THUNIVU MOVIE REVIEW

Thunivu (aka) Thunivuu review

Thunivu is a film written and directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Boney Kapoor under the banner Bayview Projects in association with Zee Studios. The film has Ajith Kumar and Manju Warrier in the lead roles while Samuthirakani, John Kokken, GM Sundar, Dharshan, Mohana Sundaram, Bagavathi, and others in supporting roles. The music is composed by Ghibran while the cinematography is handled by Nirav Shah.

A heist takes place in a bank in Chennai and minutes later, the attackers are taken down by Ajith Kumar, who in turn decides to rob the bank. The rest of the film deals with the intention and backstory behind Ajith's heist and whether it is successful or not.

Right from the first frame, director H. Vinoth is clear about what he wants to do with a superstar like Ajith and gives us a banger of an intro that would send any audience into a frenzy. Especially Ajith imitating Michael Jackson and dancing inside the bank are moments that make you hoot and whistle. The entire first half is filled with such sequences.

However, once the second half begins, the film starts unloading a lot of social information on the audience while the entertainment takes a backseat. There are only a couple of songs so that doesn't disturb the film's flow much, but the screenplay could have been more engaging in the second half. Thunivu also runs out of twists a little early making the fag end of the film slightly predictable.

The second half is filled with guns, guns, and more guns, but a little emotional connection would have been better. There's a subplot involving Darshan, and that tries to emotionally appeal to the audience. However, the issue that's being addressed takes centerstage and leaves no room for other elements.

Ajith breeds swagger in every frame and the action sequences pack a punch. This could easily be one of the best roles written for him after Mankatha. It was refreshing to see Manju Warrier not being reduced to a romantic partner, but instead having her own moments throughout. The rest of the cast, Samuthirakani and GM Sundar in special make their presence felt.

On the technical front, Ghibran's background score works really well. The couple of songs that appear are catchy and the Gangsta theme is better along with the visuals. Nirav Shah offers a high visual quality with his frames and is one of the pillars of the film. The way a few sequences are choreographed by Peter Hein deserves praise.

Overall, Thunivu has enough in the first half to satisfy Ajith fans and families while the second half could have been handled better comparatively. As of now, the film ends up as a good watch for the festival.

Thunivu Review: Ajith Kumar's Heist Drama Is A Perfect Entertainer

Curated By : Entertainment Bureau

Thunivu is an action heist film written and directed by H. Vinoth, and produced by Boney Kapoor.

Exposing agenda-driven media outlets or the corrupt nature of the police and banking systems is something H Vinoth has done well in the film.

After last year’s Valimai, the trio Ajith Kumar, H Vinoth and Boney Kapoor have returned with their latest offering Thunivu. The movie went through an extensive promotional campaign, unusual for an Ajith Kumar movie. Thunivu focuses on a bank robbery, only for the thieves to realise that the bank is already hijacked by the film’s protagonist aka hero. What is his motive behind the hijack? How does the clash between the robbers and hijackers play out? These form the crux of the story.

Greed for wealth forms an integral theme of the film throughout the narrative. The majority of the characters are driven by the motive of money, and the movie also showcases how money exploits a human’s personality in general. Ajith brings the audience under his control with his very first scene. His body language, dialogues and stylish dance are all flamboyant and poignant.

Thunivu does not play to the tunes of the formulaic South Indian film, where the leading ladies are just reduced to being the romantic interest for the larger-than-life hero and just cater to the glamour quotient of the film. Actress Manju Warrier has a pivotal character in the film, and there are quite a few action sequences where we see her display her agility.

It’s intriguing that Ajith’s name remains a mystery to us. For a brief time, he goes by the aliases Michael Jackson, Chief, or the Darkdevil. The effort put into discussing bank scams in Thunivu is perfect.

Ghibran’s background score is the highlight of this film and adds weight to the narrative. Vijay Velukkutty’s cinematography should also be appreciated. The climax does not quite live up to the expectations that are raised throughout the film; and it also tends to be a tad lengthier than required. Deep dialogues and a fast-paced screenplay are the highlights of this film.

