How to Beat Fatalis

Players need to beat Alatreon in the Dawn's Triumph special assignment to unlock Fatalis's special assignment, The Black Dragon .

Alatreon Weakness and Strategy Guide

Fatalis Weakness, Body Parts, and Resistances

Fatalis Weaknesses

Fatalis's weakest body part is its head , which players should aim to break to mitigate his breath attacks. Fatalis is weakest to dragon element weapons, followed by fire. However, for this fight, we recommend maximizing your damage as the quest only has a thirty-minute timer .

Use Dragon Element Weapons

Use Dragon Element weapons against Fatalis to maximize your damage output as Fatalis has a high weakness to the Dragon Element.

Aim for the Head

When fighting Fatalis, players should deal as much damage as possible to the head. It is extremely important to be able to break the Head of the Fatalis twice. Doing this will not only guarantee a Fatalis Evil Eye material but it will also significantly decrease the damage of Fatalis' Breath Attacks .

Cannon Use and Setup

Cannons can be used to knock down Fatalis during the first phase of the hunt. Players will need to hit Fatalis with 7 cannon balls while having a Lvl. 2 Heavy Artillery skill active to successfully knock him down.

For a perfect cannon setup, move the right cannon to the right once , then move the left cannon to the right thrice . Fire the right cannon first and wait for Fatalis's roar to finish before moving to the left cannon. Fire the left cannon and drop down for a free DPS window on Fatalis's head.

Roaming Ballista Use and Setup

The Roaming Ballista will be accessible during the 2nd phase of the hunt, we recommend hitting Fatalis on its chest as it deals higher damage compared to Fatalis's head. Players can also use Smoke Bombs to make Fatalis land on the ground and have an easier time hitting it compared to when it's flying.

If players do not have a Lvl. 2 Heavy Artillery equipped they can still knockdown Fatalis by using the Roaming Ballista in the second phase of the hunt. However, players must also hit Fatalis with at least 7 cannon balls during the first phase.

Use the Dragonator

Fatalis - Use Dragonator

After using the Dragonator, Proof of a Hero will play in the background, signifying that victory is near.

Use One-shot Binders

You can use the One-shot Binder ammo to tie down the Fatalis to prevent it from moving, giving you a free DPS window to destroy its head.

Use Dragon Pods to Disrupt

Dragon Pods are important in this fight as they can be used to disrupt Fatalis's moves that you have a hard time dodging. It is also important to use for Fatalis's final phase where it traps your teammate; simply fire two Dragon Pods to free your teammate.

Fatalis drops Dragon Pods when you tenderize any part of his body. Note that heavy weapons need the Clutch Claw Boost skill to drop slinger ammo.

Second Phase Breath Attack

Once the Fatalis' HP drops below 80% , the Research Commission's Commander will warn the players to hide from the Fatalis' big attack. Players must immediately run to the iron wall on the East side of the area to survive the attack. Failing to do so will instantly kill any players caught in the attack.

During this phase, the Dragonator half of the area will be unlocked and players will now have access to the Roaming Ballista and the One-shot Binder Ammo. Players now have to attack the Fatalis until its HP drops below 50%.

Third Phase Breath Attack

Once the Fatalis' HP drops below 50% , players have to use the Barrier behind the Dragonator to hide from the Fatalis' next big attack. Failing to activate and hide behind the Barrier will instantly kill any players caught in the attack.

During this phase, players will now be able to use the Dragonator after a few minutes. This is also the Final Phase of the Fatalis fight. Players need to break the Fatalis' head twice to significantly reduce the damage of his breath attacks.

Once the Fatalis' HP drops below 40% and 20% , players have to run towards Fatalis' side to be safe from this attack. Failing to do so will instantly kill any players caught in the attack.

The Fatalis will do this attack twice during the third phase of the Fatalis Fight. To significantly decrease the damage of this attack, players need to break the Fatalis' Head twice.

Cone Breath Attack

Players can take advantage of this move by attacking Fatalis's head during the duration of the move. Be careful as Fatalis will drop an exploding fireball under his head after the cone breath.

This is the first of many breath attacks that can kill the player extremely quickly. Fatalis will unleash this breath attack in a cone shape in front of them. The player can evade this attack by running to the Fatalis' side or hiding behind one of the protruding rocks in the area. Fatalis only does this attack when it is standing on both hind legs.

Triple Fireball

Fatalis will stand on its hind legs and fire three fireballs slowly; take advantage of this move by attacking Fatalis's chest while he does this move.

Charged Fireball

Fatalis often uses this move against players who are far away and players who are on siege weapons. Watch out for Fatalis's mouth; when it glows slowly with fire, that is your queue to drop everything and dodge.

Vertical Breath Attack

Fatalis looks directly downwards, breathing fire after a short delay. Avoid this attack by running away from the flame radius or clutching onto Fatalis.

Sweeping Breath Attack

Take advantage of this move by positioning between Fatalis's hind and forelegs and attacking its chest.

In this breath attack, Fatalis does an area sweep with his breath. Players can easily evade this by doing a Superman dive before the breath hits them. Fatalis only does this attack when they are standing on all four legs.

NOTE : Hiding behind one of the protruding rocks will still damage the player in this attack.

360° Breath Attack

Take advantage of this move, by dodging towards the flame as soon as Fatalis's head starts moving. If you dodge correctly this move can be a huge DPS window.

In this breath attack, Fatalis will charge up his breath and fire a breath attack that will sweep the area in all directions. This is similar to the Sweeping Breath Attack and can be easily evaded by doing a Superman dive before the breath hits.

Fatalis will breathe fire for a short duration, placing a line of firebombs that have a delayed explosion. Fatalis can do this attack close in front, on his sides, and far in front.

Fatalis will make a fake knockdown, queued by a short period of it standing then crashing his body forward. Note that there are instances when this attack can hit you even if you are behind Fatalis or on its sides.

Fatalis will do a short dash forward, dealing damage to any hunters in front and on his sides. Be careful as he can do this move repeatedly in quick succession.

Fatalis will charge at a target player at high speed, dealing damage and knocking back any hunter on its path. You can avoid this attack by running or dodging to the side as Fatalis cannot change the direction of this attack.

Carvings and Hunt Rewards

Rewards for each body part, shiny drops, quest clear rewards, plunderblade rewards, plunderblade.

Fatalis Combat Guide

Facing the legendary black dragon, Fatalis, demands a keen understanding of its strengths and vulnerabilities. Being immune to stun, Fatalis requires a strategic approach, and hunters should focus on specific areas, such as the head (Red), forearms (Orange), hindlegs (White), and tail (Green), to maximize damage.

The battle with Fatalis unfolds in distinct phases, each marked by devastating nova attacks. The initial nova occurs when Fatalis loses around 22% of its health, prompting hunters to seek shelter. Subsequent novas, triggered at different health thresholds, demand strategic positioning and evasive maneuvers. After the second nova, Fatalis enters its third phase, intensifying its attacks and gaining a glowing chest, indicating increased danger.

