Choosing a Master’s Degree Program in Education

Sifting through the myriad master’s in education degree programs may seem daunting. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a program.

Accreditation and program quality

Start by ensuring the program is from an accredited institution—accreditation is recognition from a third-party accrediting organization that an institution maintains a particular level of educational standards. Reassurance of program quality isn’t necessarily the only reason to choose an accredited school, however. Many schools do not accept transfer credits from institutions that aren’t accredited. And federal financial aid may only be granted to you if you attend an accredited school.

You could also investigate the quality of the program itself by looking at program rankings, speaking with alumni, and examining retention rates.

Curriculum and concentrations

At this point you might have a general idea of the specific type of degree you want to pursue. However, keep in mind that there is a fair amount of overlap among some of the degree types, and schools might vary with regard to the emphasis of their program. Thus, you might want to keep an open mind about degree type when researching master’s programs.

Regardless of degree type, take time to examine the curriculum and understand the concentrations a school offers. Consider your career goals and determine whether a program could help you meet them.

Faculty and mentorship

Dedicated and experienced faculty members may contribute significantly to the quality of a master’s program. Look for programs that emphasize a strong faculty-student relationship and offer mentorship opportunities. Engaging with knowledgeable mentors could provide invaluable guidance, support, and networking connections throughout your academic and professional journey.

Cost and financial aid

Take time to evaluate the overall expenses of degree programs you are interested in, including tuition, fees, textbooks, and potential living costs. Research financial aid options, such as scholarships, grants, and assistantships, to determine the availability of financial support. Additionally, consider the return on investment of the program by researching post-graduation employment rates and average salaries.

Online vs. On-Campus Master's Programs in Education

Today many master’s programs are offered either partially or wholly online. When considering online education, it could be helpful to evaluate personal learning preferences, lifestyle, and goals to determine if this mode of learning might align with your individual needs. Recognizing the advantages and disadvantages could help you make an informed decision and maximize your chances of success in an online learning environment.

Potential advantages of online programs

  • Flexibility and convenience: One of the primary advantages of attending an online university is the flexibility it offers. Online programs allow students to access coursework and lectures from anywhere with an internet connection, providing the freedom to study at their own pace and accommodate personal or professional obligations. This flexibility may be particularly beneficial for working professionals or individuals with family responsibilities who might find it challenging to attend classes on a fixed schedule.
  • Accessibility: Online education opens doors for individuals who may not have easy access to traditional educational institutions. Students living in remote areas, individuals with physical disabilities, or those with limited transportation options could pursue higher education without the constraints of geographical limitations. Online universities provide an inclusive environment that reaches a diverse student population.
  • Enhanced self-discipline and time management: Successfully completing an online degree requires self-discipline and strong time management skills. Students in online programs must take responsibility for organizing their study schedules, meeting deadlines, and staying motivated. These skills are highly valuable in today's fast-paced professional world, where self-direction and time management are essential.

Potential disadvantages of online programs

  • Limited interaction: Traditional classroom settings offer opportunities for in-person discussions, networking, and immediate feedback. While online universities strive to create virtual communities and foster interaction through discussion boards and video conferences, some students may miss the in-person engagement and collaborative learning experiences. In addition, some students might miss out on the social aspect of education.
  • Self-motivation and accountability: While online education offers flexibility, it also demands a high level of self-motivation and accountability. Without regular in-person classes and face-to-face interactions with instructors, students must stay motivated to keep up with coursework and manage their time effectively. Procrastination and lack of discipline often pose significant challenges for individuals who might struggle with self-motivation.
  • Technology requirements: Online programs require reliable internet access and may require you to have certain technology, such as a computer or webcam.

Graduate Admission

The graduate programs at UCLA are some of the most esteemed in the world, consistently ranked in the top 25. Forty doctoral programs rank in the top 10.

Our campus offers more than 130 graduate and professional programs, ranging from an extensive selection of business and medical programs to degrees in 40 different languages. On average, UCLA admits 14,000 graduate students of the 55,000 who apply each year. At UCLA, you’ll be among the best and brightest in the world.

Our programs combine the learnings of one field with the components of another, to create a hybrid of deep specialized knowledge. The notion that knowledge is produced through multidisciplinary approaches is paramount at UCLA. We offer faculty and graduate students the opportunity to collaborate on research projects and study groups that transcend departments and programs.

