  • And an informative-explanatory (inform + explain) header offers treatment or analysis of existing data, facts, practices, etc.
  • Persuasive essay questions require you to take up a position on an issue and then persuade or convince the reader about your viewpoint based upon evidence. These can come in the form of anecdotes, facts, statistics etcetera
  • Expository Essays are different from other types of essays in that they don’t require any persuasion but instead simply look for evidence supporting or disproving what you have been told/asked about.

Importance of MUET essay

You will be required to take the MUET test if you are planning on pursuing your university degree at local public university.

However, note that this requirement is not compulsory for those who wish to pursue their education outside of these institutions and choose instead to study at private schools or international ones (MUET tests are only necessary when applying for scholarships).

Remember also, that different universities may have different English proficiency requirements so make sure you check what they need before sending off an application.

The grading system for MUET

When students get their MUET result, they’ll be able to see the mark for each paper and then an overall score. MUET Essay

The maximum number of marks you can obtain for Task 1 is 30 marks . Your essay should be in letter or email format - follow the rubric requirements. There is no specific format for the essay, but here is a guideline for you to write a letter or an email.

  • Who sent the email/letter?
  • Who is the email/letter receiver ?
  • What is the email/letter about ?

You may want to look out for the assessment MUET paper with the latest 2021 format available on the internet for your reference.

Now let’s move on to Task 2 for the MUET writing paper.

Task 2 - Non-formatted essay

In Task 2 of the MUET writing paper, you will be provided with a textual stimulus . There will be a few number of statements that determine the content that you should write in your essay.

Some of the points will be an idea or problem that you have to respond to or the writing genre that you are expected to write. The type of writing that you may be required to write are:

Discursive Writing

Discursive writing requires you to analyze and investigate the given topic . It involves an intense discussion where you must provide a strong and neutral evaluation of a topic. You should include useful facts and objective information to make your essay stand out.

To write a discursive essay, you can start by introducing the topic using attention grabber - stating a fact, asking a question or a relatable quote.

In the main body, specify your points and back them up with valid reasons, pieces of evidence or examples. Be sure to write one point in one paragraph. Avoid mixing your points in a big chunk of paragraphs.

Finally, in the conclusion part, summarize your points in a short paragraph. Try to create a connection between the introduction and the conclusion.

MUET Essay

Argumentative Writing

Argumentative writing is associated with persuasion. You have to persuade readers to understand and support your point of view about a certain topic. This is of course by stating relevant reasoning and providing credible evidence to back your standpoint.

Writing an argumentative essay is quite tricky. You may want to try these approaches when writing an argumentative essay:

  • Start by making a claim in the introduction paragraph . Capture the reader’s interest by providing the background information of the topics and present your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be one sentence of a short summary of your main point.
  • Write 2 to 3 paragraphs to explain why you stand with your points. Influence your readers to agree with your viewpoint in the main body. The different paragraphs should cover one point each.
  • Use the last paragraph in your essay to reiterate your thesis and write a short conclusion of all your points in the main body paragraphs.

Problem Solution

For a problem-solution essay, you obviously need to propose a solution to overcome a problem .

Describe the problem that you want to solve in the introduction paragraph. Convince your reader why it is important for them to pay attention to the problem and why they need to take any action to resolve it.

Then, start outlining your proposed solution in the main body. Aim to come up with three to four paragraphs to discuss the solution. You can include this reasoning to support your essay:

  • The solution is practical
  • The solution is workable
  • The solution is cost-effective
  • The solution is feasible

Try to keep your conclusion written in one paragraph. Close your essay with a rhetorical question or point out a call to action for your reader to take an action.

These are the three common types of writing that you will be required to write in Part 2. You are advised to spend 50 minutes in this section. The essay should be written at least 250 words in length. The maximum mark for Task 2 is 60 marks .

Remember to include all the notes given in the questions. However, do paraphrase the words. Avoid copying word by word directly from the questions. You can use a synonym or change the order of the sentence around to paraphrase the sentences.

Your marks for each task is based on the task fulfilment, language and organisation .

  • Task fulfilment - whether you answer the given question accordingly.
  • Language and organisation - how you organise your content, present your ideas in your writing, words usages and the elaboration of your points.

