अंत में यह जानना भी अत्यधिक आवश्यक है कि निबंध कितने प्रकार के होते हैं। मोटे तौर निबंध को निम्नलिखित श्रेणियों में रखा जाता है-

वर्णनात्मक निबंध - इस तरह के निबंधों में किसी घटना, वस्तु, स्थान, यात्रा आदि का वर्णन किया जाता है। इसमें त्योहार, यात्रा, आयोजन आदि पर लेखन शामिल है। इनमें घटनाओं का एक क्रम होता है और इस तरह के निबंध लिखने आसान होते हैं।

विचारात्मक निबंध - इस तरह के निबंधों में मनन-चिंतन की अधिक आवश्यकता होती है। अक्सर ये किसी समस्या – सामाजिक, राजनीतिक या व्यक्तिगत- पर लिखे जाते हैं। विज्ञान वरदान या अभिशाप, राष्ट्रीय एकता की समस्या, बेरोजगारी की समस्या आदि ऐसे विषय हो सकते हैं। इन हिंदी निबंधों (hindi nibandh) में विषय के अच्छे-बुरे पहलुओं पर विचार व्यक्त किया जाता है और समस्या को दूर करने के उपाय भी सुझाए जाते हैं।

भावात्मक निबंध - ऐसे निबंध जिनमें भावनाओं को व्यक्त करने की अधिक स्वतंत्रता होती है। इनमें कल्पनाशीलता के लिए अधिक छूट होती है। भाव की प्रधानता के कारण इन निबंधों में लेखक की आत्मीयता झलकती है। मेरा प्रिय मित्र, यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता जैसे विषय इस श्रेणी में रखे जा सकते हैं।

हमारी यह पृथ्वी जिस पर हम सभी निवास करते हैं इसके पर्यावरण के संरक्षण के लिए विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस (World Environment Day) हर साल 5 जून को मनाया जाता है। इसकी शुरुआत 1972 में मानव पर्यावरण पर आयोजित संयुक्त राष्ट्र सम्मलेन के दौरान हुई थी। पहला विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस (Environment Day) 5 जून 1974 को “केवल एक पृथ्वी” (Only One Earth) स्लोगन/थीम के साथ मनाया गया था, जिसमें तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री श्रीमती इंदिरा गाँधी ने भी भाग लिया था। इसी सम्मलेन में संयुक्त राष्ट्र पर्यावरण कार्यक्रम (UNEP) की भी स्थापना की गई थी। इस विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस (World Environment Day) को मनाने का उद्देश्य विश्व के लोगों के भीतर पर्यावरण (Environment) के प्रति जागरूकता लाना और साथ ही प्रकृति के प्रति अपने कर्तव्य का निर्वहन करना भी है। इसी विषय पर विचार करते हुए 19 नवंबर, 1986 को पर्यवरण संरक्षण अधिनियम लागू किया गया तथा 1987 से हर वर्ष पर्यावरण दिवस की मेजबानी करने के लिए अलग-अलग देश को चुना गया।

आज के युग में जब हम अपना अधिकतर समय पढाई पर केंद्रित करने का प्रयास करते नजर आते हैं और साथ ही अपना ज़्यादातर समय ऑनलाइन रह कर व्यतीत करना पसंद करते हैं, ऐसे में हमारे जीवन में खेलों का महत्व कई गुना बढ़ जाता है। खेल हमारे लिए केवल मनोरंजन का साधन ही नहीं, अपितु हमारे सर्वांगीण विकास का एक माध्यम भी है। हमारे जीवन में खेल उतना ही जरूरी है, जितना पढाई करना। आज कल के युग में मानव जीवन में शारीरिक कार्य की तुलना में मानसिक कार्य में बढ़ोतरी हुई है और हमारी जीवन शैली भी बदल गई है, हम रात को देर से सोते हैं और साथ ही सुबह देर से उठते हैं। जाहिर है कि यह दिनचर्या स्वास्थ्य के लिए अच्छी नहीं है और इसके साथ ही कार्य या पढाई की वजह से मानसिक तनाव पहले की तुलना में वृद्धि महसूस की जा सकती है। ऐसी स्थिति में जब हमारे जीवन में शारीरिक परिश्रम अधिक नहीं है, तो हमारे जीवन में खेलो का महत्व बहुत अधिक बढ़ जाता है।