'Thunivu' movie review: Bullets and bombs fail but the dialogues don’t

How much you like Thunivu depends on how much you are willing to forgive its weak portions—and of course, how much you have missed seeing Ajith Kumar enjoy breaking bad. When he screams, “This heist is MINE!”, close your eyes and you can almost hear him shout, “This is MY f****** game!” Much like in that landmark film of his (Mankatha), here too, Ajith Kumar plays a character who’s eager to come across as a villain.

There, that’s another AK reference. To make matters easier for him, one of the characters—who is perhaps not too familiar with AK’s filmography—even asks him a pointed question: “Are you a hero or a villain?” Ajith, knowing how much we enjoy him being ‘bad’, dances about with a machine gun, unabashed in his execution of a bank heist. “Ipdi makkal panatha kollai adikkariye. Vekkamaa illa?” some hapless hostage asks him. Another star playing this character might have responded with a few dialogues to justify his actions, some persuasive speech perhaps to convince the hostage. AK, playing Dark Devil, simply replies, “Illa.” I spat out my Coke in laughter.

But each time the film steps into action—and it happens a lot especially in the first half—I kept wishing that they had ‘written’ the stunts better. In an eagerness to sometimes overwhelm us with music (which doesn’t quite do enough to sell ‘mass’ moments in this film), and of course, bullets and guns, filmmakers often tend to overlook the importance of telling a story through action.

So, what we get is AK casually walking towards seasoned criminals armed with guns, and casually ducking and spraying bullets at them. And with all due respect to his many appeals, agility isn’t one, and so, it all feels a bit too easy. There are no memorable visual ideas either to make you feel invested.

Meanwhile, Vinoth quietly begins to set up the atmosphere. He introduces us to an overwhelmed constable; a corrupt inspector; two journalists—one new and ignorant, the other aware and corrupt (a funny, dark character called Mai Pa); a rare, righteous senior police officer (Samuthirakani)… There’s variety here, but more importantly, Vinoth shows some real understanding of the symbiotic relationships that sully the system: the police and the politician, the police and the journalist…

And yet, given how long we spend inside the bank and given all the seeming urgency and action, it was hard for me not to get restless and wonder whether AK’s Dark Devil, who the music keeps referring to as a ‘gangsta’, has any real point or purpose. Or is he like The Joker, a dog chasing cars, not knowing what to do with one even if he caught one?

The film makes more than one reference to the ‘joker’, in fact. Truth be told, after The Dark Knight, it’s hard not to think of The Joker any time a maniacal man seems to be involved in a bank heist. And I think the Dark Devil definitely qualifies as a rather unhinged man—and occasionally, he can be seen wearing a mask too. However, Thunivu moves on into more serious spaces after the interval, and it’s here that I think it truly finds itself. This is when H Vinoth’s strengths come to the fore. This is also when the film subverts ideas on who’s good and who’s evil—and at one point, even attacks all of us for not really caring about morality, in the face of entertainment.

Where Samuthirakani’s policeman speaks of the financial system being a protective entity, one responsible for spreading a lot of ‘good’ in our society, Thunivu goes on to reveal its uglier side as well. Credit cards offer you a long, free window in which to pay back your debt, but what’s the catch—and more importantly, who’s the catch? Under the guise of respectable jobs, how do otherwise well-meaning people make money?

From the outside, Thunivu may seem like it’s about one man’s attack on a bank, but the film is really about his defence. The attack is instead by a larger, complex system— full of those tasked with ensuring our welfare including politicians, financial entities, police officers and the media—and the victims are, well, us. If AK’s Dark Devil is a villain, what do we call all those corrupt authorities? Who’s the bigger evil really—a terrorist or a system that fabricates such narratives to quietly, profitably terrorise countless lives? When Thunivu digs into these spaces, you see how H Vinoth can be quite enterprising.

Where a Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru played a part in vilifying an already persecuted group of migrant workers, you can see the filmmaker’s willingness to learn and evolve—and that’s heartening. In this film, very quietly, he captures the prejudice of a Tamil man towards a North Indian waiter. What truly comes through Thunivu is that H Vinoth cares, and I think that augurs well at a time when we could do with braver voices willing to take on oppressive systems.

