3. Just-India-Pak! Now, a World Cup to be won
-By Sandeep Dwivedi
Before every India-Pakistan cricket game, a cliche gets played on loop on both sides of the border. “It doesn’t matter if we don’t win the Cup but India / Pakistan shouldn’t lose to Pakistan / India”. The nouns in that line are interchangeable, depending on the geography. Hidden in this casual remark is the essence of a bitter rivalry that overrides rational thought and limits ambitions.
It also brings to mind a charming story that a friend, and fellow cricket reporter, had narrated after his interview with Tiger Pataudi. Still a rookie, he was understandably overwhelmed to sit across his boyhood hero. While leaving, he couldn’t deny himself a fan-boy moment. “Sir, it was my life’s dream to meet you,” he said. The handsome Nawab smiled and after a cinematic pause replied, “Son, have bigger dreams”. [ Read Full Article ]
4. 360 Focus on SKY
– By Devendra Pandey & Abhishek Purohit
Devisha Shetty had watched Suryakumar Yadav woo cricket, while living it up in his 20s, like most youngsters of that age do. In 2018, Devisha, his wife of five years who’s known him for a decade, watched him finally commit to the game, shrugging off his wild days. The new rising of the sun that Indian cricket is witnessing, and which might reach phenom international star proportions, was the flame Devisha watched grow into the Surya blaze of now. 5. Pak Openers – SWAT salvo
-By Sandip G
In the previous edition of the T20 World, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan 303 and 281 runs respectively in Pakistan’s run to the semifinals. The next highest contribution was Fakhar Zaman’s 109. Only other batsman, Shoaib Malik, managed 100 runs, and the underwhelming middle order copped criticism for their middling returns. A year on, the situation remains as grim as it was during the World Cup, so much so that Zaman was recalled into the World Cup squad. Both in the Asia Cup as well the seven-game rubber against England, besides the tri-series in New Zealand, the vulnerabilities of the middle-order was exposed. In the Asia Cup, they were over-reliant on Rizwan, with Babar enduring a rare lean patch (68 runs at 11). [Read Full Article]
6. Ashwin’s Bowling Choices
-By Sriram Veera
Former Pakistan skippers Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq have stressed on the big role finger- spinners play in T20 cricket in Australia. Malik spoke of a moment from his Big Bash League days, when his captain George Bailey asked him to bowl at two set batsmen.
“I gave him a stare, as if to say what is he doing,” Malik laughs on A Sports, adding, “Bailey told me ‘no, no, finger spin will help take wickets and check runs here (Australian conditions).” Misbah then rationalised the decision: “It’s difficult to sweep on those tracks with the extra bounce, or even pull. It’s not like Asia where you can rock back and pull a short ball from a spinner easily.” [ Read Full Article ]
7. The Kohli Prologue
– By Nihal Koshie
When Virat Kohli was 12, he rode with his father on a scooter to buy kites ahead of Independence Day. His father only realised halfway through the journey that Kohli didn’t take the pillion rider’s helmet. A young Kohli convinced him not to turn back. While returning, they stopped to buy watermelon, Kohli’s favourite fruit. The senior Kohli panicked on seeing a few cops strolling about. Worried about being challaned and without realising his son hadn’t got on, he sped off. Kohli says he didn’t talk to his father for two days after that. The father returned to search for his son on realising he hadn’t reached home but Kohli gave him the cold shoulder. [Read Full Article]
8. Tickets (Gone in 10 minutes) – By Devendra Pandey
“How is it possible for tickets to be sold out in just 10 minutes?” a local Melbourne Radio host wonders. A more rhetorical query wouldn’t have possibly crackled over Melbourne’s airwaves in recent times.
This is a city that regularly hosts the Aussie Open Grand Slam and the Boxing Day Test. It has also witnessed the ODI World Cup finals. But still, Melbourne was surprised by the speed at which tickets for Sunday’s World T20 game between India and Pakistan got snapped up online. [Read Full Article]
9. Haris Rauf’s Ambala buddy
– By Devendra Pandey
Three years ago when Haris Rauf moved to Hobart as part of an exchange programme between Pakistan Super League’s Qalandars and the Hurricanes, the Rawalpindi-born paceman found a friend in Haryana-born Mayank Gupta
A beautiful friendship and lots of kadha chai brewed over the few weeks that Ambala’s Mayank Gupta spent as a roommate with Pakistani pacer Haris Rauf in December 2019 in the Australian city of Hobart, long before the bowler became a big name. When India meets Pakistan in their opening T20 World Cup game in Melbourne Sunday, far away in Ambala (Haryana), Gupta might find himself in two minds on whom to support. He wants India to win, but at the same time he will instinctively hope that his friend Haris Rauf does well. [Read Full Article]
10. Captain Rohit’s Calm on Match Eve
Since Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled KL Rahul , trapped Rohit Sharma in front and finished off the job when he had captain Virat Kohli miscue a bouncer to the keeper last October in a Group game of the T20 World Cup, a lot has changed in Indian cricket.
