I write to you today in order to urge you to do more about the rising problem of childhood obesity. Until now, Australia has completely underestimated the role and scale at which obesity is at work in our country, not only with our adults, but also, and especially, with our children. From 1985 to 1995, we witnessed a large increase in the number of obese 5-6 year olds alone, from boys jumping from 10.7% to 20.5% and girls from 11.8% to 21.1%. Between 1995 and 2007-8 there was only a slight increase from 21% to 22%. In 2011-12 the number was 26%. Many statistics show that from 1996 onward, the childhood obesity rates in 5-6 year olds have plateaued. However, this does not mean Australia is doing enough. He looked back up at the ad, and met the stare of the children displayed on the billboard. The shame flooded out, quickly replaced by a sense of defiant determination. Tommy decided he did not want to be a fat kid any longer. This moment, though he did not know it at the time, would change his entire life. In preparation for the community presentation, we brainstorm our ideas to answer questions who and where is our target population? With our instructor approval, we are given the privilege to work with primary school children at Roosevelt Elementary School. What is the ongoing problem and what topic we need to present to bring awareness, health promotion, information and education to this particular population? Unanimously we agreed that children obesity has been a continuous and increasing problem in our schools in Scottsbluff and a growing concern for this nation and its future due to the increase of unhealthy foods consumed by our school children, such as foods that are low in fiber, high fat, high sugar and sodium which contributed to unnecessary weight gain and children obesity. As student nurses, we agreed that in line with the goal of Healthy People 2020 goal to promote and advocate healthy eating by increasing intake of fruit and vegetables in our school children diet by doing so, we decided to present “Healthy Food Choices.” It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that the public should consume adequate amounts of dietary fiber from a variety of plant foods. Dietary fiber is defined by the Institute of Medicine Food Nutrition Board as "non-digestible carbohydrates and lignin that are intrinsic and intact in plants." Populations that consume more dietary fiber have less chronic disease. Higher intakes of dietary fiber reduce the risk of developing several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers, and have been associated with lower body weights.