Prioritizing the breaking of Fatalis's head is crucial to weaken its attacks in the third phase. The arena provides numerous siege weapons, including cannons, ballistae, a roaming ballista, and the Dragonator. Coordinated use of these resources, along with Heavy Artillery to boost siege weapon damage, can create crucial openings for sustained attacks. Knocking down Fatalis up to two times is achievable through substantial damage from siege weapons.

The Dragonator, a potent tool in the arena, deals damage equivalent to 5% of Fatalis's total health with each use. Flinch shotting Fatalis when it stands on two feet causes it to go down on all fours, enabling efficient wall slams. Dragon Pods play a pivotal role in disrupting Fatalis's attacks, causing a flinch and interruption with every second shot.

In the third phase, Fatalis introduces a pinning attack, pinning a player to its chest. Teammates can use Dragon Pods to flinch Fatalis and release the pinned player, highlighting the importance of teamwork. Additionally, hunters must be cautious of Fatalis's anti-clutch-claw mechanism, triggering a punishing move if the hunter clutches during a brief opening.

Surviving Fatalis's relentless onslaught requires a well-prepared endgame setup. Recommended skills include Health Boost, Divine Blessing, Fire Resistance, Blight Resistance, Coalescence, Agitator, and Partbreaker. Strategic timings for binders and Roaming Ballista shots, along with various tactics like cone-baiting, smoke hiding, and canteen food skills, offer hunters diverse approaches to conquer this formidable foe. While a dedicated healer with Wide-Range may aid less experienced groups, maintaining a balance in damage output is essential to avoid time limits or reaching Phase 3 without breaking Fatalis's horns.

Fatalis Combat Tips

  • You can fight Fatalis after you've completed the Iceborne storyline (MR24), discovered the Guiding Lands, encountered Safi'jiiva and encountered Alatreon.
  • You will unlock this quest by first talking to the Excitable A-Lister near the start of Seliana. This will take you on a quest to defeat an Alatreon with much less health than normal. After you have defeated Alatreon , you will obtain the quest " The Black Dragon " as a special assignment.
  • The Special Assignment version of the quest allows for up to 5 carts, the Event Quest version ( Fade to Black ) only for up to 3.
  • First Nova : Fatalis will do the first area wide flame breath after losing about 22% of his health. You can only hide from this in a shelter on the right side of the arena, which is the same area you ran to with your NPC companion during the solo cutscene. After this nova the back of the arena will be unlocked, which includes multiple more siege weapons.
  • Second Nova : Performed after losing 50% of his health. You can only survive this one by running at the gate in the back of the arena and pulling the lever before the big flame comes out. Fatalis will enter his 3rd and final phase after this one.
  • Third/Fourth/Fifth Nova : Performed when Fatalis has 38%/20%/5% health left. You need to run towards Fatalis in order to avoid it. Since the Nova is cone shaped, it is recommended to run towards the sides rather than the center to get out of it faster.
  • After the second Nova, Fatalis will have a glowing chest. During this phase he gains new attacks (of which one can pin you) and all of his attacks become much more dangerous.
  • Breaking Fatalis's head once will weaken the attacks in the 3rd phase. Breaking it twice will reduce the damage even more(back to the same damage from phase 1 and 2).
  • The arena for the fight has multiple siege weapons, including three cannons, two ballistae, a roaming ballista and the Dragonator. There are also two one-shot binders (one near the wall behind the roaming ballista and the other one behind the ballista on the opposite side of the arena) that can be used to restrain Fatalis. Note that Fatalis tends to focus any player trying to operate siege weaponry.
  • Fatalis will be knocked down up to two times if he received enough damage through siege weapons. The first knockdown will happen after 1000 damage, the second one after 3000 damage. Heavy Artillery  will increase the damage from siege weapons making it easier to knock down Fatalis with the siege weapons.
  • Each head of the Dragonator will deal damage equivalent to 5% of Fatalis's total health. Note that the Dragonator hitbox is much bigger than it looks.
  • Flinch shotting Fatalis when he's standing on two feet will cause him to go down on all fours. Only in this position Fatalis can be wall-slammed.
  • Every second Dragon Pod shot on Fatalis will make him flinch and interrupt his current attack. Fatalis will naturally drop dragon pods throughout the hunt, but you can also make him drop them through clutch attacks.
  • Starting from Phase 3 (after the 2nd nova), Fatalis can perform a pinning attack that pins a player on its chest. Since it's a deadly move and cannot be escaped once a player gets pinned. It is suggested that the teammates use Dragon Pods to flinch Fatalis and let it release the pinned player.
  • Fatalis has an anti-clutch-claw mechanism. If Fatalis is standing on its two legs and the hunter clutches onto it during an opening that's too short, it may perform a lying-down punishment move that pins the hunter onto the ground. This move comes with a very short opening afterward, so the hunters might very likely get carted by the next attack. If the hunter has Dragon Pods on them, it's recommended to use them to stagger Fatalis when getting pinned. The lying-down pinning move can also be triggered by doing enough damage to its chest, but if not triggered by clutch claw punishment, it will give a longer opening afterward to allow the hunter to escape the next attack.
  • Because Fatalis is the hardest fight in the game, it is not recommended to tackle it until you have access to a fully optimized endgame setup, if possible with health augment for melee weapons (only unlocked after MR100 for R12 weapons).

Recommended Skills

  • Health Boost:  Fatalis hits extremely hard and several of his attacks can even one shot melee players.
  • Divine Blessing:  See above.
  • Fire Resistance:  Almost all of his attacks are fire based and inflict Fireblight.
  • Blight Resistance:  Use Blight Resistance if Fire Resistance of 20 or above is not possible for your build.
  • Coalescence:  An almost guaranteed damage boost provided you aren't immune to Fireblight.
  • Agitator:  Fatalis stays enraged rather long, so this is a good damage boost.
  • Partbreaker:  Makes it easier to break his head.
  • Heavy Artillery:  Increases the damage dealt with ballistae and cannons.

