13 Must-Watch Horror BookTubers

One of the best things about the book community is that we expand over multiple platforms, including good old BookTube/YouTube!

I wrote a blog post similar to this years ago, but I wanted to revisit the topic as I've discovered so many more talented creators that I want to highlight in addition to the ones I've previously mentioned that have continued to wow me with their spookiful bookish content.

The majority of these accounts also have less than 10k subscribers at most, so you can check out these smaller creators who really put their heart and soul into their work. A lot of these creators also double as bookstagrammers, authors, editors, designers and more so you can have the best of both worlds in so many ways.

horror book reviews youtube

Harpies in The Trees

Harpies in the Trees aka Mers was one of the channels that got me into the Horror BookTube space. Her videos range from book reviews to spooky unboxing, special projects such as 'creepy audio storytelling' and even the occasional collaboration. Regardless, you can tell that so much time and talent that has been put into each video and it's really inspiring and interesting to watch. You really have a treasure trove of macabre here and it's not to be missed!

Also, the gothic atmosphere in her videos is to die for with candles, bats and other spooky decor littering the dimly lit background.

horror book reviews youtube

Marie McWilliams

Author and horror fan Marie McWilliams brings us a spookiful channel for all your spooky bookish needs. From gothy unboxings, book reviews, book tags and other fun stuff, there is a lot to dive into. There are also some really helpful advice videos for those wanting to start a Bookstagram platform if you're looking for some genuine tips.

Marie's warm personality really brings this channel together, making for a great stop for anyone obsessed with horror and the gothic.

horror book reviews youtube

Jordaline Reads

The first video I found on Jordaline's channel a few years ago was her 'Horror Books for each Zodiac Sign!' video and she got me, a Capricorn, hooked on her content with the line "when I think of discipline [Capricorn trait], when I think of patience, when I think of practical, I think of cannibals."

The amount of thought that goes into each video combined with Jordaline's wit and blunt takes makes for a very fun and interesting watch. Also, her recent reading journal set up video almost made me want to dive back into my dark academia phase XD

horror book reviews youtube

crtlaltcassie

Cassie is new to the BookTube scene but has years of book reviewing experience under the rainbow-coloured belt. Not only are her videos visually stunning to watch with the explosion of colour but they're also filled with so many diverse bookish recommendations in her monthly reading wrap ups that'll (hopefully) give you the motivation to finish your own tbr.

This is another great option for horror readers who also want a bit variety as Cassie also occasionally covers romance, science fiction, fantasy and many other genres aside from horror.

horror book reviews youtube

Syn's Book Nook

Syn's channel is a treasure trove of book reviews, book tags and other fun, spooky content. Fans of genre fiction will be delighted as she not only covers horror, but fantasy and science fiction as well.

I immediately fell into Syn's content as she does an amazing job at pitching the books to you, especially with such a genuine and engaging tone that I struggled to click away from. Her content is also very bite-sized so you can easily get through one of her reviews while doing chores or putting together a snack (although, for me, the latter is more likely XD).

horror book reviews youtube

Author D.L. Tillery

D.L. Tillery's channel is a like a lucky dip of spooky content. From dark poetry readings to reading challenges and more, she surely has something for any and all horror lovers.

As an indie horror author, she also brings a unique perspective and insight into the book world, especially through her 'author talk' videos and her 'Mistress of the Dark' podcast.

horror book reviews youtube

DarkBetweenPages

Nichi's channel is a great place for those who want to dig deeper into the world of horror books. Although she's got plenty to offer with many spooky book reviews, reading wrap ups and reading challenges, the highlight of her channel is definitely her 'Author Spotlights'.

These videos involve Nichi interviewing a wide range of horror authors such as Marcus Hawke, Sonora Taylor and more, to get further insight into their publications.

horror book reviews youtube

Typical Books

The bulk of Lydia/Typical Book's content revolves around book recommendations and reviews, as well as a few reading challenges, hauls and tags sprinkled throughout.

Lydia's channel is great for those who like a very calm, almost soothing vibe to their bookish content. As well, as a great mix of classics, new releases and hidden gems in their book recommendation videos.

Also, I'm in love with her spooky, gothic bookshelf backdrop!!

horror book reviews youtube

Cameron Chaney

If you love unboxing and haul videos, definitely check out Cameron's channel as it is unboxing galore! It's like the joy of buying all these monthly subscription boxes minus the pain in your wallet.