Kohli’s reign as captain ended soon, Rohit Sharma was handed the reins, Rahul Dravid took Ravi Shastri’s place in the coach’s hot seat.A slew of experiments followed, in terms of personnel, batting spots but India have stuck to the tried and tested and the few changes have been brought about because of injury. What has changed though is the Indian team’s batting approach – from keeping wickets in hand and waiting to accelerate towards the second half of an innings to going all out from the word go. Over the past year, what has also changed is the shift in balance of power, ever so slightly in Pakistan’s favour. [Read Full Article]
11.Threat of rains & Time collectors
-By Devendra Pandey
Devendra Pandey, our reporter notes from Melbourne: There have been signs of relief with reports predicting it to be a cloudy evening ahead of the match between India and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. There has been a fear of rain since the past few days and many fans have been praying for the weather gods to take a Sunday off. The stadium is expected to be a full house and all tickets have been sold for the marquee clash at the T20 World Cup.
India is set to play Pakistan in their first game of the 2022 T20 World Cup at a sold-out Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday. But the talk around the game in the recent days have centred around the weather and how Melbourne’s climate could play s poilsport. [ Read Full Article]
IND vs PAK: India deploy support staff and extra players across boundary to save time
In its efforts to help accelerate the speed of a cricket game, the International Cricket Council (ICC) in January 2022 implemented the slow over rate penalty in T20I cricket. The slow overrate in T20 Internationals results in a fielder less outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings. It’s an in-match penalty when the bowling team fails to complete the innings by a stipulated time .[ Read Full Article ]

India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2022 Highlights: Virat Kohli single-handedly powered India to an epic four-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan with a magnificent 53-ball 82 not out in their big-ticket T20 World Cup game here on Sunday. Pakistan recovered from a wobbly start to post a fighting 159 for eight. India completed the chase in the last ball, with Kohli and Hardik Pandya (40) doing the bulk of the scoring after a horror start to their innings.
The two revived India with a 113-run stand for the fourth wicket after they were reeling at 31/4 at one stage. Sent in to bat, Pakistan were well served by Iftikhar Ahmed’s 34-ball 51 and Shan Masood’s unbeaten 52 off 42 balls after they lost their first two wickets with just 15 runs on the board in the fourth over.[ Read Full Article ]
13.The Match Report
-By Devendra Pandey
Virat Kohli produced arguably the finest knock of his T20 career to wrap up a seesawing, and often chaotic, thriller. For its sheer drama and quality, emotions and potential controversy, this would be remembered as one of the most thrilling and fascinating games the two sides have produced in their history. The match would whip a deluge of moments and memories in years to come.
Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah were fast and furious; Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar handed out a swing-and-seam bowling masterclass; Ifthikhar Ahmed struck crisp and clean sixes. But in the end, the most enduring image of the game would remain Kohli sprinting to the direction of the dressing room, holding his bat aloft, screaming “come on” and punching the air in an outpouring of pure joy . 14. Anushka relays Home Glee
– By Devendra Pandey
Virat Kohli was on Rohit Sharma’s shoulders, being cradled and swung in celebration, respect, and admiration, with close to 100,000 ecstatic fans screaming their heads off. A moment ago, Kohli was almost in tears, first punching the ground, then taking his helmet off, and raising his index finger to the skies. A release of pent-up emotions after the greatest innings of his career.
It was some sight. Kohli un-bottling, Sharma serenading — two men who aren’t really close friends but have, over the years, acknowledged each other’s greatness. [ Read Full Article ]
15. Emotional Enormous Rollercoaster
– By Sports Team
Till the start of 19th over, India hadn’t hit a six against the formidable pacers. Against the best bowler on the day, Haris Rauf, it was unlikely that India would change that unusual trend. The first four balls didn’t even see a boundary and then on the final two balls, Virat Kohli smoked two sixes that will be talked about for ages. First was all the muscle he punched Rauf straight behind him next to the sidescreen; the next one was pure timing and class. He helped a ball on the legs over the fineleg boundary. In the next over, Kohli once again had to repeat the miracle. This time India needed 13 from 3 balls.[ Read Full Article ]
16.The Virat Show
– By Sriram Veera
Did a tear slip out of Virat Kohli’s eyes after his wondrous chase under pressure? There he was down on his knee, punching the ground twice, as all the bottled-up emotions poured out of him. In an already astonishing career, this chase against Pakistan in a world cup might just take the cake.
