Warren Sapp's pay at Colorado revealed as graduate assistant football coach

Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp made more than $58 million during his 13-year NFL career but will earn only $150,000 annually in his new entry-level coaching job at Colorado under head coach Deion Sanders, according to employment documents obtained by USA TODAY Sports.

The pay might seem like a comedown for him − $12,500 per month, plus $15,000 in moving expenses. But he wants to work for Sanders , a fellow Pro Football Hall of Famer, and he is starting at the ground floor as a college coach in part because he has little prior coaching experience.

By contrast, as head coach, Sanders is set to make $5.7 million this year.

NCAA rules and Warren Sapp's job title

Sapp's pay still is believed to be on the high end for a graduate assistant coach. It wasn’t until last year that the NCAA lifted the cap on what such coaches could earn after facing a bevy of accusations that similar pay limits violated antitrust laws.

Before the rule change, the NCAA limited compensation for graduate assistant coaches.

The old rule stated, “The individual may not receive compensation or remuneration in excess of the value of a full grant-in-aid for a full-time student, based on the resident status of that individual, and the receipt of four complimentary tickets to all the institution’s intercollegiate athletics events.”

The recent rule change is also why there has been some confusion about his job title. His appointment letter says, “Football Quality Control Senior Analyst.” He’s classified internally that way because the university doesn’t have an internal job code yet to keep up with the rule change and pay him as a graduate assistant, according to the university.

Sapp is enrolled in coursework

Officially, Sapp, 51, is a graduate assistant coach. That means he is required to be enrolled in graduate-level coursework at the school, as the university said he is. He also is not allowed to have off-campus contact with recruits, according to NCAA rules for the position.

The university noted in a statement Monday Sapp passed a background check and had a meeting with Colorado athletic director Rick George to “clearly articulate the department’s standards and expectations, to which he acknowledged and agreed."

The prospect of his hiring previously raised concerns among domestic violence survivor groups .

Colorado is undergoing spring football practices that will conclude with the annual spring game April 27. Sanders finished 4-8 in his first season at Colorado last year, when Sapp visited as a friend and raised the prospect of him joining the football staff.

Lake county news-sun sports | carmel graduate grace sullivan is transferring to northwestern, bringing her burgeoning post game home.

With both excitement and nerves, Carmel graduate Grace Sullivan added her name to a rapidly growing group in late March, entering college basketball’s transfer portal.

After playing two seasons at Bucknell, the 6-foot-4 forward wanted a change of scenery for the second half of her career. Sullivan just didn’t anticipate the response.

“The portal is nuts,” she said. “You hear about things but obviously never hope to experience it. Just five minutes in the portal, I was receiving emails from different schools, texts from coaches who I never talked to before and even coaches who recruited me in the past.”

But Sullivan, who helped Carmel win the 2022 Class 3A state championship, was pleasantly surprised by the amount of attention she received.

“It was so overwhelming,” she said. “I was hoping some cool and big basketball schools would get in touch with me, but I didn’t know what to expect. I was pretty shocked and excited to see some of the schools. It was crazy to see these schools wanted me. It was super rewarding.”

Sullivan didn’t wait long to take advantage of the opportunity. Two days after entering the portal, she put an end to her recruiting by committing to Northwestern on March 29.

Sullivan said the university’s proximity to her home and the chance to play in the Big Ten were key points and that her experience with Northwestern assistant Maggie Lyon and director of basketball operations Karen Stack Umlauf also were factors. Lyon was one of Sullivan’s first AAU coaches, and Stack Umlauf was on the coaching staff of Carmel’s state championship team.

“Coach Maggie was one of the first serious basketball coaches for me, so with her and coach Karen, that’s two amazing female coaches I’ve had in my life already on their staff,” Sullivan said.

She also mentioned the educational opportunity.

“With Northwestern being such a high academic school, it was hard to pass up,” Sullivan said.

But she made clear she enjoyed Bucknell.

“I loved everything about the university,” Sullivan said. “The first two years were an amazing experience. I have no complaints. I met my best friends, teammates and other athletes. I really was able to get the whole student-athlete experience.”