These collaborations go beyond the campus. UCLA enjoys strong connections to other major universities as well as public and private institutes and firms thanks to its location within Los Angeles. Our graduate students engage with these communities both academically and culturally as a part of the UCLA graduate experience. The students who thrive in the environment are creative, determined and unrelenting in their search for new ways to answer questions.

If this sounds like you, check out our programs and learn more about what we have to offer.

Los Angeles, the City of Angels, is of course best known for being the epicentre of the American entertainment industry, but it is also a city that has something to offer for very diverse of people.

Many neighbourhoods in Los Angeles are connected by what are known as ‘secret staircases’, which have been inherited by the city from a time before mass transportation, and they offer a way to get to know the city more intimately.

Some other lesser known attractions are Echo Park Lake and the Botanical Garden at Huntington Library, great places for those who want to relax far away from the huge crowds often associated with L.A.

Student opinions about studying in los angeles.

“The locals here avoid the most touristy beaches and instead prefer beaches like El Matador, Cabrillo, Topanga and Abalone Cove. These are great ways to relax in this busy city without having to deal with huge crowds of tourists.”

“I made the mistake of not selecting my apartment based on the location of my university, so I ended up commuting for 2 hours every day which I really wish I could have avoided. Overall though the city is very alive and offers plenty of events and opportunities for connecting with people involved in the entertainment industry.”

“It can be hard to make friends in L.A sometimes because it seems like most people are mainly worried about advancing their careers and not much else. If you’re studying, make sure you take advantage of the clubs and societies available on your campus for meeting like-minded people, but if you’re not studying there are plenty of Facebook groups you can join with this purpose in mind.”

Los Angeles Key Facts for International Students

Since Los Angeles is a city devoted to the entertainment business, you can find all manner of live performances, whether it be music, plays, or comedy. The city has a long-standing reputation for attracting aspiring artists.

L.A is the place to be for all those who are looking to make contacts and connections in the entertainment industry, but that’s not all L.A is. For the rest of us who don’t dream of being on the big screen, L.A offers large municipal parks, observatories, a vibrant nightlife, and much more .

Students who attend universities participating in the U-Pass program are entitled to a transit pass, which gives unlimited usage of all Metro services in L.A. For many students, this will be a crucial money-saver, so it’s recommended to get it as soon as possible.

Many residents of Los Angeles advise newcomers to try to find an apartment in the area that you will most often need to be during your day-to-day routine, as the public transport isn’t very reliable, or affordable. If you don’t do this, you may spend a good portion of your day commuting.

Rent prices are generally high. The most expensive areas for housing are Santa Monica, Venice, and Beverly Hills. In general, better rental prices can be found in San Fernando Valley (or just ‘the Valley’ for the locals).

Living in Los Angeles is not realistic on minimum wage, so it’s recommended to try to arrange your work situation prior to arrival.

The president of Columbia University has resigned, effective immediately

Columbia’s upper manhattan campus was at the center of a protest movement connected to the israel-hamas war that swept college campuses nationwide, by the associated press • published august 14, 2024 • updated on august 14, 2024 at 8:35 pm.

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik resigned effective immediately, the head of the prestigious New York university announced in a message to the university community on Wednesday.

Columbia’s upper Manhattan campus was at the center of a protest movement connected to the Israel-Hamas war that swept college campuses nationwide with thousands arrested and end-of-year graduation ceremonies disrupted. In her statement, she acknowledged those protests factored into her decision.

“This period has taken a considerable toll on my family, as it has for others in the community,” Shafik wrote. “Over the summer, I have been able to reflect and have decided that my moving on at this point would best enable Columbia to traverse the challenges ahead."

In addition to the protests, the school in July removed three deans, who have since resigned, after officials said they exchanged disparaging texts during a campus discussion about Jewish life and antisemitism. Shafik said in a July 8 letter to the school community that the messages were unprofessional and “disturbingly touched on ancient antisemitic tropes.”

Shafik said in her letter that she will return to the United Kingdom to lead an effort by the foreign secretary’s office reviewing the government's approach to international development and how to improve capability.

“I am very pleased and appreciative that this will afford me the opportunity to return to work on fighting global poverty and promoting sustainable development, areas of lifelong interest to me,” she wrote. “It also enables me to return to the House of Lords to reengage with the important legislative agenda put forth by the new UK government.”

