பவங்களுக்கும் பொதுவான புள்ளியான பணத்ததைச் சுற்றி வரையப்படும் வட்டத்தில் ஓர் இரவில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்களின் தொகுப்பு 'வட்டம்'.

ஸ்ரீநிவாஸ் கவிநாயகத்தின் எழுத்தை 'மதுபானக்கடை' படத்தின் மூலம் பரவலாக அறியப்பட்ட கமலக்ககண்ணன் படமாக்கியிருக்கிறார். ஓர் இரவில் கோயம்புத்தூரில் நடக்கும் இருவேறு சம்பவங்கள் இறுதியில் ஒரு புள்ளியில் இணைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. சின்ன பட்ஜெட்டில் நிறைவான சினிமா தரும் முயற்சி பாராட்டுக்குரியது. ஆனால், நோக்கம் மட்டுமே போதுமானதா என்ற கேள்வி எழாமல் இல்லை.

வர்க்கம், அதிகாரம் இந்த இரண்டு பிரச்சினைகளையும் இருவேறு கதைகள் மூலம் சொல்ல முயற்சித்திருக்கிறார்கள். கரோனா காலத்தில் எல்லா பணியிடங்களிலிருந்து ஊழியர்கள் தூக்கியடிக்கப்பட்ட நிலையில், ஐடி துறையிலும் நிறைய பேர் வேலையிலிருந்து துரத்தப்பட்டார்கள். கூடவே, ஒரு தொழிலாளியின் இறப்பை கார்ப்பரேட் முதலாளித்துவம் அணுகும் விதம் குறித்த பார்வையும் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.

'அதிகாரம், பணம் இந்த இரண்டும் தான் ஒரு பெண்ணுக்கு பாதுகாப்பை கொடுக்கும்' என படத்தில் ஒரு வசனம் வருகிறது. அது எப்படி என நாம் சிந்திக்கும் நேரத்தில் அதற்கான நியாயத்தையும் படத்தில் பதிவு செய்ய முனைந்திருக்கிறார்கள். அதையொட்டி 'இப்போ கூட உன்கிட்ட இருந்து என்ன காப்பாத்துனது கௌதம் இல்ல. பணம் தான்' என ஆன்ட்ரியா பேசும் வசனம் மிகவும் ஆழமானது. உண்மையில் ஓர் ஆண் தரமுடியாத பாதுகாப்பை பணம் கொடுத்துவிடுகிறது என்ற வாதம் இங்கே முக்கிய விவாதத்துக்குரியது.

பெண்ணுக்கான பொருளாதார சுதந்திரத்திற்கான தேவையை விளக்கும் இடங்கள் கவனிக்க வைக்கின்றன. அதேபோல அதிகாரமோ, பணமோ பிடுங்கப்பட்ட நிலையில், ஒரு பெண் வேறு வழியின்றி ஆணை நம்பியே இருக்க வேண்டிய சூழலும் இன்னமும் மாறாமல் இருப்பதை படம் பதிவு செய்கிறது. அந்த வகையில் படம் பேசும் கருத்தியல் ரீதியான பல நுணுக்கமான விஷயங்கள் வரவேற்க வேண்டியவை.

ஆனால், அதை திரைக்கதையாக்கிய விதத்தில் இன்னும் கூடுதல் கவனம் கொண்டிருக்கலாம் என தோன்றுகிறது. படம் தொடங்கியதிலிருந்து நடக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் நம்மை குழப்பத்திலும், ஒரு கட்டத்தில் அதே நீடிப்பதால் அயற்சியையும் தருகின்றன. சிபிராஜின் உத்தரவுகளுக்கு வம்சி கிருஷ்ணா கீழ்படிவது செயற்கைத்தன்மையை உருவாக்கிவிடுகிறது. தவிர, காதல் காட்சிகள், அதற்கான பாடல்களும் கதையொட்டத்திலிருந்து நம்மை விலக்கி விடுகின்றன. ஐடி துறையில் நடக்கும் வேலையிழப்பும், வலிகளையும் வார்த்தைகளைத்தாண்டி காட்சிகள் மூலம் கடத்தியிருந்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்களுக்கு படம் இன்னும் கூடுதலாக கனெக்ட் ஆகியிருக்கும்.

