The format of a research proposal varies between fields, but most proposals will contain at least these elements:

Academics often have to write research proposals to get funding for their projects. As a student, you might have to write a research proposal as part of a grad school application , or prior to starting your thesis or dissertation .

What Goes in a Research Proposal?    

Research proposals should aim to answer the three basic questions—what, why, and how.  

The What question should be answered by describing the specific subject being researched. It should typically include the objectives, the cohort details, and the location or setting.  

The Why question should be answered by describing the existing scenario of the subject, listing unanswered questions, identifying gaps in the existing research, and describing how your study can address these gaps, along with the implications and significance.  

The How question should be answered by describing the proposed research methodology, data analysis tools expected to be used, and other details to describe your proposed methodology.

Here is a research proposal sample template (with examples) from the University of Rochester Medical Center. 4 The sections in all research proposals are essentially the same although different terminology and other specific sections may be used depending on the subject.  

Structure of a Research Proposal  

If you want to know how to make a research proposal impactful, include the following components:¹  

1. Introduction  

This section provides a background of the study, including the research topic, what is already known about it and the gaps, and the significance of the proposed research.  

2. Literature review  

This section contains descriptions of all the previous relevant studies pertaining to the research topic. Every study cited should be described in a few sentences, starting with the general studies to the more specific ones. This section builds on the understanding gained by readers in the Introduction section and supports it by citing relevant prior literature, indicating to readers that you have thoroughly researched your subject.  

3. Objectives  

Once the background and gaps in the research topic have been established, authors must now state the aims of the research clearly. Hypotheses should be mentioned here. This section further helps readers understand what your study’s specific goals are.  

4. Research design and methodology  

Here, authors should clearly describe the methods they intend to use to achieve their proposed objectives. Important components of this section include the population and sample size, data collection and analysis methods and duration, statistical analysis software, measures to avoid bias (randomization, blinding), etc.  

5. Ethical considerations  

This refers to the protection of participants’ rights, such as the right to privacy, right to confidentiality, etc. Researchers need to obtain informed consent and institutional review approval by the required authorities and mention this clearly for transparency.  

6. Budget/funding  

Researchers should prepare their budget and include all expected expenditures. An additional allowance for contingencies such as delays should also be factored in.  

7. Appendices  

This section typically includes information that supports the research proposal and may include informed consent forms, questionnaires, participant information, measurement tools, etc.

Writing a research proposal begins much before the actual task of writing. Planning the research proposal structure and content is an important stage, which if done efficiently, can help you seamlessly transition into the writing stage. 3,5

• Manage your time efficiently. Plan to have the draft version ready at least two weeks before your deadline and the final version at least two to three days before the deadline.
• What is the primary objective of your research?  
• Will your research address any existing gap?  
• What is the impact of your proposed research?  
• Do people outside your field find your research applicable in other areas?  
• If your research is unsuccessful, would there still be other useful research outcomes?  

  The Writing Stage  

• Create an outline with main section headings that are typically used.  
• Focus only on writing and getting your points across without worrying about the format of the research proposal , grammar, punctuation, etc. These can be fixed during the subsequent passes. Add details to each section heading you created in the beginning.   
• Ensure your sentences are concise and use plain language. A research proposal usually contains about 2,000 to 4,000 words or four to seven pages.  
• Don’t use too many technical terms and abbreviations assuming that the readers would know them. Define the abbreviations and technical terms.  
• Ensure that the entire content is readable. Avoid using long paragraphs because they affect the continuity in reading. Break them into shorter paragraphs and introduce some white space for readability.  
• Focus on only the major research issues and cite sources accordingly. Don’t include generic information or their sources in the literature review.  
• Proofread your final document to ensure there are no grammatical errors so readers can enjoy a seamless, uninterrupted read.  
• Use academic, scholarly language because it brings formality into a document.  
• Ensure that your title is created using the keywords in the document and is neither too long and specific nor too short and general.