It’s a format that doesn’t come naturally to him, he had taken a break as he struggled to come to terms with what he perceived as unjust treatment after his captaincy was taken away (“only MS Dhoni called me,” he would say), and he needed that break to rediscover his love for the game. “I think it was meant to be. I would rate this higher (than Mohali chase against Pakistan),” he would say at the end. [ Read Full Article ]
17. Kohli’s Sixes
Those were not just the most unforgettable sixes he had ever struck in his career, but could also be the most emotional ones too. In days to come, they will be spoken about with the same awe as Sachin Tendulkar ’s iconic six when facing Shoiab Akhtar in yet another intense India-Pakistan game of the 2003 World Cup. 18. Kohli Swat Flick
-By Sriram Veera
How many World Cup sixes by a modern-day Indian batsman can you call iconic and will remember forever and a day? Sachin Tendulkar’s thump over point of Shoaib Akhtar, for sure. MS Dhoni’s thunderous wallop to cap off a perfect Wankhede night. Yuvraj Singh ’s six-orgy off Stuart Broad, perhaps. Anything else? Right on top, alongside Sachin, will sit Virat Kohli’s “freaky” swat-flick of a six against Haris Rauf at MCG.
It’s a variation of a mutant that he had created in the first place from a regular flick. A couple of years ago, Sunil Gavaskar had predicted to this newspaper how Kohli was going to evolve even further with that shot and target newer areas. [ Read Full Article ]
19.The Greatest ‘Leave’
-By Rahul Pandey
Let’s go back to December 2016. Ravichandran Ashwin had just watched Chennai 28 II, for the first time. Sequel of the 2007 Venkat Prabhu directorial based on friendship set against the backdrop of gully cricket. In awe of it, the all-rounder tweeted, “What a wonderful movie ‘Chennai 28 II’. Completely put my life on rewind mode. Genuinely felt I could have been a part of it.”
Little did he know six years later, he would produce a live sequel of the movie that touched him, almost coaxing Mohammed Nawaz into bowling a wide, and eventually leading India’s finish in the T20 World Cup thriller against Pakistan. [ Read Full Article ]

21. Arshdeep shuts Trolls
– By Nitin Sharma & Pratyush Raj
The translation of Arshdeep’s poem is this: “For some, I’m lucky, for some, it’s just a fluke. All they ignore is my hard work. All they talk about is fate and destiny. When time is good, anyone can succeed, but the character is tested when one overcomes tough times. Courageous individuals will not back down easily. And a character like me won’t lose hope in tough times.” [ Read Full Article ]
Ignoring trolls, Arshdeep Singh shows maturity to make impact in maiden T20 World Cup match vs Pakistan
Three hours prior to the clash with Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup in Melbourne, India pacer Arshdeep Singh called up his coach Jaswant Rai. It hadn’t been long since Singh was trolled over social media for dropping a catch during a match against the neighbours in the Asia Cup in UAE, but Rai did not dwell on the past.
He would only speak about Singh’s plans to utilise the big grounds in Australia to his advantage. After the left-armer claimed three wickets, including those of Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and power-hitter Asif Ali with bouncers, the coach recalled preparation and practice sessions mastering the short-pitched stuff .[Read Full Article]
22.Devil’s in the Slower Balls
-By Nitin Sharma
With the cricketing world in awe of Virat Kohli for hitting Pakistani pacer Haris Rauf for two consecutive sixes off the last two balls of the 19th over in the chase of 160 runs, former Pakistan captain and pacer Wasim Akram has highlighted the mistakes done by Rauf and other Pakistani bowlers in the match.
With India requiring 28 runs off the last eight balls, Kohli’s two sixes off the last two balls of Rauf’s fourth over meant that India needed 16 runs to win in the last over. India overhauled Pakistan’s total of 159 in the last over by Mohammad Nawaz after much drama and R Ashwin hitting a boundary off the last ball. [ Read Full Article ]
23. I M Possible: Pandya bro-code
Pandya’s contribution to the win was immense, though his role took a backstage after Virat Kohli’s heroics. Had he not been there, things would have been different. He was pushing Kohli to keep at it and giving hope to the man, who was carrying a billion people’s hopes. [ Read Full Article ]
24 . The Calm after the Storm
REACHING THE team hotel well past midnight, the Indian team, unlike their fans around the world, didn’t have time to celebrate the nerve-jangling World T20 win over Pakistan. Scheduled to catch an early morning flight to Sydney, where they play the Netherlands on Thursday, the cricketers, after playing the game of their lives, had to do the most mundane everyday thing – pack their bags and leave them in the hotel lobby for the logistical staff to ferry them to the airport.
