Problems when running an advanced slideshow using Irfanview

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if someone can help me with running slideshows on a PC using Irfanview.

Here is what I am trying to do:

All my photos are kept on a server in my house, most of them are Lightroom’s dng RAW images, some are jpegs. I want to run a slideshow on my PC using the images on the server. I also want to load the previews inside dng files (because they show the version of the image I have modified using Lightroom).

So far, the only software which lets me do all this is Irfanview. Here is what I do:

  • I create a text file containing the list of images on my server.
  • Then I launch Irfanview using a script which reads that text file.

Details of those scripts are below.

It works but I want it to do more:

  • I want to be able to run two slideshows simultaneously. I have two monitors attached to my workstation here. The left side one is in the landscape orientation (regular) the right side one is in the portrait orientation, (vertical).
  • What I really would like to do is to show a slideshow of photos which were taken in the landscape orientation on the left monitor and show a slideshow of photos which were taken in portrait orientation on the right side monitor.

Still with me?

Strictly technically speaking, what I want should be do-able. After all:

  • Irfanview lets you run multiple slideshows simultaneously.
  • Irfanview also lets you run slideshows which specify which monitor to run on (if using fullscreen slideshow), and/or the position of the window where irfanview will run slideshow in (if using windowed slideshows)
  • The orientation of images could be read from EXIF data embedded inside the images. A list of files could be created based on the orientation of the photo.

Here is where I run into issues:

  • I am not able to actually run two Irfanview slideshows while specifying which monitor to run on. It seems like it does not read the switch I specify in the command line.
  • What tool can I use to create a list of files in portrait and landscape mode?

Anyone has any ideas?

PS: I tried to post this question to Irfanview’s own forums but new user registration is closed there.

Scripts and settings which I have been using:

To create a list of photos on my server:

"dir /s /b /a:-d "\\SERVER\Photos and Videos\2013\*.jpg" "\\SERVER\Photos and Videos\2013\*.dng" >c:\temp\imagelist.txt"

To run slideshow using Irfanview:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\IrfanView\i_view32.exe" /slideshow=c:\temp\imagelist.txt /reloadonloop /closeslideshow /monitor=1

Slideshow settings:

Set Random slide advancement and time

Show text: $D[27-100]$F $E36867

Does anyone have any response? Anyone? Bueller ?

Or, maybe someone can respond with an alternative software (to Irfanview) that they use to run slideshows?

What you require is much more than I would even think of attempting, however I found this and hope its of help.

Faced with a similar problem, I simply opted to show the few portrait-orientation images on the landscape screen; less than ideal, but workable. Hardware was nothing more than a USB stick running on a 40" U-HDTV.

Would it be too much of a compromise to have two monitors (portrait + landscape) and just run the slide-show to both, relying on the audience to switch their view as appropriate?

I understand the aim of your solution, but it seems complex. Could a script be developed (based on EXIF) to distribute the images to slave computers running the correct orientation? Extra computers are cheap these days.

So yes, that script is my goal! I just do not know how to achieve it, yet. I wish Irfanview's forums would be open. People there could help me quickly.

As for distributing it to slave computers...not sure about that but these days with stuff like chrome cast , it should be do-able.

I have been sitting on this project where I want to convert old laptops into wall mount photo frames running slideshows off my server. Do-able, YES, just need to get off my butt and work on it.

(snip) Could a script be developed (based on EXIF) to distribute the images to slave computers running the correct orientation? Extra computers are cheap these days.

Irfanview and Windows 11

I am totally frustrated. I have a new PC running Windows11. I've spent hours trying to force Windows to open photos in Irfanview, but I have failed. There is no option in Windows 11 for raw. although if I double-click on a Nikon nef file, it opens in MS Photos. I have followed all of the steps in the Irfanview site to no avail.

Is there any way to use Irfanview in Windows 11?

[solved]Irfanview Problem

I have used Irfanview for a long time and just started having a problem. I am on a laptop with limited a viewing area and when I do a PrtScreen and open Irfanview and paste it in I get the whole screen with a scroll bar on the side to be able too see the enture capture. I use to be able to crop something out even though some of the image would scroll out of view as I was cropping it and after selecting "crop selection" I would be able to see all of it with an available scroll bar and could post it somewhere like here and have the whole image available for viewing. Now when I do this what scrolls out of the range, even though it is still in the cropping borders is gone when I click "crop selection". I uninstalled Irfanview and reinstalled it to no avail. What am I missing.