சிபிராஜ் யதார்த்தமான நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தியிருந்தார். ஆனால், சில இடங்களில் சத்யராஜின் உடல்மொழியும், குரலும் அவரிடமிருந்து விலகிச்செல்ல மறுப்பதை உணர முடிகிறது. ஆன்ட்ரியா தெறிக்கும் வசனங்களுடன் அழுத்தமான நடிப்பையும், அதுல்யா ரவி சில காட்சிகள் வந்தாலும் தேர்ந்த நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளனர்.

பயம், பதற்றம், மனமாற்றம் என அத்தனையையும் காட்சிகளுக்கு தக்கவாறு கடத்துவதில் வம்சி கிருஷ்ணாவின் நடிப்பு கவனம் பெறுகிறது. பிரசன்னா பாலசந்திரன் கொங்குவட்டார மொழியிலும், நடிப்பிலும் மிரட்டுகிறார். தவிர பாலசரவணன், ரேணுகா, உள்ளிட்ட பலரும் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கு நியாயம் சேர்த்துள்ளனர்.

மாதேஷ் மாணிக்கத்தின் ஒளிப்பதிவில் இரவுக்காட்சிகள் கோவையை இன்னும் அழகாக்கி கொடுக்கின்றன. நிவாஸ் கே பிரசன்னாவின் பின்னணி இசையில் 'அற்ப மானிடப் பதரே' பாடல் கவனம் பெறுகிறது. எடிட்டர் ரூபன் காதல் காட்சிகளில் கருணை காட்டாமல் தூக்கியிருக்கலாம்.

மொத்தத்தில், படம் ஆணாதிக்க, முதலாளித்துவ சிந்தனை வட்டத்தில் அடைப்பட்டு கிடப்பவர்கள், அந்த வட்டத்திலிருந்து வெளியேற கோரும் இந்த வட்டம் சொல்லவரும் கருத்துக்காக பார்க்கலாம்.

வேலையை விட்டு நீக்கப்பட்ட நான்கு ஐ.டி இளைஞர்கள் தங்கள் முதலாளியின் மகனைக் கடத்துவதற்குத் திட்டமிடுகிறார்கள். மறுபக்கம் ‘குடியே கடமை' என போதையில் உழலும் சிபி சத்யராஜ் தொழிலதிபரான வம்சியைத் துப்பாக்கி முனையில் கடத்துகிறார். சிபி சத்யராஜ் யார், அவர் ஏன் வம்சியைக் கடத்தவேண்டும் என்ற கேள்விகளுக்கு ஒன்றன்பின் ஒன்றாக பதில் சொல்லி, அது முந்தைய கடத்தலோடு இணையும் முடிச்சை அவிழ்த்து, இறுதியாய் மெசேஜ் சொல்லி முடிகிறது படம்.

சிபி சத்யராஜுக்கு அலட்டல், ஆர்ப்பாட்ட மில்லாத சிம்பிளான கதாபாத்திரம். கடத்தல் காட்சிகளில்கூட பதற்றம் தேவைப்பட்டிராத ரிலாக்ஸான ரோலை எளிதாகக் கையாண்டிருக்கிறார். ஒருசில காட்சிகளே என்றாலும் ஆண்ட்ரியாவின் கதாபாத்திரமும் நடிப்பும் அழுத்தம். மற்றொரு நாயகியான அதுல்யா நடிப்பில் போகவேண்டிய தூரம் இன்னும் அதிகம். வம்சி கிருஷ்ணா, சசி, பால சரவணன், சைத்ரா ரெட்டி, பிரசன்னா பாலச்சந்திரன் என ஏகப்பட்ட நடிகர்கள் என்றாலும் சசி மட்டுமே கூட்டத்தில் தனித்துத் தெரிகிறார்.

Vattam Movie Review

Even low budget films today have the luxury of playing with a range of angles to shoot from. Especially the aerial shots. Vattam is the latest low budget drama in Tamil cinema to have exploited that luxury extensively. The film is about a man who is trying to deal with his breakup but gets entangled in a kidnapping which further deepens his tragic situation. Actor Sibiraj who was last seen in the mythological thriller Maayon is back on screens with his hyperlink action movie Vattam . Actress Andrea Jeremiah has essayed the female lead part. Writer Shrinivas Kaviinayam has penned the script. Director Kamalakannan has helmed the film. So, how has the hyperlink action drama Vattam come out? Will it help establish a bankable lead hero image for actor Sibiraj and rejuvenate actress Andrea Jeremiah’s career ? To know that let us get into the movie review.

