65+ Real-World Project-Based Learning Ideas for All Ages and Interests

Find and implement solutions to real-world problems.

Collage of project based learning ideas, including a school garden and volunteering with seniors

Project-based learning is a hot topic in many schools these days, as educators work to make learning more meaningful for students. As students conduct hands-on projects addressing real-world issues, they dig deeper and make personal connections to the knowledge and skills they’re gaining. But not just any project fits into this concept. Learn more about strong project-based learning ideas, and find examples for any age or passion.

What is project-based learning?

Project-based learning (PBL) uses real-world projects and student-directed activities to build knowledge and skills. Kids choose a real-world topic that’s meaningful to them (some people call these “passion projects”), so they’re engaged in the process from the beginning. These projects are long-term, taking weeks, months, or even a full semester or school year. Students may complete them independently or working in small groups. Learn much more about project-based learning here.

What makes a good PBL project?

Chart showing the difference between traditional projects and project based learning

In many ways, PBL is more like the work adults do in their daily jobs, especially because student efforts have potential real-world effects. A strong PBL project:

  • Addresses a real-world issue or problem
  • Requires sustained and independent inquiry, in and out of the classroom
  • Allows students voice and choice throughout the project
  • Combines elements of many disciplines
  • Includes collaboration with public partners, such as universities, community organizations, or businesses
  • Produces a public product that is seen by those outside the school community
  • Covers a complete process, including activities like research, design, production, marketing or public awareness, and enlisting supporters or investors

The 10 Most Significant Education Studies of 2021

From reframing our notion of “good” schools to mining the magic of expert teachers, here’s a curated list of must-read research from 2021.

It was a year of unprecedented hardship for teachers and school leaders. We pored through hundreds of studies to see if we could follow the trail of exactly what happened: The research revealed a complex portrait of a grueling year during which persistent issues of burnout and mental and physical health impacted millions of educators. Meanwhile, many of the old debates continued: Does paper beat digital? Is project-based learning as effective as direct instruction? How do you define what a “good” school is?

Other studies grabbed our attention, and in a few cases, made headlines. Researchers from the University of Chicago and Columbia University turned artificial intelligence loose on some 1,130 award-winning children’s books in search of invisible patterns of bias. (Spoiler alert: They found some.) Another study revealed why many parents are reluctant to support social and emotional learning in schools—and provided hints about how educators can flip the script.

1. What Parents Fear About SEL (and How to Change Their Minds)

When researchers at the Fordham Institute asked parents to rank phrases associated with social and emotional learning , nothing seemed to add up. The term “social-emotional learning” was very unpopular; parents wanted to steer their kids clear of it. But when the researchers added a simple clause, forming a new phrase—”social-emotional & academic learning”—the program shot all the way up to No. 2 in the rankings.

What gives?

Parents were picking up subtle cues in the list of SEL-related terms that irked or worried them, the researchers suggest. Phrases like “soft skills” and “growth mindset” felt “nebulous” and devoid of academic content. For some, the language felt suspiciously like “code for liberal indoctrination.”

But the study suggests that parents might need the simplest of reassurances to break through the political noise. Removing the jargon, focusing on productive phrases like “life skills,” and relentlessly connecting SEL to academic progress puts parents at ease—and seems to save social and emotional learning in the process.

2. The Secret Management Techniques of Expert Teachers

In the hands of experienced teachers, classroom management can seem almost invisible: Subtle techniques are quietly at work behind the scenes, with students falling into orderly routines and engaging in rigorous academic tasks almost as if by magic.

That’s no accident, according to new research . While outbursts are inevitable in school settings, expert teachers seed their classrooms with proactive, relationship-building strategies that often prevent misbehavior before it erupts. They also approach discipline more holistically than their less-experienced counterparts, consistently reframing misbehavior in the broader context of how lessons can be more engaging, or how clearly they communicate expectations.