शिक्षक अपने शिष्य के जीवन के साथ साथ उसके चरित्र निर्माण में भी एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते है। कहा जाता है कि सबसे पहली गुरु माँ होती है, जो अपने बच्चों को जीवन प्रदान करने के साथ-साथ जीवन के आधार का ज्ञान भी देती है। इसके बाद अन्य शिक्षकों का स्थान होता है। किसी व्यक्ति के व्यक्तित्व का निर्माण करना बहुत ही बड़ा और कठिन कार्य है। व्यक्ति को शिक्षा प्रदान करने के साथ-साथ उसके चरित्र और व्यक्तित्व का निर्माण करना भी उसी प्रकार का कार्य है, जैसे कोई कुम्हार मिट्टी से बर्तन बनाने का कार्य करता है। इसी प्रकार शिक्षक अपने छात्रों को शिक्षा प्रदान करने के साथ साथ उसके व्यक्तित्व का निर्माण भी करते हैं।

अंतरराष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस की शुरुआत 1908 में हुई थी, जब न्यूयॉर्क शहर की सड़को पर हजारों महिलाएं घंटों काम के लिए बेहतर वेतन और सम्मान तथा समानता के अधिकार को प्राप्त करने के लिए उतरी थीं। अंतरराष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस को अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर मनाने का प्रस्ताव क्लारा जेटकिन का था जिन्होंने 1910 में यह प्रस्ताव रखा था। पहला अंतरराष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस 1911 में ऑस्ट्रिया, डेनमार्क, जर्मनी और स्विट्ज़रलैंड में मनाया गया था।

A memoir of relationship abuse, Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House is candid and innovative in form. Machado writes about thorny and turbulent subjects with clarity, even wit. While intensely personal, In the Dream House is also one of most insightful pieces of cultural criticism.
Twenty-five years after leaving for Canada, Michael Ondaatje returns to his native Sri Lanka to sort out his family’s past. The result is Running in the Family , the writer’s dazzling attempt to reconstruct fragments of experiences and family legends into a portrait of his parents’ and grandparents’ lives. “The first time I cheated on my husband, my mother had been dead for exactly one week.” So begins Cheryl Strayed’s “ The Love of My Life ,” an essay that the writer eventually expanded into the best-selling memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail .
In “ What We Hunger For ,” Roxane Gay weaves personal experience and a discussion of The Hunger Games into a powerful meditation on strength, trauma, and hope. “What We Hunger For” can also be found in Gay’s essay collection, Bad Feminist .

Clean up your word choice and omit needless words , and check to make sure you haven’t made any of these common writing mistakes . Thank you for this website. It’s very engaging. I have been writing a memoir for over three years, somewhat haphazardly, based on the first half of my life and its encounters with ignorance (religious restrictions, alcohol, and inability to reach out for help). Three cities were involved: Boston as a youngster growing up and going to college, then Washington DC and Chicago North Shore as a married woman with four children. I am satisfied with some chapters and not with others. Editing exposes repetition and hopefully discards boring excess. Reaching for something better is always worth the struggle. I am 90, continue to be a recital pianist, a portrait painter, and a writer. Hubby has been dead for nine years. Together we lept a few of life’s chasms and I still miss him. But so far, my occupations keep my brain working fairly well, especially since I don’t smoke or drink (for the past 50 years).

I am a survivor of gun violence, having witnessed my adult son being shot 13 times by police in 2014. I have struggled with writing my memoir because I have a grandson who was 18-months old at the time of the tragedy and was also present, as was his biological mother and other family members. We all struggle with PTSD because of this atrocity. My grandson’s biological mother was instrumental in what happened and I am struggling to write the story in such a way as to not cast blame – thus my dilemma in writing the memoir. My grandson was later adopted by a local family in an open adoption and is still a big part of my life. I have considered just writing it and waiting until my grandson is old enough to understand all the family dynamics that were involved. I was thrilled to find this material on How to Write A Memoir. When I briefly told someone about some of my past experiences and how I came to the United States in the company of my younger brother in a program with a curious name, I was encouraged by that person and others to write my life history.