The film revolves around Mano (Sibiraj), a reckless young man who finds it difficult to cope with his break up with his ex-girlfriend Kokilavani ( Athulya Ravi ). So, what do heroes of Tamil cinema do to overcome a break up? They get drunk, and ruin others life. Mano is not any different. On the day of Kokilavani’s marriage he goes to get drunk and pass out. But he gets kicked out of the bar. Arbitrarily, he comes up with a plan to abduct a person. Gautham (Vamsi Krishna), a wealthy businessman falls as a target for his impulse. In unexpectedly turn of events, when he goes to kidnap Gautham he changes his mind and abducts his wife Parvathi (Andrea Jeremiah). And why did he do that? We have no clue. 

If you are starting to think it is weird, brace yourself, it is only going to be weirder. What was supposed to be a kidnapping affair, becomes a fraternizing event. Both Mano and Parvathi begin to talk about life, about love, oops…. sorry true love, woman empowerment, chauvinism, and whatnot. Meanwhile, on a parallel plot we have a group of friends who are concocting a plan to kidnap the child of their boss as a payback for sacking them. Why has Mano kidnapped Parvathi, will he send her back safe to her husband, and what happens to the group of friends thirsty for revenge, is what makes the rest of the flick. 

Director Kamalakannan’s Vattam screams for the need of a proper writer despite having one. Intentionally or unintentionally Vattam did have the scope to be a good conversational drama about life. Director Kamalakannan does bring forth important aspects of life and initiates a conversation through his lead characters. But the problem is, they lack depth, and are merely there to impress the audience for a moment rather than to create any meaningful discussion. That is where all good things about Vattam ends. To begin with the critique piece, director Kamalakannan opens Vattam in the most insipid way. A young man wanting to get drunk on the day of his ex’s marriage. Rightway, it draws a sigh out of us. He follows the jaded opening with hastily introduced characters exhibiting weird human behaviors to get the attention of the audience. But he just ends up achieving the contrary. 

Then, in the pretext of element of surprise, he places an absurd event to shock the audience. We have the kidnap scene. Once his lead characters are put on the stage as kidnappers and captive, he sort of spins the Stockholm syndrome to initiate a conversation between them to get them to deliver what he seems to believe as the progressive commentary on life. He does so in an inorganic way. It is as if a half-baked lecturer pulling a topic and spewing whatever he sees fit, and moves on to the next without bothering himself about how it reached his audience. The lead characters talk about complex matters in a great simplistic manner. By the time Vattam ends, we realize it is not Parvathi who is hostage to Mano. But it is we, the audience, to them. 

It is refreshing to see actor Sibiraj go out of his comfort zone and try something different. But sadly, the actor has not got the job done convincingly. However, he just about pulls off his part. Actress Andrea Jeremiah yet again showcases what good a performer she can be. Actress Athulya Ravi has nothing much to offer to move the proceedings. Nonetheless, she does complete justice to her role. Actor Vamsi Krishna for a change has picked a role that is contrasting from what he has been doing film after film. Unfortunately, his character does not offer him much room to perform. Actor Bala Saravanan lives up to the purpose for why he was brought on board. Actress Renuka is operational. Actress Chaitra Reddy is adequate. Actor Shyam Prasad is functional. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them. 

On the technical front, music director Harsha Nivas K Prasanna’s tracks do not stay in our memory. But he makes up for it with his background score that blends well in accord to the emotions in scenes. Cinematographer Mathesh Manickam has done a decent job covering the drama . He has positioned his cameras at the right angles to capture raw emotions, and has adeptly deployed drones to depict the picturesque spots of Coimbatore. Editor Ruben L A has brought forth his fine editing prowess to enhance the work of his colleague. 

On the whole, Vattam would have been a much better drama if it had been crisp and deep, a dearth of pointless chunk portions that simply end up dragging the run time.

