International Education Training Center (IETC)
As demand for international education increases around the world, school demographics are shifting to have greater representation in host country nationals. While schools continue to recruit overseas teachers with western trained pedagogy and experience, more and more are recognizing the need for greater diversity to address local needs. Resident educators have natural insight and alignment with host country national children–their culture, language and history–and therefore have valuable contributions that schools want and need to leverage and incorporate. However, there are scarce international opportunities for professional development that effectively address the local educator’s perspective and needs.
In 2015, ISS-ULink responded to this need with the creation of the International Education Training Center (IETC). IETC is the only professional development program especially designed for teachers with little to no exposure to research-based best practice training to further expand their learning of teaching. The program was honed in the dynamic learning laboratories of ISS China-based schools for national students.
IETC builds a common understanding of teaching and learning amongst all teachers – national and/or international. The provision of this common language allows for the professional dialogue and collegiality needed to truly develop every culturally inclusive school into a powerful learning-based institution.
IETC provides tailored professional development training to support teachers in China and other countries, to internationalize best instructional practices by:
- Scaffolding best practice, based on research theory and presented in the local context
- Adopting more student-centered inquiry and problem-solving activities
- Applying innovative and flexible strategies for curriculum delivery to better meet the needs of students
- Providing students with 21st century skills
International Education Training Center (IETC) serves educators from public, private and international schools seeking research-based best practice professional development, and is committed to continuously refining and improving the training model through the process of Research – Practice – Application. It offers the only Certificate of International Pedagogy, which consists of three required foundational courses and one pre-selected elective course. The certificate will recognize engagement in training designed particularly for teachers working or intending to work in international education contexts. Additionally, participants have the option of obtaining approved graduate credit at an additional cost from the State University of New York (SUNY), where courses may be transferable to their SUNY Buffalo State degree and certificate programs.
IETC Certificate Of International Teaching Pedagogy

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month: Indiana & Hawaii
May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and May 1st is celebrated as “Lei Day.” At first glance, Indiana and Hawaii may appear worlds apart, separated by thousands of miles of land and sea. However, beneath the surface, there are profound ties that bind these states together, spanning cultural, educational, and even financial realms.
Educational Exchange
Educationally, the connections between Indiana and Hawaii run deep. Many Hoosiers pursue academic endeavors in Hawaii, whether through exchange programs, research opportunities, or educational partnerships between institutions. Conversely, Hawaiian students often find themselves drawn to Indiana’s renowned universities and colleges, seeking to broaden their horizons and enrich their academic experiences.
These educational exchanges not only facilitate the transfer of knowledge and ideas but also foster cultural understanding and appreciation. Students from both states have the opportunity to immerse themselves in different perspectives, languages, and traditions, preparing them to navigate an increasingly interconnected world.
Economic Synergy
Furthermore, the financial ties between these states underscore the interconnectedness of our global economy. Indiana businesses frequently engage in trade and investment with Hawaii, facilitating the exchange of goods, services, and ideas across state lines. From agricultural products to advanced manufacturing, the economic partnership between Indiana and Hawaii contributes to job creation, innovation, and economic growth on both sides.
Moreover, the tourism industry plays a significant role in strengthening the economic bonds between Indiana and Hawaii. Hoosiers often flock to Hawaii’s picturesque beaches and lush landscapes, seeking relaxation and adventure in paradise. Conversely, Hawaiian tourists explore Indiana’s cultural attractions, culinary scene, and natural wonders, contributing to the state’s tourism revenue and promoting cross-cultural exchange.
A Brief History of Hawaii
To fully appreciate the connection between Indiana and Hawaii, it’s essential to understand the history behind Hawaii’s integration into the United States. In 1959, Hawaii officially became the 50th state of the union, marking a significant milestone in its journey toward self-determination and statehood. Prior to its annexation by the United States in 1898, Hawaii was a sovereign kingdom with a rich indigenous culture and heritage.
Since then, Hawaii has flourished as a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and ideologies, enriching the fabric of American society in countless ways. From its vibrant music and dance to its delectable cuisine and warm hospitality, Hawaii’s influence permeates every aspect of American culture, reminding us of the enduring legacy of its indigenous peoples and immigrant communities.
At The Center
Audrey Hughey , Executive Assistant & Board Liaison at The International Center, fondly reflects on her time spent in Hawaii, reminiscing about the profound impact of Hawaiian culture on her life:
“I had the privilege of receiving and giving lei throughout the state. Each lei experience was memorable, filled with friendship, fragrance, and beautiful lei art. Lei made of flowers, shells, feathers, bone, etc. and often proprietary in material or design, my favorites were made of pikaki, plumeria, and ginger. I still have a few shell lei and wear them from time to time in honor of old friends and memories of Aloha.”
Taina Lance’s relatives pictured at a graduation ceremony with traditional lei
Taina Lance , Director of Relocation Services, recalls the tradition of lei-giving at graduation ceremonies, where the student is often weighed down by an assortment of lei:
“In Hawaii, it is tradition at graduation ceremonies for family and friends to drape the graduate in lei to symbolize affection, congratulations and good fortune. Lei can be made from flowers, leaves, nuts, shells, ribbons, candy, and perhaps the most coveted material for new grads: cash! If you come from a large family, you get covered up to your nose like this young man!”
In conclusion, the connections between Indiana and Hawaii serve as a testament to the power of cultural exchange and mutual respect. As we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Month, let us embrace the diversity that enriches our communities and fosters understanding across borders. Through shared experiences and collective efforts, we can bridge the gap between states, forging lasting connections that transcend distance and unite us in the spirit of aloha.

Innovative Leicester centre spearheads international initiative
Professor Jeremy Howick
An international network which is driving forward empathic healthcare across the world has staged its first ever meeting in Leicester.
The International Network for Empathy in Healthcare is made up of key empathic healthcare organisations and leaders from across the globe who are working together to encourage countries to put empathy at the heart of healthcare.
Representatives from throughout the UK, USA and Australia descended on Leicester on 21 April for the organisation’s first international meeting which was arranged by founding member, The Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare which is based at the University of Leicester.
Stoneygate Centre Director Professor Jeremy Howick said: “We were thrilled to spearhead this pivotal event which brought together leading experts from empathy centres from around the world.
“Empathy research, practice and teaching are thriving globally because healthcare professionals and educators are increasingly realising the importance of practising empathetically.
“Researchers have shown that it can improve patient outcomes, make their experience of healthcare better and also help healthcare professionals to cope with the pressures of fast-paced healthcare systems.
“Our first meeting was a huge step forward because it gave us the opportunity to learn from each other and share best practice so we can act as a catalyst for an international move towards more empathic healthcare.”
Organisations involved in the networking included The Empathy Initiative from Australia, The Empathy Project, NYU Langone Health and T Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion from the US and The Oxford Empathy Programme in the UK.