Shafik was named president of the university last year and was the first woman to take on the role, and she was one of several women newly appointed to take the reins at Ivy League institutions.

She had previously led the London School of Economics and before that worked at the World Bank, where she rose through the ranks to become the bank’s youngest-ever vice president.

Shafik also worked at the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, followed by stints at the International Monetary Fund and the Bank of England.

She earned her master’s degree at the London School of Economics and earned a doctorate at Oxford University.

At the time of Shafik’s appointment, Columbia Board of Trustees chair Jonathan Lavine described her as a leader who deeply understood “the academy and the world beyond it.”

“What set Minouche apart as a candidate,” Lavine had said in a statement, “is her unshakable confidence in the vital role institutions of higher education can and must play in solving the world’s most complex problems.”

Roger Rossier MA ’63, EdD ’72, lifelong educator known for his significant contributions to educational research and policy, passed away at 92

The namesake of the USC Rossier School of Education passed away on Aug. 11, 2024.

Roger Rossier

Roger Rossier MA ’63, EdD ’72, a lifelong educator known for his significant contributions to educational research and policy, and the namesake of the USC Rossier School of Education, passed away on Aug. 11, 2024. He was 92.

A two-time alumnus of USC, Rossier had a long career in education and service, including positions as a geography teacher, dean of guidance at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, a counselor at Cypress Community College, and as a member of the United States Navy.

Although Roger and his wife, Barbara J. Rossier EdD ’71, attended USC, they didn’t meet until after graduating in the early 1960s with master’s degrees in educational guidance. Before completing his degree at USC, Roger worked as a driver’s education instructor and as a geography teacher at Santa Ana Valley High School. In 1964, they formally met while serving as school counselors at Westminster High School. They both later returned to USC for their doctorates; Barbara completed hers in 1971, and Roger completed his in 1972. What followed was a lifelong journey to positively transform education across the nation.

In 1980, Roger and Barbara Rossier purchased a small private school in Orange County dedicated to special-needs students with delays in academic, social and/or emotional development. Under their leadership, it became one of the largest special-education schools in the state. Roger served as vice president of Rossier Educational Enterprises, overseeing the career counseling, transportation, and travel divisions, building on his expertise in counseling international students at Cypress Community College. Both Roger and Barbara dedicated their lives to pursuing educational equity and strived for a society that offers a strong education to people of all backgrounds.

In September 1998, that work culminated when the couple announced a $20 million gift to USC’s School of Education. At the time, it was believed to be the single largest gift ever made to a school of education in the United States. In recognition of their generosity and commitment to excellence in education, the USC Board of Trustees voted to rename the then 90-year-old school the USC Barbara J. and Roger W. Rossier School of Education.

“Roger Rossier’s impact on the field of education will be felt for generations,” said USC Rossier Dean Pedro Noguera . “Roger was a person of conviction and integrity who worked to provide opportunity for those without it. His support and leadership transformed our institution into a modern, influential school of education that impacts research and practice worldwide. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the passing of Roger Rossier, and we are eternally grateful for his positive and lasting influence.”

“[Barbara and I] both feel that we have the responsibility to make sure that others have the opportunity that was afforded to us,” Roger Rossier said when announcing his historic gift to USC’s School of Education.

Rossier remained steadfast in his commitment to USC over the years. In 2016, Roger was inducted into USC’s Half Century Trojan Hall of Fame. He also served on USC’s Athletics Board of Counselors, chaired the USC Rossier Counseling Advisory Council and chaired the USC Alumni Association Board of Governors Scions Scholarship Committee.

Roger Rossier is survived by two sons, Dan and Steve; grandchildren Jennifer, Seth and Sophia; and daughters-in-law Linda and Anne. Barbara Rossier passed away on Aug. 11, 2013, at the age of 78.

Most UCLA master’s students have the Capstone Plan . If you are in a field with this plan, your “examination” may be in the form of an examination, capstone project, tests, papers, individual or team projects, or some other format decided by the faculty in your program. At least three faculty members will evaluate your work. In some programs the capstone may serve as a screening exam for admission to its Doctoral Program.

WRITE & FILE YOUR THESIS

For those students on a Thesis Track,  you will complete an approved thesis that demonstrates your ability to perform original, independent research in order to complete your master’s degree. Before you begin work on your thesis, you will obtain approval of the subject and general plan from your committee.

Once advanced to candidacy, a Thesis Track student is able to then submit a master’s thesis.