Popular Strategies

  • Cannon opening:  Recommended only for players unexperienced in the fight. In the beginning of the hunt, put on Ghilie Mantle, enter the battle field, fully load the two cannons on the platform, push them rightward (the left one twice, the right one once), and then fire the cannon toward Fatalis (the right one first, and then the left one). Ghilie Mantle expires as soon as the cannon is fired, so the player needs to slot Heavy Artillery 2 on the main armors. This strategy will knockdown Fatalis and offer a long opening for the player to attack the head. It's not generally a good strategy since loading cannon balls takes time, Fatalis is not enraged so cannot activate Agitator, and the players need to do tenderization during the precious opening.
  • Roaming Ballista knockdown : Right after the 1st nova (the beginning of phase 2), run to the Roaming Ballista and use Smoke Bomb to hide, wait for Fatalis landing, put on Temporal Mantle with Heavy Artillery 2 on it, and then shoot Fatalis' chest. If the hunt didn't start with cannon opening, this should be able to knock it down (if not, some following shots of normal ballista will do), and offer an opening to break the head. A variation of the strategy is to use cannon opening with cannon balls less than the knockdown threshold, and then use Roaming Ballista to knock it down in just a few shots, so that the remaining shots can go to its head. Whichever version being used, it's better that Fatalis' head and chest are tenderized at the end of Phase 1.
  • Binders : It's generally suggested not to use binders until Phase 3 (after the 2nd nova), since Fatalis is more aggressive from then on. A popular timing for the 1st binder is right after the 2nd nova, when Fatalis is by default flying, and a binder can take it down and give the players an opening to break the head. However, the player needs to roll-dodge the opening roar of Phase 3, or use Smoke Bomb to hide from Fatalis, or the player will be very vulnerable when trying to use the binder. When to use the 2nd binder depends on the hunt. It can be used immediately after the 1st one if the head hasn't been broken, or used when Fatalis tries to fly.
  • Cone-baiting : Cone fire is a move that offers a precious opening for attacking the head. Experienced players often try to bait this move by standing at a distance in front of Fatalis. It's easier when soloing and without the Palico.
  • Smoke hiding : Smoke Bomb make Fatalis lose track of you and perform a "looking for target" animation, which is a useful opening for attacking the chest. It also forces Fatalis to land when it's flying, if all the players smoke hide. Notably, the timing of smoke hiding is quite tricky, and a totally hidden group might trigger Fatalis' strong roar when it sees the players again.
  • Canteen food skills : Normally, it's suggested to get Felyne Safeguard and Felyne Insurance for this fight, especially in multiplayer hunts.
  • Wide-range healer : For a group with unexperienced players, a healer using Wide Range might save the group. However, note that a dedicated healer might significantly lower the damage output of the whole party, and thus increase the risk of a Phase 3 without horn break, or the hunt reaching the time limit. SnS is the popular choice of weapon for a healer, since the player can drink potion without sheathing the weapon by using the radial menu.

special assignment fatalis

special assignment fatalis

important notes: when fatalis did a flame cone attack and you cant get out from it, its best to spam leap of faith and hope you survive it. i see a lot of hunter die from it

When a easy boss with simple attacks becomes suddenly hard because 1 trillion health... just crapcom things

My favorite wall in a video game. He's tough but feels fair. Now, the two big fish in the well of the Bloodborne DLC? That's a BS fight.

If you're having trouble with fighting this monster just remember: It's still a monster, so its head must be it's weakness.

Why people don't like Fatalis is beyond me. Sure, it has a lot of health, deals tons of damage and the quest limit is only 30 minutes. Big deal, he's supposed to be hard, he's the final boss. He doesn't force you to switch your hard farmed gear for an arbitrary mechanic like Alatreon, he doesn't spam Charybdis like Behemoth, he doesn't summon the entire jagras nation like Ancient Leshen, he isn't constantly hopping or flying around the area. It's an hard fight where you only have to learn about the monster and improve yourself, that's the entire point of Monster Hunter. And Fatalis is the peak example of this, one of the best fight in Iceborne and the best iteration of Fatalis ever. And the special assignment quest give you 5 carts, there's not even the need to grind The Guiding Lands. I suck at this game and I was able to solo him without Fatalis gear and without weapon augmentations.

I want to cry

Ridiculously boring for a final fight. If he didn't do a **** ton of damage I'd probably fall asleep fighting him

Fatalis is such an amazing fight. Brutal and punishing, yet fair in most ways. Like all monsters, the only unfair thing about his fight is just how random his AI can be despite cheese options. Occasionally he'll just wind something up that you have no chance against. That combined with big hitboxes makes parts of the fight a pain, but that's the only issue I have with the fight itself. My main complaint is about the hunt. That complaint comes from that damn 30 minute timer. I've shaved this guy down to the wire so many times just to lose to time. I've played out of my mind just to lose to a dps check. It sucks when I'm just a few hits away from a kill and lose because my stopwatch alarm went off. I know there's the whole "just play better", "git gud" stuff going on here, but man that timer is the most brutal part of the fight. Even if you're good at the fight. Makes me feel like I wasted my time. Otherwise it's an outstanding hunt and one of the best from MHW.

Just cheat Dishonest fights require dishonest solutions

Heavy Artillery skill works on the dragonator! Abuse it!

After finally beating him, I would say, fatalis is unfun and a hate him, but he is fair

fire dragon weak to fire LOL

wow, divine blessing 5 is broken also, if you're a freak like me who found AT Velkhana wayyyyy easier I bet her headpiece is pretty good here with all the fireblight

Oh, so you're a Monster Hunter fan? Explain Fatalis lore.

sometimes while wearing the gihil mantle he may turn around and shoot at the cannons. be warned it can and might happen.

I am not complaining this battle is hard, just unfair. The hitboxes are gigantic and can easily 2 shot you at 200 health. Also, if you're trying to make it flinch it will probably do that burning attack that just hits right under it, this wouldn't be so bad if the Fatalis' collisions WOULDN'T LET ME escape the AOE. I either have skill issue or it's just unfair,

Lmao, I broke his chest while he was doing the straight-down flamethrower, he flinched backwards but the damage kept ticking without the animation.

You can get Large Elder Dragon Gem from him, just got it. Also the first time i ever got it

Not fun. Got him to phase 3 though, i will beat his ass eventually

Ive learned to watch for his charged flame breath, he stops strangely, he is often very active, despite being slow. And his mouth keeps glowing. That move tends to one shot people with poor gear/ no guiding lands max augment. Im more successful rolling towards his back, diagonally. Take note of his long breath attacks, those are the moments to clutch him and tenderize or wall bang him. As long as you dont dive into the flame, ( chest, then hop to head is often safe). That move, plus cone attacks are also great times to snipe his head. But you have to know where to be, ( head for cone, neck/ near chest for all fours breath, so it runs into your swinging weapon) and when to leave, before you get hit. If you wall bang him while he is standing, you can damage him a little if there is some rock to hit his head as he bends down. Then, if you are fast, you can properly wall bang him before he decides to stand up.

super flame breath into revive from cat into another super flame breath. i hope the devs drive safely and do not get into a freak accident

I know that Fatalis is supposed to be the final boss of mhw, but, there is no excuse about how terribly designed his fight is. This fight REQUIRES you to bring abilities such as Divine blessing to make this fight doable, since All attacks from Fatalis do ridiculously high damage (not saying he should do less damage, just saying that he does twice the damage of Alatreon, with a weak attack) and most of them have the potential to one-shot you. But the ridiculously high damage is only PART of the problem, because Fatalis has the jankiest hitboxes off all the game, which makes his fight all more tedious and annoying. The other problem with Fatalis is that he can AND will spam the same attack over and over and over again, since he has little to no attacks, which causes that his AI uses the same movement repeatedly until you change position. But the real problem with Fatalis is that it can be easily defeated with cheese strats, which show how broken this fight is, and make using any other strategy more time consuming than anything. Now that i’m done complaining, I will tell you some tips for beating up this freakin a##hole SOLO without going insane. 1) Break at least 1 time the head so his flame attacks don’t one shot you 2) Bring the Perks agitator, critical eye, and tenderizer, they will make your life easier when it comes to damaging Fatalis 3) if you use a light weapon (lonsword, dual blades, etc…) you MUST make sure you have a shaver jewel in your build , because you will need it for softening Fatalis’ skin. And lastly: 4) Bring Fortify to the fight, if Fatalis kills you by any reason, this skill is a must to have, since it skyrockets both your defense and attack to crazy levels, so it helps a lot if keep fainting on fatalis. That’s all, thanks for reading all that and good luck against Fatty I mean Fatalis.