After the warm reception to Rohit Sharma & Co. by the hotel staff and the bus ride from the stadium with fans chasing them, chanting “Kohli, Kohli”, the team retired to the rooms. Their phones were clogged with missed calls and messages, answering all of them would have needed an entire day. [ Read Full Article ]

-By Nitin Sharma
Inzamam made a differentiation between high-scoring batsmen and match-winners in his tribute to Kohli.“Some players cannot win matches despite scoring runs but there are some players who win such matches for their teams single handedly and in pressure. Virat [Kohli] is such a player and has his own class,” Inzamam-ul-Haq said. [ Read Full Article ]
26. Chup kar diya na sabko?
-By Ravi Shastri
Perhaps, it’s best to start with a feeling that I didn’t have when I was watching the greatest T20 knock by Virat: I wasn’t surprised. I was waiting for this to happen. I knew this would happen in Australia. Just check his record here – the pitches suit him plus he loves playing on these grounds and in front of the fans here. His record against Pakistan has always been good and it was a big situation: cometh the hour, cometh the stage, cometh the man. [ Read Full Article ]

T20 World Cup 2022: India vs Pakistan – As it happened
Latest updates from the T20 World Cup Group 2 match between India and Pakistan at the MCG.
- Kohli’s masterclass takes India home in a tense finish.
- Pakistan have now won only two of their last eight matches against India.
- India have won 10 of the 13 T20s both sides have played against each other.
- In 19 matches at the MCG, the team batting second has won 11 times.
It’s a wrap!
So, where do both teams go from here?
India will now head to Sydney, where they play the Netherlands on Thursday.
Pakistan will fly to Perth to regroup and get their campaign back on track. They face Zimbabwe on Thursday. They can take solace in the potent bowling attack they have and should consider today’s result as an anomaly, as most days, their attack can take down any side when on song.
For those who braved the early start like I did, I am grateful for your company and look forward to you joining us next time.

Where did it go wrong for Pakistan?
India looked down and out at 31 for 4 in the seventh over. The spinning tandem of Nawaz and Shadab did well to build on the previous efforts of the pacers as they looked to throttle the run chase.
Pakistan were very much in the driver’s seat and looked to have the match done and dusted when India were staring down the barrel at 54 needed off the final four overs.
Ultimately, it was the pressure of the occasion and the opposition they were facing which proved to be their downfall.
A fatal combination of deciding when to bowl certain bowlers, and bowling error itself, proved to be the difference as the match descended into the final stages.
Kohli’s calculation to take Rauf on in the penultimate over gave India a fighting chance with 16 needed off the final over, before Nawaz suffered a serious meltdown of no-balls and wides to gift India the victory.
Virat Kohli… 82* in 53 balls! 50* in 43 balls, 4 fours, 1 six 32* in 10 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes #T20worldcup22 #T20WC2022 #INDvPAK #PAKvIND — Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) October 23, 2022
Rohit: ‘The best innings Kohli has played for India’
Rohit was in raptures about the man of the moment.
“I have no voice left. We always wanted to make sure we stayed in the game as long as possible. We’ve talked constantly about it. No matter what the situation, you’ve got to believe you can pull through”, he said.
“That partnership [Hardik and Kohli] changed the game for us. We knew it would not be an easy target on that pitch, and that we had to bat out of our skins. Hats off to Virat. It has to go as not one of his best, but the best innings he has played for India.”
Rohit Sharma 🗣 “We were in no position to win this. It is Virat’s best knock playing for India.” Kohli’s knock doesn’t need any validation but Rohit’s statement just sums up how good this effort was! #INDvPAK — Prasenjit Dey (@CricPrasen) October 23, 2022
Babar: ‘Credit to Kohli’
A rather despondent Babar had this to say about the crazy sequence of events which unfolded.
“We started well in our bowling, but then all credit to Hardik and Kohli. They shifted the momentum and finished the game well.
“We had a chance, and I just asked the boys to believe in themselves, but again credit to Kohli. We can take a lot of positives from the way Iftikhar and Masood played, and how we finished the innings.”