Vattam tamil movie review: பால சரவணன் மாதிரியான கதாபாத்திரங்களை வைத்துக் கொண்டு, காமெடிக்கு அவரை பயன்படுத்தாமல், ஓரிரு காட்சிகளில் மட்டும் தலையை காட்ட வைத்தது ஏனோ.

Vattam Movie Review in Tamil: ‛வாழ்க்கை ஒரு வட்டம்..’னு தளபதி ஒரு டயலாக் சொல்வாரு... உண்மையிலேயே அந்த வட்டத்திற்கு அர்த்தம், வட்டம் திரைப்படத்தில் தான் தெரிகிறது. ஒரு ரவுண்ட் போலாம் என்பார்களே, அதில் ரவுண்ட் என்பதை, வட்டம் என்கிறோம். அப்படி ஒரு வட்டம் தான், இது. 

கொஞ்சம் குழப்புதுல? உண்மையை சொன்னா, ரொம்ப குழப்பும். சரி வாங்க, படத்துக்குள் போய் ஒரு வட்டம் போடுவோம். ஒரே சமயத்தில் இரு தரப்பு கடத்தல் திட்டம் போடுகிறது. ஒரு குரூப், தங்களை வேலையை விட்டு தூக்கிய ஐடி கம்பெனி மேலாளருக்கு பாடம் புகட்டி, பணம் கறக்க அவரது குழந்தையை தூக்குகிறது. இன்னொன்று சிபிராஜ், தனக்கு லிப்ட் கொடுத்த காரில் வரும் கோடீஸ்வரனை பணையம் வைத்து, பணம் கேட்கிறார். இப்படி இரு தரப்பு, கடத்தலில் பயணிக்கிறது வட்டம். 

துவக்கம் தான் அப்படி இருக்கிறது, கொஞ்ச நேரத்தில் குழந்தையை கடத்தும் கும்பல் எங்கு போகிறது என்று தெரியவில்லை. சிபியும், அவர் கடத்துபவரின் மனைவியுமான ஆண்ட்ரியாவும் பயணிக்கும் கதை தான் படம் முழுக்க வருகிறது. குழந்தையை கடத்தும் கும்பலை நாம் மறந்தே விடுகிறோம். க்ளைமாக்ஸில் அவர்கள் வரும் போது, ‛ஓ... இவங்க வேறு இருக்கிறார்களோ...’ என்று நமக்கு நாமே நினைவூட்டிக்கொள்ள வேண்டியுள்ளது. 

கடைசியில் என்னவென்று பார்த்தால், குழந்தையை கடத்த திட்டம் போடும் ஐடி கும்பல், ஹீரோ சிபிராஜூவுக்கு ராங்கால் போட, அவர்களின் திட்டத்தை முறியடிக்க, தான் ஒரு கடத்தல் நாடகம் போட்டு, குழந்தையை காப்பாற்றுவது தான் கதை தான். 

இதை சொல்லும் போது, எவ்வளவு தெளிவாக புரிகிறது? இப்படி சொல்லாமல், எப்படி வேண்டுமானாலும் சொல்லலாம் என்கிற ஃபார்மட்டில் போய், கடைசியில், த்ரில்லரும் இல்லாமல், க்ரைமும் இல்லாமல், எல்லாம் சுபமே என்கிற மாதரி முடிப்பதெல்லாம், அவர்களுக்கே தெரிந்த ட்விஸ்ட். 

காதல், பெண், ஏமாற்றம், அதுக்கு ஒரு அறிவுரை என கடத்தலை விட கொடூரமாக போகிறது காட்சிகள். எவ்வளவு நேரம் தான் பேசுவார்கள் என்று இல்லை; போதாக்குறைக்கு அவ்வப்போது சிபியின் ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் காட்சிகளை காட்டி கடுப்பேத்துகிறார்கள். ஒரு பிஎம்டபிள்யூ காரை வைத்துக் கொண்டு, படத்தை பிரம்மாண்டமாக்க முயற்சித்திருக்கிறார்கள். 

