UMass Medical School – Acceptance Rate, Ranking, and More

The University of Massachusetts is home to the Chan Medical School, among the most distinguished colleges of medicine in the entire east coast. 

Three schools make up Chan Medical: the T.H. Chan School of Medicine, the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing.

A public school and part of the UMass system, Chan Medical School graduated its first medical doctors in 1974 after the state established the school in 1962. 

The new school grounded its curriculum and practice in direct care experience, focusing on the human aspect of medicine as well as on scientific breakthroughs and research.

In a short half century, the school expanded quickly, adding the PhD program in biomedical sciences by 1979, then a nursing school in 1986. Chan acquired the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research and Massachusetts Biological Laboratories, entering the 2000s ready to expand their research capacity.

The school gained international attention when faculty member Craig Mello’s work on RNA interface garnered a Nobel Prize. 

Shared with Andrew Fire of Stanford, Mello’s Nobel marked a first for Chan. Still, with a $175 million gift from the Morningside Foundation in 2021, Chan Medical is poised for expansion, innovation, and more groundbreaking research.

UMass Medical School Acceptance Rate

Chan Medical’s acceptance rate is just over 9% ; 166 first-year students enrolled in the 2020-2021 academic year from over 5,000 applicants.

Enrolled students earned an average GPA of 3.77 and an average MCAT of 514 . While Chan doesn’t require minimum GPA or MCAT scores, the average scores of accepted students show that candidates must bring a solid academic record in order to be competitive in the application process.

Students in the most recent cohort graduated predominantly from New England-based universities; the top five undergraduate schools attended by first-year students are all located near UMass. 

But the top ten schools sending students to Chan round out with schools in LA, Michigan, and St. Louis.

During the application process, candidates may indicate their intention to apply for the Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health (PURCH) track , a program within the MD curriculum. Around 25 spots are available in each incoming class for the PURCH program.

Based at Baystate Health in Springfield, the PURCH program gives Chan medical students thorough training in healthcare disparity and issues relevant to urban and rural communities. 

While learning about how to address the problems of populations left out of health care, PURCH students become integral, valued members of their patient and clinical community.

Students certain they will attend Chan Medical if accepted may choose to apply as Early Decision candidates. These applications are due in the summer, and acceptances are issued by October. 

Students who apply for Early Decision and are not offered admission are automatically considered again among the regular decision applicant pool.

Accepted students may apply for a one-year deferral; Chan admissions will consider deferrals necessary for relevant scholarly work or for extenuating personal circumstances.

UMass Medical School Tuition

Chan Medical’s status as a state school means Massachusetts residents pay significantly less tuition compared to out-of-state students. For Massachusetts residents, tuition is $37,120 ; with estimated annual expenses including housing, insurance, food, and other fees, the cost comes to just over $70k.

Out-of-state tuition is $63,832, making the total annual cost a little over $97k. The Class of 2021 graduated with an average debt of $165,625 .

Institutional and federal aid packages are awarded through the financial aid office. Most awards are based on the submitted FAFSA; supplemental forms are only necessary if requested by the financial aid office.

UMass offers all medical students, whether or not they are candidates for financial aid, participation in the UMMS Learning Contract. This program defers payment of $5,568 of medical school tuition.

UMass Medical School Requirements

Chan applicants must complete a bachelor’s degree at a U.S. or Canadian university prior to enrollment. Required coursework includes two semesters each of biology, physics, and English composition. 

One semester each of calculus and statistics, along with five semesters of a combination of organic, inorganic, and biochemistry, make up the rest of the mandatory courses .

All required science courses must be completed within six years of application to Chan. Applicants currently in a graduate or professional program must be in the final year of the program in order to be eligible to apply to Chan.

Prospective students must submit applications through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) by October 15. Candidates receive secondary application materials specific to Chan, including Massachusetts Residency forms.

MCAT scores within three years must also be submitted, as well as three to six letters of recommendation. Chan provides specific guidance as to how to select recommenders if graduating from an undergraduate program without a premed advising program to provide a committee letter.

Chan details specific physical and character requirements for medical students. Candidates must demonstrate consistent communication skills, physical and intellectual coordination, as well as professional traits like sound judgment, cultural sensitivity, and motivation to learn, particularly in team situations.

UMass Medical School Notable Alumni

Chan graduates are leaders in primary care practice, as the program ranks #27 nationally for most graduates practicing in primary care fields. Service to rural areas also attracts many Chan graduates.

In recent years, Chan Medical established an alumni award to begin recognizing the extraordinary contributions to medicine made by individual Chan graduates.

Its inaugural award went to Christine Cassel, former CEO and president of the American Board of Internal Medicine and current Planning Dean of the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. 

Cassel was chosen by President Barack Obama to serve on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Susan Hou, another award winner, practices primary care in a facility she and her husband founded in a remote area of Bolivia. 2019 recipient Thomas FitzGerald earned his MD at UMass, completed a residency at Harvard, and returned to UMMS, where he chairs the Department of Radiation Oncology.