I'd recommend either beating fatalis solo first, or only play with specific hunters who know what they're doing. Many inexperienced players join fatalis quests unprepared thinking whoever posted it will carry them and usually cart pretty quickly. I'd avoid SOS signals for this reason.

Very annoying and exhausting fight during multi-player, especially if you are carrying your team by yourself with Wide-range/Friendship decoration. Fatalis is smart and aims for YOU because you are saving everyone else's asses, so be aware whenever you have Friendship 5 deco, this damn thing will follow you like crazy to try to cart you all the time. The fight in multi-player is much easier if 2 teammates have Friendship 5, but unfortunately that's not very common and realistic. However, if you are playing with a friend let them know beforehand so you both can have Wide-range and save your entire team and carry each other til the end. *** Important decorations for the fight regardless of your weapon: *** - Health Boost 3 (must have, he can K.O. you with a single blast even wearing this deco, not wearing it isn't an option unfortunately) - Divine Blessing 3-5 (if possible 5 either with 2 pieces of the Gold Rathian set or 2 pieces of the Fatalis set if you managed to grab the materials to forge it) - Evade Window 5 - Evade Extender 3 - Steadfast 3 (Stun resistance 2 is mortal against Fatalis. The few seconds you spend trying to recover from the stun, he WILL ruthlessly cart you) **Useful decorations you should try to fit to make your life easier** - Heavy Artillery 2 (remember it's a shorter fight than usual: 30 min and you'll use a lot of ballistae/cannons during it) - Partbreaker 3 to break his head faster and avoid instant deaths on his final phase - Wide-range/Friendship 5 if you are on multi-player, but as I mentioned earlier: Fatalis will try to kill you all the time for carrying your entire team lol be aware you will need to dodge him like the plague and to have more experience to know his moves set - If fit: Coalescence or Agitator/Challenger ***Armor***: I'd definitely recommend wearing 2 pieces of the Gold Rathian set + 3 pieces of the Alatreon set (to give you Divine Blessing 5 + the Alatreon chest piece will give you Health Boost 3 and the elemental resistance with 3 pieces = +20% of fire resistance) Or if you already got some Fatalis parts to forge another option: 2 Fatalis set pieces + 3 Alatreon set pieces Some people recommend 3 pieces of Raging Brachy set + 2 pieces of Gold Rathian, but I'd definitely try getting 3 pieces of the Alatreon set + the Alatreon weapon before facing Fatalis **Specialized Tools**: - Temporal Mantle (if upgraded use Attack, Defense or Expert decorations) - Rocksteady or Ghillie Mantle (Ghillie is used a lot to load the cannons. Don't forget that during the 2nd and 3rd phases there's still a canon on the right side of the map, by the roaming ballista. Most people neglect it and simply don't use it... if you are opting for the Ghillie, use this canon as well) - DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE HEALTH BOOSTER (All the times I used it or saw people using it, it seems everyone gets desperate and distracted to get some HP restored and cause agglomeration, which makes Fatalis to cart everyone even faster lol I know it sounds stupid and nonsensical but it happens all the time lol) **Remember**: Fatalis is a completely different fight and will make you angry and frustrated even if you killed every single monster of the game before him. Don't give up, it's not easy but once you get used to his movements and attacks, you'll bring him down. It took me A LOT of tries. Unfortunately it's a trial and error fight, and a good team can help you stay alive until the very end. **One last tip**: use the dragon pods he drops to make him instantly flinch and stop attacks. I see a lot of players not getting the slinger ammo on the floor, which imo is a waste. Please grab and use them as much as you can! They can save your team from his flames, especially that annoying cone shape attack that can cart everyone instantly...

this monster is actually much and far easier than alatreon. alatreon punish you if you're not hitting the vibe check which is dumb.

i find this monster much easier than alatreon somehow. anyone agree?

I'm still very far away from fighting this guy but the moment I saw that palico armor I just knew that I'll have to nerd my ass off playing against this thing in the future.

Farmed the Alpha and Beta armors, and three maxed weapons from this guy. Fatalis is the single most terribly designed fight in Iceborne, and its gear is so brokenly OP it makes every hunt not Fatalis a total joke. Maxed health, stamina, every damage skill, Divine Blessing 5, and you still have plenty more room to fit more decorations. You just stat check everything and can never die. And the Fatalis fight itself is miserable. Health Boost 3, Divine Blessing 3, 20+ Fire Resistance, 1000+ defense and you still get one shot if Divine Blessing doesn't proc. 30 minute timer, required usage of the janky artillery because it doesn't get knocked down or stunned otherwise, no Claggers (so you HAVE to burn Mantles to Tenderize), FIVE boring cutscene attacks (As if Safi wasn't bad enough), and a flinch counter that pins you. I wouldn't bother unless you REALLY like completionism.

easy to beat when you dont try to speed run him and know what to do.

tip: Leap of faith or dive only happens when running in the opposite direction of this fata##

Just beat him with 3 seconds remaining

Not sure if someone else said this before, but any weapon that can block (even barely) is very strong agaisnt his cone breath attack. Even a bare Greatsword, without any points with the Guard skill, is able to block most of the damage and create a safe space for teammates who may be behind you. If you're caught in that attack, and you don't have time to spam the superman dodge, then this is a better alternative.

The only fight that’s easiest solo lmao

Heavy artillery 2 in your rocksteady mantle and temporal mantle if you have the upgrades, that guarantees a strong opening with the cannons(provided you snuck with the ghillie mantle to load them before the fight) and allows you to take advantage of the roaming ballista, You'll be just fine as long as you break at least one of it's horns before phase 3.

This Monster is an utterly dumb try to get a challenging bossfight by taking every single dial and cranking it up to 11. There is a reason why Alatreon is seens as way more fun to fight because hes actually challenging. Its a tight balance of not taking too much dmg and at the same time being relentless with your own attacks. While Fatalis only justification of being "challenging" is unreasonably giant hitboxes and beeg numbers *drools in dev*

Fire resistance does absolutely nothing to mitigate it's fire massive damage, you are better off getting evade window and evade extender.

It's... way smaller than I thought...

