Sample Answer
Presently, newspapers, books, journals, magazines, etc. are still actively used by a section of the global population. However, with the arrival of news sites and the availability of books, magazines and other forms of media online, totally free of cost, many believe that such forms of media are on their way to becoming outdated. I agree with this statement, and will explain it further with relevant examples in the essay.
It is a well-known fact that in this day and age if an individual wants to read a book or just go over the news of the day, the first step that they take is to search the internet. Devices such as smartphones and tablets have improved the time efficiency of searching for information online to such an extent that a person can access their preferred form of media in the comfort of their homes in a matter of minutes. Consequently, people have started to abandon their preference for print media due to the presence of much more convenient alternatives.
Additionally, the various forms of print media enjoyed by people can often be availed free of charge on several websites. For instance, most news organizations publish their daily news on their official website, which can be accessed by anyone. Also, some numerous sites and databases provide popular books, journals and magazines in a digital form to the public for a nominal subscription fee or sometimes even for free, leading to a majority of readers of such forms of media shifting away from buying hard copies.
Nevertheless, there is still a sizable chunk of the population that enjoys the conventional forms of print media. That being said, with the cost-effective nature of making such information and content available online, organizations will soon completely shift to internet-based services.
In conclusion, I would like to say that people always prefer the more comfortable alternative that is available. Therefore, it can be safely said that in the coming years, there will be a complete shift from traditional print media to online media services and products.
Sample Question 2
Some people say that international sporting events contribute greatly to peace and stability in the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Paraphrase the topic sentence using synonyms.
Mention the view on the topic.
Body Paragraphs
International sports tournaments are events where teams and the general public of various countries come together and collectively participate in the event.
Sports events, especially cricket and football help distract the minds of the citizens from the ongoing difficulties in their country and enjoy these events.
Summarize the essay and state the final view.
Sports has always been a magnificent platform for the finest talents of a country to showcase their skills and represent their nation. At the same time, sports is also one of the few occasions where every citizen of the country unites in support of their favourite teams. It is considered by many that sports are a great approach to maintain stability among countries. This essay will elaborate on the given topic and justify why sports can successfully bring and preserve global peace.
One of the greatest characteristics of any popular sporting event is that supporters of every team involved in the tournament almost always attend the matches that are organized in their cities. Some veteran fans even travel to different parts of the country to witness a match between their favourite teams. These events also unite the populace of a nation as every patriotic individual prays for the success of their national team. For instance, the entire nation wishes for the victory of their national team in the Olympic Games as winning an Olympic Medal is one of the most prestigious honours that can be bestowed upon a country.
It is a well-known fact that the people of a country collectively face several challenges on a day-to-day basis. These issues can be caused by numerous factors and are the typical difficulties that ordinary citizens have to overcome. Sports help people enjoy a few moments of excitement and take a break from the monotony of everyday life.
That being said, sometimes the passion of overenthusiastic sports fans ends up leading to harmful and conflicting situations among communities. Nevertheless, the overall impact of sports on our lives is undoubtedly positive.
Finally, sports are one of the aspects of human life that bind a whole community together. This is enough evidence to understand that sports help maintain peace and stability in a nation.

Sample Question 3
Our personalities are predetermined as a result of our genes before we are born and there is nothing that can be done to change our character traits. To what extent do you agree?
Paraphrase the topic and mention the view.
Genetics are only a part of the entire list of factors that affect a person’s personality.
One of the most important influences on an individual’s personality is their childhood and upbringing.
Summarize the essay and mention the final view in brief.
Even between small periods of time, there are subtle variabilities in our disposition. Such alterations are quite natural and are a part of a human being’s existence. However, it is often assumed that our personality is entirely dependent on genetics. The following paragraphs will explore the different aspects of personality and justify why genetics are not the only factor influencing our personality.
An individual has countless experiences in their life from childhood to adulthood and finally until death. Every one of these experiences has an impact on a person’s mind, no matter how giant or small. The kind of people present in a person’s immediate surroundings also has a huge influence on their nature and characteristics. Thus, it can be safely surmised that a person’s genes are not the only contributing factor when it comes to personality.
One of the most significant influences on our personality is our childhood experiences and the teachings of our parents. Children are always known to follow in the footsteps of their parents. Thus, if the parents of a child are successful in teaching their children the right values and morals, they are bound to grow into responsible and decent individuals.
It is true that the personality traits of an individual are determined by the features of their parents. Nevertheless, these traits can be altered over the course of many years and different experiences.