Focusing on the underlying dynamics of classroom behavior—and not on surface-level disruptions—means that expert teachers often look the other way at all the right times, too. Rather than rise to the bait of a minor breach in etiquette, a common mistake of new teachers, they tend to play the long game, asking questions about the origins of misbehavior, deftly navigating the terrain between discipline and student autonomy, and opting to confront misconduct privately when possible.

3. The Surprising Power of Pretesting

Asking students to take a practice test before they’ve even encountered the material may seem like a waste of time—after all, they’d just be guessing.

But new research concludes that the approach, called pretesting, is actually more effective than other typical study strategies. Surprisingly, pretesting even beat out taking practice tests after learning the material, a proven strategy endorsed by cognitive scientists and educators alike. In the study, students who took a practice test before learning the material outperformed their peers who studied more traditionally by 49 percent on a follow-up test, while outperforming students who took practice tests after studying the material by 27 percent.

The researchers hypothesize that the “generation of errors” was a key to the strategy’s success, spurring student curiosity and priming them to “search for the correct answers” when they finally explored the new material—and adding grist to a 2018 study that found that making educated guesses helped students connect background knowledge to new material.

Learning is more durable when students do the hard work of correcting misconceptions, the research suggests, reminding us yet again that being wrong is an important milestone on the road to being right.

4. Confronting an Old Myth About Immigrant Students

Immigrant students are sometimes portrayed as a costly expense to the education system, but new research is systematically dismantling that myth.

In a 2021 study , researchers analyzed over 1.3 million academic and birth records for students in Florida communities, and concluded that the presence of immigrant students actually has “a positive effect on the academic achievement of U.S.-born students,” raising test scores as the size of the immigrant school population increases. The benefits were especially powerful for low-income students.

While immigrants initially “face challenges in assimilation that may require additional school resources,” the researchers concluded, hard work and resilience may allow them to excel and thus “positively affect exposed U.S.-born students’ attitudes and behavior.” But according to teacher Larry Ferlazzo, the improvements might stem from the fact that having English language learners in classes improves pedagogy , pushing teachers to consider “issues like prior knowledge, scaffolding, and maximizing accessibility.”

5. A Fuller Picture of What a ‘Good’ School Is

It’s time to rethink our definition of what a “good school” is, researchers assert in a study published in late 2020.⁣ That’s because typical measures of school quality like test scores often provide an incomplete and misleading picture, the researchers found.

The study looked at over 150,000 ninth-grade students who attended Chicago public schools and concluded that emphasizing the social and emotional dimensions of learning—relationship-building, a sense of belonging, and resilience, for example—improves high school graduation and college matriculation rates for both high- and low-income students, beating out schools that focus primarily on improving test scores.⁣

“Schools that promote socio-emotional development actually have a really big positive impact on kids,” said lead researcher C. Kirabo Jackson in an interview with Edutopia . “And these impacts are particularly large for vulnerable student populations who don’t tend to do very well in the education system.”

The findings reinforce the importance of a holistic approach to measuring student progress, and are a reminder that schools—and teachers—can influence students in ways that are difficult to measure, and may only materialize well into the future.⁣

6. Teaching Is Learning

One of the best ways to learn a concept is to teach it to someone else. But do you actually have to step into the shoes of a teacher, or does the mere expectation of teaching do the trick?

In a 2021 study , researchers split students into two groups and gave them each a science passage about the Doppler effect—a phenomenon associated with sound and light waves that explains the gradual change in tone and pitch as a car races off into the distance, for example. One group studied the text as preparation for a test; the other was told that they’d be teaching the material to another student.

The researchers never carried out the second half of the activity—students read the passages but never taught the lesson. All of the participants were then tested on their factual recall of the Doppler effect, and their ability to draw deeper conclusions from the reading.

The upshot? Students who prepared to teach outperformed their counterparts in both duration and depth of learning, scoring 9 percent higher on factual recall a week after the lessons concluded, and 24 percent higher on their ability to make inferences. The research suggests that asking students to prepare to teach something—or encouraging them to think “could I teach this to someone else?”—can significantly alter their learning trajectories.