Based on the name of that curious program through which our parents sent us to the United States so we could leave the place of our birth, and be away from potentially difficult situations in our country.

As I began to write my history I took as much time as possible to describe all the different steps that were taken. Wow! This is such an informative post packed with tangible guidance. I poured my heart into a book. I’ve been a professional creative for years to include as a writer, mainly in the ad game and content. No editor. I wasn’t trying to make it as an author. I am a member of the “Reprobates”, a group of seven retired Royal Air Force pilots and navigators which has stayed in intermittent touch since we first met in Germany in 1969. Four of the group (all of whom are in their late seventies or early eighties) play golf together quite frequently, and we all gather for reunions once or twice a year. About a year ago, one of the Reprobates suggested posterity might be glad to hear the stories told at these gatherings, and there have since been two professionally conducted recording sessions, one in London, and one in Tarifa, Spain. मेरे पास बचपन की कुछ यादें भी हैं जिन्हें मैं कभी नहीं भूल सकता। आज मैं यहां ऐसी ही कुछ यादों के बारे में बात करूंगा।

बचपन की यादों का महत्व:

क्या कुछ लोग सोचते हैं कि बचपन की यादें वास्तव में महत्वपूर्ण हैं? मुझे लगता है ऐसा है। क्‍योंकि ये यादें हमारे व्‍यक्तित्‍व और जीवनशैली पर बहुत बड़ा प्रभाव डालती हैं। यह हमें वह व्यक्ति बनने में मदद करता है जो हम बनना चाहते हैं।

हमें कभी भी अपनी पिछली यादों को नजरअंदाज नहीं करना चाहिए। ये हमारे जीवन के बड़े सबक हैं। इसलिए मुझे लगता है कि इसका हमारे जीवन में बहुत महत्व है।

मेरी कुछ अद्भुत यादें हैं। उनमें से ज्यादातर मेरे परिवार, मेरे माता-पिता, मेरे भाई-बहन और मेरी दादी के साथ हैं। मेरे तीन भाई-बहन हैं और वे मेरे दिल के बहुत करीब हैं। हमने हमेशा साथ में अच्छा समय बिताया। मेरा पूरा बचपन दिल्ली के एक मोहल्ले में बीता है।

वहां मेरे बहुत सारे दोस्त थे। मैं अभी भी उनमें से कुछ के साथ जुड़ा हुआ हूं। हमने वास्तव में एक साथ अच्छा समय बिताया। मुझे दोपहर में क्रिकेट खेलना बहुत पसंद था। उनके साथ खेलने की मेरी काफी अच्छी यादें हैं। मुझे स्कूल का पहला दिन याद है।

जब गेंद तालाब में गई तो किसी ने जाकर उसे उठा लिया। एक लड़के ने सोचा कि शायद मुझे तैरना आता है और उसने मुझे तालाब में धकेल दिया। जब मैं पानी से बाहर निकलने की कोशिश कर रहा था तो क्या वह हंस नहीं रहा था और सोच रहा था कि मैं मजाक कर रहा हूं।

डायरी लिखने का उद्देश्य .

मानव के समस्त भावों मानसिक उद्वेगों,अनुभूति विचारों को अभिव्यक्त करने में साहित्य का सर्वोच्च स्थान है। समीक्षकों ने डायरी को साहित्य की कोटि में इसलिए रखा है क्योंकि वह किसी महत्वपूर्ण व्यक्ति के व्यक्तित्व का उदघाटन करती है या मानव समाज के विभिन्न पक्षों का सूक्ष्म और जीवंत चित्र उपस्थित करती हैं। डायरी लेखक अपनी रूचि और आवश्यकतानुसार राजनीतिक, सामाजिक, सांस्कृतिक, धार्मिक, साहित्यिक विभिन्न पक्षों के साथ निजी अनुभूतियों का चित्रण कर सकता है।

एक साहित्यिक की डायरी

भारत के प्रसिद्धि प्रगतिशील कवि और हिन्दी साहित्य की स्वातंत्र्योत्तर प्रगतिशील काव्यधारा के शीर्ष व्यक्तित्व गजानन माधव 'मुक्तिबोध' द्वारा लिखी गई पुस्तक है। यह पुस्तक 'भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ' द्वारा 25 जून, सन 2000 में प्रकाशित की गई थी। हिन्दी साहित्य में सर्वाधिक चर्चा के केन्द्र में रहने वाले मुक्तिबोध एक कहानीकार होने के साथ ही समीक्षक भी थे।

