Dr. Darnell Horton

What I understand about being an administrator is what I learned from Concordia. There are still things that I’m learning and growing in, but Concordia taught me how to ask the right type of questions, how to re-examine what I’m doing, and how to improve my work.

EdD students spend the first two years of the program completing practical coursework and the final year working on a CRIP project or dissertation.

The program begins with the first residency session on the Concordia University Texas campus in Austin, Texas. Students complete a one-week orientation on campus that includes course activities (8 a.m.–5 p.m.) that are an integral part of their 8-week EDU 6310 Christian Ethics course.

The second residency session occurs during the following summer, at which time students return to campus for a week to complete additional course activities in a hands-on manner for another 8-week core course (8 a.m.–5 p.m.). After taking and passing the qualifying exam at the end of the first year, students are formally entered into candidacy for the Doctor of Education and complete 24 credit hours of specialization courses.

The foundational coursework is completed online, aside from the two required weeklong residencies.

During the third year, students shift their focus to the required practicum (six credit hours) and their CRIP project or dissertation (nine credit hours). Students can complete the entire program in just over three years following this plan.

Students choose to complete either the CRIP project or a doctoral dissertation.

The CRIP is an alternative to the theoretical doctoral dissertation. This option allows students more flexibility to identify research, curriculum, or leadership initiative needs within their school districts or organizations and develop research-based solutions and evaluations. The creative aspect of this option provides a more accommodating modality for student research while upholding the expectations of a doctoral program.

The CRIP may appeal to students looking to become active problem-solvers within their districts, impress district leadership with research-based solutions, and become valued contributors within their current environments.

The theoretical dissertation is also an option. A dissertation focuses on evaluating or constructing theory based on research methods focused on this end. Dissertations use the standard five-chapter format allowing students to develop more generalizable conclusions and recommendations.

The dissertation may appeal to students looking to excel in careers within higher education or the educational research community.

Dissertation Handbook (PDF)

Students in both specializations have the choice of completing either a CRIP project or a dissertation throughout the third year of the EdD program.

Before students start their dissertation (3rd year of the program) a committee will be assigned to them. The committee chair is assigned during the Spring of year 2 and the other two committee members are assigned before they start dissertation coursework in the Fall of their 3rd year.

Frequently Asked Questions

An EdD will allow you to gain advanced knowledge and skills related to the field of education. Individuals who want to demonstrate their dedication to the field and their pursuit of understanding will benefit from earning an EdD. The passion to optimize student performance drives individuals to further their education to further their abilities.

Many school districts (primarily mid-size to larger) require their superintendents and executive team (e.g., regional superintendents, curriculum director, finance director, etc.) to possess a terminal degree and often seek those individuals who have completed their Superintendent Certification.

Additionally, an EdD will help you stand out in the marketplace, giving you access to opportunities for advancement and larger salaries that would otherwise be unavailable.

By further developing your instructional knowledge and leadership skills, you will be better prepared to empower your students, trainees, and coworkers to succeed.

Concordia's EdD program is designed for busy adults with full schedules. You'll complete most of the coursework online, and the CRIP/dissertation is built into the three-year timeline.

With the Concordia EdD, you can access new advancement opportunities, better pay, and higher leadership roles. Students will also gain skills to better assist students of all backgrounds, lead districts to better educational outcomes, and help learners reach their highest potential.

Educators with an EdD can become school district executives, faculty at the university level, training supervisors in businesses, school-level curriculum leaders, or chief learning officers in corporations.

Dr. Stephanie Hartzell

I adore having the opportunity to assist students in developing research projects that not only help their immediate context, but that may also work to aid students across districts and regions. That is one commonality that I have seen with the CTX EdD students. They all want to make a difference.

Best Online Doctoral Programs in Texas

By N. Susan Emeagwali

Updated on March 5, 2024

Edited by Jennifer Lee • Reviewed by Stephanie DeBord, MA

A doctorate is the pinnacle of educational achievement and can help pave the way for your career success. Online doctoral programs in Texas provide a flexible and affordable way for you to earn this terminal degree. But is an online doctorate for you?

Beyond academia, many careers require a doctorate and quite a few fall in the well-paying STEM sectors. A doctoral degree may also give you employment advantages in careers that don’t require one. It may also help you stay employed during economic downturns.

Education pays, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which highlights a direct link between higher educational attainment and earnings. In 2022, workers with a bachelor’s degree earned $1,432 in average weekly earnings and had a 2.2% unemployment rate. Comparatively, employees with a doctorate earned $2,083 per week and had just a 1% unemployment rate.