ADVANCEMENT TO CANDIDACY

At the half-way point in your Master’s studies, you’ll apply to advance to candidacy. You must demonstrate to your faculty committee that you’re prepared to be awarded this degree. To initiate this evaluation, a student requests an advancement to candidacy no later than two weeks into the term in which awarding of the degree is expected.

UCLA can’t allow protesters to block Jewish students from campus, judge rules

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the University of California, Los Angeles, cannot allow pro-Palestinian protesters to block Jewish students from accessing classes and other parts of campus.

The preliminary injunction marks the first time a U.S. judge has ruled against a university over the demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war on college campuses earlier this year.

U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi’s ruling came in a lawsuit filed in June by three Jewish students at UCLA. The students alleged that they experienced discrimination on campus during the protest because of their faith and that UCLA failed to ensure access to campus for all Jewish students.

“In the year 2024, in the United States of America, in the State of California, in the City of Los Angeles, Jewish students were excluded from portions of the UCLA campus because they refused to denounce their faith.” Scarsi wrote.

UCLA argued that it has no legal responsibility over the issue because protesters, not the university, blocked Jewish students’ access to the school. The university also worked with law enforcement to thwart attempts to set up new protest camps .

Image

Scarsi ruled that the university is prohibited from providing classes and access to buildings on campus if Jewish students are blocked from it.

Yitzchok Frankel, a UCLA law student who filed the lawsuit, celebrated the order.

“No student should ever have to fear being blocked from their campus because they are Jewish,” Frankel said in a statement. “I am grateful that the court has ordered UCLA to put a stop to this shameful anti-Jewish conduct.”

UCLA spokesperson Mary Osako said the ruling “would improperly hamstring our ability to respond to events on the ground and to meet the needs of the Bruin community.”

The university is also considering all available options moving forward, she said.

“UCLA is committed to fostering a campus culture where everyone feels welcome and free from intimidation, discrimination, and harassment,” Osako said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The ruling came after Scarsi ordered UCLA last month to create a plan to protect Jewish students . The University of California, one of the nation’s largest public university systems, is also working on systemwide campus guidelines on protests.

The demonstrations at UCLA became part of a movement at campuses across the country against the Israel-Hamas war. At UCLA, law enforcement ordered in May that over a thousand protesters break up their encampment as tensions rose on campus. Counter-demonstrators had attacked the encampment overnight and at least 15 protesters suffered injuries. In June, dozens of protesters on campus were arrested after they tried to set up a new encampment.

LAUSD puts $9 billion in bonds on ballot that would update campuses and raise property taxes

An electric L.A. school bus is stopped in a bus parking lot.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

The Los Angeles Board of Education on Wednesday voted unanimously to put a $9-billion school construction bond on the ballot in November — the largest in district history and comparable in size to the $10-billion statewide school bond measure that is already going before voters.

If approved by at least 55% of voters, the L.A. Unified School District bond would raise property taxes for the median-priced home about $273 a year, according to estimates by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assn. A district spokesperson put the median impact at closer to $100, saying the fee would be based on a home’s assessed value, not the market value.

The overall rate of taxation will be $25 per year for every $100,000 of assessed valuation, adding to a property tax bill that already contains fees for other purposes, including for the repayment of earlier school bonds.

“The time is now,” said L.A. schools Supt. Alberto Carvalho during Wednesday’s specially called meeting. “I know this is a tough question. It is never an easy one, but what we do defines who we are.”

What makes the question tougher is that L.A. Unified is asking for more facilities funding amid steadily declining enrollment — a trend that experts say will ultimately lead to the closing of campuses, including those that are part of the bond spending plan.

The $9 billion amount is “not too much,” Carvalho said, in the context of a calculated need of $80 billion, alluding to a district estimate.

The benefits and costs of these bonds apply only to areas within the boundaries of the Los Angeles Unified School District. That includes the city of L.A., as well as all or part of some two dozen smaller cities, including Bell, Maywood, South Gate and San Fernando.

At Wednesday’s meeting nearly all public speakers strongly supported the bond, although some objected to particulars.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assn. opposes the bond.

“At a time when Los Angeles homeowners are struggling to pay the high cost of living, including skyrocketing utility bills, this bond would sharply increase property taxes,” said Susan Shelley, the group’s vice president for communications.