That’s why Samuthirakani saying, “Idhu Tamil Nadu!” feels so powerful. And that’s also why that whole lengthy portion in which AK’s Dark Devil interviews three high-ranking officials—who are really scammers—turns out to be both educative and so entertaining. It’s probably among the rare instances when I didn’t exactly flinch from a lathi landing (which must still make us uncomfortable, of course). Even here, Vinoth is careful to point out the hypocrisy of how the police handles a `500 theft, as opposed to a `500 crore financial crime.

All the action needed to be written better (I enjoyed what Manju Warrier does in the film though); the flashback needed to be less manipulative; a song like Chilla Chilla needed to be edited out; the final action flourish, with all the ships and helicopters, needed to be less tiresome; the film’s end needed to be punchier. And YET, I enjoyed certain spaces in Thunivu—like how it’s not easy to decide whether the Dark Devil does what he does for good—or for revenge. As AK says, “You asked for God.

But God sent the devil.” Such smart moments make it hard to be unforgiving of Thunivu, even despite all the flab. For every forgettable exchange of bullets, there’s a dialogue that’s fierier. Like when a bad guy asks AK for forgiveness and he retorts, “But your CIBIL score is low.” That there is violence worth the price of the ticket.

Thunivu movie review: Ajith Kumar is full of swag in fun heist film that doesn’t take itself too seriously

Thunivu movie review: ajith kumar stars in one of his most entertaining performances since mankatha (2011). the tamil film also stars manju warrier and john kokken..

H Vinoth’s Thunivu, his third consecutive film with Ajith Kumar, is a modern-day companion piece to Shankar’s 1993 film Gentleman. Thunivu, unlike Gentleman, doesn’t take itself too seriously and thankfully that’s what makes it a largely entertaining film, which after a long time allows Ajith to have so much fun with a character. In spite of some rough edges, especially how the film does lose its purpose in the second half, Thunivu holds good for most part because of Ajith’s wild performance of a character that’s both a hero and villain. Also read: Manju Warrier reacts to ‘fun trolls’ worried about 'not hearing her voice’ in Thunivu song Kasethan Kadavulada

Thunivu movie review: Ajith Kumar in a still from the Tamil film.

The film opens with a gang making an elaborate plan to rob one of the biggest banks in Chennai. The plan is to execute a heist worth ₹ 500 crore, which the bank has stashed beyond the permissible limit of ₹ 1000 crore. Everything goes as planned and the gang succeeds in taking control of the bank along with a large group of hostages. However, trouble comes in the form of one guy who decides to fight back, only to take control of the bank from the gang. That guy turns out to be Ajith, who plays a nameless character. Ajith earns the trust of the gang and makes them work for him. He promises each one of them a cut from the ₹ 5000 crore bank money he plans to rob. As Ajith puts his plan in motion, his two-member team which also comprises of Manju Warrier , is quietly pulling strings on the outside. The rest of the story is about what is Ajith actually doing inside the bank and does he really plan to rob it.

As long as Thunivu plays out like a heist film, it’s super entertaining and a lot of credit for that goes to Ajith, who makes his anti-hero character so charismatic with his screen presence. But the film isn’t just a heist film as it also features a subplot that serves as a social commentary on a pressing issue. As much as it tries to shine the spotlight on the issue, it also raises pertinent questions about the negligence of the general public. Luckily, it doesn’t get too preachy with the message it wants to convey. Apart from the detour it takes in the second half to drive home its point, Thunivu stays true to its genre of heist action. It has some cool, slightly over-the-top action stretches that work to a large extent. But it’s the character of Ajith, who oozes swag from the word go, which makes this one of his most entertaining performances since Mankatha (2011).

With each collaboration, H Vinoth has managed to bring out something refreshing with respect to Ajith’s performance. In Thunivu, he doesn’t have any qualms in making Ajith play a mastermind criminal with no ethics. Manju Warrier, too, gets a role that she has so much fun with. The film does fumble towards the end, when the action feels underwhelming but the film has enough moments to keep one invested. Ghibran’s background score suits the mood of the film really well and so were his songs.