7. A Disturbing Strain of Bias in Kids’ Books

Some of the most popular and well-regarded children’s books—Caldecott and Newbery honorees among them—persistently depict Black, Asian, and Hispanic characters with lighter skin, according to new research .

Using artificial intelligence, researchers combed through 1,130 children’s books written in the last century, comparing two sets of diverse children’s books—one a collection of popular books that garnered major literary awards, the other favored by identity-based awards. The software analyzed data on skin tone, race, age, and gender.

Among the findings: While more characters with darker skin color begin to appear over time, the most popular books—those most frequently checked out of libraries and lining classroom bookshelves—continue to depict people of color in lighter skin tones. More insidiously, when adult characters are “moral or upstanding,” their skin color tends to appear lighter, the study’s lead author, Anjali Aduki,  told The 74 , with some books converting “Martin Luther King Jr.’s chocolate complexion to a light brown or beige.” Female characters, meanwhile, are often seen but not heard.

Cultural representations are a reflection of our values, the researchers conclude: “Inequality in representation, therefore, constitutes an explicit statement of inequality of value.”

8. The Never-Ending ‘Paper Versus Digital’ War

The argument goes like this: Digital screens turn reading into a cold and impersonal task; they’re good for information foraging, and not much more. “Real” books, meanwhile, have a heft and “tactility”  that make them intimate, enchanting—and irreplaceable.

But researchers have often found weak or equivocal evidence for the superiority of reading on paper. While a recent study concluded that paper books yielded better comprehension than e-books when many of the digital tools had been removed, the effect sizes were small. A 2021 meta-analysis further muddies the water: When digital and paper books are “mostly similar,” kids comprehend the print version more readily—but when enhancements like motion and sound “target the story content,” e-books generally have the edge.

Nostalgia is a force that every new technology must eventually confront. There’s plenty of evidence that writing with pen and paper encodes learning more deeply than typing. But new digital book formats come preloaded with powerful tools that allow readers to annotate, look up words, answer embedded questions, and share their thinking with other readers.

We may not be ready to admit it, but these are precisely the kinds of activities that drive deeper engagement, enhance comprehension, and leave us with a lasting memory of what we’ve read. The future of e-reading, despite the naysayers, remains promising.

9. New Research Makes a Powerful Case for PBL

Many classrooms today still look like they did 100 years ago, when students were preparing for factory jobs. But the world’s moved on: Modern careers demand a more sophisticated set of skills—collaboration, advanced problem-solving, and creativity, for example—and those can be difficult to teach in classrooms that rarely give students the time and space to develop those competencies.

Project-based learning (PBL) would seem like an ideal solution. But critics say PBL places too much responsibility on novice learners, ignoring the evidence about the effectiveness of direct instruction and ultimately undermining subject fluency. Advocates counter that student-centered learning and direct instruction can and should coexist in classrooms.

Now two new large-scale studies —encompassing over 6,000 students in 114 diverse schools across the nation—provide evidence that a well-structured, project-based approach boosts learning for a wide range of students.

In the studies, which were funded by Lucas Education Research, a sister division of Edutopia , elementary and high school students engaged in challenging projects that had them designing water systems for local farms, or creating toys using simple household objects to learn about gravity, friction, and force. Subsequent testing revealed notable learning gains—well above those experienced by students in traditional classrooms—and those gains seemed to raise all boats, persisting across socioeconomic class, race, and reading levels.

10. Tracking a Tumultuous Year for Teachers

The Covid-19 pandemic cast a long shadow over the lives of educators in 2021, according to a year’s worth of research.

The average teacher’s workload suddenly “spiked last spring,” wrote the Center for Reinventing Public Education in its January 2021 report, and then—in defiance of the laws of motion—simply never let up. By the fall, a RAND study recorded an astonishing shift in work habits: 24 percent of teachers reported that they were working 56 hours or more per week, compared to 5 percent pre-pandemic.

The vaccine was the promised land, but when it arrived nothing seemed to change. In an April 2021 survey  conducted four months after the first vaccine was administered in New York City, 92 percent of teachers said their jobs were more stressful than prior to the pandemic, up from 81 percent in an earlier survey.