Cricket can be very cruel at times, so many ifs & buts, that ball hitting the stumps & going for 3, might have gone for none. Even that might not have mattered, India might have attempted other shots. The margin on the no-ball, it is extremely hard to reconcile with such things > — Rehan Ulhaq (@Rehan_ulhaq) October 23, 2022
Kohli: ‘I have no idea how that happened’
A visibly emotional Kohli did his best to reflect on the stunning change of events.
“I honestly have no words. I have no idea how that happened. Hardik kept telling me to believe and to stay till the end,” he said.
“The calculation was simple. Nawaz had one over to bowl, so if I could take Haris down, they would panic. Till today I said Mohali was my best T20 innings. Then I got 82 off 52 and today I got 82 off 53. Both are just as special but I would count this one higher due to the magnitude of the game.”
It should be no surprise then that he is deemed the Player of the Match .
For his stunning match-winning knock, @imVkohli bags the Player of the Match award. 👏 👏 Scorecard ▶️ https://t.co/mc9usehEuY #TeamIndia | #T20WorldCup | #INDvPAK pic.twitter.com/xF7LfA4Od5 — BCCI (@BCCI) October 23, 2022
India pull off miraculous MCG win!
Have you caught your breath? My fingers are on fire.
Did you ever think the match, when India was teetering at 31 for 4 in the seventh over, would finish in the manner that it did?
Kohli ends up with an unbeaten 82 off 53, which will surely go down as the greatest T20 innings he has played to date, especially when you consider the circumstances and occasion.
One can only doff their hat to superb, under-pressure innings that were timed to perfection.
It was a real masterclass in how to bat and believe even when the situation seems grim.

20 overs. India WIN!
Ashwin is able to clear the infield, as he just needs to find the gap in order to get the quick single.
What an unbelievable game! India were done and dusted, and now you see Kohli sprinting to his teammates as he is clearly battling back a few tears as well.
It just doesn’t get bigger than a World Cup encounter with your rivals to pull off a result like this!
India 160-6 in 20 overs.
19.5 overs. India 159-6
Nawaz delivers another wide!
This is just astonishing. In all my years, I don’t think I’ve seen a team in such a strong position completely fall apart at the seams in the end.
The MCG explodes and India now need 1 off 1 to seal a famous win!
19.5 runs. India 158-6
Nawaz gets his man, although the ball slips down the leg side, which Karthik tries to sweep but ends up hitting his pad.
Rizwan is quickly on it and is able to stump Karthik before he has a chance to regain his ground.
New batsman in will be Ashwin.
India need 2 off 1 now.
19.4 overs. India 158-5
Kohli bowled. But it was a free hit! It doesn’t count.
In the midst of the confusion, the ball escapes behind the keeper in the third-man region, and the batsmen are wise to it as they scamper three useful byes.
It is 2 off 2 now.
19.4 overs. India 155-5
Oh dear, oh dear. What are Pakistan doing?
They are letting this match completely go as Nawaz, with the pressure clearly getting to him, delivers a wide ball well outside off stump.
It is 5 off 2 now.
19.3 overs. India 154-5
This is HUGE.
Kohli gets behind a high full toss from Nawaz, which flies high over deep square leg. And it’s a no-ball!
India get seven off that delivery, and Pakistan will have to re-bowl it.
6 off 3 needed.
19.3 overs. India 147-5
Full, almost yorker length as Kohli is able to get this away down to long-on, with Karthik running like the wind to execute to great success.
13 off 3 now.
19.2 overs. India 145-5
Karthik comes down the track but gets a chest-high full toss which he is able to swat away through the long-on region for a quick single to get Kohli back on strike.
15 off 4 now.
19.1 overs. India 144-5. Hardik out!
Hardik’s vigil comes to an unfortunate end as he tries to send Nawaz out of the ground off the first ball but ends up miscuing high to Babar, who takes it comfortably.
The new batsman is Karthik.
16 off 5 needed
19 overs. India 144-4
Kohli is turning it on at the MCG as, after a few misfires to try and get Rauf away, he is able to slam a short-of-a-length ball straight back over Rauf’s head for six.
He then pulls off an incredible flicked six high over the deep fine leg fielder to end the over in style.
15 welcome runs come off the over as the Indian contingent in the crowd celebrate.
India now need 16 off 6 to pull off an unlikely victory.
As expected, Nawaz is given the final over by Babar. Huge moment here!
Biting your nails yet?