To be well prepared for essay writing, you can look out for the MUET marking scheme to get an understanding of how the papers are being marked.

MUET writing preparation

Essay writing might not be easy for some students. If you are one of them, you might want to look for help from an English tutor .

You can look for an English tutor from a reputable online tutoring website such as Superprof . Superprof has a wide selection of tutors that you can choose from. It has more than 16 million tutors for over 1000 subjects on the website.

Online learning

Whether you are preparing for listening, speaking, writing or reading, a tutor is here to help.

To look for your preferred tutor on Superprof, you can use the search engine . It is as easy as choosing a subject and entering your address or your postcode . Once you are done, click on the ‘Find a tutor ’ button.

A list of available tutors for the selected subject and location will appear. You can review and choose your tutor based on the list.

If you have other preferences, you can filter the list based on the rate, distance, response time and education level . Do read the tutors’ profiles properly to make sure they suit your requirements.

Once you find your preferred tutor, click on the ‘Book a class’ button on the top right of his or her profile. Talk to the tutor about your educational background, needs and availability in detail. This information is important for the tutor in order to understand you better and offer you the best assistance.

When both, you and your tutor, agree on everything, you can start scheduling your lessons. Decide the method of learning whether to opt for face-to-face lessons or online classes. Once you decide on everything, you can start with your tutoring session.

share image

We know that you want to do well in the MUET writing test. Achieving your goal of a good result will take time, practice, and attention to detail. You will need to understand what is required when answering the MUET writing test tasks and how best to approach these. We’re here to help with a close look at model answers for the MUET writing test tasks. This will give you a good idea of the standard and level required, as well as some of the techniques you can use.

Let’s start by examining the first task of the MUET writing test .

MUET writing test task one

For task one, you will need to reply to an email. The task should take you 25 minutes to complete and is worth 30 marks, which is 33 per cent of your overall writing test score. You will need to write a response of over 100 words for this question.

Task one question

Your classmate, Armani, was absent from school because he was sick. Read the email from him asking about the school English camp which he missed.

Write a reply of at least 100 words in an appropriate style.

—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From: Armani

Subject: Oh I missed the English camp!

How was the school English camp? I feel very sad that I could not join the camp.

I heard that there were lots of fun things to do at the camp! What was your favourite activity at the camp?

I also heard that campers had to share tents, did you like it?

I heard too that the school is planning another camp soon and I want to join it. Would you like to join me?

Write soon.

—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s useful to break down the email into distinct sections that you will reply to. This can help in the way you develop your answer. In this case, each line of the email requires an appropriate response. For example:

Express your sympathy that Armani was unable to attend the English camp and ask how he is doing.

Describe what activities there were at camp and which you enjoyed the most and why.

Explain whether or not you enjoyed sharing a tent and why this was the case.

Answer Armani on whether you would like to attend an English camp with him

Conclude your email

You can think of the structure as:

Answer one

Answer three

Here is an example of a model answer for task one of the MUET writing test:

From: [Your name]

Subject: We missed you!

Hi Armani,

I do hope that you are feeling better. I really enjoyed that English camp, but I missed having you there.

That’s right, there were some very fun activities at the camp. One of my favourites was when we had to write a short story in English and then read it out to our friends. I got a lot of cheers and everyone said that they enjoyed it.

We did have to share tents which I did not enjoy. Some of the campers in my tent were making a lot of noise and this made it difficult to get any sleep.

The school is planning another camp soon and I would love to join you. We’ll have lots of fun together.

Hope to see you soon.

MUET writing test task two

For the MUET writing test task two, you need to write an essay based on a statement or question that is given to you. The task is marked out of 60, which is 66 per cent of your total MUET test mark. You will need to allocate approximately 50 minutes for the completion of this question. You may be asked to complete a different type and style of essay depending on the question. For example:

Discursive essay

Problem-based essay

Argumentative essay

Remember that getting the tone and style right for this question is important if you want to score top marks. It is a more formal and professional tone than that of task one and requires a minimum of 250 words.