There are also a plethora of thorough book reviews and the occasional bookshelf tour. Cameron's content is not only perfect for any horror reader but his presentation style is very engaging, making for a great viewing experience.

horror book reviews youtube

The Bookubus

The Bookubus aka Alex has been on the BookTube scene for many years and her experience clearly comes through in her engaging and gloomy content.

The highlight of her channel is definitely her monthly wrap ups and the fact that you can also find some hidden or unknown gems in her videos, not just the most popular, trending ones.

horror book reviews youtube

Nightmare Maven

goodness. From film reviews, book reviews, discussions on the latest spooky releases, hauls and more, you're truly spoiled for choice thanks to the wide range of content available.

Her reviews and recommendations are very in-depth and helpful as she mentions the best and the worst of whatever she is reviewing, giving a very honest outlook in each video.

horror book reviews youtube

TheShadesOfOrange

Rachel's channel is a beautiful library of book recommendations, book hauls and reviews. The types of books she covers are vast, ranging from space operas to coming of age mysteries, witchy horror and more - ensuring that there is something for everyone.

This channel is a definite go-to if you're looking for book recommendations with each video filled with plenty of potential 'stabby' choices. Rachel does an amazing job at describing a book and why a potential reader would love it, as well as the strength of weakness of the book, giving us a truly genuine and thoughtful opinion to help us decide what our next spooky read will be.

horror book reviews youtube

Hey Little Thrifter

Hey Little Thrifter was possibly one of the first faces I saw once I stumbled into the Horror niche of BookTube. From singular reviews to book hauls, wrap-ups and the occasional film review, Alex brings a lot to the table with her structured reviewers and videos, and of course, her wonderful backdrop.

Her book hauls are a favourite of mine since they have a very laid back and chill vibe, meaning I can easily listen whilst I'm completing other tasks (or procrastinating more likely XD).

HI! SO, I MAKE BOOK TRAILERS!

Below are three book trailers I've made in the past, two being for my own novellas and one for Haley Newlin's 'Take Your Turn, Teddy'. I'm currently open to new projects for those wanting a trailer to help promote their releases <3

The Ladies of Horror BookTube

Readers can discover new books in a variety of ways. Reviews of horror fiction can be found on social media platforms like Instagram (#bookstagram), Twitter, Facebook and even TikTok. Pick up one of several magazines focusing on Horror, like Rue Morgue , SCREAM , or Fangoria and there will be a section with horror book reviews. But perhaps the most interactive and personal way readers can enjoy book reviews is BookTube—readers talking about books on YouTube. As a woman writing horror fiction reviews myself, I am well aware of the growing sisterhood. So many more women have stepped forward in the last five years loudly and proudly voicing their love for horror fiction. We've heard from the menfolk for many, many years...it's time to turn up the volume and amplify the voices of women who are passionate about horror.

horror book reviews youtube

About: Marie prides herself on being a lover of the dark and macabre as well as just being an all around "weirdo". She reviews horror fiction, unboxings of subscription services, gives writing advice and helpful bookstagram tips.

What I like: Marie is from Belfast, Northern Ireland and has a beautiful accent. Her aesthetic is gothic but with a touch of whimsy. I find her personality to be authentic and not performative like some BookTube hosts tend to be. Marie has a prolific #bookstagram account as well so she brings a certain level of that community to her videos that I particularly enjoy.

horror book reviews youtube

About: Rachel is from Canada. She has a well-rounded approach to the horror genre, reading from a variety of horror sub-genres. Her videos range from recommendations to reviews and wrap-ups to book hauls.

What I like: Readers will feel informed on everything the horror genre has to offer. Rachel has an eclectic taste, showcasing books from the indie and mainstream markets. Her voice is soothing and sophisticated. Every time I watch one of her videos, I am always in awe of her level of professionalism. She's almost like a TV journalist in that she doesn't fall into that "Um and Uh" trap so many other hosts trip over.

horror book reviews youtube

About: Mers lives in Berlin. Her channel is unique in that she dresses up in elaborate costumes or employs her photoshop skills to make herself look creepy. You should definitely check out her Instagram too.