It wasn’t just the length of the work days; a close look at the research reveals that the school system’s failure to adjust expectations was ruinous. It seemed to start with the obligations of hybrid teaching, which surfaced in Edutopia ’s coverage of overseas school reopenings. In June 2020, well before many U.S. schools reopened, we reported that hybrid teaching was an emerging problem internationally, and warned that if the “model is to work well for any period of time,” schools must “recognize and seek to reduce the workload for teachers.” Almost eight months later, a 2021 RAND study identified hybrid teaching as a primary source of teacher stress in the U.S., easily outpacing factors like the health of a high-risk loved one.

New and ever-increasing demands for tech solutions put teachers on a knife’s edge. In several important 2021 studies, researchers concluded that teachers were being pushed to adopt new technology without the “resources and equipment necessary for its correct didactic use.” Consequently, they were spending more than 20 hours a week adapting lessons for online use, and experiencing an unprecedented erosion of the boundaries between their work and home lives, leading to an unsustainable “always on” mentality. When it seemed like nothing more could be piled on—when all of the lights were blinking red—the federal government restarted standardized testing .

Change will be hard; many of the pathologies that exist in the system now predate the pandemic. But creating strict school policies that separate work from rest, eliminating the adoption of new tech tools without proper supports, distributing surveys regularly to gauge teacher well-being, and above all listening to educators to identify and confront emerging problems might be a good place to start, if the research can be believed.

🚌 Special Education Research Topics & Ideas

Special education makes it possible for students with special needs to receive all the individual support they require. There are plenty of interesting special education research topics you can choose from:

  • Practical approaches to teaching students with an auditory processing disorder. The percentage of children diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder (APD) is rising. Despite the difficulty in diagnosing, there is believed to be at least 5% of students having this learning disorder. It doesn’t affect the hearing itself but makes it hard for children to process what they hear.
  • Music therapy for children on the autism spectrum : what instruments are the most effective? Children on the autism spectrum find it difficult to interact socially. Some studies show that music therapy helps them become more flexible and responsive. In turn, it promotes the development of their social skills. For example, the didgeridoo playing showed significant results.
  • Karaoke as a way to help children with learning disorders . Kids with learning disabilities need special care. It is one of the research paper topics on education which can bring a brilliant solution! It has been shown that children with learning disorders did much better in reading tests after doing karaoke-based exercises.

Karaoke as a way to help children with learning disorders.

  • How does peer support help children with disabilities socialize in the classroom? We have already mentioned a topic related to peer review, which is quite a good one for the thesis. Here, you can study how peers can help their classmates with special needs. It is especially relevant for schools with inclusivity policies.
  • Cooperative learning & students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder . Cooperative learning is vital in early childhood. Most schools choose this approach because of its apparent benefits. However, kids with ADHD might see it as a real challenge. Look into the best ways to engage them in cooperative learning activities without harm.
  • Social skills : the best time for children with EBD to learn them. It is one of the research topics in social studies education. Secondary school becomes a tough period for students with emotional and behavioral disorders. It is the time when social skills training is as relevant for them as never before. However, what is the best time to start SST?
  • How to develop self-determination in children with disabilities ? Self-determination is one of the most vital components of growing up. Every independent human being needs to have it developed. But what about children with special needs? Since they rely heavily on support, it is the educators’ responsibility to help them build self-determination.
  • What are the negative sides of the response to intervention approach ? Response to intervention is not a new method. However, it has appeared to be controversial. It not only focuses on children with special needs but on every student who struggles to achieve a specific level. Some evaluations show its ineffectiveness, though.
  • Inclusive classes vs. special education . It is one of the most relevant child development research paper topics. Special education classes were created out of fear that students with learning disabilities cannot reach the same level of academic achievement in usual courses. However, it seems that the performance is the same in both approaches.
  • How does grade retention affect children with learning disabilities ? Even frequent testing can be a stress for any student. How do children with learning disorders feel then? What’s more, they are put under more pressure if they need to repeat the year? Therefore, some particular approaches need to be applied to prevent it.
  • Why should students with learning disabilities be included in the Adequate Yearly Progress evaluation?