In conclusion, genetics affect our personalities in a trivial manner as compared to all the other aspects of our temperament. That being said, our life experiences and learnings are the consequential factors in developing our character.

Sentence-level essay writing
In my next few blog lessons, I want to continue with the theme of the last lesson that I published on my old blog. Here’s a copy of that last lesson:
Three levels of IELTS essay writing
Let’s break essay writing into the following 3 levels:
- The full essay
- Paragraph level
- Sentence level
When faced with a writing task 2 question, some IELTS students / candidates are stuck at level 1. They have no idea how to organise their writing at paragraph and sentence level. They simply start writing and hope for the best.
Many IELTS students are at level 2. They know that they need an introduction, main body paragraphs, and a conclusion. They may also know about things like thesis statements and topic sentences. However, students at this level still struggle to write detailed and coherent main body paragraphs. There is still an element of “hoping for the best” when it comes to the main body sentences.
I teach students to break essays down to sentence level. This means that we decide exactly how many sentences to write (13 according to my method), and we know exactly what each sentence should do. If you learn to write like this, there’s no need to “hope for the best”; you simply treat each sentence as a mini-task and work your way through 13 of these until the essay is finished.
On this new site, I want to help you with l evel 3 : the sentence-level approach to writing. So how do we write in this way?
Here’s a quick guide:
- First, we decide on a fixed number of paragraphs in any essay that we write. We will always write 4 paragraphs , never more and never less.
- We make a similar decision about sentences, always 13 : two for the introduction, five for each main paragraph, one for the conclusion.
- Next, we look at the specific job of each of our 13 sentences .
Think about essay writing like this: each sentence has a job .
And here’s the good news: there is only a limited number of ‘jobs’ that sentences in an IELTS essay can do. A sentence can introduce a topic, give an opinion, explain something…
Study task: What other ‘jobs’ can sentences in an IELTS essay do?
If you need help, look at the essay plans in my writing task 2 model answer lessons here . My essay plans are really useful because they show you exactly what each sentence will do.

Thank you so much Simon, I hope that you add more lesson on this new site! I am stuck at level 1.
I am stuck at level 1 until i learn from you. Now i improve better than before. i long for your new lessons. Thanks
Hi Nhung. I’ll add more lessons fairly quickly, so the site will soon fill up. For now, try the homework task in the lesson above: What other jobs can sentences in an IELTS essay do?
Hi Simon, I am Sheng. I wish that there are more tasks to do,and hope to see more contents in here!! Great to be back! It is just the website I hoped for!
I’m glad you like the site Sheng! Try the homework (study task) at the end of the lesson above.
I have bit problem in level 3
Ok, then try the homework (study task) at the end of the lesson above. Let’s start solving your problem!
There is a root cause why people are not in favour of holding international sporting events. Firstly, these global events require a considerable amount of money. Governments develop infrastructures, such as stadiums, roads, flyovers, hotels, restaurants and hospitals for the international visitors in order to gain an international prestige. Many a time, nations fall into a serious debts. For example, India spent a huge amount of money from its national budget to expand The Delhi Metro to accommodate more visitors during the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and had to cover up the debt beacuse of this event
Analyse your own paragraph in this way: what ‘job’ is each sentence doing?
Hi Simon, a sentence can also give an example, extend ideas and conclude the whole essay (according to what you taught us from the old blog). For each paragraph, sentences’ job can be introducing ideas and giving examples for supporting our opinion.
Good work. So:
– introduce an idea – extend an idea – give an opinion – support an opinion – give an example – conclude
Let’s see if anyone can add to this. Thanks!
Hello Simon,
If I remember right the one-idea paragraph also had “extend an example” sentence, though it might be covered by “extend an idea”.
I also wonder if we can ask you some questions here? I have a question about the language of this post but I’m not sure it’d be appropriate.
Yes, you can extend an example. We’ll look at this when we come to one-idea paragraphs.
Feel free to ask a question! Just submit a new comment rather than replying to this one.
Dear Simon, I am a follower of your EILTS approach. Comparing with your previous website, it is easlier to browse around and find the related contents. Apart from that, it’s amazing I can press ‘plus’ to see answers in reading section, which can avoid the disruption before I finish the exercise. The writing Task 1( gen) is also very helpful because there is a lack of general writing advice in the IELTS training market. I look forward to your update.
Thanks Chao, I’m glad you like it!
