FAQs about Freelance Proofreading Jobs

Whew, that was a lot of information to get at one time! You probably have a lot of questions now like

  • How do I become a freelance proofreader without a degree or experience?
  • Can I start my own business instead of working for proofreading and editing companies?
  • How much can I earn per hour as a proofreader?

Keep reading for the answers to those questions.

How do I become a freelance proofreader without a degree?

You probably noticed that many of the proofreading jobs above require their editors and proofreaders have a degree or even a master’s or PhD! So it is even possible to become a proofreader without a degree?

Yes, you don’t need to have a degree to start your own proofreading business. You can market your business to get your own clients without relying on proofreading companies.

When you work with proofreading agencies, they keep a percentage of the profits—sometimes even as much as 50%! Getting your own clients means that you get to keep all the money for the project (minus transaction fees).

Start Your Own Proofreading Business

The first step to starting your own proofreading business is making sure that you have the appropriate skills and resources.

One course that I have personally taken and can recommend is Proofread Anywhere’s  General Proofreading: Theory and Practice course . It includes lots of worksheets and essays so you can practice your proofreading skills as well as an entire module dedicated to teaching you how to market your business to get clients.

***Proofread Anywhere is 70% off until August 10 with the code FLASH70!***

Sign up for a  free Intro to Proofreading workshop  to learn how you can become a proofreader.

Once you have the appropriate training, you need to gather your resources including a laptop/desktop computer, editing software, and  proofreading books and style guides .

Can you make money proofreading?

One of the most common questions I get asked about working as a proofreader online is “Can you make money proofreading?” The answer is YES! You won’t become a millionaire by proofreading, but you can make a decent living.

According to ZipRecruiter, a freelance proofreader in the United States can earn an  average of $51,391 per year  or $22/hour (as at August 11, 2020).

Caitlin Pyle of Proofread Anywhere  earned $43,000 a year as a part-time proofreader!

How much should I charge for proofreading per hour?

How much you can charge for proofreading depends on many factors. If you work for a proofreading agency, it will decide how much you will be paid. However, if you start your own proofreading business, you can set your own rates.

Proofreaders can charge per word, per page, per hour, or per project. It depends on the type of document you’re working on.

Some editorial associations publish median rates that they have compiled by surveying their members. According to the  Editorial Freelancers Association  (EFA), proofreaders can charge between $0.02 and $0.03 per word or between $40 and $50 per hour for proofreading nonfiction (as of January 2024).

The  Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders  (CIEP) suggests a minimum hourly rate for proofreading of £29.85, and a minimum hourly rate of £34.70 for copyediting (as of March 2024).

I cover how much proofreaders make in more detail in this post.

Hi! Great Blog!! Informative, educational and a great resource. Thank you for sharing, continued success and many blessings. Mia, Retired Bilingual (Spanish), soon to be trilingual, (Italian) BA American and English Literature looking for remote work to supplement income.

Sunday 2nd of January 2022

I see most of the remote hirers require a degree or higher to even have a foot in the door. But I am doing proofreading for a beauty SME without it. Coming from a non-native English speaking country, it's a challenge to earn a decent regular income without the paper qualifications.

But, I like to thank you for your detailed written sharing which I usually read with a tinge of sigh.

Saint Anne's, Morton hospitals will have new owner: Lifespan announces $175M deal

proofreading jobs medical

Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River and Morton Hospital in Taunton will have a new owner, with nonprofit Rhode Island healthcare provider Lifespan agreeing to buy both operations.

Lifespan announced Thursday it will purchase the hospital operations, the buildings and their land for $175 million.

Lifespan CEO John Fernandez said his company was purchasing the hospital licenses and operations from Steward Health Care and the property from Medical Properties Trust via its lender, Apollo Global Management.

“We’re very excited about it," Fernandez said in an interview. “I’ve got to tip my hat to the people that work there. They’ve been through a lot, a lot more than we have during the last several months of having such uncertainty.”

How will Lifespan pay for the deal?

In May, the for-profit Steward abruptly filed for bankruptcy, throwing into question the future of its eight hospitals across Massachusetts, among others nationwide. In its filing, it revealed it owed money to more than 100,000 creditors in an amount ranging in the billions.

Among its debts was $50 million to its landlord, Medical Properties Trust, an Alabama-based real estate firm. MPT bought Steward hospital buildings and land from Steward — including Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, Morton Hospital in Taunton and St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River — and leased them back to Steward.

Lifespan said the bulk of the $175 million purchase price would go toward purchasing the land and buildings.

The deal would be debt-financed. The company said it would receive "receive modest support from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for a limited timeframe, to support hospital operations." Earlier this week, Gov. Maura Healey announced a plan to bail out five bankrupt Steward Health Care hospitals in a deal that could cost $700 million by 2027.

Fernandez said Lifespan and the state “had yet to work out the exact agreement” in terms of how much money the company would receive. That deal would be worked out during closing, expected to happen within the next month.