👶 Child Development Research Topics & Ideas

Child development is a vast area since it covers both the physical and mental development of a child from birth to adulthood. Below you can find 30 child development research topics suitable for your project or even a dissertation!

  • Mother-child connection: how does stress affect a child’s wellbeing? Everyone knows about the mother-child connection, but not many know how deep it is. During pregnancy, a woman can get into a stressful situation. It may cause chemical reactions in the brain of a child, which, in turn, affects its future health.
  • What role do genes play in child development ? Some of us are used to blaming genes for one thing or another. However, it appears that the environment in which we grow up is much more critical. You can debate on how a child’s environment cases chemical modifications in genes.
  • How does living in a community affect child development ? Of course, parents are the primary caregivers for small children. On the other hand, there are advocates for shared responsibilities. In communities, kids interact mostly with close neighbors. A child is open to more experience this way. Elaborate on this topic.

Alfie Kohn Quote.

  • Child development : does it slow down after the third birthday? It is true that in the first three years of life, children develop the most basic brain functions very actively. However, it doesn’t mean that after that they can’t learn anything new! So what areas of the brain stop active development after the child’s third birthday, if any?
  • How is neglecting and ignoring your child worse than physical punishment? Physical violence against children is addressed as one of the main issues in child development. Undoubtedly, it has incredibly adverse effects on a child’s mental health. However, neglect is often omitted. It may cause severe disruptions in the healthy social life and development of a child.
  • Childhood trauma & happy life. Children who faced violence or any other unpleasant experience have a higher risk of developing stress-related disorders. On the other hand, it is not a rule. If a child gets sufficient support as soon as possible, traumas may just become a neutral life experience for them.
  • What care should traumatized children be provided? It is not enough to just save a child from a traumatizing environment. They can still feel insecure even in safe and predictable surroundings. This situation would require more than one action. A child needs therapeutic care for sooner recovery.
  • Child development: coping with troubles alone or in a team? Usually, parents try to teach their children to become more independent. Being brave and only relying on yourself is promoted as socially acceptable behavior. But scientists found out that it’s not individualism that helps to overcome obstacles but supportive relationships.
  • Responsive relationships & child development . It appears that having a healthy relationship with parents in childhood is related to having good mental health. Parents should practice responsive relationships with their children. It promotes healthy brain development and resilience in kids. You can research this connection.
  • Why should parents teach core life skills to their children? Children are capable of learning how to adapt to life on their own. But researchers highlight that parents can significantly help in this process by teaching core life skills to children. This scaffolding process helps kids learn, develop, and make healthy life choices.
  • Why is reducing stress essential for child development?

🤔 Education Research FAQs

Research in education is important because it contributes to the development in the field. Proving theories, creating new methodologies, and practical solutions are all the outcomes of the research in the education area. It plays a vital role – bringing innovation and progress. It also enables teachers to perfect the learning processes for the benefit of the students.

Research is important in child development because it helps find ways to improve children’s quality of life. Environment, teachers, and relationships have a profound impact on child development. All the children’s basic needs should be met to secure their healthy development. Therefore, it is crucial to find the best solutions for any issues arising in those three aspects. That is why the research is done in child development.

It may not be easy to design and evaluate research in education, but comprehensive guidelines make the process much smoother. First of all, choose the topic you want to work on. Then think about the research methodologies and pick the one which works best. After that, be ready to spend quite a while on the steps like data analysis and writing research proposals.

Action research in education is anything related to evaluating and analyzing issues and weak spots in the learning process. Unlike other types of research, this one is very practical. It may help teachers transition from the old methodologies to newer and more effective ones. Teachers get practical solutions to solve problems in the education process and meet the special needs of their students.

Both culture and ethics influence child development research in many ways. It is especially important if your research is done internationally. Cultural differences should be taken into consideration while collecting and analyzing data. Ethics, on the other hand, influences the whole process. While researching early childhood development, for example, remember about consent and anonymity of the groups.