Still haven’t beaten it and it has been a year. Actually it has been longer than that. I can’t play with other people and I am stuck. Should I be taking palico or not? Are the Dual Blades a good weapon for him? I always get him to the last phase but I take to long. I use Alatreon weapons and armor. Are there other weapons I should consider? I have one peace of his armor and I use it but it isn’t enough. I have tried grinding for his armor but I never break the face a second time. I have done everything that people have said but I still can’t do it. Do you guys have anything else to say?? I know not giving up is the hardest part and I don’t plan on letting him have this victory. I really need some advice. Thanks in advance! ~ Eriatha

Assuming anyone is trying to get the eye to drop. in both phases just keep trying to bait out his "cone" attack which is the one that covers a large part of the arena is a sort of dust fire that ticks your health down over time. If you can bait that and remain close to him it leaves his head exposed and low enough for you to get a good combo in just adjust the amount of hits you do since when he finishes he also leaves a small pool of fire that detonates. In phase 2 you also have the roaming ballista, if you focus his head you can deal some good damage to it, i wouldn't suggest using the cannons since they usually just hit his body and not his head. Other than that try to also fit all 3 levels of part breaker since they help immensely in reducing the amount of damage required to get both breaks. Theres really no fool proof and cheesy way of doing it without risks unless you want to spend hours trying your luck with the palico plunder blade. Just do your best to avoid his attacks and attack only the head since it reduces the odds of going into phase 2 or even 3 without having broken the head completely.

What armor helps for fatalis if you don’t have alatreon or safi

On hit tail hit?come on!

Wait…how is he (it) weak to fire?

So here is a problem I have with him. Every time I go for the head I lose to running out of time but when I don’t run out of time I faint. What should I do?? I can’t play events so don’t say anything that mentions them. Here are the skills I use with Alatreon armor: Attack Boost lvl7 Defense Boost lvl7 Resentment lvl4 Health Boost lvl3 Evade Window lvl3 Dragon Resistance lvl3(This comes with Alatreon) Stun Resistance lvl3 Crit Boost lvl2 Tremor Resistance lvl2 Heavy artillery lvl2 Affinity Sliding lvl1 Free Meal lvl1 Fortitude lvl1 Constitution lvl1 And Resuscitate lvl1 I did this from memory so this probably isn’t 100% accurate. I use the Alatreon Beta with Alatreon DBs. I will literally refuse to use any other weapon. I have been getting way better at fighting him to the point of where I got to the last nova and break almost everything(I didn’t break the head twice). Please tell me what to do! I really am stuck! That would be appreciated! Thanks in advance and Happy Hunting ~ Eriatha

First down afer 1000 siege dmg is bullshit. much more needed

Stop being frustrated that you have to kill him solo. He has way less health solo and random teammates will often fack everything up anyway.

The real boss is that dumb 30 min. timer.

*shoot clutch claw at the wing* *goes to an arm* ... *shoot at the tail* *goes to the back leg* ...

"alright it's the full fire sweep attack. time to superman dive" *rolls* *dies*

So do you guys have any tips for him. I have seen people say don’t mess up the dragonator and I already have Alatreon armor and Dual blades. I can’t seem to get to the dragonator. I just suck that badly. I know I am supposed to break the head but they just seem indestructible. I don’t have PS plus so I can’t play with other players. So if you guys have any tips that would help I would really appreciate it! Happy hunting! ~ Eriatha

I just beat Fatalis for the first time and my adrenaline high has lasted longer than 6 hours. Should I call a doctor?

I want To die. I just ran out of time after getting him under 2k hp solo.

I just want to say that remember failing is part of the game, multiple times of fail is expected, just keep going, you can do it!

half the arena is filled with water on the floor, so you can lose fireblight with just one roll and proc coalescence easily. you dont really need fire or blight resist

What is a good armor set to use?

Best tip: Don't **** up the dragonator

special assignment fatalis

Best weapon is Alatreons switch axe Black Harvest. You can claw to the head and deal massive damage nonstop thanks to the dragon element. Its power element phial also fills up extremely fast so you will need only a few hits to get back in the air, continuing working on the horns. This way you break the head, weaken Fatalis attacks 2nd phase and be save most of the time from the dangers on the ground. Equip Golden Lunemail and Lunecoil for Devine Blessing +5, for Helm, hands and legs use Brachydios gear and the Challenger Charm +5 to get Agitator+7. Raise your health to the max and equip partbreaker and Heavy Artillery+2. The moving Ballista is Fatalis' Nemesis and will deal an insane amount of damage. Make sure to use a binder beforehand so you can get clean hits. DON'T waste them and wait until the Balista is ready again! Make sure you wallbang Fatalis as often as possible too. Breaking the horns is top priority! The static ballistas can stun Fatalis if you hit the head a couple of times. Giving you another chance to break the horns. If Fatalis gets fully hit by the Dragonators it will double the damage, potencialy ending the battle so keep that in mind. Your meal should raise your elemental ress. Happy eyes farming!

How to kill fatalis: 1 Valstrax fighrt jet. 4 Seregios Snipers. 9 Bazel Bomber, There, EZ, Oh, and 1 Safi Nuke.

Lol if you think this guy is hard, play elden ring.

Does he ever get exhausted?

He's got a lot of issues. Hitboxes are off for a bunch of his attacks. He also has autoaim on his fireballs. Another thing is that no matter your defense and res he one shots you. Still better than Alatreon imo

Needs to be nerfed not a fun fight in the slightest.

Hallo all you fine folks out there! I found a harder opponent than fatalis in monster Hunter world... It's the Azure rathalos found in arena quest 7. I'm not kidding here.

Beat him first time with fortify, azure age armor, and Alatreon bow. Took like 20 mins though. Evade extender and evade window with a dab of constitution aside from def, divine bless, and fire res.

Fatalis? more like Fatality :#

Fairly good challenge tbh. Took me a year and half to solo from the time I could do him. He's pretty cool I guess? Alatreon still is my favorite of the two big baddies. Overall 8/10 experience. If you're having trouble soloing him building a switch axe build to ZSD spam him is an excellent option

I got him with frostfang barioth spread 3 light bow gun. It took 25 minutes with 2 carts. I would have killed it in 15 minutes but farming for the right decorations becomes more aggravating than the fatalis fight itself. Lastly to anyone reading this if you can't win this fight it's ok, you did your best and that is good enough for me, I mean it and the people who throw hate at you... those haters are nothing more than animals that are worse than fatalis with no lives of their own. Live long and stay strong!

took friggin 2 years to kill him,ok now time to farm him surely this wont take 10 years to make his full armor set right?

all the asshurt in these comments is so funny lmao

Finally won...Hardest boss man, 30 minutes is so annoying

Beat him with spread 3 lbg in 18 minutes.

I am currently trying to kill him with solo hunting horn, I haven’t got to the last nova yet but I’m sooo close. The micromanaging of melodies, sharpness, cooldown times, and dps is hell, but I knew what I was signing up for. I’m just venting a bit, but if your reading this and haven’t beat him yet either; keep at it, we got this!

♪~It's Fatalis time~♪

Just beat him today with 30 seconds left. Best fight in the game! Fair but challenging! I recommend using a plunderblade while practicing to beat him, and have plenty of mats to make max/ancient potions during the fight. Alatreon and Fatalis may be very difficult but if you stick with they force you to get good. Thank fatty and Alatreon, you were my foes but also my friends.

best balance between challenging and fair, learning his moves and playing around them feels so much more rewarding than any other monster in my opinion.