Learning online has really taken off in the Lonestar State. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), 54% of college students in Texas were enrolled in distance education in the fall of 2022, about the same as the nationwide rate of 53.3% nationwide.

The key to ensuring you earn a legitimate doctorate is to pursue accredited Ph.D. programs in Texas.

How We Rank Ph.D. Programs

For our directory-style ranking lists, we only consider schools that are accredited and offer academically rigorous, high-quality online doctoral programs, including Ph.D. programs. Schools are listed in alphabetical order. Learn more about our methodology .

What Is the Difference Between a Ph.D. and a Doctorate?

It’s easy to confuse a Ph.D. and professional doctorate, but the credentials do differ. Most doctoral programs require a master’s degree for admission, but the doctor of philosophy , also known as the Ph.D., requires that doctoral candidates develop and test theories, conduct research, and write dissertations that contribute to their field’s body of knowledge. A Ph.D. is more academic than practice-based.

Professional doctorates also require advanced studies and research but focus on the application of knowledge and research in professional settings. These degrees, such as medical doctor (MD), doctor of education (Ed.D.), and doctor of business administration (DBA), develop scholar-practitioners with advanced leadership and managerial skills.

Benefits of an Online Doctoral Program

Earning a doctorate requires a significant investment in time and money. Enter online Ph.D. programs in Texas! You receive the same rigorous education as on-campus peers, but online programs allow you to pursue a doctorate from anywhere on your own schedule.

The virtual classroom facilitates your employment while you save money on relocation, transportation, and other expenses incurred by on-campus students. Some online doctoral programs in Texas may cost less than on-campus degrees, so do your research.

One thing students need to bear in mind is that it takes even more commitment, time-management skills, and discipline to learn online. Hybrid learning gives many students the best of both worlds: on-campus and online learning wrapped in one.

Cost of Online Ph.D. Programs in Texas

The cost of doctoral programs in Texas varies depending on the school, discipline, duration of the program, and mode of delivery. NCES data shows that doctoral students paid an average of $20,555 in tuition and fees in 2020-21. Non-tuition expenses were $20,343 that same year.

How do you pay for your degree ? You can always turn to student loans . Alternatively, Ph.D. students often receive fellowships and other assistance that cover some or all of their tuition and other educational costs.

Why Choose Online Doctoral Programs in Texas?

Getting a doctorate in a state full of employment prospects enhances your odds of landing a great job opportunity. Texas added 369,600 jobs from December 2022 to December 2023, the most in the nation, according to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

TWC’s latest report on Texas growth occupations shows that employment in the professional services industry will continue to grow 26.8% between 2020-2030. Most of the occupations in this group require at least a bachelor’s degree, like lawyers, general and operations managers, and management analysts.

Cost of an Online Doctorate in  Texas vs Nationwide

If you’re considering online doctorate programs in Texas, there’s a pretty good chance that one of the first things that came to your mind was cost. Specifically — how much would a PhD program in Texas cost? Would you save money by enrolling in a Texas university, or would it be better for you to simply choose one of the cheaper programs elsewhere in the United States?

One thing is for certain: earning your PhD online means you can choose a program anywhere in the country (and sometimes even out of the country). But before you decide, let’s take a look at costs.

According to the Education Data Initiative , the average cost of a doctorate degree is $114,300. Another report by the National Center for Education Statistics  states that grad students can spend as much as $19,749 each year on average for their studies.

However, these costs include both in-person and online doctorates. Additionally, your actual costs can depend on a few things — which school you choose, what program you go for, whether you pay for in-state or out-of-state tuition, and so on.

When it comes to Texas online doctorate programs, costs may vary depending on the school, how many credit hours are required for the program, and more.

According to Texas Tech University’s tuition estimator, in-state online tuition will set you back $361 per credit, plus fees. Texas A & M’s cost per credit for a graduate degree is $848.89 for in-state and $1,378.40 for out-of-state — but this doesn’t include the distance learning differential fee and other fees. Abilene Christian University’s online PhD, listed above, comes in at $767  per credit.

Costs in Texas are about average compared to other states. Choosing to earn your PhD here won’t put you at a significant disadvantage in terms of cost, but you may still want to consider other programs and universities nationwide. There are many institutions (such as UMass-Online ) that charge the same fee whether your are in or out-of-state.