What I like : Mers does horror book reviews, unboxings of subscription services and book hauls but she also has some unique features that set her apart, like original short movies and some haunted/abandoned building tours. Mers has a very unique style and personal taste in books. I love that I can watch her videos and never know what to expect. Her content is a reflection of her personality and I love that.

horror book reviews youtube

About: Destiny is passionate about books. She reads from a variety of genres but horror is her favorite. She is a book reviewer on several platforms but just recently started her BookTube account.

What I like: Some BookTubers seem unnatural in front of the camera but Destiny is authentic and carefree, She has the perfect voice for TV/Radio and articulates her thoughts on books so well. Her wrap-up videos are full of recommendations and books to add to your ever-growing TBR. It's Destiny's welcoming and friendly personality that make her videos so engaging. She makes you feel like she's just hanging out with friends talking about books.

horror book reviews youtube

About: Wrap-ups, book hauls, TBR stacks, Marcy makes sure to cover all the classic BookTube content, but viewers will stay for her personality.

What I like:  This channel is for readers who love a good laugh. Marcy is hysterical. The way she talks about books is infectious. She's passionate about the books she loves and the books she didn't enjoy, so either way you'll come away with some strong feelings about what Marcy reads.

horror book reviews youtube

About: Alex loves vintage/retro horror and collecting paperbacks. She has an impressive collection and is super knowledgeable.

What I Like: Alex has a beautiful accent and speaking voice that I find to be comforting and relaxing. My favorite videos are the ones where Alex talks about her favorite horror films. I find that she watches films and reads books that are off the beaten path enough that most people will get book or movie recommendations from her that they haven't heard before.

horror book reviews youtube

About: Jordaline is an avid horror reader/collector. Her videos range from TBR lists, recommendations, wrap-ups to reviews.

What I like: Jordaline knows her shit. She reads a lot of books and she organizes a ton of challenges to get readers to join in on readalongs. She reads mainstream and indie fiction so she gets props from me for introducing her audience to a wide variety of what horror has to offer. I also just love Jordaline's personality. She's confident, authentic and hilarious.

horror book reviews youtube

About: Stephanie is a prolific BookTuber and the host of the podcast, Books in the Freezer . I'm fairly certain that Stephanie has taken a break from BookTube content while she adjusts to mom-life after just having a baby but, I'm confident she will be returning to it and there is plenty of content there to get caught-up on while you wait.

What I love: Stephanie is a joy to watch. She has an expressive face that communicates *exactly* how she is feeling about what she's saying about a book. I love her dry sense of humor and she has great taste in books. Her podcast is current and up-to-date so definitely check that out as well.

It's my encouragement that if you identify as a woman and you love to talk about horror fiction, consider starting up a BookTube! There's a supportive community of readers there who love to welcome new voices. The BookTube sisterhood seems to be a gracious group of women who enjoy collaborating on video content and doing shout-outs of one another. Check out these already established BookTubers and think about how you could lend your own, unique voice to this growing trend in book reviews!

16 BookTubers to Have on Your Radar in the New Year

Everything we know about ‘love in taipei’, the ‘loveboat, taipei’ movie, these 14 books have the most unique magic systems in ya, choose a romance trope, we’ll give you a book rec.

16 BookTubers to Watch and Support

BookTube is one of the best communities for any book lover! With just a simple search, readers can get infinite book recommendations, reviews, and discussions based on their interests both broad (ex. books being published in 2021 ) and narrow (ex. space-themed dystopian romance ).

So what exactly is BookTube?

BookTube is a YouTube-based community of channels dedicated just to reading. This YouTube community was founded on a shared love of all things books—talking about books, reading books, hosting events about books, you name it! Over the past decade, BookTube has grown from a niche online group into a thriving community space connecting readers, authors, and publishers together, not limited to physical locations. The hosts of these channels are called “creators” or “BookTubers,” and on their YouTube channels, they regularly upload videos about their TBRs, reviews of books they’ve read, challenges, tags, and videos documenting their reading journeys. These creators have grown audiences of hundreds of thousands of people around the world and their videos give off the feel of having a conversation with a fellow book nerd.