Hi, Simon! It’s great to see you again. I’ve just signed up to your new site (this one) today although I received the link to register days ago. I’ve not checked my mails recently and I felt lucky because I signed up to your new site in time. I have to say that your Ielts lessons help me a lot with my English, so I’m looking forward to the forthcoming lessons. :D. (I just want to say something cuz I signed up too late to be able to comment below the first blog. Hope you don’t mind!. ^^) Here is my homework: Beside your examples, there are some other jobs IELTS sentences can do: – Give an example – Give a result (either on a short, medium or long term) – Give a future prediction – Conclude P.S: Can you set the words in the comment section to be a little bit bolder, please? It’s a bit difficult for me to read what I just typed in because of its light colour. Thank youu. From D.E
Good to see you here, and thanks for the suggestion about the comment colour.
Yes, results, predictions and conclusions are also possible elements of a main body paragraph.
I have never thought about writing essays on a sentence level before, which is good news for writing my future IELTS essay!! In my opinions, sentences also have jobs, such as providing reasons and explaining consequences.
Yes, I’m sure this way of thinking is going to help you!
This is the first time I’ve heard of 3 level of IELTS writing essay. I think I’m at level 3. I’ll try to use your 13 sentences method. Here is my answer for the study task: – Provide explanation – Provide more details – Give contrast ideas – Give example – Give suggestion
Good work Anh. Those are common sentence ‘jobs’.
Dear Simon, Here is my answer in relation to the task: – give an example – conclusion a topic – cause and effect relationship – has a scientific data – give a suggestion
Apart from the task, Mr. Simon, I have a suggestion for you to develop the website. You can add a night-mode option on your site.
Additionally, a sentence can give a comparison.
These are good suggestions, but I don’t think you should try to give scientific data in a task 2 essay.
Topic sentence Main sentence (idea) Explanation (why or how) Supporting idea (example and effect) Contrast opinion Rephrase the topic sentence
Good, although I don’t usually recommend the last one (rephrase the topic sentence). Avoid saying the same thing twice within a main paragraph; instead, try to develop / extend your ideas.
Dear Simon, I plan to take an IELTS GT exam. I have been thinking that we will be asked about general topic in writing section 2. What I mean is that I presumably will be asked to write as to social, environmental, life-related issues. I wonder, what is the possibility of a question of scientific subject that I might encounter with. Might I be asked to write in relation to space exploration, genetic engineering, nuclear power or guns, artificial intelligence etc.? Since, I am going to act on that. Thanks you in advance for the answer. Yours faithfully.
Hi Burak. Whatever the question is, you won’t need any particular knowledge about the field – you just need to express simple opinions. So, don’t worry too much about covering all of the possible topics.
In GT writing task 2, the ‘scientific’ or academic topics that you mentioned are much less likely.

Trong đó, “Do you agree or disagree? - Bạn đồng ý hay không đồng ý?” hoặc “ To what extent do you agree or disagree? - Bạn đồng ý hoặc không đồng ý ở mức độ nào” có ý nghĩa gần giống nhau. Ngoài ra, bạn cũng có thể bắt gặp câu hỏi “What is your opinion?”

Đề bài mẫu để phân tích: “More and more people today are using computers and electronic devices to access information. Therefore there is no need to print books, magazines and newspapers. To what extent do you agree or disagree ?”
2.1. Introduction

Opinion columnists | opinion: márquez’s support of the trump insurrection ruling should disqualify her from office, vote not to retain colorado supreme court justice márquez.
Because of her vote earlier this year in the 4-3 Anderson v. Griswold, where the court ordered President Donald Trump to be removed from the Colorado primary ballot, Chief Justice Márquez does not deserve to remain on the bench. She egregiously attempted to disenfranchise over 550,000 Colorado Trump primary voters,
On January 6, 2021, President Donald Trump gave a speech at his “Save America March” concerning the pending certification of the presidential election results naming Joe Biden as president. Every word of Trump’s speech enjoyed First Amendment protection. Indeed, he urged them to march “peacefully” to the Capitol to protest the certification by Congress. He used the phrase “fight like hell,” but many politicians have used the term “fight” in speeches. Even the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg urged supporters to fight for what they believe in — in a way that makes people want to politically fight on their side. Ginsburg, like Trump, was not advocating in favor of violence.