Project Ideas

“Project Ideas” are a series of ideas shared by us to provide a starting point for students to develop their own projects that utilise 3D printing for prototyping and/or to enhance the final solution.

Many of the ideas can provide suitable starting points for students in Further or Higher Education who are undertaking their own personal projects, allowing them to adapt and extend the projects to develop new outcomes.

Some of these projects could also be tackled in a similar way by high school students undertaking individual project work. Alternatively suitable projects could be selected by teachers and assigned to teams of students in a project based learning approach.

A series of editable templates and resources have been developed to support the project based learning approach. These include:

  • Project Planning Templates – A series of editable templates for course leaders or teachers to use when planning student projects.
  • Presentation Templates – A series of editable PowerPoint slides for course leaders or teachers to use for presenting project stages to groups of students.
  • Student Project Worksheets – A series of editable worksheets for individuals or groups of students to use for planning and documenting their projects.

Who, What, Why: Ariana Jimenez and the High School Voter Project

As part of a student-run, nonpartisan, netter center initiative, jimenez focuses on youth voter registration, civic engagement, and education in west philadelphia..

Ariana Jimenez stands in the foreground of a high school classroom

Never underestimate the power of free food. In the case of Ariana Jimenez of Plainfield, Illinois, it was the lure of pizza that first brought her to a voter registration drive, to sign up to vote in the state primary. “17-year-old me was very into free pizza,” Jimenez says. She also learned how to register high school peers and speak with them about voter education, becoming an election ambassador for her county.

Now a fourth-year student in the Wharton School studying business economics and public policy, with a second concentration in management, Jimenez continues to speak with high school students about civic engagement—this time in West Philadelphia.

While looking for a work-study job in her first year of college, Jimenez saw a posting for the High School Voter Project. Founded in 2020, the summer before Jimenez started, the High School Voter Project is a student-run, nonpartisan initiative supported by Penn’s Netter Center for Community Partnerships that focuses on youth voter registration, civic engagement, and education. The program also promotes forms of advocacy beyond voting, especially to engage students under 18, including opportunities to speak with local legislators and to run campaigns at their school.

On Thursdays, Jimenez goes to Sayre High School, where the High School Voter program focuses on pre-professionalism, teaching them interviewing and email writing skills in addition to civic engagement. During these sessions, Jimenez and other volunteers mentor use a problem-solving approach to tackle issues the students identify: gun violence, the affordability crisis, and improving public schools.

Jimenez says the mentoring focuses on current events and community issues the students care about, which helps the Sayre students understand how voting impacts their lives. She points to an example when the high school students offered their thoughts about public transit citing concerns about safety, timeliness, and cleanliness. The team, says Jimenez, turned it around to address how voting impacts public policy.

Asking the students, “Who’s in charge of making those decisions?” helped them realized that the SEPTA board is partially appointed by the Philadelphia mayor and city council, Jimenez says, drawing “connections to how who they vote for actually directly impacts their lives.”

She is passionate about the work. “Voting is fundamental to have a say in everything that goes on in this country,” Jimenez says. “That’s why it’s essential that all communities have voter access.”

HP PCs - Connecting a monitor, projector, or TV (Windows)

This document provides information to help you connect monitors, projectors, or TVs to your HP computer.

Types of video connectors for computer display devices

Know the video connectors on your computer and display devices to avoid problems and get the best possible picture quality.

Types of display adapters

If the video connector on your computer does not match the video connector on your display device, you can use an adapter.

Connect the video and power cables

After identifying the video connectors on your computer and display device, make sure that you have a compatible video cable and an optional adapter, and then connect the computer to the monitor or projector or TV.

Depending on the model, an HP monitor might be capable of supporting VGA, USB Type-C, HDMI, or DisplayPort inputs. The video mode is determined by the video cable used. The monitor automatically determines which inputs have valid video signals. You can select the inputs through the OSD menu. The monitor ships with select cables. Not all cables shown in this section are included with the monitor.

Connect a video cable.