Just like there’s a book for every person, there’s also a BookTube channel for every reader—it’s just about finding the right fit. Here are a few tips on where to start:

  • Use your own taste to guide you. Search for reviews or recommendation videos that reference your favorite book, series, or genre, so you can find creators making content about your shared interests. If you find yourself wanting to be in a book club with the person on the screen, that’s always a good sign!
  • Who are creators watching? If you already follow a handful of channels, dig into who these creators are following. You can also see who they’ve collaborated with on videos in the past and take a journey through those creators’ channels as well.
  • Ask a friend! Have any YouTube obsessed friends? Ask them about the creators they follow and if they have any recommendations of people they think you’d enjoy. If your friends aren’t huge book nerds though, our Year of Epic Reads book club members are always happy to share their recommendations.

The BookTube world can be intimidating to first dive into. But have no fear, that’s where we and our love of lists come in! Below, we’ve curated 16 standout creators to watch and support, and in the comments below, let us know who your favorite BookTubers are!

1) Bowties & Books

As a queer Black creator, Jesse from Bowties & Books has made it their mission to create videos that blend activism with reading. In the last year, Jesse has shared their experiences as a Black creator on BookTube with their now second most viewed video, “ Being Black on BookTube, Protests, and Fake Allies .” This video encouraged other creators to talk about their experiences with racial inequality and white privilege within the BookTube sphere as well. Jesse covers a diversity of books and genres in their videos, like fiction, LGBTQ+ book recs, YA, fantasy, science fiction, thrillers, and more, and is also the host of the Queer Blackathon reading event.

2) Ariel Bissett

One of the earliest creators in the BookTube community, Ariel Bissett has become known for her thoughtful book recommendations and reviews. Championing everything from fiction to short story collections to graphic novels and poetry, Bissett is also the founder of the now seven-year-old international reading event, The Reading Rush . In the past year, Bissett has not only shared recommendations for combating social media fatigue  and learning more about climate change , but also used her channel to share how the COVID-19 is impacting the publishing industry and ways readers can help.

3) Jesse the Reader

Just like his good friend Ariel Bissett, Jesse George from Jesse the Reader is also an OG BookTuber who started his channel back in 2012. A young adult book lover, Jesse is known for his high energy YA reviews, as well as his fun and original reading challenges and book tag videos. He also hosts a monthly series on our Epic Reads YouTube channel called “ Epic Adaptations ” where he talks about book-to-screen adaptations, including ones for “ Tiny Pretty Things ,” Shadow & Bone ” and more.

4) The Artisan Geek

Based in the Netherlands, Seji, the creator behind The Artisan Geek , is a fresh, creative, and unique voice within the BookTube space. Her book tastes are diverse, ranging from classics to poetry, fiction to the occasional YA, but what links all of her reads is her investment in the narratives of unrepresented communities—specifically authors of color, authors with disabilities, and queer authors. She’s previously hosted the Black Lit Challenge , a readathon with challenges specifically highlighting Black authors, and this year, the Fortnight Frights Readathon , which challenged readers to pick up gothic and horror books from authors of color. Outside of her thoughtful YouTube videos, Seji also maintains the Black Literature Compendium , a 100+ page document sharing books written by Black authors across all genres.

5) NayaReadsAndSmiles

A pioneer within the BookTube space, Nai’a Kamehanaokala Perkins  is a young adult—specifically, young adult fantasy—book lover who uses her channel to share everything about her current reads, most anticipated books, and reading habits. While Nai’a has always used her channel to champion authors and creators of color, this past year amidst the George Floyd protests, she shared her own personal experiences with colorism online and her personal decision to stop working with a brand after learning about their history of discrimination against BookTubers of color.

6) Leena Norms

A BookTuber since 2007, Leena Norms brings a unique perspective to the community, combining both her love for books and her years spent working within the publishing industry. While her reading interests range from a variety of topics, from fiction to short stories to poetry, Norms makes a point of using her recommendations to point readers towards overlooked, less mainstream, or older books. She also uses her channel to talk about climate change, fast fashion, and life advice videos.

7) myonna reads

An avid reader, Myonna is a 22-year-old BookTuber based in Michigan and a lover of all things horror, fantasy, and young adult. Amongst her monthly book reviews, hauls, and wrap ups, Myonna also uploads reading vlogs, reading challenges (including reading 30 books in 30 days!), and livestreams chatting with her audience.