I have kept fooling around with this problem and came up with a work-around but still can't understand why it will not show the whole image inside the cropping box. I cropped it like I have been doing and then re-cropped the same image and used the scroll bar to get it back centered and below is the results. This wasn't necessary before and I am just wondering what I could have done to cause this problem.

Hiya Deke! I haven't the foggiest idea why this has happened to you, but let me suggest a work-around . . . Go to View, Display Options, and select Fit images to window and then close IrfanView to save the setting. now, every time you open IrfanView, and paste an image (or open one) it will fit within the window space, with no scrollbars. hitting the + and - keys will zoom in and out Hope that helps.

Good Afternoon Randy I had it set to the default 1:1 and changed it to the one below as you suggested. The image is not quite as clear but your suggestion works for the bigger ones. Thanks and have a great day even though you are working(scary word for me) and take care.

Just tried some of my stored images of the grandkids and your suggestion works great and the images are clear and I don't have to scroll. I thought I had tweaked all the settings in Irfanview for maximum benefits but just goes to show that a fresh perspective is very beneficial.

Yeah, shrinking the image down to fit in the window will give you bad quality, but that is only viewable quality. The actual dimensions of the image are unchanged, just the way you are viewing it. Also, if do Alt+PrtScreen, it will only capture the active window, not the entire Screen. last option would be to use a screen Capture program. I use Gadwin PrintScreen so I can manually select the area I want to capture.

Irfanview has a fairly good screen capture but I haven't needed to use it much,

Thank again for the info. Will have a look at the program you mentioned. I am running on an old Acer with only 457mhz and I have to watch what I install.

Randy After I click PrtSc I get the preview window of the clipboard with the various control buttons on the right side to continue capture and so forth. I am having trouble doing the "select and double click for a capture. I tried using Irfanview as the device to open with. Should I leave everthing set at the default to capture as you mentioned. PS-I finally found the Help file in that preview window so maybe I will now get it set up correctly.

yo yea randy if you make a bigger file small it will have better quality, you'll notice it in games

Thanks Randy. You might know the only the only "Capture" item I didn't try was "Rectangular". Just gave up to soon. Works like a charm. Thanks for sticking with me on this. PS-This works great on text I want to save. Before I had to copy and paste to a text file.

Randy-One more thought on this. I thought I had read all the help file but missed this: "Rectangular capture areas are not automatically captured after you press the hot key. You must specify the area of the image that you want to capture. Position the cursor where you want to anchor the user-defined area drag to create a rectangular area capture. You can fine tune your capture by moving the sizing handles. After making any adjustments, press Enter or right-click anywhere to finish the capture."

Yes, and you can also double-click the captured area. If you change your mind, or p[ressed the Print Screen by accident, then pressing Escape will close the capture screen.

I finally got the Hot Key to change to F12 as I wanted to save the PrtScr key for Irfanview. I notice Gadin does not scroll when selecting but that is just a minor thing.

I can't duplicate your problem, and am using IrfanView 3.91 on a Win2k system. If uninstalling and resinstalling didn't work, nor did using different versions, I'd say it has something to do with another program that is running at the same time conflicting with it somehow??

One other slight difference is I am running 3.92 instead of 3.91. I will just use Gadin for most of my captures. The only downside is if they don't fit on this pisant size laptop screen. My wife is about ready to strangle me because I will not upgrade to a full desktop. Thanks for all the info.

  • I had two scanners (bundled with HP multi-devices: HP LaserJet 1530 and HP LaserJet M426) and IrfanView 4.35.
  • I've been scanning using this software-hardware setup for ages (years). All OK.
  • Tried to install third (old Plustek flatbed scanner), but I used wrong driver (so I wasn't able to scan from it using any software).
  • Uninstalled the faulty driver and trashed the old scanner (no Windows 11 scanner or support available).
  • After 2-3 days I noticed that IrfanView sees no TWAIN sources (where previously it saw two).
  • I have uninstalled IrfanView 4.35 completely and installed 4.60 in its place.
  • No scanner / TWAIN sources again.
  • I have installed drivers for my third scanner.

And the story returned back to point 5th. IrfanView sees neither this new scanner nor two older ones, while Windows 11 Pro and all other image-related software (Paint and NAPS2 in my case) sees all three drivers and is able to scan from all these TWAIN sources without any problems.

enter image description here

There's also a chance that the above story has nothing to do with this and that IrfanView stopped seeing any TWAIN source after recent update to (the newest) Windows 11 Pro 22H2. As these two events (Windows update and scanner access lost in IrfanView) happened in the fairly the same moment of time.