Yo someone still needs help to slay this thing on PS? I'm bored out of my eye sockets farming stupid gold crowns...

Soloed him in under 12minutes. Btw I'm a casual. So much for being impossible without good teammates. Get some skills you lazy bast ards.

lol I still get one-shot KO'd by him in the 3rd phase even if I have: -200 HP (using Health boost decorations) -48 Fire resistance (got this using Fire resist decorations + Alatreon armor) -over 1000 Defense -broke his head twice -Level 3 Divine Blessing

Fatalis has a little brother now named Dracula.

them hitboxes tho

what's the lore reason he weak to fire and not immune?

At time of writing, I have 68 successful hunts on Fatalis, most of them on duo, but I have atleast 20-22 solo hunts on him. If you ever come across this page, here are some tips. Assuming you haven't killed him yet and it's your first encounter, naturally, you won't have Fatalis set. What you can use is 2pc Golden Rathian (Chest, and Coil) that'll give you Divine Blessing 5. 3pc Lunastra Set on the remaining parts, for the Tool Specialist 5. That will make the fight easier. Use the vigorwasp palico gadget, when you max it out, it gives a revive if ever you overcommitted or miscalculated your steps. For the fight tips: You can use the cannon on the first phase, but keep in mind, in doing so, that would mean you wont be able to knock Fatalis down after the first phase using the Gattling, since it would need 3000 dmg, you wouldn't reach that easily even with HeavyArt2. As a matter of personal preference, I'd rather not use the cannons, so I can knock him down with the ballista. The reason for that is, I'm a longsword main, most of the hunts, it's either I have red gauge or yellow after knocking him down, if you use the cannon, you'll have to build up from nothing, and you won't maximize the damage. Evade Extender is unbelievably underrated in this fight, it'll save you a lot of time trying to close the distance or evading the cones, and his gigantic breath. As much as possible, hit his head on the first phase whenever you can, the best time to do so is when he does that long strafing fire breath while he is stepping backwards continuously. For his moveset, just try to fight him every time you feel like, that way you can at least memorize his pattern, his hitbox is extremely janky, so be mindful not to overcommit

Just your perfectly average CASUL passing by: After a couple of nights of fighting against the clock, the game finally let me carve this wacky lizard with just ~8 seconds of time remaining. I just don't understand what these clown developers were hoping to achieve with this BS time limit... At least, I didn't have to grind Master Ranks and Guiding Lands for augments. It may sound amusing to you, but in the last 3-2 minutes of the fight, I got so nervous - I straight up stopped feeling my face and arms. Thought I was about to have a stroke. That was rough. Even though, to be brutally honest, I'm kind of fed up with living - that would've been a fairly silly way to kick the bucket. Heheheh!

This monster is shooooo haaaaaaaarrrrddddddddddddd XD

Abnd dead, finally took him out all by myself, only 2:35 left on the clock. What a fight, thou I chessed the heck out of it.

WILL SOMEBODY JUST TELL ME WHAT SKILLS I SHOULD USE!!?!!!!? I have two comments yet 0 responses.

I only wanted to fight him because I want to avenge aiden

I'm lost, awash in an ocean of comments. I don't know if I'll ever be able to see land again.

WHAT SKILLS SHOULD I USE?!?!?!?!?!?!?

How to Beat Fatalis: A Step-by-Step Guide for Monster Hunter World Iceborne | Technobubble

special assignment fatalis

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne has finally come full circle with the release of the original apex predator atop the series’ food chain, Fatalis.

With its mix of siege weapons and good, old direct combat, Iceborne’s version of the Fatalis hunt is arguably the best rendition of the encounter to date. At the same time, it can also be quite the challenge and feel nigh impossible. Here are some tips and pointers to help you take down the legendary black dragon.

How do I unlock Fatalis?

In order to access the Fatalis fight, you will need to have finished key parts of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne’s endgame content. Here are the steps.

Finish the main campaign for Iceborne to unlock the Guiding Lands. You will also need to have reached at least Master Rank 24 and have the latest Iceborne patch installed.

Go to Seliana and talk to the Seeker when he has a purple exclamation point on top of his head. You will get the Special Assignment, “ Across the Lost Path ,” to hunt a Stygian Zinogre. Take the assignment and clear it to unlock the Tundra area of the Guiding Lands as well as a new mission.

Talk to the Pub Lass at the Gathering Hub after clearing “Across the Lost Path” and you will receive a special recon assignment, “ Point of No Return .” Take the mission to unlock Safi’Jiiva.

After finishing the recon assignment, you will gain access to a new Special Assignment called “ Blazing Black Twilight .” Take the mission and view the cutscenes. It’s OK even if you fail or quit the mission as long as you see the cutscenes.

The Special Assignment “ The Black Dragon ” will now be available.

What skills should I bring?

There’s a reason that mere mortal Batman can beat the nigh-invincible Superman: preparation. On that note here is a list of things to consider bringing with you to help make the fight more manageable. By the way, health regen is a great weapon augment to have against Fatalis. First, let’s start with some useful skills that you might want to consider incorporating into your build.

Health Boost: Seriously, just have it. To the max.

Partbreaker: Breaking Fatalis’ head — preferably twice — is crucial to significantly lowering its power and avoiding one-shot hell for the final stage of the fight. A maxed-out Level 3 Partbreaker skill goes a long way in helping you do that. It also helps in breaking other body parts in order to acquire Fatalis materials, like its wings for a Fatalis Fellwing for example.

Heavy Artillery: Siege weapons play a big role in this hunt and a maxed-out Level 2 Heavy Artillery skill will allow you to double the damage from ballista and cannons.

Divine Blessing: Fatalis hits like a big, scaly truck so any sort of damage mitigation can help you survive and stay in the fight. Maxing it out to Level 5 increases the damage reduction to 60% and allows it to proc more, for example, but even getting it to just Level 3 reduces damage by half. Equipping the Gold Rathian waist is an easy way to get Divine Blessing Level 3.

Fortify: Carting sucks. Having Fortify, however, means your attack power goes up by 10% and your defense increases by 15% every time you bite the dust. It actually makes carting a big advantage. The extra damage is especially nice given Fatalis’ chunky HP, which starts out at 66,000 HP in solo mode and scales up with more players.

Clutch Claw Boost: This skill allows light weapons to wound in one go and heavy weapons to drop slinger ammo. It’s especially a godsend for light weapons since softening the head and chest area helps with breaking parts and dealing more damage. Easily getting ammo is also great for heavy weapons as Dragon Pods can flinch Fatalis with just two slinger shots, which can help save teammates from carting or if you need to bring the monster down from the air. Pods also help you escape if Fatalis pins you. If you have yet to get decos for it, you can still acquire it by forging the Shaver Charm in the Smithy.

Fire Resistance: Given the range, scope and power of Fatalis’ flame attacks you definitely don’t want to have negative fire resistance when facing the monster. Getting this to +20 also negates fire blight, which is great as long as you don’t sacrifice other key skills in the process.