பிரம்மாண்டம், காட்சிகளில் இருப்பதை விட, கதையில் இருக்கவேண்டும் என நினைப்பவர்களுக்கு, வட்டமடிக்கும் போது கொஞ்சம் தலை சுற்றிவதை தவிர்க்க முடியாது. கொஞ்சமல்ல, ரொம்பவே பொறுமையை சோதிக்கிறார்கள். பெரிய ட்விஸ்ட் தருவதாக நினைத்து, க்ளைமாக்ஸில் அவர்களுக்கே உரிய ட்விஸ்ட் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள். 

கோவையை சுற்றிக்காட்டிய வரையில் கொஞ்சம் ஆறுதல். பீப் கொத்து புரோட்டா, வாத்து முட்டை ஆம்லெட் என, இரவு நேர சிற்றுண்டியை காட்டி, ஒரு இரவில் படத்தை முடித்ததாக அவர்கள் கூற நினைத்தால், ப்ளாஷ்பேக்கில் வரும் பகல்களை எந்த கணக்கில் சேர்ப்பது. உண்மையில், சிபிராஜ் ப்ளாஷ்பேக், தேவையில்லாத காதல் அறிவுரைகளை தவிர்த்திருந்தால், வட்டம் இன்னும் ஒரு ரவுண்ட் போயிருக்கும்.

பால சரவணன் மாதிரியான கதாபாத்திரங்களை வைத்துக் கொண்டு, காமெடிக்கு அவரை பயன்படுத்தாமல், ஓரிரு காட்சிகளில் மட்டும் தலையை காட்ட வைத்தது ஏனோ? காமெடி பெரிய அளவில் எடுபடாமல் போனதும், காதல் தூக்கலாக இருந்ததும், படத்திற்கு பெரிய மைனஸ். 

நிவாஸ் கே பிரசன்னாவின் பின்னணி ஓகே. கமலக்கண்ணனின் இயக்கம், இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் மெனக்கெட்டிருக்கலாம். ஹாட்ஸ்டார் ஓடிடி.,யில் நேரடியாக களமிறங்கியிருக்கும் வட்டம், தியேட்டரில் வராதவரை பிழைத்தது.

"Soodhu Kavvum" laid the road for the neo-noir black comedy thrillers. Especially the ones involving kidnapping as the central plot point enjoyed a crazy cult following among the young audiences post-2012. There is a certain template to these kidnap-capers wherein the kidnappers are duds and lack acumen. Gone are the days when a "Pandya" from Kaakha Kaakha menaces the screen with his electrifying presence.

Though such neo-noir kidnapping thrillers are familiar to the audiences, none can come close to "Vattam", directed by Kamalakannan. The movie goes about with its narrative in the most underwhelming and insipid fashion such that each character in the movie forgets their purpose after a certain point.

For instance, Sibi kidnaps Vamsi using Vamsi's car. What starts as a help slowly turns into a kidnap. For Sibi, it is supposed to be a role that has shades of grey. He tries as hard as he can. Unfortunately, his flat expressions do not match his body language, and his languid posture sets him back from achieving anything unique.

The entire episode involving Sibi and Vamshi was lifeless. There was no tension nor there were any interesting lines exchanged between them. The scenes were so lame, that after a certain point, we feel quite normal when the movie starts to test new lows.

The screenplay is one of the most horribly written in recent times. Andrea shows up with her night dress and ends up giving a sermon to Sibi about feminism and what it is to be liberated and how much she has been suppressed. Vamshi ends up being so dumb that he listens to Sibi and goes about eating street food, drinking with strangers, and listening to their aspirations. In the process, he realizes what life is. Wow! That should be enlightening, isn't it??

There is a parallel kidnapping story that involves a bunch of terminated IT employees who plan to take revenge on their employer by kidnapping his differently-abled son. They do so with some dumb sequences. The performance, especially that of Chaithra Reddy, was the worst of the lot.

It's not over yet, Sibi has a backstory. Of course, a love affair. Athulya comes in for attendance. She betrays him for the simple practical reason that she could not live with a guy who cannot make ends meet. That goes into another tangent where Sibi goes into a musing zone.

Overall, it's a mess and is a waste of time to even watch it on OTT. Producer SR Prabhu who has been behind some of the most successful and meaningful films in Tamil cinema should have done due diligence while vetting the script.

Even as I advise you to stay away, for the brave souls out there, this one streams on Hotstar.