Except for USB Type-C input, an HP monitor automatically determines which inputs have valid video signals. You must manually select USB Type-C input. To select any input, including USB Type-C, open the OSD menu and select Input .

Connect one end of a VGA cable to the VGA port on the display device and the other end to the VGA port on the source device.

Connecting a VGA cable

Connect one end of a DisplayPort cable to the DisplayPort connector on the display device and the other end to the DisplayPort connector on the source device.

Connecting a DisplayPort cable

Connect one end of a Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort connector on the display device and the other end to the DisplayPort connector on the source device.

Connecting a mini-DisplayPort cable

If you are using an HP monitor, depending on your DisplayPort cable connection, either the DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort input video connection is disabled between the monitor and connected computer after the computer exits Sleep or loses the input signal. When the system wakes from the Sleep state, the monitor automatically scans to an active input video signal.

If your last video input connection was to DisplayPort, the monitor automatically scans and switches to USB Type-C video, DisplayPort, or HDMI video input source, but not to Mini DisplayPort. If your last video connection was to Mini DisplayPort, the monitor automatically scans and switches to USB Type-C video, Mini DisplayPort, or HDMI, but not to DisplayPort.

You must reconnect to the correct DisplayPort (DisplayPort 1) or Mini DisplayPort (DisplayPort 2) input using the OSD menu. To reconnect, press the OSD button on the monitor, select Menu , select Input , and then select a DisplayPort setting.

Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the display device and the other end to the HDMI port on the source device.

Connecting the HDMI cable

Connect one end of a USB Type-C cable to the USB Type-C port on the display device and the other end to the USB Type-C port on the source device.

Connecting a USB Type-C and DisplayPort cable to a USB Type-C and DisplayPort port on a source device.

If you are using an HP monitor, use only the USB Type-C cable provided with the monitor. The monitor’s USB Type-C port provides network, data, video, and power delivery (up to 65 W).

The computer must be able to support DisplayPort Alt Mode (video, charging, and USB 3.1) over the USB Type-C connector. The computer must also be compatible with USB Type-C-Thunderbolt™-enabled ports.

Connect any peripherals to the display device.

Connect the display device and computer to AC power.

Turn on the computer and the display device.

If you are not using an HP monitor, select the correct video source on the monitor, projector, or TV. For example, if you are using an HDMI port, set the source to HDMI.

Additional information

Associate Professor Takuma Izumi of the NAOJ ALMA Project and Associate Professor Teruyuki Hirano of the NINS Astrobiology Center (concurrently appointed to Subaru Telescope) received the Young Scientists’ Award in The Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2024.

Associate Professor Izumi received the award in recognition of his observational research on the diverse structures of material around active galactic nuclei.

When a large amount of matter falls into the supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy, it creates a brightly shining region referred to as an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Although AGNs are important observational targets for elucidating the growth process of supermassive black holes and the birth and coevolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies, the details of the material state around AGNs has not been clarified due to their very small size and the complexity of the various types of materials mixed therein. Associate Professor Izumi conducted observations taking advantage of ALMA's high resolution. He was the first to observe that multiphase materials such as molecules, atoms, and plasmas take on unique chemical compositions in the immediate vicinity of a black hole, and then dynamically interact to give rise to the black hole's accretion flows and gas outflows.

Associate Professor Hirano received the award in recognition of his work on observations of exoplanets around low-mass stars.

Among the rapidly advancing field of exoplanet exploration, the study of terrestrial planet (habitable planet) candidates around low-mass stars that are cooler and dimmer than the Sun is attracting particular attention. Associate Professor Hirano has distinguished himself as an important member of an international research team to search for such planets by independently analyzing data obtained by space telescopes and conduct follow-up observations. Along with leading to the discovery of dozens of planets, his work has produced new observational knowledge, such as a correlation between the radius of a planet and the metallicity of its host star. In addition, he laid the foundation for surveys of planets orbiting low-mass stars by establishing a new data analysis method to obtain the radial velocity of low-mass stars with unprecedented accuracy using the near-infrared high-dispersion spectrometer IRD on the Subaru Telescope.