The deal is still contingent upon approval by court and regulatory approval. If approved, the two hospitals would be owned by Lifespan of Massachusetts, a nonprofit affiliate of Lifespan.

Also Thursday, Healey's administration announced Lawrence General Hospital agreed to buy and operate both campuses of Holy Family Hospital in Haverhill and Methuen.

Will anyone at Saint Anne's or Morton hospitals lose their jobs?

Fernandez said no staff at either hospital is expected to lose their job, from janitors to physicians.

“We need more people, not less," Fernandez said. “We plan to retain the staff and just move forward.

“We probably need more staff, because of nursing shortages, et cetera. In health care right now, I wish I had the problem of too many people.”

He said his company has worked on a transition services agreement with Steward, with the process expected to take a year to 18 months.

“We have to get in and assess what needs to be fixed quickly and what needs to be implemented over time,” he said.

Fall River and Taunton mayors encouraged by hospital sales

Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan confirmed he has had multiple communications with Fernandez regarding the sale, and will meet with him in person soon.

"We're going to have a meeting about the hospital. He's very encouraged and looking forward to doing whatever they can to keep Saint Anne's going and improve it," Coogan said.

Both Coogan and Taunton Mayor Shaunna O'Connell earlier this year appeared at rallies in their respective cities to save the hospitals. Saint Anne's Hospital employs about 1,500 people; Morton employs several hundred more.

"We are excited to welcome Lifespan to our community to continue to provide the excellent level of care people have always received at Morton Hospital," O'Connell said. "We are thankful for the advocacy and support from our residents and many organizations and officials, particularly the Healey Administration."

What is Lifespan and what does it own?

Lifespan was founded in 1994 by Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital. It's Rhode Island's largest health care system as well as the state's largest employer. Lifespan already operates a Hasbro Children's Specialty Practice in Fall River. In June, Lifespan announced it would rebrand itself as Brown University Health; Lifespan and Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School are affiliated.

The Fall River and Taunton hospitals would join Lifespan’s network of over 1,600 hospitals and clinics, including Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Newport Hospital and others.

“We look forward to working with them and really digging in and finding out how we can make these thriving organizations in these two communities,” Fernandez said.

Healthcare workers' unions react to sale, and blast Steward

Tim Foley, executive vice president of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the union representing many employees at both Saint Anne’s and Morton, stated that he was pleased by the news.

“Four of the eight Steward hospitals are now safe from the financial brinksmanship of Steward and its investors,” he said in a statement. “Now, with Steward’s greed and mismanagement in the rear-view mirror at these sites, we can turn our full attention to the essential work of rebuilding our hospitals and caring for our patients.”

Foley called on Steward to finalize sales of Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood.

The bankruptcy court has approved Steward’s plans to close Carney Hospital in Dorchester and Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer by Aug. 3. Foley said Steward must “pay all laid-off workers what they are owed in accumulated PTO and severance pay.”

“Massachusetts is turning a new page in our healthcare system today, but workers will not forget how Steward’s investors spent years draining resources from these hospitals to fuel their profits,” Foley said. “They still need to be held fully accountable for their misconduct and greed.”

A statement from the Massachusetts Nurses Association, which represents more than 400 registered nurses at Morton, said the union would "review the full details of the agreement before issuing our final judgment on these transactions."

"While obviously hopeful and welcome news for the RNs and health professionals who have held the line throughout this process, it is even more important for the hundreds of thousands of residents who are served by these facilities, residents whose health and safety depend on the success of these transactions and the transition of the facilities to the new owners," the statement read in part.

"Our main concern is that our members, who have held the line throughout this grueling ordeal, must be assured that any final agreement stipulates that our members’ union contracts, with all existing rights and benefits, including their pension benefits, will be maintained by the new owners."

The press conference as usual started with a video presentation — a film about air medical service, which is reviving in Russia, in which Tatarstan is actively involved. Marat Sadykov reminded that in 2017 the republic has already been given an Ansat air medical helicopter:

''The air medical fleet of the republic now consists of an Ansat helicopter, Robinson helicopter and Mi-8 helicopter. The Robinson is not used to transport patients, but to allow our specialists to fly to the districts for consultations. We plan to use two Ansat helicopters. What amount will be allocated by the Russian government will become known after December 30.''

Modernization continues

''We have completed the unique two-year programme of modernization of the primary care,'' the minister reported. ''By the end of the year, 187 polyclinics have been commissioned and equipped with new equipment and furniture in Tatarstan. Our pride is the large-scale modernization of children's polyclinics, which we started much earlier than other regions of the country.''

Next thing in the agenda, as it turned out, is the modernization of psychiatric clinics in Kazan that have long been in need of updating, where mentally ill people are kept in conditions of not even the past, but of the century before last:

''The legendary Republican clinical psychiatric hospital celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019. A programme for the modernization of mental health service in the building has already been prepared. Everything will be carried out in stages, it is necessary to systematically build its work. First of all, it is necessary, to put it mildly, to improve the conditions, in which people work. On the psychiatric policlinic on Butlerov Street, the money has already been allocated, the works begin in 2019.''