Task two question

You attended a talk by a famous fashion designer, which was recently organised during your school’s Career Week. The following comment was made by the guest speaker:

Fashion defines a person’s character.

Write an essay expressing your view on the statement. Write at least 250 words.

Firstly, you will need to decide if you agree with the statement and why. You will also need to support your view and position. It’s useful when approaching the question to create an outline or plan to help you answer.

Decide on your opinion and perspective

Understand the type of essay you will write, in this case, discursive

Justify this position and why you chose this angle

Let’s turn our attention to a model answer for the question in task two so you can get an idea of what a good answer looks like.

MUET writing test task two model answer

Many people may not realise that fashion no longer defines our true character. Historically, clothing and accessories have been used by people to express elements of their personalities. However, in the current era, fashion has become a tool that serves multiple purposes. I disagree that fashion defines a person’s character and feel that this is an illusion. Fashion is an allusion to a character that may not be part of a person or a tool that serves occupational needs. It cannot express or explain a person’s whole identity.

Firstly, fashion is used by people to create a sense of their character and personality. They wish to convey a certain image, affiliation and identity through the clothes and accessories they choose to wear. These choices can stereotype a person and can be manipulated for the purpose of achieving the desired image. For example, the wearing of black-rimmed spectacles is often used to suggest that a person is intelligent, regardless of if they are or not. Fashion in this case can be compensation for traits people may want to have.

Secondly, fashion is a tool that serves occupational purposes. In this context, it is no longer a form of self-expression but a type of conformity. People in certain work environments are expected to dress in a particular way professionally, which may change according to the industry they work in. For example, in the entertainment sphere, singers will dress up to match the theme of their song or show.  A lawyer would not be able to do the same.  Further, when not at work both singers and lawyers may wear more relaxed and comfortable clothing. Fashion is thus closely aligned with occupation and environment.

Lastly, while it is possible to suggest that fashion allows people to express their personality, this is only a small part or aspect of their character. A person’s full character is unique, multilayered and complex. Fashion is a tool that only allows for a small amount of self-expression. It is not a reflection of who a person truly is. For example, many people may wear the Nike sportswear brand. However, they may not be athletes, play sports, or lead an active lifestyle. Thus, fashion is limited in what it can tell about who a person really is.

In conclusion, I disagree that fashion can define a person’s character as it is a limited and context-specific tool. It can be an allusion to a character trait that is not present in a person and is also related to their occupation in some cases. Fashion cannot reflect a person’s whole character. One should never judge or measure a person by the clothes that they wear.

As you can tell from the MUET writing test task two model answer it’s important to understand tone, structure, opinion, and argument. It’s also useful to work on your vocabulary and pay attention to your grammar. Discursive essay sample question

The term discursive essay could cause a certain level of anxiety for some. This happens when the person does not really know what a discursive essay really is.

However, I believe that all this worry should not be there really. This is because a discursive essay is really like any other essay that you would need to write during your time of study.

Basically, writing a discursive essay is not so hard if you know how. In this blog I’m going to show you a sample question of a discursive essay.

I believe that it is important for you to know what the question is going to be like first to be able to understand what is required of you in the question. You would need to familiarize yourself with the question beforehand.

To achieve this we will go through this question part by part.

muet essay example 2021

The discursive essay

In a discursive essay you will need to present your opinion on the topic given and provide a balanced view of it. Here you will be able to showcase your ability to present ideas and flex your ability to discuss about a topic in a constructive way.

Writing a discursive essay would involve presenting your ideas, describing what you particularly observe that is happening around you and in our society in general with regards to the topic being discussed. You will be giving your opinion from both sides of the arguments and so this means that you would write about both sides of the view.

Time allocated for the question

The MUET writing paper consists of two tasks. They are task 1 and task 2. In task 2 you will have to write an extended writing essay.

The time that you should allocate for writing this essay in task 2 is 50 minutes. The duration of time for the entire MUET writing paper is 75 minutes.

So, you will spend the first 25 minutes of your time, answering task 1. Once you are done with task 1, you are going to straightaway move on to answering task 2.

I would like to advise you to use the first few minutes to prepare for task 2.