‘Thunivu’ movie review: Ajith Kumar moonwalks through a racy but insufficient screenplay

Ajith kumar’s charisma takes the centre stage in h vinoth’s ‘thunivu’, a story about corruption in private banks, but the film loses itself in some glaring issues.

Making a film for superstars like Vijay and Ajith must feel like walking barefoot on a tightrope, isn’t it? In Thunivu , his third collaboration with Ajith Kumar, H Vinoth manages to tread this fine line through a tight narration that plays with just two notes — one that lets Ajith do what he is known to do best, and a second, that tells a taut story about corruption in a style that the filmmaker is known for — and it works, mostly.

Thunivu is an out-and-out Ajith Kumar show — he enters with a bang, shakes a leg often, sends goons flying, and moonwalks through this cakewalk of a film that doesn’t demand too much from him. And, he actually moonwalks in a scene. Ajith plays a private mercenary who is only called as Dark Devil. When Radha (Veera) and his gang take control of a private bank in Chennai, Dark Devil, along with Kanmani (Manju Warrier) and their gang, double-cross them and strike a deal. Outside the bank, the Police Commissioner (Samuthirakani) takes over the case. A bank heist story with multiple surprises, letdowns, lots of bullet-spewing action, heroic triumphs and redemptions, begins. This, of course, does mean that, like in most commercial star vehicles, the hero gets a plot armour right at the beginning and it’s always important to explain yourself to a man you are about to kill. Thankfully, it’s easy to look beyond all that for Vinoth’s screenplay is racy and taut, or at least for the most part. He withholds information and peppers enough surprises to keep you hooked.

Issues grip Thunivu only after the interval block; firstly, the way Vinoth uses masala cinema’s coveted intermission sequence is novel, but what follows doesn’t do it justice. The mystery behind Ajith’s gang and their motive is the only real trump card to play with, and the screenplay starts spilling information, as it should. We realise that they are a highly-skilled mercenary gang for hire, with an impressive success rate. However, the backstory we get for the gang leaves no impression and there are a lot of unanswered questions. Ambiguity isn’t the issue, but the information given isn’t clear and the scenes here lack coherence. For instance, all of a sudden we are expected to back two of the gang members... just because their leader says that the gang is “his family.”

It was obvious for the fans to make parallels with Ajith’s 2011 film Mankatha given that this film too has a menacing Ajith at the forefront of a bank heist — here too there are double-crosses and... ‘Money, Money, Money.’ The worry is if Ajith’s character would make an U-turn as a noble figure and the film suddenly become a sermon of sorts. But in Thunivu , Ajith isn’t a Robin Hood; he is more of an instigated anti-hero with little or no redeeming qualities. His morality is skewed; he bodies innocent police officers and only cares about the larger picture he is pursuing. Most characters in Thunivu have gray shades, and Vinoth sets out to expose how almost everyone in this world is selfish in one way or the other. It’s one thing to just say that banks abuse people’s hunger for money, but it is another to show, through the hierarchy of a private bank, how corrupt and how real that can get.

Vinoth also ensures that the film doesn’t become preachy in telling this. In fact, it’s a win that we never get dialogues that directly address the gallery. Every time Thunivu makes a point about the everyday atrocities of banks and how the system manipulates common folk, the cheers get louder and that says a lot. The way he positions the media in this game, while also commenting on their selfish agenda, is also quite interesting. This is a superstar film that talks about real issues that everyman faces every day.

We get a second flashback that also adds more substance to the story. Interestingly, here, through a very self-aware dialogue, Vinoth questions us, the film watchers, on our aversion to stars who tell a karuthu which reduces them to just entertainers. But the answer is simple and it lies in Thunivu itself; it works when done with novelty which was the case in most of his previous films. Speaking of which, kudos to Vinoth for adding a sequence that speaks against the stigma attached to migrant workers.

While it’s true that Ajith shoulders the film through his charisma and enigmatic dialogue delivery, he faces no real threat in Thunivu and we get a villain who asks the hero to promise not to kill him (!). And with him taking up all the screen time, no other character makes a real impression. Manju Warrier’s Kanmani suffers the same fate as Huma Qureshi from Valimai ; she does play a pivotal role in the heist, but did this role of a sidekick require an actor of Manju’s calibre?