8) fictionalfates

Long-time Bookstagrammer but relatively new BookTuber, Joel Rochester has gained over 45,000 subscribers to his channel Fictional Fates in just six months of joining YouTube. An aspiring author himself and passionate about changing the publishing industry from the inside out, Joel uploads videos about fantasy and horror books, as well as creating specific videos highlighting books by authors of color and queer writers.

9) paperbackdreams

A prolific fiction, horror, thriller, and YA reader, Kat from the channel paperbackdreams is known for her very honest and hilarious book vlogs that make you want to join her book club immediately. She is also known for her rant review series, where she reads poorly rated, yet popular, books and uploads serious reviews about them—such as her past video on the book “ After .”

10) withcindy

Cindy is one of the most hilarious, innovative, and brutally honest BookTubers within the community, and is known for her unique twists on popular BookTube trends. Cindy reads just about everything from award-winning adult fiction to YA to fantasy and steamy romance novels. Amongst her reviews, including one of her most popular videos “ i read my airplane seatmate’s trash romance book and it was a mistake ,” Cindy digs into books outside of the mainstream or riffs on typical book reviews by combining them with obscure, random activities or angles. A big supporter of new BookTubers starting off in the community, Cindy also uses her channel to highlight books by authors of color and hold discussions around diversity and representation.

11) PeruseProject

Looking for fantasy book recommendations? Regan from Peruse Project is your girl. While Regan has since expanded her bookshelves to include thrillers, fiction, and romance, she has a deep knowledge of the fantasy book world, both young adult and adult. On a monthly basis, she produces not only the classics, such as monthly wrap ups and book recommendation videos, but also releases near weekly reading vlogs which take her audience through her reading habits each week.

12) Jen Campbell

U.K-based author, poet, literary judge, and BookTuber Jen Campbell is a treasure trove of literary knowledge. Her interests are broad as she reviews works of poetry, adult fiction, fairy tales, children’s literature, short story collections, and the classics. Jen also uploads videos discussing fairy tale adaptations, literary tropes and the misrepresentations of disabilities and disfigurements in media—most recently in her review of “The Witches .”

Over the past five years, readers have watched Ellias come into his own through his evolution as a reader and BookTuber. His reading tastes include just about everything (thrillers, sci-fi, graphic novels, manga, adult fiction, young adult), and his self-deprecating nature and thoughtful reviews makes his channel a pleasure to watch.

14) thisstoryaintover

With a passion for young adult and fantasy books, Jananie uploads book reviews, challenges, and recommendations to her own channel while also balancing a full-time career in publishing! And on top of staying connected to her audience, Jananie also has a series with Epic Reads called Epic Book Recs , where she shares YA book recommendations by topic or genre, such as mental health books, fantasy stories, or books with LGBTQ+ representation.

15) Tiana Tea

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mig58883wNc

Originally starting her channel because she didn’t have many bookish friends IRL, Tiana returned to BookTube this past year and has since been uploading hilarious and relatable reviews of sci-fi, historical fiction, contemporary romance, and adult and young adult fantasy books. Her recent storytime about meeting one of her favorite authors, Emily St. John Mandel , feels especially relatable for all us awkward book nerds out there.

16) Booked With Jameelah

In 2020, Jameelah celebrated her first full year of being a BookTuber, which she started in the hopes of sharing her thoughts as a book-loving Muslim hijabi woman. An aspiring author herself, Jameelah is obsessed with fantasy and keeps her audience up to date on new releases through her popular book haul series.

15 Fantastic YouTube Book Reviewers For Your Viewing Pleasure

For more in-depth reviews or some laughs, these are some of the best channels for YouTube book reviews and related bookish content.

Giovanna Centeno

A polyglot reader, Giovanna Centeno is best described as a traveling book hoarder. Born and raised in the Amazonian region of Brazil, she studied Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies in Switzerland, before moving to her current home in Lisbon, Portugal. Gi is always traveling and reading, and you can tag along on her next bookish adventure by following @gcreads on Instagram.

Lately I have found myself craving very chill book related content, as I have been stuck in a very long reading slump but I also want to keep up with the latest releases. So I tend to turn to YouTube book reviews.