Preparing for task 2 involves brainstorming on the content points, thinking of the elaborations and listing examples for you to use in the writing of your essay. There is a lot for you to do here and it should all be done within the first 5 minutes of your time.

Yes it is going to be a little bit of a rush for sure. You would need to think very fast and in a more objective way.

In your mind will be just the topic and thinking about the contents and the support for the contents . Write all that you are thiinking of on paper.

You will do the selection of ideas that you will be using after that.

The situation given

In this essay, it says that you went for a talk. And in this talk, a fresh graduate gave a speech.

During the speech the fresh graduate made a comment which would be the focus of the discursive essay.

In this situation, the person giving the comment was a fresh graduate. It is interesting to see that the person making the comment was a fresh graduate and not someone else like a police officer or a lecturer for instance.

By using the fresh graduate as the person giving the comment it would bring with it some connotations.

This is because just by mentioning a fresh graduate, few things will come up to mind. Among others would be the challenges they would potentially face during a job hunt, being too choosy in looking for a job and also, the current unemployment rate.

So, when you are writing about the topic in your discursive essay later you would need to include and remember these issues mentioned above.

The topic of discussion

In the situation given the fresh graduate made a comment that a person’s career choice should be based on the person’s interest alone.

This comment would mean that when looking for a job the fresh graduates should focus on a particular career choice that they would prefer. This would disregard the other opportunities that may come their way should they not be the types of jobs that they would be interested in.

Let’s now focus on the topic being discussed. When a person would only go for and accept the job that they are interested in, it would result in two things.

The first is the person’s job opportunity distinctly would be narrowed down to a very limited few. The second would cause the person to have to wait perhaps much longer for the type of jobs that they are interested in to come by.

Certainly by only going for jobs that a person is interested in would seem quite idealistic. What’s with the current unemployment rate going on in our country.

The situation with the current pandemic that we are all facing certainly does not help the matter. With more people facing the danger of retrenchment and losing their source of income, only looking for a jobs based on the person’s interests is in fact rather naive.

These would be your opinion about why you feel a person should be open to accepting jobs that may not be of their interest. You feel that the person should practise prudence and accept the jobs that they have succeeded in getting. Perhaps later in the future, when the opportunity arrives for them to move on to another job that they actually love then they could always do just that.

On the other hand saying all that does not mean that you totally disregard the importance of having a career that you are interested in.

This is because you could see clearly from experience and from your observation around you that having the job of your interests would only lead to success.

This would include the success at work and success in life where you will find happiness and job satisfaction from the career that you love.

Consequently having a job that you love would certainly contribute to your overall quality of life.

The content points to use

So these are the items that you would need to think of and talk about in the content points when preparing for your essay.

Write these ideas down in a more constructive way.

Perhaps you can have two points to support and another two points to oppose the topic.

From these four points you will choose only 3 content points that you will be working on and elaborate in your essay.

For a discursive essay you need to first of all mention and discuss content points to support the topic given. Use the two content points you already have for the first two contents- content 1 and content 2 to support the topic here. And in your final content which is content 3, you will switch your view and you will oppose to the topic given.

This is how you would write your content points for a discursive essay.

Fulfilling the task set in task 2

In this question, the task that you will need to fulfill is for you to write an essay expressing your opinion on the statement.

The task clearly states for you to provide your own point of view.

So voicing out the your point of view with regard to the statement made in a clear way is the task that you need to fulfil here in task 2. Your task in not to sway the reader to agree with your point of view. In fact you are simply writing in order to provide the two different arguments of the topic.

You would also need to discuss the current subject matter in an engaging and informative way.

To be engaging is to be able to keep the interest of the readers as they read your essay.

So again, remember that your purpose is not to influence the readers to agree with you but for them to see your point of view and to provoke the readers’ thoughts on that matter. By doing this also you are giving a mature treatment to your essay writing. This shows critical thinking on your part.

As you are writing the discursive essay, bear in mind that you need to write it in a more formal way.

Your writing would involve discussing ideas and evaluating the topic. And to make your arguments clear you would need to add in examples based on your observation around you.

Length of essay

For this essay, you would need to write more than 250 words. Writing a longer essay would provide an in depth review of the subject matter.