Slinger Capacity: This isn’t a must-have compared to other skills but it’s also nice if you can get it so you still have slinger ammo left over after a wall slam for flinching Fatalis in an emergency.

What items should I bring?

Monster Hunter boils down to key principles: Hit it till it dies and don’t get hit. These items help you in your pursuit of doing just that.

Max Potion: Fatalis loves to take huge chunks of your health. Make sure to bring not just max potions but also materials for crafting it and its requisite parts, like Mega Nutrients, Mandragora, Nutrients and Honey. Remember to place the crafting recipe for Max Potions and Mega Nutrients in your radial wheel for fast mixing. True confession: this is the first time I’ve ever spammed Max Potion crafting against a monster in World. There’s a reason for that.

Astera Jerky: This instantly heals the red bar on your HP gauge, which is super helpful if you get hit by a highly damaging attack.

Mega Demondrug, Demon Powder, Might Seed: Fatalis has a LOT of health so every bit of damage you can squeeze out helps over time. Don’t forget to refresh the effects of Demon Powder and Might Seed when Fatalis switches phases. Feel free to bring the defensive counterparts of these items such as Mega Armorskin, Hardshell Powder and Adamant Seed as well if you feel that you need them.

Power Charm & Powertalon: As mentioned earlier, every bit of attack helps. You can also bring an Armortalon and even the less effective Armor Charm if you have the space.

Farcaster: Helps you escape in a pinch or return to camp to switch loadouts. Note that it won’t work during Fatalis’ main, face-melting nova-type attacks.

Smoke Bomb: This is useful for getting some extra breathing room from Fatalis’ nonstop and suspiciously super accurate attacks, especially when cheesing Fatalis with siege weapons.

Immunizer: This allows you to regenerate red health faster, which is signified by a yellow recovering health bar.

What mantles should I bring?

Mantles have a lot of utility in tough fights and Fatalis is no exception. Here are some useful ones that you can choose from when deciding what mantle to bring in this particular fight.

Ghillie Mantle: This is great for the beginning of the fight so you can load both siege cannons in peace and get some high damage in the books right from the start. You can then Farcaster back to camp and switch it out for something more useful after that, unless you’re playing in a multiplayer team as the dedicated siege cannon user.

Temporal Mantle: The old, dependable get-out-of-jail-free card for those “oops” moments when you mess up and get hit by dangerous attacks. Note that it does not negate damage from attacks that don’t knock you down so don’t just stand in the middle of ticking flame attacks like a sunbathing nudist at Lake Tahoe. (You think I’m kidding…)

Rockstead Mantle: Unlike the temporal mantle, this prevents you from getting knocked down on your butt without canceling what you’re doing, which is great when loading cannons or firing siege weapons. While it reduces damage, however, you still get damage, which can add up quickly and get you carted just as fast if you’re not paying attention.

Assassin’s Hood: This often pitched as a mantle that lets you hide more quickly. One of it’s biggest benefits, however, is the movement speed increase that it gives you, which is especially great when you’re running to escape Fatalis’ super flame breath attacks.

Glider Mantle: Yup, it makes you glide in the air and even do clutch claw-to-aerial-attack shenanigans. One of its main uses, however, is getting two extra Level 4 deco slots that give your build extra skills for the three whole minutes that the mantle is up.

What Palico gadgets should I bring?

As far as Palico gadgets, you can pretty much make a case for almost all of them. Here is a brief rundown of why you would want to use a certain cat tool.

Shieldspire Stooge: This Palico tool is great for distracting Fatalis, giving you some breathing room from its attacks as well as safer openings to attack.

Vigorwasp: If you need extra survivability, the heals and one free resurrect from this Palico gadget can help keep you alive. It helps give you cockroach-levels of staying power, especially when used with Felyne Safeguard and Felyne Insurance.

Meowlotov Cocktail: Need to squeeze in that extra bit of damage? Your cat's bombs and Meowcano just might get you past those damage thresholds.

Coral Orchestra: The gadget of choice for confident hunters. This Palico tool’s wide range of buffs is especially perfect for hunters who rely on their own skills to get things done.

Plunderblade: Use this if you’re primarily interested in farming Fatalis’ parts. It lets you salvage a hunt by still being able to nab parts even if it fails.

The flow of the hunt

Just like mega monster encounters such as Behemoth, Safi’Jiiva and Alatreon, the Fatalis hunt has its own unique flow. The fight against Fatalis can be divided into three main phases, with the monster getting progressively dangerous after each one.

To more easily explain it, I will detail a step-by-step example of how a Fatalis hunt would ideally go. Feel free to put your own spin on it though based on your gear and comfort level. Anyway, here’s a quick summary:

  • Wear the Ghillie mantle before flying down.
  • Load both cannons and fire at Fatalis to topple it.
  • Jump down and attack Fatalis’ head while it is down.
  • Farcaster back to camp if you need to change loadouts.
  • Soften your two main targets — Fatalis’ head and chest.
  • After dealing 25% damage, Fatalis will perform a nova. Hide behind the northeast shroud. Welcome to Phase 2.
  • Grab the ballista ammo near the wall before leaving the now melted shroud.
  • Head toward the roaming machine gun ballista on rails. Pop a smoke bomb and start firing.
  • Fatalis will topple if you have Heavy Artillery 2 and all machine gun shots hit. Attack the head again.
  • Soften Fatalis head and chest area. Wall slam the monster.
  • After reducing Fatalis’ health to 50%, it will do another nova. Run toward the gate on top of the platform and use the switch to close it. Welcome to Phase 3.
  • Run to the right from the gate and use the ballista binder to make Fatalis descend. Attack it.
  • Once Fatalis breaks free, run back to the ballista and pick the ammo near the wall. Bind it again.
  • After inflicting enough damage, Fatalis will fly up in the air and charge up a big fire breath attack. Run underneath the monster to avoid the flames.
  • Wall slam Fatalis and continue attacking.
  • Fatalis will fly up again and do a second big fire breath attack.
  • Attack Fatalis until you get the message that the Dragonator is ready. Make sure you hit the monster with both spikes.
  • Jump down and attack the toppled Fatalis.
  • Fatalis will fly up again and do a third big fire breath attack.
  • Attack Fatalis until the roaming machine gun ballista comes online. Head to the machine gun and shoot down the monster.
  • Congratulations, hunter!

Start Phase 1 by wearing a Ghillie Mantle in camp and then hitching a ride down to Castle Schrade. Fatalis will ignore you because a flying shrub is obviously not a threat. This will allow you to easily head left, climb up the cannon platform and load both cannons full without being disturbed by Fatalis — which is especially helpful when playing solo. Once both cannons are full (five cannonballs apiece), aim one of the cannons on Fatalis while aiming the other cannon toward the middle. Fire on Fatalis with the cannon that’s aimed at the monster and immediately head to the second cannon if playing solo. Fatalis will charge the platform after getting hit, placing him in perfect position to get hit by the second cannon.