पुस्तक अंश

‘डायरी’ शब्द एक भ्रम पैदा करता है और यह गलतफहमी भी हो सकती है कि मुक्तिबोध की ये डायरियाँ भी तिथिवार डायरियाँ होंगी। लेकिन वास्तविकता यह है कि ‘एक साहित्यिक की डायरी’ केवल उस स्तम्भ का नाम था, जिसके अन्तर्गत समय-समय पर मुक्तिबोध को अनेक प्रश्नों पर विचार करने की छूट न केवल सम्पादन की ओर से बल्कि स्वयं अपनी ओर से भी होती थी।

‘वसुधा’ के पहले नागपुर के ‘नया खून’ साप्ताहिक में वह ‘एक साहित्यिक की डायरी’ स्तम्भ के अन्तर्गत कभी अर्द्ध-साहित्यिक और कभी गैर-साहित्यिक विषयों पर छोटी-छोटी टिप्पणियाँ लिखा करते थे, जो एक अलग संकलन के रूप में प्रकाशन के लिए प्रस्तावित हैं। डायरी में केवल ‘वसुधा’ में प्रकाशित किस्तों-जो स्वयं में स्वतन्त्र निबन्ध हैं-को शामिल करने का उनका उद्देश्य ही यही था कि वे न तो सामयिक टिप्पणियों को साहित्य मानते थे और न साहित्य को सामयिक टिप्पणी वस्तुतः जैसा कि श्री ‘अदीब’ ने लिखा है, मुक्तिबोध की डायरी उस सत्य की खोज है, जिसके आलोक में कवि अपने अनुभव को सार्वभौमिक अर्थ दे देता है।

मुक्तिबोध की मृत्यु के पहले श्रीकांत वर्मा ने उनकी केवल 'एक साहित्यिक की डायरी' प्रकाशि‍त की थी, जिसका दूसरा संस्करण 'भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ' से उनकी मृत्यु के दो महीने बाद प्रकाशि‍त हुआ।

माँ वह है जो हमें जन्म देती है, यहीं कारण है कि संसार में हर जीवनदायनी वस्तु को माँ की संज्ञा दी गयी है। यदि हमारे जीवन के शुरुआती समय में कोई हमारे सुख-दुख में हमारा साथी होता है तो वह हमारी माँ ही होती है। माँ हमें कभी इस बात का एहसास नही होने देती की संकट के घड़ी में हम अकेले हैं। इसी कारणवश हमारे जीवन में माँ के महत्व को नकारा नही जा सकता है।

मेरे जीवन में मेरी माँ का महत्व

माँ एक ऐसा शब्द है, जिसके महत्व के विषय में जितनी भी बात की जाये कम ही है। हम माँ के बिना अपने जीवन की कल्पना भी नही कर सकते हैं। माँ के महानता का अंदाजा इसी बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि इंसान भगवान का नाम लेना भले ही भूल जाये लेकिन माँ का नाम लेना नही भूलता है। माँ को प्रेम व करुणा का प्रतीक माना गया है। एक माँ दुनियां भर के कष्ट सहकर भी अपने संतान को अच्छी से अच्छी सुख-सुविधाएं देना चाहती है।

एक माँ अपने बच्चों से बहुत ही ज्यादे प्रेम करती है, वह भले ही खुद भुखी सो जाये लेकिन अपने बच्चों को खाना खिलाना नही भूलती है। हर व्यक्ति के जीवन में उसकी माँ एक शिक्षक से लेकर पालनकर्ता जैसी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिकाएं निभाती है। इसलिए हमें अपनी माँ का सदैव सम्मान करना चाहिए क्योंकि ईश्वर हमसे भले ही नाराज हो जाये लेकिन एक माँ अपने बच्चों से कभी नाराज नही हो सकती है। यही कारण है कि हमारे जीवन में माँ के इस रिश्ते को अन्य सभी रिश्तों से इतना ज्यादे महत्वपूर्ण माना गया है।