Online PhD programs are made to provide flexibility and convenience to support your academic goals, regardless of your circumstances, such as working full-time, raising a family, or living far from school. Just two of the many advantages of earning an online and hybrid PhD in English are as follows:

  • There are many different formats available for online doctorate programs in English, so you can choose the one that best suits your requirements. Certain programs, for instance, don’t require students to log in at a certain time in order to attend class because they are entirely online.
  • Real-time instruction combined with online learning is used in schools to keep pupils motivated and on task. Others host doctorate candidates on campus for specific courses or summer institutes. With so many alternatives at your disposal, you’re sure to find a top-notch program that fits your lifestyle.
  • You can choose a program that fits your academic interests and professional aspirations when pursuing an online and hybrid PhD in English. If you’re fortunate enough to reside close to a college town, your local institution might not offer a PhD program in English or its offerings might be restricted.
  • Although a lot of students relocate to pursue graduate school, not everyone has that opportunity. This implies that you don’t have to leave your home to enrol in a specialized school in order to pursue a PhD in medieval rhetoric or post-colonial theory and critique.

Here is a list of some of the 5 Top Fire Protection Engineering Online Degrees

Is Online PhD Acceptable in India? Indian universities do not provide online PhD programs since the University Grants Commission (UGC) has not sanctioned them. In addition, there are additional options that are appropriate everywhere in the world and are specially made for working professionals.

The UGC has not approved the PhD program, so it is not offered remotely in India. Candidates may enrol in this course normally.

Two Indian accrediting authorities, UGC and AICTE, do not recognise these kinds of online courses. It is therefore best to thoroughly investigate the legitimacy of any course you wish to take. Particularly when it’s an online PhD, the greatest degree you will ever pursue.

HSC’s MHA online program ranked as one of the best in Texas by EduMed.org

December 7, 2023 • News

By Sally Crocker

Mha & Sph Students

Since 2019, EduMed has released annual rankings highlighting the year’s top programs based on a combination of factors, including affordability, accessibility and commitment to student success.

EduMed.org connects students with expert-driven information about education, training and financial aid opportunities in health care and medical support – through the best and most affordable online degree programs in more than 60 medical and health-related fields.

Guidebooks and student-focused resources from EduMed have been utilized by colleges and universities like Harvard, Cornell, Penn State, University of Florida, University of Virginia, University of Arizona, Vanderbilt and others. They have also appeared on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website and various state government websites.

“In today’s fast-paced, multi-task world, flexibility is a must. Online and blended programs make it easier for working adults to get the education they need while balancing a family and a 9-to-5,” EduMed noted in its 2023-24 academic year rankings.

HSC’s Master of Health Administration program is designed to help students grow as leaders affecting meaningful change to impact health systems and outcomes, and to advance the health of communities. Created for working professionals, HSC’s MHA online program helps students advance their training while boosting their career trajectory. This part-time, online option allows students with at least two years of health care experience to balance education, career and life’s demands.

“The health care industry is thriving, both in Texas and throughout the nation, and it’s expected to stay that way for the foreseeable future. So if you’ve ever considered a career in health care leadership, now is the time to make your move by earning your master’s degree in healthcare administration. An MHA is one of the most popular and highly regarded paths to qualify for advanced managerial roles in the medical field, and many accredited Texas colleges offer this graduate degree. This guide spotlights today’s best on-campus and online MHA programs in Texas to help (students) find a high quality, affordable program (they) can feel confident about,” EduMed noted.

100% of HSC’s MHA students are employed or continue their education in the field following graduation. HSC graduates excel in various professional roles that include administrative fellow, project manager, implementation lead, consultant, operations coordinator, analyst (quality, financial, other) and more.

“Given that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 28% growth rate in health care leadership roles by the year 2031, new opportunities will abound. Health professionals can gain extra leverage to further their career with the training and experience that our MHA provides,” said Dr. Charles Taylor, HSC provost and executive vice president.

HSC’s MHA program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education ( CAHME ). HSC offers private university class sizes at a public university tuition rate and is the most affordable CAHME-accredited institution in Texas.

“We are pleased to be selected by EduMed as one of the top online MHA programs in Texas, and this ranking reaffirms our mission as a socially accountable, community-centered and globally relevant College of Public Health dedicated to the prevention of disease and harm, elimination of health disparities and the promotion of health and equity at home and around the world,” said Dr. Shafik Dharamsi, CPH Dean.

“We are focused on transforming lives and communities through health care leadership, education and scholarship, and our online MHA program is one of the ways we help students prepare to lead the public health and health care workforce of the future.”

In addition to HSC’s curriculum, the College of Public Health places a strong emphasis on providing students with real-world learning opportunities and practice experience within health organizations and related agencies, Dr. Dharamsi noted.