There’s a chance that it will hit you with its attacks, especially if you’re not fast enough. As an optional move, you can either pop a smoke bomb before firing the first cannon or switch to a Rocksteady Mantle and then fire the first cannon. The smoke bomb buys you time to switch cannons while going the Rocksteady route lets you tank Fatalis’ attacks and still fire off the second cannon. Hitting Fatalis on the head is especially great as it contributes to the damage for breaking his noggin. If all the cannon shots hit, you will deal about 4,500 damage solo and Fatalis will topple down to the ground . Jump down, run toward its head and wail on it like Bob Marley’s backup singers (preferably while telling it that every little thing is gonna be alright). Once it stands up, you can either continue pressing your attack or Farcaster back to camp to change loadouts and mantles.

After both cannons are fired, solo players can forget about them and just attack Fatalis. Otherwise, if you’re playing multiplayer, you can designate a player for cannon duty and continue to pelt Fatalis with cannon fire while other hunters attack him.

Priority number one at this point is to soften the head and the chest (softening one of its front arms will wound both forelegs as well as the chest), which will be your two primary targets for the rest of the hunt. You especially want to break the head at least once to reduce the damage you take in the final phase. Breaking it twice not only further reduces the power if Fatalis’ flames but guarantees that you receive an Evil Eye drop in your post-hunt rewards (Insect Glaive users, for example, can hit its head with a Kinsect shot to make their bug constantly attack it).

If the monster is not enraged at this point, you can also wall slam Fatalis with a clutch claw flinch shot. Note that wall slamming does more damage if you do it when Fatalis is standing on all fours so aim for doing that. Also, while doing it when the monster is standing will inflict less damage, it also forces it to stand on all four legs again. This gives you another chance to wall slam it if you have slinger ammo remaining and Fatalis is not enraged. If you have a teammate who is still using cannons, do not slam Fatalis toward them and make sure to pick a different wall.

Avoid standing right in front of Fatalis since it can unleash several damaging moves that cover a cone-shaped area in front of the monster. The strongest ones typically are telegraphed, which gives you time to avoid them as long as you’re not spamming buttons. The tail also has a ridiculously large — and potentially broken — hitbox so avoid that part as well.

Your best bet is to attack from the sides of its head and stomach or right under its armpits, chest and belly , while paying attention to the occasional attacks that can hit those areas. Wearing a Temporal or Rocksteady Mantle can help you more aggressively hit those areas. Attacking its groin and chest area is also good when Fatalis stands up on two legs. Just try not to over-commit when attacking from those side spots so you can dodge when needed.

Fatalis side breath, for example, can hit one side of its head and chest area so you’ll want to move to the other side when you see it coming out, which allows you to continue attacking without getting hit. Fatalis can also occasionally leave a delayed explosion on the ground below its lowered face. This can hit you when attacking from the side of its head so make sure to only hit the head a few times if you see the move coming so you can roll or move away, then return to the side of its head again to continue your attack.

After taking down 25% of its HP, Fatalis will start transitioning to Phase 2 and do its first nova. You know it’s happening because your allies will warn you about it. Run toward the tent-looking structure that’s marked on the northeast corner of the map and hide there. You can heal, restore buffs and sharpen while waiting for the nova to finish. Welcome to Phase 2 of the hunt.

Once the metal shroud melts, grab the ballista binders near the wall but save them for the last phase. Now run toward the roaming machine gun ballista on rails, and pop a smoke bomb once you get near it. Fatalis will lose sight of you and land on the ground. Ride the machine gun and start shooting Fatalis at its chest . It will just stand there puzzled until the smoke clears. If you have Heavy Artillery 2 and are playing solo, Fatalis should topple down to the ground if all the machine gun shots hit. Run toward its head and wail on it again. Once it stands up, you can go and wall slam Fatalis once again  if it’s not enraged to inflict more damage on, yep, the head. The goal is to inflict as much damage on it so you can at least get your first horn break.

Watch out for the super fire breath that Fatalis loves to do in this phase. It can cart you if you get caught in its extra-wide, conical spread but also provides an excellent opportunity to attack its lowered head from the side if you telegraph it — the same way you counterattack Rajang’s thunder Kamehameha from the side. This move is also a great opening for softening Fatalis’ head.

The black dragon will start using more attacks that can hit you from underneath the monster so you’ll want to watch out when attacking his chest and belly area, especially when the monster stands on its hindlegs. These include a delayed explosion on the ground that covers a wide area as well as sweeping fire breath that hits from underneath before moving forward. Fatalis will also occasionally do a running tackle, that you’ll want to avoid by moving toward its side.

Once you reduce its HP to 50%, it will start transitioning to Phase 3 and do an even stronger flame nova attack. Run back toward the platform with the Dragonator, climb it, enter the gate and close it with the switch . If you’re badly positioned and too far from the gate, wearing a Rocksteady Mantle could buy you some time to make it inside the gate. Once again, you can heal, restore buffs and sharpen behind cover while waiting for the nova to finish. Welcome to Phase 3.

Once the gate disappears, go outside and  run to the right toward the ballista binder . Now is a great time to use the binder ammo you saved from the previous phase to send Fatalis down from the sky. Charge Fatalis and attack the monster while it is bound. Once it’s free, run back toward the binder and pick up the ammo near the wall . You can shoot Fatalis again to cancel its fire breath attack and bind it a second time. Attack it once more and you will get a warning once you whittle down its health enough that it is gearing up to do a big fire breath from the sky. Run toward Fatalis and stand directly beneath it. Use this chance to heal, sharpen, reapply buffs, etc., if needed.

Soften its head and chest once again and continue attacking the monster while being mindful of its fire moves. If you’ve broken the head once, Fatalis’ fire attacks will also have just a hint of purple from its mouth but have a regular orange color instead of the deadlier blue flame for its fire.

If Fatalis is not enraged, make sure to wall slam it for extra damage . Keep attacking the head and you should hopefully get your second head break. This will reduce his fire breath damage to Phase 1 levels. Eventually, Fatalis will fly up and you will get your second warning that Fatalis is using another big fire breath attack. Run underneath it and heal up, sharpen, buff up, etc. once again if needed.

After attacking Fatalis a few more times, you will get a message that the Dragonator is ready . Head to the switch while being cautious of the monsters’ long-range attacks. You can also Farcaster back to camp to grab a sleep weapon if you want to do more damage. Just sleep Fatalis in front of the Dragonator before triggering it. Also make sure that both spikes hit. Fatalis will topple down to the ground, allowing you to get several free hits in.

Fatalis will fly up again for its third big fire breath. Run toward the monster and stand underneath it again. At this point, it should only have about 5% or so of its health left and you could see the skull icon on the mini-map. Attack Fatalis until you get a message that the machine gun ballista is ready again. Approach it and pop a smoke bomb if you still have one and shoot Fatalis. This should kill the monster if everything hits. Otherwise, just keep attacking Fatalis until it goes down. Congratulations, you have slayed the legendary black dragon.

Now go farm its sexy gear!