Has anyone of you already updated Windows 11 to 22H2 and can confirm that TWAIN sources are still there, as there were before this update?

I signed up here, because I had the same issue, and I actually managed to fix it. It's actually caused by an incorrect copy of the twain selector .dll (TWAINDSM.dll) that some scanner drivers add in the system folders. Irfranview then ends up loading it instead of the correct twain_32.dll that comes bundled with Windows.

To fix this, open a cmd prompt with admin rights and navigate to system32. Then run the following commands:

regsvr32 /u TWAINDSM.dll (this unregisters the dll if it's in use, if you get an error just ignore it, it probably wasn't registered then)

del /f TWAINDSM.dll

Repeat the same process for syswow64 folder. The scanner select window should work again.

  • I managed to fix this issue some other way (really don't remember, how; one day, out of nowhere all my scanners has returned). But, I am accepting your answer since it can be a valuable source od solutions for others. –  trejder Commented Aug 10, 2023 at 15:19

I can confirm that after the update to Windows 11 22H2 the TWAIN drivers have disappeared. Now I can use in IrfanView 4.62 32-bit only with the Canon Lide 400 Driver

Canon Lide 400 Driver

My Windows 11 is 22H2 (OS Build 22610.1)

I had a suggestion that the drivers were 32-bit, so I installed the 32-bit IrfanView to make sure it works better with them.

  • I am accepting your answer, because it partially resolved my issue. Installing 32-bit IrfanView did forced scanners to appear in "Select Source" window. But selecting any of it and then clicking OK in TWAIN Acquire window brings no effect. As an effect, my IrfanView stopped being usable for any kind of scanning. –  trejder Commented Dec 18, 2022 at 13:42
  • I would proceed with the installation of the drivers of the scanner, then. If after selecting the scanner it cannot proceed - re-installing the scanner-drivers should help. One more, but important thing is to install the IrfanView Plugins (32-bit), they contain support for numerous formats, and may help for scanning to work too. irfanview.com/plugins.htm –  Victor Ivanov Commented Dec 20, 2022 at 13:16

File association should only affect what happens when double-click an image file from windows explorer. When that's said I've never tried to install Irfanview from the store. I wonder if webp images are supposed to be natively supported without the plugins package? Have you tried to simply download and install the plugins package and see if that helps ?

Exported .PNG files cannot be opened in IrfanView ("Decode error, Invalid or unsupported PNG file") #123

First of all, thank you for making

I use IrfanView (a very popular image viewer) as my picture viewer, .
For any .NFO I've tried to export to .PNG ( )
-for example (please unzip)-
the cannot be opened in IrfanView:
the following error is displayed instead :

Related info from the IrfanView forum ( ) (about 3 months ago) by the IrfanView author :

In order to avoid errors and overflows, IrfanView will stop.

So, I've made this issue here (instead of the IrfanView forum)
because IrfanView is a very popular image viewer,
and I've never had any issues with any image files before,
so I thought that maybe something could be changed in Infekt,
to make the exported .PNG files more compatible with LibPNG.

I see in the Infekt changelog that it uses LibPNG v1.6.28.
I've contacted IrfanView author regarding this issue, and for the exact LibPNG version that the program currently uses (it's not mentioned in its site).

Some form of quantum error correction is necessary to produce large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers and finds broad relevance in physics. Most studies customarily assume exact correction. However, codes that may only enable approximate quantum error correction (AQEC) could be useful and intrinsically important in many practical and physical contexts. Here we establish rigorous connections between quantum circuit complexity and AQEC capability. Our analysis covers systems with both all-to-all connectivity and geometric scenarios like lattice systems. To this end, we introduce a type of code parameter that we call subsystem variance, which is closely related to the optimal AQEC precision. For a code encoding k logical qubits in n physical qubits, we find that if the subsystem variance is below an O ( k / n ) threshold, then any state in the code subspace must obey certain circuit complexity lower bounds, which identify non-trivial phases of codes. This theory of AQEC provides a versatile framework for understanding quantum complexity and order in many-body quantum systems, generating new insights for wide-ranging important physical scenarios such as topological order and critical quantum systems. Our results suggest that O (1/ n ) represents a common, physically profound scaling threshold of subsystem variance for features associated with non-trivial quantum order.