The third act of Thunivu is its weakest section. Lack of novelty aside, it even undoes what had been set up from the beginning. Even a satisfying all-guns-out blowout could have left a better aftertaste. What’s also disappointing is that despite all the noise and showers of bullets, there isn’t a single memorable action sequence, something audiences are bound to expect from Vinoth. Thunivu isn’t the filmmaker’s best work, but that’s not to say it’s a bad film at all.

Thunivu is currently running in theatres

Violence & Scariness

Violence is rife. Explosions, shootings, and stabbings result in many deaths. Lots of choreographed fighting with people flying through the air. Someone's fingers are shot off. Someone's knees are shot. A man is thrown from a building; it's reported as suicide. His head bleeds onto the sidewalk. People are doused with gasoline by police officers and set afire. Their charred remains are seen. A small boy is held over machinery to threaten the boy's dad. Bombs are strapped to hostages. Men are trapped under a secret floor panel with a bomb; it goes off. Cars and buildings are bombed. A boat is sunk, its occupants presumed shot and drowned as a fleet shoots and pursues, with helicopters strafing from above. Someone seems to be extorting a police officer over a sex tape with a college student.

Parent and Kid Reviews

  • Parents say

There aren't any parent reviews yet. Be the first to review this title.

What's the Story?

Although not told in any particular order, the events in THUNIVU are left to the audience to piece together. A dashing, smiling thief known as the Dark Devil (Ajith Kumar) is asked to organize a bank heist. He turns the job down, leaving the criminals to hire another gang. Some police officers are in on the heist, and bank owners and executives, too. It all quickly goes awry in a bank full of hostages, guards, dirty cops, journalists on the take, and a rival gang that kills the original robbers and takes over the crime. The upstart robbers are led by the Dark Devil, who originally turned the job down. But we don't learn that fact until later when, through a series of flashbacks, it's clear Dark has figured out what's really going on. He knows that the people involved in the original heist are corrupt and leverages his knowledge. By the end, the difference between good guys and bad guys is fuzzy, leading to the lingering question posed here: "Who the gangsta?"

Is It Any Good?

Thunivu i s a gargantuan mess, a flashy heist-social-commentary-dance fest. Director-writer H. Vinoth relishes the stylish, almost comic Deadpool -type pace and nonchalance, but he matches it with the plot's incoherence and overly ambitious reach to create something only watchable for its magnificent insanity and incomprehensibility. This feels like a heist movie parody, like a 146-minute SNL skit. The misguided direction relies on unwieldy flashbacks seemingly inserted to explain multiple overlapping stories that each weigh down the story in their own different ways. In the end, we must ask why the heist was planned at all, given certain facts divulged at the end.

The shootings that go on and on, fueled by seemingly limitless ammunition, explosions, fistfights, martial arts displays, dance sequences, singing, and plotting, all cancel each other out to result in a boring sludge of excess. Despite a dashing and engaging lead character played with cheek and charm by the singing, dancing, machine gun-toting Ajith Kumar, nothing in the three or four individual movies that live within this two-and-a-half-hour muddle seems worth the monumental investment of effort, time, and money. The English subtitles seem a bit off as well -- for example, as robbers keep talking about "looting the bank."

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how the movie's length affects the audience's concentration on the many story threads, flashbacks, subjects, and characters.

Singing and dancing are a staple in Indian movies. How do choreographed dances enhance or detract from the audience's view of the rest of the action -- a bank robbery, shootings, chases, bank fraud, etc.?

How is violence treated here? Do you think that choreographing violence, setting it to music, and playing it in slow-motion glorifies the violence? Why, or why not? What are other ways of showing violence on-screen?

Thunivu on Netflix Movie Review: Ajith's Star Presence Isn’t Enough Currency In A Script With Little Guts And No Glory

Director: H. Vinoth

Cast: Ajith Kumar , Samuthirakani, Manju Warrier

Somewhere within H Vinoth’s third film with Ajith Kumar lies a somewhat clever one-liner. When explained broadly, this plot-line tries to subvert the bank heist movie while also flipping the moral compass of its protagonist as it goes along. There are smart ideas that get planted early on to insert the notion that a bank is essentially for the good of the people. You see innocent customers at this bank along with a set of normal, everyday tellers when we first enter. Yet the cleverness of this setup is in understanding how it operates like a see-saw, with the intentions of the bank only becoming clearer as we keep going up the chain of command, working our way up to top management.

