Course Summary

The sport sector is a fast-growing industry. It is currently worth £39 billion to the economy and continues to grow annually (‘Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation DCMS, 2015’). Coaching is an area that continues to expand, with up to 3.1 million adults in England estimated to having coached sport or physical activity in the previous 12 months, providing 7.6 million coach-led participation experiences per week (Coaching in an Active Nation The Coaching Plan for England, YouGov Study, 2016). This suite of qualifications includes embedded industry accreditation, allowing learners to progress directly to work in the sector or to further study.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development is intended for post-16 learners who want to progress directly to employment, including self-employment, in sports coaching and development roles. It is also suitable for those wishing to progress to higher education, where learners have the added advantage of using the qualification to help them obtain part-time employment while studying.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development is intended for post-16 learners wanting to progress directly to employment, including self-employment, in sports coaching and development roles. It is also suitable for those wishing to progress to higher education, where learners would have the added advantage of using this qualification to obtain part-time employment while studying

Extended Certificate/Diploma

Learners taking this qualification will study six mandatory units:

• Unit A: Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry

• Unit B: Health, Wellbeing and Sport

• Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills

• Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills

• Unit 1: Sport Development

• Unit 2: Self-Employment in Sport and Physical Activity

National Foundation Diploma/Extended Diploma

Learners taking this qualification will study seven mandatory units:

• Unit E: Research Project in Sport (Pearson-set)

The mandatory content allows learners to develop their technical skills, supported by underpinning knowledge, and gives learners the opportunity to relate the skills and knowledge to the sports coaching industry. This prepares learners to work independently as coaches and gives them the skills and expertise to coach at all levels of sports ability for both children and adults. Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills unit provides additional underpinning knowledge, skills and experience for working as an independent coach. The research project unit supports learners in carrying out independent research in a related topic to build research skills and experience that supports progression to higher education. Learners will select five optional units. These units allow learners to increase their breadth of understanding of working in the coaching industry, for example how to deal with sports injuries, sport psychology to support the mental health and sporting progress of participants, fitness testing to assess the fitness of participants, and technical and tactical skills to develop participants’ key techniques and skills. Learners can develop their business skills by selecting the marketing communications, sport and leisure facility operations and/or corporate social responsibility units.

The teaching team have many years industry experience in both the fitness and sports industries and this is shared in the teaching and learning environment with students.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

All study programme assessments are continuous throughout the academic year. Theory subjects are assessed through assignments, group work and presentations. Practical assessments are also continuous through the year, based on practical skills needed to be a Sports Coach.

Level 3 Extended Certificate

4 GCSE 9-4 including English OR Level 2 Sport with relevant English and maths

Level 3 Foundation Diploma

5 GCSEs 9-4, including English and Maths

This qualification gives learners the opportunity to progress to further study in higher education. It is recognised by higher-education providers as meeting entry requirements for many related degree programmes, such as a BA (Hons) in Sports Coaching and Development and a BA (Hons) in Sports Management. Learners should check entry requirements for degree programmes with providers.

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development focuses primarily on progression to employment as a coach. The extension, breadth and depth of optional units in this qualification give learners employment opportunities for working with participants of all ages, from children in primary and secondary schools, to adults of all ages. Possible job roles include community coach, sport-specific school coach, sport-specific after-school coach and weekend multi-sports holiday coach. Learners will also have the skills and expertise to work with beginners up to high-level performers. They will be able to work in the role of club sports coach, progressing to working with elite performers and in sport-development programmes in many capacities.

Research Project (Pearson Set)

Credit value: 30 credits.

The aim of this unit is to offer students the opportunity to engage in sustained research in a specific field of study. The unit enables students to demonstrate the capacity and ability to identify a research theme, to develop a research aim and objectives and to present the outcomes of such research in both written and verbal formats. he unit also encourages students to reflect on their engagement in the research process, during which recommendations for future, personal development are key learning points. 

LO1 Examine appropriate research methodologies and methods to identify those appropriate to the research process

LO2 Develop a research proposal, including a supporting literature review

LO3 Analyse data using appropriate techniques to communicate research findings 

LO4 Reflect on the application of research methodologies and process. 

  • Examine alternative research methodologies.  
  • Explore alternative methods and tools used for the collection of research data that consider costs, ethics and access  
  • Produce a research proposal, including a defined aim and objectives supported by a literature review  
  • Evaluate alternative research methodologies and data collection methods and justify choices made based on philosophical/theoretical frameworks.  
  • Evaluate the merits, limitations and pitfalls of approaches to data collection in compiling the research proposal.  
  • Justify chosen research methodologies and processes supported by a credible academically underpinned literature review  
  • Conduct research using appropriate methods for a business research project.
  • Analyse data from research findings to communicate research outcomes in an appropriate manner for the intended audience.  
  • Present the analysis of data utilising appropriate analytical techniques, charts and tables to meet the research aim and communicate outcomes.  
  • Communicate to the intended audience the research findings and outcomes, including justified recommendations.  
  • Reflect on the effectiveness of research methods applied in meeting objectives of the business research project.
  • Consider alternative research methodologies and lessons learnt in view of outcomes  
  • Demonstrate self reflection and engagement in the research project process, leading to recommended actions for future improvement.  
  • Demonstrate critical self-reflection  and insight that results in recommended actions for improvements to inform future research.

    Hi Matt. Short answer - no 😅 . We have opted to go with a proposal and we've asked learners to write up the results. We''ve loosely followed what a dissertation would look like: aim, hypothesis, lit review, proposal (outline, recruitment, data protection/ anonymity, associated risks etc), methodology, results with statistics, changes to research, future research, conclusion.