जब भी मैं किसी कार्य में असफल हुआ तो मेरी माँ ने मुझमें और भी विश्वास जगाया। जब भी मैं किसी समस्या में था तो मेरी माँ ने हरसंभव प्रयास किया कि मैं उस बाधा को पार कर लूं। भले ही मेरी कोई बहुत पढ़ी-लिखी महिला ना हो लेकिन उसके जिदंगी के तुजर्बे से प्राप्त ज्ञान की बातें किसी इंजीनियर या प्रोफेसर के तर्कों से कम नही है। आज भी वह मुझे कुछ ना कुछ जरुर सिखा पाती है क्योंकि मैं कितना ही बड़ा क्यों ना हो जाऊ लेकिन जिंदगी के अनुभव में हमेशा उससे छोटा ही रहूंगा। वास्तव में मेरी माँ मेरी सबसे अच्छी शिक्षक है और उसके द्वारा दी जाने वाली हर एक शिक्षा अनमोल है।

उन्होंने मुझे बस प्रारंभिक शिक्षा ही नही दी बल्कि की जीवन जीने का तरीका भी सीखाया है, मुझे इस बात की शिक्षा दी है कि समाज में किस तरह से व्यवहार करना चाहिए। वह मेरे दुख में मेरे साथ रही हैं, मेरे तकलीफों में मे मेरी शक्ति बनी है और वह मेरे हर सफलता का आधारस्तंभ भी है। यहीं कारण है कि मैं उन्हें अपना सबसे अच्छा मित्र मानता हूं।

कई लोगों के जीवन में पौराणिक या ऐतिहासिक व्यक्ति उनके प्रेरणा स्त्रोत होते हैं, तो कई लोगों के जीवन में प्रसिद्ध व्यक्ति या फिर उनके माता-पिता उनके प्रेरणा स्त्रोत होते है। मायने यह नही रखता कि आपका प्रेरणा स्त्रोत कौन है, मायने यह रखता है कि आप अपने लक्ष्य को प्राप्त करने में उसके विचारों और तरीकों से कितने ज्यादे प्रभावित है।

आज तक के अपने जीवन में मैने अपने माँ को कभी विपत्तियों के आगे घुटने टेकते हुए नही देखा है। मेरे सुख-सुविधाओं के लिए उन्होंने कभी भी अपने दुखों की परवाह नही की वास्तव में वह त्याग और प्रेम की प्रतिमूर्ति है, मेरे सफलताओं के लिये उन्होंने ना जाने कितने कष्ट सहें है। उनका व्यवहार, रहन-सहन तथा इच्छाशक्ति मेरे जीवन की सबसे बड़ी प्रेरणा है।

मेरी माँ मेरी प्रेरणा स्त्रोत इसलिए भी है क्योंकि ज्यादेतर लोग कार्य करते हैं कि उन्हें प्रसिद्धि प्राप्त हो और वह समाज में नाम कमा सके लेकिन एक माँ कभी भी यह नही सोचती है वह तो बस अपने बच्चों को उनके जीवन में सफल बनाना चाहती है। वह जो भी कार्य करती है, उसमें उसका अपना कोई स्वार्थ नही होता है। यही कारण है कि मैं अपने माँ को पृथ्वी पर ईश्वर का एक रुप मानता हूं।

वैसे तो सबके जीवन में उसका कोई ना कोई प्रेरणा स्त्रोत अवश्य ही होता है, जिसके कार्यों या बातों द्वारा वह प्रभावित होता है लेकिन मेरे जीवन में यदि कोई मेरा प्रेरणा स्त्रोत रहा है तो वह मेरा माँ है। उनके मेहनत, निस्वार्थ भाव, साहस तथा त्याग ने मुझे सदैव ही प्रेरित करने का कार्य किया है। उन्होंने मुझे समाजिक व्यवहार से लेकर ईमानदारी तथा मेहनत जैसी महत्वपूर्ण शिक्षाएं दी हैं। यही कारण है कि मैं उन्हें अपना सबसे अच्छा शिक्षत, मित्र तथा प्रेरक मानता हूं।

Tajja Isen Is Wary of the ‘Personal Essay Economy’

Here’s what you need to know: Tajja Isen’s lore runs deep. As coworkers at a now defunct digital magazine (RIP Catapult), I found myself constantly awed by her editorial vision and subtle humor, but it was her Wikipedia that really began to reveal the depth of her main character-ness. But even that hardly manages to scratch the surface. In her debut essay collection, Some of My Best Friends , Tajja Isen invites us into the complexities and contradictions of that expansive personal history.