If you are a part of the book community online, you probably have fallen down the rabbit hole that is BookTube. From cozy reading vlogs to book hauls and wrap-ups, there is something for everyone, even if, like me, you were a bit scared for the sheer amount of City of Bones or Sarah J. Mass there when you first discovered BookTube, don’t worry. The community has grown and diversified, with genres and topics for any taste. In this post, I wanted to highlight some review BookTubers, so that if you are looking to explore more in-depth reviews, want some book recommendations, or just a good laugh, you have some excellent places to start.

These are my favorite channels for YouTube book reviews and related bookish content. And, if you’re not already, check out Book Riot’s YouTube channel , too!

BookTube Channels for YouTube Book Reviews

The poptimist.

By far, one of my favorite reviewers on the platform, The Poptimist is almost exclusively a review channel. By all metrics, he is an unconventional BookTuber in that regard, but his super in-depth and top-notch GIF game reviews make every book he talks about super interesting. Whenever he uploads, I know that my TBR is about to grow.

Reading With Cindy

Do you want to laugh your socks off? Look no further than Reading With Cindy. I can safely say one of the funniest people on YouTube. With self-aware and critical humor, her channel is refreshing, with its hyper-analytical rant reviews.

Jean Bookish Thoughts

Jean was one of the first creators I started following when I joined BookTube, and I am still in awe whenever she posts. I would define her content as a mix of fantasy and intellectual; she is getting her PhD in ancient history, and always has excellent recommendations for most genres. Still, I would say her specialty is fantasy and political books. She has also started doing videos that are several short reviews in one go, which are nice if you just want a quick opinion.

Bowties & Books

With lots of energy and a super cool TBR card game, Bowties and Books is the perfect channel if you are looking for mini-reviews/recommendations, to expand your TBR with lots of great LGBTQ and diverse books.

Chanelle Time

Another very funny creator, Chanelle is awesome. Her book reviews combined with makeup tutorials make you feel like you are just having out with one of your funniest friends and talking about books, what more could you ask for?

Ariel Bissett

Ariel Bissett is one of the most expansive creators on BookTube, with a channel that has evolved from your traditional YouTube book reviews and hauls to a documentary miniseries on bookstores and music and book combo reviews. Her videos are well thought out and researched and it definitely shows her range and creativity.

Savidge Reads

Simon’s videos always feel very cozy to me, his wrap up reviews are very interesting, and I feel like he truly thinks about his reading in a more analytical way. So, if you just want to learn about some more books and watch a soothing video, check out his channel.

Paperback Dreams

You want to have ups and downs, honest and funny commentary? Look no further. Paperback Dreams is a great channel if you want your reviews to go through the motions; many times she even vlogs her reading process together with the reviews, so you can see her opinions throughout the entire books as she goes.

Starlah Reads

Starlah Reads does the more traditional formate of reviews, generally in her Best/Worst books of the year videos. But what I like the most is her series “Author Anew” in which she reads a new book from an author she has not liked in the past. These are part vlog, part review.

Jessica Nicole Dickerson

Jessica has a super fun and light energy channel and her reviews combined with wrap-ups always put me in a chill mood. She definitely spends a good amount of time and detail in each book, without spoiling or overlooking content.

Jurassic Reads

With a wide range of genres, Angel does great reviews about both new releases and backlist titles. So if you want to explore anything from romance to sci-fi and horror, she is always a good and reliable source for YouTube book reviews.

Perpetual Pages

One of the most dynamic reviewers on BookTube, Adri has something for everyone. However, I particularly appreciate their reviews, as I feel they are super in-depth without being too long, and the topics they choose to approach when analyzing their reading really resonate with me.

Brown Girl Reading

A more straightforward reviewer, I love turning to her channel whenever I am unsure about a book. Her reviews are deeply honest and very interesting; she is not afraid to speak her mind even on super hyped books.

A Book Olive

Olive reads and reviews almost exclusively adult fiction and nonfiction, which makes her a rare reviewer on BookTube. She does dedicated reviews as also the more traditional wrap-up reviews. If you are looking for a pandemic-related book, she has recently uploaded a very good summary of Spillover by David Quammen.

What Kamil Reads

Kamil’s channel is almost exclusively review based, and with reason. His reviews have historical backgrounds, language analysis, and a very in-depth explanation of why he did or did not like a book.

This is a place to discuss horror literature. Any book is up for discussion as long as that discussion is respectful. It doesn't matter if you're into Stephen King, Octavia Butler, Jack Ketchum or Shirley Jackson, this is the place to share that love and discuss to your heart's content.