It’s just that kind of finale to that kind of a match…
I can't take this anymore 😭😭 — Nimra (@i_nimra) October 23, 2022
18 overs. India 128-4
Shaheen is brought on and Kohli attacks first ball with a lofted pull over midwicket, which just falls short of the boundary rope.
Kohli is able to pick up another fortuitous boundary and brings up his fifty.
Sixteen off the over as Shaheen finishes his spell with 0-33.
Nawaz still has one over to bowl as Rauf is given the penultimate over. India will want as many as possible now before unleashing into Nawaz off the final over.
32 off 12 now.
17 overs. India 112-4
Naseem is rewarded by bowling out his final over and does well in changing up his lengths and pace to keep the batsmen guessing.
He ends up with fantastic figures of 1-23.
Pakistan are going for the jugular as the boundaries continue to dry up.
48 needed off 18.
16 overs. India 106-4
Naseem replaces Shaheen and is clipped fourth ball by Kohli through fine leg for a boundary.
10 is taken off the over, with the team 100 brought up as well.
Babar turns to Rauf next, who has struck twice already, and the pacer responds by giving up just six runs.
Superb partnership from these two as they have put on 75 for the fifth wicket. Just what the doctor ordered if you are an Indian fan.
54 off 24 required.
The importance of this partnership..
…for both sides.
Hopefully this Patnership doesn't break 🙏🥺 #INDvsPAK — Just writing (@Truth46052848) October 23, 2022
Need one wicket to stop this madness #INDvsPAK #T20WorldCup2022 — Kaizen (@Cheemaay) October 23, 2022
14 overs. India 90-4
After the batsmen lay into Nawaz, Babar smartly elects to bring back on his wrecker-in-chief, Shaheen.
Kohli does pick off a boundary through deep fine leg to help India get nine off the over.
Shadab is given the opportunity to finish his spell next over, and Kohli answers first ball with a back-foot cut through the covers that just beats the long-off boundary rider.
The spinner only gives up four more runs as he finishes with excellent figures of 0-21.
70 off 36 now.
12 overs. India 74-4
Shadab continues for the 11th over, and aside from a drive drilled straight down the ground from Hardik, is able to keep India to nine runs.
Next over, Hardik, after getting enough of a sighter of Nawaz, clears his front leg to register the first six of the innings over deep midwicket.
Kohli follows that with a straight six on before Hardik finishes the over with a mow over long-on for six more.
20 off the over.
86 off 48 required.
As it stands
India need 115 off 60 balls with six wickets in hand.
Kohli and Pandya in the middle. Fans hoping and praying.

T20 World Cup 2024 fixtures, schedule, groups, results and more – a complete guide
The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – formerly, simply the World T20 – is the ninth edition of the tournament in only 17 years and the biggest ever with 20 teams taking part. It is taking place jointly in the Caribbean, for the second time, and the United States which is hosting its first matches in either limited-overs World Cups.
England go into the tournament as defending champions and seeking a third title which would push them ahead of West Indies as the most successful side in T20 World Cup history. England won their first global tournament the last time it was staged in the Caribbean, fighting back from qualifying by the skin of their teeth via a defeat and a washout in the first group stage to win five matches in succession, the last of them a victory over Australia in the final at Kensington Oval which will also host this year’s final in Bridgetown.
Having beaten Pakistan in the final at the MCG two years ago to make themselves double reigning World Cup holders, England’s woeful campaign in the 50-over tournament held in India last autumn has left them merely as solo world champions and engaged in a revamp of their white-ball side under the head coach, Matthew Mott, and captain, Jos Buttler.
When is the T20 World Cup?
The tournament begins on June 1, 2024 and ends with its 55th and last match 28 days later on June 29, 2024.
Where does it take place?
The tournament is shared for the second time (after UAE and Oman stepped in to co-host it during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021), this time by the Caribbean and the US after Cricket West Indies and USA Cricket were successful with a joint bid. The ICC has long identified the US as a prime growth area for the game and was delighted the two boards worked in partnership to secure the hosting rights.
Indeed Paraag Marathe, chair of USA Cricket and Leeds United, said in 2021 when they were named joint-hosts: “The ICC has identified the USA as a strategic market for growth that will benefit cricket around the world. A major event in 2024 will be the critical catalyst to improve facilities, develop a professional league, grow the fanbase and inspire public and corporate support … leaving a legacy of facilities and public enthusiasm for the sport across America ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”
Which venues are hosting matches?
Six grounds in the Caribbean – Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua & Barbuda, Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, Providence Stadium in Providence, Guyana, Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago – will share 39 matches in total.