Weaving together cultural criticism with personal narrative, she examines the limitations of progressivism, shifting between registers both humorous and heartbreaking. I spoke with Isen about the evolution of the personal essay economy, the horrors of writing about a politicized body , and rejecting representation as our ultimate end goal.

Leah Johnson: You talk a lot about the evolution and expectations of the personal essay form. I think you use the phrase, “It feels like pressing on a bruise too hard.” How did you decide how much pressing on a bruise you wanted to do and how much you wanted to keep to yourself?

Tajja Isen: Interestingly, I filed my first draft to my editors, and they were like, “Great. This is sharp, this is smart. But where are you in this book?” And I think I had pitched it much more as a personal critical essay collection, and then I sent them a critical essay collection. So a lot of the work of revision was figuring out what I was comfortable with and where I saw myself sitting into this book. And I feel like I was trying to develop a new vocabulary for talking about myself and my experiences. Because I do think a lot of what I see writers push to do in the personal essay economy, especially racialized writers, as I talk about in the book, does feel too bruise-like. And I didn’t want to feel trapped by any of those familiar scripts.

I know that no matter what I do, no matter how much I withhold or how carefully I fashion the version of myself that I want to appear on a page, somebody’s going to read this book and say, “Tajja Isen writes about how hard it is to be Black.” I don’t have to do anything. I just put the book out and somebody’s going to say that. And somebody has indeed already said that.

And so, it’s almost like in crafting the version of myself that would appear on the page, who I do think of very much as a character, as a fashioned self. I was probably running against that. And not wanting to say anything that could possibly be construed as lending weight to that hypothesis. Which sounds like I was way up in my head and not having a good time, which wasn’t the case. I had a great time writing this book. I made myself laugh. Anytime I could do that, I was like, “All right, the writing is going well.”

LJ: In one of your essays, you talk about the horror of writing about a politicized body. Can you walk me through overcoming that or powering through that in your years since becoming a personal essayist?

TI: I knew that the ongoing refusal to allow any personal traces of myself in the work was unsustainable. So, to see the xoJane model of personal writing was like, “Oh, what if I try that? Then it’ll feel authentic and more like me.” And at first it was so beguiling. It felt like, “Okay, I can do this. It’s not that hard for me to do this. Editors like it if I do this.” And then I took it too far. Then I was reading back some of the published pieces, and I was like, “Well, this is just an inverted problem. This does not feel true. This does not feel authentic. This does not feel fair to me either.” Like, I just replaced one set of very expected and acceptable and conventionally agreed upon set of poses with another.

So, I walked it back. And sometimes I feel like it’s an ongoing negotiation. Like I always have to check in with myself to see what I’m comfortable sharing, regardless of the form. I feel like I often have to ask myself: How am I coming across? And is this what I want to be putting out there?

LJ: The book opens with an essay about animation’s sort of messy push in the past few years to hire actors that reflect the race of the characters they’re playing as a way of course correcting. It often feels this way in publishing too, this sort of performative attempt to “get things right” to the exclusion of everything else. How are you navigating both of these fields in terms of your creative practice? Is this handwringing about getting things right all the time changing your approach to writing or to acting?

TI: I think in both cases, my response is to just clock it, roll my eyes, and move on. I can’t let it influence the work. Certainly in voice acting it’s easier to separate myself off from it because the process is so siloed. No matter what, handwringing conversations are going on as part of the media cycle, but at the end of the day, it’s just me and the mic and the booth. So, I can roll my eyes at the character description or whatever, but it’s easier, I guess, to just treat it as a job. I don’t have the same stake in it as I do with my own work and with my own writing.