2020 recipient Jennifer Keating Litton is pioneering the treatment of cancer during pregnancy. She teaches at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center.

UMass Medical School Ranking

UMass Chan Medical School ranks as the #10 program in the nation for primary care, according to U.S. News. This still relatively new program also ranks in the top 50 for research, certain to continue moving up as a research institution, with its recognized faculty and the community investment in its future.

Online publication SCImago ranks UMass Chan Medical at #65 overall among research institutions , considering factors like the school’s contribution to the community, contributions to innovation, and societal impact.

UMass Chan Medical earns a #6 rank among our own list of the best medical schools in New England, a region with some of the best schools in the country.

Baystate and UMass Hospitals rank at #4 and #6, respectively , among Massachusetts hospitals. Both facilities are affiliated with Chan Medical and provide clinical rotation environments for Chan students.

According to the Association of University Technology Managers, UMass ranked at #4 for generating income from the licensing of products developed and discovered by faculty. Almost all of that licensing revenue was generated through the medical school, demonstrating its increasing prominence and efficiency.

Should You Attend UMass Medical School?

It’s a great time to consider UMass Chan Medical for a medical school career. Chan Medical’s curriculum is a good fit for students focused on primary care and patient interaction from the early days of medical school.

With a recent influx of research and development funds, Chan presents an attractive option for students interested in a research career as well.

MassBiologics, formerly the Massachusetts Biological Laboratory and now part of UMass, is the only publicly-owned, nonprofit facility manufacturing vaccines, so candidates interested in public health, infectious disease, or those interested in medical entrepreneurship would find a place at Chan.

Prospective medical students hoping to use their medical degrees to bring expert, compassionate care to people everywhere, including underserved communities, have been finding a home at Chan since 1970, and the future appears to hold even more promise.

2. How important is the MCAT in the application process?

The MCAT is a crucial component as it assesses your problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and knowledge of natural, behavioral, and social science concepts. A strong MCAT score can significantly enhance your application, especially at more competitive schools.

Yes, you can still apply, but it's important to compensate with a strong MCAT score, excellent letters of recommendation, and substantial clinical hours for medical school . Some schools also value an upward trend in your GPA and post-baccalaureate programs or graduate coursework.

4. how many medical schools should i apply to.

A good number of schools to apply to is around 15-20. Applying to too few schools can lead to not receiving interviews, while applying to too many can make it very difficult to complete secondary applications in a timely and effective manner.

5. there are quite a few schools where my gpa and mcat score are below the median. should i apply anyway.

Out of the 15-20 schools you apply to, perhaps 3-4 can be “reach” schools. These are schools that you really wish to attend but their GPA or MCAT score averages are slightly out of your reach. However, you should still choose these schools carefully and be close to the medians, as applying to schools you are not a good fit for will not end up favorably for you.

“I used MSAR, which is what has the stats for every med school, so I used that to kind of classify schools into reaches, about mid-tier and also lower-tier … And also I applied to about five or six DO schools … the [reach schools] would be like anything like 516-515 median [MCAT] so UCLA, UCI and whatnot and then the ones that were more targets [for me] were closer to the 511-512 or anything around that I would apply.”- Kannan, BeMo student

6. if a school has a high acceptance rate, does it mean it’s not as good.

No, it does not. All MD and DO schools in the US are accredited and meet a very high standard of educating future physicians. You will receive a great education no matter which medical school you attend. You must also keep in mind that for future residency matching, what matters most is what you do during medical school and not the competitiveness of the school you attend.

7. What are acceptance rates like for joint MD degree programs?

If your plan is to apply to  BS/MD programs ,  MD-PhD ,  MD-MPH ,  MD-MBA  or another combined MD program, be aware that not every medical school offers these types of joint degrees. Acceptance rates for these programs tend to be just as competitive, if not more so, than MD and DO programs. The admissions statistics and application requirements may be different from the MD program offered by the same institution, so evaluate any joint degree programs separately.

Hi there. A semantic correction I believe is warranted to your % acceptance rates. What you may be showing is the % of applicants that matriculated, which is different than the % of applicants that were accepted (as schools admit many more than the # that matriculate)

However, we calculate acceptance rates based on available spots, i.e., we divide available spots by the number of applicants. Plus, most schools do not divulge how many offers they make, only how many applicants matriculate.

Hi Avani, we recommend around 100-150 hours of clinical experience when applying to med schools, although some schools will list a minimum number of required hours and the type of experience required. Generally, a wide variety of clinical work and extracurriculars is best, although some schools value research more highly, or volunteering, etc. Check the profile and requirements of each school before applying! I wonder how acceptance rates vary across demographics and the role of diversity in the application process, given last year's supreme court decision? I know that has played a key role in friends being accepted to schools where they may have met a unique interest for that school and it's community based on personal factors even though their stats were below average. I am sure this varies school to school and is continuing to evolve.