Any good youtube book channels?

I have found a few books thanks to Booktubers recommendations but also been sold a few duds. What surprises me though is how many youtubers are incredibly well read with endless shelves behind them but utterly inarticulate when it comes to summarising or discussing the book.

“So err yeah, like, its really good, because, i dont know like, i just liked it, ya know, because its kind of like …good”

12 Classic Horror Audiobooks You Can Listen for Free on Youtube

Fearsome frights, free of charge.

free horror audiobooks

For many, like myself, the shelter-in-place continues and may persist well into the summer. Life remains in flux, constantly changing and constricting, and if you’re like me, you’re also having trouble reading. Staring at screens constantly has taken its toll. Every social interaction with others outside of one’s quarantine place is a Zoom meeting or something similar. My eyes and my mind are tired.

But one thing that’s really called to me are audiobooks. And not just any sort of audiobook—classic horror audiobooks! We’re talking the classic horror that has now become part of the literary canon, so integrated into our tropes, they have become identifiable origin points for our favorite horror concoctions. The following list are audiobooks you can tune into on Youtube for free.

Many are tales you’ve read and loved, but during this particular point in time, they just might do what they’ve done for me: become a sort of audio sanctuary, a lulling horror that is far more nostalgic and enjoyable than what’s happening all around us.

At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft

What classic horror list would be complete without H.P. Lovecraft? This 1931 novella is a Lovecraftian classic exploring the events of a doomed expedition through the Antarctic continent led by the story’s narrator, Dr. William Dyer of Miskatonic University. The whole unreliable narrator device is utilized in the way of Dyer telling stories to other explorers, evidentially outrageous and unsightly, in hopes of keeping others from also exploring the territory. There was a Guillermo del Toro adaptation in the works, but it was eventually shelved due to funding reasons.

At the Mountains of Madness

The Willows by Algernon Blackwood

Lovecraft deemed Blackwood an inspiration and went so far as to say this novella, the 1907 classic, The Willows , to be among the best supernatural stories in literature at the time. The gist of it involves two friends on a canoe trip down the River Danube. Listening to the audiobook and all of this devilish descriptions of nature makes a person ache for walking and hiking in the woods… that is, until the story takes a horrific turn

The Willows

The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley

Give me any story about mysteries about books and naturally Christopher Morley’s 1919 classic, among the first to explore the “bibliomystery,” is one of those audiobooks that ended up lulling me away from anxiety. Less outright horror, the mystery that often comes with classic horror tales is still present and what’s more, Roger Mifflin, the bookshop’s owner, gives readers countless stories about the ghosts of literature. If you want to wax nostalgic about adoration of books while enjoying a mystery, check it out.

The Haunted Bookshop

Hop Frog by Edgar Allan Poe

Pretty much any story by Poe could fit nicely in this list, but it’s the spot-on reading by Barry Bowman for the Chilling Tales for Dark Nights Youtube channel that gets the win. The eponymously named Hop Frog is a man suffering from dwarfism who becomes the jester of a cruel king that enacts many practical jokes upon him. The story is reportedly semi-autobiographical, with Poe writing the story as a means of “literary revenge.”

The Body Snatcher by Robert Louis Stevenson

A bonafide tale of classic horror, Stevenson’s The Body Snatcher involves two young medical students, Fettes and Macfarlane, as they become inspired by their professor to become grave robbers in the name of science. It’s reportedly based on the surgeon, Robert Knox and the Burke and Hare Murders. I can’t help but think about the cult classic film, Flatliners , and how it might have been inadvertently influenced by Stevenson’s story, if only because the film likely could not have existed without the story.

The Body Snatcher

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving

A true Halloween mainstay, Washington Irving’s legend has endured the eras and has become one of those tales so deeply entwined with our celebration of a holiday. Though there’s no point in explaining the plot, it’s worth mentioning that Sleepy Hollow is a real place, up in New York state in a town called Tarrytown. Likewise, though there are countless adaptations of the story, it’s worth living through the original tale, as it was initially told.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The Vampyre by John William Polidori

You’ve probably heard all about the backstory of this one but here goes: Polidori was Lord Byron’s personal physician and he, along with Mary Godwin (aka Mary Shelley) challenged each other to see who could write the best Gothic story. Shelley’s answer was Frankenstein . Polidori’s was The Vampyre . The tale itself was among the first to explore vampirism in a literary sense. Now it’s as overused as zombies.