With writing, it is harder to tune out the noise. Even as I was writing the book, the conversations around a lot of these subjects are changing so rapidly. And I was like, is this even something that people are going to want nuanced longform opinions on? Or has the subject of representation of the personal essay economy just gotten to a point where people just want to hear, “Yes, diversity good.” But at the same time, I can’t let it. I keep abreast of it. It’s important because it’s part of our jobs as editors. And I also don’t want the writers I work with to embarrass themselves. That means asking them, “Do you really want to say that? Have you thought about the way this might be construed, and how that’s contrary to what I’m reading your intentions to be?”

LJ: I think sometimes it comes down to this doesn’t just exist on the page, this also has to live in the world. And so, it’s a matter of, how do I want my work to exist in the world and how do I want to exist alongside it?

TI: That’s why I was so nervous for the Time piece to come out , because I feel like it does present the book in a certain way to have the first piece of it appear under a headline like “America Doesn’t Know How to Read the Work of Black Writers.” It was like, “Okay, here we go.”

LJ: I thought that was really interesting, especially after I read it. I was like, “Well, I don’t even know how well that title characterizes what it is Tajja’s trying to accomplish here.” But it’s good for clicks—at the end of the day, we need the clicks.

Of course, an early, early, early version of that essay appeared in Electric Lit in 2017 as “Tiny White People.” And I wonder how have you seen the conversation around literary representation changed since you wrote the original version of that essay to now that you’re putting this version of it out?

TI: When I published the original version of that piece in 2017, it was in the midst of an explosion of pieces that were making a similar argument. And I think at the time, we hadn’t seen that argument in a lot of places, so it seemed very fresh. It was really thrilling to be a part of that sea change and feel like, “Oh, I’m a part of wave of writers and thinkers happening on the internet.” At its best, that’s what the personal essay economy does. But I don’t think that argument is especially original anymore.

I do think we have collectively moved past the idea that representation as an uncritical good and that it should be the political end goal. And so, one of my big worries was putting the excerpt out as the book’s first foot forward. I didn’t want it to be perceived as stopping exactly where the first one did. Because I think that argument by now is the kind of problem that makes white people very comfortable. It’s like, “Oh, yes, of course representation is important because…” Or “Of course people need to see themselves.” And that’s not enough. My thinking has changed, and I wanted the essay to reflect those shifts, both personal and cultural, and not seem like it’s in any way stuck in five years ago. It’s hard.

Also, in the original version of “Tiny White People,” I think I was very hard on my younger self, more so than I needed to be. And that did paint the issue as more binary than it actually is, which is like white male canon bad, representation good. And that’s the argument I’m referring to when I say that it has turned into something that’s very comfortable for white people. It’s easy to hit retweet on that take without reading the piece piece even, and without considering the ways in which representation can also be a form of lip service, can also point to the progress where real progress has not been made.

LJ: I’ve been thinking a lot about when The Slap happened at the Oscars, there was the initial shock, and then immediately later, the next beat was, “Oh man, we’re going to get think-pieced out this week. They’re going to think-piece us straight to hell.” And I was just like, “Wow. Oh, we are in a rut. We are really stuck somewhere.” I wonder, for you, if it seems like we’re all writing about the same things all the time then is there a such thing as too much?

TI: I think we have reached a saturation point. When I saw that move happening on Twitter, I was like, “This is the darkest timeline. There’s no way out of this.” I think originality of argument and just being able to articulate what’s distinctive about one’s own contribution is a very neglected part of pitching and writing. I think that’s because of the way publishing works. It’s like comp titles. We know what worked before and that’ll work again. And I think to a certain extent, if you’re a writer trying to make your living in that economy, no judgment from me if you want to just get your money and do the thing that worked before, because people want to pay big coins for that. But do I think that has an adverse effect for what writers feel able and free and comfortable to do and express? Absolutely.

Joyful Recollections of Trauma

Paul Scheer knew he had a lot of funny childhood stories — the comedian (“The League,” “Black Monday”) had been regaling audiences with them for years on the podcast “How Did This Get Made?” with his wife, June Diane Raphael, and friend Jason Mantzoukas. But as a memoir reader, he understood that a collection of amusing anecdotes did not make a book.