The remaining 16 ties will take place at three venues across the United States: Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, a temporary venue built at Eisenhower Park, Long Island, New York, Central Broward Park in Lauderhill, Florida and Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
How to watch the T20 World Cup on TV
Like all ICC tournaments during the current rights cycle, the 2024 T20 World Cup will be shown exclusively live on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland. Should England reach the final, as they did in 2022 and the 2019 World Cup, Sky may be persuaded to allow that match to be broadcast live on Channel 4.
In India the tournament will be streamed free on Hotstar.
Which teams have qualified?

Top eight teams from 2022 T20 World Cup
England Pakistan New Zealand India Australia Netherlands South Africa Sri Lanka

The top two in each group will progress to the Super Eight stage which comprises two groups of four with each team playing three games. The top two sides in each of the Super Eight groups will qualify for the semi-finals. the winner of group one playing the runner-up in group two and vice versa.

Captains’ Day lights up the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022
The captains have met and the stage is set for Australia 2022. The 16 skippers made history, coming together in Melbourne for the first time at an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The Captains’ Day marks the start of the eighth edition of the event that promises to keep more than a billion cricket fans across the globe on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
The big one gets underway tomorrow at 15h00 local time when Sri Lanka face Namibia at Geelong’s Kardinia Park Stadium in Group A of the First Round. It is followed by the United Arab Emirates against the Netherlands at 19h00 local time.
This marks the first of 45 matches over 28 days with the champions to be crowned at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 13 November.
Sri Lanka know exactly how it feels to stand on top of the T20 world having taken the title in 2014. They will have to perform well from the start, battling for a Super 12 place from opening day, buoyant after a landmark win in the Asia Cup.
Sri Lanka captain, Dasun Shanaka said: “After a very good Asia Cup, we are very confident. The environment is really good. We are well focused on our batting. As it is the early summer, the conditions will be somewhat different, so we are really focusing on that.
“Apart from that, I think the bowlers, they are really shaping up, so Chameera is back with us and Lahiru Kumara is back with us, so they are plus points coming from the Asia Cup.
“Yeah, it depends on the day. T20 cricket we never know who will be good, when. I think the better teams come out of the day with a win.”
Tomorrow’s opponents, Namibia, made a big impression on their tournament debut in the UAE and Oman in 2021, surging through to the Super 12 stage.
The challenge for Gerhard Erasmus’s side will be to go again without the element of surprise they enjoyed last year, and they will again lean heavily on talisman David Wiese and paceman Ruben Trumpelmann.
Namibia captain, Gerhard Erasmus said : “I guess this year is a bit different to last year. We could sort of ride on that underdog factor and go with it and there's a bit more expectation perhaps this year to go one better.
“Our preparations have been really nice getting to Wangaratta in the countryside of Australia quite early and getting accustomed to things around here. So I guess we'll try and stall the underdog tag for a little bit longer, but yeah, when the real stuff starts, you need to bring the high-level skill that the guys play at the World Cup if we can do that.”
Australia will dearly hope they are the ones to lift the trophy on home soil with a stated aim to become the first team to retain the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Aaron Finch’s side begin their Super 12 campaign with a repeat of last year’s final.
Their eye-catching Trans-Tasman clash with New Zealand at Sydney Cricket Ground on 22 October is set to get the Super 12 off to a flying start.
Their squad boasts a surfeit of experience with middle-order dasher Tim David adding a sprinkle of fresh energy for the title defence.
Australia captain, Aaron Finch said : “Obviously you go into a World Cup knowing that the makeup of your 15 men is really important. It's not just 11 players that win you a World Cup, it's the contribution of all around. I feel as though we've got a really well balanced side. We've got some match winners all throughout the batting lineup and with the ball, as well.
“I think it's just about trying to peak at the right time. There's no point getting caught up with what we should be doing or shouldn't be doing in the lead-up to the tournament. I think it's important that everyone within the squad knows their roles and what role they're most likely to play throughout the tournament, and we can tweak things here and there, but there's a really good feeling in the squad.”
New Zealand have a formidable record at ICC major events. They have reached the last two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup finals, finished third or better at the last two ICC Men’s T20 World Cups and won the inaugural World Test Championship.
New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson said : “We had a pretty memorable World Cup a few months back and played these guys in the final. It was a great game of cricket, and these sorts of tournaments are always pretty special to be a part of.
“Everybody has different tags and rankings that go up and down throughout the year, and I suppose they end up with different names. But you come here in tournament sport on any day, anything can happen, especially looking across all these teams with match winners throughout.”