After Trump’s speech, at the rally authorized by the National Park Service, some protesters rioted at the Capitol. Not one rioter has been charged with a violation of the insurrection statute, 18 U.S.C. § 2383. Even Jack Smith, the highly partisan and controversial attorney assigned by Attorney General Merrick Garland to prosecute Trump, has not levied that charge.
Still, a group of anti-Trump voters filed a lawsuit in Colorado to remove Trump from the ballot after he had announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican nomination for the presidency. According to this group, Trump was an insurrectionist who was barred from running pursuant to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, the so-called Insurrection Clause.
Denver District Judge Sarah Wallace held a trial on the voters’ insurrection claim. Wallace determined President Trump had engaged in an insurrection but he had not been an officer of the United States, meaning that he had not been subject to the Insurrection Clause. The voters appealed to the Colorado Supreme Court, and the justices reversed Judge Wallace by a 4-3 vote, and ruled that Trump must be disqualified from the primary election ballot in Colorado. The four justices were: Justices Richard Gabriel; Melissa Hart; William Hood; and Monica Márquez.
The day before the primary election, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously reversed the Colorado Supreme Court. The 9-0 ruling held that states do not have the authority to remove federal candidates from the ballot based on the Insurrection Clause.
The Colorado Supreme Court majority purported to defend democracy by throwing Trump off of the ballot. Those four justices did not defend democracy; they defiled it. They used a Civil War era provision intended to bar members of the Confederacy from serving in government to remove a candidate from the ballot who had engaged in protected speech. They used the kangaroo court report of the January 6 Select Committee as a substantial basis for their decision. These justices arrogantly took it upon themselves to decide that they and not Colorado voters would choose the winner of Colorado’s electoral votes.
Justices Maria Berkenkotter and Brian Boatright are also up for retention next month, and they should keep their seats. They are also appointees of Democrat governors, but these two justices, unlike Márquez, respected the right of Colorado voters to vote for the candidate of their choice. Berkenkotter and Boatright each wrote powerful dissents against the majority’s opinion.
If Marquez loses her retention effort, Democrat Governor Jared Polis certainly will appoint another judge to replace her. Regardless of their views of Trump, Colorado voters need to send a message to Márquez that her attempt to disenfranchise over 550,000 of them was repugnant to the fundamental values of the Republic.
Mike Davis, a Colorado resident, is the Founder and President of the Article III Project, a group that fights against judicial overreach and ensures political viewpoints don’t infringe upon legal accountability, and helped oversee the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court as Chief Counsel for Nominations on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Nate Silver: Here’s What My Gut Says About the Election, but Don’t Trust Anyone’s Gut, Even Mine
By Nate Silver
Mr. Silver is the author of “On the Edge: The Art of Risking Everything.”
In an election where the seven battleground states are all polling within a percentage point or two, 50-50 is the only responsible forecast. Since the debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, that is more or less exactly where my model has had it.
Yet when I deliver this unsatisfying news, I inevitably get a question: “C’mon, Nate, what’s your gut say?”
So OK, I’ll tell you. My gut says Donald Trump. And my guess is that it is true for many anxious Democrats.
But I don’t think you should put any value whatsoever on anyone’s gut — including mine. Instead, you should resign yourself to the fact that a 50-50 forecast really does mean 50-50. And you should be open to the possibility that those forecasts are wrong, and that could be the case equally in the direction of Mr. Trump or Ms. Harris.
It’s not that I’m inherently against intuition. In poker, for example, it plays a large role. Most of the expert players I have spoken with over the years will say it gives you a little something extra. You’re never certain, but your intuition might tilt the odds to 60-40 in your favor by picking up patterns of when a competitor is bluffing.
But poker players base that little something on thousands of hands of experience. There are presidential elections only every four years. When asked who will win, most people say Mr. Trump because of recency bias — he won in 2016, when he wasn’t expected to, and then almost won in 2020 despite being well behind in the polls. But we might not remember 2012, when Barack Obama not only won but beat his polls. It’s extremely hard to predict the direction of polling errors.
Why Trump could beat his polls
The people whose gut tells them Mr. Trump will win frequently invoke the notion of shy Trump voters. The theory, adopted from the term “shy Tories” for the tendency of British polls to underestimate Conservatives, is that people do not want to admit to voting for conservative parties because of the social stigma attached to them.
But there’s not much evidence for the shy-voter theory — nor has there been any persistent tendency in elections worldwide for right-wing parties to outperform their polls. (Case in point: Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party underachieved its polls in this summer’s French legislative elections.) There’s even a certain snobbery to the theory. Many people are proud to admit their support for Mr. Trump, and if anything, there’s less stigma to voting for him than ever.