Sullivan’s mother, Jennifer Ferris, said she traveled to the Bucknell campus more than 20 times over the past two years, so she’s looking forward to the shorter commute to Evanston. But Ferris noted the irony that Sullivan’s sister, Abigail, will play college volleyball farther from home.

“Grace is coming back, but Abbey is going off to play volleyball in college,” Ferris said. “Bucknell is a lovely school and was a great basketball experience for her, but now she’s close to home. I promised to give her some space.”

Sullivan showed some promise as a freshman at Bucknell, averaging 3.3 points and 2.7 rebounds, and then became a strong two-way player this past season. Sullivan made 20 starts, had 10 double-digit scoring games and averaged 8.8 points and 4.9 rebounds. She scored a career-high 28 points to go with 10 rebounds against Loyola-Maryland on Feb. 28.

Sullivan credited Bucknell assistant Sherill Baker for helping her improve her post game.

“I really developed and had one of the best post coaches, who was a mentor to me, and her expertise was unmatched,” Sullivan said.

Carmel coach Ben Berg said Sullivan, who started all 116 games in her Carmel career, was a late bloomer.

“I thought she was overlooked a bit,” Berg said. “She didn’t play travel basketball until after her freshman year because of softball. She worked hard at her game.”

Now Sullivan will bring her game back to the Chicago area.

“We’re very proud of Grace and what’s she done in her first two years in college,” Berg said. “We look forward to watching her in the next two years.”

USC DT Bear Alexander to enter transfer portal seeking third school in three years, per reports

Alexander projects as the no. 1 defensive tackle available in the transfer portal, according to 247sports.

USC defensive tackle Bear Alexander plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens next week, according to multiple reports. Alexander started his career at Georgia before transferring to USC last offseason. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 313 pounds, Alexander emerged as an impact player for the Trojans during his lone season on campus. 

The sophomore posted 48 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks and was one of the few bright spots on a struggling USC defense during a disappointing 8-5 campaign. 

Alexander ranks as the No. 1 defensive lineman and No. 14 overall player in the 247Sports transfer portal rankings, edging out Texas A&M EDGE Nic Scourton . He is projected as the top available player in the portal at a position of high value, though more key players could enter in the coming days. 

The Texas native is no stranger to moving. Alexander enrolled at three different public high schools in Texas before finally landing at IMG Academy as a senior. He was a highly recruited player and eventually chose Georgia, where he was viewed by many as the future on the Bulldogs' interior defensive line. Instead, he transferred to USC to help revamp the Trojans' lackluster defense. Now, Alexander is set to join his eighth program in seven years dating back to high school.

Defensive line ranks among the biggest needs across the transfer portal, though Alexander's history of short stays could make major programs wary. Alexander will also be eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft , so any addition could be a one-year rental. Among national contenders, Oregon and Florida State have holes to fill. Ironically, Georgia could use an upgrade inside, though the history may make a reunion unlikely. 

If Alexander wants to move closer to home, almost every major Texas program could use upgrades inside. Texas A&M recruited Alexander hard out of high school and lost a few key playmakers in the portal, including Walter Nolen . Texas lost the top interior combo in college football , though Steve Sarkisian might prove averse to taking the risk with Alexander. Metroplex schools SMU and TCU have consistently taken swings in the portal and would happily make a pitch.

Duke Basketball: Huge Graduate Transfer Hears From Blue Devils

It appears the Duke basketball staff is seeking a veteran presence in the paint.

In this story:

Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer and his gang will welcome two five-star big men to Durham this summer in Khaman Maluach and Patrick Ngongba II. That said, given the expired eligibility of Ryan Young and expected early departure of Kyle Filipowski — not to mention the possibility of a few more undergraduate forwards taking their talents elsewhere — it seems the Blue Devils should be on the lookout for some more experience down low.

After all, Ngongba only recently turned 18 years old, and Maluach won't celebrate that birthday until September.

On that note, it makes sense that Duke has recently been in contact with one of the premier big men in the transfer portal, former Drexel bruiser Amari Williams, On3's Joe Tipton reported on Monday.