From data collection to quality treatment

Not the first, but among the first 20 regions of Russia, Tatarstan has started drawing up passports of health of all regions of the republic. Marat Sadykov stressed that this is not an end in itself, he explained to the correspondent of Realnoe Vremya that the purpose of documentation is to identify the characteristics and causes of morbidity, and later — the development of comprehensive programmes for the prevention of certain diseases peculiar to the region.

According to the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, Kazan this year has been among the fifteen leading cities by the quality of medical care. Other fourteen are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Surgut, Balashikha, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg, Sochi, Petrozavodsk, Yoshkar-Ola, Khimki, Cheboksary, Yakutsk, Volzhsky and Cherepovets.

The minister reported that next year the ministry plans to ''continue the development of health informatization and the introduction of telemedicine.''

Help to cancer patients will become closer

The implementation of a pilot project in the field of oncology will continue next year. In order to increase the availability of specialized cancer care in Almetyevsk, it has been laid the basis of the future radiological building, which will reduce the flow of patients to Kazan, taking over the treatment of residents of the north-east of Tatarstan.

''Despite the increase in the incidence of tumors, for 9 months of 2018, compared to the same period of 2017, we noted a decrease in the mortality of the working-age population of Tatarstan from cancer,'' Marat Sadykov cautiously rejoiced. ''The indicator for 9 months of 2018 amounted to 69,5 per 100,000 population.''

Persuasion is also a treatment

One of the important directions of work the ministry considers to be… propaganda. And it's not about campaigning for healthy lifestyle, although this, as the minister of health told the correspondent of Realnoe Vremya, is also an important task. But it is very important, he said, to systematically conduct interdepartmental work to reduce the number of those who refused the set of social services in favour of monetary compensation. After all, the more people choose money, the less money is left for the purchase of expensive drugs for beneficiaries.

''Over the past five years, ''refusers'' from benefits decreased by 7 per cent, and this allowed us to maintain this year the lowest rate of refusals in the Volga Federal District — 66,9 per cent (the average for the Volga Federal District — 82,5),'' the minister cautiously rejoiced.

GRAPHIC: Doctor’s license suspended after alleged sexual and ‘disruptive’ behavior

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - A Virginia doctor’s medical license has been suspended after reports of misconduct, according to documents obtained by WDBJ7.

Dr. Dalton Renick’s license was suspended Thursday for several alleged violations of state health code, which, according to a Virginia Department of Health Professions report, occurred between August 2021 and February 2024 when Renick was a pediatrician and “engaged in behavior of a sexual nature as well as engaged in an egregious pattern of disruptive behavior.”

Renick was employed by Carilion Clinic and, more recently, at New Beginnings Pediatrics in Blacksburg.

Some of the allegations listed in the report include Renick:

  • Using the f-word dozens of times in front of patients, including children
  • Calling a newborn “stupid”
  • Discussing “how good newborn babies smell”
  • Saying how when he smelled a young girl it made him want to have sex with children
  • Comparing syringe feeding to a sexual act
  • Telling a child his head was “so big he would not be able to get through the door”
  • Comparing “spit up” on someone’s shirt to a bodily fluid
  • Calling a child patient “re-----d”
  • Telling a woman her breasts were “magic” or “amazing”
  • Telling a pregnant woman she was “fat as f---”
  • Implying a nurse contributed to the death of a child patient
  • Making racist remarks
  • Telling a woman “if anyone was going to get cancer and die it would be you”

When spoken to about his behavior, Renick said he was “joking” and that people didn’t understand his sense of humor, the report said.

He also admitted to saying he wanted to have sex with newborn children, telling his superiors in a meeting that “when you love something so much, you just want to f--- it,” the report said.

Carilion Clinic released the following statement to WDBJ:

“The claims contained in the BOM Notice of Hearing are concerning to us, and we take such allegations very seriously. While we can confirm that Dr. Renick’s employment was terminated on February 8, 2024, at the conclusion of a confidential employment investigation, we are unable to provide any comments or details regarding this personnel matter. We continue to cooperate with the Board of Medicine as they investigate this matter.”

New Beginnings Pediatrics also released a statement online Saturday saying:

“On August 22 we were made aware of concerning allegations against Dr. Dalton Renick. This was not made accessible to the public, including us, until then and we have responded as fast as possible. As a result, **effective immediately Dr. Renick is no longer employed or has any association with New Beginnings Pediatrics.** While at this time we have not received any complaints at New Beginnings, but we are taking this seriously and will cooperate with the investigation as needed. He will no longer be seeing any of our patients. We remain committed to providing the best care possible to our families and will protect our patients and their families at all costs.”