Instead, the likely problem is what pollsters call nonresponse bias. It’s not that Trump voters are lying to pollsters; it’s that in 2016 and 2020, pollsters weren’t reaching enough of them.
Nonresponse bias can be a hard problem to solve. Response rates to even the best telephone polls are in the single digits — in some sense, the people who choose to respond to polls are unusual. Trump supporters often have lower civic engagement and social trust, so they can be less inclined to complete a survey from a news organization. Pollsters are attempting to correct for this problem with increasingly aggressive data-massaging techniques, like weighting by educational attainment (college-educated voters are more likely to respond to surveys) or even by how people say they voted in the past. There’s no guarantee any of this will work.
If Mr. Trump does beat his polling, there will have been at least one clear sign of it: Democrats no longer have a consistent edge in party identification — about as many people now identify as Republicans.
There’s also the fact that Ms. Harris is running to become the first female president and the second Black one. The so-called Bradley effect — named after the former Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley, who underperformed his polls in the 1982 California governor’s race, for the supposed tendency of voters to say they’re undecided rather than admit they won’t vote for a Black candidate — wasn’t a problem for Barack Obama in 2008 or 2012. Still, the only other time a woman was her party’s nominee, undecided voters tilted heavily against her. So perhaps Ms. Harris should have some concerns about a Hillary Clinton effect.
Why Harris could beat her polls
A surprise in polling that underestimates Ms. Harris isn’t necessarily less likely than one for Mr. Trump. On average, polls miss by three or four points. If Ms. Harris does that, she will win by the largest margin in both the popular vote and the Electoral College since Mr. Obama in 2008.
How might that happen? It could be because of something like what happened in Britain in 2017, related to the shy Tories theory. Expected to be a Tory sweep, the election instead resulted in Conservatives losing their majority. There was a lot of disagreement among pollsters, and some did nail the outcome. But others made the mistake of not trusting their data, making ad hoc adjustments after years of being worried about shy Tories.
Polls are increasingly like mini-models, with pollsters facing many decision points about how to translate nonrepresentative raw data into an accurate representation of the electorate. If pollsters are terrified of missing low on Mr. Trump again, they may consciously or unconsciously make assumptions that favor him.
For instance, the new techniques that pollsters are applying could be overkill. One problem with using one of those — weighting on recalled vote , or trying to account for how voters report their pick in the last election — is that people often misremember or misstate whom they voted for and are more likely to say they voted for the winner (in 2020, Mr. Biden).
That could plausibly bias the polls against Ms. Harris because people who say they voted for Mr. Biden but actually voted for Mr. Trump will get flagged as new Trump voters when they aren’t. There’s also a credible case that 2020 polling errors were partly because of Covid restrictions: Democrats were more likely to stay at home and therefore had more time on their hands to answer phone calls. If pollsters are correcting for what was a once-in-a-century occurrence, they may be overdoing it this time.
Last, there is Democrats’ persistently strong performance over the past two years — since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade — in special elections, ballot referendums and the 2022 midterms. Democrats shouldn’t hang their hopes on this one: High-quality surveys like the New York Times/Siena College polls can replicate these results by showing Democrats polling strongly among the most motivated voters who show up in these low-turnout elections — but Mr. Trump making up for it by winning most of the marginal voters. So Democrats may be rooting for lower turnout. If those marginal voters don’t show up, Ms. Harris could overperform; if they do, Mr. Trump could.
Or maybe pollsters are herding toward a false consensus
Here’s another counterintuitive finding: It’s surprisingly likely that the election won’t be a photo finish.
With polling averages so close, even a small systematic polling error like the one the industry experienced in 2016 or 2020 could produce a comfortable Electoral College victory for Ms. Harris or Mr. Trump. According to my model, there’s about a 60 percent chance that one candidate will sweep at least six of seven battleground states.
Polling firms are pilloried on social media whenever they publish a result deemed an outlier — so most of them don’t, instead herding toward a consensus and matching what polling averages (and people’s instincts) show. The Times/Siena polls are one of the few regular exceptions, and they depict a much different electorate than others, with Mr. Trump making significant gains with Black and Hispanic voters but lagging in the blue-wall states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
Don’t be surprised if a relatively decisive win for one of the candidates is in the cards — or if there are bigger shifts from 2020 than most people’s guts might tell them.