This love for grey characters is just as evident as we keep cutting back to people outside the bank as well. It works reasonably well as it gets you to see human behaviour of the outsiders, especially when a bank robbery is taking place. The nobodies approach this situation voyeuristically, choosing first to take out their phones for a minute of social media fame. The media too, which works pretty much like the middle management of the bank, is a little more culpable in their involvement. They look at what’s most beneficial to them and what helps them advance in their career and then choose to let out the bit of information they’re able to leak into public domain. The stand-in for the upper management among these outsiders are the top police officers and politicians, equally corrupt, equally unjust.

This is the one real aspect of  Thunivu  that works well because there’s barely any room for any basic goodness. Everyone in the film is a little selfish and it’s the degree of selfishness that separates the light greys from the dark greys. What this does is make even the  paavams  in the film a tad more alive. In the usual Shankar film or Atlee film, a pensioner who puts their entire life savings into a bank will come across as a saint who is probably doing that for his grandchildren to go to school. But in  Thunivu , even this pensioner just doesn’t want to miss out on a get-rich-quick scheme, even if it is in the form of a mutual funds plan.

And you really have to respect this decision because a) this is a more accurate picture of the world because everyone is a little corrupt and b) Vinoth cannot write a real, well-meaning character to save his life. To elaborate on the second point, we get a sequence that become the film’s first flashback. This is when we learn a little bit more about “Michael Jackson” (Ajith Kumar doing his thing very well) and his gang of power brokers. In simpler terms, he is the leader of a group you call when you cannot think of anyone else to do a certain kind of job. This includes taking down entire gangs in Bangkok or to help plan your next heists . But besides a song and a rushed action sequence, you barely know any members of this group or their interpersonal dynamics. So when two of these “close” members are attacked just as we first meet them, they are only as good as cloth hangers to us. For a revenge angle to be written based on this felt a little too obvious and flat.

You may find a similar amount of convenience in the way Jackson and his partner Kanmani (Manju Warrier) simply walk into a house that ties things up neatly into the screenplay. It’s super important that this happens because this is the point where a personal tragedy gets tied up with the central issue the film wants to address. But this double-coincidence is just plain uninspired writing. What makes this detour even more jarring is how it feels like all the meat was stuffed to fit into the second half alone.

This is where it transforms into a film about banking and how the sector takes advantage of its customers by hiding the truth rather than lying blatantly. But even this point is arrived at by using a second flashback that features one of the driest bits of writing, only to explain how a bank employee must transform himself to fit into the bank’s unethical modus operandi. The overall silliness of this scene is such that it reminded me of those films in the 70s where all the villains laugh heartily after explaining their plans for world domination to each other.

Yet what was most crushing as a fan of Vinoth’s previous movies was just how boring the fight sequences were. Barring a thrilling two-minute stretch inside the bank where the camera runs laps around Ajith and his guns, there’s almost nothing that came with an idea or an sub-story. One in particular, which tries to use flares as an element to turn a pitch dark action sequence into something colourful and inventive, gets totally lost as an idea in a poorly choreographed mess. This could even be said about the climatic sequences which just tries to fix the lack of ideas with a lot of money. So why have one speed boat when you can have three dozens, a handful of helicopters and a full cargo ship. With awkwardly stitched together reaction shots and noticeable CG work, it doesn’t even work as a fun over-the-top blow out.

The only stretch that feels like the perfect mix of a clever idea fitting into the mould of a Shankar film is when the sarcasm of the protagonist is used to teach some real lessons to the top management using the same techniques banks use against us. What makes up the rest of the movie is large chunks of air written around Ajith’s star charisma alone. That’s not just what you expect from a filmmaker like Vinoth, who in the very least can give you a solid informercial and a few cool fights scenes before and after it. With very little of either,  Thunivu  isn’t really the film one was banking on.