She added: “With enrollment declining, taxpayers have a right to ask that all possible cost savings be implemented before the district asks for another tax increase.”

L.A. school officials said in a staff report that the needs “are great — more than 60% of school buildings are over 50 years old and desperately in need of upgrades, which means most of Los Angeles Unified students are attending school in deteriorating and aging facilities that do not meet today’s standards for learning and safety.”

Your guide to Proposition 2: Education bond

School bond supports say the money is direly needed to help fund repairs and upgrades at thousands of California public elementary, middle and high schools and community colleges.

July 5, 2024

The meeting was scheduled with 24 hours’ advance notice — the legal minimum. The board faced a Friday deadline to get the bond issue on the November ballot.

How would the bond money be used?

A summary of the initiative spoke of the need “to upgrade, modernize, and replace aging and deteriorating school facilities, including school technology infrastructure and equipment.”

Goals also include “enhancing and expanding outdoor spaces and food services for students” and promoting “energy efficiency.”

Projections call for about $5 billion for “major modernizations, upgrades and reconfigurations to school campuses.”

Other funding areas include: $75 million for electric buses; $461 million for cafeteria upgrades: $258 million to make spaces accessible for those with disabilities; $70.5 million for security cameras.

About $1.25 billion is to go toward school greening projects. These could include planting trees, removing asphalt from playgrounds, installing outdoor classrooms and erecting shade structures.

Mireya Valencia, progam director of the L.A. Neighborhood Land Trust, called for more, saying about $3 billion is needed for such efforts.

About $300 million is provisionally set aside for charter schools, which enroll about 22% of district students. That amount is too low, said Keith Dell-Aquila, an advocate with the California Charter Schools Assn. He added that the district should adjust its plans on how the money would be spent.

District officials said they had flexibility on spending decisions, but did not commit to making specific changes.

Charters are privately operated public schools that frequently make use of available space in district-operated campuses. The charter association has not taken a position on the bond.

All board members praised the upcoming bond effort. But board member Nick Melvoin said the district needs to examine its construction practices.

“Things need to be done more efficiently, more quickly, and more cheaply,” Melvoin said. “We need to work harder and we need to work better.”

A history of overcrowding

From the mid-1980s through the early 2000s, the school system coped with crowding by operating year-round — but with a calendar that reduced the number of school days for students by nearly a month. And scheduling limitations excluded many students from advanced coursework. Meanwhile, playgrounds became seas of asphalt broken up by portable classroom buildings.

In response, the school system has passed a series of bonds since the late 1990s.

High construction costs reduced the original scope of the projects, but the effort returned students to a full school year and to their neighborhood schools. This was possible in part because enrollment began to decline steadily, a trend that has continued.

New challenges in 2024

The current challenge is to repair aging campuses and modernize and improve classrooms and school buildings.

The existing construction program is not yet out of money. About $3.5 billion is assigned to projects that have been approved but not put out to bid. Another $1.8 billion is earmarked for projects that the Board of Education has yet to approve.

An example of the current wave of projects is the ongoing reconstruction of Belvedere Middle School in East Los Angeles and Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights.

The work of the bond-funded construction also could be seen Monday at Jordan High School in Watts. Bond money had been used to build a wellness clinic that will serve the physical and mental health needs of families in a low-income community that is short on healthcare.

This clinic first opened in 2008, but the provider could not keep it going during the COVID-19 pandemic. A new provider, UMMA Community Clinic, is taking over the refurbished facility.

“What we have behind us is proof positive that what is happening in this community is still not a reality [in] many other communities,” Carvalho said at the clinic’s grand opening. “So continued investments in physical infrastructure like these wellness centers, like air conditioning units, like roofs, window replacement. All the things that we want to see in every single community continue to be a priority for our district and our school board.”

What about the state school bond?

Proposition 2 would allow the state to borrow $10 billion to help fund repairs and upgrades at school districts and community colleges.

The money from the last successful school bond, which passed in 2016, has long since been spent, and the state’s school repair fund is expected to be depleted by January. There is a wait list of districts hoping the new bond will pass so that $3.4 billion can be provided for already approved projects to take care of hazardous mold, leaky roofs and septic systems, as well as to build classrooms, modernize science labs and replace aging buildings.

If approved by a simple majority of voters, the bond would allow legislators to borrow money that would be repaid out of the state budget over time.

L.A. officials estimate that the district could be eligible for about $700 million from the state bond.