The Young Scientists’ Award in The Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology recognizes young researchers who have made outstanding achievements demonstrating advanced research and development capabilities in exploratory research and research from an original perspective. The awards ceremony was held on April 17, 2024 at the main office of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).

Keem Jones: My time at the National Cannabis Festival, which advocates, entertains

“FREE THE PEOPLE!!! FREE THE PLANTS!!!” screamed a group of marijuana advocates, enthusiasts and consumers gathered in LaFayette Park, across the street from the White House. The 420 Unity Day of Action was held on April 18, just two days before the smoker’s holiday.

The purpose of the vigil was to demand President Joe Biden keep his promise of releasing all cannabis prisoners, according to organizers. The Last Prisoner Project and Students for Sensible Drug Policy, brought together hundreds to call for the descheduling and decriminalization of cannabis. The vigil was a part of 420 week, which concluded with the two-day National Cannabis Festival.

Education, advocacy, entertainment

The festival is about the growth and cultivation of health, wealth and self. Each component is designed to build a better you.

Education, advocacy, and entertainment are the pillars that the National Cannabis Festival sits upon. Caroline Phillips and her group founded the festival in 2015 to celebrate the progress of marijuana legalization. The first festival was held the following year and has grown exponentially since.

Performances by major hip-hop artists are a part of the festival, and past performers include De La Soul, WizKhalifa, Juicy J, and 2 Chainz. This year, the festival was expanded to two days rather than thetraditional one-day festival and Wu-Tang Clan, a legendary hip-hop group closed out the weekend.Other performers included ThunderKatt, Devin The Dude, DC’s own Dior Ashley Brown, Noochie and Backyard Band.

There was a special appearance by Roc-A-Fella signee and Jay-Z protege Memphis Bleek. Bleek ledthe countdown to 4:20 p.m. At that time on April 20, smoke filled the festival grounds as over25,000 attendees lit joints, blunts, bongs and cones in the name of ending marijuana prohibition. To cure the serious case of the munchies, VIP attendees were treated to complimentary food, courtesy of Mission BBQ.

Wu-Tang Clan headlines; Redman appears

Among concert performances, Houston hip-hop legend Devin The Dude took the stage with a thick marijuana cigar and rolled through hits that included 420 anthems like “Doobie Ashtray” and “Highway.” At one point in his performance, Devin acknowledged his maturity after realizing a song he made in his 20s sounds vulgar nowadays in his older age.

Wu-Tang Clan, from the "Slums of Shaolin," came next and the crowd erupted as the New York supergroup took the stage to perform classics in the rap genre, like “Protect Ya Neck,” “Triumph” and “C.R.E.A.M.” In a poignant moment, the late Wu-Tang Clan member ODB’s first-born son joined the group on stage in place of his father.

Another guest appearance: Rapper Redman who is Wu-Tang member Method Man’s partner from the movie and music, "How High." The New Jersey rapper came on stage after being spotted riding around the festival grounds in the back of a golf cart.

Wearing a “Free The Green” T-Shirt to promote the newly-founded United Empowerment Party, Redman paused his performance to deliver a message advocating for the federal legalization of cannabis. Wu-Tang’s performance concluded with well wishes from member Raekwon The Chef, who introduced his new cannabis brand, Hashtoria.

Marijuana acceptance: A slow, deliberate journey in NC

Like Wu-Tang Clan, the process of growth and acceptance of marijuana has been a slow deliberate journey. North Carolina is still one of the 11 states with no form of legalization. However, in the Qwalla Boundary, located in Cherokee, the first-ever medical marijuana dispensary opened its doors. Members of the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association spoke in celebration of The Great Smoky Mountain Cannabis opening.

It is a step in the right direction. However, North Carolina remains reluctant to legalize the plant. House Bill626 seeks to legalize and regulate the sale, possession, and use of cannabis. It has not been enacted intolaw.

The National Cannabis Festival and similar initiatives continue to push for legalization on alllevels. To get involved, log on to www.nationalcannabisfestival.com.

Salute to Carolina and every activist getting active. Peace.