New York stadium takes shape ahead of T20 World Cup, including India v Pakistan clash
Construction of purpose-built venue at eisenhower park expected to be completed by early next month.
Construction is still under way at the Nassau County International Stadium at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, New York, as it prepares to host matches during the ICC T20 World Cup in June. AFP
The T20 World Cup is a little over one month away with excitement building over what should be an important milestone in the game.
This time, a total of 20 teams will compete in the showpiece event, with sides split into four groups of five. The top two teams in each group will advance to the Super 8 round, and from there to the semi-finals and final.
For the first time, World Cup matches will be held in the US. A total of 16 matches will take place at venues in Lauderhill [Florida], Dallas and New York. The venue in New York – the purpose-built Nassau County International Cricket Stadium – will host the biggest clash of the tournament between India and Pakistan on June 9.
Construction at the 34,000-seat modular venue at Eisenhower Park, Nassau County, is going on with a little over one month to go before its opening match of the T20 World Cup – the June 3 clash between Sri Lanka and South Africa.
The venue will re-use grandstands that were used for the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix and have been repurposed for the T20 World Cup. Also, the pitch that will be used at the ground is a drop-in square – like the ones used in Adelaide – and is being curated in Florida before being transported by road to New York in early May.
The outfield is scheduled to be completed by early next week with the venue construction to end on May 6. After that, a test event will be held at the end of May, following necessary inspection and clearance, before being approved to host World Cup matches.
The venue in New York has been built at a cost of around $30 million, according to Forbes.
Tickets for matches at the venue start at $175 with premium tickets for the India v Pakistan match being offered at exorbitant rates on resale sites.
England will look to defend their T20 World Cup title, which they won after a dramatic final against Pakistan in Melbourne in 2022.
However, England will have to do so without the star of the final Ben Stokes, who has ruled himself out of the T20 competition to focus on becoming a long-format all-rounder again.
Babar Azam has returned as captain of the Pakistan team after a period of turmoil in which Shaheen Afridi was removed as the 20-over skipper.
India, too, will enter the tournament with question marks over the form and future of a number of their ageing stars. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are edging towards the end of their T20 careers, while the form of Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan and Mohammad Siraj is a cause for concern.
The Aussies, meanwhile, will be extremely happy about the form of many of their players. Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis have been in sizzling form in the IPL, even though veteran quick Mitchell Starc has hit a rough patch. Uncapped Jake Fraser-McGurk has dazzled with his hitting ability and should be in the mix, especially since the likes of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh are out of form and injured, respectively.
The T20 World Cup runs from June 1 to 29, with the final in Barbados.

Ravindra, Henry first-timers in Williamson-led NZ squad for T20 World Cup
Kane Williamson will lead New Zealand in the T20 World Cup for the fourth time while opener Devon Conway, recovering from a thumb injury, has also been named in the 15-man provisional squad for the ICC event in USA and Caribbean in June.
The squad led by Williamson was named on Monday at the ANZ Centre here.
Conway was ruled out of the ongoing IPL due to a thumb injury he suffered in February.
Bowler Matt Henry and batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra are the only two members of the 15 without T20 World Cup experience.
This will be Williamson's sixth appearance in a T20 World Cup squad. His experience is bettered only by Tim Southee, who has earned selection in his seventh T20 World Cup squad and currently sits as the leading wicket-taker in the history of T20 Internationals.
Seasoned Trent Boult, who opted out of a NZC central contract, has been selected in his fifth T20 World Cup squad.
The squad also boasts significant recent experience in the conditions with 13 of the 15-man group featuring in the team's last tour to the West Indies in 2022.
As well as that, six of the squad members have also featured in the Caribbean Premier League T20 competition.
Alongside the 15 players selected in the tournament squad, pace bowler Ben Sears will travel and train with the team as an injury cover.
Adam Milne was ruled out following surgery to repair an ankle injury, and Kyle Jamieson was also unavailable for selection as he continues to rehabilitate his back injury.
"I'd like to congratulate everyone named today. It's a special time representing your country at a world tournament," said Blackcaps head coach Gary Stead.
"We expect the venues in the West Indies to offer quite varied conditions and feel we've selected a squad with the scope to adapt to those conditions."
Stead said he was delighted to name two first timers in Henry and Ravindra.
"Matt has worked exceptionally hard on his skills across the phases of a T20 game to come back into selection consideration," he said.
"Rachin has made every post a winner in the past 12 months and it was exciting to see him continue that trajectory over the summer in the T20 format against Australia."
Kane Williamson (C), Finn Allen, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee.