The Vampyre

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

As mentioned above, Mary Shelley was dared into writing the best Gothic story she could write and in doing so concocted a true classic of horror. Victor Frankenstein, the obsessed mad scientist obsessed with how a being comes to life, concocts his own via a random assortment of body parts. The creature is so hideous the scientist locks him away. The poor creature just wants to understand but after a long enough period of loneliness and isolation, anger and vengeance replaces all emotion. It’s the quintessential tale of innocence and being misunderstood.

The Book of the Damned by Charles Fort

Charles Fort’s memorably titled The Book of the Damned is, in fact, a collection of nonfiction phenomena about everything from conspiracies to UFOs, missing persons and essentially the world of the strange that we now love dearly and often use as fodder to scare each other in the latest creepypasta. The audiobook version is a great rendition and works well in creating an ongoing flow of paranormal history.

The Book of the Damned

The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft

The very essence of cosmic horror and the Lovecraftian tale, this story is perhaps the one most remembered and revered from the author. Written in multiple narratives and involving the diary of a deceased man, the story goes into great lengths to tackle the very essence of madness. The essence fuels nearly every work of horror—what of the unknown can push back, exceeding our ability to know it?

the call of cthulhu hp lovecraft free horror audiobooks on youtube

The Red Room by H.G. Wells

Long before Twin Peaks , H.G. Wells wrote a story about an ominous red room, a true place of terror. The setup is decidedly simple—the protagonist spends a night in a room said to be haunted. And yeah, it’s painted red. Oh and you bet, the protagonist is hoping to disprove the stories. It might be a derivative setup if this wasn’t, you know, from 1894. One of the first of its kind, it’s now the groundwork of pretty much any paranormal investigative narrative.

the red room hg wells free horror audiobooks on youtube

Dracula's Guest by Bram Stoker

Another classic of horror, Dracula is timeless. But did you know there was a deleted first chapter from the book? It’s true. Dracula’s Guest is a deleted chapter turned short story, about the protagonist venturing to Transylvania, with the same haunting imagery and travelers’ warnings.

So you want to find a book blog?

If you’re a voracious reader, you might think of a book blog as an oasis in the middle of the desert: a place on the Internet that brims with talk about books, books, and more books.

Well, good news — we built this directory of the 200 of the best book blogs  to satiate your thirst. Take a walk around, use the filters to narrow down your search to blogs in your preferred genre, and feel free to bookmark this page and come back, as we do update it regularly with more of the best book blogs out there.

If you’re an aspiring author, you might see a book blog more as a book review blog: a place where you can get your yet-to-be published book reviewed. In that case, you’ll be glad to know that most of the book blogs in our directory are open to review requests and accept indie books! We expressly designed this page (and our book marketing platform, Reedsy Discovery ) to be useful to indie book authors who need book reviews. If you’re wondering how to approach a book blog for a review request, please read on.

You’ve found a book blog. Now what?

Let’s say that you’re an author, and you’ve found a couple of book blogs that would be perfect fits to review your book. What now? Here are some tips as you go about getting your book reviews:

  • Be sure to read the review policy. First, check that the book blog you’re querying is open to review requests. If that’s the fortunate case, carefully read the blog’s review policy and make sure that you follow the directions to a T.
  • Individualize your pitches. Book bloggers will be able to immediately tell apart the bulk pitches, which simply come across as thoughtless and indifferent. If you didn’t take the time to craft a good pitch, why should the blogger take the time to read your book? Personalize each pitch to up your chances of getting a response.
  • Format your book in a professional manner before sending it out. Ensure that your manuscript isn’t presented sloppily. If the book blogger asks for a digital ARC, you might want to check out apps such as Instafreebie or Bookfunnel.
  • Create a spreadsheet to track your progress. Wading through so many book blogs can be troublesome — not to mention trying to remember which ones you’ve already contacted. To save yourself the time and trouble, use a simple Excel spreadsheet to keep track of your progress (and results).

Looking to learn even more about the process? Awesome 👍 For a detailed guide, check out this post that’s all about getting book reviews.