The women in traditional African societies suffered discrimination and prejudice in their quest to participate in leadership. This paper examined the attitude of modern Africans towards allowing female equal access as their male counterparts to leadership positions in global organisations. The study was conducted among 100 part time students of a tertiary institution who worked under male and female leaders. The participants were purposeivey selected into a quasi-experimental group. They were asked to express a preference between a male leader and a female leader assuming they were the ones to decide who to hire to fill positions of CEOs in two simulated global organisations. They were also requested to rate their female or male leaders using Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). The result of the study revealed that women were still unfavourably perceived as fit for leadership positions. The reasons for the negative perception towards women participation in leadership was discussed, the qualities that make African women good leaders were analysed, and efforts that can be made to increase women's leadership participation in Africa were also suggested. INTRODUCTION Organisations do evolve from domestic companies to become multinational institutions or global organisations. Invariably, the leadership of such organisationsis expected to be part of the evolution process, besides, globalization as a phenomenon has compelled many companies to adopt a global mindset in their business operations. It has therefore become an issue of concern to researchers how today business organisations plays in the increasingly globalised world. Introduction of new or improved technologies in information communication and the continual ease in modes of transportation has further enhanced the drive for businesses to think and act globally. Thus, many African organisations whose operations were limited only to the boundaries of their home countries only have started spreading their tentacles to several other countries outside their borders physically, or virtually. Interestingly, in this new reality Lajtha and Carminati-Rabasse (2008) opined that women should be accorded more consideration than men for global leadership roles because they appear better prepared because of their perceived positive tendency towards inclusivity, diversity, social responsibility, and global skills than men. Moreover, other advocates of women leadership have pointed to studies that suggest that women's leadership styles were more democratic, participative and less autocratic or directive than men's leadership styles (Eagly& Johnson, 1990). In spite of this vantage position ascribed to women in the extant literature, fewer women were still in executive positions and/or on board of directors compared to their male counterparts (Singh & Vinnicombe, 2004). According to a Catalyst (2011) report, the following represent the number of women in executive positions in the United States: 51.5% holds management and professional positions, only 14.4% of executive officer positions and 15.7% of board seats.Adler (2002) had earlier painted a worst scenario when he reported that only 3% of senior management positions in the United States and 2% in Europe were held by women. Similarly, Singh and Terjesen (2008) revealed that the percentages of women holding seats on company boards ranged from only 0.2% in Japan to 22% in Slovenia. The U.S. Department of Labor (2010) and the Bureau of Labour Statistics corroborated further by stating that, in spite of the fact that 30% of both men and women have at least a bachelor's degree; women were underrepresented in senior leadership roles and only make 81% of their male counterparts' wages.While some of the records presented here reflect certain improvements from pastdecades, Eagly and Carli (2007) showed that women continue to face a series of obstacles within a labyrinth as they attempt toascend the line of command to become leaders. As poor as women participation in leadership is in North America and Europe in spite of their liberal dispositions to the female gender, the situation is worse in Africa with a less liberal disposition. For example, the recent data made available by World Bank Enterprise Survey (2011) shows that in both the public and private sectors in Africa, only 1 in 26 salaried African women is employed in a senior management position, compared with 1 in every 6 men.In South Africa that has the reputation as one of the most developed African countries as far as equality of gender is concerned and gender sensitive constitution, (see table 1), it was reported that there were only 10 companies with more than 25% women in senior management in 2004,this increased significantly to 58 companies in 2008 and then fell back to only 37 companies in 2011. (Business Women's Association, 2011). However, There is a substantial volume of literature on the merits of creating equal access to leadership roles for both men and women, what appears to be lacking in the existing studies is the research on struggles of corporate women in the developing economies in their effort to attain leadership positions domestically and globally. The present study is aimed at contributing to filling this gap.

This paper seeks to analyze the various contributions of these African women in positions of global authority and the parts they play in influencing fellow women to aspire and take up leadership positions. The paper adopts library instrument of research from documented materials such as books, periodicals, journals and reports. Findings show that, across the world, women make up about half the population yet they never come close to holding fifty percent of the positions of power in any government. The paper concludes that, without a doubt, women in Africa have risen to various positions of power and leadership both within the private and public sectors of governance and indeed are proving their mettle in their various spheres. Although successful African women leaders have very intimidating résumés, very little records of mentoring and personal development of fellow women exist. The paper recommends that, specific and critical measures should be taken to enable women's full participation in decision making, policy formulation as well as access to all organizations of the society. Successful women should mentor and develop fellow women, which is necessary in order to support and encourage the leadership traits in younger women.

The purpose of this study was to assess how cultural perceptions influence women’s active participation in leadership in Kitutu Masaba Sub County. Globally the participation of women in leadership is very low. In East Africa, Kenya is the worst performing still struggling to achieve the 30% threshold mandated in the constitution, mainly because of the political environment and cultural beliefs that still place women at “home”. One case worthy to note, is the Abagusii people who since independenc have never elected any woman as a Member of Parliament,except those elected as Women County Representatives in the general election held in 2013 and 2017. The study made use of the Feminist theory which recognizes the pervasive influence of gender divisions on social life and Empowerment Theory which explain how individuals’ and communities increase power to control various aspects of their lives and participate in the community with dignity. Related literature on women participation was reviewed. The targeted population was men and women aged 18 years and above, the sample size was 384, arrived at through the use Morgan 7 Table. Purposive Sampling was used to sample leaders in the community (elected, appointed, men and women at all levels ad opinion makers) in the six wards of Kitutu Masaba Sub County. Respondents were selected from each ward on stratified random sampling and targeted at least 64 respondents from each ward of Kitutu Masaba sub County. Data collection was done through question guidelines and interviews. The study used descriptive survey design. Data were analyzed using the computer programme, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Result findings were presented using frequency tables, graphs, charts and narrations. From the findings of the study, it is concluded that women are marginally under-represented in leadership in the community, and that cultural factors are the strongest barriers that hinder women from participating in leadership positions. The findings of this study are significant in that they may assist the community and relevant government departments in developing more appropriate strategies, policies and regulations that will encourage more women to take part in leadership positions in Kitutu Masaba Sub County. The results of the study formed a basis for making recommendations on how more women could be empowered to perform leadership roles.