The 6-foot-10, 265-pound center, a 22-year-old and three-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year boasting a 7-foot-5 wingspan, has already played four seasons for the Dragons. But he has the option to play one more due to the NCAA not counting the truncated 2020-21 season (his freshman campaign) against anyone's eligibility.

Thus far, Williams has scheduled official visits to St. John's, Indiana, Creighton, and Florida. Assuming the Blue Devils' interest persists, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the England native add Duke to that list.

As a senior this past season for a Drexel squad that finished 20-12 overall and 13-5 in conference play, the durable Amari Williams was on the floor as a starter in every contest. He averaged 12.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 51.7 percent from the field.

Williams is among a handful of players in this year's transfer portal who have reported contact from the Duke basketball coaches. However, he and 6-foot-10 Harvard forward Justice Ajogbor are the only two big men in that bunch.

Six people arrested in storrs as thousands celebrate uconn’s ncaa championship, sports college sports, subscriber only, graduate point guard tristen newton reflects on two-year run at uconn that changed his life.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – After taking in the confetti shower, watching “One Shining Moment” and cutting down the nets, the UConn men’s basketball team had five minutes together in its locker room after winning a second straight national championship on Monday night.

Head coach Dan Hurley walked into the circle of players with cups of water to throw around and was doused before continuing the tradition of slamming a ball into the floor, dislodging a ceiling tile above.

“That’s the best five minutes of the day,” assistant coach Luke Murray said. “Only the guys that are in that room at that time know what we go through.”

For players like Tristen Newton, who’s been with the program for the last two years after transferring in from East Carolina and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, the moment was surreal, a challenge to define with words.

“I wouldn’t trade this for the world,” said the graduate point guard nicknamed “Mr. Triple-Double,” who led the team with 20 points, five rebounds and seven assists without a turnover. “UConn’s changed my life for the better. I love Connecticut.”

Five years after coming out of high school with zero stars attached to his recruiting profile, Newton established his case next to Kemba Walker and Shabazz Napier as one of the best UConn guards of all time. He shut down the criticism that he wasn’t a “true point guard” and wouldn’t be a great fit with the Huskies. Now he’s a two-time national champion, an All-American, a Big East regular-season and tournament champion, with a school-record four triple-doubles – he’s won it all.

Everything Hurley said when he convinced Newton to come to Connecticut, and then when he did it again after Newton tested pro waters last summer, has rung true.

“Still to this day. He told me (if) I come here I’m gonna end up in the draft conversation and win a national championship, and then when I came back he said I was gonna up my numbers and get even more in the NBA Draft conversation. So you know, back-to-back national championships, playing well, the accomplishments that I’ve had here, I can’t thank him enough for that,” Newton said.

“Last year I didn’t really have a big scoring role and a ball-handling role, but it wasn’t deserved. (Jordan) Hawkins and Adama (Sanogo), they deserved that so that’s what they got last year and coach told me this year if I come back, it’ll be my time. So he told me the truth on that and it worked out well.”

Starting in 78 of his 79 games with the Huskies, Newton averaged 10.1 points last year. Embracing his larger role, he finished this season averaging a team-best 15.1 points and 6.2 assists per game, his 6.6 rebounds were second just behind star center Donovan Clingan.

NBA Draft predictors had Newton going somewhere late in the second round, but his stock will likely take a bounce after his tournament performance.

He had 11 points in the first half on Monday and nine points, four rebounds and five assists in the second, including a pair of alley-oop tosses to Samson Johnson and a layup around the towering Zach Edey, after which he gestured to the 7-foot-4 two-time national player of the year that he was too small.

His calm, reserved personality – which, in games, can bring out a subtle antagonist – found a balance with Hurley’s fiery sideline demeanor in their second season together after some growing pains last year. Hurley and the staff has acknowledged how much his presence taught them about different character traits, how they can all fit together to form a perfect locker room.

“I feel like I’m a more calm person now. All of that yelling and stuff, it just makes you a calm guy, well just me personally,” Newton said. “I know a lot more about life and personality since I’ve been here in Storrs. There will never be a brotherhood and a team that cares about you as much as UConn does and UConn Nation, wherever I go,” he said. “This is the best basketball and the most loved basketball I’ve ever felt in my life.”