The acceptance rate doesn't correlate strongly with the MCAT scores... For example, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons has an average matriculant MCAT of 522 and an acceptance rate of 1.97%. In contrast, Central Michigan College of Medicine has an average matriculant MCAT of 508 and an acceptance rate of 1.29%. A lower acceptance rate doesn't imply that the MCAT score will be higher. It is interesting to think about this as I select my schools based on the MCAT and various other admission criteria.

This article was great and extremely insightful! I have a friend who is looking to apply to medical school next year. I was wondering if you have any information on how the acceptance rate for medical school has historically changed from year to year (i.e. Is it becoming increasingly more difficult to get into medical school with each passing cycle?) Also, with D.O. schools beginning to receive more respect, popularity, and recognition, do you anticipate competitive residencies like dermatology, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery becoming a more realistically-achievable pursuit for D.O. graduates looking to specialize in such fields? How to Get Into University of Massachusetts Medical School – Know the Curriculum

Curriculum Overview:

UMass Med has a pre-clinical curriculum the first two years of medical school. Then, you take your USMLE Step 1 and then do 2 years of clinical rotations.

Additionally, the student body is split up into learning communities. Each student has a “capstone project,” which they can start working on during their first year.

Pre-Clinical Years:

The first year at UMass Medical School focuses on basic biology and physiology. During the second year, you learn medicine through organ systems. Throughout your pre-clinical curriculum, you will learn physical exam skills as well as patient communication and integrate the social determinants of health.

There are several summer opportunities for UMass med students.  You can apply for the official Summer Research Program, in which you can work with faculty during the summer in between your first and second years of medical school; all students will do a poster presentation the following fall. There is also summer curriculum development where you can work with the UMass Med School’s medical education team to improve the curriculum. University of Massachusetts Medical School Clinical Curriculum :

Clinical Years:

During your 3rd year of medical school, you do your core clinical rotations. The school has divided the core curriculum into themes: are of Adults (Medicine and Neurology), Care of Families (Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Family Medicine), Perioperative and Maternal Care (Surgery and Obstetrics-Gynecology). During your fourth year, you there are courses like “Emergency Clinical Problem Solver” and “Advanced Biomedical and Translational Sciences.” Additionally, you are given ample elective time to explore your clinical and non-clinical interests.

So, what can you do to increase your chances of getting accepted into a Massachusetts medical school?

It is important to take note that most of the Massachusetts medical schools, Boston University, Harvard Medical School, and Tufts Medical School, are “out-of-state friendly schools.” In other words, their incoming classes are primarily made up of out-of-state students. When evaluating how competitive you are, be honest with yourself. Are your MCAT and GPA close to the metrics for accepted students? If not, consider retaking your MCAT or enhancing your GPA. Several of the Massachusetts medicals schools have MCAT averages above the 90%, so consider this when generating a list of schools you want to apply to. If you are interested in pursuing a MD/MPH or MD/PhD, make sure to check that the schools you apply to offer these special programs. Guests speakers Judy Hanlon, pastor at Hadwen Park Congregational Church, co-founder of the LGBT Asylum Task Force, and member of the Southern New England Conference Immigration, Refugee and Asylum Task Team; and Al Green, ministry director of the LGBT Asylum Task Force, talked about the work of the task force and sought to inspire change through personal stories.  

UMass Chan celebrates future nurse practitioners with white coat ceremony

The Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing presented 49 Doctor of Nursing Practice students with their white coats on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in a celebration signifying their transition into clinical practice.

Student Spotlight

Melanie pivoted from teaching ballet and working as a per-diem secretary at Heywood Hospital in Gardner to enrolling in the  Graduate Entry Pathway (GEP) program in the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing at UMass Chan Medical School.

As she got to know her secretarial position and the health care setting, she became more interested in what she could do on the other side of the desk. She found nursing compelling because it challenges her to think critically about everything she does.   She is excited to join the profession and wants to become a nurse practitioner in an intensive care unit.

As an ICU nurse working through the most challenging pandemic peak, I realized how nursing philosophy could interplay with bedside nursing. I surprised myself with how specific nursing theories and philosophies connect with better patient outcomes. Lead the future of biological data analysis with our doctorate in biostatistics..

Bayesian methods. Biomarker discovery. Machine learning. Experiment with these and other areas of research to examine causes and effects of disease as you harness your quantitative aptitude and sense of curiosity to pursue UMass Amherst’s PhD in biostatistics.

Designed to prepare you for research and teaching positions in academic institutions as well as leadership roles in health-related agencies, our program offers both major and minor areas of concentration. Core courses include graduate work in generalized linear models, Bayesian inference, survival analysis, as well as statistical theory. Every student is encouraged to select, in consultation with their academic advisor, the elective courses to take, based on their training, background, and interests.

Completion of a doctorate in biostatistics requires self-direction, independence, perseverance, and, naturally, quantitative aptitude. Evidence of these qualities plays an important role in our admissions decisions.

Many PhD students are supported with research assistant (RA) positions funded by faculty grants. Doctoral students are also provided financial support via teaching assistant (TA) positions. All full-time PhD students are currently fully funded.