Rampant social crises entangled in deadly African demonstrations, protests and running battles are a callous condition provoking profound reflection on the calibre of leadership occupying different levels in public institutions. We navigate the feasibility of unlocking the women leadership potential seemingly ubiquitous under cultural stereotypes that confront female leadership. The overwhelming studies conducted elsewhere stimulate deeper enquiry into the underpinning women leadership obstacles within sub Saharan Africa. The primeval ideological prejudices paint a malaise portrait that perceives men as breadwinners. Austerity measures to alter this philosophy have been significantly hampered, despite rigorous determination in the last three decades. Mechanisms continue to be sought to support these endeavours, including all-inclusive leadership training interventions that address women underrepresentation in the upper echelons. A paucity of gender inclusive leadership continues to rein in most public enterprises prompting the need for further investigation. Incompatible women roles in work-home spheres place additional demands on women, thus weakening their self-esteem. A rapture of gender activists tends to provoke resentment from male partisans in the gender campaigns. Conversely, women themselves tend to widen the gap by restraining support for other women while feeling a sense of security in female homogeneous settings. Socialisation is incredibly perceived contributory to women leadership obstacles; women internalise certain socio-cultural roles engrained in their dispositions. Additionally, child marriage particularly in the girl child is believed to perpetuate leadership barriers from a cultural perspective ultimately undermining chances of increased women leadership. Finally, the gap in women leadership policy implementation continues to swell despite numerous conventions and policy stipulations that yield little results, compelling an urgent need for further research.

Disparaging feelings toward women in the workplace, society, civil society and leadership consisted of attitudes such as, “[women] lacked career orientation, leadership potential and were undependable and emotionally unstable – all of which made women unsuitable candidates for management and some strategic and sensitive leadership position.” (Bass, Krusell, & Alexander, 1971).Polls about women in leadership said that despite executives more favorable view of women, the majority still think only a truly exceptional woman can succeed in some leadership role in the world (Sutton & Moore, 1985). The unfounded attitudes we hold are the larger concern for our understanding of women in leadership. The presence of feminine or masculine characteristics in leadership styles is related to the construct of gender (Larson and Freeman, 1997). Gender, race, class, and other elements of social difference are acknowledged to play an important role in the development of leadership styles.Recognizing women’s styles of leadership represents an important approach to equity as long as they are not stereotyped as “the” ways women lead but as “other” ways of leading.The feminine leadership styles are not better or worse than the traditional male-oriented ones, they are just different.

A postgraduate research proposal allows you to gain newer perspective and experience within your field by completing a major research project under the supervision of an academic. The research proposal is crucial to your application because it forms a basis for making a judgement about your sustainability for postgraduate research particularly:

• knowledge of literature: it shows the ability to understand the elements which is the forefront of the field of study or area of professional practice.
• research methods and methodological appreciation: understanding of the application of various techniques of research and advanced academic enquiry
• writing quality
• qualifications and experience: appropriate qualifications or experiences which suggest high expectation to succeed with this study

When writing your proposal, well-presented and clearly written proposals are more likely to stick in the reviewer’s mind. So let us begin with the basic components that makes up a postgraduate research proposal:

Provide a background information in the form of a literature review which sets the context for your research to help the reader understand the questions and objectives. Identify any gap in the knowledge or questions which have to be answered, specify your aims and objectives, including a brief description of the methodology and how will your research be beneficial and to whom. The introduction is your opportunity to demonstrate that your research has not been done before and that the proposed project will add something new to the existing body of literature.

In this section you should be able to identify the following:

• statement of the problem which describes the context for the study and it also identifies the general analysis approach. It is important in a proposal that the problem stand out—that the reader can easily recognize it.
• purpose of the study in which you are to define and delimit the specific area of the research and its central concepts.

It is important to present the proposed research methodology such as techniques, sample size, target populations, species choice, equipment and data analysis, and explain why it is the most appropriate methodology to effectively answer the research question. Justify the methodology by explaining what alternatives have been considered and why these have been disregarded. Also point out how your project fits with the research environment of your prospective institution and why this institution is the best place to conduct your research, in particular if this will provide you with access to unique expertise, pieces of equipment or data. Some examples of research methods are: sampling, instrumentation, data analysis and data collection .

Define how this research will refine, revise, or extend existing knowledge in the area under investigation. Also you can also briefly include a small section to present how your research interests, previous achievements, relevant professional experience and qualifications will support the completion of your research project.

Summarize all that there is to your postgraduate research proposal and come up with a conclusion that can help a reviewer identify the important information. Make sure these are concise, clear and informative.

The importance of a research proposal is to give an initial overview of the research project you are about to conduct. It helps identify what kind of research methods that are applicable in your research and the reason behind your research. It is also quite significant in order to get funding.

This is a degree that you study after you graduate from a four year bachelor’s degree or for some on the basis of relevant work experience.

Depending on your field, a postgraduate course can take about a year in full time or two in part time and does not typically exceed five years.