To create something worth reading, he’d “have to go deeper and tell the stories I’ve never really told,” Scheer, 48, said in a recent video interview from his Los Angeles home. Those stories centered largely around the abuse he (and his mother) suffered at the hands of his stepfather and the fear and shame it caused, especially when his mom and dad didn’t step in to save him. Still, Scheer was adamant that his book not be therapy. “I’ve read books that almost feel too private. I didn’t want that — I’d done that work before I started writing.”

“Joyful Recollections of Trauma,” Scheer’s memoir-in-essays, blends the horrifying and the self-deprecatingly funny, often within the same chapter, sometimes within the same sentence. “Writing this was a process of refining and discovering what the book wanted to be,” Scheer said.

How did writing the book change your understanding of your past and of yourself?

These are all things that I knew about myself, but wrestling with details gave me a good point of view and actually helped me bring certain things into therapy. I’m not surprised at the stories, obviously, but I am surprised that some of the connections I didn’t see until they were down on the page. There were things I’d taken for granted and never really examined. As a kid, you don’t know any different — I grew up in this situation that was violent and scary, but it was my life so it was also so normal.

The thing I was most surprised at was the anger that I felt at my parents. I love my parents and have a great relationship with them and they’ve supported me in countless ways, but I had made excuses for them or just said, “It’s fine.” But as a parent myself, in telling those stories, I thought, “If I was in their shoes, I would do something.” So this book made me look at things differently. I think it gave me a better relationship with my kids. I think it also gave me a better relationship with my parents.

Did you temper what you wrote about your parents and how you felt?

It was something I wrestled with. I don’t think the anger at my parents comes out in the book. I just laid things out without trying to sweeten the edges or making excuses, but this is not a book that I was writing to settle the score. I have a good relationship with my parents. My parents’ friends will read this book, and I wanted to protect my parents from getting slings and arrows from their friends.

Was writing about your stepfather and the abuse cathartic?

I don’t think it was cathartic because I had dealt with it all in therapy and I wasn’t going through that as I was writing it. What it was for me was a release of a burden, a chance for me to tell this story and feel like I had full control of it. What I reclaimed was the power of my voice for my childhood — I’ve been free of those moments already, but now it’s something I don’t have to hide, I can talk about this. Oh, maybe that is cathartic.

Was it difficult to find the right tonal balance?

I thought about it like a conversation. I’m going to tell you these stories. I’m not going to undercut the dark parts, but I also am going to be aware of the valves. No one’s life is just one thing — there are highs and lows and fun. My childhood had these very traumatic moments, but they weren’t the only things that defined me, so the funny stories are in here.

I always kept the abuse stories on the side. But I would tell other stories that I look back on as fond memories, and I’d see Jason’s and June’s faces and they were shocked. And I’d say, “This is funny” and they’d say, “That is traumatic.”

When I’m telling one of those stories and I see someone tense up worrying how to react, I’d inevitably pull back and veer off. Writing the book I could give the push and the pull and guide the story, driving through the parts I want to tell while finding a balance.

Did moving from New York to Los Angeles help you grow or find yourself?

Moving to L.A. changed my outlook on so many things. It’s the self-help capital of the United States and people here do wild things. There’s a culture where people are fine talking about their issues and there’s a lack of judgment. Los Angeles is open to everything: scream therapy or this or that. They say, “My healer does this” or “I’ve done this ceremony” or “My myofascial release took out trauma.” I have a friend who went to Peru and did ayahuasca and changed his life, but I also have friends who do ayahuasca in an afternoon around somebody’s pool and I say, “You’re just doing drugs.”

So L.A. has freed me of a certain amount of self-judgment.

You started in improv and write about your Upright Citizens Brigade days. How did improv shape you as a person?

Improv to me is truly life. It’s about collaboration. And to me, as a human being, every relationship is about collaboration. To be a good improviser, you have to listen and react, taking cues from other people and giving your partner equal weight. Because it’s all about communication, it forces you to be a kinder human being.

The biggest thing in improv is trust. I was a person who had trust issues, and improv to me was a continual trust fall. In a scene I’m making a choice and I’m going to believe that someone is going to support me and catch me. For a long time in my life, I didn’t have that person to catch me. I always protected myself so I wouldn’t fall. Improv opened me up to believe I can surround myself with good people and then I can do anything with them. Those tenets really have changed my life, and that’s something else I didn’t fully realize until writing the book.
